Mercer BEARS vs. VMI KEYDETS

October 25, 2025 l Five Star Stadium l Macon, Ga.

u The 14th-ranked Mercer Bears resume the home portion of their regular season schedule today when they take on league nemesis VMI at 3 p.m. inside Five Star Stadium in Macon. The game will be broadcasted live by ESPN+ with Frank Malloy and Phil Cox handling the duties in the booth.

u VMI returned a dozen starters (5 offense, 7 defense) off of last year’s team that finished with a 1-11 mark (1-7 SoCon) … The Keydets will ride a five-game losing streak into Saturday’s game with the Bears, and registered their lone win of the season in Week 2 against Ferrum (NCAA Division II) … Defensive back Kouri Crump was the lone Keydet named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference squad as a member of the first team … VMI has already registered a conference-best (3rd NCAA) three defensive touchdowns this season, including a 10-yard pick 6 in the Week 7 loss at East Tennessee State … The Keydets have also lost just one fumble this season as well.

u Mercer has captured eight of the previous 11 series matchups with VMI dating back to the 2014 season –the first campaign for the Bears as a member of the Southern Conference … The Orange & Black has won the last three meetings by 34 or more points after dropping consecutive contests with the Keydets in 2020-21 and 2021 … The Bears are averaging 32.7 points per game across the 11-game-old series with VMI and have scored 32 or more points seven times across that span … The series does show one overtime contest - a 33-30 triumph for Mercer in Lexington, Va., midway through the 2016 season.

u Visiting and 10th-ranked Mercer racked up more than 500 yards of total offense and pitched its first road shutout in more than a decade as the Bears clinched at least a share of their first conference title in 92 years with a 34-0 shutout of VMI last season at Foster Stadium … The Bears picked off a pair of passes in that outing … MU racked up 221 yards in the opening half and took a 17-0 lead into the halftime break … Parker Wroble caught three passes for 102 yards and two scores to pace the MU offense.

u Mercer will seek its school record-tying sixth-straight victory when it battles VMI today in Five Star Stadium … Last year’s version of the Bears captured its first six contests of the season to shatter the previous record (5 games) that was jointly held by the 2013, 2022 and 2023 squads … A win on Saturday against the Keydets would move the Bears to 5-0 in Southern Conference play for the first time in program history as well … The 2022 club was the only Mercer team to capture its first four conference matchups of the season until this year’s squad equaled that mark with the victory over Samford in Week 6.

u Mercer will ride an eight-game win streak against Southern Conference teams into its Week 9 home game against VMI ... The last league loss for the Bears came in the form of a 55-35 loss at Samford that marked the first loss of the season for MU in 2024 ... MU has now captured 17 of its last 19 games against SoCon opponents dating back to a 38-3 win over VMI on Sept. 30, 2023 ... The Bears are 9-1 at home across that stretch and 8-1 away from Macon.

u Mercer has held four of its last five opponents under 100 rushing yards, and currently ranks fourth among the

Freshman Braden Atkinson broke a school record with his fourth 300+-yard passing game of the season in Mercer’s 38-14 victory at Princeton. He ranks second in NCAA FCS with 303.0 passing yards per game.

126 FCS schools with 84.5 rushing yards per game allowed … It’s no rarity, however, as the Orange & Black has limited opponents to 100 yards or less in 15 of its 20 outings (75%) under head coach Mike Jacobs and defensive coordinator Jahmal Brown … Mercer has also averaged 8.2 tackles for loss per game (3.5 sacks/game) across that stretch as well ... The Bears boasted the nation’s best rushing defense (70.8) last season.

u Mercer will carry the nation’s 16th-ranked total offense (440.3 yards/game) into Saturday’s matchup at Five Star Stadium and ranks among the nation’s top 20 teams in six other offensive statistical categories as well

... The Bears possess the nation’s 8th-best passing attack (278.2), and have yielded just 0.33 sacks (4th NCAA) and 3.83 tackles for loss (10th) through six games ... Mercer also ranks 18th among 126 FCS squads with a 154.86 passing efficiency rating.

u Mercer has racked up more than 400 yards of total offense on each leg of its current 5-game win skein ... It is the first time in the modern era of the program (2013-present) that MU has logged 400 or more yards of total offense in five consecutive games ... Mercer has registered at least 500 yards of total offense in each of its last two outings, marking just the third time in program history that the squad has reached that impressive plateau in back-to-back games.

u Quarterback Braden Atkinson was one of 22 players named to Wednesday’s (10/22) watch list for the Jerry Rice Award which honors the FCS freshman player of the year ... Six current or former Mercer players have finished among the top 17 in the final vote tally for the honor, including Andrew Zock who logged a fourth-place finish in the voting for the 2024 award ... That matched the highest finish by an MU player in the 14-year history of the honor ... Isaac Dowling finished fourth in the final vote tally for the 2020-21 award.

u Reice Griffith’s successful PAT kick late in the third quarter of Mercer’s 38-14 win at Princeton moved the junior kicked atop the program’s all-time scoring list ... He has now logged 216 career points on 123 PATs and 31 field goals ... The scoring record was formerly held by Cole Fisher (212 points) who logged 107 PATs and 35 field goals from 2015-18.

u Mercer is now 52-21 (.712) all-time in Five Star Stadium following its Week 6 win over Samford, including a 25-5 (.833) clip since the 2019 campaign ... The Bears have won nine-straight games against SoCon foes in Five Star Stadium, and boasts a 20-3 clip against league foes since the end of the 2019 campaign ... The Bears are 30-17 all-time against SoCon opponents in Macon.

Mercer’s defense has limited four of its last five opponents under the 100-yard rushing mark, and heads into today’s game sporting the nation’s fourth-ranked rushing defense. The Bears also lead FCS with 4.00 sacks per game as well.
