MENDELU charity activities in 2024

In 2024 Mendel University actively participated in various charity projects that provided concrete help to people who need it most. On 4 December 2024, the traditional MENDELU Charity Market was held, this time in several different formats. A physical market held at MENDELU made 85,582 Kč, an online auction on the Dobrobot website brought in 51,641 Kč, and the Donio crowdfunding site collected an amazing 517,101 Kč. The total proceeds amounted to 654,324 Kč, which was donated to help two young girls, Meliska and Arianka, and to the Čtyřlístek pro hafany dog shelter. On top of that, the 103 Cups of Punch for Emil event was held during Advent. It not only brought seasonal cheer but also contributed to supporting a good cause. MENDELU donated 25,000 Kč to the para swimming club SK Kontakt Brno, and proceeds from the 805 drinks sold went to the World Deaf Beach Volleyball Championships.

Major activities in 2024

Department of Quality and Risk Management

Last year, a new internal quality evaluation system was introduced, focusing on evaluating quality through study programmes and thematic evaluations based on the Internal Evaluation Board’s requirements. As part of the change, a new accreditation information system (ISAK) was launched. A professional community of quality specialists was also established. Its members consist of the employees of universities responsible for quality assurance and evaluation. In November 2024, it met for the first time at the Křtiny Chateau. After the event, an MS Teams group was set up, and the KvalitaNaVŠ.cz website was launched.

Digitalization and Electronization

In accordance with legislation, we use an electronic document management system. For the year 2024, we have recorded 36,032 documents and 2,047 approval processes. At the registry office, we now perform authorized data conversion upon receipt of analog documents. For pilot implementation, applications such as the electronic file for creating new employment contracts, project reporting, and an application for entering rewards are ready. All of these processes are fully electronic. Currently, over 6,000 users are registered on Moje MENDELU. At the beginning of 2024, an SOS module was created to report emergency situations, and the Alumni module was expanded. As part of the Night of Scientists program, the Onboarding module was used, allowing high school visitors to launch a specially created tour for this occasion.

Communications and Marketing Office

Celebrations of Mendel University’s 105th anniversary culminated on 21 September with an alumni reunion attended by more than 2,500 guests. A university-wide alumni club was founded, offering the opportunity to sign up and work with alumni on a long-term basis. A graphic style guide for social media was also created to ensure that the university is being presented in a consistent, professional manner.

Library

In 2024, we contributed to the alumni reunion and Researchers Night. In June, the MENDELU Library gave a presentation at Brno Library Days. We held approximately 100 educational events for students and academics, and we organized other seminars led by invited experts. The number of institutes with which we actively work and participate in teaching is growing. We appreciate this cooperation immensely. Work on consolidating the Library’s collection is continuing. Last year, we processed more than 11,000 publications that came from the collections of 16 smaller libraries. On Wednesday, 5 February 2025, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., the Breakfast with the Library event will be held. There, you will be able to look through the most interesting books that were left forgotten on shelves in the dusty cabinets, cellars, and attics of the university’s institutes and departments and are now available to all users.

Department of Science and Research

In 2024, the Department of Science and Research awarded doctoral degrees and appointed new associate professors. It recognized patent inventors, initiated over 10 rehabilitation and professorial appointment procedures, and contributed to evaluating tertiary education institutions. Through the MENDELU PhD School, it supported young researchers with seminars. In 2025, these efforts will continue, with a focus on developing the PhD School and completing university evaluation materials.

Open Science Centre

The Open Science Centre developed new training sessions related to open science issues, such as data management plans, open data, and predatory journals. In total, 330 people received training. Materials were created in response to the Czech Science Foundation’s and the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic’s open science conditions. The webpage about research data management was expanded. There you can learn how to document data, search data repositories, or back up files. In collaboration with the Department of Information Technology, we implemented an online tool, the Data Stewardship Wizard, which makes creating data management plans easier by asking questions and sharing links that guide users through the process. Watch instructional videos and try out the wizard. This year we are continuing to offer consultation about open science. Get in touch with us.

Legal Department

The Legal Department is now responsible for managing university regulations and has prepared a new related regulation. University regulations are gradually taking on a new format, and when they are drafted, there is now greater emphasis on terminology and content. On the website pravni.mendelu.cz those responsible for drafting regulations will find instructions, templates, and guidelines for creating university regulations.

Major activities in 2024

Operations Department

In 2024, the Construction Department completed several major projects. The first phase of renovating the hallways of Building A was completed, including the installation of modern AV technology, and the second phase is currently ongoing. Work on renovating the sanitary facilities in Building B continues. The first two phases have been completed, and the third phase is currently ongoing. We also built a fibre-optic connection between the botanical garden and Building K, and we installed a green roof on Building C, co-funded by the EU. Completing work on renovating a transfer station allowed us to connect Building D and open new laboratories. In Lednice, the roof of Building LB 09 was repaired. The Occupational Safety and Health and Fire Protection Office held fire drills in Buildings Z and Q, which took place without incident. To improve services, the department began collaborating with Best Barista Brno and GET24, and now there are new coffee machines and snack bars in several campus buildings.

Department of Human Resources Management

In 2024 we managed to stabilize the HR team and key processes, including addressing wage disparities in academic salary scales. The department also began addressing new topics, such as social security, work flexibility, and balancing work and family life. At the same time, the department maintained the continuity of the HR Award strategy and gender equality efforts, to which the Gender Stereotypes exhibition contributed.

International Relations Office

The International Relations Office is successfully developing internationalization thanks to its partnerships in the HEROES and BUP alliances. Last year, four trips abroad with an academic were organized – to Nicaragua/Costa Rica, Tanzania, Mongolia, and Zambia. The goal was to deepen international cooperation, establish new contacts, and strengthen MENDELU’s global position.

Procurement and Purchasing Office

MARQUET: The tool has been in operation for nearly a year, and the transition of employees to the new automated process for ordering commodities from centrally negotiated contracts has been successful, with no major issues. Additionally, the user interface in MARQUET has been improved (e.g., better selection of financial resource combinations).

OVZN, in collaboration with PO REK and other departments, has successfully implemented many procurement and tender procedures funded by NPO and OP JAK programs.

Strategy and Analysis Department

The year 2024 was marked by the preparation of two new strategic documents for the upcoming six-year period. The Strategic Intent for MENDELU for 2025–2030 was prepared, discussed, and approved, as well as the MENDELU Sustainability Strategy for the same period, which is the first document of its kind at our university. Through this strategy, the university aims to integrate sustainability principles into all its activities. Over the past year, we also joined additional sustainability rankings for universities – THE Impact Rankings and QS Sustainability Rankings. The results of these rankings, along with the traditionally reported UI GreenMetric ranking, provide significant feedback and valuable information for further development and direction. We have continued to expand collaboration with external partners. In April, together with the South Moravian Innovation Centre, we organized the Velvet Innovation Meetup, and in October, we held, in collaboration with the National Cluster Association, the Cluster Day Conference in the South Moravian Region. Both events took place at our university.

SUSTAINABLE MENDELU

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

The sustainability strategy is based on five critical pillars: strategic management, educational activity, creative activity, operations and facility management, and social responsibility. Important objectives include improving energy efficiency, responsible procurement, and supporting biodiversity. The university is moving towards implementing measures reducing its carbon footprint, supporting sustainable management, and supporting sustainable mobility and green construction.

An addition to the University Archive

Shortly before Christmas, the University Archive acquired a precious new addition to its fonds: the chronicle of Forestry Engineering programme graduates from the class of 1955. The chronicle was donated by Professor Vladimír Tesař and Professor Alois Prax, members of that class and esteemed members of our academic community. This group of alumni has regularly met up since 1960. The most recent reunion was held last year during the celebrations of MENDELU’s 105th anniversary. The University Archive is grateful for this one-of-a-kind donation and welcomes others to donate similar materials, which will be permanently stored in the archival repository to be preserved for future generations.

Legislative changes to labour law from 1 January 2025

Changes have been made to the Labour Code, pension and sickness insurance, e-benefits (e-dávky), and the minimum wage! You can find more information on the Department of HR Management website.

Occupational safety, fire protection, and emergency situations training

In 2025, in-person training sessions focused on occupational safety and fire protection will be held periodically from January to June. The training will also cover current measures and procedures related to emergency situations. It will also include driver safety training. The university’s security supervisor will forward the training dates to secretaries and department heads following the schedule established in the Bursar’s Methodological Directive 2/2021. The training is mandated by current legislation and is mandatory for all employees. Training for senior staff will be held separately, on 3 March 2025, by an external trainer, Robert Křepinský, the chairman of the Standing Committee for Legislation of the Government Council for Occupational Safety and Health.

Whistleblowing at MENDELU: Do you know where to turn?

MENDELU has in place an internal system for submitting reports based on the Whistleblower Protection Act. This system allows users to report suspected illegal activities, for example, related to cybersecurity, environmental protection, or public contracts. If you do not know how to submit a report or want to get more information about the system, click here to download a document containing detailed instructions and contact information.

Tax reconciliation

In January a new application titled Request for Clearing was added to the Employee Portal of IUS. It was created by the development teams for our SAP and UIS information systems. Using this application, employees who do not file tax returns by themselves can request that their employer process their annual tax reconciliation, which is carried during payroll processing for the month of March. In the past, such a request had to be submitted on paper and in person at the Payroll Department. With this step, the university continues its established trend of reducing paperwork and digitizing both internal and external processes. In addition to this application for employees, Payroll Department staff have also received a UIS application for management, returns, and communication with employees, including email notifications. This application enables sorting, searching, filtering, and log exporting.

The Gender Equality Plan

The Gender Equality Plan (GEP) is a key tool for ensuring equal opportunities and support for a culture of inclusivity at the university. The university needs a GEP not only to achieve a fair working environment but also to meet the requirements of grant programmes, such as Horizon Europe and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. The introduction of this plan is helping minimize the loss of talent, supporting career growth regardless of gender, and improving the university’s attractiveness as an employer, and will lead to meeting European standards. This will contribute to the university’s long-term growth and sustainability as a modern, responsible institute. The new plan was issued for the 2025–2028 period.

MultiSport card price set to change in April

On 1 April 2025 the price of the employee MultiSport card will go up slightly. The new price will be 1,034 Kč per month. The good news is that the price of companion cards and children’s cards is staying the same: 1,600 Kč and 500 Kč per month, respectively. The card will still offer the same broad portfolio of MultiSport services and benefits: you can use the MultiSport card at more than 2,700 exercise and relaxation facilities in more than 500 cities and towns in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. You can use the card every day for one free entry and choose the activity you feel like doing. On top of all that, with the MyMultiSport programme you get access to all the latest discount offers, events, interesting tips, and useful videos. All users will be asked to update their payroll deduction form by the end of March. For more info on the MultiSport programme, see here.

Safe MENDELU:

A series about safety

In January, the Safe MENDELU campaign took place and revolved around a four-episode series covering important topics such as cybersecurity, sexual harassment, fire protection, and occupational safety. Now that the campaign has ended, you can still find current information and useful advice on the bezpecnost.mendelu.cz website.

Developing strategic partnerships at MENDELU

Our university is developing strategic partnerships with science and research institutions, public administration, and industry as a part of the National Recovery Plan project “Support for green skills and sustainability at MENDELU.” One key activity is focused on cooperation at the national and international levels, with an emphasis on the green transformation. In Autumn 2024, MENDELU representatives visited HAMK (Finland) and UNINA (Italy), where they focused on new technologies, sustainability, and energy. As a result of these meetings, memoranda of cooperation were signed. In spring 2025, representatives from both institutions plan to visit MENDELU, and online workshops will be held to share experience. This project will enhance sustainable development and international cooperation at MENDELU.

Opportunity to offer research topics to secondary school students

Until 15 March 2025, MENDELU academic staff can get involved in the JCMM’s current call by submitting topics about which they can advise secondary school students writing papers for the Students’ Professional Activities (SOČ) competition. You can find the details here: For advisers | SOČ in South Moravia – A website for secondary school students who are writing or will write a SOČ paper. SOČ is a prestigious competition for secondary school students conducting research in various fields. Besides working on their own research projects, competitors also participate in the work of research organizations. JCMM, the SOČ coordinator in the South Moravia Region, keeps a list of research topics from which students can choose. JCMM will select several dozen topics to support with up to 20,000 Kč to purchase materials. Advisers will receive a reward of 10,000 Kč. For more information about SOČ, see here

Changes and trends at Canteen X: Improving meal choices and reducing waste

At Canteen X, the period stretching from September to December 2024 witnessed several changes and interesting trends. Diners more frequently combined vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, with vegetarian options often serving as a side dish. Classic ready-made dishes, such as goulash and risotto, remained less popular, whereas lasagne and sweet foods started to regain popularity. The sweet bar, especially fruit and yogurt cups, received very positive feedback. The amount of waste produced has significantly dropped, from 60 to 70 litres per day to 17 litres. This reduction is largely a result of diners leaving fewer leftovers on their plates. Surprisingly, there was lesser interest in otherwise-popular burgers and tortillas. Overall, diners rated the canteen positively, mainly because they can choose the composition of their meals. Lines are still a problem. They form because most diners want to look at everything offered at the serving counters. There are plans to introduce QR code menus and other changes that could speed up service time. Overall, though, customers are highly satisfied with the service.

MENDELU in QS Sustainability Rankings for first time

Higher education analysis firm QS added the QS Sustainability Rankings to its portfolio of university rankings in 2022. The rank of each university is determined by assessing the measures it is taking to address global challenges in the categories of Environmental Impact, Social Impact, and Governance. Last year, our university was included in this ranking for the first time,

ranking 749th out of 1,751 schools. MENDELU scored the highest in the Governance category, placing 263rd. The materials for evaluating our university and the ranking results were a valuable source of information for drafting our 2025–2030 Sustainability Strategy. They helped us identify areas in which MENDELU has certain gaps and which we will further develop in the upcoming period. An overview of how MENDELU fared in different rankings and international comparisons is available on the website of the Department of Strategy and Analysis.

MENDELU ranks among global “green” universities

In 2024 our university was included in the UI GreenMetric rankings for the fourth time. This ranking has been published annually since 2010 by the University of Indonesia and focuses on the sustainability performance of universities.

Important factors include the university’s carbon footprint and efforts to fight climate change. The goal is to gain an overview of universities that are moving towards becoming a “green campus.” The latest edition of the rankings was published in December 2024. A total of 1,477 schools were evaluated, including seven in the Czech Republic. Mendel University in Brno ranked 345th globally (moving up 16 spots since last year) and 3rd among Czech universities (1st was Czech University of Life Sciences and 2nd, Masaryk University).

MENDELU makes debut on THE Impact Rankings

Since 2019 Times Higher Education has published THE Impact Rankings (THE IR), which identify and celebrate universities that excel across multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). MENDELU was ranked for the first time in 2024, in seven rankings out of 17 for individual SDGs (SDG2 – Zero hunger, SDG4 – Quality education, SDG5 – Gender equality, SDG6 –Clean water and sanitation, SDG13 – Climate action, SDG15 – Life on land, SDG17 – Partnerships for the goals). In the overall rankings our university ranked 1,201–1,500th, out of a total of 1,963 ranked universities (10 of which are Czech). The overall ranking is based on the results of the ranking in SDG 17 and the top three scores from the other SDGs. There are also rankings for each individual SDG. MENDELU achieved good results in SDG2 and SDG13, where it ranked first among Czech universities.
