SUSTAINABLE MENDELU

MENDELU HEADS SUSTAINABILITY WORKING GROUP OF CZECH RECTORS CONFERENCE

Mendel University in Brno has taken over leadership of the sustainability working group of the Czech Rectors Conference. The group’s guarantor is Rector Jan Mareš, and the secretary is Vice-rector for Strategy and Sustainability Martin Klimánek. The first meeting was held on 15 and 16 April at the chateau in Křtiny. University representatives shared their experiences with creating sustainability strategies and sustainability reports. They also discussed how to effectively communicate this subject to students and staff. They also addressed possible collaboration on ESG reporting and on joint green transformation funding projects. Currently, 19 university representatives are members of the working group, whose goal is to foster cooperation between institutions and promote sustainability as a key issue in university education.

MENDELU defends HR AWARD status

On 9 April 2025, Mendel University in Brno successfully defended the prestigious HR Excellence in Research Award. Two evaluators from the European Commission visited us as part of a site visit to assess the current state of implementation of the HR strategy and its future direction. The evaluators acknowledged the achievements the university has made since first being granted the award in 2018 and suggested modifications to the current strategy, some of which will be mandatory for confirmation of the award, whereas others are recommendations. The modifications are largely related to the greater involvement of academic and research staff in creating the HR strategy, further internationalization, and technology transfer. We will receive a written opinion outlining specific requirements and recommendations within a month. The university will then have two months to incorporate them. Once this task is completed, the award will be formally confirmed for another three-year period. Presentations from the defence are available here.

Projects submitted for funding from Czech Science Foundation grants for 2026

In early April of this year, grant applications for a total of 63 projects set to start in 2026, 48 of which are coordinated by MENDELU, were submitted by Mendel University in response to calls issued by the Czech Science Foundation. Twenty-four projects were submitted by the Faculty of AgriSciences, 23 by the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, 10 by the Faculty of Business and Economics, 3 by the Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies, 2 by the Faculty of Horticulture, and 1 by the Institute of Lifelong Learning.

Most applications were made for standard project grants focused on basic research, followed by applications to the JUNIOR STAR programme, which aims to support excellence in basic research and, by granting large amounts of funding over long periods of time, provides opportunities to early-career researchers. There was also a new opportunity to submit proposals for Return Grants.

Announcement of winners of JUNIOR STAR grants: 30 October 2025

Announcement of winners of STANDARD and Return Grants: 28 November 2025
