Beyond Experience the Spring 2024 Arts &
At Ball State, we recognize the importance of experiencing the arts. We want the community to have access to that experience. Arts Alive is an opportunity for Ball State students, faculty, staff and the greater Muncie community to experience world-class arts and artists at a fraction of the cost to see the same artists in major cities. Arts Alive is about exposing central Indiana to great art through classes, lectures, performances, and exhibits. Our performing arts facilities are beautiful and state of the art.

La Ruta: Walter Benjamin’s Last PassageJason Reblando and Joanne Diaz
For millennia, the Pyrenees Mountains have been the site of many kinds of crossings. In La Ruta: Walter Benjamin’s Final Passage, poet Joanne Diaz and photographer Jason Reblando consider two of these crossings: the arduous hike that philosopher Walter Benjamin took across the Pyrenees in 1940 as he evaded Nazi persecution; and the trek that 500,000 Spaniards took from Spain to France at the end of the Spanish Civil War. This collaborative word-image project explores the intersections of exile, migration, history, and landscape.
KATIE NEECE
AJ225 | APR. 10 | 6:00 PM
Imagining Haunting and the Failure of the Future - Katie Neece
Katie Neece’s work incorporates imagery from computer graphics software programs and related digital ephemera. She creates an artificial pictorial space using gradients, drop shadows, and flat areas to construct an illusionistic environment within the conventions of the screen and digital manifestations of space. Choosing to paint digital constructions draws attention to both advancments in technology and the advancements in the historical trajectory of painting. Simultaneously focusing on 90’s American mall aesthetic, pop culture, and design aesthetic, she incorporates and uses these forms as a reference to an inherent optimism in a utopian future that has ontinually failed to materialize. This recontextualization is an attempt to illustrate that the past continually reminds us of the future’s failure in the form of haunting.
