Welcome back to Coral Reef Yacht Club everyone!
Now that summer vacations are over, the Club is lling up as families and friends get back to their regular schedules. It may not feel much like fall, but the kids are back in school, football season has started, and cooler weather is around the corner. (Note to the Miami Dolphins: Please score many touchdowns for the Coral Reef faithful at the Reef Bar on game days).

While many of us were gone in August, the crew was busy doing annual maintenance work. Among other things, they replaced both motors on the large hoist (one of which had failed and the other was about to fail); the crew made repairs to the wall of the south basin; they replaced a large HVAC unit; replaced the veranda awning; and did repairs to the Reef Bar ceiling and bar top. We are also planning more extensive repairs to the kitchen next summer, which will be the subject of a future Reef Points column. Our Club looks great for a reason – we have a great crew who works hard to keep the place up. ere are a number of events to look forward to at the Club in September. A Bubbly and Bouquets event has been organized by the WOW Committee for Saturday, September 16 (thank you to Melissa Rieder and the rest of the organizers). e Ladies Day Committee is hosting a luncheon on September 20 with guest speaker Richard Rene Silvin, who will discuss “A Royal Scandal – e Duchess of Windsor and King Edward VIII.” e Ladies Day events are always fun thanks to our great committee led this year by Doreen Roseborough and Pat Hays. e rst ‘ esta’ of the season (the theme is Mexican Mash-Up) will be held on Saturday September 23. is promises to be a great time, thanks to Maria McCormick and the Entertainment Committee. e Cruising Committee, led by Dale Mills, is also planning a group cruise to Ocean Reef Club on September 29 and 30. ank you to everyone who volunteers their time on our committees to make our Club a great place.
Our youth sailing program is starting its fall season a er a record setting summer. Coral Reef Opti sailors won the team racing national championship (Team Vectran, made up of Oliver Holt, Charlie Julien, Connor Karr, Annie Ulmer, and omas Zaydon), the eet racing national championship (Annie Ulmer), and the girls eet racing national championship (Elizabeth Xydas). We are not sure when it last happened that a single Club won all three Opti National Championships, but Coral Reef did this year! Our Club 420 sailors competed in many events in the Northeast this summer, with Ryan Keenan and Christine Keedy Brown nishing in eighth place at the Club 420 North American Championship. Several Club members competed in United States and Europe in the ILCA (Laser) eet, led by Tanner Krygsveld and Brayden Benesch nishing seventh and eighth at the U.S. Youth Championship. Several Club members competed in I-420 regattas in Rhode Island and Spain, led by Freddie Parkin who nished in rst place and Audrey Russler and Ava McAliley who nished in ninth place at the U.S. Youth Championship. Two Club Members quali ed for the World Youth Championships in Brazil in December: Freddie Parkin in the I420 and Audrey Foley in the ILCA 6 (Laser). Our Club introduces many children to the sport of sailing, and it starts with the sound of their laughter in the Green Fleet.
I hope everyone has a great fall - welcome back to the Club!

Ladies Day Presents
“Stories of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor"
By Doreen Roseborough, Ladies Day Co-Chair
Welcome back to Ladies Day with a fabulous luncheon and program about King Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson. Wallis Simpson was guilty of four things: she was a woman, a commoner, a double-divorcee and an American; however, she still managed to storm the House of Windsor. She shook the English establishment and got her man, even when the man happened to be a king! She caused a scandalous abdication crisis when Edward gave up the British Crown for her - there was something about this femme fatale. Wallis was not a classic English rose, but her deep set violet blue eyes, perfectly arched brows and awless complexion made her a compelling individual. She was a woman of scandal and style who climbed high enough to catch the affections of the heir to the throne in 1936, Edward VIII.
Please join us on Wednesday, September 20th for a Ladies Day luncheon with guest speaker Richard Rene’ Silvin sharing his fascinating stories of the Duchess. You'll be welcomed with a complimentary ute of "Wallis Pink" bubbly for the cocktail hour. Mingle and peruse our ra e table with a fabulous collection of prizes also inspired by Wallis' exquisite style. Dining tables will be dressed with the Duchess's favorite color, "Ti any blue." e luncheon menu is a version of her simply surprising favorite foods as interpreted by our own Chef Eddie. Please make your reservations quickly, as this is sure to be a sellout event. See you then!

Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship
In other sailing news, Enzo Menditto (a sophomore at Georgetown University) bowman on Team Petersen, along with skipper Je rey Petersen (Junior at Georgetown) and Max Brennan, main and spinnaker trimmer, secured a rst-place victory at the 56thAnnual Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship Regatta in Newport Beach, California this summer. Behind a near-perfect performance, USA 's Petersen/Menditto/and Brennan swept Australia’s Cole Tapper in the best-of- ve nals. Teams from a record eight countries sailed in the prestigious event with three teams representing the USA. In what had been a mostly drama-free regatta, Petersen’s team faced its rst moment of pressure in the semi nals, when USA's Justin Callahan (a sophomore at Harvard) evened up the best-of- ve semi nal at 1-1 in the last race of Friday’s action, leaving the host club entry to sleep on its rst defeat of the event. Ultimately, Callahan and his team, including twin brother Mitchell (a sophomore at Harvard), Liam O’Keefe (Brown University) and Danny Riano, nished in 4th place. Next up, USA's Team Petersen, including Menditto and Callahan, will be competing at Youth Matching Racing Worlds in Sydney, Australia December 9-15.
2023 TUUCI Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta Volunteers Needed!
By Vince Menditto, 2023 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta Chair
In December, incoming Commodore McAliley asked if I would be interested in Chairing the 2023 OBIYR. Without hesitation, my beautiful wife Tina responded with a resounding ‘YES!’ So I write you today to ask YOU for your assistance.
December brings the XXth Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta and with it 600 sailors in Optimist RWB, Optimist Green, ILCA and Club 420 classes from around the world to Biscayne Bay. It remains the largest sailing event in the US and one of the premier events on the youth sailing calendar. In order to continuously pull o an event with hundreds of competitors in six classes, launching from three di erent venues, setting four separate race courses, I need your help, time, talent and boat, along with any friends and family you can muster.
Landside volunteers: Do you like air conditioning and have computer skills? Try registration or check-in or scoring. Like to go to the gym? Maybe launch Opti’s. Like to watch kids work? Try launching Club 420's. Know it all or willing to learn it all and like to smile? Try Landside Chair or hospitality.
Waterside volunteers: Have a boat? Like being on friends’ boat? Dozens of boats with crew, experienced or willing to learn, are needed for the four racecourses. Hoisting ags, setting marks, eet support and most importantly, ensuring the safety of all sailors.
Here’s the best part - volunteer perks include lunch, drink tickets (Commodore McAliley promised st-fulls) OBIYR swag and a daily post-racing happy hour at the Reef Top Bar.
Participation in this event is a great way to support your Club. We know the holidays are a time for family, but if you and your vessel are available December 26-30, I hope you will volunteer. And just know if you are volunteered by a loved one – that’s great too!
Volunteering early almost guarantees securing your favorite spot. Please email us at OBIYR@coralreefyachtclub.org or call me at 786-635-6613. I look forward to hearing from you!
