of LOVE
For Our Lady of Mount Carmel Pastor Fr. Leandro Fossá,
pictured above,
the massive, long overdue renovations to the Melrose Park Parish/Shrine bring him considerably more joy than stress. He smiles, anticipating that parishioners will be able to return to church by midMarch—and because this is
parish progress.

What’s in a name? A lot actually, despite the fact that Shakespeare thinks it doesn’t really matter According to the Bard, all you need to know is what something is, not what it’s named To a certain extent he might be right maybe it doesn’t matter what a rose is called but when it comes to many public buildings, highways and tollways, streets, colleges, libraries and parks, the opportunity to “designate” or give credit to an outstanding public servant, a selfless individual or a generous benefactor presents itself and it is a precious chance to honor and perpetuate their distinguished legacy.

Currently, a petition drive seeks to honor a most worthy woman and its success would accomplish two things, for sure: giving her the credit she truly deserves and naming a local public building for an amazing woman, which rarely ever happens. Without even knowing the whole story, I think most of you would be agreeable to signing the petition on those two facts alone because when I tell you her name there’s a good chance you might not have heard of her. After all, most people, when quizzed on the streets for late night comedy shows, can’t even name the first President of the United States, the three branches of government or a country on a map. So how likely is it that you are familiar with the story and the impact of Virginia Moe?

Thanks to a friend and author, Jane Morocco, together with Arcadia Publishing, Virginia Moe’s life’s work became a paperback in 2015. Moe first visited Trailside Museum at Chicago Avenue and Thatcher Avenue in River Forest in 1932; the Museum had just opened its doors within the historic 1876 mansion for the purpose of educating the public about the plants and animals in Cook County Within just a few years, Moe had become the Museum’s curator, living upstairs at the Museum for 52 years and on-call 24/7, never once taking a vacation Her dedication was etched in the mind of Morocco long before it was written on paper; at the age of 12, Morocco began working alongside Moe at the Museum as a volunteer and for the next 10 years, she would experience first-hand Moe’s compassion, determination and genuinely altruistic character.

Despite all that, the Museum was named for the late County Board member Harold “Hal” Tyrell shortly after his sudden death in 1990; and, as if she had never lived at all, Moe got an honorary street sign. Now, there is a second chance to make things right. A commission within the Cook County Forest Preserve District is presently working on the criteria for proposed renaming of Forest Preserve District sites. The petition, launched by Morocco, can be easily found on www.change.org then, in the search box, type Virginia Moe. To date, it has rallied over 600 signatures, including mine. “What Moe was to the Museum and to the community will never again be replicated,” said Morocco. “There’ll never be another like her I don’t want people to forget about her and that there was a place like that, once upon a time, Morocco told Chronicle Media recently

The poet Emily Dickinson wrote: “If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain.” A passionate, tireless public servant and human being, Virginia Moe cared for and rehabilitated thousands of “fainting robins,” injured and orphaned animals each year while, at the same time, inspiring countless children over five decades through her talks with them at the Museum. Consider signing the petition, neighbors. Her name on that building matters.

Giving credit where credit is due is a very rewarding habit to form. Its rewards are inestimable..

rom a promise to A PARIsH

In 1894, the seed was planted. Today that seedling has grown in to a vibrant parish that occupies an entire village block with three large parking facilities

The seedling consisted of a promise made by Emmanuela DeStefano and the commission of the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, sculpted in Naples in 1894 More than 100 years later, in 2006, the church was consecrated as an Archdiocesan Shrine by Bishop Thomas Paprocki, ensuring that it will be a place of pilgrimage for devotees for generations to come

Our Lady d of Mount Car mel Church to re-open in mid-March

a story by Tina Valentino

From his vantage point on the altar, Fr Leandro Fossá was not only focused on saying Mass but, week after week, his eyes couldn’t help but also focus on the deplorable condition of the church’s carpeting. Named pastor in October 2021, Fr Leandro knew that the minor improvement projects planned before the pandemic under the previous pastor, r Fr Giovanni Bizotto, must now finally come to fruition But he was also resigned to the fact that, if the carpeting and pews were going to be replaced, there would be no better time to tackle necessary issues that were much more than cosmetic.

Collaborations between the Archdiocese of Chicago, the parish Pastoral Council, parish Financial Council, parish business manager Xochitl Duran and members of the Feast Committee, resulted in a $700,000 capital

improvement project that could only be described as “ necessary. ” Since the cornerstone of the church was laid in 1967, pastor after pastor, most striving to be overly fiscally responsible, have refrained from spending and taking on much more than maintenance

“This is not merely about painting and beautifying, though it will be beautiful I think what we are doing is building something substantial for the next 50 years or more Some of our work will never have to be addressed again. We are fixing “ our home,” making it safer and more comfortable for generations to come. All those who know that this is their home are excited about it They know it was due time and the community deserves this,” explained the pastor as he pointed out some of the original construction features that are now liability issues.

While the Archdiocese of Chicago was “excited” to approve the project, no financial assistance was offered to the parish upon the signing of all formal contracts Behind the scenes, parish business manager Xochitl Duran oversees every penny and every potential problem. “My job is to be overly cautious to make sure we are in total compliance, to ensure funds are available, to take care of all financial details. As Fr. r Leandro proceeds with each step, I’ve got his back so that there are no mistakes made ”

Among the most significant accomplishments of the renovation are the new confessionals; relocating the baptismal font; greater exposure to the chapel; low-maintenance epoxy floors and carpeted aisles; new pews; and the removal of old organ pipes in the church ceiling to allow for much-improved acoustics

Pictured above, Fr. Leandro and Jaime Reyes admire the incredibly beautiful 2,000-pound baptismal font that was moved with a crane and pulley system from the lower level of the church’s corner to the front near the altar. Made from rare green Italian marble, the font has been unused for years because of the stairs that present a danger to anyone celebrating a baby’s christening In its new location, the special occasion is accessible to people of all ages and abilities

John Nardella, President of the Financial Council, member of the Parish Council and Feast Committee, has also played an integral part in the progress behind the scenes with Jaime Reyes, Joe Casale and general contractor/construction manager James Lorenzo of JVL Development, Inc “We’re always looking to see if we ’ ve covered every detail, every step, every fire alarm, checking to make sure everything is correct and up-to-date. Our intent has never been to change the look of the church but to make it ADA compliant, safe, accessible, free of liability. At the end of the day, much of the work that was needed will be things people won’t see. It was no surprise that the work snowballed from carpets and pews to this capital project Very little has been done since 1967 But for the parish and the community as a whole, this is an exciting time.”

Reyes agrees “Now, under this pastor, is the best time to take on this enormous challenge. The repairs have been needed for too long I’m proud and excited to be part of the transformation and can’t wait to see people’s reactions. Fr Leandro is the perfect person to lead the charge ”

“We are doing what is absolutely necessary, ” stressed Fr. Leandro, “and we have a list of necessary plans on the drawing board for at least the next 10 years the roof, parking lots, boilers. We’re not spending just to spend. We’re doing what any good homeowner would do ”

When asked why he took on this Herculean task, Fr. Leandro calmly replied, “Why not? I trust that Our Lady of Mount Carmel is walking alongside of me. ”

mayor serpico applauds chamber on another successful “ access to capital” event

More than 50 local business owners came together at the Melrose Park Senior Center last month for a seminar that provided businesses with strategies on how to access capital for business development, growth, and start-up opportunities. Industry leaders from financial institutions presented as part of a panel discussion focusing on various sources of funding. Pictured above, Chamber Board member Doug Olson makes introductions

“Addressing the need for capital for growth and innovation in local businesses and growing our local businesses impacts the growth of our community, y ” said Mayor Ron Serpico, “and I salute our Chamber for leading the way when it comes to information and opportunities for advancement.” Serpico encourages more businesses to tap into Chamber resources, including the upcoming events such as the Networking and Job Fair. On Wednesday, March 15, from 4 to 7 pm, The Melrose Park Chamber of Commerce and Community Development will host a business professional networking event at Crab Du Jour, 851 W. North Avenue. The MPCCCD's After Hours gives area business representatives the chance to make strategic connections in an informal setting For updates on events, visit www.mpcccd.org, join the Chamber, follow the Chamber Facebook page or call the office at 708-343-9500.
