I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.
David Bowie
Cheers to 22. It took a while to find a copy but it was worth flipping through the inaugural issue when I finally found one. A fat 48-pager, full of advertisers who took the plunge with me, particularly Gioacchino’s Ristorante and Pizzeria in Bellwood the first to get on board. It was a stroll down memory lane, for sure, to look back at the businesses who put their faith in the idea of a monthly magazine that would fill a local void giving them an affordable opportunity to reach a wider audience while promoting people and places that would otherwise go unnoticed. While a handful of our original anchors are still in business, many have closed, retired or changed owners. Landmarks like Kiddieland, Maywood Park Racetrack, Sorrento’s, Phoenix Oriental, Westlake Hospital, Mel-Park Deli & Liquors, Melrose Currency Exchange and TCF Bank provided the thrust needed to put the idea in flight And, while the flight wasn’t without considerable turbulence at first, including an intense court battle, we buckled our seatbelts and forged on
I wrote this back in 2002: “As this first issue was put together, I pictured it as having purchased a “handyman special” kind of house, a place that will undergo many changes, retain many favorite features while others will find themselves in the dumpster We’ll renovate it together, with your input and ideas, and in the end it will be a place where old friends and new will converge.” Not much has changed. Every one of the last 239 issues has been a labor of love, a sweat equity project aimed at partnering more than profiting. The fact that our advertising rates haven’t changed in more than a dozen years, despite paper and gas hikes is proof of that, though the current economy may force our hands. While there have been significant awards and honors along the way, the real gratification comes in so many other ways: from the advertisers who stayed with us during the pandemic despite their own economic hardships to the handwritten notes, an email or a total stranger who stops to say “I just love Neighbors Magazine.” Those moments make hauling bundles from town to town in the sweltering heat and freezing cold even as we are getting older and the bundles seem so much heavier worth it every time.
When Neighbors made its debut, there was no social media. Facebook didn’t become a “thing” until 2006 and Instagram didn’t roll around until 2010. Despite what some pundits say about digital replacing print media, we know for a fact that, until further notice, our readers like to hold a hard copy in their hands 99% of the time While making deliveries, sometimes a grocery store shopper or a bank customer will ask, “Is that the new issue?” and excitedly get theirs hot off the press Still, I am excited to utilize social media to reach as many people as possible, thrilled to have amassed nearly 3,000 followers on Facebook and we’re breaking new ground on Instagram all the time
I used to say to my mom all the time I wish I had a real job with a 401K and insurance and paid sick days and vacation time I should’ve never started my own business These deadlines are killing me, working around the clock sometimes for not much money is ridiculous I’m sure every small business owner has said the same thing at some point Thanks, mom, for always listening and for riding shotgun on countless deliveries; and thanks to all of you who saved me from punching a clock, long commutes, a crabby boss and soggy lunches. Keep supporting local it makes communities strong and it makes ideas a reality. August is a month full of local festivals and fun live large and use this issue as your guide take lots of pictures, dance like no one is watching, eat the panzerotti.

CAROL SPALE
Presented with the Ultimate Angel Award
North Riverside’s Neighborhood Services Committee wasn’t established until 1992 but Carol Spale was inspiring people with “the art of caring” long before the first official meeting took place. With Carol at the helm, area representatives and block captains, joining forces with the Parks and Recreation Department, created a program from scratch that would eventually become a model for towns, churches, even businesses, nationally and internationally, ensuring that no one would ever feel alone. Carol’s manual, “Neighbors All: Creating a Community One Block at a Time,” has been the blueprint for this amazing program for more than 30 years
At the regular Neighborhood Services meeting on Tuesday, May 28, Mayor Joseph Mengoni made a special presentation and grateful remarks. “Carol has given numerous Angel Awards to our residents but, at the end of the day, she is the ultimate angel, taking a concept and shaping it into a program that proves one person can make a difference.” A one-of-a kind glass plaque was engraved with these words: Making The Difference Awarded to Carol Spale for your loyal dedication and unwavering commitment Thank you for your significant contributions toward our goals and your indispensable support of our mission Ultimate Angel Award 1992-2024
The Mayor, Trustees, Village Administrator Sue Scarpiniti, department heads, Riverside Township Supervisor Vera Wilt and a room packed with friends, family and residents from every corner of the town applauded the champion of random acts of kindness Pictured, Carol Spale surrounded by the Mayor and Board; left to right, Trustees Fernando Flores, Terri Sarro, Nick Tricoci, Mayor Joseph Mengoni, Trustees Jason Bianco and Debbie Czajka
