Message from the Director When I met Tennessee Williams in 1977, never did I dream that years later I would be directing his biggest success, The Glass Menagerie. At that time, I was making my living as an actress, not a director and was more interested in what he had to say about Blanche du Bois the character I was playing than what the director was trying to obtain from me. Now, I admit that acting in his plays (I went on to do Hannah in Night of the Iguana in Miami) has given me great insight on how to reach the soul of the characters he created. The Glass Menagerie is so rich with lyrical poetry, dramatic catastrophe and deeply layered characters that it has been an honor to explore this play with the four talented local actors you will see tonight. They have worked and sweated through an emotional rehearsal process and I believe they have created wonderful characters. As for me, it has been a labor of love and if Tennessee Williams was still alive I believe he would've been proud of this production. I am proud of our cast who has become a true ensemble, playing off each other in the tumultuous, emotional journey of a wonderful play. I am also grateful for the lighting talent of Chuck Morris, who brought to this production the sensitivity required for a memory play and to Neal Brackett, our producer-his help was unfathomable! What more can I say except I am proud to have been part of this production. For you audiences who bought tickets for a night in the theatre-all I can say is laugh and cry. The Glass Menagerie will make you do both!

This past year, the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation was created to help secure funding to restore the DeSoto Theatre to its former splendor. With assistance from the Fox Theatre Institute, the tireless work of many volunteers and generous donations from our members and friends, the rehabilitation process has begun with the repair of the ornate plasterwork in the vestibule and the complete remodeling of the upstairs meeting rooms. Although much has been done, many more restoration projects are needed. Please join us in our effort to revive this important part of Rome’s history by becoming a

The Glass Menagerie Biographies Neal Brackett (Producer) This is Neal's sixth time in the producer's chair. He began this run in partnership with Gordon Leiter on Bart McGullion’s Murdermind. His relationship with the Rome Little Theatre began with a walk through the back door carrying percussion equipment for his wife, Kim, for the Prospect Theatre production of Kismet. His wife has appeared in the orchestra for many musicals since. It did not take long for the RLT to become a family affair. His two oldest sons were in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Soon, Neal found his place onstage as Maycomb County Sherriff Heck Tate in To Kill A Mockingbird. After that it was a string of musicals with memorable moments. He carried his middle child, Chase, on his shoulders as Bob Cratchitt in Scrooge: The Musical. He got to make teens do pushups on stage in Footloose. He stage-managed strippers in Gypsy. Neal has performed as a Civil War re-enactor with the Cherokee Artillery in 7 states and in Frank Wildhorn’s The Civil War at the City Auditorium. Neal last produced this season’s The Man Who Came to Dinner. Next season he will produce Shakespeare In

Hollywood and will team again with Gail Deschamps in another Tennessee William’s play, A Street Car Named Desire. Away from the theatre Neal serves as Chief of Staff at North Broad Animal Clinic. Sarah Conklin (Sound) Sarah has worked behind the scenes for her high school drama productions, but this is the first play for which she has worked with sound since 2005. The Glass Menagerie Biographies Gail Deschamps (Director) Gail is very familiar with the works of Tennessee Williams, both as an actress and director. In 1977, she met the playwright while performing his most famous role, Blanche Dubois, in A Streetcar named Desire. "It was most memorable to be able to talk to Tennessee Williams about Blanche," Gail said, "and receiving his notes after the rehearsal was incredible! I will never forget him." After rave notices, Gail went on to perform Hannah in The Night of the Iguana at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami under the direction of Tennessee Williams' close friend, George Keathley. Gail is the former artistic director of Florida Shakespeare Festival, where she directed plays for 15 years, and former artistic director of GMT Productions here in Rome. She has won many honors for theatre excellence, is a recipient of an individual artist grant from the state of Georgia, and shares with her husband, Robert, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rome Area Council for the Arts. Nancy Dobbs (Laura) Nancy works full-time at Berry College, part-time at KaleidoSno on Broad Street, and studies graphic art design. No longer able to ignore her ever-growing love for music and working with children, she will be taking classes this summer at Berry toward a music education degree, followed this fall by work on music certificates from Boston's Berklee College of Music. In her free time, she enjoys singing, playing jazz, and writing parody songs. Among her favorite interests are steampunk fashion/culture and Sailor Moon. The

Glass Menagerie is Nancy's fourth play at RLT. She has appeared as Aunt Tilly in It's A Wonderful Life, Sharon Lake in Play It Again, Sam, and Contrary Mary in Babes in Toyland. Nancy knew her character, Laura, would be elusive but now recognizes she is the most difficult character she has ever portrayed because she and Laura are so alike. Getting to know and live Laura has been an experience Nancy will never forget. Along the tiring yet beautiful journey she has made with her fellow cast members, she is grateful to Chris for the laughs, Michael for the patience, Mary for the support, Gail for the vision, and the character Laura Wingfield for helping her become. She dedicates her performance to her beautiful mother, her talented sister, and to the memory of her daddy. Michael Hillman (Tom) Michael is an English teacher at Calhoun City High School where he enjoys teaching The Glass Menagerie because of Williams' poetic language and his wonderful use of symbolism. Therefore Michael is very excited to be playing the role of Tom in RLT's production of the play. Michael has been involved in theater for 10 years. Among the many plays in which he has appeared at RLT, audiences may remember him as Alan in Play It Again, Sam and Renfield in Dracula. Prior to being involved at RLT, Michael appeared onstage at Calhoun Little Theater, where he appeared as Tony in Dial M for Murder and Meyers in Witness for the Prosecution, among others. Chuck currently serves as President of the RLT Board of Directors. Chuck has directed A Christmas Carol, The Radio Play, Clue the Musical, On Golden Pond and You Can't Take it With You at RLT. Chuck co-founded the Cedartown Theatrical Performers' Company with Bill and Catharine Lundy, in order to provide performing opportunities for children and teenagers in Polk County. Chuck codirected/co-produced The Wizard of Oz, A Christmas Carol, Annie, The Sound of Music, and Seussical the Musical with CPTC. Chuck is married to the lovely and talented Megan Keating, who he first met while they were both volunteering to work on an RLT production. Chuck thanks Megan for her support in these many endeavors. Chris Parker (Jim) Chris is making his Rome Little Theatre debut with The Glass Menagerie. He is a teacher for Rome City Schools and also serves as commander of the U.S. Army Reserve's 209th Broadcast Operations Detachment here in Rome. A former member of the Berry College Theatre Company and student of Gail Deschamps, Chris has returned to the stage after a 17-

year break. He was studying at Berry when, in 1994, he decided on a different path and left school to enlist in the U.S. Army Reserve. After serving as a broadcast journalist here in Rome and in Bosnia, Chris earned a degree in government from Berry College and a master's degree in leadership from Shorter College. He also served in Kuwait as platoon leader of a postal service platoon and began his teaching career in 2008 at North Heights Elementary. In 2010 Chris was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, where he supervised original radio and television news production for American Forces Network. He is currently working toward an education specialist degree in curriculum and instruction. Chris lives in Rome with his wife, Ivey, and their daughter, Olivia. Mary Walker (Amanda) Mary has been involved in theater for eight years, both onstage and in the wings as stage manager or part of the stage crew. RLT audiences may remember her as Miss Maudie in To Kill a Mockingbird, Olive in The Odd Couple, The Female Version, Jenny in Chapter Two, and Clairee in Steel Magnolias. While everyone has their favorites, she believes each role offers its own opportunities and rewards. Mary is mother to three grown children and "MeeMee" to Michael, James, and Emma. She works as a family service counselor for Memorial Gardens in Rome. Mary is honored and humbled to be working with the talented Gail Deschamps and the amazing cast of The Glass Menagerie.
