I

had an hour or so to sit down with my busy friend Wayne Jones recently, the director of “The Three Little Pigs and The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf.” This caring, dedicated Rome Little Theatre volunteer could never evoke fear in anyone, so no matter how many frustrations he may experience, nobody could be afraid of this big, bad Wayne! Wayne is the long-serving Treasurer of the Rome Little Theatre Board of Directors, and he has been volunteering at RLT since 2001, when he made his first appearance onstage as an actor in the ensemble of “Oliver!” I was privileged to share the stage with Wayne in that production, and even more privileged to work with him for several years on the staff at Floyd College (now Georgia Highlands College) and on multiple productions since. I count him as one of my most trusted stage managers when I direct, and we both won Roman Awards together for “It’s A Wonderful Life” the first time it was presented, and we most recently appeared onstage together in the 2012 production of “The Sound of Music.” Theatre is Wayne’s passion, even though by day he is a mild mannered accountant with a new office above Traditions at the corner of Second Ave and First Street. “The Three Little Pigs and the Trial of the Big Bad Wolf” is Wayne’s eighth directing venture at RLT. He also has directed for the former Triple Threat Arts Company, a comedy called “Radio T.B.S.” He has appeared in numerous shows for them, for RLT and for the Junior Service League Follies, winning two Roman Awards along the way for leading actor in “It’s A Wonderful Life” and for featured actor in “Twelve Angry Men.” His first show to direct at RLT was the Christmas musical, “The Homecoming,” followed by two more Christmas shows, “The Christmas Angel” and “Dad’s Christmas Miracle.” His late wife Wanda produced all of these shows for him, and they were a very strong team. But Wayne’s next show to direct, “Alice in Wonderland,” was the RLT selection for the annual children’s show, and Wayne recognized

By Wendell Barnes the need for kids to learn theatre basics and get some experience on stage, so he has directed several children’s shows since then. We both acknowledged the contributions of the late Sherrie Bacon and the Creative Playhouse, who for years provided basic theatre instruction and experience for young Romans, and some of those same children are now adults on the RLT and other stages. So as he would do, Wayne came to the rescue to direct these large cast shows with lots of children because he saw a need for a director and he wanted to help out the theatre in any way he could. And so here he is once again, directing a show with a cast of 39, mostly children and young adults. “The Three Little Pigs” and “The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf” are actually two one-act plays which Wayne has put together into a full evening of theatre as a two-act play. He even added in some lines and put characters from one play into the other one so that the production would appear to be two acts of the same play! When I asked Wayne what the worst experience was in directing this show, he listed the younger actors as a challenge, since you have to start with the most basic stage directions, projection and body positions and work from there, usually with a young experienced actor who has a short attention span. It also is difficult for people new to theatre to understand about the commitment: I often have said theatre is such an erratic hobby, because you have to work very hard and continuously for several weeks and then it’s over and you might not work in another play for several months or years. Because of the summer rehearsal schedule, he also had to work around vacations and camps, and said that it was last week before he had a rehearsal with the entire cast present! But that is why RLT starts with a children’s show in the fall: so that the rehearsal period can be longer due to interruptions. It is difficult to make first timers especially understand the need to come to every rehearsal for which they are called. He also shared that the fall children’s show always has a preview in mid-July at the library, and it is always a challenge to get the lines memorized and costumes and props built in time for that preview, although in the long run it puts you ahead of the game for opening night.

e welcome our new Board members, Tammy Childers, Paul Culotta, Mandy Maloney and Chris Parker. We also welcome Megan Keating to her new position as Executive Director, as she transitions from RLT's Communication VP/graphic designer to the person responsible for the day to day business of the theatre. Feel free to come by and visit her in our temporary office space upstairs. We're looking forward to moving back downstairs soon, when we have renovated restrooms and office spaces for us and Tiff Magruder. There will also be a new concessions area and a new parlor area then. Over 200 people celebrated our very successful season at the Eco Center on June 29, with Roman Awards, entertainment, a raffle, silent auctions, dance party and river cruise.

Our Young Actors Workshop was held for 2 weeks in July. "Old Actors" Chris Parker and Michael Hillman filled the days with lots of theatre, and the final performance on July 26th gave the audience a chance to enjoy the results. They are planning to offer some 2 day theatre workshops during school breaks this year, so look for more information soon. Debby Brown was remembered at the DeSoto this summer. (RLT's NIGHT FOR DEBBY on June 8 and 7 Hills Storytellers' DEBBY'S MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM on July 19). Both events celebrated Debby's love for theatre, stories, local history and art, with the proceeds helping her family take care of funeral expenses. In case you haven't renewed your membership for 2013-14 there is still time… Don't forget us! We need you! «

See you at the theatre!

MEET RLT'S FIRST EVER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MEGAN KEATING! By Wendell Barnes

O

n July 1, 2013, RLT made a significant leap forward in becoming the dream we all would like to see realized, when Megan Keating took over as the first Executive Director of the Rome Little Theatre. Megan brings a strong business and volunteer background to this newly created position, which has been on the drawing board for the Board for some time but now has finally become a reality. She comes directly from owning her own business, Keating Design Works, for the past fifteen years, and for eight of those years, RLT has been a huge beneficiary of her graphic design talents, which she has voluntarily rendered to us for that long. Anyone who has attended a production here has seen her handiwork in the programs, tickets, audition announcements, cast photos, t-shirts and posters for the productions. Our print publicity has reached a level of professionalism that will rival any community theatre’s print works in the country, thanks to her expertise. She is currently wrapping up that business now since taking over this new position at RLT, although we will still see her handiwork on all of our shows. I first met Megan backstage in 2005, when her twelve-year old son Grayson played one of the Snow children in the production of “Carou-

ell, after you've been to all six "…Trials of the Big Bad Wolf," you are sure to be seeking out some other theatre opportunities in the area, so come with me on a journey to other offerings in the next two months Beyond the RLT! With school starting back, that means the two college theatre departments are kicking off their seasons. Shorter University Theatre is staring with Henrik Ibsen's intense classic drama, "A Doll's House," the story of a housewife who suffers from a crippling secret that she keeps from her husband, the revelation of which results in unexpected outcomes. The play will be performed in the Callaway Theatre and will run Sept. 26th-28th and Sept. 30th-Oct. 1st at 7:30 p.m. each night. Remember that the Callaway Theatre seats less than 100 in the audience so call soon for reservations at 706-2337288 or reserve online at boxoffice@shorter.edu. The web site is www.shorter.edu/academics/arts/theatre. Berry College Theatre Company will be kicking off their season with a musical revue of Rodgers' and Hammerstein's "A Grand Night for Singing," and this show will run Sept. 26th-Oct. 6th, so for the first time in many years people involved at Shorter can see some of the shows at Berry, since usually they overlap. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. nightly except

sel” that I directed, and she volunteered to help with set decoration. Her first production to be involved in was “Tom Sawyer” two years earlier when Grayson was ten and had a major role in his acting debut. Megan brought him to rehearsals, and instead of just dropping him off, sat in the auditorium, reading a novel and observing. Eventually she asked if she could help, and since she is an artist, she started working on the sets and props. In 2006 she worked with make-up, hair and costumes for “Cats,” and where she met her future husband, Chuck Morris. Eventually due to Grayson’s work onstage, she ultimately learned many theatre skills including set design and construction, painting, props, hair, make-up, costumes, and finally stage managing. In one of the past seasons, she stage managed five of the six productions that year! And all of this experience and knowledge she gained just because she wanted to volunteer at RLT, so that she and Grayson could share the experience together. RLT has gained many valuable volunteers through the years because parents volunteer to help out while their children participate, and RLT has become known as a family organization. I often plead with people at auditions to come and volunteer in other ways and get to know the family at RLT, and in that way get involved and enjoy the community of RLT. Megan is living proof of where that volunteerism can lead. She says she had no intention of applying for this position, but she did due to the encouragement of others. (Continued online )

The Friends of the Constitution, a local chapter, is presenting "Founding Fathers," a new play in honor of Constitution Day, for one night only on Saturday, Sept. 14th at 7:30 p.m. at the Rome City Auditorium, directed by RLT's own Virginia M. McChesney. You will recognize many familiar faces from RLT, including Gordon Leiter, Keith Williams, Tom Carver, Chase Brackett, Dave Willis, Bruce Watson, many others and myself as Ben Franklin. Get to the RCA early beginning at 4:30 and play the quiz game on the grounds outside, and you can win free admission plus a coupon for a restaurant discount on Broad Street! Calhoun Little Theatre has postponed indefinitely their latest production, "The Queen of Bingo," but auditions for their next show, the classic comedy "Arsenic and Old Lace" will be held in the Ratner Theatre at the Harris Arts Center on Sept. 5th at 6:30 or Sept. 7th at 10:00 a.m. The show will be performed in mid-November. More information is available at www.harrisartscenter.com (and click on "events.") The Pumphouse Players in Cartersville will be presenting "Convention" a new comedy billed as "two days of comic books gone bad." The show will run Sept. 13th-21st. xciting events are being planned for Rome Little Theatre and we need committee members and volunteers. Please let me know if you are interested in serving on a committee (any committee, I will hook you up). As far as events go, we are working on the following and can use assistance on all. If you can’t volunteer to work we hope you will mark your calendars and plan to participate. This is the best way to get to know fellow members and to give back to the theatre. Some committees work all season and some are for a short time. Reach out and let us put you to work (fun stuff!!)

October 31: RLT is providing the Halloween photo area at the mall this year and we need a design for the booth, workers to set it up and take it down. This is a one day event but we do not have to work the event. We need an information table designed and set up. November 9: HDTF is holding its Music Festival with the TAMS and we need concession, ushers, ticket booth and ticket/program volunteers. December 3: DDA Christmas Parade – RLT wants to enter a float in the Christmas Parade. We need a committee to plan this participation, design the float and get it created and manned for the parade. We want to win “Best Float” in this event too so we need some creative ideas. 2014 Committees

October 1-5: Coosa Valley Fair – RLT will have a booth this year where we will promote our entire season. We need help with design, set up, manning of the booth and strike. We need to win the “Best Booth” award. Get competitive and help us make this happen. October 12: RLT’s 3 Hour Tour on the Roman Holiday – This is an upscale event where we hope to raise $10,000 to replace our stage curtains. We need help with the planning, the decorating, costuming, working the event and clean up. We are also looking for Gilligan’s Island characters to be at the event. Thurston Howell III, Lovely and Ginger need to be guests. The others can be servers and workers at

RLT GALA – looking for committee members (meetings will start in January) RLT Leadership Day – looking for committee members – no date selected yet (meetings will start in January) Please email tracy@desototheatre.com to volunteer or to express your interest in serving on a committee.
