YOU DON’T NEED A MASTER’S TO DIRECT “SHAKESPEARE…” BUT IT HELPS! By Wendell Barnes

I

had a chance to sit down with the talented director of RLT’s next show, “Shakespeare in Hollywood,” Virginia McChesney, and we both found out some things about each other that we didn’t already know! Virginia and I met in a costume class in the theatre department at the University of Georgia in 1972, over 40 years ago, and we have been friends ever since. At RLT, she directed me as Rev. John Hale in “The Crucible,” and I have directed her as Queen Aggravain in “Once Upon a Mattress,” both memorable situations for both of us. I had great difficulty with Rev. Hale’s dialogue since many of the lines were similar (I must have tried to keep straight at least twenty different terms to describe the devil, so many lines were similar!), and Virginia doubted she could carry off the singing role of Aggravain in the musical. I got through it, barely, much to my disappointment at not being perfect for my friend, and she was a hilarious smash in one of the few (if not the only) musicals she has performed in with my encouragement and assurance. As the only person at RLT with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in drama and theatre, she is an invaluable resource to our community theatre, and she claims to have been involved in over 120 productions here and has directed well over 50. She is also fond of saying she has done everything at RLT from scrubbing toilets to running the box office to directing shows, and she has! She usually directs at least one show per season with RLT, and performs in at least one each season too, and she is a familiar face in the box office. The first show Virginia directed at RLT was “Never Too Late,” and she remembers that the cast was many of the founders of RLT, many of whom have since passed away but are fondly remembered, such as Dan Biggers and Abby Snyder. She really couldn’t pick a favorite, but Virginia especially enjoys bringing life to classic dramas and comedies, and audiences of recent years will remember the wonderful job she did on “Play It Again, Sam,” “Inherit the Wind,” “To Kill A Mockingbird,” “Chapter Two,” “And Then There Were None,” and “The Man Who Came to Dinner” along with her many other victories. She also remembers her first performance on stage at RLT as Lady Alice in “A Man for All Seasons.” Virginia, with your experience and talent, we think you should stick to directing and performing and leave the toilet BACKSTAGE PASS JUNE/JULY 2013

scrubbing to someone else from now on! Virginia is also one of the elite few who has been justifiably awarded an RLT Lifetime Membership Award and is one of the only performing artists to be awarded the Rome Area Council of the Arts Artist of the Year Award. But she’s doing all she does for the love of the theatre, and she does not relish the accolades or honors, as you will know if you have ever tried to find her backstage after a production to congratulate her. And these are all factors which will bring us to the reason why Virginia wanted to use her considerable talents to direct the 2003 play, “Shakespeare in Hollywood.” The play is written by Ken Ludwig, the comic genius behind such wonderful plays as “I Hate Hamlet,” “Moon Over Buffalo,” “Lend Me A Tenor,” and so many other plays and adaptations. Virginia said that after reading the play, she wanted to direct this wonderful comedy because “it made me laugh.” The play is about the making of the Hollywood movie of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” so it is a play about the making of a movie version of a play. There are characters in this play that are real and fictional, and there even is a time-travel element when two of the characters from the play become real and come to Hollywood in 1935. Max Reinhardt, James Cagney, and Dick Powell will all make an appearance too. Virginia said our audiences can expect all kinds of surprises, so pay careful attention from the first to the final curtain, or you might miss Tarzan, the fairies, the men in tights, the lion, the rapid-fire “Seinfeld”-like repartee, and a plethora of other surprises. Virginia said her greatest joy in directing this show has been the impressive commitment of so many of the actors, while her only real issue is others in the cast who have not shown the same level of commitment. Hopefully all will learn from the experience of working with this amazing, organized and dedicated director. So what’s next for this talented RLT icon? Well, she’s looking forward to directing the final production next season, the Jones-HopeWooten comedy “The Dixie Swim Club,” and I can personally recommend that production as I have directed two plays by this trio of comedy writers and I can guarantee a good time will be had by all. Finally, I asked Virginia what one show would she really like to direct if she had the chance, and she thought for a moment and said “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” (by Tom Stoppard.) Let that be a warning and a challenge, all of you who vote for a season at RLT! Virginia and I both saw an unforgettable production of this show at UGA forty years ago, and we have never forgotten it, and it’s high time for a local production! And thank you, Virginia, for all you mean to RLT (and to me!) Always, Virginia is a Master at work no matter which room of the theatre she occupies! « Page 1

he RLT community was stunned and saddened by the sudden death of Honorary Lifetime Member Debby Brown. For many, many years, Debby was a permanent fixture and friendly familiar face for people who came to the Theatre. Wayne Jones left a wonderful tribute to Debby on our Message Board, that best describes RLT’s feelings for her: “Although we were proud to share Debby’s talents with the community, she was truly an RLT family member in the strongest sense of the word. As far back as I am allowed to go, I know she co-directed Jack and the Giant with her son Quintin, and produced at least 12 shows –The Hobbit, Treasure Island, Jane Eyre, A Night of One Acts, Tom

Brown on the loss of their Mom, Debby Brown, who gave so much to RLT. It's graduation time, and we especially congratulate all our RLT graduates as they move on to new phases of their lives. Keep in touch with us! The Executive Director applications are being accepted until June 1st, and hopefully we'll be welcoming him or her into the important position soon. It looks like my parttime position as Office Manager will evolve into a part/part-time position as Box Office Manager, so I will be able to enjoy more time with family and friends. «

See you at the theatre! Sawyer, Camelot, Jack & the Giant, Miracle on 34th Street, Les Miserables, Nuptials, Trick or Treat, and Angel Street. She also spearheaded several special projects, such as many Haunted Theatres (she was crazy about Halloween!), several Kid’s Theatre Camps, where many future RLT stars began their stage careers, and of course, one of her final projects, the two Reel Trees events that gave us the beautiful ceiling in the arcade. Debbie served for at least 5 years as VP of Production, 2 years as VP of Membership, several years as an At-Large Member of the Board, and for many, many shows was House Manager, Graphic Designer, Window Decorator, Set Decorator, and served on many Casting Committees. Her lasting impression on RLT, however, in this person’s humble opinion, is how successful she was into making us a “big tent”–getting so many of us into the RLT family. In my RLT life, no one has been better at doing this, and this is to me a lasting legacy, and why even now, several years after her active involvement, we continue to succeed and thrive. It is a trite statement to say Debby will be missed, not only in our family but in our arts and historic community here. A giant packed into a small body is what she was. She will always be loved and missed by those of us lucky enough to have been part of her magic.” Rome Little Theatre would like to present the June 8th performance of Shakespeare in Hollywood as ”A Night for Debby.” All proceeds from this performance will go to Debby’s family. An Important Letter from RLT President To: Members of the Rome Little Theatre From: Chuck Morris, Rome Little Theatre President RE: Nominations for Officers and Directors for 20132014 and proposed amendment to the Rome Little Theatre Bylaws Date: May 23, 2013 In accordance with the Rome Little Theatre Bylaws, the following persons were selected by the Nominating Committee, and approved by the Board of Directors, as candidates for the following positions: President: Chuck Morris (Incumbent, to serve a two year term to end June 30, 2015) Vice President of Production: Tiff Magruder (Two year term to end June 30, 2015) Vice President of Public Relations: Neal Brackett (Two year term to end June 30, 2015) Secretary: Tammy Childers (Two year term to end June 30, 2015) Members at Large of the Board of Directors: Suzanne Clonts (Incumbent, to serve a two year term to end June 30, 2015) Paul Culotta (Two year term to end June 30, 2015) Mandy Maloney (To complete Neal Brackett’s unexpired term, to end June 30, 2014.) Mary Walker (Incumbent, to serve a two year term to end June 30, 2015) Any member of Rome Little Theatre who desires to stand for election to one of these positions may follow the RLT Election procedures, set forth below. Additionally, the Board of Directors has approved one proposed amendment to the By-Laws. The proposed amendment will allow us to sell tickets to all shows through our new on-line ticketing system, and allow seat selection at the beginning of the season. All patrons will have “first come first serve” access to their choice of seats. This eliminates the membership benefit of early seat selection which was previously a benefit held exclusively by RLT members. ARTICLE V: Elections Section 4. Upon approval by the Board of Directors, the membership shall be notified of the proposed candidates at least thirty (30) days prior to the annual meeting. Section 5. Any member wishing to be nominated or who wishes to nominate someone for an officer’s position or a position to the Board of Directors shall submit that name in writing to the Board of Directors, with five (5) other signatures of members in good standing and the written permission of the person nominated, not less than twenty (20) days prior to the annual meeting.

Section 6. The revised list of candidates for Officers and Members of the Board of Directors, upon verification of eligibility, will be mailed to the membership at each member’s last known address not less than five (5) days prior to the annual meeting. Section 7. There shall be no nominations from the floor. Section 8. In the event that there is more than one (1) candidate for any office, voting for that office shall be held separately from uncontested offices, and shall be by secret ballot. Section 9. Election to any Office or position on the Board of Directors will be by a simple majority of the members present, a quorum of twenty-five (25) members having been met.

2013 Annual Meeting: Proposed Amendment to Rome Little Theatre By-Laws Article I, Section 2 of the By-Laws presently reads as follows: Section 2. All members shall enjoy the rights and privileges pertaining to membership, including all phases relating to the production of plays. Members shall have the opportunity to make reservations on a first-come/first-serve basis for all regular season productions before the Box Office is opened to the general public.

The Board of Directors proposes that Article I, Section 2 of the By-Laws should be amended to strike the phrase “before the Box Office is opened to the general public.” The revised Section 2 will read as follows: Section 2. All members shall enjoy the rights and privileges pertaining to membership, including all phases relating to the production of plays. Members shall have the opportunity to make reservations on a first-come/first-serve basis for all regular season productions. (Ratified by the Board of Directors at May 21, 2013 meeting. To be proposed at the June 29, 2013 Annual Meeting.)

Comment: This amendment is designed to modernize our ticketing practices using our on-line ticketing system. The ticketing system will allow any purchaser to reserve their particular seat(s) at the time of purchase. This will be an improvement over our current manual ticketing practices. However, this feature does not give a preference for a member’s seat selection over a non-member’s seat selection. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you June 29th at the Annual Meeting & Gala!

fter you have laughed with all of the Hollywood luminaries at all six performances of “Shakespeare in Hollywood,” and marveled over another masterful Virginia M. McChesney production, you are sure to be searching for other theatre experiences “Beyond the RLT.” So come with me as we explore what’s going on at theatres near us. Of course, the college theatre departments are closed down for the summer, but we are looking forward to their new fall seasons to be announced soon. Berry is already out, and we know that they will kick off their season with the wonderful musical, “A Grand Night for Singing,” a revue of the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, the end of September. More information about this and Shorter’s new season will follow in the August Backstage Pass. Most of you also probably already know that we are expecting some major renovations to the DeSoto this summer, so there is also no scheduled summer performance here either. But there are lots of other things going on near us to satisfy your theatre sweet tooth! Calhoun Little Theatre at the Ratner Theatre inside the Harris Arts Center is presenting “A Grand Night for Singing” before Berry does it May 30th-June 2nd. Performances are at 7:00 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. www.harrisartscenter.com/committees is where you can reserve your tickets. Later in the summer they will be presenting the comedy classic, “Arsenic and Old Lace, August 23rd-31st., and you will be reminded of this in the next newsletter. Pumphouse Players at the Legion Theatre in Cartersville is always busy. May 31st-June 8th will see their production of Steve Martin’s hilarious comedy, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.” Following that this summer, their children’s

production of “A Little Princess” will be presented June 28th and 29th. More information is available at www.pumphouseplayers.com. For the first time since I have been writing this column, nothing is scheduled to be going on at the web site of the Fox in Atlanta after the run of “Sister Act,” the musical that originated at the Alliance Theatre a few years ago and then just closed a long run on Broadway, playing the Fox April 23rd-28th for eight performances. There are a number of concerts and special shows coming up, but no Broadway shows listed on the Fox website. But a little birdie told me to check with Theatre of the Stars, and I learned that “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story,” the long-running West End musical about the life of the rock and roll superstar gone too soon, will grace the Fox July 9th-14th. Later in the month those mischievous Andrew Lloyd Webber “Cats” will purr their way into the Fox July 23rd-28th for the umpteenth glorious return, to be followed by another homecoming, Atlantan Jennifer Holliday in her Tony-winning role as Effie in “Dreamgirls” August 2nd11th. And before summer ends, the hit Roundabout Theatre revival of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” will play the Fox August 20th-25th. The Broadway in Atlanta series will start at the Fox in November with “Ghost,” the musical version of the popular Academy Award-winning movie. So there is lots to look forward to in the coming year at the Fabulous Fox! www.foxtheatre.org The Alliance’s last show of the season, the glorious new musical in its American premiere, “Zorro,” was lots of fun, loaded with Spanish influenced music by the Gipsy Kings and lots of flamenco dancing, but it ends on May 5th, and I’m sorry if you missed it. It was magnificent, and hopefully Broadway bound! Their new season is set to begin in September with a new musical, “Harmony,” with music written by the one and only Barry Manilow!
