The RLT Wizard of “Ahhhs” and OZ!

SPOTLIGHT

on shows

I took a few moments two weeks before the show to sit down with “The Wizard of Oz” director, Don Rusaw, to get a little background about the show. A native of New York state, Don first came to RLT in the summer of 1973 when he did the program for the RLT production of “The Hobbit” at the old Maple Street location. In the fall of 1974 he was cast in his first leading role at RLT as Paul in “A Shot in the Dark” the first time RLT did that show. The first show he directed at RLT was “Arsenic and Old Lace” in 1975. Overall, he has directed 35 plays, musicals, and follies, 29 of them being at RLT including 18 musicals and one Junior Service League Follies held at the DeSoto. I asked Don what kinds of problems he had with this production. Most of you know that originally RLT had selected Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” to be done in this slot, but the rights were pulled by R & H Theatricals because a production of that script opened on Broadway this spring (for the first time!--three productions have been on television, but this is the first time it has appeared on Broadway.) So the Board had to change the plan for the season and for this director, and assigned “The Wizard of Oz” to him instead. Then the Board had to change the original dates of the show to two weeks sooner due to school schedules and the dates of the CRCT tests. So Don began to face this challenge with two strikes against him 2013 already! But, he has BACKSTAGE PASS APRIL/MAY

By Wendell Barnes

risen to the challenge and now his third challenge, but not a strike, is the sheer number of his cast - 71! Problems are magnified when you have more people involved, such as actors missing rehearsals due to conflicts, the weather or illness, and then having to catch them up. In addition, one of the original leads had to be replaced because she got a new job out of town and could no longer participate in the show, but even this obstacle has been overcome, and Don says his greatest joy has been working with this wonderful, cooperative cast, and especially his first-time-but-outstanding, highly organized producer, Allison Cox Dolbeer. Also assisting Don in this production is the musical director and conductor, returning to RLT once again, Bill King. Bill was the musical director and conductor the last time RLT did this show - in 1993. Usual Musical Director and Conductor James Willis is taking a bit of a break from his duties, but is still going to be playing keyboards in the pit for the show, and is doing some musical rehearsals, along with regular rehearsal pianist Donna Hester. Alisha Abrams is the choreographer, and Don is especially excited about including the original dance number, “The Jitterbug,” which was filmed but cut from the original movie (to make the entire movie shorter, only 1 hour and 40 minutes long.) He is also excited to see some of the special effects required by the script that he and the cast and crew have come up with, such as the melting of the Wicked Witch of the West and the appearance of Aunt Em in the witch’s crystal ball.

With Mary Ortwein, RLT Office Manager Looking Back… As we approach the end of our 30th season in the Historic DeSoto Theatre, I find myself thinking of RLT friends who have shared my 15 years here, but for various reasons aren’t involved these days. I’m sure you all have your own list of names, but here’s a small part of mine (in no order at all): Jean Gates, Abby Snyder, Teddi Dunham, Jane McDonald, Dana Williams, Debby Brown, Sydney Guy Johnston, Wendell Ellison, Bart McGullion, Mary Doster, Wanda Jones, Marlene Millard, Don Briscar, Cecelia and Stan Dawson, Jeffrey Self, Katherine Magruder, Christie Boyd, Charlene Bowen, Mary and Tommy Deese… Just to let you know, RLT’s” Ghost Light” (a single, solitary light bulb) is kept onstage at the DeSoto during the night, in a theater tradition that goes wa-a-a-ay back in time, to remember and honor all the people who have been a part of our RLT family.) It also keeps Tiff from tripping over assorted set pieces/props on the stage in the dark!! Our Reading Committee is continuing to read scripts and make decisions on which plays to recommend for the 2014 -2015 season. They will present their list to the RLT Board in April. Our 2013 -2014 directors and producers have been approved, so now you can start looking for the audition dates for next season’s shows.

Condolences go out to the families of Kathleen Tolbert and Rebecca Russell, two longtime members of RLT, who passed away recently. Congratulations to Sam Bryant on using his voice and theatre experience to win first place in Floyd County Schools Gifted Oratorical Contest. This year’s topic was “Why my voice is important” and Sam’s speech can be viewed on YouTube. Renovations out front (gallery and 2 office areas) should begin in April, if all goes according to plans. Then new seating will come in the summer. It looks like we’re in for lots of building improvements that will benefit RLT and others who perform here. As a Medallion level supporter of HDTF, RLT is entitled to 10 comp tickets for the Mark Robinson Show on April 26. They will be given out, first-come, first-serve, so please let the office know if you would like to receive some of them. The 2013 Gala Committee has been meeting to make plans for our annual celebration. Information about the event will be sent in early June. At the Gala we’ll present our Roman Awards and hear what shows will be presented in 2014 -2015. The Board of Directors for next season will be announced, too. «

See you at the theatre!

Now that you have been reminded that “There’s no place like home” after your sixth time laughing, crying and being scared in Kansas and Oz, now it’s time to find out that there is a lot of other theatre going on outside home, all over the place “Beyond the RLT!” So click your heels three times and let’s explore all of the wonderful opportunities nearby! Shorter University will be offering their final production of the school year, “Dancing at Lughnasa,” in the Callaway Theatre for a brief run April 9th-13th. Brian Friel’s tender memory play of a poor family in 1936 Ireland is funny and sad, and is sure to tear at your heart strings. Remember that there will only be five performances in this small theatre, so call now for reservations so you won’t miss it at 706-233-7288. The Berry College Theatre Company will also be presenting their final production of this season, Shakespeare’s most-oftenproduced comedy, the delightful “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” just in time to get your head ready for summer! The show will run on two weekends, April 18th-28th, so call the BCTC at 706236-2263 to reserve your spot for this fun experience in the beautiful B.F. Young Theatre at Berry with RLT friends Richard and Alice Bristow on the faculty. Only a short 30 minute drive away, I am proud to announce the production of “Southern Hospitality,” the hilarious comedy by my new favorite writing team of Jones, Hope and Wooten, at Calhoun Little Theatre in the Harris Arts Center on Wall Street. I am directing the craziness, and we have had so much fun putting this show together for you. Several RLT veterans are in the cast: Donna Riordan, Kevin Morang, Don Schlitz, Daniel Murchland, Justin Storey and Patty Shaw, joined by others from Calhoun and Cartersville. The show is a further adventure of the Futrelle family of Fayro, Texas, this time as they try to put on a Fayro Days Festival to attract new business to their dying community. The show will only run for four performances April 11th-13th at 7:00 and April 14th at 3:00. For tickets, call 706629-2599. Don’t miss this laugh riot! Next up the end of May at CLT is a compilation of Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s music called “A Grand Night for Singing,” and you won’t want to miss this one either. More information in the next newsletter. In nearby Cartersville, the Pumphouse Players are going strong as always at the Legion Theatre. The next production is “Play On!”, a hilarious comedy about a theatre group trying to put on a play despite interference from the author. This show will run April 19th-27th. Opening the end of May will be Steve Martin’s acclaimed comedy, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” and more information will be available in the next newsletter. Tickets for PHP and more information can be found at http://www.pumphouseplayers.com. After assessing the local scene, next up are theatres in the metro area a little further beyond the RLT. As always, the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Peachtree Street is hosting a plethora of productions for a colorful spring. Hope you didn’t miss the first national tour of “Million Dollar Quarter,” which is just closed in New York after winning Tonys on Broadway and then finding a new life off-Broadway! This unique show endedits run at the Fox March 17th. Next up is the tour again of Disney’s “Mary Poppins,” running April 2nd-7th. This show just closed on Broadway after a number of years, and many have said it is the greatest musical they have ever seen, especially when Mary flies out over the audience at the end! Mike Tyson will make a

BACKSTAGE PASS APRIL/MAY 2013

one night appearance live on stage in his recent Broadway outing, “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth” on April 20th, and “Celtic Woman” will also be onstage for one night only in concert on April 30th. And another show which just left Broadway is going on its first national tour, the musical version of “Sister Act,” which opened at the Alliance Theatre several years ago, and I can’t wait to see it again! This show will run April 23rd-28th. For more information about any of these shows, go to http://www.foxtheatre.org. The Alliance Theatre season is also winding down, and running now through April 7th is a new play that has generated a lot of buzz, “The Whipping Man,” about a Jewish Confederate soldier who returns home to Virginia just after the Civil War to find his former slaves freed and his world turned upside down. This touching play is not to be missed on the Hertz Stage downstairs at the Memorial Arts Center on Peachtree. And the Alliance is closing their season on the Alliance Stage with a swashbuckling new musical, “Zorro,” with music by Gipsy Kings. This show took Europe and London by storm, and will run April 3rd-May 5th for a fitting season finale. More information about either of these shows can be found at http://www.alliancetheatre.org. Also in the theatre neighborhood on Peachtree is the wonderful New American Shakespeare Tavern, which is playing one of the Bard’s most delightful comedies, “Much Ado About Nothing” through March 30th, to be followed by the classic tragedy “Julius Caesar” April 4th-28th. May and June brings an exciting event to the Tavern: “Hamlet” and Tom Stoppard’s “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” will be running in repertory May 2nd-June 23rd, and more information about that will follow in the next newsletter. Remember you can eat and enjoy beverages while taking in the Bard. You can also get details and buy tickets at http://www.shakespearetavern.com. The Theatrical Outfit at the Balzer Theatre on Luckie Street downtown will be closing out their season with a new musical, “The Fabulous Lipitones,” about a barbershop quartet who loses a tenor at the last minute and is forced to replace him with a Pakistani Sikh! This show has a stellar cast and will run at the Balzer March 27th-April 21st. More information can be found at http://www.theatricaloutfit.org. The always innovative Horizon Theatre at Little Five Points on Euclid Avenue just closed their extended and second run of “The Waffle Palace: Scattered, Smothered and Covered, 24/7/365,” and they are now preparing their next play, “The Book Club Play,” a comedy about a housewife who lives for her book club. The new show will run May 17th-June 23rd. More information can be found at http://www.horizontheatre.com. True Colors Theatre Company is dark for a few months, but will be presenting a new musical at the 14th Street Playhouse this summer. Information about that will be covered in the next newsletter. A little closer to us north of Atlanta in Marietta, the Atlanta Lyric Theatre is preparing their next production, the megahit musical “Ragtime,” to run April 12th-28th. Reba, Trip and I saw the original cast of this show pre-Broadway in Los Angeles, and we have never forgotten it. Can’t wait to see it again. They will close out their season this summer with a production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” and I will cover that in the next article. More information is at http://www.atlantalyrictheatre.com. Also in Marietta, the beautiful Cobb Energy Centre just off I-75 just closed “Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show” and right now there are no other Broadway style shows on the way. But Atlanta Ballet will be presenting their new production of “Carmina Burana” April 12th-14th, (Continued on page 6)

Spotlight on Shows (Continued from page 1)

You’ll have to come see the show to be amazed by how these work! As usual, many family groups are participating at RLT, one of the strengths of our community theatre. Obviously, many parents get involved when so many children are cast, and these parents have been a blessing not only transporting their actors to rehearsal, but also working backstage and even coming up with props! Three of the leads, the Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow, also have children in the production, and there is another mother-daughter pair. There are at least two sets of sisters. And one family has three generations in the cast! Don is also looking forward to the four sold-out school shows, which will be shortened only by a narration of the first scenes but will still include Dorothy’s iconic song, “Over the Rainbow.” And he wanted to remind the audiences that not only have the dates been changed, but so have the regular RLT performances due to opening on Easter weekend: there will be a matinee and an evening performance on Saturday, March 30th and no Sunday matinee on Easter Sunday, March 31st. The regular Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday matinee performances will be held the second weekend, April 5th-7th. I asked Don what he thinks the moral of the story is, and what he would like for the audiences to take away from the viewing of the show. He said he thinks that it is summed up in Dorothy’s last line, “There’s no place like home,” meaning of course that it is important for children to realize that parents are disciplining and teaching their children out of love and not to create conflict or pressure on them. Speaking from experience as someone who has directed this show before (Darlington School in 2006), I agree with Don’s assessment of this timeless story giving us life lessons we will never forget. You are sure to say “Ahhh…” after you have traveled with the RLT company to Don’s interpretation of “…Oz!” «

Beyond the RLT and coming up soon is the Atlanta Opera production of one of the funniest operas I have ever seen, Rossini’s “L’italiana di Algeri” (or “The Italian Girl in Algiers”) April 27th and 30th and May 3rd and 5th. This will be sung in Italian with English Operatitles. Atlanta Ballet will close out their season May 10th-12th with “Love Stories.” More information about these amazing productions can be found at http://www.cobbenergycentre.org. Going east, the fabulous Aurora Theatre in downtown Lawrenceville is presenting the funniest musical I ever saw on Broadway, the hilarious “The Drowsy Chaperone,” now through April 14th. The play is the story of a man who puts his favorite cast album LP on his turntable and suddenly the musical bursts to life in his living room! You do not want to miss this most entertaining show! They will close their season with “Lark Eden,” a new humorous play set in the smallest of Georgia’s towns that traces the lives of three life-long friends. “Lark Eden will run May 2nd-26th. For more information on these shows, go to http://www.auroratheatre.com. Remember that you can find out about even more opportunities in the metropolitan Atlanta area at http://www.atlantaperforms.com, and even snag some discount tickets through their Atlantix program! Going a little further into northeast Georgia and just a little over two hours away, the Holly Theater in Dahlonega is back in operation with a full season, and first up is Lerner and Lowe’s magical and romantic musical fantasy, “Brigadoon,” which will run April 5th-21st. They have an exciting season lined up. Their website is http://www.hollytheater.com, and don’t forget to spell “theater” this way instead of the usual British way! The Gainesville Theatre Alliance in northeast Georgia is gearing up for their final production at the Ed Cabell Theatre on the UNG-Gainesville campus in Oakwood, Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” April 9th-20th. The company will also be on the road presenting the breakneck small cast (and hysterical!) version of “Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps” at the new Sylvia Beard

Theatre in Buford April 5th-14th. Tickets and information about both of these shows are available at http://www.gainesvilletheatrealliance.org. And as always my tour of “Beyond the RLT” would not be complete without a shout out to two of our favorite out of state venues. The first is the Greenville Little Theatre, and although we spent a night in that beautiful city this month, unfortunately there was not any theatre onstage anywhere in town! (But we did see a glorious production of “Oliver!” in Virginia Beach the next day!) The final show of the GLT season is a comedy set in 1970 called “Elvis Has Left the Building,” which is about Col. Tom Parker’s search for the King for a very important concert. This show will run April 5th-20th (seems like I’ve heard these dates before somewhere! :)) Their annual summer musical this year will be Irving Berlin’s best, “Annie Get Your Gun,” which will open Memorial Day weekend. I’ll cover that in the next newsletter, but you can go to http://www.greenvillelittletheatre.org for tickets and more information. Which brings us to the exciting news at our favorite weekend getaway, the Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, TN, a mere 3 ½ hours away. It’s a great long weekend place to go, where you can possible squeeze in as many as four different shows in two days! Currently running at CCP are: their opening production of “Steel Magnolias,” now through March 29th and “Les Miserables” now through May 3rd. Opening April 5th and running through May 17th is William Gibson’s classic drama about Helen Keller’s early education, “The Miracle Worker.” And before the next newsletter, they will open Dolly Parton’s Broadway hit, “9 to 5, the Musical” running through July 14th. May 24th-August 2nd will see their 20th anniversary production of the hit musical, “Smoke on the Mountain.” Plan a theatre weekend at http://www.ccplayhouse.com. So that’s a little taste of what lies beyond Emerald City, Kansas and RLT! Thanks for supporting live theatre at RLT, and Beyond! « ROME LITTLE THEATRE/HISTORIC DESOTO THEATRE FOUNDATION
