Welcome Medway Community Healthcare has offered training for schools, children’s centres and preschools for many years. Our training is recognised to be informative and practical and delegates always leave courses with strategies which can be implemented immediately in their settings.

We offer expert advice regarding the neurological development of children understanding the importance of how a delay in one area can impact upon a child’s ability to learn and to interact socially.

All courses are age-specific and are grouped as pre-school, primary and secondary. Our course leaders have a wealth of professional experience and knowledge and all work for the NHS offering treatment to children in all education settings.

The prices for our courses start from ÂŁ120 per delegate for a six hour session. This price includes standard training materials. Hot and cold drinks are available throughout the day. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch.

All training is provided in our purpose-built training rooms which are suitable for practical and group work.

Elklan training Speech and language support for under fives What is it?

Elklan was founded by two experienced speech and language therapists with the aim of providing education staff with the knowledge and skills to support children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). The content of the course is applicable for staff working with all pre-school children, especially those with SLCN.

Who is it for?

Practitioners working in early years settings, such as pre-schools, nurseries (including private and voluntary), Children’s Centres and child-minders. The course is aimed at working with 3-5s, however it also highly relevant to those working with children with significant SLCN in primary school years.

Course outcomes: -

Builds your confidence, skills and knowledge in supporting speech, language and communication development.

Provides you with practical advice and strategies for working with children and their carers.

Extends your skills to apply your learning of communication and language development to the EYFS. Gives ideas for working with children with additional languages and SLCN.

What will learners receive?

All learners will receive full training materials.

How is it delivered?

The course is designed to be delivered as a 3-day programme over three months. The course uses interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos and group discussion to engage delegates. Delegates will be required to attend all 3 days.

All 3 days need to be attended by the same delegate.

Help with handwriting course Course details This course will be delivered by occupational therapists who have worked extensively with children and young people with developmental co-ordination disorders and general motor difficulties, including handwriting.

As part of the session, we will deliver experimental/practical workshops to help understand how it feels to have motor-coordination and subsequent handwriting difficulties. Help with handwriting outlines the underlying components that contribute to handwriting, difficulties and raises awareness of strategies that can be implemented with the school environment.

Who should attend?

This course is for staff working in a primary school setting – aimed at SENCo’s, TA’s and teachers.

Course aims: Help with handwriting is a fun, dynamic and interactive one-day course. In order to be able to write, children need to have good postural control, be able to cross their body midline, have hand strength and dexterity, visual motor integration, visual perception and ocular motor control. The training will give you a greater understanding of these underlying skills and how they impact on handwriting and other fine motor skills.

The course delegate will leave with a toolbox of practical skills and knowledge to support school staff in implementing motor skills and handwriting strategies within school, including:-

“Why can’t I sit still and learn?”

Sensory motor training Course details This course will be delivered by occupational therapists who have worked extensively with children and young people with developmental co-ordination disorders and sensory needs.

We will deliver experiential workshops to help understand how it feels to have sensory/motor difficulties. We will teach strategies for school staff to enable children to learn. Why can’t I sit still and learn? raises awareness about the importance of movement and play in the everyday lives of our children at home and at school. This will be related to sensory and motor deficits that can impact on everyday tasks such as attention and learning. The escalating use of technology for play has resulted in children who find it difficult to pay attention and learn in the classroom environment. This course gives practical solutions.

Course aims This course is for staff working in a primary school setting – aimed at SENCO’s, TA’s, and teachers.

Course leaders will provide an overview of the link between sensory processing and how this affects a child’s ability to access their learning opportunities in school.

This is a fun, dynamic and interactive day that includes practical activities.

The course will provide a basic understanding of how sensory processing impacts on a child’s ability to concentrate and regulate behaviours that have an underlying sensory origin for example, some children find it very difficult to sit still and need to be able to move to concentrate.

Delegates will leave with a toolbox of practical skills and knowledge to support school staff in implementing sensory approaches within school, including:  Strategies to use in the classroom to help improve learning skills  An understanding of how a child with sensory processing difficulties might feel in the classroom and school environment and impact this has on socialising and learning.  Suggestions of different ways of adapting the classroom and teaching to facilitate inclusive access to the curriculum

Helping children with autistic spectrum disorder inprimary schools to communicate Supporting children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and social communication disorder in primary school to interact and learn

Course details This course is suitable for any school staff members that work with children who present with a social communication disorder with a special reference to autistic spectrum difficulties. The focus will be on the pupil’s ability to communicate and understand the world.

Key learning outcomes:   

Understand what ASD and social communication disorder is and the difference between the two terms and how this affects learning and social development Exploring the difficulties experienced by pupils and how these may manifest as different behaviours.

In depth understanding how key traits such as ; creativity, conversational skills, social Interaction, nonverbal skills, sensory difficulties and anxiety effect pupils in the classroom.

How to set up and run social skills groups and other specific strategies that can be deployed such as role play, social stories and the use of non-literal language.

How is it delivered?

The course is an intensive one day programme that uses practical information and strategies so that learners can take away ideas and start implementation in the classroom immediately.

Cost: ÂŁ120 for one day

The day is fun and interactive giving learners opportunity to experience the world through different thought processes. Practical examples will help give context to the course and a variety of tools will be available for use throughout the course.

Introduction to speech sound development and cued articulation Course details      

This course is suitable for teachers and teaching assistants who work with children who present with speech sound difficulties.

Course leaders will cover strategies to support speech sound production and also how to implement speech sound targets within the educational setting.

Developed to help children who find it difficult to develop speech sounds without support.

Provides specific targeted interventions.

Cued articulation is a visual system which uses simple hand cues to show where and how speech sounds are made.

Particularly beneficial for children with pronunciation difficulties and those with english as an additional language.

Course aims Learners will be able to:    

Produce all cued articulation consonant hand signs.

Produce basic vowel signs.

Understand the hierarchy when working on speech sounds.

Feel confident to interpret and work on a speech sound target.

Become familiar with strategies to elicit speech sounds in isolation and how and when to develop these sounds into words development.

How is it delivered?

The course is delivered as an intensive one day programme and uses interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos, and group discussion to engage learners.

It will introduce learners to the cued articulation approach and support them to become familiar with all cues for consonant sounds.

Training will also introduce learners to the typical and atypical processes of speech sound development.

Learners will become familiar with strategies to support speech sound production in an engaging way.

Helping children with autistic spectrum disorder in secondary schools to communicate Supporting children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and social communication disorder in secondary schools to interact and learn Course details This course is suitable for any school staff members that work with children who present with a social communication disorder with a special reference to autistic spectrum difficulties. The focus will be on the pupils ability to communicate and understand the world. A large element of this course will enable learners to put in place strategies and programmes to help young people with autism cope not only with the academic environment such as changes to timetables and transition between lessons but also helping prepare for work experience, interviews and exam preparation.

Boosting childrens’ understanding of language Elklan - early years based information carrying words Do you work with children known to speech and language therapy? Do you regularly see targets on reports which talk about “information carrying words”, “word levels”, and “receptive language”? Do you often wonder what this means and how it relates to the children in your setting? If so, the Elklan EYBIC course for you!

What is it?

This course uses Elklan EYBIC (early years based information carrying words) to improve your knowledge and skills in supporting children’s understanding of spoken language in the educational setting.

It provides a structured framework to use with children to develop the amount of information they can remember in instructions. EYBIC will also support the child’s development of everyday vocabulary, including topics such as food, clothing, home and animals. This vocabulary links to the main areas of development expected in the EYFS curriculum.

Who is it for?

The vocabulary used in the course is based on the EYFS; however the principles are applicable for working with children of all ages with or without language and communication needs.

Course outcomes: - You will learn the typical stages of language development, which will help you identify which children need further support.

- Build your confidence, skills and knowledge in supporting children’s language development.

- Provides you with practical examples of activities that you can use in your setting to support language skills.

- You will have the skills to apply your learning of communication and language development to the EYFS.

An osprey training course Occupational therapy Speech and language therapy Physiotherapy Reaching Early Years Course details The teaching material will focus on the EYFS three prime areas of learning; communication, physical and personal and social emotional development and explore in depth how difficulties in movement and communication impact upon the child’s ability to access literacy and mathematics.

Course aims This course is aimed at supporting staff in pre-school establishments, children’s centres and private, voluntary and independent settings to maximise children’s ability to prepare for school entry.

The course brings together key skills from physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy to enable delegates to deliver strategies to help all areas of a child’s development.
