Information

Welcome Medway Community Healthcare has offered training for schools, children’s centres and preschools for many years. Our training is recognised to be informative and practical and delegates always leave courses with strategies which can be implemented immediately in their settings.

We offer expert advice regarding the neurological development of children understanding the importance of how a delay in one area can impact upon a child’s ability to learn and to interact socially.

All courses are age-specific and are grouped as pre-school, primary and secondary. Our course leaders have a wealth of professional experience and knowledge and all work for the NHS offering treatment to children in all education settings.

FOR MEDWAY SCHOOLS There is a change this year to the way we are delivering our courses in line with the launch of the Medway School Core StandardsHopscotch Bronze level.

MCH have formulated a set of aspirational standards that schools are encouraged to work towards so that they become experts in understanding their pupil’s needs. This resource is levelled as a Bronze Standard and is accompanied by a full days training offered free of charge. Please refer to Hopscotch training on page 3.

The Bronze award is presented after completion of the training and a self-audit on progress made to develop a fully inclusive school. The award is offered for a full year but to maintain the Bronze level schools are expected to repeat the one day’s free training and self audit each year.

Any school outside of the Medway area can access all levels of training and be awarded a school certificate but the Bronze level course has an attached fee.

Introduction to Silver Level The Silver standard is gained by schools participating in an additional two one day training courses that build on the knowledge gained at Bronze level in defined areas specified in the training programme.

Introduction to Gold Level. The Gold level standard is gained by schools participating in a further two one day training courses that build on the knowledge gained at Bronze and Silver level in defined areas specified in the training programme. The Gold level is given for one year but can be held for a further year after completion of a self-audit providing the school participate in the on-going Bronze level support.

If your setting/school book on to 2 courses at the same time you will receive 5% discount and for 4 courses a 10% discount will be awarded (before December 2019)

Hopscotch course A practical guide for staff in all schools to help children to develop essential skills for learning addressing:  

Sensory processing difficulties Movement Social and communication skills

 

Hand overhand activities to help support children with these difficulties Information regarding small aids.

The ability to attend, focus, concentrate and participate in school is reliant upon development of the: Sensory systems (how we experience our environment through our senses)  Motor system (how we move our bodies to perform a particular task)  Language and communication skills.  Traditionally, physiotherapy delivered strategies for motor difficulties, occupational therapy delivered strategies for sensory and fine motor difficulties and speech and language therapists delivered strategies for language and communication skills.

Ideally all three areas of therapeutic intervention should be combined within one programme of activities.

We know that: Children who live in areas of social disadvantages are 50% more likely to have a language delay which impacts on their ability to learn.  Poor gross motor ability can lead to issues around concentration.

All areas of the brain are involved with learning and teachers help pupils access learning at a higher cognitive level. To enable the brain to learn, the sensory motor and communication areas must be well developed and be able to work at a subconscious level. Occupational therapists and Speech and Language Therapists work together with children to help develop functional skills to enable successful learning.

Our Occupational Therapists have enhanced skills in sensory and motor training, so they know how simple physical adjustments can make all the difference to a child’s success.

Our Speech and Language therapists are able to help with communication difficulties that impact on a child’s ability to fully achieve at school.

Mathematics and problem solving

For example, smooth eye movements require motor skills to allow a flow of sequential information to the brain. Likewise the child is required to combine individual sounds to make the words using good motor skills.

Writing requires visual and motor skills to put pen to paper.

Senco’s We will advise SENCO’s in the applications for EHCP and offer whole school approach to inclusion.

Teaching Assistants (TA) We will train TA’s to deliver interventions as part of daily school life minimising disruption to the school timetable.

Pupils We will support pupils to achieve and to enable them to assess the whole school day.

Parents We will give the parents “My Plans” and offer advice, drop in sessions and signpost to formal parent education workshops.

We understand that coming into school/nursery and transitioning between activities can be some of the most challenging times for children.

Medway Mazes is a sensory motor scheme which will assist with pupil’s concentration and participation levels. These Mazes offer an integrated movement break as children move around the school. It enables them to reach a calm alert state, allowing them to listen, attend and learn.

Who should attend?

Pre-school and school staff.

Course aims The aims of this one day study are for learners to:  Understand the purpose of Medway Mazes.  How it benefits learning.  How to set up a maze in your setting.  How to adapt the mazes to meet the needs of your students.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Autism spectrum disorder is the name used for a specific set of behavioural and developmental problems and the challenges that go with them. A diagnosis of ASD means that your child's communication, social, and play skills are affected in some way.

ASD is a lifelong condition that affects around 1 in 100 people in the UK. It impacts communication, relationships with other and making sense of the world around them.

Introduction to speech sound development and cued articulation Course details This course is suitable for Teachers and Teaching Assistants who work with children who present with speech sound difficulties.

Course Leaders will cover strategies to support speech sound production and also how to implement speech sound targets within the educational setting.

Designed to be used with children with speech and language problems. It is a visual aid to learning sounds and helping literacy. A group of hand movements which teach individual sounds in a word.

The sytem uses simple hand cues to show where and how speech sounds are produced.

Provides specific targeted interventionsed articulation is a visual system which uses simple hand cues to show where and how speech sounds are made.

Particularly beneficial for children with pronunciation difficulties and those with English as an additional language.

Course aims      

Learners will be able to:Produce all cued articulation consonant hand signs.

Produce basic vowel signs.

Understand the hierarchy when working on speech sounds.

Feel confident to interpret and work on a speech sound target.

Become familiar with strategies to elicit speech sounds in isolation and how and when to develop these sounds into word development.

This one day course explores how you can help children reduce stress and anxiety, how to understand their behaviour, and how to support them during difficult times.

Elklan training Speech and language support for (pre-school) What is it?

Elklan was founded by two experienced speech and language therapists with the aim of providing education staff with the knowledge and skills to support children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). The content of the course is applicable for staff working with all pre-school children, especially those with SLCN.

Who is it for?

Practitioners working in early years setting such as preschools, nurseries (including private and voluntary), children’s centres and child minders. This course is aimed at working with 3 – 5’s however it also highly relevant to those working with children with significant SLCN in primary school years.

Course Outcomes: 

Builds your confidence, skills and knowledge in supporting speech, language and communication development.

Provides you with practical advice and strategies for working with children and their carers.

Extends your skills to apply your learning of communication and language development to the EYFS. Gives ideas for working with children with additional languages and SLCN.

Big Builders Big Builders is a 5 week activity group for children who are struggling to keep up with their developmental levels. Some children, take longer to acquire core skills, others find themselves lacking in experiencing certain environments. Big Builders is a fun group approach to helping children experience and improve on a range of skills including activities of daily living, communication and gross motor skills. The programme is written by a PT, OT and SLT to ensure that every game and activity uses all three disciplines together. We know that working on all these skills at the same time has a positive effect for example, you need to move around to gain language and therefore we may suggest a sensory, physical circuit whilst following instruction.

Example of one activity in week 1:Attention and listening:Ready steady Go Game - aim is to:* Encourage good looking skills. * Promote good waiting. * Improve motor planning. * Develop hand eye coordination Each child takes it in turn to choose an animal bean bag. The adult will then say “ready steady” and then wait for the child to look in their direction before saying “go”.

Encourage the child to aim for a big box. Watch their posture. Do they overbalance?

From this simple activity staff can start to assess the child’s understanding, alertness and physical ability. Each week builds on new skills to ensure children progress.

Gesture to support language development What is it?

Do you work with children with speech, language and communication needs? Would you like to increase your knowledge in being able to support their understanding and communication in your setting? If so, this is the course for you.

By the end of the course, you will have a basic signing vocabulary, based on functional language over a range of categories such as; family, food, clothes and transport.

You will then be able to use the signs with children who may have language difficulties, hearing impairment or learning difficulties. We will also cover useful tips for supporting children's understanding, terminology such as "key words", "information carrying words" and "receptive language" and giving you chance practice activities using the Elklan EYBIC (Early Years Based Information Carrying Words) framework.

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for practitioners working within the foundation stage and/or with children with speech, language and communication needs. This may include nursery staff, SENCos, TAs and teachers.

How is it delivered?

An intensive full day programme that uses interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos and group discussion to engage learners.
