Information

Welcome Medway Community Healthcare has offered training for schools, children’s centres and preschools for many years. Our training is recognised to be informative and practical and delegates always leave courses with strategies which can be implemented immediately in their settings.

We offer expert advice regarding the neurological development of children understanding the importance of how a delay in one area can impact upon a child’s ability to learn and to interact socially.

All courses are age-specific and are grouped as pre-school, primary and secondary. Our course leaders have a wealth of professional experience and knowledge and all work for the NHS offering treatment to children in all education settings.

How to find us

The prices for our courses start from £60 per delegate. This price includes standard training materials. Hot and cold drinks are available throughout the day. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch.

Traded services MCH is the provider of all NHS Community Child Health Services in Medway.

MCH+

is our traded service for schools to buy additional Occupational and Speech and Language Therapy for pupils that do not meet the NHS criteria.

We know that: Children who live in areas of social disadvantages are 50% more likely to have a language delay which impacts on their ability to learn.  Poor gross motor ability can lead to issues around concentration.

School can directly commission MCH+ We offer full day packages of care to schools and academies as well as one off assessments.

We offer communication with a specialist team, designed to provide a bespoke package of your choice, specifically for your school.

For example, packages may include:     

classroom observations to help improve the learning experience of the child.

1:1 assessments and interventions. attendance at parents evening and access to parent education. collaborative working with teachers to enable effective differentiation to deliver lessons and IEP’s.

Elklan training Speech and language support for under fives

The course uses interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos and group discussion to engage learners. All 3 days need to be attended by the same delegate as this is a licensed ELKLAN certified training course.

ADHD training course Course details Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a group of behavioural symptoms that includes in attentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

Estimates suggest if affects around 2-5% of school-aged children although there continues to be controversy on why the numbers of diagnosed children are increasing at such a high rate.

Who should attend?

The course will be suitable for all school staff and will be delivered using taught information, video clips, group question and answer sessions and practical demonstrations.

Boosting childrens’ understanding of language Elklan - Early Years Based Information Carrying Words Do you work with children known to Speech and Language Therapy? Do you regularly see targets on reports which talk about “information carrying words”, “word levels”, and “receptive language”? Do you often wonder what this means and how it relates to the children in your setting? If so, the Elklan EYBIC course for you!

What is it?

This course uses Elklan EYBIC (Early Years Based Information Carrying Words) to improve your knowledge and skills in supporting children’s understanding of spoken language in the educational setting.

It provides a structured framework to use with children to develop the amount of information they can remember in instructions. EYBIC will also support the child’s development of everyday vocabulary, including topics such as food, clothing, home and animals. This vocabulary links to the main areas of development expected in the EYFS curriculum.

Who is it for?

The vocabulary used in the course is based on the EYFS; however the principles are applicable for working with children of all ages with or without language and communication needs.

Course Outcomes:  You will learn the typical stages of language development, which will help you identify which children need further support.  Build your confidence, skills and knowledge in supporting children’s language development.  Provides you with practical examples of activities that you can use in your setting to support language skills.

Free school support surgeries

Hopscotch course A practical guide for staff in all schools to help children to develop essential skills for learning addressing:-

MCH are providing the opportunity for your school to send a representative to this free support for TA’s, teachers and SENCO’s working with children known to the Children’s service.

Each surgery will last 3 hours. There are up to 25 places on each session. We are operating this on a first come first served basis. The session will run as follows:First 2 hours;  Each school will bring questions / case studies of children they are working with for discussion with the children’s service team.  All participants will decide together which case studies / questions they wish to work on in that session.  Therapists will be available to talk through solutions and options to help schools provide the best action plan and environment or ways to help your children in school Last hour: There will be an option decided by the participants as to whether they wish to continue to talk around more cases or therapists to demonstrate different strategies / intervention techniques.

Through the session, resources will be available to look at and therapist on hand to discuss best practise.

Sensory processing difficulties Movement Social and communication skills

All children learn in different ways and develop at different rates.

The ability to attend, focus, concentrate and participate in school is reliant upon development of the:  Sensory systems (how we experience our environment through our senses)  Motor system (how we move our bodies to perform a particular task)  Language and communication skills  Traditionally, physiotherapy delivered strategies for motor difficulties, occupational therapy delivered strategies for sensory and fine motor difficulties and speech and language therapists delivered strategies for language and communication skills. Ideally all three areas of therapeutic intervention should be combined within one programme of activities.

This course gives practical information for all members of teaching staff to identify children with specific areas of difficulty, together with strategies to address their needs.

Help with handwriting course Course details This course will be delivered by Occupational Therapists who have worked extensively with children and young people with developmental co-ordination disorders and general motor difficulties, including handwriting.

As part of the session, we will deliver experimential/practical workshops to help understand how it feels to have motor-co-ordination and subsequent handwriting difficulties. Help with handwriting outlines the underlying components that contribute to handwriting, difficulties and raises awareness of strategies that can be implemented with the school environment.

Course aims: Help with handwriting is a fun, dynamic and interactive one-day course. In order to be able to write, children need to have good postural control, be able to cross their body midline, have hand strength and dexterity, visual motor integration, visual perception and ocular motor control.

The training will give you a greater understanding of these underlying skills and how they impact on handwriting and other fine motor skills.

Trainers will suggest different ways of adapting the classroom and teaching styles to ensure inclusive access to the curriculum.

To give staff the skills and knowledge to be able to use simple/basic signing with young children. The signs taught cover functional language over a range of categories such as; family, food, clothes and transport.

Staff will then be able to use the signs to children who may have language difficulties, hearing impairment or learning difficulties. The signs are taught alongside spoken language so that all children in the setting can benefit from learning some signs. Children who have some signing skills can then better communicate with their peers and staff alike.

Course aims

How is it delivered?

The course delegate will leave with a toolbox of practical skills and knowledge to support school staff in implementing motor skills and handwriting strategies Within school, including: Practical activies to help understand how it feels to have handwriting difficulties.  Strategies for the school and classroom to support children with these difficulties.  Information regarding small aids (such as pencil grips) and when to try them.

This course is for practitioners working within the foundation stage and key stage one, such as preschools, nurseries (including private and voluntary), childrens centre and child minders. This course is aimed at staff working with 3- 5s – aimed at SENCo’s, TA’s and teachers.

Course aims: Help with handwriting is a fun, dynamic and interactive one-day course. In order to be able to write, children need to have good postural control, be able to cross their body midline, have hand strength and dexterity, visual motor integration, visual perception and ocular motor control.

The training will give you a greater understanding of these underlying skills and how they impact on handwriting and other fine motor skills.

Trainers will suggest different ways of adapting the classroom and teaching styles to ensure inclusive access to the curriculum.

To give staff the skills and knowledge to be able to use simple/basic signing with young children. The signs taught cover functional language over a range of categories such as; family, food, clothes and transport.

Staff will then be able to use the signs to children who may have language difficulties, hearing impairment or learning difficulties. The signs are taught alongside spoken language so that all children in the setting can benefit from learning some signs. Children who have some signing skills can then better communicate with their peers and staff alike.

How is it delivered?

An intensive half day programme, using interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos and group discussion to engage learners.

Free school support surgeries

Hopscotch course A practical guide for staff in all schools to help children to develop essential skills for learning addressing:-

MCH are providing the opportunity for your school to send a representative to this free support for TA’s, teachers and SENCO’s working with children known to the Children’s service.

Each surgery will last 3 hours. There are up to 25 places on each session. We are operating this on a first come first served basis. The session will run as follows:First 2 hours;  Each school will bring questions / case studies of children they are working with for discussion with the children’s service team.  All participants will decide together which case studies / questions they wish to work on in that session.  Therapists will be available to talk through solutions and options to help schools provide the best action plan and environment or ways to help your children in school Last hour: There will be an option decided by the participants as to whether they wish to continue to talk around more cases or therapists to demonstrate different strategies / intervention techniques.

Through the session, resources will be available to look at and therapist on hand to discuss best practise.

Sensory processing difficulties Movement Social and communication skills

All children learn in different ways and develop at different rates.

The ability to attend, focus, concentrate and participate in school is reliant upon development of the:  Sensory systems (how we experience our environment through our senses)  Motor system (how we move our bodies to perform a particular task)  Language and communication skills  Traditionally, physiotherapy delivered strategies for motor difficulties, occupational therapy delivered strategies for sensory and fine motor difficulties and speech and language therapists delivered strategies for language and communication skills. Ideally all three areas of therapeutic intervention should be combined within one programme of activities.

This course gives practical information for all members of teaching staff to identify children with specific areas of difficulty, together with strategies to address their needs.

ADHD training course Course details Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a group of behavioural symptoms that includes in attentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

Estimates suggest if affects around 2-5% of school-aged children although there continues to be controversy on why the numbers of diagnosed children are increasing at such a high rate.

Who should attend?

The course will be suitable for all school staff and will be delivered using taught information, video clips, group question and answer sessions and practical demonstrations.

Course aims The aim of this one day study is for learners to: Understand the categories of ADHD and the presenting behavioural symptoms.  To be aware of how ADHD effects learning  To understand why medication is given  To learn how to adapt the school day and environment to accommodate needs  Develop communication strategies with children and their parents to ensure continuum of support in both school and home

Boosting childrens’ understanding of language Elklan - Early Years Based Information Carrying Words Do you work with children known to Speech and Language Therapy? Do you regularly see targets on reports which talk about “information carrying words”, “word levels”, and “receptive language”? Do you often wonder what this means and how it relates to the children in your setting? If so, the Elklan EYBIC course for you!

What is it?

This course uses Elklan EYBIC (Early Years Based Information Carrying Words) to improve your knowledge and skills in supporting children’s understanding of spoken language in the educational setting.

It provides a structured framework to use with children to develop the amount of information they can remember in instructions. EYBIC will also support the child’s development of everyday vocabulary, including topics such as food, clothing, home and animals. This vocabulary links to the main areas of development expected in the EYFS curriculum.

Who is it for?

The vocabulary used in the course is based on the EYFS; however the principles are applicable for working with children of all ages with or without language and communication needs.

Course Outcomes:  You will learn the typical stages of language development, which will help you identify which children need further support.  Build your confidence, skills and knowledge in supporting children’s language development.  Provides you with practical examples of activities that you can use in your setting to support language skills.

Traded services MCH is the provider of all NHS Community Child Health Services in Medway.

MCH+

is our traded service for schools to buy additional Occupational and Speech and Language Therapy for pupils that do not meet the NHS criteria.

We know that: Children who live in areas of social disadvantages are 50% more likely to have a language delay which impacts on their ability to learn.  Poor gross motor ability can lead to issues around concentration.

School can directly commission MCH+ We offer full day packages of care to schools and academies as well as one off assessments.

We offer communication with a specialist team, designed to provide a bespoke package of your choice, specifically for your school.

For example, packages may include:     

classroom observations to help improve the learning experience of the child.

1:1 assessments and interventions. attendance at parents evening and access to parent education. collaborative working with teachers to enable effective differentiation to deliver lessons and IEP’s.

TA coaching and support twilight training for school staff for example:-

Elklan training Speech and language support for under fives

The course uses interactive teaching methods, practical activities, videos and group discussion to engage learners. All 3 days need to be attended by the same delegate as this is a licensed ELKLAN certified training course.
