The film’s sequences and rhythm result entirely from Lehmann’s walking pace and path through fields, rivers, mountains, as well as industrial landscapes, roads and cities. If the filmmaker’s navigation seems mostly linear, constantly, smoothly, moving forward, through editing the film performs a journey across very heterogeneous places and times. Indeed, ging moves between dual elements such as nature and urbanity, land and water, empty and crowded spaces, as well as through seasons. Visual rhythm is given by the continuous vertical movement of Lehmann’s steps, while the monotonous soundtrack - partly a record of the latter - is superimposed with both musical and natural sounds. While essentially subjected to the filmmaker’s bodily movement, ging seems to suggest a quasi-autonomous, floating, gaze. Formally, the film’s sensibility is akin to Land Art and to the British Landscape film.
