Letter from the Editor When I look back on childhood memories, I remember Summer like a breath of fresh air. During Summer, the days are longer, and the sun does not set until around 8:30 p.m., extending the hours for fun. For my family, summer activities included evenings on our bikes riding throughout the neighborhood, racing each other, or discovering new paths; or fishing at the lake - – Whatever we were doing, we were having fun and enjoying the extra hours of daylight! This year, Summer takes place in the U.S. from June 20 through September 22. Several holidays take place during these months, but there is only one that fully embodies American culture. Independence Day takes place every year on July 4 and is commonly referred to as the “Fourth of July” by many Americans.

6

We celebrate Independence Day to honor the anniversary of American freedom, officiated in 1776 with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The document represented independence for the first American colonies from British rule. On this day, people often celebrate with family and friends by enjoying fireworks, parades, and barbeques. As you read through this issue of Journey magazine, I hope it gets you thinking of what Summer in the U.S. will be like for you and your family. Each of us at MedPro International is looking forward to welcoming you to the U.S. and helping bring your American Dream to life. Celebrating One Year of Your American Dream It has been over one year since the official launch of MedPro International. In that time, the MedPro International team has been an integral part of helping hundreds of people achieve their American Dream. The decision to brand MedPro International was rooted in the idea of focusing a team on placing foreign-educated healthcare professionals into the U.S. healthcare system. Part of this organizational focus included the roll-out of highly specialized programs, including Infion, a program for registered nurses, Elevate, a program for physical and occupational therapists, and Zenith, a program for medical technologists. Each program ensures that foreign-educated healthcare professionals receive comprehensive clinical education through simulation sessions to develop skills necessary for their profession. The programs also allow professionals to connect with a like-minded community of professionals during U.S. orientation and beyond. Throughout the past year, hard work and dedication propelled the organization’s growth and continue to be the foundation for success. Our quest to meet the needs of our foreign-educated healthcare

professionals remains steadfast and ingrained in MedPro International’s mission statement. In commemorating our one year milestone , Patty Jeffrey, Vice President of International Operations at MedPro International, said, “The foreign-educated healthcare professionals we work with are putting great trust in us to help them achieve their personal and professional goals. They fuel our commitment to uncompromising ethics and dedication.” Jeffrey goes on to say, “When I look towards the next ten years, I see these incredible individuals as an important element in satisfying the growing need for nurses, therapists and medical technologists here in the U.S.” Through an exciting time of growth, the MedPro International team has remained committed to helping each MedPro International Healthcare Professional achieve their American Dream. “Hard work, compassion, and relentless focus on quality healthcare will always remain at the core of our culture,” says CEO Liz Tonkin. “We are proud to work with this talented group of people and look forward to all we will accomplish together in the future.”’

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned most countries across the globe upside down. Amidst the uncertainty, there are new opportunities for change and evolution in the U.S. and global healthcare systems.

contracting COVID-19 are 20 times more likely when exposed to the virus indoors versus outdoors.

Safety Measures – Outdoor Activities

Many U.S. states are considering new restrictions to deal with any local resurgence of coronavirus. Any new measures are expected to be less restrictive than measures taken in the Spring when coronavirus first surfaced in the U.S.

Although there is still much uncertainty, what individuals do have control over is ensuring the safety of themselves and their family. Communities across the U.S. are at varying stages of managing the COVID-19 outbreak. With Summer upon us, many people are heading outside to soak in the sun, tackle yard work, and enjoy nature. In the U.S., the CDC is the authority on safety precautions. Individuals should heed the advice of their local health authorities to stay safe. Engaging in outdoor activity is safest, as open spaces inhibit the build-up of condensed, infected air–which can aggregate quickly indoors. Erin Bromage, a comparative immunologist and biology professor at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, tells The New York Times, “Outside is definitely safer, but it’s the type of interactions you have when you’re outside that is important.” A Japanese case study draws a similar conclusion to Bromage, finding the odds of 14

Testing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Health experts have reported that increased testing will be crucial to this next phase of coronavirus response. Testing will allow healthcare professionals to monitor infection trends, equip the infected with knowledge about how to limit exposure to others, and perform contact tracing to determine which individuals should potentially be isolated. According to the Chicago Tribune, last month, FEMA, a primary U.S. federal agency in charge of the COVID-19 response, distributed 74 million N95 masks and 66 million hospital-grade gloves. The

COVID-19 in the U.S. What You Need to Know

mass distribution of PPE was based on specific needs (areas deemed hot-spots) instead of population, the basis for past distributions. FEMA’s contribution of PPE makes up just a portion of all the PPE reserves in each state. The U.S. government has continued its tremendous efforts to replenish a once-diminished stockpile of PPE, with the intent to build a substantial supply to keep healthcare workers and civilians safe in future health crises. Jobs in High Demand A study conducted by The Bureau of Labor Statistics (B.L.S.) estimates the demand for nurses in the U.S. will continue to grow in the years to come. Historically, the U.S. has relied heavily on the talent of foreigneducated healthcare professionals to overcome the nursing deficit in the U.S., which it has faced for several decades. In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, hospitals across the country seek the support of foreign-educated nurses and medical technologists, now more than ever. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Nurses, Emergency Room (ER) Nurses, Telemetry/H.D.U. Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, and Medical Technologists are amongst the most needed specialties in the U.S. during this crisis.

What’s Next for the U.S.? COVID-19 has dramatically tested the U.S. healthcare system, causing us to reflect on the future of U.S. healthcare delivery. The pandemic has tasked many healthcare workers while also preparing us to be more resilient in the future. COVID-19 has spurred innovations and challenged the healthcare field in ways that experts predict will influence the healthcare landscape for the foreseeable future. Healthcare facilities continue to face a heightened need for clinicians. MedPro International’s foreigneducated healthcare professionals will play a crucial part in resolving labor shortfalls during the COVID-19 pandemic and for years to come. We are Waiting for You! Don’t Miss American Cuisine

16

The U.S. is a melting pot of cultures from around the world and you can enjoy every possible type of international cuisine. However, America is also known for its own delicious types of cuisine that tend to be big on taste and portion! Here is a rundown of some all-American cuisine:

Backyard Grill

Most U.S. citizens would argue that there is nothing more American than an old fashion cookout. American holidays like the Fourth of July, Labor Day, or Memorial Day call for friends and family to gather around and enjoy food hot off the grill. These meals typically include hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, and steak. These favorites are traditionally paired with macaroni and potato salads, pickles, corn-on-the-cob, and coleslaw.

Barbeque

Barbeque, or “BBQ” for short, is an American style of cooking meat at low temperatures over a long period of time. The most popular meats to cook in this method include pork, ribs, brisket, and chicken wings. They are traditionally smothered in barbeque sauce and cooked over an open fire or grill. The meat is shredded, chopped, or eaten off the bone and has a smoky, savory flavor that is unmistakable. Many barbeque lovers say the secret is in the sauce, which style varies in regions across the U.S., so you are encouraged to try them all and find your favorite.

Southern Cooking

If you are lucky to take an assignment in a southern state like Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, or Tennessee, you will quickly learn about their dangerously good food. Southern dishes are most common on American holidays like Thanksgiving, where baskets of cornbread and stuffing adorn most dinner tables. Other southern items you will want to try are biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits, and chicken-fried steak. We recommend these rich and hearty dishes in moderation!

Comfort Food

Many of our Explorers who take assignments in colder, northern states love to indulge in comfort food! American comfort food is everything your heart did not know it desired. A savory chicken pot pie, meatloaf, or warm bowl of macaroni and cheese is sure to warm your soul and fill your belly.

American Dessert

There is nothing more American than pies; the saying “As American as apple pie” really says it all. But there is more than one favorite pie here in the U.S. Other

classics include pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and cherry pie. If your assignment is in Florida, we recommend taking a trip to Key West to introduce your taste buds to the delicious key lime pie! Other delicious American desserts include ice cream sundaes, cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies, and chocolate brownies. 17

Meet Your MedPro International Family

MedPro International is comprised of a diverse team of employees, bringing healthcare professionals from around the globe to the U.S. to fulfill their American Dreams. In this issue of Journey Magazine, we would like to introduce you to a few people who comprise the MedPro International team.

18

Anna Carbonell, Recruitment Guide

Anna began her career in healthcare six years ago, working as a liaison for patients exploring custom mobility devices. Aspiring to work with caregivers, she joined the MedPro International team as a Recruitment Guide in 2015. She quickly became a knowledgeable team member, helping answer candidate questions and guiding them through the interview process. Anna has traveled to the Philippines, St. Lucia, Jamaica, India, England, and Barbados to interview healthcare professionals interested in expanding their careers to the U.S. “I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for the nurses I recruit. Many of them are balancing 16-hour workdays, raising a family, and still commit to studying up to 20 hours a week for the NCLEX exam,” Anna says. “They are strong-willed and committed to changing their lives and chasing their American Dream. This dedication is what drives me to stand in their corner and help them navigate the intricacies of their journey to the U.S.,” she adds.

Natalia Samuels,

Licensure & Credentialing Guide Natalia began her career with MedPro International four years ago. She plays an instrumental role in guiding MedPro International Healthcare Professionals throughout their journeys to the U.S. Her responsibilities include NCLEX preparation, test coordination, and – most importantly – making herself available to answer any questions and concerns. Natalia is a critical support system for our healthcare professionals; her passion for international recruitment is rooted in her own family’s immigration experience. “My grandmother and sister are both from Jamaica and traveled to the U.S. through an organization that connected them to U.S. employment opportunities. They eventually earned their citizenship here, and today, most of my family lives in the states,” Natalia shared. “My work with MedPro International allows me to impact people’s lives the same way my family’s lives were impacted when they immigrated to the U.S.”

Charity Capistrano,

Senior Personal Journey Guide Charity is a Senior Personal Journey Guide at MedPro International. Her sole responsibility is to help her healthcare professionals successfully navigate their personal and professional U.S. assimilation. She has been with MedPro International’s U.S. based team for six years. Charity started her international recruitment career in the Philippines, where she taught IELTS and TOEFL classes. A caretaker by nature, Charity is responsible for setting expectations through personal development plans that incorporate both professional and personal life goals. In summarizing her mission and driving beliefs, she states, “A successful U.S. career is more than just a job. That is why we believe in empowering our healthcare professionals to network, go through formal U.S. training, and plan for a healthy work/life balance.” When asked about the most rewarding aspect of her job, Charity responds: “I get to know these individuals very closely and have the ability to guide them in their professional growth.” She continues to discuss the bond she develops with her healthcare professionals: “I’m able to celebrate their success with them and help them navigate through tough moments.” As someone who immigrated to a new country with a family, Charity empathizes with her healthcare professionals. When Charity is not busy working with MedPro International Healthcare Professionals, she likes to curl up on the couch with her husband and two children watching movies. MedPro International takes pride in offering firstclass service to our healthcare professionals. We strive to provide guidance, community, and growth to each of our healthcare professionals. We look forward to meeting you.

Join in on these American Holidays A fun fact you’ll quickly learn about Americans is that we love a good reason to celebrate. There are many holidays observed throughout the year in the United States. Here are a few of our favorite holidays that we hope you enjoy while living your American Dream.

New Year True to its name, New Year is a holiday that marks the beginning of a new calendar year. The celebration begins on December 31st, known as New Year’s Eve, when friends and family gather for count-down parties where it’s tradition to drink champagne and count down the seconds to the end of one year and beginning of the New Year. It is American tradition to grab someone you love and share a kiss when the clock strikes midnight. People throw confetti, light fireworks, and clink glasses to cheers to a brand-new year. In Times 20

Square in New York City, thousands of people flood the streets to watch a ball descend 140 feet in the last 60 seconds of the year.

Valentine’s Day Celebrated on February 14th, St. Valentine’s Day is an annual holiday meant to observe both romantic and platonic relationships. The day gets its name from the Roman St. Valentine, a third-century Christian priest. During that century, soldiers were prohibited from marriage. St. Valentine arranged secret ceremonies between soldiers and their brides to be married. St. Valentine went to jail and fell in love with a correctional officer’s daughter. On February 14th, the day he was to be put to death, he wrote a love letter signing it “From your Valentine.” Today in the U.S., children exchange cards and candy with their classmates, and adults generally adorn their significant others with romantic dinners, gifts, and flowers.

April Fool’s Day

Memorial Day

April Fool’s Day is an annual custom that takes place on April 1st and involves playing practical jokes and pranks on others. April Fool’s Day has been celebrated for centuries in many cultures, but its exact origi*n is not unanimously agreed on. Some historians argue that the holiday originated in the late 16th century when France changed its calendar, marking January as the first month in the new year. People who did not learn of this change were still celebrating the old calendar’s new year, the last week of March through April 1st. These individuals were teased and made to be the butt of jokes.

Unlike the holidays mentioned here, Memorial Day does not fall on the same day every year – it is celebrated on the last Monday in May. Many Americans receive this day off work, lending itself to a highly anticipated, three-day weekend. Memorial Day honors and celebrates members of the U.S. Armed Forces who died while fighting for our country. Businesses will fly American flags at halfmast until noon, then raise them until sunset in remembrance of the nation’s fallen soldiers. Many American’s will spend their day visiting memorials, battlefields, and cemeteries to pay their respects to those who died for our country. Memorial Day also serves as the unofficial start of summer. American families often enjoy the day by the pool and attend local parades to commemorate those our country has lost.

The exact origin of April Fool’s Day remains a mystery. However, the laugh-provoking holiday is celebrated today in the form of office pranks, faux-marriage announcements, and the creative placement of a good ‘ol whoopie cushion.

Independence Day (4th of July)

Halloween

Independence Day is a federal holiday that falls on July 4th and celebrates the U.S.’s Declaration of Independence. Written in 1776, the Declaration of Independence declared the thirteen American colonies were no longer under the rule of the British monarchy. It is a holiday intended to celebrate the day the U.S. established its freedom. Americans observe the 4th of July by watching fireworks shows, enjoying a backyard grill, and listening to the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Halloween takes place on October 31st each year. The holiday involves carving pumpkins into jack-o lanterns, decorating homes and offices in scary décor, and of course, trick-or-treating, when kids don all sorts of costumes and walk house-to-house at night to collect treats. This holiday has evolved from a Pagan ritual to an excuse to dress up and eat way too much candy! Young adults celebrate Halloween by watching horror movies, visiting haunted houses, and attending costume parties.

The MedProExperience® In 2016, MedPro launched The MedPro Experience®, a personalized employee engagement program designed to recognize and reward our hard-working healthcare professionals. The program celebrates big and small milestones by incorporating creative and fun surprises intended to enhance each healthcare professional’s journey with MedPro while providing an unprecedented level of customer service.

“The MedPro Experience program was designed based on feedback from our healthcare professionals. We learned through the years that personalized service and genuine care are what matters most to them,” Sue reflects. “I feel The MedPro Experience® is a huge differentiator for MedPro. We appreciate the work our healthcare professionals are doing in the field, and we make sure to tell them, and show them,” Sue adds.

We dedicate each day to making each employee’s experience in the U.S. memorable. We do that by getting to know each of our healthcare professionals so we can personalize their rewards. Our Personal Journey Guides will work with each healthcare professional to complete their YOUnique Profiles by answering a series of “Getting to Know You” questions. Our MedPro Experience team will use their answers to help determine what gifts and surprises to send them throughout their journey with MedPro.

The program also offers a fun opportunity to earn extra money while in a new area - 13in13 DIY Challenge. Our healthcare professionals explore the area and capture memories with a photo, and we reward them for it! The 13in13 DIY Challenge provides our employees the ability to earn an extra $169 per quarter, which equates to $676 per year. Participants are also entered into our quarterly Ultimate Explorer Raffle worth $500 to the lucky winner. The MedPro Experience® offers this program to give our healthcare professionals another reason to explore the area around them. We love sharing in their exploration, encouraging them to be part of our adventurous community, and, most importantly, to have fun.

Leading this innovative program is Sue LaCkore, a MedPro Experience member since its inception. Her experience working with Marriott Hotels, as well as her ownership of an Italian restaurant, equips Sue with the customer service skills she utilizes each day at MedPro. 22
