Don’t Miss American Cuisine

The U.S. is a melting pot of cultures from around the world and you can enjoy every possible type of international cuisine. However, America is also known for its own delicious types of cuisine that tend to be big on taste and portion! Here is a rundown of some all-American cuisine:

Backyard Grill

Most U.S. citizens would argue that there is nothing more American than an old fashion cookout. American holidays like the Fourth of July, Labor Day, or Memorial Day call for friends and family to gather around and enjoy food hot off the grill. These meals typically include hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, and steak. These favorites are traditionally paired with macaroni and potato salads, pickles, corn-on-the-cob, and coleslaw.

Barbeque

Barbeque, or “BBQ” for short, is an American style of cooking meat at low temperatures over a long period of time. The most popular meats to cook in this method include pork, ribs, brisket, and chicken wings. They are traditionally smothered in barbeque sauce and cooked over an open fire or grill. The meat is shredded, chopped, or eaten off the bone and has a smoky, savory flavor that is unmistakable. Many barbeque lovers say the secret is in the sauce, which style varies in regions across the U.S., so you are encouraged to try them all and find your favorite.

Southern Cooking

If you are lucky to take an assignment in a southern state like Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, or Tennessee, you will quickly learn about their dangerously good food. Southern dishes are most common on American holidays like Thanksgiving, where baskets of cornbread and stuffing adorn most dinner tables. Other southern items you will want to try are biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits, and chicken-fried steak. We recommend these rich and hearty dishes in moderation!

Comfort Food

Many of our Explorers who take assignments in colder, northern states love to indulge in comfort food! American comfort food is everything your heart did not know it desired. A savory chicken pot pie, meatloaf, or warm bowl of macaroni and cheese is sure to warm your soul and fill your belly.

American Dessert

There is nothing more American than pies; the saying “As American as apple pie” really says it all. But there is more than one favorite pie here in the U.S. Other classics include pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and cherry pie. If your assignment is in Florida, we recommend taking a trip to Key West to introduce your taste buds to the delicious key lime pie! Other delicious American desserts include ice cream sundaes, cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies, and chocolate brownies.
