A letter from Ita Buttrose

Now

more than ever,

we all understand the importance of looking after our health and wellbeing because without our health, living life to the fullest isn’t possible. That’s why it is vital to establish good habits and supportive self-care routines. This isn’t a difficult thing to do. Start by committing to a few daily rituals and, as they become second nature, slowly build upon them. Small changes to your everyday routine, such as taking a stroll on your lunch break or adding more fruit and vegetables to your diet, can make a big difference in the long run.

Information is power, so the more we know, the better we can take care of ourselves and our loved ones. If you’ve been putting any health issues on the back burner, now is the time to tackle them head on. So many stories in this issue of YOU magazine are close to my heart. Not only do we discuss joint and bone health (page 10), you’ll also find out how to protect your family from seasonal illnesses (page 36) and beat the winter blues (page 43). In the spirit of moodboosting activities, discover how to shake up your beauty repertoire with the latest makeup looks (page 46), and restock your skincare drawer with hydrating cleansers, serums and moisturisers (page 28).

Most importantly, take the time to slow down, rug up, and invest in self-care (page 15). Make an effort to look on the bright side and try something new this winter. You will thank yourself for it.

With my very best wishes,

welcome

take care

They say prevention is better than a cure. And when it comes to skin care, this advice is spot on

Sunny disposition

When it comes to taking care of your skin, building good habits sooner rather than later is key. The most important step in your daily routine is applying an effective SPF. Sunshine contains two powerful forms of radiation – ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) – that, over time, weaken the outer layer of the skin. “These rays can lead to visible signs of ageing, such as hyperpigmentation, age spots and even wrinkles,” says Gloria. To preserve your skin’s youthful glow, she recommends wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen each and every day, even in winter.

Easy as A, B, vitamin C

While you may be well-versed in the benefits of vitamins for inner health, did you know that topical antioxidants can help protect your skin, too? Praised as one of the best anti-ageing ingredients out there, vitamin C helps maintain a smooth, supple and glowing complexion. Not only does it hydrate and brighten, vitamin C can offset daily aggressors like pollution, sunrays and other premature agers by neutralising free radicals. It’s also a vital cofactor in the production of collagen, meaning it helps stimulate and regulate synthesis of collagen for strength and elasticity. Please and thank you.

3. JSHealth Pro-Collagen Vitamin Serum 30mL, $74.99. 4. Garnier SkinActive Vitamin C Brightening Serum 30mL, $29.99.

In with the new

If you’ve ever wished you could turn back the clock and revive the skin of your youth, retinol is here to make that dream a reality. Considered the ultimate skincare multitasker, retinol (which derives from vitamin A) works by boosting skin cell rejuvenation. “Retinol-rich products help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by bringing forward new skin and improving skin cell turnover,” says Gloria. Available in various strengths, it’s vital to not rush into retinol. Gloria suggests introducing it into your routine slowly, starting with a pea-sized amount every other day, and making sure to pair with a hydrating moisturiser and SPF.

5. Revolution Skincare Retinol Serum 30mL, $20. 6. Skin Republic Retinol Hydrogel Face Mask 25g, $12.99.

7. No7 Radiance+ 15% Vitamin C Serum 25mL, $34.99.

To the point

When topical products just won’t cut it, microneedling treatments take anti-ageing to the next level. And while perhaps a little off-putting in theory, microneedling devotees argue that the results are worth the minor discomfort. Treatments like Clear Skincare Clinic’s Dermapen Skin Needling involve thousands of micro-punctures on the skin’s surface, in an attempt to trigger the body’s natural healing process and reveal fresher, more youthful-looking skin. For at-home treatments, you can use a derma roller to achieve similar results. However, with great outcomes comes great responsibility. Gloria warns that you’ll need to cut back on actives in your skincare routine, avoid excessive sun exposure and plan your eyebrow wax accordingly in the lead-up to treatment. Pay attention to aftercare instructions and nourish skin with emollient barrier creams to protect and repair.

from the inside out

A daily dose of supplements will help keep you fighting fit this winter

Supplements are fuel for the immune system, especially during winter when additional stressors, such as colds and flus, are prevalent. “As the seasons change, listen to your body and take the vitamins that you might need more of during the colder months,” says Priceline Pharmacist Ed Tanzil. Get to know the vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay in top form this season.

Vitamin B

Vitamin B is the star of the show when it comes to supporting the nervous system and relieving tiredness. “B-group vitamins are important for managing stress, as well as boosting immune function to help ward off seasonal cold and flu,” Ed explains. Because the body is unable to store this group of vitamins, you need a healthy intake every day. Found naturally in fresh fruits like bananas and oranges, as well as nuts and wholegrains, a balanced diet should have your supplies covered. However, if you find your stores are low, a simple supplement might be the answer.

1. Nature’s Own Super B Complex 75 Tablets, $23.99.

Vitamin C

The superhero of fighting infections, vitamin C can help speed up your recovery from seasonal ailments and even reduce the severity of symptoms. It’s also known to assist with iron absorption, keep connective tissue healthy and promote skin and bone health. A vitamin supplement per day might just keep the doctor away this winter.

2. Cenovis Sugarless C 500mg Vitamin C 300 Tablets, $21.99.

Vitamin D

Sometimes called the sunshine vitamin, Ed is quick to name vitamin D as one of the most important supplements to add to your routine from now until August. “Winter in most places generally means less sun, more wind and harsher weather, which can lead to less time outdoors and lowered levels of vitamin D,” he says. Depending on where you live, you might benefit from boosting your vitamin D levels year-round. In the long run, it will help your body absorb calcium and phosphate – both essential for healthy bones and the prevention of osteoporosis.

3. Ostelin Vitamin D3 1000IU 250 Capsules, $35.99.

Probiotics

Good gut health plays a significant role in overall wellbeing, making a daily probiotic an effective tool in supporting your immune system. From mental clarity to regulating gut function, Ed recommends a daily probiotic to help maintain balance in your body. “General probiotics usually have two to six strains of probiotic, with the main emphasis being on two key types of bacteria that your gut needs: lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium lactis,” he explains. If you suffer from medically diagnosed IBS or are experiencing symptoms of thrush, talk to your Pharmacist about targeted treatments.

4. Life-Space Broad Spectrum Probiotic 60 Capsules, $41.99.

Zinc

Zinc works hard to keep your immune system and metabolism running smoothly by assisting in the production of new cells and enzymes. This can be particularly helpful when you’re fighting bacterial or viral infections. Proven to promote hair and nail health, a zinc supplement can help repair brittle strands and damaged cuticles, keeping you feeling good inside as well as out during the chilly months.

5. Swisse Zinc+ 60 Tablets, $14.99.

6. Nature’s Own Zinc + C Chewable 60 Tablets, $14.99.

joint venture

Paying attention to joint pain and bone health early in life can save you a lot of agony down the track

Joint pain – any form of discomfort, soreness or inflammation that arises from the joints – can be debilitating, preventing you from performing daily tasks with comfort. “Physical impact and trauma to our joints over time are some of the major causes of joint pain,” says Priceline Pharmacist Ed Tanzil. It pays to have an understanding of the main causes and start adopting preventative measures early on.

Ed’s top tips

While it can be easy to let your health fall by the wayside when you’ve got work to do, children to raise and Netflix shows to binge, being proactive is something you’ll never regret. Ed has five tips for preventing and treating joint pain.

1. Stretch before exercising

Ensuring you have a good range of motion in your joints prior to exercising will reduce the likelihood of injury. If you suffer from chronic joint pain, opt for low-impact aerobic exercises such as walking, cycling and swimming as they place minimal pressure on the joints.

Good bones

Laying good foundations is the key to ageing gracefully.

20s & 30s:

You’re young, fit and agile. Now’s the time to build up your bone mass by adding calcium-rich foods to your shopping list and exercising regularly – your bones will thank you later. Weight-bearing exercises, like jogging, and resistance exercises, such as weight training or reformer pilates, are particularly effective for strengthening bones.

40s & 50s:

2.

Consume nutrient-rich foods

Make friends with soybeans, dairy and leafy greens. “Maintaining a diet rich in calcium and minerals is very important for good joint and bone health,” says Ed. For extra support, try a daily calcium supplement.

Nature’s Way Joint Restore Osteo Krill 50 Capsules, $30.99.

Excess weight can add stress and pressure to your joints (particularly your knees), so it’s important to strive towards a healthy weight. For help and advice, schedule a chat with your GP to come up with a balanced lifestyle plan.

4. Take anti-inflammatory medications

Certain medication can help reduce mild joint pain in the short term, “especially if there is acute soft-tissue damage around the joints”, says Ed.

5. Check in regularly with your doctor

If you suffer from joint pain, it’s important to have regular check-ins with your GP to pre-empt future issues. “A lack of cartilage in a specific joint, for example, can be managed with supplements if diagnosed early,” says Ed.

As you creep into these middle years, you may feel like your body is catching up with you. Make simple changes (like taking the stairs) to improve your health, and continue eating calcium-rich foods. If you experience any uncomfortable niggles in your joints, visit your GP and consider adding a calcium supplement to your diet.

60s & 70s:

Embrace opportunities to stay active. Get outside and play with the grandchildren, or go for a gentle walk (and coffee) with a friend. Simple weight-bearing exercises are ideal for strengthening bones. Don’t get complacent when it comes to aches and pains – schedule regular check-ins with your GP to stay on top of any issues and prevent them from getting worse.

80s & up:

Stay mobile by regularly getting out and about, but don’t push your body too far. Now’s the perfect time to lean on your family for extra support – whether it’s picking up the groceries or driving you to appointments. Your appetite may reduce, but it’s important to maintain a healthy diet (just don’t short-change yourself on some well-earned treats).

It’s

time to brush up on your oral health

Looking after your pearly whites is about more than just having a great smile. Oral hygiene contributes to your overall health and wellbeing, so it’s important to establish good habits early on in life. “Taking care of your teeth and gums is as important as eating healthy foods and finding time for daily exercise,” says Priceline Pharmacist Geoff Hope. “Cavities and gum disease can impair your ability to eat and speak properly, cause severe pain and toothaches, and lead to chronic bad breath.”

Minty fresh

It’s important to brush your teeth regularly to remove the build-up of plaque and tartar, and polish away any food or drink residue that may result in stains and decay. Geoff recommends brushing your teeth morning and night, for roughly two minutes each time. Choose a toothpaste with fluoride to help strengthen your enamel and a soft-bristled brush – no one likes bleeding gums – for the best clean. If you have braces or Invisalign, it’s a good idea to brush after each meal. A quick mouthwash rinse and sugar-free gum is an okay alternative for when you don’t have access to a bathroom for a brush.

Top tip: Watch the clock

Shine bright

Lingering stains and discolouration can be frustrating. Aside from avoiding teeth-staining food and drinks in the first place (tea, coffee and red wine, we’re looking at you), whitening products can help bring you back to pearly white status. Look for tools that use blue LED light to activate ingredients and speed up the process.

String theory

Let’s be honest, we’re all guilty of letting flossing fall to the wayside of an evening. But ultimately, it gets to the root of a lot of oral health issues. If you skip the floss, you’re leaving 35% of your teeth uncleaned.

“Flossing removes those tricky bits of food that get caught between your teeth, as well as bacteria and plaque,” says Geoff. “Making it part of your routine at least a few times per week reduces the chance of gum disease and tooth decay in the long term.” You can level up your routine by investing in an oral irrigator – an at-home device that uses a stream of pressurised pulsating water to clean between the teeth.

Make an appointment

Even with a robust oral hygiene routine in place, it’s important to have regular dental check-ups.

Geoff recommends visiting your dentist every six months for a clean. “Don’t wait until you’ve got a problem to fix. Professional cleaning helps to prevent cavities and allows for early intervention if any issues arise,” he says. Most private health insurance will offer gap-free dental check-ups with preferred providers, so it’s worth looking into or updating your policy.

the slow down

Switch o , stay calm and get a good night’s rest

Burnout – a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress – has become an increasingly common complaint. And as the pandemic blurs the lines between work, school and home life – leaving little room for pleasure – switching off (our screens and our minds) to prevent total depletion can seem almost impossible.

But instead of doomscrolling the news or binge-watching escapist TV before bed, Priceline Pharmacist Jeyda Shiaxiates recommends committing to a healthy night-time routine to unwind.

“Burnout doesn’t go away on its own and, if left untreated, can lead to serious physical and psychological illness,” she warns. Three simple techniques show the path to preventing and recovering from total exhaustion.

Find the time

Setting aside even just 10 minutes a day for a mental health practice, such as mindfulness, has long-term benefits. “Mindfulness teaches you to form an awareness of your inner state,” says Jeyda. “Mastering this will allow you to clear your mind, refocus and switch off from your thoughts in moments of stress.” Or you could tap into the ritualistic regimen of facial massage to find some zen. After applying your favourite facial oil, use a gua sha or roller to release tension in your jaw and temples. Make long, sweeping motions in an upwards direction using light to medium pressure.

Set boundaries

Sound sleep hygiene is an important part of good rest. Jeyda suggests “applying sleep settings to your phone, removing lights to create a dark room, and avoiding stimulating your mind for at least 30 minutes before sleep”. Some people leave their phones outside the bedroom to create a physical boundary. But, if you rely on your device as an alarm, an eye mask can help with the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ approach. Finish off with a spritz of sleep spray on your pillow to help you drift off.

2. Sweet Little Things Cosy Queen Warming Eye Mask, $9.99. 3. The Base Collective Magnesium & Lavender Beauty Sleep Spray 100mL, $18.99.

Relax into it

Don’t be afraid to get physical with your relaxation. “Nidra yoga (or yogic sleep) uses physical guided meditation to improve sleep quality, reduce stress and encourage deep relaxation,” Jeyda explains. You can also try a restorative yin yoga session to help relieve the physical signs of burnout, as the poses target deep connective tissues that hold tension. If you still struggle to drift off, a sleep supplement might be the answer. Melatonin helps regulate sleep-wake cycles and can fight the effects of jet lag, insomnia and shift work with shortterm use. Speak to your Pharmacist or GP about what might work for you.

Ask your pharmacist about this product. For the short term treatment of primary insomnia, characterised by poor quality of sleep, in adults aged 55 years or over. Primary insomnia is insomnia without an underlying medical cause or any other clear cause.

stay well

Shore up your body’s defences for a healthy winter

Most of us are fluent in the language of social distancing, mask wearing, and fervent hand washing by now. But even with the most powerful pandemic precautions in place, it’s possible to still fall victim to viruses this winter. Experts warn that cooler temperatures and a gradual return to ‘normal’ life – busy workplaces, social gatherings and international travel – can leave us particularly vulnerable to bringing home a bug. Priceline Pharmacist Megan Kazantzis shares her top tips for avoiding a cold or flu this season.

Scrub up

As temperatures drop, it’s worth paying extra attention to your hygiene habits. While seemingly simple, Megan tells us that regularly and thoroughly washing your hands is the number one way to ward off germs. Aim for at least 20 seconds with soap and water before you eat, after using the bathroom and when you return home from daily outings like going to the supermarket or school pick-up. Remember, it’s important to avoid touching your face, and always cough or sneeze into your elbow to stop the spread.

Frequent hand washing with harsh chemicals can leave sensitive skin feeling dry and sore. Opt for a solution that’s gentle on skin but tough on germs.

1. Dr. Bronner’s Rose PureCastile Liquid Soap 237mL, $14.19.

Antibacterial wipes and hand sanitiser are good solutions when you’re on the go.

2. Dettol 2 in 1 Hands & Surfaces

Anti-bacterial Wipes 15 Wipes, $2.99.

Your guide to the flu shot

How does the flu vaccine work? Vaccinations are a safe and effective way to protect yourself and others from the influenza virus, by stimulating the body’s natural immune response. Each year, new flu vaccinations are developed to protect against serious flu-related illnesses, like bronchitis, croup and pneumonia.

Defence force

The best way to boost your immune system is to get adequate sleep, stay hydrated and eat nutritious meals. But as winter ramps up, it pays to give your body extra help fighting off any bugs that come your way. According to Megan, products containing vitamin C, zinc and andrographis are best at strengthening your defences from the inside out. They can also help lessen the severity of cold and flu symptoms if they do take hold.

Look for supplements that support healthy immune function.

3. JSHealth Immune + High Strength 60 Tablets, $49.99. A targeted cold and flu blend works to reduce symptoms.

4. Blackmores Bio C + Cold Fighter 60 Tablets, $27.99.

As the weather cools, put your faith in natural infection-fighting ingredients.

5. Ethical Nutrients Immune Defence 60 Capsules, $44.99.

Time out

Even with good hygiene and bolstered immunity, it’s still possible to contract a cold or flu. At the first sign of symptoms, turn to over-the-counter solutions to remedy aches and pains. Megan advises to always check with your Pharmacist and understand which products are right for you. It’s important to seek medical attention if your symptoms worsen or you experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, sudden dizziness or confusion, severe vomiting or high fever that does not respond to paracetamol. Most importantly, stay home if you’re sick and take the time to fully recover before returning to work, school or the busyness of life.

Relieve symptoms of sore throat with antioxidant-rich lozenges.

6. Sambucol 20 Lozenges, $9.99.

Target the source of a dry, scratchy throat with bacteria-killing ingredients.

7. Betadine Ready To Use Sore Throat Gargle 120mL, $11.99.

Stop throat pain in its tracks with numbing agents that reduce redness and swelling.

8. Di lam Plus Anaesthetic Sore Throat Spray Watermelon 30mL, $15.99.

When should I get the flu vaccine? While the influenza virus is present year-round, outbreaks typically occur in colder months, from April to September. With international borders now open, Megan warns to expect a significant increase in flu cases this winter. Get your shot as early as possible for the best protection.

What should I expect from the flu vaccine? The flu shot can have some side effects. These are typically mild and short-lasting and can include redness or discomfort at the site of the injection, mild fever and muscle pains. To help alleviate these symptoms, Megan suggests staying hydrated and making time for rest post-vaccination.

Ita was destined for a career in the media. “I read the newspapers with him from an early age,” says Ita. “We often discussed the news of the day. All the good things that have happened in my career have been through journalism.” From humble beginnings, Ita forged her own path and built a career fit for the history books. She has earned many awards acknowledging her services to journalism throughout an illustrious career, including an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1979 and Order of Australia (AO) in 1988. Three years ago, Ita was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) – one of the highest honours in Australia, acknowledging her commitment to the public as a journalist and businesswoman.

After she made history as the youngest ever editor of The Australian Women’s Weekly in 1976, Ita’s career took an unexpected turn. Five years later Ita was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph, making her the first woman to edit a major metropolitan newspaper in Australia. As it was a role that had previously only been held by men, Ita recalls feeling “a little nervous” on her first day in the office. “The staff were apprehensive, too, as they’d never had a female boss before,” says Ita. “In fact, they doubted a woman could edit newspapers. I had to prove myself all over again.” And that she did. Today, Ita holds the highly esteemed position of Chair of the ABC – a role that she is exceptionally proud of.

“Hard though it may be, you have to find half an hour for some ‘me time’, where you can put your own needs first.”

The Sisterhood

Having championed women’s rights and freedoms throughout her career, it was fitting that Ita was invited to become a Priceline Ambassador and Patron of the Priceline Sisterhood Foundation in 2014 – an organisation dedicated to supporting Australian women and their families. Formed in 2011, the foundation raises funds for four charity partners: Motherless Daughters Australia, Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia (PANDA), Raise Foundation and Dementia Australia. “Being Patron [of the Sisterhood Foundation] allows me to be part of one of the biggest community self-help programs in Australia, and the foundation gives everyone in the Priceline family the opportunity to make a difference, while reminding us that life isn’t just about taking – it’s also about giving,” says Ita. To date, the foundation has raised over $8.6 million for its charity partners.

Ita has a personal connection to Dementia Australia in particular, having cared for her father when he was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2008. The charity aims to empower people living with dementia, as well as their families and carers. They act as a trusted source of information for the misunderstood condition, which is currently the second leading cause of death in the country. According to Dementia Australia, there are approximately half a million Australians living with dementia today, and 1.6 million involved in their care.

“Being principal carer for my father is a period in my life that I shall never forget,” says Ita. “His dementia often made him do things that were quite out of character – both amusing and sad. I’ll never forget the Christmas Eve I took the kids up to have afternoon tea with Dad at his home on Sydney’s North Shore. He was waiting in the lounge room, sitting before a blazing fire. It was about 32 degrees outside. ‘I was cold,’ he said – he even had a sweater on. So, we had afternoon tea in front of the fire, on one of the hottest summer days. It was a memorable Christmas Eve, that’s for sure.” For family members caring for loved ones with this disease, Ita says it’s important to remember, “You are not alone. You have to laugh sometimes – laughter, tears and mixed emotions are all part of the dementia journey.”

The Sealed Section

After earning her stripes as Women’s Editor at the Daily Telegraph, Ita (alongside media tycoon Kerry Packer) set about creating a new magazine that spoke to Australian women like no publication had done before. In 1971, Ita was announced as the founding editor of Cleo magazine – a masthead that put women at the centre of conversations around education, workplace equality and sexual liberation. The appetite for Cleo was immediately clear when the entire print run sold out in just two days. “Cleo revolutionised the content in women’s magazines,” says Ita. “We broke new ground, and at the same time, produced a magazine that spoke frankly about women’s health and sexual desires without being offensive.”

While at the helm of Cleo, Ita famously pioneered the nude male centrefold plus the sealed section, where taboo content was hidden behind a perforated paper strip. “The sealed section allowed women the privacy to read its contents when they chose to and without other members of the household, including children, being able to see it,” says Ita. Today, conversations around women’s health and sexuality are more open than ever before. “They are discussed more openly and matter-of-factly. There is less secrecy and very few, if any, taboo topics,” says Ita. Thankfully, this means we’ve been able to do away with the sealed section altogether.

Finding time for health and wellness

Having seen the effects ill health can have on one’s quality of life, Ita made an effort to prioritise her wellness early in her career.

“As all women know, it’s difficult to juggle our many roles, especially when the children are younger and need constant attention. Hard though it may be, you have to find half an hour for some ‘me time’, where you can put your own needs first,” says Ita. “I used to get up early to do an exercise program while the children slept. If someone was staying with me, I’d ask them to mind the children while I went for a run. Thirty minutes of ‘me time’ makes a big difference to your wellbeing.”

As her children grew up and parental responsibilities eased, Ita was able to find more time for exercise. “I go to the gym twice a week, occasionally do some water therapy, walk regularly in a nearby park and do stretching exercises on my home balcony. As we get older exercise is essential, and the phrase ‘use it or lose it’ takes on a new meaning. My aim is to keep my joints as supple as I possibly can so that I can move well and maintain good posture,” says Ita. With five grandchildren and multiple high-profile roles and responsibilities, Ita’s constant dedication to good health is something to be admired. Her secret? “Healthy eating, regular exercise and adequate sleep are my healthy-lifestyle fundamentals,” she says. In fact, there’s a lot we can learn from Ita Buttrose – a woman who has pursued her career goals despite the odds and never taken her health and wellness for granted. We’d all benefit from taking a leaf out of her book.

Found yourself with a compromised skin barrier? It might be time for a skintervention

While 12-step routines have risen to skincare fame in recent years, there’s something to be said for a less-is-more approach. If you’re suffering from sensitivity, roughness and redness more than usual this winter, you might have a compromised skin barrier. “Your skin barrier is the outermost layer, which protects the delicate skin growing beneath,” explains Priceline Beauty Advisor Chloe Sibbel. “It can be susceptible to micro-tears, which compromise your skin function,” she adds. The culprits? Overexfoliation and too many active ingredients.

Even though our favourite actives (hello retinol, vitamin C and AHAs) promise glowy skin, sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. “Exfoliation is key to helping your active ingredients penetrate. However, overloading your skin and causing damage to your barrier layer means that irritants and pollutants can enter the skin, too,” says Chloe. Itchy, dry and scaly patches are sure signs that something is not quite right. So is an increase in acne spots, perioral dermatitis, and flare-ups of eczema and rosacea.

But don’t despair, repair is possible. Chloe says the best thing to do is nothing at all: “Just let your skin do its thing. All it needs is a gentle clean and a nourishing moisturiser.” She recommends La RochePosay’s Toleriane range for its calming and soothing properties. Once your skin is able to breathe, you can start reintroducing serums and level up the intensity of barrier creams. With consistent care (and a bit of patience), your skin should restore itself within two to four weeks.

2. No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Day Cream 50mL, $44.99. 3. No7 HydraLuminous Water Concentrate 30mL, $29.99. 4. Bondi Sands Thirsty Skin Hyaluronic Acid Serum 30mL, $15.95. 5.

Hydration station

Not all moisturisers are created equal. Depending on the time of year and your current concerns, it pays to tailor your creams and lotions to your skin’s needs. There are three main types of moisturising agents, which can exist on their own or in combination with other ingredients: humectants, emollients and occlusives. If you’re dealing with incredibly parched skin, you might want to layer your hydration. Start with the lightest product and seal everything in with the heaviest in your arsenal.

Humectants

Humectants act like a sponge, attracting and binding moisture, and ultimately increasing the skin’s water content. Ingredients like aloe vera, hyaluronic acid and glycerin fall into this category of moisturiser. Sometimes referred to as water-based creams, humectant-led moisturisers are lightweight to touch but can do some serious heavy lifting when it comes to combating dryness. For optimal results, apply these products to a damp face (either still wet from cleansing or misted with a facial spray) and let them work their magic.

Emollients

Designed to soften the skin, emollient moisturisers are incredibly nourishing. Working to restore the skin’s barrier, they also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Look for ingredient lists that are rich in natural oils, such as grape seed and jojoba, or products that are laden with cocoa or shea butters.

2. The Ordinary 100% PlantDerived Squalane 30mL, $14.70.

3. The Jojoba Company Australian Jojoba 85mL, $32.99.

Occlusives

Occlusives operate by forming a protective layer on the surface of your skin to prevent any moisture loss. This lets the skin (and any products) underneath repair and recover. Often rich in texture, these moisturising agents should be used as the last step in your routine. Chapped lips and areas of the body that are prone to cracking will benefit most from their soothing touch.

Bad hair days are a thing of the past. Tame your tresses with the right tools, and our top tips and tricks

All-rounder

Round brushes are the best choice for voluminous blowouts and loose curls. The right diameter is dependent on your hair length, but as a general rule, a larger brush will equal more bounce. Firmer, denser bristles create more tension when pulling the hair, which creates more volume and lift in the end result.

1. Lady Jayne Salon Pro Large Ceramic Radial Styling Brush, $29.99.

Straight shooter

Always make sure your hair is completely dry before you start straightening. If you’ve been using the same tool for a while, it might be time to update your tech. Newer devices are fitted with heat sensors that reduce stress on your strands and promise a frizz-free finish.

2. Remington PROluxe You Adaptive Straightener, $199.95.

The blowout

Invest in a quality hair dryer (especially if you have thick hair) to achieve silky, smooth locks. It’s important to avoid leaving the house with wet hair in winter so be sure to set your alarm a few minutes earlier on wash days.

3. VS Sassoon Pro Dry 2300W Hair Dryer, $29.99.

Make waves

When it comes to curls, you’ll get the best results if you start by dividing your hair into small sections. Alternate directions as you twist hair around the wand, and curl the front away from your face to open up and enhance your features. Make sure you’re using the right barrel size for your hair length, thickness and texture.

4. Remington Hydraluxe Curling Iron, $69.99.

Retro revival

Nineties nostalgia aside, the claw clip is the ultimate accessory this winter for damage-free updos. A clip will put less stress on your hair than an elastic band (especially when wet) if you want to sweep it out of your face for a bit.

Hot tip:

Your week in hair

Get a grip

If your bathroom is littered with bobby pins that are bent out of shape, it’s time to replenish your supplies. Look for cushioned tips that protect the hair and scalp to minimise damage, and style with the ridges face-down for max hold.

6. Models Prefer Super Grip Bobby Pins in brown 120 Pack, $8.99.

On the up

Style slicked-back ponytails with coilstyle ties to prevent snagging or tangles. They offer ample hold without creasing or kinking your hair.

7. Lady Jayne Style Guards Kink-Free Spirals Clear 8 Pack, $7.99.

In knots

Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle after washing. Hair is more vulnerable and prone to breakage when it’s wet so tread carefully to reduce any fallout.

8. Models Prefer Full Bodied with Keratin Oil Teasing & Styling Comb, $6.99.

Star power

Aside from being the perfect makeshift shower mic, a paddle brush can do you wonders. The stiff bristles are effective at stimulating the scalp (to promote growth) and help brush out dandruff or buildup from styling products.

9. Models Prefer Full Bodied with Keratin Oil Cushioned Pin Oval Paddle, $12.99

Deciding when to wash your hair can be a puzzling equation. While overwashing can have serious consequences for your locks (even more so in the colder months), underwashing can also lead to compromised scalp health. Priceline Beauty Advisor Kat Ramfos outlines the ultimate haircare plan for the week ahead. Adjust this schedule to suit your hair type and texture, and invest in moisture-rich products to banish dry, dull or damaged hair this winter.

Monday

Start the week strong with a deep cleanse and restorative condition. A sulphate-free shampoo is kinder to dry or brittle strands – wash, rinse and repeat. Follow up with a leave-in conditioner and let your hair dry naturally to help it retain plenty of moisture. Boost shine and protect your hair from the elements with a lightweight mist that makes day-two hair more manageable. You might also want to reach for a texturising spray to revive volume if you long for perfectly tousled tresses.

winter woes

Look after the skin you’re in during the chilly season

When it comes to the cold months, there’s lots to love. Think delicious hot chocolate, cosy sweaters and coats, and an excuse to stay in for movie nights. On the flip side, winter weather can leave your skin feeling less than fabulous. Low temperatures and humidity levels – both indoors and out – cause dryness and dehydration, and can exacerbate existing conditions. Follow these dos and don’ts from our experts to combat seasonal skin issues.

Chapped lips

Red, sore and cracked; these are not the statement lips we’re after this winter.

Do: At the first sign of chapped lips, hit them with nourishing balms and ointments. Look for lanolin, mineral oil or sorbolene on the packaging as these create a film to lock in moisture and help sore lips heal. Get ahead of chapped lips by adding a balm that offers sun protection (at least SPF 30) into your routine to prevent sun damage and dryness.

Don’t: Whatever you do, do not lick dry lips. The saliva from your tongue can strip moisture from your lips, causing them to dry out faster. Avoid picking at any bits of dry skin, too, and steer clear of spicy, salty or acidic foods, as well as any products with fragrances or flavourings as these can cause further irritation.

Natio Shea Butter Lip Balm, $4.95. Lanolips 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm 15g, $18.99. Carmex Minis Squeeze Tube 3 Pack $8.99. Dermal Therapy Lip Balm SPF 50+, $6.99.

Dry and cracked skin

Cold weather zaps moisture from the skin, leaving it looking parched and dull. Basically, not cute. Do: Use ultra-gentle washes in the shower and apply hydrating topical ointments to affected areas (typically knuckles, elbows and knees). When it comes to hands, opt for non-greasy barrier creams that contain glycerin – a hydrating ingredient that draws moisture to the skin. “Barrier creams seal moisture in and keep everything else out,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Chloe Sibbel.

Don’t: Ignoring dryness can lead to cracked, sore and infected skin. If you reach this point, it’s time to seek help. “Be sure to visit a doctor or dermatologist if your skin issues become worse, disrupt your sleep, or appear to weep or ooze,” Priceline Pharmacist Megan Kazantzis advises.

Facial dryness

Dryness and irritation on your face is frustrating at best (and painful at worst).

Do: To combat general dryness and restore your skin’s glow, look to organic jojoba – a natural ingredient rich in nutrients and antioxidants that soothes, repairs and moisturises. Double down with moisturising masks around the delicate eye area, and layer your skincare products for next-level hydration. “I suggest layering waterbased hydrators such as aloe vera and hyaluronic acid underneath oilbased hydrators like lanolin, mineral oil and ceramides,” says Chloe. Don’t: When it comes to dealing with dryness, remember that less is more. Strip your skincare routine back to basics, avoid makeup as much as possible and turn the heat down on showers and baths. Anything that causes further dryness and irritation is a big no.

Skin conditions

If you’re prone to skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, you may find that these occur most aggressively in cold, dry weather. “In winter, we spend more time in artificially heated environments and wear more layers of clothing. Artificial heating causes the air to be quite dry and heavy clothing can lead to irritation, causing skin conditions to flare up,” says Megan. Here’s how you can relieve symptoms.

Psoriasis

Characterised by patches of white scales on the skin, psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that causes an overproduction of skin cells. Dead cells build up on the surface of the skin, resulting in itchiness and inflammation. “Avoid products with soap and use soap-free washes or bath oils instead. Goat’s milk lotions are particularly good,” says Megan. If you’re prone to psoriasis, ditch the woollen gloves and opt for hand warmers that fit snugly in your palms.

1. Alpha Keri Shower & Bath Oil 1L, $19.99. 2. Hot Hands Super Warmers Body, $1.99. 3. MooGoo Natural Milk Wash 500mL, $17.50.

Eczema

Commonly referred to as atopic dermatitis, eczema occurs when the skin has a reaction to triggers such as soaps and fabrics (i.e. wool and nylon). Skin appears red, itchy and sometimes blistered, typically inside the elbows, behind the knees and on hands and feet. To help relieve irritated skin, apply petroleum jelly or a gentle moisturiser to the affected areas after showering. Your pharmacist may also recommend a hydrocortisone cream to reduce inflammation and itchiness.

Winter can wreak havoc on delicate skin. Combat dryness and cracking by gently massaging moisturising cream all over, focusing on the inner elbows and behind the knees. Look for shampoos, creams and body washes formulated for babies and children, as these are often free from added fragrances and parabens that can cause irritation. “When a child’s skin is dry or cracked, avoid using bubble bath products and soaps as these can aggravate the skin further,” says Priceline Pharmacist Jeyda Shiaxiates. Financial fitness is just as important as your physical wellbeing. Whether you're in debt, are saving for something special or just want to get on top of your bills, your challenge this winter is to make a budget (and stick to it). Plan a home spa night with friends for a pocket-friendly alternative to Friday night drinks.

Cognitive function is important when it comes to overall health –no matter your age. Try doing the Sunday crossword, joining a book club or learning a new language to help improve memory and focus. When our brains are busy, a daily supplement can support minds, too.

2. Wanderlust Brain Mushroom Powder 75g, $42.99.

Step it up

Commit to taking 10,000 daily steps for one month this winter. Not only will you feel the effects on your physical health, but time in the great outdoors will do wonders for your mood, too. Use your phone or smartwatch to track your progress, and make time weekly for a well-earned bubble bath to reward your tired limbs.

3. Epzen Sleep Magnesium Bath Crystals 900g, $15.99.

Running yourself ragged doesn’t benefit anyone. Set boundaries, nourish your body and actively switch off to promote self-care. mood boosters

Nine

A shift in season can affect our mood more than we’d care to admit. If you find yourself oversleeping and overeating, with a general lack of energy and motivation around this time, you might be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The key to weathering any emotional storms that roll in this winter is to check in on your mental health and find ways to lift your spirits. Priceline Pharmacist Jeyda Shiaxiates offers wellbeing tips and remedies that will see you through to spring.

Walk it off

Moving your body is one of the best ways to unwind your mind. Serotonin plus endorphins results in an immediate pick-me-up, so get outside when the sunlight is at its brightest for a steady stroll or brisk walk.

Make a plan

Maintaining a regular daily schedule, including getting up at the same time each day, can help create structure when you’re feeling a little wobbly. You can also book appointments, from coffee with a co-worker to an after-work exercise class, to keep you motivated and give you something to look forward to. Add each activity to your diary, set reminder notifications, and try and stay committed.

Talk it out

Speaking about how we’re feeling is important. Open up to friends and family if you’re struggling, and ask a trusty buddy to check in on you if you’re feeling particularly down. Don’t forget to ask how they’re doing, too.

Cut the booze

A glass of wine at the end of the day might bring about an instant wave of calm, but it can actually do more harm than good. Alcohol is a depressant, meaning it can disrupt brain function

and affect our thoughts and behaviour. And we all know waking up with a hangover is hard at the best of times. Switch out your favourite pinot for a kombucha, herbal tea or non-alcoholic cocktail.

Eat well

While we all love to indulge in comfort foods, eating well-balanced meals with plenty of fruit and vegetables will help support your body and mind (page 58). Fuelling your body with the vitamins and minerals it needs won’t just help keep the flu at bay, but it can also reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, improving mental wellbeing in the long run.

Write about it

Getting your feelings out of your head and onto paper is great for coping with stress, anxiety and depression. Try starting your day with 10 minutes of free writing to help declutter your mind. If you’re more of a night owl, note down three things that made you feel good that day before you head off to bed.

Book a holiday

Whether it’s a week away somewhere warm or a daytrip near home, changing up your environment can help you overcome feelings of stagnation. The excitement and anticipation in the lead-up will give you a boost, too, as you look forward to what lies ahead.

Take a breath

It seems simple but sometimes we need a little reminder to inhale and exhale. Deep breathing can slow the release of cortisol (the stress hormone) and disengage our brains from distracting thoughts. Yoga, mindfulness and meditation are great ways to build your breathing practice.

Look on the bright side this winter with these mood-boosting beauty looks

Models Prefer Angled Blush Brush, $14.99.

Skin tip

Before applying your base, supercharge your complexion with hyaluronic acid – designed to hydrate, plump and nourish parched skin. Sarah recommends applying hyaluronic acid to slightly damp skin to amplify its radiance-boosting effects.

The trend: overheated blush

Hear us out: bold, flushed cheeks are your ticket to party-worthy glam. Made famous in the ’80s by icons like Boy George and Debbie Harry, vivid blush is back in a big way. To bring this look into 2022, Sarah suggests trying a liquid or cream blush. “The colour will melt into your skin rather than sitting on top, and give you that ‘glow from within’ vibe,” she says. “Buff it into the skin with a fluffy brush for a soft, blended finish.” Highly pigmented formulas add to the fun, so go bold for a look that’ll turn heads in the best way.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Sunscreens are only one component of sun protection. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Frequent use and re-application in accordance with directions is required for e ective sun protection.

Skin tip

To achieve the kind of glow you see on your Instagram feed, prep your skin with products that will elevate your natural radiance. Reveal soft and smooth skin with a glycolic acid exfoliator, followed by a serum, moisturiser and (of course) SPF.

The trend: sheer foundation

Luminous, natural-looking skin is the trending choice for off-duty models around the globe. Streamline your morning makeup routine with a simple and radiant base that’ll have your friends wondering what your secret is. “Try a BB cream or tinted moisturiser for the ultimate sheer glow,” says Sarah. “Or use a contoured brush to apply a very thin layer of coverage foundation to your skin without the heaviness.” Voila – enjoy weightless,

Skin tip

Take off bold eye shadow with a waterproof makeup remover that’ll cut through the product with ease – no pulling or tugging required. A swipe of soothing eye cream over your lids will gently restore and hydrate the skin.

The trend: defined eyes

Make your eyes pop with a subtle smoky eye. Line both lids for a glamorous look that will unleash confidence, night and day. “The easiest way to achieve this look is to start with a black or dark brown eyeliner pencil and gently buff it out with a short smudging brush,” explains Sarah. “Then add a little black, brown or grey eye shadow over the top to add to the drama.” The best part about this look is its versatility. “Keep the shadow close to the lash line for the office, and smudge it out for a night on the town.”

The trend: metallic moment

Colourful, sparkly and delightfully fun, metallic eyes are having a serious pop culture moment this season. Inspired by the HBO series Euphoria (starring our favourite it-girl, Zendaya), two-toned, shimmery shadow is our look of choice for nights out with the girls. “For a wearable take on this trend, add a wash of metallic shadow on the inner corners of your eyes and try a contrasting tone for the rest of the lid,” says Sarah. Finish your look with curled lashes and a generous coat of mascara.

Skin tip

Preparation is the key to luscious lips. Gently buff away dead skin with a lip scrub before applying a hydrating lip primer that will soften the skin and allow your lip colour to last for longer. That’s something to smile about.

The trend: brick lips

This season, deep-red and brown-toned lips are back in full force, and we’re 100% here for it. Ideal for winter, dark lips are effortlessly cool and make you look instantly put together. “To keep the look fresh, choose a natural brown tone that suits your skin colour,” suggests Sarah. “Or, for extra drama, choose a deep brown with a brick-red tone.” If you’re after a pout that’ll stay put for hours, opt for velvety lipsticks with intense colour payoff. makeup brush 101

The right tools can make a world of difference

Our makeup brushes are the unsung heroes of our beauty routines. Whether you’re a master of barelythere makeup or team contouring, there are some choice tools that every kit needs. Priceline Beauty Advisor Gloria Perez shares her six essential brushes –and a reminder to take care of them, too. “Make sure your brushes are stored correctly,” she says. “Keep them covered to avoid bacteria or dust gathering in the bristles.” Gloria also recommends a deep cleanse of your tools once a week and spot cleaning in between as needed. This is particularly important if you’re acne-prone or using the same brush for more than one product.

Contour

Careful contouring is the key to creating sculpted looks. A tapered round brush is the perfect pick for applying bronzer to your cheeks, forehead and along your jaw. Choose a brush that fits nicely under your cheekbone; almost doing all the work for you.

NYX Professional Makeup Pro Contour Brush, $24.95.

Concealer

When it comes to covering up, a compact brush with tapered bristles is best for precision. Choose synthetic fibres to help set liquid or cream concealer under your eyes, around your nose or over a blemish. A twoin-one choice – dense fibres and a finely pointed tip – can also be used to blend eye shadow into creases.

Models Prefer Dual Purpose 102 Shadow & Concealer Brush, $13.99.

52 Y OU WINTER 2022
Nude By Nature Virgin Blush, $24.95. Revolution Bronzer Reloaded in Holiday Romance, $9. GLORIA PEREZ Priceline Beauty Advisor

Foundation

A quality brush is the key to a flawless finish. Look for a full brush with flexible bristles to gently work foundation into your skin for light, medium or maximum coverage. And duo fibres are a multitasker’s dream, as they buff out liquid foundation and can also be used to softly diffuse loose or pressed powders.

NYX Professional Makeup

Pro Dual Fibre Foundation Brush, $39.95.

Blush

When it comes to blush, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Your formula (cream, powder or liquid) and preferred placement will inform your choice of tool. In general, a blush brush is smaller than a powder brush with longer, softer bristles. If you opt for an angled blush brush, you can use it to apply highlighter and frame your face.

Nude By Nature Angled Blush Brush, $26.95.

Eye shadow

A flat brush with synthetic bristles that mimic natural hair is every shimmer shadow fan’s friend. Look for a medium-sized head that will pick up just the right amount of product and help create defined eyes.

Revlon All Over Shadow Brush, $14.99.

Eyebrows and lashes

Brush up your brows and lashes with a multi-ended tool. Spoolies are perfect for applying pomade, powder or brow soap to keep hairs in place all day long. Don’t dismiss the power of an eyelash comb: it's perfect for grooming extensions or lifted lashes to keep them defined and dirt-free. Natio Eyebrow Brush, $9.95.

Maybelline The City Mini Eyeshadow Palette, $19.95.

Stay motivated this winter with low-impact at-home workouts that are guaranteed to keep you warm

Over the past few years, we’ve embraced at-home workouts in a big way. From HIIT to Zumba and everything in between, we’ve been moving and shaking in our own living rooms, free to sweat as much as we please. We’ve also become creative with our “gym” equipment, using tinned tomatoes as weights, ironing boards as ballet bars and toddlers as medicine balls during lockdowns. With at-home workouts here to stay, try these exercises and feel the burn this winter.

54 Y OU WINTER 2022

Skipping

Skipping is no longer reserved for playground games; it’s a highly effective (and fun) way to stay fit at all ages. Championed by celebs such as Jennifer Garner and Kate Hudson, skipping is a fantastic cardio exercise that works your arms, legs, shoulders and abdominals. Often found as part of boxing training sessions, jumping rope for even three to five minutes per day will get your heart rate up and blood pumping. Try to jump low and land gently on the balls of your feet to cushion your joints and alleviate any pain. Spaces with high ceilings and void of breakable homewares are best for this type of exercise.

Yoga

Roll out your mat and pull on your leggings because it’s time to embrace some Zen. One of the easiest workouts to do at home (all you need is a narrow strip of floor space), yoga is an ancient practice that can offer both physical and mental health benefits. Whether you’re looking to tone up, improve your strength or reduce your stress levels, yoga is a no-brainer. There are countless free apps and online programs to guide you through a variety of different workouts: choose a five-minute meditation session to start the day, or a full-hour program for maximum burn. And if you find yoga a little dull, swap out rhythmic chants for an upbeat playlist, invite a friend to join you, or get your four-legged pal involved.

Barre

We know workouts can get pretty monotonous if you don’t change things up every so often. Enter barre: a low-impact, high-intensity workout that’s fun, challenging and anything but boring. Based around a ballet barre, this exercise technique incorporates elements of ballet, yoga and Pilates to improve your balance, posture, strength and flexibility. Sound appealing? We’re not surprised – barre has exploded around the world as a trendy workout method that shakes things up in the best way possible. You can use a kitchen bench, the back of your sofa or even a balcony railing for balance as you plié your way to a dancer’s body.

Pilates

Increased core strength, improved posture and more flexibility: sign us up. Pilates is ideal for all ages, abilities and fitness levels, meaning there’s no excuse not to give it a whirl. Created in the 1920s by German trainer Joseph Pilates, the method is focused on mobility and movement, combining mat-based exercises with equipment such as resistance bands, foam rollers and fit balls. But don’t fret if you haven’t got all the bells and whistles – a simple yoga mat is all you’ll need to get started and work up a solid sweat. Tune into Instagram Live workouts from your local studio or pull up fan favourites on YouTube for more instructions.

Recovery zone

Take care of your body post-workout with our top recuperation tips.

Hot and cold

If you experience any muscular aches or stiffness after exercising, use a hot water bottle to gently ease tension. Cold packs are ideal for reducing any inflammation or swelling that may arise due to a workout mishap.

1 Sweet Little Things Luxe Fur Hot Water Bottle, $12.99.

2 Medi-Pak Canvas Maxi Pak Large, $13.99.

Heat cream

Massage Deep Heat into sore and achy muscles post-workout for temporary pain relief. Thankfully, low-odour formulas mean you won’t turn heads after you’ve applied the cream.

3 Deep Heat Low Odour Relief 100g, $7.99.

Rehydrate

Use oral rehydration solutions to replenish water and electrolytes lost due to heavy sweating. Ready-to-use formulas are good to have on stand-by if you’re a fan of high-intensity workouts.

4. Hydralyte Ready to Use Orange Flavoured Electrolyte Solution 4 x 250mL, $14.99.

Take a bath

Reward yourself with a luxurious bath after your workout – you’ve earned it. Dissolve magnesium bath salts into your tub to soothe your muscles, decrease inflammation and leave you feeling relaxed.

take the plunge

The thought of icy water and foggy mornings is enough to give most of us cold feet. But as temperatures drop, a growing community of swimming devotees are embracing a wintry splash. From mood-boosting endorphins to a surprising immune response, we’re diving into the benefits of cold-water swimming this winter.

Coined the ‘cold-shock response’, our body’s initial reaction to frosty waters can range from a rapid heart rate to raised blood pressure and quickened, shallow breath. At first glance, this seems contradictory to the supposed health benefits of taking the plunge. But evidence points to advantages that far outweigh this temporary discomfort.

In response to the sudden temperature drop that accompanies a wintry frolic, our white blood cell count is boosted,

priming the body to fight other shock attacks, like viruses or infections. Put simply, the cold spurs our body’s natural defence mechanisms into action. This explains why regular cold-water swimmers are less likely to succumb to winter ailments. Adapting to the discomfort can also decrease our body’s general stress response, making us better equipped to deal with life’s stressors.

The Wim Hof Method – championed by its namesake founder, a Dutch athlete and motivational speaker, is a

physical and mental training program built on meditation, breathing techniques and cold exposure. While we’re not advocating for swimming under ice sheets any time soon (the more extreme side of the program’s approach), the basic principles can be applied to your next swim. As well as helping reduce stress, improve sleep and boost your immune system, regular exposure to cold can speed up your metabolism (as the body works harder to stay warm) and reduce inflammation and pain. A mid-year dip is the perfect choice for anyone with joint sensitivities, as it engages most muscles without any weight-bearing.

You’ve heard of the runner’s high, but what about swimmer’s? Due to a surge of beta-endorphin hormones, swimmers get a similar relaxed euphoria after a few laps. And with cold water supercharging this effect, you can expect to feel calmer and healthier when you resurface.

Phone a friend: Find a mate to swim with this winter or join a social swimming squad. A buddy will keep you motivated and can lend a hand if you find yourself in too deep. Safety in numbers is especially important when it comes to open-water courses.

Warming woes: While it may seem logical to have a steamy shower after a dip, it’s better to let your body warm up slowly. Kate Rew, founder of The Outdoor Swimming Society, says the best way to beat the chill is to have a set of dry clothes and a hot drink ready.

Shake up your winter cooking with recipes that work overtime

Recipes and styling Emma Knowles / Photography Con Poulos

Poached chicken and miso noodle broth

Craving umami? A cosy bowl of noodles

topped with seasonal vegetables might just hit the spot. And leftover poaching liquid can be frozen and used as stock when needed.

5cm-piece ginger, cut into matchsticks

200g shiitake mushrooms, halved or sliced, depending on size

¹/³ cup white miso paste

1 bunch broccolini

300g dried ramen noodles

Prep: 30 mins + 3 hours cooling

Cook: 1 hr

Serves 4

4 wedges roast pumpkin

Thinly sliced spring onion, roasted sesame seeds and sesame oil, to serve

Poached chicken

1 small whole chicken (about 1.3kg)

½ cup soy sauce or tamari

½ bunch spring onions, coarsely chopped

1 head garlic, halved crossways

5cm-piece ginger, thickly sliced

1 To make the poached chicken, place all ingredients in a saucepan that holds the chicken snugly. Add enough cold water to cover generously and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low, cover pan with lid and simmer for 45 minutes. Turn off stove and cool chicken in broth for 3 hours. Remove chicken from poaching liquid (reserving poaching liquid) and use a fork to shred meat. Strain poaching liquid. You can refrigerate poached chicken in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

2 Ladle 4 cups poaching liquid into a saucepan (freeze remaining poaching liquid), add ginger and mushrooms and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Whisk ¼ cup of warmed poaching liquid in a bowl with miso to combine, then add back to saucepan. Add half of the poached chicken and the broccolini and simmer to heat through.

3 Cook noodles in a large saucepan of boiling salted water according to packet instructions. Drain and divide among serving bowls.

4 Ladle chicken, broth and broccolini over noodles. Add a roast pumpkin wedge to each and serve topped with spring onion, sesame seeds and sesame oil.

A little bit of preparation is the key to eating well this winter. Get ahead of dark, cold nights (and avoid the temptation to order in) by stocking your fridge with delicious meals that are designed to go the distance.
Chicken is a lean protein that contains the amino acid tryptophan, which aids the production of serotonin – the ‘feel-good’ hormone.

Warm up A hearty bowl of soup is the perfect antidote to seasonal woes. While the oven is on, roast double the quantity of pumpkin needed for the salad and reserve half (about 1 kg) to make a speedy, silky soup.

• Heat 2 tbsp vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add 1 diced brown onion, 2 crushed garlic cloves, 1 sliced long red chilli and 1 tbsp finely grated ginger and cook for several minutes or until tender. If you have any curry paste on hand, add 1-2 tbsp to the pan at this stage and stir until fragrant.

• Coarsely chop leftover roast pumpkin and add to the pan, along with a 400ml can of coconut milk. Fill coconut milk can twice with hot water and add to pumpkin mixture. Season to taste. Bring to the boil and cook for a further 5-10 minutes to develop the flavours. Squeeze in juice of 1 lime, remove pan from heat and blend mixture with a stick blender, or in batches in a food processor.

• Refrigerate or freeze as required. Drizzle with a little extra coconut milk, scatter with coriander leaves and serve with a wedge of lime.

Roast pumpkin and cauliflower salad

This warm winter salad is anything but boring. Scale the quantities up or down depending on how many people you need to feed, and how much leftovers you’d like to have.

1.2kg Kent pumpkin (about ¼ of a large pumpkin), seeds discarded, cut into wedges

¹/³ cup olive oil

1 tsp ground cumin

Prep: 25 mins

Cook: 30 mins

Serves 4

1 tsp ground coriander

1 tsp smoked paprika

½ cauliflower, cut into florets

1½ cups torn kale

1 lemon, juiced, plus extra lemon wedges, to serve

½ cup mint leaves

½ cup flat-leaf parsley leaves

2 spring onions, thinly sliced

100g Greek-style feta, crumbled

Tahini dressing

½ cup extra-virgin olive oil

2 tbsp tahini

1 lemon, juiced

1 garlic clove, finely chopped

1 tsp ground cumin

Pumpkin hummus

400g canned chickpeas, drained, reserving ½ cup liquid

¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil

2 tbsp tahini

1 lemon, juiced, or to taste

1 garlic clove

1 Preheat oven to 200°C. Place pumpkin in a bowl and toss with 2 tbsp oil and half of the spices. Season to taste and arrange on a large baking-paper lined baking tray. Roast for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown and very tender.

2 Meanwhile, place cauliflower in a bowl and toss with 2 tbsp oil and remaining spices. Season to taste and arrange on a baking-paper lined baking tray. Roast for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown and very tender.

60 Y OU WINTER 2022

3 To make the tahini dressing, whisk ingredients together in a bowl, then thin to a drizzling consistency with 2–3 tbsp hot water, and season to taste.

4 To make the pumpkin hummus, coarsely chop two of the roast pumpkin wedges and combine in a food processor with the remaining ingredients (except the reserved chickpea liquid). Season, then process until smooth, thinning down with some of the chickpea liquid if necessary.

5 Combine kale in a bowl with lemon juice and remaining oil and season to taste. Use your hands to massage the kale until it softens and wilts. Add herbs and spring onion and toss to combine.

6 To serve, spread pumpkin hummus on a serving platter, top with roast pumpkin, roast cauliflower, kale mixture and feta. Drizzle with tahini dressing and serve with lemon wedges.

Pumpkin is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which can help your body fight infections and viruses.

Cauliflower

and kale ragu with linguine

A vegetarian take on a winter classic, this rich ragu is packed with flavour. And it freezes well, so it’s a good idea to make a double batch and store in airtight containers for when you need an easy dinner.

2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

80g butter, diced

1 small brown onion, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 small carrot, coarsely chopped

Prep: 20 mins

Cook: 1 hr

Serves 4

200g Swiss brown mushrooms, coarsely chopped

½ head of cauliflower, coarsely chopped (reserving leaves for later use)

1 tbsp thyme leaves

1 tsp smoked paprika

1 lemon, rind finely grated, ½ juiced

400g can cherry tomatoes

¹/³ cup tomato paste

1 tbsp porcini powder (optional)

1 cup shredded kale

350g fresh linguine

60g finely grated parmesan

1 Heat oil and half of the butter in a large saucepan over medium-high heat, add onion and garlic and cook for 4-5 minutes or until tender. Meanwhile, place carrot in a food processor and process until finely chopped. Add to the onion mixture and cook for another 4-5 minutes or until softened.

2 Place mushrooms in a food processor and process until finely chopped, then add to onion mixture. Repeat with cauliflower –you’ll need to do the cauliflower in batches – and cook, stirring occasionally, for 6–8 minutes or until cauliflower is softened.

Stir in thyme, paprika and lemon rind.

3 Add tomatoes, tomato paste, porcini powder (if using) and 1½ cups water, season generously with salt and pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 25–30 minutes or until thick, rich and reduced.

4 Add kale to pan and simmer for 3-4 minutes or until tender. Add lemon juice to taste and stir to combine. If not using immediately, transfer to airtight containers and refrigerate for up to 1 week, or freeze for up to 2 months.

5 To serve, cook pasta in a large saucepan of boiling salted water according to packet instructions. Drain, reserving ½ cup cooking liquid.

6 Meanwhile, heat half of the cauliflower ragu in a large frying pan over mediumhigh heat, add remaining butter and half of the parmesan, stir to combine and emulsify. Add a squeeze of lemon juice to taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Add cooked pasta and reserved cooking liquid and toss to combine. Serve sprinkled with remaining parmesan.

Pack

it up Take your ragu leftovers to new heights by building a delicious rice bowl for lunch the next day.

• Cook ¾ cup brown rice in a saucepan of boiling water for 20 minutes or until tender. Drain, rinse and cool. Alternatively you can use a pre-cooked brown rice and quinoa sachet and follow the packet instructions. Place rice in a portable (and microwavable) lunch bowl with a few spoonfuls of leftover cauliflower ragu and scatter with feta.

• Store your toppings separately for optimum freshness. Try sliced avocado, shredded cabbage, lime, a dash of hot sauce and a handful of corn chips for a Mexican twist. Or, take a Middle Eastern spin, adding canned chickpeas, cherry tomatoes, fresh herbs like mint and parsley, lemon and a drizzle of tahini dressing (p60).

• Heat the bowl in a microwave, then serve with toppings of your choice.

your questions… ?

Q: No matter what I eat, I end up bloated, gassy and with awful cramps. My friend says it could be IBS, what can I do to stop feeling so ill?

A: Approximately one in five Australians will experience the unpleasant symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, the best course of action is to make an appointment with your doctor and discuss your symptoms. They will be able to arrange tests that can help rule out anything more serious. Herbal remedies can help alleviate some of the discomfort you’re experiencing while you get to the root of the problem.

?

Q: I’m in my mid-60s and suffer from frequent UTIs.

How can I avoid getting them?

A:

Unfortunately urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common occurrence after menopause, as a decline in circulating oestrogen causes changes in the urinary tract that make you more vulnerable to infection. It’s important to drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to flush bacteria out. A cranberry supplement can also help to reduce the occurrence of infection.

3. Ural Daily Cranberry 90 Capsules, $34.95.

Q: Every winter I suffer from acid reflux. How can I stop it?

A: A wintry diet might be the reason for your recurring reflux, as acidic foods and meals that are high in fat can aggravate digestive disorders. Steer clear of too much citrus, heavy tomato sauces, coffee, cheese and chocolate. Spicy foods or large meals can also cause distress. It’s best to speak with your doctor about prescription medications that can help to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Q: Why should I buy an at-home blood pressure monitor? They’re so expensive!

A:

If your GP has diagnosed you with high blood pressure, they might have also recommended you invest in an at-home monitor. When you’re in the doctor’s office, their reading will only show your numbers at that moment. An at-home monitor lets you check more often, which will give you a better idea of your true blood pressure. The best way to know for sure if you have high blood pressure is to measure and record your results several times a day over a few months.

A:

It sounds like you might be sensitive or allergic to latex. If you’ve ever noticed swollen lips after blowing up a balloon and suffer from other allergic diseases (asthma), allergic rhinitis (hay fever), or eczema, it’s worth looking into alternative contraceptive options. Non-latex condoms that are made with polyisoprene offer the same protection against STIs and pregnancy as latex condoms.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????

Wet or productive coughs bring up phlegm and mucus. For this type of cough, you’ll want a “chesty” syrup, powered by an expectorant, that works to loosen and expel mucus from the airways. If you’re suffering from a persistent tickle, a dry cough syrup or suppressant will work to block your cough reflex for temporary relief.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Why am I still suffering from allergy symptoms?

A:

Unfortunately for allergy sufferers, spring isn’t the only season of concern.

During winter we’re exposed to indoor allergens like dust mites, pet dander and mould spores. Keeping your house clean and free from triggers is the number one priority when you’re spending more time at home. Dust with a damp cloth (to avoid spreading particles), wash your bedding and any soft furnishings regularly (it takes a 60°C cycle to kill dust mites, however, a eucalyptus wash can help when laundering more delicate materials) and try to avoid damp as much as possible (use extraction fans in the bathroom and kitchen or invest in a dehumidifier). Over-the-counter medications will also help keep symptoms at bay.

elements of you

An astrological guide to keeping well during the chilly season

With each of the 12 signs of the zodiac falling into one of four elements (fire, earth, air and water), knowing which one rules your sign can help unpack your nature. It’s time to tap into your primary qualities as you focus on wellbeing throughout the colder months.

Fire

Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Passionate, enthusiastic and dynamic, fire signs look to new experiences to keep them energised. Always in search of adventure, you crave movement and aren’t afraid to get physical, so feel the burn and discover a fitness routine (page 54) to keep you ignited during the colder months. But while your blazing personality can lead to an exciting life, this ferocity tends towards over-stimulation if you’re not cautious. Winter is the perfect time to cool off and let your mind unwind. Don’t be afraid to say no to new projects, clear your calendar in favour of weekends at home and cut back on the caffeine. Resting now will let you shine brighter come spring.

These scorching shades spark the flamboyance that a fire sign craves. Australis

Fire Nights Eyeshadow Palette 22.5g, $25.95.

Earth Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Grounded, loyal and practical, earth energy appreciates routine and rituals. Winter is the perfect time to recalibrate if the first half of the year has left you feeling a bit depleted. Be inspired to get creative in the kitchen with recipes (page 58) that make meal prep less of a chore. Set aside the money you would have spent on buying lunch or ordering takeaway and treat yourself to a little indulgence as a reward for healthy habits. With colder days comes the temptation to lean into your slothful side, and while we’re all for getting cosy with a good book or the latest Netflix series, don’t dismiss the power Mother Nature has over your sign. Rug up, get outside for a walk and breathe in the fresh air if you feel yourself falling into a seasonal funk.

This woody floral fragrance mirrors an earth sign’s grounded energy. AllSaints Sunset Riot EDP 100mL, $125.

Air Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Cerebral and communicative, air signs are known for their intellectual personalities. You thrive on social connection and feel alive when having thoughtful conversations with your nearest and dearest – whether that’s in real life or virtually. But sometimes you feel scattered or frantic, especially when you spend too much time in your own head. Take this as a reminder to stop scrolling on your phone and slow down (page 14). If you find yourself with pent-up energy (read: restless and bored), indulge your desire for new interests and commit to a winter-friendly hobby, such as learning to paint or knitting a scarf. Meditation doesn’t always involve chanting, after all.

Making time for self-care leaves room for air signs to collect their thoughts. Cetaphil Optimal Hydration Body Lotion 473mL, $35.49.

Water Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Emotionally charged and somewhat mysterious, water energy is free-flowing. The most sensitive souls of the zodiac, signs ruled by this fluid element have a focus on their mind-body-spirit connection. You’re deeply intuitive and show loyalty and compassion to those you love. Sometimes you hold onto things a little too long, so use this time to let go of the past and invest energy in your artistic side. Having a home base that soothes you is important. Embrace your nesting tendencies and do some DIY, or splash out on creature comforts that make you feel calm. Just remember, retail therapy is no substitute for cognitive behavioural therapy. If you find yourself overwhelmed or anxious, taking an icy winter dip (page 56) might help balance out those feelings.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
