This autumn, comfort is top of mind. As the first leaves fall, it’s a reminder for us to slow down; to care for our minds and our bodies. For me, that means walking every single day. It’s the way I unwind, keep fit and take a little bit of time for that all-important mindfulness.
Autumn is a time to reflect, too. Recently, I’ve been taking on exciting new challenges professionally while juggling family life, and I’m realising that the older I get, the younger I feel. It’s so liberating! In fact, if I could tell my younger self anything, it would be to stop worrying so much about what everyone else thinks and just go for it. How great is it to have the wisdom and confidence to ask, “What do I really want?” before considering the needs and wants of those around us. There’s an inner strength that comes with age and it’s a superpower.
I hope this issue of YOU – and your next visit to Priceline (see you there!) – inspires you to find confidence and comfort in your own skin; to take care of yourself and celebrate your uniqueness. This season, I encourage you to rediscover you. Imagine the words that really capture who you are. I’ll go

While author and teacher Alison Brahe-Daddo may have been blindsided by menopause, she has good things to say about life on the other side
“I put my own self-care at the bottom of the list and felt isolated and alone.”
Meeting Alison Brahe-Daddo for the first time feels a little like deja vu – it’s tough to shake the feeling you’ve met her before. It’s more than just her warm smile and laid-back nature. For anyone over 40, it’s likely the fact that she graced the covers of our favourite magazines and fashion campaigns in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Then, in a fairytale move, she married dreamboat actor Cameron Daddo and moved to Los Angeles. And 25 years later, with three children and a teaching career under her belt, Alison and Cam moved back home to Australia. However, it’s fair to say it wasn’t with the grounded sense of calm she displays at our YOU magazine cover shoot; her international move coincided with the beginning of a hormonal shift that comes for so many of us. One that is not discussed often enough and, in Alison’s case, came with a set of gruelling symptoms that caught her off guard.
“Looking back, it started with a shift in my cycle. I started experiencing symptoms, including dry eyes, joint pain and sleeplessness, none of which seemed connected. Then came unexplained weight gain, despite my diet and exercise routine not changing,” recalls Alison, who had only heard the word perimenopause once in her life at this point.
“One doctor told me to eat less and exercise more, which made me so angry. That was another symptom... but also a justified reaction,” she adds.
To cope with what she now knows were the symptoms of perimenopause – the hormonal stage before menopause that can last years – she did what she’d always done during challenging times. “I did a lot of compartmentalising,” says Alison. “I did a lot of crying behind closed doors. Like many of those I’ve since spoken with about menopause, I put my own self-care at the bottom of the list and felt isolated and alone.” Trying to white-knuckle her way through it only added to the mental load, which combined with sleeplessness, resulting in anxiety and depression. Alison started writing a book out of desperation (the must-read manifesto Queen Menopause: Finding Your Majesty in the Mayhem) and realised this sense of her body, mind and life falling apart had as much to do with menopause as it did with her move home.
Since writing her book and exchanging stories with others, Alison has learned that her experience is not a singular one. “We’re so used to dealing with discomfort – from period pain and having children to aching bodies and swinging moods from our hormonal cycle – that we get really good at setting aside our needs,” she says. “We’re told that so much of our value comes from caring for others that there’s often shame in really caring for ourselves and putting our needs ahead of our families, friends and work demands.”
Menopause, Alison realised, is something you can’t ignore if you want to get through it in one piece. “When you’re alone with your symptoms and not getting support, the pressure is confusing and crushing,” admits Alison, who says talking to friends and finding a doctor and a naturopath who understood menopause helped. “Once I understood what was happening to my body and mind, everything I was going through had an explanation. But that was bittersweet because it was like, ‘Okay, I now know what this is but what do I do? Because this is brutal.’”
As she sought more information, Alison quickly realised there was a clear divide in the narrative around menopause. “It was either a social death sentence – the end of sexuality and being visible and really mattering in society – or something you came out the other side of feeling more empowered than ever.” For Alison, it was only ever going to be the latter.
Today, Alison is well and truly on the other side of her sevenyear perimenopause and menopause journey, and feels so much better. Which is not to say she has it all figured out. “I had to learn to put my own needs higher up on my list of priorities. Now I ask, ‘What do I want?’ before I check in with everyone else. I learned the hard way that you can’t take care of anyone else if you’re not taking care of yourself,” she says. “I’m finally living life on my own terms.” The cliché, Alison admits, is a hard-earned lesson.
To learn more about Alison’s journey, read her book Queen Menopause: Finding Your Majesty in the Mayhem or listen to her podcast Separate Bathrooms, with her husband, Cameron Daddo.
One major change has been with her inner voice – she’s much kinder to herself now. “I’m not saying I’m madly in love with all the physical changes I went through but I have reached body acceptance,” she says. “Do I love having cellulite from neck to knee? No. But that’s okay, too. I don’t hate my body. I don’t hate the weight. It’s just what it is right now. If I get to body love, great. But if I remain here I won’t feel ashamed. Like many women, I’m sick of being told how I should feel, look and behave, especially when it comes to ageing. Enough already!”
The message Alison has for those in the throes of perimenopause and menopause: “Hang in there. And get support; talk to your family as well as a doctor who understands menopause and will take the time to help you manage symptoms,” she says. “I feel so healthy and vital and grateful for the balance I have in my body and mind. I promise, there really is light at the end of the tunnel.”
“Once I understood what was happening to my body and mind, ever ything I was going through had an explanation.”

Embrace your changing skin, hair and nails with Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw’s mature beauty masterclass
Take care
Set the scene for a bold statement lip this autumn with a hydrating balm.
Try: The Kind Collective Hydrating Lip Elixir, $14.95.
As we age, our skin, hair and makeup goals evolve. “Our skin’s elasticity, tone and hydration changes, and so does the texture of our hair,” explains Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw. It’s natural and a change that should be embraced. In this step-by-step guide, Sarah reveals her top hydrating skincare, naturally luminous makeup and high-shine hair and nail care, so you can support your body – and feel fabulous – at every age.
As our levels of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid change, our skin can lose firmness and become drier. “Hydrating skincare is a great way to ‘juice’ it back up,” says Sarah. To start, apply exfoliating glycolic acid or retinol to smooth your skin’s surface overnight. Sarah suggests a hyaluronic acid serum and skincareinfused primer in the morning to plump fine lines and prep for applying makeup.
1. L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Filler 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Serum 30mL, $54.99. 2. Boost Lab Retinol Night Renewal Serum 30mL, $29.95. 3. The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution 240mL, $20.60.
For a natural-looking complexion, strategically apply a base underneath the eyes and around the nose to help brighten the appearance of skin. By polishing a sheer layer of foundation or concealer into your skin with a buffing brush, “you even out the skin tone and let your skin shine through”, explains Sarah. Add a rosy cream blush to the apples of your cheeks, subtle definition with a cream bronzer and highlighter, and a volumising brow gel to finish your fresh daytime look.
A hydrating foundation is all you need to give your complexion a boost.
Try: Covergirl + Olay Simply Ageless 3-in-1 Foundation 30mL, $27.95.
Sarah has a few secret weapons to create the illusion of wide-open eyes and fuller lashes. By etching waterproof eyeliner along the lashes, adding a wash of universally flattering bronze eyeshadow and enhancing your lashes with mascara, Sarah says you can define and lift your eyes in just three speedy steps.
“Just like our hair, our nails can benefit from a little extra care,” says Sarah, who recommends adding a nail hardener to your manicure routine. A daily application of cuticle oil is also a must to keep your nails hydrated and flexible, and to create a relaxing evening routine. And don’t forget a long-lasting lacquer to keep nails looking chic and polished (we love a glossy burgundy hue for an autumnal mood).
“While grey hair is beautiful, these strands can feel coarse and are prone to breakage,” explains Sarah. This means a little more TLC can go a long way. Safeguard your hair with a heat protectant, repair and soften with a two-step nourishing treatment and use a lightweight finishing spray to add shine. Your hair will feel full and healthy – and your shimmering tresses will shine even brighter.

This autumn, say goodbye to your hair woes and hello to your healthiest locks yet
From over-styling and harsh chemicals to hormonal changes and lifestyle stressors, many factors stand in the way of healthy hair. With the help of Priceline Beauty Advisor Michelle Measey and Hask ambassador and Hollywood stylist Lori McCoy-Bell, we share the expert tips and nourishing formulas that will help hydrate and strengthen your strands.
300mL,
Shedding hair is natural: as new hairs grow, others fall out. However, while a few loose strands on your pillowcase is normal – most people lose between 50 and 100 hairs per day – if you start losing clumps or noticing bald patches, there may be cause for concern. Hair thinning can be the result of external factors, such as harsh products, dyes and even hairstyles, that place particular stress on the hair. Over time, these cause damage to the follicles and hair shaft, making your strands more prone to breakage and shedding.
The first step in addressing hair loss of this kind is to overhaul your routine. “Small changes can make all the difference,” says Michelle. Swap chemical-laden products for nourishing ingredients to encourage the hair follicles to function to their best ability. If you regularly use heat styling tools, always apply a heat defence formula and towel-dry hair first to minimise the blow-drying time. Loose ponytails and silk scrunchies can help, as well.
Significant hair loss can also point to various internal conditions. “Women aged between 30 and 60 are most susceptible to hair loss due to the hormonal changes associated with postpartum and menopause,” says Michelle. Both conditions are associated with a decrease in the body’s supply of oestrogen and, while postpartum hair loss usually stabilises within six to 12 months, menopausal hair loss can be long-lasting. To give your hair the best chance at growth in these stages, Michelle suggests a targeted approach: “Look for dietary supplements boosted with vitamins and minerals essential for hair growth, such as vitamin D, zinc and iron.”
In pursuit of healthier hair, an increasing number of women are leaving heat tools behind in favour of their natural locks. It makes sense but often requires a new approach. For a smooth transition, Lori recommends switching to product formulas that suit your specific hair type. “There are products offered for all textures, including dry, oily, thin, thick and frizzy.”
For thick, curly hair, double down on the moisture by adding deep conditioning products. “This will promote your natural curls while also banishing flyaways and frizz,” says Michelle. Then, lock in curls with a finishing spray, cream or mousse. For fine, straight hair, a lightweight serum will add shine without weighing it down. And for second-day hair, dry shampoo can boost volume and tackle oily roots.
Like skin, the texture of our hair changes as we age. “Over the years, hair can become dry and lacklustre,” says Michelle. While we can’t reverse this process, introducing emollient conditioners and masks to your haircare routine can slow the effect of these changes, making it easier to embrace your new texture.
Cooler temperatures and lower levels of humidity can lead to frizz, breakages and dryness of the hair and scalp. Telltale signs that your hair is in need of some TLC include a loss of shine, persistent tangles and split ends.
To restore damaged hair, Michelle starts at the roots. “A gentle scalp exfoliation will remove dry, dead skin and encourage healthy growth,” she says. Next, show strands some love with ultra-nourishing formulas. Lori applies treatments liberally from root to tip then secures hair into a topknot while it absorbs. “This works miracles,” she says.
For maintenance, avoid irritants like harsh sun, chlorine and heat. Michelle says to also keep in mind that while the right formulas are essential for hair repair, a holistic approach is also vital to achieving luscious locks. A diet rich in fatty acids – found in foods such as salmon, chia seeds and avocado – as well as antioxidants (including vitamins A, C and E, and zinc) can help supply the body with the nutrients needed to grow longer, stronger hair.

The simple action of putting on a colourful lip can be therapeutic. “It’s a small change but the added colour can have a drastic effect on your self-confidence,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Swikriti ‘Kitty’ Gurung. “You’ll feel empowered and energetic – and you’ll receive plenty of compliments!” To pick a flattering new shade, consider your skin’s undertones. “Lipsticks with peach or orange undertones suit warmer complexions,” says Swikriti, “while berry and burgundy tones complement cooler complexions.” So, swipe on a beginner-friendly coral hue, berry-inspired balm or fuchsia lipstick and embrace the season’s bright new mood.
With a few updates, you can keep your complexion looking and feeling fresh this autumn
As the seasons change, so, too, does the texture and tone of our skin. Cooler temperatures, dry winds and less sunshine can leave our complexion feeling parched and looking a little lacklustre. In turn, the foundation formulas and shades that worked wonders during the summer months no longer feel like your perfect match. We asked Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw to take us inside her flawless complexion kit and share her top application tips.
Counteracting dryness begins long before you apply foundation. “A healthylooking complexion during the colder months starts with doubling down on the hydration in your skincare,” says Sarah. Prep your face and neck with a super-hydrating moisturiser to boost the skin’s natural defence barrier. And an eye cream will add an extra layer of protection to this delicate area while also preventing foundation and concealer from settling into fine lines.
1. AHC Age Defense Real Eye Cream 40mL, $45. 2. Skin Proud Sorbet Skin Everyday Jelly Moisturiser 50mL, $25.99.
“A primer is your foundation’s best defence against the elements,” says Sarah. Harsh winds, indoor heating and lower humidity all deplete skin of moisture, which affects the longevity of foundation. “Dry skin ‘drinks up’ the moisture in our foundation, which leaves skin looking bare and uneven after only a few hours,” says Sarah. Remedy this by adding a primer packed with nourishing ingredients to your routine. This acts as a barrier between your skin and makeup, giving you beautiful, long-lasting results. Sarah
loves formulas boosted with hyaluronic acid: “It attracts up to 1000 times its weight in water so skin is smooth, soft and luminous.”
3. E.L.F. Halo Glow Liquid Filter 31.5mL in Medium, $35. 4. Max Factor Miracle Prep Primer Illuminating + Hydrating 30mL, $29.95. 5. NYX Professional Makeup The Marsh Mellow Primer 30mL, $29.95.
Less time outdoors often means a change in skin tone and foundation shades that no longer suit. Sarah says the solution is to have three shades of your favourite formula at hand: a lighter option, a medium shade and one that’s slightly darker than your natural skin tone. In cooler months, find your ideal match by combining the medium and light shades. Or, for an easy hack, try shade-altering drops. Then, to colour-match like a pro, Sarah recommends focusing on your cheeks. “The skin on your body is usually a little darker so it’s important to match foundation to your complexion, and then blend really well along the jaw to ensure a smooth transition.”
6. Australis Match Maker Shade Adjusting Drops 18mL in Lightening, $20.95.
The final step in mastering your autumn complexion is perfecting your finish. While matte formulas are great for the excess oil brought on by humidity and high temperatures, they may aggravate and accentuate dryness caused by the autumn elements. Opt for dewy sheens and radiant satins for long-lasting, ultra-hydrating coverage. Up the ante with formulas that have added skincare benefits – ingredients such as jojoba seed oil, vitamin E and
will nourish dehydrated skin, leaving it feeling as good as it looks.

Sarah Laidlaw’s browboosting routine
To reveal your brows’ full potential, Sarah suggests you start by brushing them up and outwards. Next, reach for a pair of precision tweezers to clean up any stray hairs from under each brow, then gently glide a facial razor above the tops of the brows to remove peach fuzz.
Try: Manicare Ultimate Slant Tweezers, $14.99. Revlon Face Defuzzer 2 Pack, $14.99.
“With age, our eyebrows get finer and gaps may appear,” says Sarah. But you can make your brows look fuller and amplify their natural shape with a little colour. A tint will deepen your brows and make fine, fair hairs visible. For a more defined effect, Sarah suggests strokes of a pomade to mimic individual hairs.
Try: 1000 Hour Lash & Brow Dye, $24.99. Maybelline Tattoo Brow Pomade in Dark Brown, $23.99.
“A natural part of the ageing process is that our brows start to sit lower on our faces. So brushing the hairs up will give the illusion of lifted brows,” says Sarah, who favours an on-trend lamination gel. By ‘laminating’ brows into place, the strong-hold gel and specially designed brush create full, sculpted brows that will last all day.

Beauty sleep is far from fiction – it may just be the science-backed secret to unlocking your best skin yet
Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. When we close our eyes, we enter a regenerative state. “Our bodies work through the night to undo damage from the day,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Swikriti ‘Kitty’ Gurung, “so your night routine needs to support the repair process.” To help us understand our skin’s PM routine, Head of Science Research at No7 Beauty Company Dr Mike Bell breaks down the science behind our sleep and how we can optimise skincare for glowing skin, night after night.
The circadian rhythm is our body’s 24-hour cycle. It signals the release of the sleep hormone melatonin and, as Dr Mike explains, “there’s growing evidence that our skin is under circadian control. The processes that protect our skin from the sun are active during the day, while repair and renewal is stimulated overnight.” The catch? “Our circadian rhythm can be disrupted by modern life and poor sleep quality,” says Dr Mike.
Research has shown that late bedtimes and a reduction in sleep from eight to four hours a night can negatively impact skin’s hydration, texture, tone and elasticity – and crow’s feet and frown lines may even appear deeper. Chronic poor sleep is also reported to contribute to acne and diminish the skin’s moisture barrier function, “which makes skin dehydrated and slower to recover after physical damage,” explains Dr Mike. But rest assured, one of the most effective solutions is also the most simple: commit to a regular bedtime and eight hours of sleep.
For anyone with sensitive or inflamed skin, good sleep really can help your complexion feel more comfortable. “Research shows that our skin’s regeneration processes are optimised during the early hours of the morning, when most of us are sleeping,” says Dr Mike. On the flip side, when our body isn’t well rested or repairing to its best ability, long-term inflammation can lead to breakouts, compromise the skin barrier and degrade collagen. In addition to getting enough shut-eye, you can support this healing process by packing your skincare routine with vitamin C, healing mineral zinc and anti-inflammatory extracts, like cica.
Apply retinol at
This is because sunlight reduces its efficacy. And always follow with a moisturiser, then SPF in the morning – even if it was a retinol-free night. Start gradually Ramp up usage from once or twice a week to nightly use over four to six weeks.
Support your skin
Ingredients like cica and licorice will calm and strengthen your skin’s moisture barrier.
“Under the influence of light, our circadian rhythm facilitates the release of hormones like melatonin,” says Dr Mike. He adds that while melatonin is the hormone that puts us to sleep, it works double time as an antioxidant to counteract the ageing impact of DNA damage to our skin cells – and can even improve the appearance of sun-induced dark spots, just like a brightening serum would.
The only problem is that constant exposure to screens can throw this process out of sync. A simple fix: by limiting blue light from your phone, laptop and TV before bed and cutting back on caffeine, you can optimise your bedtime routine to boost your melatonin production. These small changes won’t just benefit your sleep but the clarity of your skin, too.
Another important consideration is whether you’re optimising after-hours repair by applying ingredients that heal. “Retinol is my number one night-time skincare ingredient,” says Swikriti. And Dr Mike adds: “Retinol gives skin cells a rejuvenating reboot. By increasing cell renewal, retinol improves the appearance of wrinkles, evens tone and leaves skin feeling firmer and smoother.”
Another way Dr Mike says that you can maximise your skin’s renewal at night and soften the appearance of fine lines is by never forgetting the importance of hydration. “By locking in your routine with a nighttime moisturiser – ideally formulated with calming niacinamide, barrierstrengthening ceramides or hydrating hyaluronic acid – you can improve barrier resilience and moisturisation,” he says. Whether you’re experiencing fine lines and wrinkles, breakouts or pigmentation, healthy and hydrated skin will allow active ingredients to achieve better results.
If you’re new to retinol, Dr Mike recommends starting low and slow. Add No7 Pure Retinol Night Cream ($61.99) to your routine every other night for two to four weeks, then gradually incorporate a more concentrated serum for heightened results. “But,” he reminds us, “retinol also increases your skin’s sensitivity to the sun so make sure you use SPF every day as well.”
results. “But,” he reminds us, “retinol

Sleeping masks are a staple in Korean beauty routines – and for good reason.
“They’re like an intense night cream,” explains Swikriti. “They’re a great way to pamper and rehydrate your skin.” To maximise moisture and repair your skin’s moisture barrier, Swikriti recommends applying a sleeping mask containing hyaluronic acid, niacinamide or vitamin E two to three nights a week, especially on nights you’re using retinol.
“Your night-time routine should help your skin’s repair process – and it shouldn’t feel like a chore,” Swikriti says. So, stick to these five streamlined steps.

While you’re no doubt well-versed in the benefits of having vitamin C on your dinner plate, the hardworking antioxidant deserves a spot in your skincare routine, too. With the help of Priceline Beauty Advisor Michelle Measey, we delve into the science behind antioxidants and share the vitamin C-infused formulas that are worth adding to your preventative skincare line-up.
Our skin is regularly exposed to environmental aggressors, such as pollution, UV rays and dust, which increase the production of free radicals. At a molecular level, these free radicals damage otherwise healthy cells. In the case of skin, they accelerate the natural ageing process, giving rise to fine lines, wrinkles, sagging and dark spots.
Enter antioxidants. These are naturally occurring compounds that can act as a protective barrier when applied topically, helping neutralise free radicals and prevent them from damaging the skin’s surface. One of the most coveted antioxidants is vitamin C. Offering an impressive defence against free radicals as well as improving the overall appearance of the complexion, it’s a great way to supercharge your skincare.
In addition to being a protective powerhouse, vitamin C has the ability to inhibit the production of melanin. “This is the pigment responsible for the colour of our skin,” explains Michelle. A daily application of vitamin C not only works to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation caused by sun exposure but it can also help prevent these from forming in the first place. The result: a luminous, lit-from-within glow.
Vitamin C is also linked with the body’s collagen supply. “When applied topically, vitamin C stimulates collagen production, while also keeping our existing collagen supply healthy,” Michelle explains. For your plumpest complexion yet, look to formulas that combine vitamin C with the hydrating, anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin E.
Your DNA accounts for about 60 per cent of how your skin ages, so customising the antioxidants in your routine to your skin’s individual needs is a no-brainer. And the smartest way to do it is to be guided by a comprehensive at-home DNA test kit. Available at Priceline for $89, the Know Your Skin myDNA Skin Profile Genetic Test will inform you about everything from collagen depletion and wrinkles to skin texture and age spots, helping you prevent the signs of ageing with easy-to-understand, science-backed results.
Protect and perfect your skin with these vitamin C-infused products
Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Sunscreens are only one component of sun protection. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Frequent use and re-application in accordance with directions is required for effective sun protection.
“When applied topically, vitamin C keeps our collagen supply healthy.”
Her Instagram posts – reminding her 200,000 followers that “Your skin does not define you,” and “We are worth more than our appearance” – are refreshing on a platform that often favours filters over factual depictions. Having struggled with acne on and off since she was a teenager, Olivia understands the importance of letting others know they’re not alone. “Acne affects your confidence so much,” she says. “You think people are only looking at that when they look at you, that they’re only looking at your blemishes and your flaws. I want others to know that it’s not just them; to help people see that breakouts are normal and everyone goes through them.”
As a model, presenter and former Miss Universe Australia, Olivia Molly Rogers is known for her breathtaking beauty. But rather than perpetuating a myth of perfection, Olivia has been sharing her ongoing battle with acne on social media in an attempt to destigmatise the condition and encourage skin positivity.
Part of Olivia’s approach to being authentic and upfront is avoiding filters, which she says can do more harm than good – even when you’re the one applying the special effects. “I realised that filters were making me feel worse about myself,” says the mental health champion and author of Find Your Light, a book about learning to embrace yourself. “There’s a misconception that putting a filter on makes you feel better but all it does is stop you from feeling happy in your skin. And if you then have a photo taken without a filter you think, ‘Oh God, I don’t look good enough’ – you’re getting used to that blurred effect, or whatever it is that you’re putting on the picture.
“If I’m having a bad skin moment or a bad body image moment, putting on comfy clothes and making myself feel good really helps. And I make sure I’m eating good, nutritious foods, drinking lots of water and getting enough sleep.”

Not only do you have that comparison with other people but you have this comparison with yourself – a version of yourself that doesn’t actually exist.”
Olivia admits that dealing with problem skin can at times feel allconsuming. The key, she says, is self-acceptance, as well as finding a skincare routine that works for you. “There are so many different factors that could be causing your acne and you can drive yourself crazy trying to figure it out,” she says. “For me, the best thing has been getting the help of professionals. And just trying not to overthink it. Sometimes, you’re panicking so you try a million different formulas, and all that does is strip your skin barrier and make things worse. Also, as hard as it is because you look at your face every day, try not to obsess over it, because nothing is permanent – it will go away eventually.”
While Olivia is quick to say that all skin is different and what has worked for her may not work for someone else, she’s happy to share what her current routine looks like. “I’ve really stripped it back,” she says. “My dermatologist recommends not cleansing in the morning so I just splash my face with water and use my morning products. And I always apply sunscreen.” At night, Olivia takes her makeup off with micellar water, then uses a cleanser, noting, “tbh’s Acne Hack formulas have been amazing for my skin.” The key for Olivia has been using less actives and going back to basics.
Olivia has experienced an outpouring of support from her online community since she started speaking openly about her skin. “I get messages almost every day – people are invested and want to keep up with the skin journey. It broke down a barrier between me and them, and reminded them that what you see online is not always what it really is.”

Priceline Ambassador Ita Buttrose is ageing well, ageing strong and rewriting the rules – one bicep curl at a time
For journalist and TV personality Ita Buttrose, age has brought a new strength, clarity and sense of purpose. And with her quick-witted sense of humour, Ita proclaims: “I am who I am and what you see is what you get” – one of her many life lessons that we can all take to heart.
“When I was younger, I was guilty of taking my health for granted,” admits Ita. “But ageing well is entirely up to me. Years ago, I came across the book Strong Women Stay Young by Miriam E. Nelson and Sarah Wernick and it made so much sense to me.”
Under the guidance of a trainer, she has committed to her health and regularly attends the gym for weight training sessions. This new approach has taught Ita to take responsibility for her health – and proven just how important exercise is to stay strong and sharp.
“My body needs regular physical exercise and my brain needs to be mentally challenged,” she explains. With the help of her trainer, Ita’s exercise routine combines upper body and leg strengthening exercises with balance work. And this newfound passion is “one of the smartest things I’ve ever done,” she shares.
“I think exercise has increased my zest for living.”
“I believe you have to be lucky to be old – not everyone makes it to older age,” Ita reminds us. And, while ageing is part of life’s journey, “that doesn’t mean we have to be old”. With a strong sense of self, she says “I’ve never let other people’s negativity influence my thinking – and I’ve never let my age determine if I have the right skills or ability to do the things I want to do.”
It’s a seemingly simple act but it’s an incredibly powerful frame of mind, which Ita credits to age itself.
“Age brings with it both confidence and a better sense of direction. I feel better equipped to relax and enjoy life,” she shares. And to accept the emotional, health and lifestyle changes ageing brings, Ita’s most revolutionary advice is one very simple word: “No.” Now, she says, “I am more comfortable choosing the things I want to do and saying no to the things that I don’t. I don’t fret about the things I can’t do and take pleasure in the things that I can.”
“One ageing myth is that older people are ‘past it’; that their knowledge and wisdom are worthless,” says Ita, who instead declares: “Older and bolder – that’s my goal.” Quoting a beloved proverb, she agrees that: “The death of an older person is like the loss of a library. So much of our older citizens’ wisdom and knowledge is unused – to the detriment of our way of life.”
Ita’s words of advice for the younger generations? “Listen up.” It’s a wakeup call for Australia and a call to arms for anyone who feels lost in their later years.
“I’m a great believer in purpose,” says Ita. It’s why she creates something to look forward to each morning and is “probably why retirement is not a word in my vocabulary”, she adds.
If you’re feeling unsure of yourself, know you’re not alone. “A lack of confidence is more common than many women realise,” shares Ita, who adds that it might be a good idea to consult your GP for advice. Talking to trusted friends can be helpful, too. “Socialise with people who make you happy and stop trying to please everyone,” she advises. “Don’t say ‘sorry’ all the time. So many women say sorry when there’s no need,” says Ita. And, in the quest to find your next direction, she echoes the need to take it slowly and be kind to yourself. “I’ve never feared life’s detours and surprises – or its destination. I take each day as it comes.”
A journalist who’s spent her life’s work examining the world and sharing the stories of Australian women, Ita leaves us with this pearl of wisdom: “I believe the purpose of life is, in fact, to lead a life of purpose.”
“Older people haven’t lost their zest for life or their marbles.
The collective knowledge of Australia’s elders needs to be respected.”
Bloated? Unwell? Your gut health could be the problem – and the solution
Most of us have received the memo: gut health matters. A balance of good and bad bacteria in our gut microbiome is crucial to staying well, sleeping deeply and even regulating our mood. But life can get in the way. A range of factors, including antibiotics, artificial sweeteners, processed foods and stress, can throw off our gut’s balance, leaving us feeling tired, sluggish and just generally unwell. So, we’ve enlisted the expert advice of Jessica Sepel, bestselling author and founder of JSHealth, and Priceline Pharmacist
Stewart Hancock to help decipher symptoms and share the feel-good foods and supplements we need to supercharge our gut health.
Research suggests that a good night’s sleep might come down to far more than just a great pillow. “Quality sleep depends heavily on a thriving supply of healthy gut bacteria,” says Stewart. These microbes support our body’s production of sleep-regulating hormones like melatonin, serotonin and dopamine. Without these, our circadian rhythm is disrupted, making less and low-quality sleep more likely. What’s more, studies suggest the gut-sleep connection is reciprocal: better sleep supports the production and maintenance of good gut bacteria. “Ease into an earlier bedtime in 15-minute increments each night,” recommends Stewart. And enjoy better-quality sleep by introducing a gut-supporting supplement into your daily routine.
For Jessica, a nutritious, wholefood diet is crucial for improving gut health. Look for foods rich in prebiotics, which feed the good bacteria in the gut. These naturally occur in a number of vegetables, including garlic, onion, asparagus and Jerusalem artichoke, as well as a range of fruits, beans and grains. Similarly, fermented foods, such as yoghurt, kimchi, sauerkraut and kefir, contain powerful probiotics, which bolster our levels of good gut bacteria. Jessica also recommends consuming plenty of macronutrients. “Protein contains amino acids that help repair the gut lining, while carbohydrates help with blood sugar regulation and bowel regularity,” she says. Healthy fats have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, too. “Try avocado, extra virgin olive oil, ghee, nuts and seeds.”
An unhealthy gut can impair mood and cognition. That’s because our gut is home to the enteric nervous system, which connects to the central nervous system in the brain. Put simply, changes in the gut have a direct and meaningful impact on how we feel.
If you’re dealing with low mood and anxiety on top of telltale symptoms such as gas, bloating and diarrhoea, it’s most likely related. “Taking care of your mental wellbeing starts in the gut,” says Stewart. Supporting gut health – by getting adequate rest, exercising daily, enjoying a nutritious wholefood diet and taking dietary supplements if necessary – can have a profound impact on our state of mind. And this is a two-way street: psychological stress suppresses good bacteria. “Finding ways to manage your mental wellbeing can positively affect gut health,” says Stewart. Mindful movement, such as yoga and hiking, can improve how we feel both mentally and physically by reducing stress and increasing the composition of good gut bacteria.

Boost your wellbeing and establish healthy habits with Dr Happy’s expert tips
Affectionately known as ‘Dr Happy’, mental health advocate and worldrenowned leader in the field of positive psychology Dr Tim Sharp practises what he preaches. We tapped his expertise for simple, practical ways to fill your day with more moments of joy.
To help establish a new routine, Dr Tim recommends creating ‘micro-habits’ – achievable, everyday actions that contribute to an all-round happier, healthier life. “Start small with whatever time and resources you have,” he says, such as upping your water intake, following an online stretch routine or preparing a nutritious lunch. “Microhabits are often underrated but every little bit counts.”
Set yourself up for success by choosing a healthy habit that makes you smile, not procrastinate. “You’ll be more likely to do it – and more likely to enjoy the benefits,” says Dr Tim. Not a runner? Switch to a form of exercise that sparks joy, be it swimming, yoga or Zumba. It’ll keep you moving, help you let go of stress and bring a smile to your face.
The best way to adopt positive habits and improve your overall happiness is to do it “slowly but surely, bit by bit and with realistic expectations”, says Dr Tim. Give yourself a reasonable time frame for improvement and take it one walk, journal entry or new hobby at a time.
“Tack a small new habit onto an existing routine that already happens easily,” suggests Dr Tim. “For example, when you brush your teeth, use those two minutes, morning and night, for gratitude practice.”

well, boost energy and relax tired muscles with our picks for a healthy mind and body
“A habit buddy – someone who will exercise with you or encourage you to practise mindfulness – can improve habit building,” explains Dr Tim. “Plus, social connections and positive relationships are key to happiness.”
If you’d like to start exercising or meditating, take note of how you spend your time. “Instead of binge-watching television shows or doomscrolling on social media, make a conscious effort to put your new habits first,” says Dr Tim. Try to wake up that little bit earlier for a morning walk or set a bedtime reminder to turn off the TV and start your wind-down breathwork.
Hack 7: Just say ‘no’
Make room for new habits by reassessing your old ones. “Many of us could benefit from saying ‘no’ to habits in our lives that don’t add any value – and maybe even detract from our health and happiness,” says Dr Tim. Today’s the day to set your screen-time limit.
Hack 8: Schedule self-care
Struggling to find time to look after yourself? “Put time in your calendar for new habits,” suggests Dr Tim. “Make an appointment with yourself and stick to it as diligently as you would anything else.” There’s never been a better time to pick up a book or enjoy your own company.
Hack 9: Treat yourself
Use positive reinforcement to maintain your new habits. “It can be helpful to reward yourself for every effort you make,” says Dr Tim. A cup of coffee while you journal or listening to your favourite podcast while you work out might just be the extra motivation you need.
Hack 10: Stick with it
“Know that there will be ups and downs,” says Dr Tim. “Be prepared and be kind to yourself when you have a setback. And then get back into things as best you can, as soon as you can.”
TV and radio host and mum of three Chrissie Swan shares her own happiness hacks
“When I walk, I take note of my surroundings on purpose. It’s a great way to be mindful while getting some essential alone time. Walking ticks so many boxes for me.”
“To wind down and recharge, a cup of tea or a lie-down in my quiet bedroom always works a treat. I get as much good sleep as I can.”
“I take iron, a general multivitamin and a gut health supplement every day. I also try to take vitamin C and magnesium if I have them.”
“Know that there will be ups and downs. Be prepared and be kind to yourself when you have a setback. And then get back into things as best you can, as soon as you can.”

If you’re pregnant or trying for a baby, here’s how to take care of your body and mind
Trying for a baby is an exciting time. But, from struggling to conceive to coping with morning sickness, this period of your life can also feel overwhelming. We spoke to Dr Karen Coates, a holistic medical doctor and co-author of How to Be Well: A Handbook for Women, and Priceline Pharmacist Nancy El-Miski about how to help you prepare for the journey ahead.
How can lifestyle factors impact conception and pregnancy?
Dr Karen Coates: Improving stress resilience is important. Our body’s biochemistry is unchanged from primitive times. Our response to stress is interpreted by the brain as a potential drought, famine or war. Your clever body responds by altering fertility hormones to reduce the chances of pregnancy, creating a safe passage through this perceived danger time. Unfortunately, in today’s world, this stress trigger is more likely to be psychological (time pressures or financial worries) or the physical stress of too much aerobic training. Nutritional deficiencies, poor gut health and sleep disturbances can also create a hormonal roadblock to conception.
Nancy El-Miski Priceline PharmacistAre there any lifestyle changes we should adopt while trying to conceive?
Nancy El-Miski: Some lifestyle factors, such as smoking, illicit drug use, and alcohol and caffeine consumption, can negatively influence fertility. Other factors can be positive, such as physical activity and incorporating yoga, Pilates or meditation to help your mind stay positive and strengthen your body. It’s also worth chatting to your Priceline Pharmacist about your current vitamins, medications and skincare to make sure they’re safe to use during pregnancy.
What can we expect during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy?
KC: It can be a challenge as your body adjusts to the pregnancy hormones. It’s common to experience nausea (try ginger tea), fatigue (rest when your body needs a recharge), constipation (drink plenty of water and increase your fibre intake) and breast tenderness and fullness (a reassuring sign of healthy pregnancy hormones).
What should we look for in prenatal vitamins?
NE: The first eight weeks of pregnancy are critical for the development of a baby’s vital organs, so you want to make sure the nutrients you’re consuming are just right. Speak to your Priceline Pharmacist to find the right vitamins for you.
What self-care rituals can help us feel our best while pregnant?
NE: Self-care is vital during pregnancy. Some women find taking a walk, swimming, listening to music, doing yoga or Pilates, or enjoying a pregnancy massage can help. The changes to your body can affect your confidence, so speaking to a psychologist can help you overcome any challenges you may be experiencing.
Is there anything you wish you knew before you became pregnant yourself?
NE: Yes – the impact of hormonal changes and how they can cause mood swings, anxiety and forgetfulness. I also wish I’d known more about miscarriage. I recently experienced one myself and definitely wasn’t prepared for it. I think it’s important to know that, unfortunately, it is very common – up to one in four women experiences the anguish of a miscarriage. Know that you’re not alone and there are many support services out there to help you, such as The Pink Elephants Support Network. pinkelephants.org.au

Gone are the days of a onesize-fits-all approach to periods. Championed by Julie Moulder and Kate Everitt, founders of menstrual supplement brand The Fix, we’re entering an era of functional menstrual care that puts personalised routines and communitydriven conversations at the forefront.
While period products have come a long way in recent years, Julie and Kate noticed there were few choices available when it came to dealing with the side effects of menstruation. “We’d heard how crippling period symptoms can be – and experienced it firsthand,” says Julie. “We came to the realisation that nobody had ever tried to address our concerns.” So they created a wide range of symptom-specific period relief supplements – an innovative alternative to over-the-counter painkillers. “We need to target our symptoms with the ferocity that they treat us,” says Kate.
We all have different experiences with menstruation so it’s important to tailor period care to your symptoms and routine. Innovations, such as leak-proof undies, menstrual cups and organic cotton tampons, mean solutions exist for every body at every stage. “We firmly believe that people everywhere deserve to have their best period ever,” says Kate. “It’s our mission to get them back to school, in boardrooms and on sports fields,” adds Julie.
Modern period care is powered by open conversations about menstruation. “We need to keep talking about periods, eyeballing taboos and confronting stigma,” says Julie. “We need to empower our community to treat their unbearable symptoms.” From normalising the topic with friends and family to accessing support through digital communities, pushing our periods into wider cultural conversations is crucial to our menstrual health.
Embrace that time of the month with sustainable swaps and clever new period products
More sustainable than tampons, menstrual cups are reusable and can be left in for eight hours – so you can get on with your day.
