The Priceline team’s top present suggestions
I’m not one for making New Year’s resolutions. While it’s nice to dream big, I find the pressure to set lofty goals for the year ahead only leads to disappointment – often before January is even over! Instead, I like the idea of a seasonal refresh – regularly looking at my life to see what small, achievable things I can do to make it even better. For me, something as simple as walking every day can make a big difference.
If there’s something I should resolve to do this season, it’s to get on top of my Christmas shopping early. Thankfully, Priceline always has my back. From cult makeup buys for a beauty-obsessed BFF to thoughtful gifts for a child’s favourite teacher, they’ve put together the ultimate Christmas gift guide to help us tick off everyone on our lists (page 53).
Of course, it wouldn’t be an Australian Christmas without a much-deserved summer break. If you’re travelling this festive season, make sure you check out our packing essentials (page 30). And if it’s the beach calling your name, get back to sunscreen basics with our story on page 32.
Whatever you’re up to, I wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2023.

As a TV and radio host, and mum of three, Chrissie Swan is no stranger to the juggle. With the holidays approaching, our cover star shares her festive-season tips, beauty essentials and self-care advice for finding balance
My earliest Christmas memory is the time I was given a Play-Doh Fuzzy Pumper Barber Shop in 1980! I wanted it so badly. I still have it.
If I’m hosting, I go all out to make it as memorable as I can. We have lots of great food, awesome music and somewhere quiet and cool for conversation.
I like being busy, it energises me! I love lists and checking them off so I’m super organised. But I often leave wrapping presents til the last minute – at my peril!
Calm the season’s chaos with three self-care practices for any time of day
When you’re feeling under pressure, press pause. Make a cup of tea, write a to-do list or just close your eyes and breathe deeply to hit reset on demanding days.
To wind down at the end of the day, spend time caring for yourself. Pop on a face mask, hide away with a book or listen to a podcast as you get ready to doze.
Over the break, I embrace downtime. We spend the first few weeks of the holidays catching our breath. I love days when all you achieve is drinking a good coffee, reading a few chapters of a book and swimming in the ocean.
Walking every single day has changed the way I feel. In fact, this simple daily habit has rewired my brain. And I use the alone time to organise our busy lives.
When it comes to juggling families and careers, is anyone really nailing it? I just focus on the next 16 hours and make sure I have the energy to get through it.
To start the new year afresh, focus on what you like to do and do it. Question the things you do because you think you should and reprogram yourself not to care what others think.
I’m a very basic person – so if I can do my skincare in the shower, I will. Most days, I just cleanse and whack on a hydrating moisturiser.
Zone out the day’s stresses with Chrissie’s go-to self-care practice, walking. “It regulates my stress and anxiety, so I’m better equipped to deal with stressful situations when they arise.”
My best advice for creating a new habit is to practise it every day – even if you only have five minutes.
Remembering to drink enough water is what really makes a difference to my skin. I also take a multivitamin, gut health supplement, vitamin C and magnesium to support my wellbeing.
I keep my summer beauty routine simple. I apply SPF first thing, then bronzer, cheek tint, mascara and Lanolips lip balm. And when I want to perk myself up, a red lip never fails.
My personal sisterhood is tiny but mighty! Everyone I love has the ability to make me laugh or make me think. What a gift!
When it comes to juggling families and careers… I just focus on the next 16 hours.

Summer is the season for playful, celebratory makeup that heroes your natural glow. Start your makeup routine with Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw’s bare essentials – a few drops of foundation, a dewy illuminator and brushed-up brows. Then you’re ready to take on new-season beauty trends with Sarah’s makeup tricks and formula picks. To follow, your guide to enhancing summer glow with sophisticated eyes, bright lips and a natural, peachy flush.
“I love gently smudged navy eyeliner,” says Sarah. For a minimalist technique to define your eyes for evening, she recommends using a deep navy eyeliner in a creamy pencil on the top lash line and the very outer corners of lashes, then softening the liner with your fingertip or a brush. Balance dramatic eyes with natural lashes, dewy skin and plump lips. “It’s an easy alternative to smoky eyes or winged eyeliner when you’re short on time,” says Sarah. Definitely worth having in your makeup repertoire.
“A striking tomato or tangerine lipstick will amplify your summer glow,” says Sarah. Use a lip brush or liner to define the lip then reach for an orange-red shade of lipstick with a soft-matte formula to swipe onto lips. Just pat a golden illuminator onto cheekbones and brush brows up with a tinted wax to recreate Sarah’s celebratory beauty mood.
“Bronzer is a beautiful way to add dimension to the face,” says Sarah. Start by creating an even base with a lightweight foundation then apply bronzer with a “fluffy brush where the sun naturally hits”. Finish with lengthening mascara for the perfect summer look. To boost glow overnight, Sarah’s top tip is to mix tanning drops into your skincare and apply where you normally would bronzer.
For playful summer makeup, Sarah says, “Flushing cheeks, eyes and lips are the perfect makeup refresh.” Prep skin with a hydrating foundation to plump complexion and add coverage then dust a peachy blush across the tops of the cheeks and eyelids. To take the look from day to night, add gold shimmer to the centre of the lids and layer on a peach lip gloss for extra sparkle.
Put your best foot forward with these tips for healthy feet from Priceline Beauty Advisor
Summer is synonymous with beaches, barbecues and bare feet. But if the thought of sandal season is enough to instil a deep sense of dread after months of hibernating in woollen socks, worry no longer – a few simple steps are all you need to achieve fancy feet for the festive season.
Without the sebaceous (oil) glands that are present on nearly all other parts of the skin, our feet are particularly susceptible to dehydration. Add in their daily workload (holding up your entire body!) and the steaming showers and heating associated with winter, and you’ve got a recipe for dry, flaky skin come summer.
Combat it by slathering on a rich moisturiser regularly, particularly before bed when you can pop on some socks for a really deep hydration boost. Priceline Beauty Advisor Fina O’Brien recommends Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Foot Magic, which moisturises, soothes and invigorates tired feet. “I use it every night. It’s great for dry hands, too,” Fina says. Or opt for a multitasking product that does all the hard work for you, such as Scholl ExpertCare Dry Skin PediMask. The sock mask provides an intense feeling of nourishment, working its magic in just 20 minutes while offering eight hours of non-greasy hydration.
1. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Foot Magic 60g, $7.99.
2. Scholl ExpertCare Dry Skin PediMask, $6.99.
Another common ailment is hard, cracked skin, usually appearing on the heels and other pressure points of your feet. It’s exacerbated by things like exercise, walking barefoot and standing for long periods of time, and if left untreated can become painful or even infected.
Treat your feet by opting for a heel balm – one that contains urea, which exfoliates and moisturises, is your best bet (we love Dermal Therapy Heel Balm Platinum). Exfoliating the skin with a loofah or pumice stone can also work wonders – try Essential Bath 4 in 1 Pedi Brush. Another option is the Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Foot Care System, which has a self-rotating buffer that can be used wet or dry to slough away hard skin, and an automatic safety stop to ensure you don’t apply too much pressure. If you notice any corns (small, sometimes painful areas of hard skin, often seen on the pinky toe), consider the Manicare Corn Plane, which can be used on moist skin to reduce fine layers of dead tissue.
Now that the skin on your feet is looking its best, it’s time to give your nails some love with a DIY pedicure. Start by clipping your nails straight across, being careful not to go too short (aim to see a little bit of white at the tip). The Revlon Salon Series Pro Toenail Clipper features large blades that make it perfect for toenails. File nails into shape, working in one direction to avoid making the nails brittle. Next up, clean the cuticles and around the nails – Manicare’s maniPRO 2-in-1 Cleaner & Pusher makes quick work of pushing back the cuticles and cleaning under the nail. Then buff each nail until smooth. Again, don’t go overboard here – you want to buff for shine and consistency, without thinning the nails too much. To help, we love Flawless Finishing Touch Salon Nails. It’s a complete solution, allowing you to file, buff and remove cuticles with ease.
Now comes the fun part – nail polish. Just like with your fingernails, use a base coat and top coat as well as the coloured lacquer to ensure longevity. Fina swears by at-home gel polish for maximum wear. “You absolutely need to use the Opallac Gel Polish Kit. The gel polish lasts for up to 14 days,” Fina says.
As for colour, that’s completely up to you. Nudes are a timeless option but at this time of year we can’t resist a brightly coloured party pedi – particularly in shades of blue, purple and festive red. “Periwinkle is trending as a nail colour this year,” Fina says. “Blue shades with red undertones are also going to be big in summer.” Our favourite colour? Rimmel London Kind & Free Nail Polish in Lavender Fresh.
Then all you need is a pair of sandals to show off your perfectly groomed feet – the strappier the better!

Kathy Myers sheds light on the most prevalent complaint affecting feet and what we can do about it
“Athlete’s foot is the most common foot-related problem in summer,” says Kathy, referring to the fungal skin infection that presents as an itchy, scaly rash. It’s often the result of excessive sweating in tight shoes. Kathy offers one clear solution for treating the highly contagious condition: “Anti-fungal creams – you can’t go wrong with oncea-day application.”
For best coverage, m ake sure you don’t overload the brush and sweep polish from the base of the nail to the tip.
Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Sunscreens are only one component of sun protection. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Frequent use and re-application in accordance with directions is required for effective sun protection.

Embrace SPF
“The skin on your face is finer and more reactive than the skin on the rest of your body,” warns Sarah. So, make SPF an everyday essential to minimise visible fine lines and pigmentation.
1. Avène Sunscreen Emulsion Face SPF 50+ 50mL, $29.99.
Reapply with ease
Sarah’s tip: Streamline your post-dip routine and use a sunscreen that can be applied onto wet skin after your swim or sweat sesh.
2. La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Wet Skin Gel SPF 50+ 250mL, $39.99.
Don’t skip your lips
“Sun protection belongs everywhere that skin is exposed to light – including your lips,” says Sarah. To protect and hydrate in one swipe, look for a balm with SPF 50 by day and a nourishing one for night.
3. Dermal Therapy Lip Balm SPF 50+, $6.99.
4. Nivea Hydro Care, $4.49.
Boost your glow with SPF-spiked skincare and makeup. “But keep in mind that they don’t necessarily replace actual sunscreen,” says Sarah.
5. The Quick Flick Prep Moisturiser with Blue Light Defence SPF 50+ 45mL, $44.95.
6. Australis Fresh & Flawless Skin Tint SPF 15 30mL in Natural, $17.95.
“For makeup that outlasts the ocean and perspiration, pick a waterproof formula,” says Sarah, who keeps beach beauty simple with foundation, a lengthening mascara and a lip stain.
7. L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24H Fresh Wear Foundation 30mL, $36.99.
8. Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof Mascara, $25.99.
9. L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24H 2-Step Nude Lipstick in Metro Proof Rose, $31.99.
If your skin feels tight and flushed, “hydrating serums and moisturisers will help comfort your skin,” says Sarah. For an on-the-go refresh, try a hyaluronic acid face mist. And if you have spent too much time under the sun, slather on formulas enriched with vitamin E and provitamin B5 to aid skin’s recovery.
10. Q+A Hyaluronic Acid Face Mist 100mL, $13.
11. NYX Professional Makeup Plump Right Back Plumping Serum + Primer 30mL, $29.95.
“Even though we love a sea-salt styling spray to get those beachy waves, it can leave hair feeling dry,” says Sarah. To smooth and soften ends, she suggests running a post-beach moisture treatment though clean, damp hair.
12. John Frieda Hydrate & Recharge Deep Soak Masque 250mL, $17.99.
You don’t need a slew of dermatologist treatments to target your skin concerns. This is where high-powered serums shine. A retinol concentrate, like No7’s, speeds up cell turnover, reduces visible wrinkles and restores supple skin. Or adopt a vitamin C serum from Dr. LeWinn’s: its potent antioxidants brighten and prevent the appearance of dark spots to improve uneven skin tone. You’ll see youthful skin by morning – and into the future.
Generations of harsh foaming cleansers are out – and gentle, skinsupporting formulas are on the way in. Here are two new textures to try:
Bondi Sands’ nutrient-rich cleansing balm comforts dry skin and melts away makeup, while Carbon Theory’s charcoal and tea tree bar rebalances oil, clarifies pores and helps prevent visible breakouts. Don’t underestimate your cleanser – finding the right formula could transform your skin.
Theory’s charcoal and tea
If your summers are filled with ocean dips and laps of pools, try Fudge’s Clean Blonde Violet-Toning Shampoo. Purple pigments neutralise unwanted warm tones in blonde and highlighted hair, while softening and protecting strands with hydrating guarana and natural proteins. It’s summer maintenance in one multitasking lather. Fudge Clean Blonde Violet-Toning Shampoo 250mL, $23.99.
Grow your lashes and brows to new lengths. With four peptide complexes and natural growth-boosting extracts, The Ordinary’s first Lash and Brow Serum encourages stronger, thicker lashes and brows – for full, fluttering results in weeks. The Ordinary Lash and Brow Serum, $24.60.
For 2023, Priceline Beauty Advisors Emily Pankhurst and Nicole Daniel are setting their sights on glowing skin – with next-level skincare to match. “I think at-home salon treatments are going to be big next year,” predicts Emily. From innovative skincare to tools for DIY facials, get ready to overhaul your skincare routine. For our day-to-day face, “Pairing healthy, hydrated skin with glossy lips is going to be all the rage,” says Nicole. The secret to nailing the trend? Drench skin in a hyaluronic acid serum then swipe on a clear gloss for glazed skin and shiny lips. It doesn’t get much dewier – or easier – than this.
5. No7 HydraLuminous Water Concentrate 30mL, $29.99.
6. L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Filler 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Serum 30mL, $54.99.
7. Revolution Pout Bomb Plumping Lipgloss in Glaze 25mL, $10.
Next time you take one last swipe of your moisturiser, reconsider your routine. With a new wave of refillable options hitting shelves – like Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Water Gel refill pods – you can reduce your plastic waste by 89%. So, instead of doing away with empty jars, refill and repeat for a responsible beauty routine.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel Refill 50g, $27.99.
When social commitments call for luminous skin and festive touches, refresh makeup in three steps.
Step one: Layer your lashes
Add lift to your lashes with Rimmel London’s bold Wonder’Volume Thrill Seeker Mascara or a pair of Elyure’s faux lashes for added drama.

For many of us, silky skin is the first step in summer beauty prep. After all, the beach awaits! From exfoliating to hair removal, here are the bathroom essentials for effortlessly soft skin all summer long.
As the mercury rises outside, it pays to drop the temperature on your skincare routine. From soothing blemishes, reducing puffiness and calming irritation to sculpting your cheekbones and giving a glowing complexion, keeping your favourite products on ice is this summer’s coolest trend.
“Massaging the face with something cold or frozen, like a jade roller or ice globe, helps to de-puff, boost circulation and reduce redness,” shares Priceline Beauty Advisor Emily Pankhurst. “It can be particularly effective for sensitive skin types,” she adds. Even a simple ice cube plucked from the freezer will do the trick for a moment of self-care. Try working it from the centre of your chin, out along the jawline to the earlobes, then over the high points of your cheeks, under the eyes and across your forehead for a touch of contouring.
On top of its brightening and lifting effect, icing constricts blood vessels in the face, which can help minimise the appearance of pores and wrinkles. The coldness can also help reduce pain and swelling caused by breakouts or a little too much sun. For maximum impact, alternate the application of something iced with a warm compress to stop help acne flare-ups in their tracks. The change in temperature helps stimulate circulation, letting the body’s immune system calm down and do its job. Reducing swelling also helps bring any bacteria to the surface, so your products work harder as they break down oil and dead skin cells that clog pores.
Keeping certain products in the fridge can result in supercharged efficacy and an elongated shelf life – not to mention they will be a saving grace for skin on hot, humid days. So, whether it’s a hydrating sheet mask before an event or your favourite everyday serums, it’s time to consider moving your skincare collection from the bathroom cabinet to the top shelf of your fridge during the warmer months.
“Putting The Ordinary’s Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG in the fridge helps it give an extra de-puffing effect when used,” Emily shares. “Try gently massaging a few chilled drops into your eye contour and reap the rewards.” It’s a festive-season fail-safe.
A spritz of chilled facial mist or swipe of gel-based moisturiser offers skin an instant freshness even on the hottest days. And for natural products that are free from preservatives, or those that can become unstable or prone to breaking down in the heat (we’re looking at you, vitamin C), cold storage can help ingredients stay potent for longer.
Feeling brave?

Heading away?
Priceline Beauty Advisor Brooke Jones shares how to plan and pack for adventures near and far
Building a travel-friendly routine is the best way to combat holiday skin freakouts and keep your complexion glowing in all your vacation pictures. But more than just buying downsized versions of your favourite products, a wellplanned skincare packing list can help prevent and treat issues that arise without weighing you down.
We all know how drying the air on planes can be. A combination of low humidity and blasting air conditioning is a recipe for dull, dehydrated skin. “Sometimes a lack of moisture in the skin can lead to overproduction of sebum, which can cause unwanted breakouts,” shares Priceline Beauty Advisor Brooke Jones. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding salty snacks and applying moisture-boosting products both pre- and post-flight are the best ways to help rebalance and repair the skin barrier after flying. A few spritzes of face mist during your flight can also help to revive thirsty skin.
Makeup, sunscreen, pollution and sweat can clog pores and leave your skin feeling congested. Properly cleansing is the first step in keeping your skin blemish-free after days spent sightseeing or relaxing by the pool. Opt for face wipes or a cleansing bar for a suitcase-friendly option. And, depending on how long you’re going to be away, it’s worth packing an exfoliating sheet mask (with charcoal or clay to help draw out impurities) for a deeper clean.
Brooke recommends applying an intensive and repairing barrier cream – something that can help prevent further dryness and support skin recovery – after landing and throughout your holiday. Under-eye patches can also help hydrate and soothe puffy or tired eyes if you’re suffering from jet lag or feeling the effects of late nights. And pimple patches are a super-easy-to-pack breakout-buster: “They come individually packaged and take up no space at all. Salicylic acid helps gently unclog pores, and niacinamide and hyaluronic acid will keep the area hydrated to prevent scarring,” Brooke says.
Changes in climate can lead to dry or cracked skin and our hands and lips are particularly vulnerable. Frequent handwashing and using hand sanitiser or alcohol wipes can exaggerate the effects of dry plane air, while increased sun exposure sometimes leads to irritated skin on the back of the hands. Opt for a hydrating hand cream to soothe and nourish your skin. When it comes to holiday makeup, Brooke says multitasking products can help to lighten the load. “Strip back your makeup bag and take products that work double time. A hydrating lipstick in a rosy hue can also be used as a cheek tint for a healthy flush,” she adds.
From how much to apply to the best formulas, we answer all your questions about SPF
You slather it on (hopefully) every day, but how much do you really know about sunscreen and how to make sure it’s as effective as possible? With summer fast approaching, now is the time to brush up on the basics to keep your skin – and health – in check.
Physical (or mineral) sunscreens sit on the surface of your skin, creating a physical shield that reflects the sun’s rays. They contain active ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and are suitable for even sensitive and acne-prone skin, but they can sometimes leave a chalky residue on skin. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, sink into the skin and absorb the sun’s rays, transforming them into heat before emitting that heat through the skin. They’re usually lighter and more sheer than physical sunscreens so are easy to work into your regular skincare regimen or wear underneath makeup.
“You need to apply a liberal amount to the face and body,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Nicole Daniel. “The Cancer Council recommends about one teaspoon worth of sunscreen for each section of your body, including your face. It’s vital to follow the recommended time of reapplication to maintain protection – that’s every two hours.” And always reapply after swimming, sweating or towel-drying.
SPF is an indicator of how well the sunscreen will protect your skin, and it’s recommended that you opt for 30 or higher. The difference between SPF numbers is the amount of UVA protection that’s offered (that is, how much it will shield you from the sun’s rays that can cause premature ageing and skin cancer). SPF 50+ products allow 1/50th of UVA radiation through, whereas SPF 30 allows 1/30th. But remember, sunscreens need to be applied generously to achieve the SPF stated on the label.
“The biggest myth is that you don’t need to apply sunscreen if it’s cloudy,” says Nicole. “You need sunscreen both when the sky is clear and when you see those fluffy, white clouds. Up to 80 per cent of UV rays pass through clouds so it’s important to protect your skin every day.”
Should you have a different sunscreen for the face and body?
What about the lips?
“It’s important to pick your sunscreen according to the thickness and the sensitivity of your skin,” says Nicole. “Body sunscreens are often formulated with different ingredients compared to facial ones. They also might include fragrances and other ingredients that aren’t as great for the delicate areas of the face. Facial sunscreens are generally made to be lighter and gentler on the skin, which can help prevent breakouts. Using SPF on your lips is also important as they’re one of the most delicate parts of the face. You can use a lip balm with SPF in it or simply swipe a bit of your regular sunscreen over them.”
Does sunscreen expire?
Yes, it does. Sunscreen manufacturers are required to provide an expiry date on the packaging. After this date the product can have compromised efficacy. Sunscreen should also be stored out of direct sunlight and below 30ºC to keep it at top quality.
How should I layer my sunscreen with my other skincare products?
Sunscreen should be applied after all your other skincare products but before makeup. “I recommend completing your usual skincare regimen, waiting a few minutes for everything to absorb, then applying your sunscreen,” says Nicole.
Always opt for a broadspectrum sunscreen. This means it will protect your skin from both UVA and UV B rays, helping to prevent skin cancer and premature ageing.

Most of us are well versed in the language of skincare but what about scalp care?
With the help of Priceline experts, we’re getting to the root of your summer scalp concerns
The time has arrived to start considering your scalp with the same thoughtfulness as the rest of your skincare routine. It’s made up of pore-like follicles, as well as an abundance of oil and sweat glands. And for beautiful, luscious locks, it’s important for the skin on your scalp to function properly. Warmer weather and environmental factors can upset the balance of natural oils on your scalp, making it more susceptible to a range of irritating conditions – think dry, flaky skin or roots that seem to be forever oily, even after shampooing.
Warmer temperatures and higher humidity can trigger an excess production of oil, leaving your roots weighed down. An easy fix is to introduce a scalp cleanse to your weekly routine, suggests Priceline Beauty Advisor Brooke Jones. “An excellent exfoliant is the Grow Longer Stronger Stimulating Scalp Scrub. It contains natural peppermint oil and sea salt to exfoliate, refresh and restore the scalp and its natural balance.” To get best results, take the time to massage your chosen product into the scalp. Regular deep-tissue massage is shown to stimulate the hair follicles, in turn encouraging the shedding of dead skin cells and reducing scalp inflammation.
1. Grow Longer Stronger Stimulating Scalp Scrub 140g, $16.99.
2. Lady Jane Flexi-Glide Brush, $10.99.
Just like you would your skincare, it’s important to tailor your shampoo to your scalp’s individual needs. If excessive oil is your problem, Brooke suggests the Klorane Aquatic Mint Scalp Detox Shampoo, designed to remove product build-up, while maintaining natural balance. And keep your scalp feeling fresh between washes with Batiste Dry Shampoo Original. With just a few spritzes, hair will look clean and feel even better.
While dryness might seem like a winter issue, it can appear yearround. Priceline Pharmacist Kathy Myers warns that warm weather, sweat and environmental pollution can act as aggravators for flakecausing microbes, making this one of summer’s most common scalp issues. Try an anti-fungal shampoo, such as Selsun Blue Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, to fight flake-causing bacteria and ease itching. Follow up with a light moisturiser, like The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA, to mimic the scalp’s natural barrier without clogging pores.
Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA 60mL, $21.80.
Start the new year right with a health, beauty and skincare reset. Our expert tips will help transform your best intentions into effortless routines
Optimise your health and wellbeing with essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Whether you want to boost your immunity, increase energy levels or simply feel well, a daily multivitamin or supplement will help your mind and body perform at its best.
Tip: Take your supplements when it suits you, like over breakfast or before bed, says Priceline Pharmacist Kathy Myers.
It’s time to take your morning routine seriously. Vitamin C strengthens skin on a cellular level and applying a vitamin C serum every morning will help minimise visible ageing effects of UV rays, pollution and stress – and instantly amp up glow.
Tip: When you’re short on time, just swipe on a vitamin C-infused micellar water and follow with SPF – a hydrating facial sunscreen can even double as a moisturiser, notes Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw.
Make those two minutes you spend brushing each morning and night really count. Start by upgrading your dental tech with the latest generation of Oral-B’s intelligent toothbrushes and keep your pearly whites sparkling clean with a charcoal toothpaste.
Tip: If 2023 is the year you start flossing, try Colgate’s water flosser. It’ll make the once tedious task incredibly easy – and it’s more effective, too.
Kick that late-night habit with foolproof cleansing solutions. For sensitive eyes, wipe away stubborn mascara, then smooth Bioderma’s famed micellar water or The Ordinary’s gel-cream cleanser across skin. These makeup-melting cleansers will refresh skin and get you ready for bed in less than 30 seconds. Tip: When you get carried away with the festivities, Sarah recommends keeping a wipe or some cotton pads beside the bed for fast, mess-free cleansing.
Don’t settle for flat, lacklustre strands. The solution is as simple as combing a leave-in conditioner through your hair. These multitasking formulas hydrate, smooth and seal split ends in one.
Tip: Look for a lightweight leave-in to run through damp hair after every wash – then let your hair air-dry to hero your natural texture and volume, says Sarah.
Got a niggling health concern that you want solved? We’re here to help
You may think they’re trivial and not worth sharing but those little health concerns that interfere with your day are far more common than you might think – and can often be solved quickly and easily. Read on for your comprehensive guide to addressing those pesky summer health worries.
Q. The summer heat can leave me sweaty and, to be honest, a little smelly. What can I do?
A. “When you exercise or get too warm, your sweat glands release sweat to cool down your body. This can also happen when you’re feeling stressed or nervous,” says Priceline Pharmacist Jane McLean. “When sweat comes into contact with the bacteria on your skin, body odour is formed.” If you’re feeling self-conscious, Jane suggests reviewing your choice of deodorant and making sure you opt for a quality antiperspirant.
Q. What’s the best way to prevent heartburn? I suffer from it regularly and it’s stopping me from enjoying the foods I love.
A. That painful, burning sensation you get in your chest is caused by stomach acid coming back up your oesophagus, and can be triggered by spicy foods, tomato-based products, chocolate and coffee (to name a few things). While it’s uncomfortable, the good news is that it’s rarely a reason for alarm and it can be prevented. Eat smaller, more frequent meals, try to eat your last meal a few hours before bedtime and elevate your upper body with pillows when you do turn in for the night. Medication that decreases the amount of acid made by the stomach can also provide relief. Look for one that’s long-lasting so you can get on with your day without giving heartburn another thought.
Q. How can I ease the discomfort of sore, irritated eyes?
Q. I thought eczema was a winter ailment but mine seems to flare up year-round. Please help!
A. It’s true – the cold, dry air of winter usually makes eczema worse. But summer presents its own challenges; chemical sunscreens, sweating and swimming can all cause further irritation. Keep eczema in check by staying cool, rinsing off after taking a dip and ensuring skin stays clean with a mild body wash and facial cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils. Hydration is also key. Up the ante with a moisturiser spiked with ceramides – the fatty acids lock moisture in and can help soothe irritated skin.
A. It all comes down to the cause. If you wear contact lenses, use a targeted formula to make sure the lenses stay clean, conditioned and comfortable all day. If allergies are the culprit, regular use of an intranasal corticosteroid spray can provide extended relief from itchy eyes as well as other symptoms, such as nasal congestion and sneezing. Think it’s just a case of too much screen time or environmental factors, like wind or pollution? Pick a multipurpose product that helps replenish all layers of tear film, no matter the cause.
Q. What’s the most effective way to prevent a UTI?
A. “Urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria (and sometimes fungi) – most commonly E. coli, which usually lives in the bowel close to the urinary tract,” says Jane. “The best way to prevent a UTI is to increase water intake, avoid irritants, such as coffee, tea, alcohol and fizzy drinks, wipe from front to back and empty your bladder after intercourse.” A daily supplement can support urinary tract health, particularly with cranberries, which can reduce bacteria’s ability to stick to the urinary tract wall.
If you do develop a UTI, Jane advises talking to your GP. “Seek help if you have symptoms such as needing to urinate more than usual, pain or discomfort when urinating, feeling as though you are unable to empty your bladder fully or if your urine is cloudy or foul smelling, or contains blood – this will mean you need antibiotics.”
8. Ural High Strength Cranberry 60g 90 Capsules, $34.95.
Q. I’m lactose intolerant. Is there a way I can still enjoy dairy products?
A. Dairy is an important part of our diet, providing us with crucial calcium. Luckily, there are ways to relieve the discomfort associated with lactose intolerance. These medications, which are taken before you consume the dairy product, temporarily boost the amount of lactase enzymes in your small intestine, meaning dairy can be digested normally. So, you can have your ice cream and eat it, too!
9. Lacteeze 120 Tablets, $28.99.
Q. Is it possible to get rid of pimples on your back? I just bought this really cute singlet for summer and I’m desperate to wear it.
A. “Acne is mainly caused by clogged pores from oil, dirt and dead skin cells, changes in oil production and bacteria on the skin. It can also come from poor hygiene and excessive sweating,” says Jane. Her treatment plan? “Clean skin regularly, shower after exercise and avoid friction from tight clothes or backpacks,” she advises. “Products containing benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid can help, too.”
Q. What products should I have in my kit when I want to have some fun in the bedroom?
A. First up, you’ll want to keep the delicate skin of your vulva happy and healthy. Choose a product that works with your natural oils to hydrate, cleanse and nourish as well as eliminate odour-causing bacteria. A water-based lubricant is another must – opt for one that’s not sticky and suitable for use on condoms, toys and sensitive skin. And practise safe sex with naturalfeeling condoms that create a skinto-skin sensation.
10. Fig Femme Refresh Hydrating Wash 150mL, $14.99.
11. Vush Feelin’ Myself Intimate Gel 100mL, $15.99.
12. Skyn Original Natural Feeling Condoms 10 Pack, $10.49.
Q. I tend to suffer from foot odour during summer. Is there anything I can do to stop the stink?
A. Summer equals sweat, which in turn can equal smelly feet (as the bacteria on your feet mixes with the sweat). But a few tricks can help prevent it. “Wash your feet every day, wear clean, breathable socks and make sure your shoes aren’t too tight,” Jane suggests. An odour-nixing foot spray can also help control moisture and fight bacteria.
13. Dermal Therapy Foot Odour Control Powder Spray 210mL, $11.99.
Q. My six-year-old has developed a wart on his hand. What should I do?
A. Cryotherapy spray treatments are an effective way to treat common warts (small, flesh-coloured growths most often found on the hands and knees) and plantar warts (flat, thick masses on the soles of the feet), notes Jane. These sprays are also child-friendly (just check the packaging for exact age guides) and surprisingly easy to use – cover the wart with the applicator and pump a couple of times to release the cryoliquid.
surprisingly easy to use – cover the wart
14. Wart-Off Freeze Spray 38mL, $29.99.
Gifted communicators, Geminis are the ultimate extroverts. You thrive on good conversation and are not afraid to repeat your point until you know it’s been heard. Next year, step outside your comfort zone with a trip to a faraway location. Not only will you charm the locals with your natural charisma but you’ll bring back some pretty incredible stories and new conversation starters to share with friends back home.
The first sign of the zodiac, Aries loves to be number one. In 2023, channel this ambition towards your career goals by reaching for that raise and saying yes to professional opportunities. For a New Year’s resolution Aries will actually stick to, harness your competitive spirit with a team sport. Tennis, netball and soccer are all perfect platforms for your ferocious dedication. Even better, you’ll get fit in the process. Win-win!
Like their astrological namesake, the bull, Taureans are unshakeable. You prefer calm, familiar environments to the hustle and bustle of modern life: think a movie at home over a wild night out. Next year, nurture your serene nature by dialling up your self-care routine. Don’t be afraid to block out your calendar for a night of peace and quiet.
Where a Leo leads, others will follow. Dramatic, creative and with selfconfidence in spades, you are the king of the celestial jungle. Next year, channel your natural-born leadership qualities and powerful charisma into something good. Share the spotlight with a social cause of your choosing and watch the rest of your zodiac friends follow suit.
Ruled by the moon, Cancer is the mum of the zodiac group. It’s no secret that you’re a sensitive soul – highly intuitive and in tune with the needs and emotions of those around you. But it can be tricky to prioritise your own feelings when you’re constantly worrying about others, so make an effort to put yourself first. Solo activities that take you off grid – hiking, ocean swims, even a good book – are the perfect way to refill your cup for a busy year ahead.
Logical and industrious, Virgos can tackle any problem. Your perfectionism often sees you wearing multiple hats at the same time as you work to create order in every area of your life. But your meticulousness can be destructive when applied to yourself or others. In 2023, fire up the kiln and unleash your creative side: pottery classes are the perfect way to get messy and learn to appreciate the beauty in imperfection.
23 September–22 October
The definition of diplomatic, Libras don’t like rocking the boat. Your need to please and your dislike of conflict mean you are a master at fitting in with anyone, in any setting. But you may find yourself ignoring your own feelings and desires in order to keep the peace. Next year, schedule some alone time to reconnect with your inner thoughts with a mindful activity, like journalling.
23 October–21 November
It can be difficult to truly know an enigmatic Scorpio. Infinitely guarded and complex, you hold your cards close to your chest, calculating every move with intense strategy. Though wearing this mask constantly can grow exhausting. Enter the new year with a resolution to let your walls down and embrace your vulnerabilities. Mindful exercise, like yoga or meditation, is a great way to refocus your attention to the present moment and away from your ever-working mind.
22 November–21 December
Born to explore, Sagittarius is arguably the most adventurous sign of the zodiac. Your desire for freedom often sees you jumping from project to project, unable to remain in one place for too long. But if two years of lockdowns have taught us anything, it’s that there’s no time like the present. For Sagittarians, 2023 is the year to scratch your travel itch, so pack a bag and let your intrepid spirit run wild.
The responsible friend of the zodiac group, Capricorns are motivated by ambition. You know what you want and you won’t let anything get in the way. And, while this dedication is admirable, it can stop you from recognising the small achievements you make along the way to your lofty goal. Don’t be afraid to celebrate the small wins – think a long bubble bath or a spontaneous weekend away. The path to your goals will be far sweeter when you stop and smell the roses along the way.
Innovative and intelligent, an Aquarian’s brain hums constantly with deep insights and concepts. The humanitarian of the zodiac, you love to ponder progressive solutions to social issues and are usually more concerned with the greater good than personal problems. And 2023 is the year to put ideas into action. A vision board will help you make sense of the thoughts running through your mind and explain ideas to those around you.
The most empathetic sign, Pisces feel everything. And while this sensitivity lends itself to incredible friendships and passionate romances, it can also mean you carry the worries and stresses of those around you. When things get heavy, you tend to use escapism to cope (read: hours spent mindlessly scrolling Instagram or an entire Netflix series binged in one night). In 2023, rethink your self-care routine, aiming for healthy habits that allow you to recharge your emotional battery, like a walk in nature or reading a great book.
