Winter is the perfect time to focus on wellness. Yes, it can be a challenging season – it’s cold, gloomy and illness seems to run rampant. But because I don’t have time to get sick or feel rundown, I use it as an opportunity to really prioritise my health. For me, that means rugging up and staying active, making sure I keep hydrated (even though the cold weather makes me not feel like it), upping my ArmaForce and drinking tea in bed!

Priceline also has plenty of winter wellness hacks to make sure we don’t just survive the season, but thrive. Our guide to wellness boosters (page 64) and vitamin D cheat sheet (page 48) will help you feel vibrant and stay active as the mercury drops, while our easy makeup updates (page 14) will ensure you shine bright on even the dullest days. And there’s no need to let the cool weather wreak havoc on your hair and complexion – we’ve got simple and affordable ways to keep your strands (page 20) and skin (page 38) in top condition. Make sure you check out my favourite Priceline finds as well (page 62).

When you’re shopping at Priceline, don’t forget to take advantage of the Priceline Sister Club, which offers exclusive gifts, rewards and sale previews. Indeed, there’s never been a better reason to break out of the winter doldrums, embrace the season and make the most of every day – you won’t regret it.

Breaking the cycle

We discover the journey taken by friends Kate Everitt and Julie Moulder to launch a game-changing brand for Australian women

The funny thing about life’s big turning points is that they’re often hard to spot when you’re in the moment. It’s only much later, on reflection, that you realise something meaningful was happening. For Kate Everitt and Julie Moulder, friends and founders of The Fix – a groundbreaking new supplement company focused on women’s menstrual cycles – that moment happened 12 years ago when Kate interviewed Julie for a job.

STORY

Trailblazing best friends Kate Everitt (left) and Julie Moulder.

As Julie tells it: “I have this vivid memory of Kate walking into the room, full of this amazing confidence and energy. And in my mind, we immediately hit it off. I left thinking, ‘I want to work with this woman. She really knows what she’s talking about.’” Kate, on the other hand, was worried that Julie might just be too good to be true. “I said to my boss afterwards, ‘She's either so freaking good we need to hire her immediately, or she’s completely full of it.’” Thankfully, Kate went with her gut and hired Julie straight away.

They became inseparable, climbing the corporate ladder in nutraceuticals (aka the world of nutritional supplements) as a pair with a reputation for getting things done. “We worked at desks that were sideby-side, and often walked to work together, ate our lunch together and then even walked home together,” says Kate. “Our birthdays are two weeks apart, so we would just get bundled together for celebrations. I remember a colleague asking, ‘Are you two actually twins?’” Needless to say, it was a match made in heaven. “Our skills really complemented each other, which made things so easy. That, and we both think the other is hysterical,” says Julie.

Of course, it isn’t always rosy between the pair. “We do have some doozies,” laughs Kate. “Maybe once a year something will come up, and we have very different responses to arguments. I want to fix problems quickly whereas Julie steps back, observes and takes her time figuring out her position.” These differing approaches usually lead to a resolution they’re both happy with in the end. “We are opposites in so many ways, but it works because our friendship naturally comes first.”

A lightbulb moment

Fast forward to 2020 when the pandemic hit. Like many people, the pair found themselves mulling over their next steps during lockdown. They had spent more than a decade juggling the pressures of work and life, sharing their ups and downs with one another, supporting each other through the times they felt exhausted or when period symptoms and changing cycles made keeping up with life’s pressures a struggle. “We were talking about our hormonal symptoms, the search for relief, feelings of burnout and all of these common struggles, and we both knew we wanted to do something about it,” says Julie.

Even better, they had the knowledge, skills and experience to do it, having spent much of their careers working together in the industry. They started brainstorming ideas immediately, filling endless post-its within hours. When they came up for air, they realised they had the outline of a business plan. “We have not stopped since,” says Kate.

The pair started by talking to women of all ages about their symptoms and their struggles. “We heard so many stories during this time,” says Kate. “And there were so many common experiences.” Then there was the heartbreak, too. “I was struck by how much the women we spoke to were suffering and resigned to feeling uncomfortable and in pain,” says Julie. “As women, we really are conditioned to minimise and mask our period symptoms from a young age. Perhaps that’s why we don’t often wonder if there’s a better way.”

The friends also discovered that while the women they reached out to in their research were happy to answer their questions, they really weren’t talking about their periods, symptoms and struggles with anyone else. “They were being strong and stoic and getting on with life, in spite of how they were feeling,” says Kate. All of which simply confirmed for Kate and Julie that they were very much on the right track. The stats backed up their hunch, too: a YouGov survey conducted by The Fix in 2022 found that 93 per cent of Australian women aged 16 to 50 experience symptoms while on their period or during other points in their menstrual cycle.

“I knew there were so many ingredients, supported by solid scientific research, that could help women feel better every single month,” says Julie, who admits she was solving for her own discomfort, too. “I’ve always had quite severe bloating, which is a common symptom for women. So yes, I was personally invested in finding a fix!” Kate, in the meantime, had spent most of her adult life battling terrible cramps. Other issues that came up again and again included mood swings, breakouts and an overall sense of not feeling well.

Formula for success

After 18 months of research, formulating and trialling their products, as well as talking to fellow female founders who were willing to share their advice and experiences, in 2022, Kate and Julie launched Australia’s first period supplement range, The Fix, with five products that put the control back in our hands.

“We knew that women didn’t want to be taking pills all the time if they didn’t have to,” says Julie. “So we formulated some supplements, like XCramp and XBloat, that you only take in the lead-up to the onset of those symptoms. Others are designed to be taken daily, like XAll and XBreakout,” says Kate.

In each supplement, ingredients backed by research and testing help with this targeted approach: turmeric has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect, for instance, while magnesium can help regulate mood swings and bloating. Indeed, this emphasis on natural ingredients over synthetics where possible has also set The Fix apart since the beginning.

As The Fix goes from strength to strength, at its beating heart is still the women’s resilient, lasting friendship. “That’s always going to take priority,” says Julie, even though the pair admit they now find themselves pulled in different directions. “At the moment we have to divide and conquer, so sometimes I feel like we see each other less than we used to,” says Kate. But realising they are making a difference and firing up a conversation about period positivity makes all their hard work worth it. “Knowing that our formulas have changed the way women are living, and made their lives better, just brings us so much joy,” says Kate.

Are you feeling the winter beauty blues? As the temperature drops and the sun hides behind the clouds, Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw has just the tricks to perk up your makeup bag. In this new-season moodboard, you’ll find her easy tips for maximising your hydration and adding a little colour, plus her favourite, affordable beauty buys.

Embrace a dewy base

“If your skin gets dehydrated from the wind and cold during winter, prep with a hyaluronic acid serum, a moisturiser and a hydrating primer,” recommends Sarah. Then, apply a skincare-infused foundation to light up your winter skin. By using a buffing foundation brush in circular motions only where you need it, “you’ll get seamless coverage,” she says. “And by prepping your face properly, your skin also won’t suck in the foundation so much, so your complexion feels hydrated and your makeup looks fresh all day.” For hydration top-ups throughout the day, Sarah suggests a hyaluronic acid-dosed powder or a spritz of face mist.

30mL,

Warm up with earthy eyeshadow

Accentuate your eyes this winter by embracing universally flattering tones. “The best neutrals are a few shades deeper than your skin tone, so they bring subtle definition to your eyes,” says Sarah. For a bronzed effect, Sarah recommends sienna and terracotta shades, while cool taupes will create an edgier look. And don’t worry if you don’t usually wear eyeshadow – Sarah says this is an easy trend to master. “It can be as simple as polishing one shade across the eyelid, or you could smudge a darker shade along the lash line so it thickens your lashes and looks like a very soft eyeliner.”

Pick up a multi

“A blush that you can use across your cheeks, eyes and lips will make your routine work harder for you,” says Sarah. Reach for a creamy formula in a rose, peach or berry shade to effortlessly enhance your natural flush. Then blend the colour across your eyes and lips using the warmth of your fingertips. It’s a quick, easy look that’s perfect for on-the-go mornings and after-work touch-ups.

Layer on lip gloss

Winter brings cooler temperatures and less moisture in the air, which can be drying on our lips. So Sarah turns to a moisture-packed, highly pigmented gloss that will protect the lips as well as impart gorgeous colour. “While you may need to touch up a little more than with a long-lasting lipstick, you’ll protect that delicate skin and feel more comfortable,” says Sarah, adding: “Lip glosses aren’t made like they used to be – you can now get all the hydrating benefits without worrying about hair sticking to your lips.” Complete the pared-back look with a subtle hit of highlighter, a neutral eye and a swipe of mascara or elongating false lashes.

hair hacks 7 cool-change

Tame your flyaways and get healthy, glossy strands this winter with our expert tips and tricks

Mask must-haves

As cool winds, frosty temperatures and dry air set in, our hair faces a unique set of challenges.

“Cold air contains less moisture than warm air, which dries your hair out. This makes it weak, brittle and prone to frizz,” explains Priceline Beauty Advisor Nada Ibrahim. But before you hide your locks under a beanie, it is possible to bring your hair back to its smooth, shiny best. Navigate dry, dull strands, frizz and flyaways with these clever hair hacks.

Hack #1: Try midnight masking

“When your hair needs a hydration boost, try sleeping in a hair mask,” suggests Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw. “Just wash your hair before bed, comb through a moisturising mask and pop on a shower cap to protect your pillowcase.” When you wake up, wash your hair like normal and you’ll have smooth, hydrated hair.

Priceline Beauty Advisor Xanthe

Panella says one of her favourite hair masks is the multi-tasking Garnier Fructis Hair Food Watermelon. “It’s super hydrating but doesn’t weigh down fine hair,” she shares. “It’s also versatile – you can use it as a conditioner, a mask or out of the shower as a leave-in conditioner.”

Add shine: georgiemane 10 Minute Hair Mask 220mL, $49.99.

Hack #2: Mix and match your haircare

Do you have a dry, itchy scalp and damaged hair? Or oily roots and dry ends? With so many targeted varieties of haircare products available, it’s easy to customise your regimen for maximum results. “Don’t be afraid to tailor your shampoo and conditioner to suit your needs,” advises Sarah. Try a clarifying, dandruff or growth shampoo to address your concerns at the scalp, and “use an extramoisturising shampoo and conditioner with argan oil, avocado oil, macadamia oil or coconut oil to nourish and rehydrate the ends,” adds Nada.

SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Conditioner 384mL, $23.50. 2. HASK Argan Oil Repairing Conditioner 355mL, $17. 3. Growth Bomb Conditioner 300mL, $24.99.

Hack #3: Tame flyaways

“Flyaways can happen for a few reasons,” says Sarah. “If you have shorter hairs that want to stand up, add a little hairspray and use your hands to smooth them down. It can work wonders, and will keep the body in your hair.” Just look for a ‘brushable’ hairspray for flexible hold that’s not stiff or sticky. If you get frizz towards the ends of your hair, “a smoothing cream or serum and a natural boar-bristle brush will help give you a sleek style,” says Sarah. Nada’s top tip is to blow-dry your hair immediately after towel-drying, then “double it up with a flat iron and anti-frizz serum so your hair will stay frizz-free for longer”.

Your sleek toolkit

Hack #4: Slick it back

As hair wash day approaches, Sarah suggests making the most of your dirty hair – and its natural oils – by pulling it back into a sleek bun. For added hold, “a gel or pomade can look beautiful in medium or thick hair,” she says. “But if you have fine hair, be careful you don’t use too much gel, or your hair will look wet or become too piece-y.” Instead, reach for your trusty hairspray. “Brush your hair into place, apply your product, then finish with a fine-tooth comb to smooth flyaways and perfect your hairline,” says Sarah.

Hack #5: Revisit retro rollers

With ’90s-inspired, bouncy blow-drys trending, now’s the time to reacquaint yourself with velcro rollers. Start by applying a volumising mousse or spray to wet hair, then blow-dry while tousling with your hands to give roots a lift. Next, use a round brush to smooth out one section at a time before you coil your hair into the rollers from ends to roots. “As your hair cools, this will set the waves and give your hair extra hold,” says Sarah. Not only will you achieve bombshell waves, but your voluminous hair will wear beautifully throughout the week, too.

9. Freestyle Self Gripping Rollers 24mm 5 Pack, $4.99.

Hack #6: Multi-task with dry shampoo

Your go-to dry shampoo isn’t just for refreshing days-old hair, says Sarah. “A spritz of dry shampoo at the roots can help give your hair volume.” Just spray around your crown and hairline, then brush through for weightless movement. This proactive dry shampoo technique will also soak up excess oil as the days go on, so your hair stays fresher for longer.

10. Batiste Volume Dry Shampoo 200mL, $17.49. 11. Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk 150mL, $16.99. 12. HASK Coconut Dry Shampoo 122g, $12.

Hack #7: Seal split ends in an instant

“Split ends are like a rope that’s unravelling,” explains Sarah. “Those little ends catch on each other and can start to look dry and tangled.”

A fresh haircut is the only true fix for split ends, but if you can’t make it in for a trim, “a moisturising cream or oil will help smooth your ends so they’re less noticeable”. Just run a pump through your mid-lengths and ends after styling your hair and you’ll see soft, high-shine hair in one easy step.

3. Moisturising lip product 1. Hydrating primer

Swap your usual primer for one that brings an added hit of moisture. “Our skin is drier in winter, so a skincareinfused primer will hydrate and protect during the cold weather,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Xanthe Panella. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, squalane and niacinamide for optimal hydration.

Try: e.l.f Power Grip Primer + 4% Niacinamide, $24.

2. Dewy cheek colour

“Change your makeup by switching to cream products instead of powder,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Hannah Joy Smith. “They look more natural and less dry on the skin.” Or try the new breed of cheek oils for an equally dewy effect – apply to the apples of your cheeks for a fresh, youthful look.

Try: Australis Blush Glaze in Pink Pop, $16.99.

A tinted lip balm or oil is a great option in winter. “It’ll help soothe, moisturise and protect lips against the harsher conditions,” says Xanthe. “When you’re battling wind and cold outside and dry, heated air inside, there’s always a need for some extra hydration.”

Try: Revolution Rehab Plump & Tint Lip Blush, $12.

A: The skin on our necks isn’t quite like the skin on our face: it has less collagen, elastin and natural oils, making it particularly prone to ageing. So if you’re seeing fine lines or sagging skin, a serum or cream with peptides and amino acids is the perfect choice to help firm and lift your neck.

3 ways to calm your complexion

30 Y OU winter 2023

your

Whether you’re seeing spots, are forever flushed or have been overzealous with powerful actives, you’ve probably witnessed the skin’s natural repair process in action. “Our skin is our first line of defence, which makes it vulnerable to the outside world,” explains Janis McNicholas, head of medical sales and training at Eau Thermale Avène. So when we’re under fire from stress, UV exposure and pollution, inflammation is triggered – it’s designed, after all, to fend off intruders and assist in the repair process. But this response is also behind skin conditions such as acne and rosacea – as well as the itchy, burning sensation that lets you know you’ve compromised your skin barrier. If these symptoms are inflaming your skin frustrations, you’re not alone. “Acne can be an isolating experience,” says Rachael Wilde, co-founder of skincare brand tbh. “My approach for dealing with my acne was to punish my skin into behaving, but our skin isn’t something we need to ‘fix’.” With a skin-supportive mindset and soothing staples at hand, you too can calm your complexion in three targeted steps.

Treat your breakouts

“Factors such as excess sebum production, bacterial infection, inflammation and hormonal changes can be behind breakouts,” says Rachael. She suggests starting your acne journey by consulting a medical professional. Next, spot-treat acne with tbh.’s Acne Hack Spot Treatment. Its patented technology goes beneath skin’s biofilm – where acne-causing bacteria thrive – to target breakouts without compromising the rest of the complexion. Paired with lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas, your spots should start to improve. “Just give your products enough time to work their magic on your skin,” Rachael adds.

Soothe your sensitivity

“Sensitive skin is vulnerable to external aggressors and can become uncomfortable,” says Janis, who recommends keeping your skincare simple whether your complexion is just experiencing the winter blues or is sensitive year-round. “Less is more!” If you’re feeling dry, red or itchy, Janis suggests a nonaggressive, creamy cleanser, then a soothing spritz of Avène’s signature Thermal Spring Water, followed by a recovery balm to comfort skin and reduce redness.

4. Cleanse: The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser 150mL, $19.70.

5. Treat: Avène Thermal Spring Water 300mL, $25.99.

Restore your barrier

“The skin barrier is a protective layer made up of lipids and proteins,” explains Rachael. “It helps keep the skin hydrated and prevents the penetration of harmful pollutants and unwanted bacteria.” If your skin is bumpy, red and unusually sensitive, you might have overdone it. Instead of persisting with high-powered skincare such as exfoliating acids, retinol or vitamin C, press pause. Switch to hydrating serums and barrier-restoring creams with skin-strengthening ingredients such as niacinamide and cica. After a week or two, your skin should return to its happy, healthy state and you can slowly reintroduce actives tailored to your skin concerns.

From your décolletage to your feet, these skincare solutions will keep your body feeling comfortable all winter long

Let’s be honest: your facial skincare routine might be sorted, but when was the last time you gave the rest of your body a second thought? This season, we’re shining the spotlight on bodycare with expert tips on five common skin concerns and how to solve them.

Dryness

Cold weather and blustering winds can wreak havoc on our skin, even under all those layers. So now’s the time to be vigilant with moisturising. “The best time to apply your body moisturiser is straight after a shower, when your skin is still soft and damp – but not wet!” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Hannah Joy Smith. Give your body some extra TLC by adding in a rich body oil, which can help prevent your skin from losing moisture.

Keratosis pilaris

Keratosis pilaris – also known as KP or ‘chicken skin’ – describes clusters of rough, tiny, white or reddish bumps that flare up on the skin. It’s caused by an excess amount of the skin protein keratin, which blocks pores. Fortunately, with a little special treatment, it is manageable. Keep the bumps at bay with regular (but gentle) exfoliation – Priceline Beauty Advisor Xanthe Panella suggests twice a week. Use an exfoliating mitt as well as a chemical exfoliant containing actives such as AHA for maximum impact.

Q+A Apple AHA Exfoliating Gel 75mL, $17.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is caused by excess melanin in the skin and can be a result of a number of factors, including sun damage. These darker patches can crop up anywhere on your body, from your stomach to your underarms. With reduced sun exposure, winter is the perfect time to tackle these ‘sun spots’. Xanthe’s choice? Glycolic acid, which will scrub off the top layer of skin and help remove the excess pigment. Products pumped with peptides will also help even skin tone and inhibit any further development of pigmentation.

3. The Jojoba Company Pigmentation Oil 30mL, $42.99.

Eczema

Eczema is a common skin condition that tends to be at its worst in winter. It causes itchy, flaky skin and painful inflammation, so products packed with hydrating ingredients will bring relief. For a topical solution, our hero ingredient is colloidal oatmeal, which is a natural anti-inflammatory. “It’s a super soother known for calming irritated and itchy skin,” explains Bree Johnson, co-founder of Everyday by Frank Body. Or try a targeted probiotic, which will work from within to soothe symptoms.

Multi-tasking heroes skin

Priceline’s Beauty Advisors are calling it: overcomplicated routines are out and streamlined skincare is in

38 Y OU winter 2023

First there was ‘slugging’, the act of slathering on Vaseline to lock in skincare. Then came ‘skin cycling’, a routine that rotates through chemical exfoliation, retinol and recovery across four nights. Now, we can breathe a sigh of relief because the next trend to sweep our skincare routines is ‘skinimalism’.

“Not everyone wants a seven-step skincare routine – it can be expensive and time-consuming,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Xanthe Panella, who advocates for a less-is-more approach. “A few key products can level up your skincare routine.” The trick is to enlist multi-tasking products that will do double (or triple) duty.

A hardworking cleanser

Instead of two dedicated cleansers to remove makeup and refresh your skin, reach for a two-in-one formula. A hydrating cleanser with a cream or jelly texture can be applied to damp skin to melt away makeup, then lathered to wash away impurities.

An all-in-one serum

While it’s tempting to try all the new serums, “using too many products can damage your skin’s moisture barrier if you’re not using them correctly,” says Xanthe. So resist the urge and commit to a serum that targets all your skin concerns simultaneously – it’ll speed up your routine and alleviate any skincare layering confusion.

CeraVe Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Cleanser 236mL, $23.99.

“If you’re concerned with visible fine lines and wrinkles, the No7 products are perfect,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Hannah Joy Smith, who suggests the Line Correcting Booster Serum to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in one step. When it comes to tackling dryness, Hannah says, “I love how quickly hyaluronic acid absorbs into my skin. It’s so lightweight and hydrating.” L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Filler 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Serum is even formulated with two forms of hyaluronic acid to boost skin water retention deep down while plumping fine lines on the skin’s surface.

“If you experience pigmentation, try using ingredients like vitamin C or niacinamide,” adds Hannah. In one ‘super serum’, Olay pairs the two actives together to brighten dark spots and boost radiance.

A just-right moisturiser

Swap separate day and night formulas for a dream cream that combines the best of both worlds. Look for lightweight hydrators such as vitamin E so your moisturiser will deliver lasting hydration without feeling too heavy, as well as added benefits such as collagen-boosting peptides or antioxidants that fight free radicals to get the maximum out of your cream.

A skincare-spiked SPF

No matter how rushed your routine is, SPF is a must. For healthy, glowing skin long-term, “a moisturiser with SPF or a hydrating facial sunscreen means you only need one product in the morning,” says Hannah, who suggests The Quick Flick’s triple threat product Quick Screen – an SPF, moisturiser and primer in one.

Find your glow

Unlock bright, bouncy skin in three streamlined steps, with the help of Clear Skincare’s head of training, Emma Stewardson

1. Exfoliate

“During the winter months, our skin can become drier and appear dull –and concerns such as pigmentation can look more prominent,” explains Emma. By exfoliating regularly, you can encourage skin cell turnover, which will bring the glow back to your complexion. “Lifting dry cells with chemical exfoliation also allows your skincare to absorb better,” Emma adds.

Try: Clear Skincare Lactic Acid Serum 15mL, $45.

2. Revitalise

“Although our skin naturally renews, the process slows as we age. Peels help reveal new skin cells to revitalise the complexion,” says Emma. “A gentle glycolic acid peel every week or two is a great starting point.” You can then customise the key active and strength of your peel to your concerns: lactic acid for dry skin, salicylic acid to clarify oily skin or vitamin C to brighten.

Try: Clear Skincare 2% Salicylic Toner 125mL, $35. Clear Skincare Hydrapeel Serum 15mL, $45.

3. Recover

“After exfoliating your skin, it’s important to pare back the active ingredients,” warns Emma, who recommends using a peptide-based serum to soothe and repair as well as a cream formulated with hyaluronic acid to help hydrate and protect the skin. To maintain your glowing results, “don’t forget to use sunscreen every day,” she adds.

Try: Clear Skincare Copper Peptide Serum 15mL, $45.

Wake-upshake-up

Never get up on the wrong side of the bed again with our hacks for waking up energised every morning

For many of us, each morning feels like a battle with our circadian rhythm and it’s a daily struggle to find the willpower to get out of bed. This winter, instead of hitting snooze (again), hit reset on your routine and put into practice some healthy habits that will have you making the most of your mornings.

Consistency is key

We’ve been told since childhood to go to bed at a reasonable hour, but our wake-up time is just as important when it comes to feeling rested. Support your circadian rhythm by setting a realistic routine that allows for seven to nine hours of quality sleep every night and enough time to carry out your full routine in the morning, whatever that might look like for you. On weekends, sleep experts recommend not deviating from your wake-up time by more than an hour –it’ll make it that much harder to get out of bed come Monday.

Break the snooze cycle

It can be tempting to hit snooze when your alarm goes off, but research shows that those extra minutes of dozing can be disastrous for sleep habits and how energised you feel when you do finally leave the comfort of bed. For some extra morning motivation, try disabling the snooze option or forcing yourself to get out of bed by putting your alarm in another room.

priceline.com.au 45 RENEW

Rise and shine

Studies suggest that exposure to light plays a crucial role in regulating our circadian rhythm. So it’s no wonder that during the darker winter months, it can be harder to get out of bed. To help boost your energy, try switching on a warm light first thing in the morning or opening the blinds if you’re lucky enough to wake with the sun. Priceline Pharmacist

Jane McLean says it’s also a great excuse to commit to an early-morning workout. “Exercising in the morning has the added benefit of introducing sunlight shortly after you wake up and preparing you for the day ahead,” she says. “A light aerobic exercise such as walking or yoga is great at this time.”

Rest easy

An energised morning actually starts the night before: implementing a soothing bedtime routine will help you wake up feeling refreshed. Keep the routine simple with the goal of gradually winding down your mind and body for optimal rest. Some ideas include sipping herbal tea, taking a bath or shower infused with lavender essential oils, avoiding screens and resetting the mind by meditating or journaling about your day.

4 ways to level up your AM routine

1. Make your bed

Yes, it’s a cliché, but studies show that ticking off this chore will help you feel accomplished and start your day on a productive note.

2. Delay the caffeine

We usually wake up dehydrated; replenish with a tall glass of water instead of immediately reaching for your coffee machine. “Even though many people start their day with a cup of coffee, it is not the most ideal time to drink it,” says Jane. “Our cortisol levels peak in the morning, so this hormone should provide us with enough energy to get up and start moving. Wait around 90 minutes after rising to have your coffee.”

3. Don’t skip breakfast

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it can be hard to get the motivation to make a nutritious meal when you’re still waking up. Try prepping overnight oats or a smoothie the night before, or laying out your supplements.

4. Take a moment for self-care

The ritual of washing your face and prepping your skin for the day can be the ultimate pick-me-up. Whether your routine has two steps or 10, taking the time to nourish your skin is a no-brainer.

Your vitamin D cheat sheet

How to make sure you’re getting enough of the bone-boosting nutrient, especially in winter

48 Y OU winter 2023

How can I make sure I’m getting enough?

Need

Help support your vitamin D levels with these products

What is vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that controls your calcium levels. Your body produces it naturally when it’s exposed to sunlight, yet surprisingly, despite Australia’s sunny climate, it’s estimated that more than one in three people have some level of deficiency (and it’s especially a concern in the darker winter months).

Why is it so important?

Thanks to its role in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, vitamin D is essential for the development of bones and teeth. If you’re not getting enough, your bone density will suffer, putting you at risk of fractures. “Other benefits associated with vitamin D are a reduced risk of chronic disease, improved immune function, mood regulation and reduced risk of depression,” adds Priceline Pharmacist Matthew Golden.

How do I know if I’m deficient?

Spending a lot of time indoors, having darker skin and living in a highpollution environment are just some of the factors that can compromise how much vitamin D you absorb from the sun. Ageing can impact levels, too. As for the symptoms of a deficiency, Matthew says they can be hard to identify. “They could include frequent illness, fatigue, impaired wound healing and bone loss. As these symptoms are non-specific to vitamin D deficiency, the most effective way to identify a deficiency is to get a blood test.”

While sun exposure is the easiest way to increase your levels of vitamin D, don’t be tempted to bake yourself in the sun – at the very least, it’ll cause premature skin ageing. Instead, it’s all about careful, considered exposure. The Cancer Council recommends that when the UV index is below three (as is usually the case during winter in southern parts of Australia), you should spend some time outdoors during the middle of the day with some skin exposed. When the UV index is above three, a few minutes outdoors each day is all you need to maintain healthy vitamin D levels. Keep in mind that your body can only take in a certain amount of vitamin D at a time, so exposing your skin to the sun for long periods is not only pointless, but dangerous. Also pay attention to your diet. Foods that contain vitamin D (although not enough to rely on them alone) include salmon, canned tuna, mushrooms, egg yolks and fortified products such as milk, cereal and orange juice.

Can supplements help?

Supplements can help increase your vitamin D levels. They either contain vitamin D2 (sourced from fungus or yeast) or D3 (derived from lanolin in sheep’s wool). “You can take one 1000IU vitamin D supplement daily, or speak to a Priceline Pharmacist to get a 7000IU supplement that you take once a week, which you may find more convenient,” says Matthew. Just make sure you follow the advice of a Doctor or Pharmacist because it is possible to get too much vitamin D through supplementation.

main character

Harness that energy

The latest mindset hack for boosting your confidence is as playful as it is effective

50 Y OU winter 2023

Consider the last time you watched a great romcom or true-crime thriller. Chances are, there was a main character who you were rooting for to succeed. Get the guy. Solve the crime. This is the idea that underpins a confidence hack gaining pace with TikTokers called ‘main character energy’. In a nutshell, it challenges us to put our own needs first, prioritise self-care and take control of our inner narrative so we’re really supporting our own success. Devotees say seeing life through this lens can be a shortcut to self-empowerment and improved confidence. Ready to become the main character in your story? Try these tips to step into the spotlight.

Switch up the script with positive self-talk

The way we talk to ourselves matters. Research shows that positive self-talk can boost self-confidence, reduce stress and make you feel more in control of your life. All you need to do is repeat a few choice words. Queen of affirmations Louise Hay coined many powerful mantras, but we suggest starting with the simplest: “I’m good enough.” Remember, you’re the narrator of your own life.

Be selective with your co-stars

Whether we realise it or not, the people we surround ourselves with play a major role in the person we become. If you’re feeling stuck or dissatisfied with your life, do a social audit: who do you spend the most time with, and how do they make you feel? Seek out people who inspire you and make you feel supported, seen and heard. Then limit time with anyone who drains you.

Rewrite the narrative through journaling

The act of putting your feelings on paper may seem daunting, but it can be one of the most impactful self-care activities. Journaling is a way of processing the highlights and lowlights of our lives and determining our next steps, helping to reduce stress and boost our mood in the process. Not sure where to start? Try using prompts with a focus on self-improvement or simply write a short list of things you’re grateful for today.

Take each chapter as it comes

The hero’s journey is filled with ups and downs, plot twists and plateaus – and every moment of the adventure is important to the story as a whole. Embrace each chapter of your life fully, maximising every moment and working through the challenges that’ll help you build resilience. Enjoy the magic of the mundane: each moment, no matter how small, is a key part of your character development.

Fit and

soccer superstars

Priceline is a proud partner of the Matildas, the Australian women’s soccer team that’s full of strong, determined role models. In the lead-up to the Women’s World Cup, starting on July 20, we chatted to power players Charlotte Grant, Mackenzie Arnold and Tameka Yallop about harnessing your passion and breaking boundaries in sport.

On staying positive

“It’s so important to surround yourself with positive people,” says Charlotte. “Don’t let anyone stand in the way of what you want to achieve and always believe in yourself.”

“The spirit of being around such a strong and supportive team is like an aura of empowerment,” says Tameka. “You really do feel like you can achieve your biggest dreams when you’re surrounded by [a great] team.”

On sacrifices and building resilience

“There are a lot of sacrifices that you have to make to do this job,” admits Mackenzie. “But the experiences and the people you meet and the goals you achieve along the way always remind you that it’s worth it.”

“Learning about yourself comes after a big pressure situation, then you find the time to reflect,” says Tameka. “[I’ve learnt] that nothing can hold you back if you have the determination and focus.”

On finding balance

“At the end of the day, your happiness comes first,” shares Charlotte. “When you’re happy, it radiates onto other people and shows in your life and family. It’s important to have a balance and have time to yourself so you can truly enjoy what you do.”

“Doing something low-key with my family or friends is usually what makes me the happiest and recharges me for the next day,” says Mackenzie.

“Balancing work and family can be difficult,” says Tameka. “I think there will be times when you need to put family first, and times when your family make sacrifices to support you and your work. There isn’t any right answer. It’s just a willingness to adapt and make changes when needed.”

On women in sport

“It’s so important that women’s football is getting more exposure – you can’t be what you can’t see,” says Charlotte.

“The best support comes from allowing young women the chance to succeed and fail in sport, and know that the community will always be there no matter what,” shares Tameka.

Take it slow

Savour a steady pace this winter with mindful reminders and sensory self-care

Time out

Created in response to the frantic tempo of modern life and our obsession with productivity, the ‘slow living’ movement embraces mindfulness and encourages us to step off the treadmill and take a minute. With this philosophy in mind, we asked wellness expert Paul von Bergen, founder of the acclaimed Billabong Retreat on the outskirts of Sydney, to give us his top tips for holistic self-care.

Check in with yourself

Our demanding routines can have us on autopilot, going through the motions without a second thought. During busy times, simply taking a moment to consider how you’re feeling can help you make small, positive adjustments. “Our physical sensations, emotions and patterns of thinking can help us realise when we are moving out of balance,” says Paul.

Stop doing all the things

Society is obsessed with getting things done and ticking tasks off the to-do list. So it’s no surprise that we’re often uncomfortable with stillness and feel guilty taking time to do nothing. But it’s well worth pushing through the discomfort. “You’ll be surprised at the ideas and insights you have when you let yourself do nothing but rest.”

Heighten your senses

Harnessing the power of relaxing aromas can bring a feeling of calm to your day without hitting pause on your routine. Next time you’re doing laundry or tackling your inbox, surround yourself with the scents of lavender and chamomile and you’ll feel significantly more serene.

Master mindfulness

One of the best ways to embrace slow living is by practising mindfulness daily. “This is the ancient art of paying attention to our own intentions,” says Paul. Not sure where to start? Immersing yourself in your surroundings with a nature walk will help you reconnect and recharge. Also try noticing different sensations, such as water running over your hands or a breeze against your face.

Find balance

Just like much of the natural world goes dormant in winter, it’s human nature to retreat inwards during the cooler months. However, you can find comfort without isolating yourself. “Don’t let winter be a period of inactivity – the season can be a time for quiet contemplation but also beautiful gatherings with friends who inspire and encourage us.”

Rest, recover and repair

In three easy steps, you can boost your health and fitness for the long-term

When it comes to staying fit and healthy, it’s not just exercise that’s important – what you do between workouts matters, too. Once you slip off your trainers, there’s a host of steps you can take to improve your recovery and support your health and wellbeing in the long run. And the good news is that some of these activities are as easy as switching on Netflix (yes, really).

“During exercise, our muscles experience microscopic tears that require our system to repair them. It’s the cycle of exercise and repair that ultimately leads to improved muscle function,” explains Priceline Pharmacist Matthew Golden. “Focusing on recovery immediately after exercise and between training sessions is crucial for optimising performance, energy levels, reducing the risk of injury and promoting overall health and wellbeing.” Here’s how to do it.

Rest

It may seem counterintuitive, but rest days are a crucial part of any exercise regimen. By giving your body a break, you’ll relieve sore muscles and reduce your risk of injury. It’s especially important as we age – the older we get, the more tired we tend to feel after a workout. “As we age, biological processes become less efficient, resulting in longer recovery times, reduced muscle mass and strength, increased risk of injury and reduced flexibility and mobility,” says Matthew. Aim to have one rest day per week in which you focus on relaxing both your mind and body. Read a book, catch up on your favourite TV series or take time out for meditation. Or try running a bath using magnesium salts, which can help soothe tired muscles while promoting relaxation.

Recover

Helping your body recover after exercise begins with a post-workout cool down. Stretching and doing other slow movements for five to 10 minutes can work wonders for preventing injury and muscle stiffness and improving your performance over time (meaning you’re more likely to keep up the activity for longer).

A heat pack is another beneficial tool, particularly if you suffer from chronic pain. The heat promotes blood flow to the area, helping to soothe muscles and heal damaged tissue. Getting enough magnesium (potentially with the support of a supplement) can also work to minimise muscle cramping. And don’t forget to replace the fluids you sweated out, because dehydration can cause fatigue and prevent your mind and body from functioning at their best. Consume plenty of water, and look to electrolyte drinks if you require an extra boost. “You need to replenish the electrolytes, energy and water lost during exercise as quickly as possible,” says Matthew. “Consuming electrolyte drinks before, during and after exercise will stop the body from becoming dehydrated.”

Repair

Having a protein drink straight after physical activity can enhance muscle growth, which is particularly important as you get older. “Protein is essential for building and repairing muscles following exercise,” says Matthew. “Protein powders provide a convenient option for increasing intake, but should not replace whole, nutrientdense foods in the diet completely.” Protein powders can also assist with healing any injuries you may

How to boost your kids’ immunity this cold and flu season – and relieve the symptoms when illness hits

1. Increase their vitamins

To reduce the chances of your kids getting sick this winter, look to foods such as berries and citrus fruit for a dose of vitamin C. If your kids are picky eaters, consider a supplement for extra support (they won’t need much convincing to take a vitamin gummy, which looks and tastes like a lolly but delivers a powerful immunity boost).

Try: Pentavite Daily Immune Support Gummies 60 Gummies, $15.99.

Inner Health Immune Booster Kids 60g, $29.99. Life-Space Children

Immune Support Probiotic 60g, $41.99.

2. Focus on prevention

3. Soothe the symptoms

It’s also important to teach your children about good hygiene from an early age – washing their hands regularly, coughing and sneezing into their elbow, and using (then disposing of) tissues. A flu shot is also crucial. “One of the best ways to keep your kids healthy is to ensure they are up-to-date with their vaccinations – especially the flu vaccine, which is recommended for everyone over six months of age to be given each year,” says Priceline Pharmacist Megan Kazantzis.

It’s a good idea to always have a supply of medicines on hand so you can relieve a range of symptoms when illness strikes your family. “For fever, aches and pains, including a sore throat, ibuprofen and paracetamol are great to help kids feel better,” says Megan. “Saline nasal sprays and drops are also good at reducing congestion and a runny nose.”
