I

f the marina proposed to be built in Puerto Viejo de Limón actually comes to fruition, the unique flavor of one of Costa Rica’s signature vacation destinations will be lost forever.

The 100-slip marina would be located in the bay off the center of town, complete with a fuel dock, offices, breakwaters and a commercial village. Boosters contend that the marina will bring 2,000 new jobs to the economically depressed area.

However, many locals would be adversely affected by the marina. Most local residents do not have the training to work the jobs the marina would offer. With extremely limited educational opportunities in Limón, these positions would likely go to outsiders. Oceanographer Guiellermo Quirós has stated that the breakwaters could effectively destroy Puerto Viejo’s excellent surf, including world-famous Salsa Brava.

As the waves go, surf camps and board rental shops will go out of business. And the project includes covering the coral reef with fill. Not only would the physical landscape of a traditional Afro-Caribbean village be irreparably altered, but the ecological landscape would suffer, too. Many tourists who flock to the region for its intense biological and cultural beauty would simply go elsewhere. Instead of an inimitable microcosm on the Caribbean, Puerto Viejo would transform into a homogenous marina community.

i la marina que se propone construir en Puerto Viejo de Limón se convierte en una realidad, el sabor único de uno de los destinos turísticos más destacados de Costa Rica se perderá para siempre.

La marina de 100 embarcaderos se ubicaría en la bahía del centro del pueblo, y contaría con un muelle de abastecimiento de combustible, oficinas, rompeolas y un centro comercial. Quienes están a favor de la construcción de esta marina mencionan que se crearán dos mil nuevos empleos en esta área de poco desarrollo económico. Sin embargo, muchos habitantes locales se verían afectados de manera negativa por la marina. Muchas de estas personas no cuentan con la preparación adecuada para poder llevar a cabo el tipo de trabajos que ofrecería la marina. Debido a las muchas limitaciones educativas que hay en Limón, estos puestos de trabajo quedarían en manos de extranjeros. Además, el oceanógrafo Guillermo Quirós menciona que el rompeolas destruiría el excelente flujo natural de olas de Puerto Viejo, incluyendo el de Salsa Brava, ola de fama mundial. Si desaparecen las olas, con ellas desaparecerían los campamentos para surfeadores y las tiendas de renta de tablas, y con ello, empleos. El proyecto también incluye cubrir con relleno el arrecife de coral. No solamente se alteraría irreparablemente el paisaje tradicional de este pueblo afro-caribeño, sino también el paisaje ecológico. Muchos turistas que visitan la zona atraídos por su intensa belleza natural y cultural sencillamente se marcharían a otra parte. En lugar de un microcosmos caribeño inimitable, Puerto Viejo se transformaría en una comunidad homogénea al estilo marina.

After traveling to Puerto Viejo and speaking with tourists and residents, I found an intense resistance to the marina. Outside of a few people with a monetary stake in the project, it seems like nobody wants the marina in town.

Nearly 6,000 people have signed the petition on www. salvemospuertoviejo.com (meaning Let’s Save Puerto Viejo).

I tried speaking with Jan Kalina, who represents the company El Grupo Caribeño, which is developing the marina.

He curtly told me that he had nothing to say, and that I try again in a month or two, “when the final plans are ready.” That was all the information he offered.

Luego de viajar a Puerto Viejo y de hablar con turistas y habitantes locales he encontrado una intensa resistencia hacia la marina. A parte de unas pocas personas con intereses económicos en el proyecto, parece que nadie quiere tener esa marina en el pueblo. Cerca de 6 000 personas han firmado una petición en el sitio de “Salvemos a Puerto Viejo” en www.salvemospuertoviejo. com.

Traté de hablar con Jan Kalina, quien representa a la compañía El Grupo Caribeño, que desarrolla los planes para construir la marina. Sin embargo, de una manera seca y cortante me respondió “no tengo nada que decir, trate de nuevo dentro de uno o dos meses cuando los planes finales estén listos”. Esa fue toda la información que ofreció.

El Grupo Caribeño no tiene sitio en Internet, no ha publicado ningún número de teléfono ni ha compartido públicamente ningún plano de la construcción. Mientras que la comunidad local se ha puesto en contra de esta marina, quienes están interesados económicamente en este proyecto se encuentran misteriosamente en el silencio.

Esta marina no es para Puerto Viejo.

Costa Rica Recognized for Sustainable Tourism

Premian A Costa Rica Por Turismo Sostenible

Costa Rica was awarded first place in the contest “Tourism for Everyone” for the country’s implementation of the program Certification of Sustainable Tourism (CST). The recognition was given during the 3rd Latin American Virtual Congress on Business Competitiveness and Tourism Destinations.

The award was given after a jury evaluated the integral vision and feasibility of implementation of this program, with an emphasis on high-quality, sustainable tourism. Additionally, the designation is designed to help stimulate further action in sustainable tourism that will allow the activity to grow not only in Costa Rica, but can be replicated in other Latin American countries.

There are currently 94 businesses participating in the CST program, including tour operators and hotels.

Car-rental agencies are expected to be able to join the program soon.

Costa Rica fue galardonado en el primer lugar del concurso “Turismo para Todos” por la puesta en marcha de su programa de Certificación de Sostenibilidad Turística (CST). El reconocimiento fue otorgado en el marco del III Congreso Virtual Latinoamericano de Competitividad de Empresas y Destinos Turísticos.

El premio fue otorgado, luego de que el jurado evaluara la visión integral y factibilidad de implementación de este programa con miras a promover un turismo sustentable y de calidad. Además se indicó que la designación se da como una forma de estimular las acciones en el campo del turismo sostenible que permitan un crecimiento de la actividad en Costa Rica, pero además considerando que el esquema de este programa puede replicarse en cada país de la región latinoamericana.

Actualmente existen 94 empresas entre tour operadoras y hoteles que se encuentran funcionando bajo el esquema del CST y se espera que pronto puedan integrarse las primeras del sector de rent a car.

R Traveler was present once again at the 24th edition of EXPOTUR, Costa Rica’s largest annual tourism trade show.

This year, nearly 300 businesses from Costa Rica and the rest of Central America exhibited their wares to international wholesalers in the travel sector. The Costa Rican Association of Tourism Professionals (ACOPROT), which created and organizes EXPOTUR, has affirmed that they are working towards designing a 25th edition of EXPOTUR that will “offer profound variations and innovations which will set the benchmark for us to adapt to the worldwide tendencies and requirements of the tourism industry,” according to Patricia Duar, executive director for ACOPROT. As part of the pre-circuit tour, the Association of Tour Operators in Fortuna organized an event at Hotel Los Lagos, where wholesalers had the chance to get to know this popular destination even better.

eleste Mountain Lodge offers an extremely well-done lodging option near Río Celeste. Each of this newly built building’s eighteen rooms has a great view, private bath, hot water and a surprising mix of rustic-yet-contemporary décor. Taken as a whole, this is a relaxingly clean, sober family-oriented environment. The owners, a Frenchman and a Brazilian woman, take pride in their detailed, pleasant service that will certainly make you feel right at home.

The hotel’s unique characteristics do not end there. It is worth mentioning their delicious “New Costa Rican Cuisine,” as the owners call it, which consists of a balanced blend of ingredients, many of which are cultivated in the community, and internationally flavored culinary secrets. Also outstanding are Celeste Mountain Lodge’s environmental practices. The owners make a palpable effort to engage in sustainable tourism. The building itself was made from recycled materials and scrap and plantation wood. Water is heated via solar panels and the hotel produces its own biogas for cooking. The décor comes from the owners’ own ingenuity in using reused and recycled materials. There is an endemic-species reforestation project, as well.

The hotel sits on seven hectares, three of which are protected primary forest. You can find hot showers in the gardens, a reading area with a fireplace, panoramic views of Tenorio Volcano, and a full-service restaurant (three meals daily are included in the stay). And, of course, we cannot forget about the owners’ affable attention.

n spite of the fact that my expectations, fed by excellent references, were high, the panoramic natural beauty that Río Celeste brings to the table left me astounded. The human mind cannot conceive of such a level of magnificence and purity until it has seen it. The name Río Celeste, which means Blue River, is obvious in meaning but leaves a lot to be desired in terms of describing the splendor that springs from this corner of Costa Rica.

Located in the canton of Upala, in Alajuela province, and within Tenorio National Park, Río Celeste is the area’s main attraction, overshadowing even nearby Tenorio Volcano. And while the massif contributes to the river’s rich habitat and provides the minerals for the water’s intense colors, the river by itself would be worth the trip.

My daughter Juliana Madrigal, ten years old, opines that “the river is sky-blue because a cloud got big and fat from eating too much, it fell from the sky full of blue water, exploded, and then the river was born.

The scientific truth, however, tells us that there is a chemical reaction between the water and calcium carbonate and sulfur that come from Tenorio Volcano. The result is the spectacular shade of blue that you see in the river.

Tenorio National Park General Information Located between two cantons in two provinces, this park measures nearly 13,000 hectares, ranging in elevation from 700 meters to 1,916 meters above sea level.

The park’s main attractions are its volcanic cones, piroclastic cones, and the Río Celeste’s waterfalls and lagoon.

The park houses a number of life zones, including lowland pluvial montane forest, tropical rain forest and premontane forests. There is precipitation nearly year-round, except for March and April. The park’s average temperature is 23 degrees Celsius, but it varies with elevation.

The park offers a general information kiosk, potable water, restrooms, local guides, talks, and paths.

How to get there: From San José: Take the Pan-American Highway towards Liberia. Five kilometers after the city of Cañas, turn right and go 30 km until you get to Bijagua. Continue five kilometers east, where you{ll see signs for the park. Turn right here and drive around seven kilometers on a gravel road that will take you to the park entrance. It takes about 3:30 hours from Juan Santamaría International Airport in Alajuela.

From Liberia: Just an hour away from the White City.

From Arenal: 1:30 hours from Arenal Volcano. A four-wheeldrive vehicle with high clearance is recommended.

What to bring: Comfortable clothes that can get wet, tennis or hiking shoes, insect repellent, bathing suit, and water.

SH U T TL E S necen a temperaturas cálidas para hacer las delicias de los bañistas. Estas “piscinitas” son el único lugar del parque que admite el ingreso de bañistas a sus aguas y son un lugar de descanso obligatorio.

Una experiencia sensorial le espera en los borbotones. Estos son hirvientes aguas que lanzan al ambiente intensos aromas a minerales volcánicos que si usted percibe al inicio del recorrido pueden resultarle un poco ofensivos, pero que si usted los percibe después de tres horas de recorrido pueden despertarle el deseo de comer emparedado de atún con huevo duro.

El mirador es una plataforma edificada en un claro del bosque que da cara al volcán Tenorio y que nos permite disfrutarlo en todo su esplendor, además de darnos una oportunidad de descanso.

Mi sitio favorito es la laguna. Esta es un remanso de paz celeste, y es quizá el lugar donde se hace más evidente visual y olfativamente, la esencia del río. Las aguas del río reposan aquí y esa falta de movimiento permite admirar su color: un celeste intenso, profundo y sólido y el olor de sus componentes. Por el desconocimiento de la reacción que puedan provocar esas aguas a los humanos es prohibido bañarse en la laguna, sin embargo el contacto táctil con el agua se hace innecesario ante lo impactante de su belleza y quietud.

La catarata es un deslumbrante canto de agua con caída a una poza celeste, rodeada de vegetación y grandes piedras de río, donde como siempre se advierte, es mejor no bañarse y mucho menos colocarse bajo la catarata.

Si bien la catarata es uno de los primeros espectáculos a los que se tiene acceso durante el recorrido, los expertos aconsejan visitarla de último pues tanto el descenso como el ascenso hacia ella son bastante empinados y si se visita de primero las energías se pueden agotar antes de ver lo demás.

Río Celeste es uno de esos espectáculos en los que la naturaleza se luce creando en un solo lugar tantas maravillas: un volcán, un río celeste, un bosque, unas aguas termales. Sé que mis palabras cualesquiera que sean no le hacen justicia. Usted tiene que verlo y sentirlo.

driving. “Flying in Costa Rica allows valuable vacation time to be spent on the beaches, in the rainforest, touring the volcanoes or any of the other interests Costa Rica is known for,” says Art Dawley, President of Paradise Air, a San José-based domestic charter service.

“The views from the aircraft give you an idea as to how incredibly diverse the topography, climates and vegetation are. We can cross three different micro-climates in 45 minutes. This same trip by car would take six hours, minimum,” he adds.

Airline experts say that travelers should do their research before selecting a domestic carrier. Reliability, safety and comfort are the keys, according to Huntley. “If they get anything else, they got cheated,” he says. Dawley agrees. “The carrier [passengers] choose should have a great safety record, comply with international standards similar to those required in the U.S. and Europe, and offer excellent customer service.”

While regularly scheduled flights travel to main points of interest and generally offer cheaper fares for solo flyers, charter flights are another important travel segment.

Short travel times and flexibility are big selling points for charters.

“In most cases, travelers have a set amount of time for their experience in this beautiful country. They want to get to their destination as quickly as possible. After the experience of international flights, most people are not ready to go back to another airline counter, check their bags and go through more security checks,” states Dawley. And the freedom to travel wherever you want, whenever you want, is a big draw. “You decide when and where you want to go,” according to Huntley.

Domestic flights are allowed to take place in Costa Rica during daylight hours only, which is generally 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM year round.

Weather can be a factor, but normally is not. Costa Rica has two seasons, the wet (from May through November) and the dry (December to April). “The dry season usually offers clear skies and unlimited visibilities across the country,” says Dawley.

Although the Central Valley can have breezy conditions during the summer months, it very rarely affects flights. During the rainy season, travelers are advised to schedule their flights early in the day to avoid the afternoon showers.

osta Ballena, a region between the beach towns of Dominical and Ojochal, is becoming an increasingly popular beach destination. The name comes from Ballena National Marine Park, which features a unique land formation called a tómbolo which, from the air, looks like a whale’s tail (hence the name: Ballena means “whale” in Spanish).

In several of the park’s islands, the ocean has carved caves that, when the waves are strong, shoot streams of water skyward like blowholes.

There are over a dozen beaches in the area, but my favorite is Playa Arcos. Long, flat, isolated an fantastically tropical, Arcos is good for swimming and spending a day in the sun.

Unless you’re staying La Cusinga Lodge, you should try to reach Playa Arcos from Ballena National Marine Park. Punta Uvita, also located in the park, is great at low tide.

The area’s accommodations could be considered an attraction in and of themselves. As distinct and quirky as their respective owners, Costa Ballena’s hotels are a truly unique smorgasbord of lodging. There are no chains. Instead, it’s a series of hotels rich in personality and each boasting views better than any postcard you’ve ever seen. And each remains intimate, as no hotel has more than 20 rooms.

Perhaps most emblematic of the new wave in sophisticated offerings is Citrus, located in Ojochal. Owner and chef Marcela Marciano, a Belgian transplant in Costa Rica, offers an exquisite menu of Mediterranean New World cuisine that includes set dishes and daily specials. Urbane and nuanced, Citrus creates a refined tropical environment that reflects the area’s maturation as a destination. Don’t miss the crème brulee fusion, which magically blends a Catalan basil crème with orange flowers to create a truly unique dessert. Located in Ojochal.

Also in Ojochal is the old standby Exótica. The simple, intimate décor belies a sophisticated menu featuring cuisine du monde. Everything is beautifully garnished, and Exótica has garnered a great reputation among local residents, so it’s better to make a reservation.

Once you’ve found a good place to eat and sleep, you have to fill up your days. There is a wide range of tours that allow you to explore the different aspects of the area. Whale watching tours are popular (depending on the time of year, you can see humpback, pilot and killer whales) and many visitors try to take a trip to Corcovado National Park while in the area. More locally based activities include visiting the Nauyaca waterfalls (see sepa-

rate story), snorkeling and diving at Caño Island, sportfishing and more. Just north of Domincal is Hacienda Barú, which is a private nature reserve that offers a nice array of adventure activities (like canopy tour) and other tours geared towards nature lovers.

Also, Reptilandia boasts a nice collection of reptiles which are showcased in well appointed terrariums in a garden setting. Check out Southern Expeditions, based in Dominical (southernexpeditionscr.com) for general information, or Croco Dive (www.crocodive.com) is a good choice for water-based activities.

Dominical you’ll have to get to San Isidro before 13:30. From San José there are also buses that run first to Quepos and then to Dominical and Uvita. They leave from the La Coca Cola terminal at 5:30 and 17:30; or you can take the direct bus to Quepos, the last of which leaves at 19:00.

If you’re going by car, take the Pan-American Highway south to San Isidro del General and then the road to Dominical. You can also go from Quepos on the Costanera Sur, but this road is in poor condition and can only be driven with a allwheel-drive vehicle with high clearance.

irst, it was the normal sounds of the rainforest: croaking red poison dart frogs, buzzing insects, a few toucans chirping to each other.

Slowly, the din of churning water grew progressively louder. Then, braying horses. “You know what the worst thing for these horses is?” asked Braulio Jimenez Rojas, the sun glinting off his weathered face, eyes dancing with glee. “These horses come here every day, bringing tourists, and they’ve never seen the waterfall.” [Sabe cual es el colmo de los caballos? Todos los días traen turistas acá, y nunca han visto las cataratas.]

I had never seen the waterfall, either, but I certainly had heard about it. Don Lulo, as Jimenez is affectionately known, is a local fixture. He’s been running his waterfall tour for nearly 20 years, transforming his property from a deforested pasture into a lush secondary forest.

A couple minutes walking from where the horses were tied up, you finally see what all the fuss is over. There are two waterfalls. The top one is 45m, the bottom 20m. Looking out over the top cascade, Lulo said “it’s more impressive when there’s more water [in the rainy season]. It’s prettier.” I heard his words, but looking at the 45-meter silver ribbon tumbling onto a bunch of Volkswagen Beetle-sized boulders, framed by tropical rainforest, I found it hard to share his sentiment. It was quite beautiful indeed.

While the upper fall drops like a chute, the small lower falls jump from ledge to ledge, fanning out like a liquid fern. Tourists sit along the edge of the cliff, letting the tumbling cascade massage their shoulders, the warm sun tempered by the cool water. At the bottom is a deep pool, perfect for swimming or cliff jumping.

Guests are treated to two full, homestyle meals on the tour. Both breakfast and lunch offer important glimpses into the lives of rural Costa Ricans. You eat on don Lulo’s front porch, and the food is the epitome of traditional Tico cuisine. For example, a lunch might be rice, beans, handmade corn tortillas, chicken, salad, potatoes and pineapple juice. Fresh coffee is served after the meal.

Horses and parrots rest just outside the dining area. The food, all simple Costa Rican recipies comes right out of Lulo’s simple wood house. Lulo himself finds that simplicity is a good trait. “It’s the simplicity of the campesino,” he said.

As with nearly all of Costa Rica’s tourism industry, don Lulo’s land was not a tourist attraction. It was a working farm. “I planted corn, rice, beans, and even had some cattle.” Then the tourists started to arrive, and he saw the potential offered by bringing foreigners to experience his incredible landscapes and hospitality.

It’s all for sale. Don Lulo has his 92-hectare property on the market. It’s a great piece of land. If someone wanted to build a hotel here, this would be the perfect property. It’s got some 800 meters of river frontage…”

montañas forman este paisaje tan espectacular. ¡Y qué hermosas playas! Uno podría pasar cada día durante una vacación de una semana en una playa distinta y única, y aún así quedaría con ganas de regresar el año siguiente para ver más de esta belleza.

La playa más conocida de esta zona es Dominical, que posee gran fama de ser un excelente sitio para la práctica del surf, sin embargo el mar aquí no es muy recomendable para la natación.

Las corrientes pueden ser un buen reto para los surfeadores pero no para los nadadores inexpertos.

Hay más de una docena de playas en la zona, pero mi preferida es Arcos, una playa larga, plana y fantásticamente tropical.

Arcos es apta para nadar y pasar todo el día bajo el sol. A menos de que se hospede en La Cusinga Lodge, debería tratar de visitar Playa Arcos a través del Parque Nacional Marino Ballena. Punta Uvita, también ubicada dentro del parque, es excelente durante la marea baja.

INDIAN RESERVE Los hoteles de la zona pueden ser considerados como una atracción también. Tan variados y originales como sus respectivos dueños, los hoteles de Costa Ballena conforman un verdadero menú único y diverso de establecimientos de hospedaje. No existen cadenas hoteleras. En su lugar, hay una serie de hoteles muy distintivos y con impresionantes vistas que son incluso más hermosas que cualquiera que haya observado en una tarjeta postal. Cada hotel posee una atmósfera íntima ya que ninguno tiene más de veinte habitaciones.

P

rimero se escuchaban los sonidos normales del bosque lluvioso: el croar de las ranitas venenosas, el zumbido de los insectos, unos pocos tucanes gorjeando entre ellos.

Lentamente el sonido del agua agitada al caer aumentaba progresivamente. Luego los caballos relinchando, - ¿Sabe qué es lo peor para estos caballos?, vienen aquí todos los días, traen turistas y nunca han visto la catarata – menciona Braulio Jiménez Rojas, mientras el sol destella sobre su arrugado rostro y sus ojos muestran regocijo.

La famosa excursión de Lulo, es a la catarata de Nauyaca, que se localiza a minutos de la región costera de Costa Ballena y su estilo de vida playero. De repente uno se encuentra a un mundo de distancia de las olas, de la arena y del libertinaje de la playa. Es un terreno accidentado. Ondulados cerros bajan hacia valles fluviales espectaculares; densos bosques colindan con campos de cultivos.

Casas humildes de madera y de zinc corrugado salpican el paisaje.

Yo tampoco había visto la catarata, pero ciertamente había escuchado acerca de ella. Don Lulo, como conocen afectivamente a Jiménez, es un personaje local. Lulo ha operado esta excursión por casi 20 años, y ha transformado su propiedad de un pastizal deforestado a un exuberante bosque secundario.

A un par de minutos de distancia de donde dejamos a los caballos amarrados, se ve finalmente la razón de la fama del lugar.

Hay dos cataratas. La de arriba de 45 metros y la de abajo, de 20 metros. Mientras mira sobre la catarata de arriba Lulo dice – es más impresionante cuanto tiene más agua.

Durante la época lluviosa es más hermosa -. Yo escucho sus palabras pero también miro a ese lazo plateado de 45 metros de largo que cae sobre los inmensos peñascos, rodeados de un espléndido bosque tropical.

Me cuesta expresar este sentimiento.

Definitivamente fue algo hermoso.

La catarata de arriba cae como un tobogán, la otra más pequeña va cayendo por entre las rocas expandiéndose ampliamente como un helecho líquido. Los turistas se sientan a lo largo del borde del cerro y dejan que la catarata les haga un masaje en los hombros, mientras que sol es temperado por el agua fresca. En el fondo hay una piscina natural profunda, perfecta para nadar o para lanzarse desde el cerro.

A los turistas se les trata muy bien, se incluyen comidas caseras en esta excursión.

Tanto el desayuno como el almuerzo ofrecen una buena idea de cómo es la vida rural de los costarricenses. Las comidas se sirven en la entrada de la casa de don Lulo. Esta comida es la mejor muestra de la cocina tradicional tica. Por ejemplo, un almuerzo puede constar de arroz, frijoles, tortillas de maíz hechas a mano, pollo, ensalada, papas y jugo de piña. El café fresco se sirve luego de la comida. Los caballos y los pericos descansan justo afuera del comedor. La comida, simples recetas costarricenses, salen de la casa sencilla de Lulo. Lulo considera que esta sencillez es lo llamativo.

– Es la sencillez del campesino – dice.

Como casi toda la industria turística de Costa Rica, el terreno de don Lulo no era un atractivo turístico. Era una granja en operación. – Yo sembré maíz, arroz, frijoles, incluso tenía un poco de ganado- menciona Lulo. Luego los turistas comenzaron a llegar, y él vio el potencial que ofrecía el traer a los extranjeros para que vivieran la experiencia de sus increíbles paisajes y su hospitalidad.

Don Lulo tiene su propiedad de 92 hectáreas a la venta. Es un gran terreno.

Si alguien quisiera construir un hotel aquí, esta sería la ubicación perfecta. Tiene 800 metros de frente a un río…

VIENE DE LA PAGINA 41 verdad científica es que se da una reacción química entre las aguas y el carbonato de calcio y azufre provenientes del volcán Tenorio, que resultan en esa coloración celeste de las aguas del río.

Información General Parque Nacional Tenorio Ubicado entre los cantones de Guatuso y Upala en Alajuela y Cañas, Bagaces y Tilarán en Guanacaste este parque tiene una extensión de 12.871 hectáreas con altitudes que van desde los 700 hasta los 1.916 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

Entre los atractivos del parque están sus conos volcánicos y sus conos piroclásticos y las cataratas y la laguna del río Celeste.

Por la influencia climática posee variedad de zonas de vida tales como: bosque pluvial montano bajo, bosque tropical muy húmedo y bosque premontano, y las precipitaciones se hacen presentes la mayor parte del año, exceptuando los meses de marzo y abril. La temperatura promedio del parque es de 23 grados Centígrados, pero ésta varía según la altura.

El parque ofrece un puesto de información general, agua potable, servicios sanitarios, guías de la zona, charlas y senderos.

La tarifa de ingreso para extranjeros no residentes es $10 y para nacionales y residentes es de ¢1000. El horario del parque es de 8:00 am a 4:00 pm. y su teléfono es 2200-0135.

Cómo llegar: DESDE SAN JOSÉ: Tome la carretera Interamericana en dirección hacia Liberia, cinco kilómetros después de la ciudad de Cañas, y doble a mano derecha unos 30 km hasta llegar a Bijagua.

Continúe unos cinco kilómetros hacia el este, donde están los rótulos indicando el parque. Aquí doble a mano derecha y recorra aproximadamente siete kilómetros en calle de lastre hasta la entrada al parque. Contempla un recorrido de 3:30 horas de duración desde el Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaría en Alajuela .

DESDE LIBERIA: A solamente una hora de la Ciudad de Liberia y del Aeropuerto Internacional Daniel Oduber.

DESDE ARENAL: 1:30 horas del Volcán Arenal.

Los ultimos 7 Km son un camino de lastre transitable de preferencia por vehículos altos o de doble tracción.

Qué llevar: Ropa cómoda de preferencia impermeable, zapatos tenis o especiales para caminar, repelente de insectos, vestido de baño, agua o bebida hidratante.

Recomendaciones: No se desvíe de los senderos establecidos.

No extraiga ninguna especie del parque.

No se bañe en las zonas restringidas.

No se coloque cerca o debajo de la catarata.

P

erhaps the most overlooked spot among San José’s excellent walking circuit is the General Cemetery. Open daily from 7am to 5pm, this national landmark is perfect for strolling amid the mausoleums and admiring the impressive sculptures, stonework and gardens. Like in a city park, the urban bustle melts away with the contemplative nature of the cemetery.

The oldest tombs you’ll find date from 1822, and the area itself was officially designated the general cemetery in 1845. Among the residents, you can find 22 ex-Presidents of Costa Rica, as well as many famous last names that still connote wealth and power.

The Cementerio General is located in San Jose, near the Municipalidad (City Hall), on avenida 12, between calles 34 and 38.

al vez uno de los sitios que más se pasa por alto dentro del excelente circuito para caminar en San José es el Cementerio General. Este cementerio abre diariamente de 7AM a 5PM. Este punto de referencia de fama nacional es excelente para un paseo por los mausoleos y para admirar las impresionantes esculturas, los trabajos en piedra y sus jardines. Igual que un parque citadino, el bullicio urbano se desvanece con la naturaleza contemplativa de este cementerio.

Las tumbas más viejas que se pueden encontrar aquí datan del año 1822, y este sitio fue oficialmente nombrado como el Cementerio General en 1845. Entre sus residentes encontramos 22 ex-presidentes de Costa Rica, así como muchas personas con los más reconocidos apellidos que aún hoy en día representan poder y riqueza en este país.

Here, a tailor prepares garments by hand, as he has for decades. “Shops like these are a dying breed,” says social geographer Joseph Sequoia. “As the world culture becomes more globalized and international products are readily and inexpensively had, specialized local shops can’t compete.” Costa Rica, while becoming an increasingly active member on the world stage, still retains many of its traditional craftsmen.

“The question is,” says Sequoia, “how long will they be around, and who will take their place?”

reat bocas, music at a reasonable volume and cheap suds separate cantinas from regular bars. Well lit, generally with a long bar and a regular bartender, these establishments are more than simple after-work social spots. At Chelles, in San Jose (Avenida Central, Calle 9), you can meet people from all over the city – and the world. Popular with locals and travelers alike, Chelles is open 24-hours, 363 days a year (closed only Christmas and New Year’s Day), inside the cozy confines is a sample of the “real Costa Rica:” its food, drink, people, and spirit.

A short walk away, Rancho Alegre (avenidas 1/3, calle 11) is where all of the capital seems to mix together. Office workers, revolutionary types, government officials and students all rub elbows in this historic building. “You can find rich people, poor people, intellectuals and those simply interested in a cheap drink and good food,” an anonymous patron said. Regulars get to know the staff, and when one sits down, his drink is already waiting.

In spite of the popularity of discotheques, karaoke bars and noisy singles joints, you can still find cantinas throughout Costa Rica.

con una extensa barra y un cantinero familiar, estos establecimientos son más que un simple lugar de reunión para después del trabajo. En Chelles, en San José (avenida central, calle 9), uno puede conocer personas de todas partes de la ciudad, en incluso del mundo.

Popular entre los residentes y los extranjeros, Chelles abre las 24 horas, 363 días al año (solamente cierra el día de navidad y el 1ro de enero), adentro su agradable ambiente es un ejemplo de “la verdadera Costa Rica”: su comida, sus bebidas, la gente y su esencia.

No muy lejos de allí, a una corta distancia a pie, se encuentra Rancho Alegre (entre avenidas 1 y 3, calle 11), donde parece mezclarse toda la variedad de la capital. Oficinistas, activistas, empleados del gobierno y estudiantes, todos se codean en este edificio histórico.

Un cliente anónimo menciona – uno puede encontrar gente adinerada, gente pobre, intelectuales y gente que solamente viene buscando una bebida a un bajo precio y buena comida-. Los clientes regulares llegan a conocer bien al personal, y cuando uno se sienta, ya la bebida está servida y esperándole.

A pesar de la popularidad de las discotecas, los bares de karaoke y los bulliciosos sitios frecuentados por los solteros, todavía se pueden encontrar cantinas por toda Costa Rica.

Prices for small homes in any of the surrounding small towns start well under $100,000 for a simple two- or three-bedroom Costa Rica-style house. Lake-view properties can be had for just over $100K. As you drive west towards Guanacaste’s famous sundrenched beaches, billboards tempt with glimpses of a paradise that could be yours for a sum somewhere in the six-figure range. Dump trucks rumble past, taking raw materials to those tempting visions of a permanent vacation paradise. All around is pastureland in transition. Guanacaste’s plains once raised cattle.

I don’t have anything against the constructions in and of themselves. For the most part, they are well designed, attractive

structures. It’s the location that beguiles me.

You’ll see a few kilometers of pasture, then a strip mall, then more pasture. The pattern repeats.

Developers have forsaken the Costa Rican and European model of a compact, functional urban center, instead embracing the American model of a sprawling automobile-based culture. The fact that one must travel by car to get to these establishments necessarily and intentionally excludes much of the local population from experiencing them.

Those without a vehicle are physically and economically separated. Developers are isolating themselves from the area’s traditional economic and commercial center, choosing cheaper land prices over an integrated urban vision.

Standing in front of the Liberia international airport might be the contrived epicenter for this disjointed development. Solarium, a mixed-use project which will encompass 104 hectares in front of the airport, aims to become a whole new city.

Boosters say Solarium will have a duty-free zone, gas station, offices, services, 800 condos, even a hospital. It will create 15,000 direct jobs, they say. Right now, however, it’s difficult to visualize a new city here.

True, directly in front of the airport a new Hilton Garden Court is under construction, and the Solarium Ofibodegas (Offices/ Storage units) are already up and running. But the centerpiece, a planned community of professionals for the “new Guanacaste,” is only a billboard and a road leading into the dusty fields, 13 kilometers away from the only city of any size.

I can’t help but think that if tourism suddenly dried up, which rapidly increasing fuel prices could potentially cause, this side of the highway would become one of the world’s most opulent (and sprawling) ghost towns. Meanwhile, to the east, the heart of Liberia would continue to beat.

oseph Quillan, a California-based artist, crafts whimsical sculptures that take on a myriad of natural forms. Quillan’s sculptures may look like delicate porcelain, but they are actually sturdy, heavy bronze pieces.

The artist’s use of color and texture stands out. Pieces are vibrant and nuanced, and many have been crafted to appear like different types of fine stones. The end result is fluid representations of frogs, dolphins, sailfish and more which exhibit an incredibly amount of movement.

Se destaca el uso que emplea el artista de color y textura. Las piezas son vibrantes y matizadas, y muchas han sido elaboradas para que parezcan piedras finas. El resultado final es una representación fluída de ranas, delfines, peces vela y mucho más, todos con muchísimo movimiento.

hen buying a house or property in Costa Rica, one should make sure that the property is free from liens and encumbrances and that the seller is the owner listed in the National Registry (Registro Nacional). If the seller is not the owner, then the seller should provide special legal powers that allow him to do so. Once this is verified, the notary that you have selected will write the purchase agreement and will indicate to you the costs of inscribing this document in the National Registry, as well as the corresponding fees. Fees should be calculated according to the Table of Registry Rights, Stamps and Taxes, and the Fee for Lawyers and Notaries.

Here we illustrate with an example of the expenses you’ll incur in addition to the purchase price.

Stamps, taxes and professional fees are based on the highest value given between the parties involved and that the Treasury Ministry’s Direct Tax Payment Department includes. The Treasury Ministry’s estimate of the property’s value should be included in the notary’s study of the property that is presented to the Registry.

Let’s take, for example, a property whose value is ¢50,000,000.

l comprar una propiedad o bien inmueble en Costa Rica, como primera prevención debe asegurarse que el bien esté libre de gravámenes hipotecarios y anotaciones y que el vendedor sea la persona que consta como dueña del bien ante el Registro, o en su defecto que ostente poder especial para ese acto. Una vez verificado esto, el notario de su elección elaborará la escritura de compraventa y le indicará los costos de inscripción ante el Registro Público de ese documento y los honorarios profesionales que le corresponden, todo de conformidad con la Tabla de Derechos de Registro, Timbres e Impuestos y el Arancel de Honorarios por Servicios Profesionales de Abogacía y Notariado.

Hoy hemos querido ilustrar con un ejemplo, una propiedad cuyo valor es de ¢50.000.000 los gastos – además del pago del precio de la compraventa – en los que usted debe incurrir.

Los timbres, impuestos y honorarios profesionales se pagarán tomando como base el mayor valor dado entre el que las partes acuerden y el que consta en la Oficina de Tributación Directa del Ministerio de Hacienda, valor este último incluido en el estudio de la propiedad que su notario hace ante el Registro.

T

he windows of Berlin’s myriad bars, restaurants and cafes dance with candlelight. The soft glow is a warm touch in a city that is much more colorful than I expected. Nearly 20 years have passed since the wall came down and the world watched Germany and its capital reunify.

And although 20 years is a very short period in the life of a city, these two decades have seen a constant state of reinvention. This is not the first time Berlin has redefined itself. Change has always been part of its persona.

The first written records that mention Berlin date from around 750 years ago. It’s an old city. A longtime small town, in the mid1600s there was a population boom. A century later, the German capital had become a center for culture and art. Industry blossomed at the end of the 19th century, and Berlin became one of the first cities in the world to have electrical lighting and phone lines. From

1850 to 1900, the population jumped from 300,000 to nearly two million. Berlin was one of Europe’s great cultural and scientific centers. The stage was set to become a toptier world capital.

Two world wars put the world stage on the backburner. Decimation and division followed.

“The streets are so wide because when we were students, we had to march every three months,”

and West Berlin in 1945, at which point travel between democratic West Berlin and communist East Berlin was greatly restricted to highly secured checkpoints.

The wall went up in 1961, cutting neighborhoods and families in two. Pressure from both side of the wall mounted as citizens protested angrily over the imposed division.

Berliners demanded change, and they finally got it. On November 9th, 1989, East Berliners finally gained access to the forbidden western sector of the city again.

We all remember television images of joyous Germans tearing down the physical divider between them. In that, we remember the beginning of modern Berlin.

The vestiges of a generation of physical and ideological division are still visible. Winding streets and alleyways lined with small shops and sit in the shadows of giant Soviet-style apartment blocks. In Eastern neighborhoods, you’ll find wide avenues lined with those auspicious architectural exercises in equality.

The stoic pragmatism of Marx’s shattered vision is quickly being replaced by a vibrant artistic revolution of unprecedented depth.

Stroll down the streets of Kreuzberg or Prenzlaur Berg and you’ll likely find storefronts exhibiting colorful locally designed clothing and accessories, interspersed with used

bookstores, Turkish bazaars, coffee shops and enough culinary options to make you feel like you’re in an open-air international food festival.

Charlottenburg, West Berlin’s traditional center, still pulses with highend fashion, exclusive restaurants and tree-lined avenues. And everywhere you see an energetic, educated international community flowing along the sidewalks like blood in the city’s veins, a vivacious mixture of bohemians, suits, students and tourists that punctuate the lively storefronts.

Berlin is the third most visited city in Europe. “Tourists flock to Berlin to see part of a living history, a cruel history, that Berlin inevitably tells. It’s the epicenter of a part of world history,” said Arantxa Villanueva, a Spanish human rights lawyer who lived in the city. “The local people understand this, as do the tourists who look for a Berlin which offers a first-hand account of this history. You become a spectator of history.”

Today, over a quarter of Berlin’s nearly 3.5 million inhabitants have direct foreign migration in their background; that number jumps to 40% for residents under 18. A Babylonian range of languages and accents flavor daily life. Galleries featuring artists from around the globe are way more common than gas stations, and the city has seen an architectural boom that has attracted top architects and designers who have enhanced the city’s face.

Still, reminders of yesteryear abound. Vacant lots and bombed-out buildings still dot the cityscape

over 60 years since the end of the war. In Charlottenburg the shell of Gedächtnis Kirche, the city’s most famous church, stands hollowed by bombs dropped in 1943. Its place on a major commercial strip is a harrowing reminder to how the city suffered, and how much it has maintained its essence at the same time.

Many young people speak excellent English, and Spanish is fairly common, too.

Currency: The Euro (€1=US$1.56 or ¢819, as of press time) Transportation: Berlin has an excellent public transportation network consisting of buses, subways and trains. Travel is inexpensive, efficient, clean and comprehensive.

Costs: Travelers will find that Berlin costs only slightly more than San José. It remains one of Western Europe’s cheapest cities.

Getting there: Many international carriers fly to Berlin, either via Europe or the United States.

Check visa requirements before purchasing a ticket.

Less noticeable social reminders persist, too. Xenophobic reactions to immigrant groups still pepper daily conversation. Residents still tell of a palpable separation between East and West Berlin. “The West Berliners generally have a discriminatory attitude towards those from the East,” Villanueva said. East Berliners must contend with a subtle but palpable superiority complex from their western neighbors. East Berlin is definitely the poorer part of town, and discontent is high among the working class. Strikes are common. Property values are lower, which attracts more immigrants, and has recently drawn a large student population. The result is a slow but steady process of alternative-culture resurgence that blossoms from the confluence of the city’s marginalized groups.

A hunger for culture and experimentation is found in Berlin’s many world-class museums, with permanent exhibitions including covering everything from Andy Warhol to the Holocaust. Art buffs could easily spend a week touring the halls of dozens of museums. A food connoisseur could eat her way through six continents without ever having to get in a car.

Design fanatics will find bold statements around just about every corner.

Berlin’s light is just beginning to shine as it looked it once would. It’s just shining differently today. Things seem brighter. Berlin has become a world destination at last.

as ventanas de los innumerables bares, restaurantes y cafeterías de Berlín bailan al ritmo de la luz de las velas. El leve resplandor da un toque de calidez a una ciudad más colorida de lo que yo esperaba. Cerca de 20 años han pasado desde que el muro de Berlín cayó y el mundo pudo ver a Alemania y a su capital reunidas de nuevo. A pesar de que 20 años es un periodo muy corto en la vida de una ciudad, estas dos décadas han presenciado un constante estado de reinvención. Esta no es la primera vez que Berlín se ha redefinido. El cambio ha sido una constante en este lugar.

Siendo un pueblo pequeño durante mucho tiempo, no fue sino hasta la mitad del siglo XVII que se dio un aumento en la población. Un siglo después la capital alemana se había convertido en un centro de la cultura y del arte. La industria floreció a finales del siglo XIX y Berlín se transformó en una de las primeras ciudades del mundo en tener energía eléctrica y líneas telefónicas. Entre 1850 y 1900 la población saltó de 300 000 habitantes a cerca de dos millones.

Berlín fue uno de los centros culturales y científicos más importantes de Europa. Ya las condiciones estaban dadas para que se convirtiera en una capital de clase mundial.

Dos guerras mundiales afectaron esas condiciones negativamente. La aniquilación y la división se hicieron presentes.

La ciudad fue separada en Berlín Este y Oeste en 1945, momento en el cual los viajes entre el Berlín democrático del oeste y el Berlín comunista eran muy restringidos mediante la utilización de puntos de control muy estrictos. El muro de Berlín se construyó en 1961, dividiendo a los barrios y a las familias en dos. Hubo presión por parte de los ciudadanos de ambos lados del muro quienes protestaron muy molestos por esta división impuesta a la fuerza. Los habitantes de Berlín exigieron cambios, y al fin los obtuvieron. El 9 de noviembre de 1989 los habitantes de Berlín del Este finalmente ganaron acceso de nuevo al prohibido sector oeste de la ciudad.

Todos recordamos esas imágenes de la televisión, en las que los alemanes felices demolían esa barrera física que existía entre ellos.

Este evento marca lo que recordamos sería el inicio de un Berlín moderno.

Los vestigios de una generación llena de divisiones físicas e ideológicas son todavía visibles. Se observan sinuosas calles y callejones rodeados de pequeñas tiendas y bordeados por las sombras de bloques de gigantes edificios de apartamentos de estilo soviético.

En los barrios del este se pueden observar amplias avenidas con diseños arquitectónicos bien balanceados. “Las calles son tan anchas porque cuando éramos estudiantes, teníamos que marchar cada 3 meses”, comenta un habitante del antiguo Berlín del Este.

reemplazado rápidamente por una vibrante revolución artística de una profundidad excepcional. Al pasear por las calles de Kreuzberg o Prenzlaur Berg es muy posible encontrar tiendas con ventanales que exhiben ropa y accesorios coloridos de diseño local, alternados con tiendas de libros usados. Los bazares turcos, cafeterías y suficientes opciones culinarias hacen sentir que uno se encuentra en un festival internacional de comida al aire libre. Charlottenburg, el centro tradicional de Berlín del Oeste todavía muestra exclusivas tiendas y restaurantes y avenidas bordeadas por árboles. Por donde quiera que se mire, se podrá observar una comunidad energética y de educación internacional que se desplaza por las aceras como si fuesen la sangre en las venas de la ciudad, una mezcla vivaz de bohemios, ejecutivos, estudiantes y turistas que se aglomeran en las entradas de las concurridas tiendas.

Berlín es la tercera ciudad más visitada de Europa. “Los turistas vienen a Berlín para ver parte de una historia viviente, una historia cruel que Berlín cuenta de una manera inevitable. Es el epicentro de una parte de la historia mundial” comenta Arantxa Villanueva, una abogada española especialista en derechos humanos quien vivió en esta ciudad. Y agrega que, “los habitantes locales comprenden esta situación, al igual que los turistas quienes buscan un Berlín que ofrece un relato de primera mano de esta historia. Uno se convierte en un espectador de esta historia”.

Hoy en día, más del 25% de la población de Berlín (que ronda los 3 500 000 habitantes) provienen de emigrantes; ese número aumenta a 40% si hablamos de los residentes menores de 18 años.

Un sinnúmero de idiomas y acentos están a la orden del día. Hay galerías que presentan trabajos de artistas de todo el mundo (más comunes que las estaciones de gasolina), y la ciudad ha visto un crecimiento arquitectónico que ha atraído a los mejores arquitectos y diseñadores y que ha mejorado el aspecto de la misma.

Aun así, los recuerdos del pasado todavía abundan. Lotes vacíos y edificios bombardeados llenan aún el paisaje luego de más de 60 años de haber finalizado la guerra. En Charlottenburg, las ruinas de Gedächtnis Kirche que es la iglesia más famosa de la ciudad se yergue con evidencias de los daños causados por las bombas que se lanzaron en 1943. Todavía persisten unos menos notorios recordatorios sociales. Las reacciones xenofóbicas en contra de los grupos inmigrantes se perciben aún en las conversaciones diarias. Los residentes todavía pueden sentir una separación palpable entre el Berlín del Este y el Berlín del Oeste. “Los habitantes de Berlín del Oeste generalmente mantienen una actitud discriminatoria contra los del Este”, menciona Villanueva. Los habitantes de Berlín del Este deben enfrentarse con un ligero pero palpable complejo de superioridad de sus vecinos del Oeste. Berlín del Este es definitivamente la parte más pobre de la ciudad, y el descontento es notable entre la clase trabajadora. Las huelgas son comunes. El valor de las propiedades es menor, lo que atrae a más inmigrantes; y ha atraído a una gran población de estudiantes. El resultado es un proceso lento pero estable de un surgimiento de una cultura alternativa que florece de la confluencia de los grupos marginados de la ciudad.

Un hambre por la cultura y la experimentación se encuentra en muchos de los museos de clase mundial de Berlín, los cuales ofrecen exhibiciones permanentes que cubren todo, desde Andy Warhol hasta el holocausto. Los aficionados al arte podrían pasar toda una semana paseándose por los salones de las docenas de museos que aquí existen. Un conocedor de la buena cocina podría pasar por la comida de seis continentes sin siquiera tener la necesidad de andar en un auto. Los fanáticos del diseño podrán encontrar muchos diseños atrevidos casi en todas las esquinas.

La luz de Berlín apenas comienza a brillar como parecía que un día lo haría. Solamente que en la actualidad brilla de manera diferente. Las cosas parecen tener más brillo. Berlín se ha convertido por fin en un destino mundial.
