RAFTING Pacuare River C

osta Rica has many rivers and dozens of companies that offer whitewater rafting trips on these rivers.

Costa Sol Rafting offers tours on Reventazón River and Pacuare River, and while both are excellent, the latter counts as one of the best rivers for rafting in the country. Customers can choose between one-day or two-day tours, which include an overnight stay on the river, either on a campsite or in an allinclusive lodge.

I got the chance to try out the oneday tour, which starts with a hearty breakfast of gallo pinto and eggs and then brought us to the put-in at Tres Equis, just outside of Turrialba. There we met our river guide and got all necessary equipment for the tour.

After the usual safety instructions and a small trial run on land, we jumped in the raft and went off to face the approximately 18 kilometers of river on this run, which includes some 50 rapids. That is enough for a wonderfully full day.

Pacuare River offers class-III – IV rapids, which can be handled by beginners

but also offer enough excitement for people who have rafted before. The tour starts off with some easy class-III rapids, which are perfect to get used to the paddling and the commands of the guide. We later progressed to several classIV rapids that are a lot of fun. The experienced guides make the rafting safe but at the same time extremely enjoyable by pointing out different species of tropical birds and entertaining participants with stories about the area and their job as rafting guides. The tour ends after around three hours of rafting, a good length as it is not too short but also gets everyone tired and hungry for lunch, which is served at a Tico-style restaurant nearby.

Pacuare River is located in the area of Turrialba and runs right through the rainforest, which makes the scenery extremely beautiful. We rafted through tree-laden canyons, saw dazzling waterfalls that dropped right in the river and were surrounded by deep green forests throughout the trip. The combination of the long, enjoyable rapids

and the stunning scenery make this river definitely one of the best ones for white water rafting in Costa Rica.

osta Rica tiene muchos ríos y abundantes empresas que ofrecen excursiones de rafting en estos ríos. Costa Sol Rafting ofrece tours en los ríos Reventazón y Pacuare, y este último se posiciona como uno de los mejores ríos del mundo para practicar el rafting. Los viajeros pueden escoger entre excursiones de uno o dos días, que incluyen una noche al lado del río, sea en una tienda de camping o en un albergue todo incluido.

Yo tuve la suerte de probar la excursión de un día, que comienza con un generoso desayuno de gallo pinto y huevos, para después ir a Tres Equis, Turrialba, donde conocimos a nuestro guía y recibimos los equipos para poder conquistar al río.

Después de las instrucciones para nuestra seguridad, nos montamos en la balsa y zarpamos para enfrentar casi 30 kilómetros y 50 rápidos en este hermoso río.

El río Pacuare ofrece rápidos de clase III y IV, los cuales pueden ser manejados por

principiantes e inclusive siempre provocar emoción hasta en los más experimentados. El tour empieza con unos rápidos clase III, que son excelentes para poner en práctica las instrucciones del guía y las maniobras por realizar, y después aumenta a varios rápidos de clase IV que si son realmente emocionantes. Los guías, todos bien experimentados, no sólo ayudaron a que tuviéramos un tour seguro, sino también agregaron excelentes comentarios sobre la vida silvestre de la zona y sus anécdotas sobre la vida en un río. El tour termina después de unas tres horas de rafting, tiempo preciso tanto para poder disfrutar del río como para que todos no salgan totalmente agotados. Pero eso si, el hambre no faltó y nos sirvieron el almuerzo en un restaurante típico cercano.

El río Pacuare corre por la zona de Turrialba, en medio del bosque lluvioso, y los paisajes son increíbles. Pasamos por cañones llenos de árboles, vimos cataratas deslumbrantes que caen directamente al río, y un bosque verde

profundo nos envolvió durante el recorrido. La combinación de emocionantes y largos rápidos con los paisajes de ensueño hacen que este sea uno de los mejores ríos para practica el rafting en toda Costa Rica.

Interesting familyrun establishments have popped up in recent years to serve the burgeoning tourism industry, and a community-improvement organization has turned the town’s central park into a veritable oasis.

Arenal Volcano, however, is what put the region on the map. Long known as Arenal Hill, an eruption in 1968 changed the region forever. Intense eruptions and volcanic activities continued for several days, killing 87 people and burying over 15 square kilometers in rock, lava and ashes.

All in all, the eruptions affected a total of over 232 square kilometers in the surrounding area. Since then, Arenal Volcano has been almost constantly active, with activity ranging from silent emissions to rumbling explosions that send hot rocks into the air and lava pouring down the side of the volcano. The last major eruption, which led

to temporary evacuations from hotels and nearby attractions, occurred in May 1998 but in the end didn’t present any real danger.

Arenal’s activity and quintessential conical shape offers most spectacular views and a daily pyrotechnics show that attracts visitors from around the globe. The volcano rises to approximately 1633 meters at its summits but due to its activity, its height changes frequently. If you are lucky and the weather permits it, you might get the chance to see the glowing lava at night.

While the volcano is without a doubt the area’s main attraction, there is no guarantee the weather will be clear enough to see it during your stay. However, with a wide range of excellent adventure activities, as well as the traditional hot springs, waterfalls and more, La Fortuna is a worthwhile destination and a must for any travel itinerary to Costa Rica. Nearby Caño Negro Wildlife Reserve is a great stop for nature lovers (especially birdwatchers) and Lake Arenal is another important nearby destination. There are boat cruises, wind surfing, fishing and more available on Costa Rica’s largest body of water.

Lake Arenal Lake Arenal, Costa Rica´s largest body of water, covers an area of 85.5 square kilometers (33 square miles). The lake is the key driver in a nationwide hydroelectric project that currently produces much of Costa Rica’s electricity. Additionally, the lake offers myriad activities throughout the year. Visitors can go windsurfing, fishing, kayaking or enjoy boat tours. Taxi boats connect the Arenal area with Monteverde via a quick, scenic shortcut across the lake.

Arenal Botanical Garden The Arenal Botanical Garden, located 4 km southeast of the village of Nuevo Arenal, was founded in 1991 as a reserve and living library of tropical and subtropical plants.

The garden features over 2000 tropical local and international plant species. Visitors can also see birds and butterflies (there is also a butterfly farm). Attendance is limited to 20 people per hour, which makes visiting the gardens a personal, intimate experience.

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is a large wetlands region, considered one of

the richest in biological diversity in Costa Rica. Exploration primarily take place on boats and only during the dry season, there are some hiking and horse trails along the river. Visitors will encounter a huge variety of tropical birds, a variety of monkey species, iguanas, caymans & turtles. The La Fortuna Waterfall offers stunning scenery and is definitely worth a visit if you’re in reasonable shape. Located about 5.5 km outside the town of La Fortuna, the 70-meter waterfall tumbles into a swimming hole that is surrounded by lush tropical forest. The entry fee is $8, which is reinvested in local improvement projects.

Be aware that access to the waterfall and swimming hole is along a steep trail. Also, while swimming is excellent, take care not to swim directly under the falls.

Tabacón River, which begins deep in Arenal Volcano. The water is heated to around 100 degrees and flows from the volcano to the natural pools and hot springs. Pools of various sizes and temperatures give visitors the chance to unwind in a lush, tropical environment and at the same time improve their health in the thermal waters. The hot springs also feature a heated waterfall and the world’s only 98F wet bar. The hot springs are part of the luxurious Tabacón Resort. Visitors can either spend the night at the resort or purchase day or evening passes ($85 and $ 70). There are also possibilities to combine the visit to the spa with lunch and dinner.

In front of Tabacon there is another, less exclusive (and markedly less luxurious) hot springs just down river from the main Tabacon resort.

Other local hot springs include Baldí Hot Spring (www.baldicostarica. com). You’ll find a spa, hotel and overpriced restaurant here. Baldi has some wonderful hot pools spread out amid well tended tropical gardens, but blaring music takes away from some of the magic. Entrance fees are $25 and good for the entire day, even if you leave and want to come back.

For budget travelers, there are thermal rivers that run through the area. Ask

around to see which ones are hot. It’s not as fancy as the others, but the price is nice: free.

Activities Aside from visiting the volcano, visitors will find a lot of adrenaline-laden activities and adventure tours in the area. The most popular activities include rafting, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, waterfall rappelling, canopy tours and hanging bridges.

real estate boom has transformed Jacó from a surfer village into the country’s premier beach city. Although the city is still developing, you can find a sophisticated mix of restaurants, bakeries, and shops around the area. The beach is long and wide, great for surfers and swimmers alike. Currently about two hours from San José, travel time will be cut in half when the new highway opens next year.

CLIMA: Caliente y tropical. Llueve un poco casi todos los días entre mayo y noviembre. El resto del año es mucho más seco, sin embargo, podría llover esporadicamente.

he Osa Peninsula has been dubbed Costa Rica’s last wilderness frontier. It may very well be just that. Rich in wildlife, sparsely populated and, until recently, having very difficult access, much of this highly forested area is conserved in national parks and private reserves. Towering rainforests line undeveloped beaches and untouched coves, making this region one of the most beautiful anywhere on earth.

In response to a growing eco-tourism market, many environmentally conscious lodges have opened up along the coast north of Corcovado National Park.

Drake Bay has become a premier destination, catering for vacationers who want to experience nature and comfort simultaneously. Nearby Caño Island is excellent for snorkeling and diving, while the deeper waters are great for sportfishing.

Across the Golfo Dulce, Golfito is a burgeoning tourism destination. The former banana company town has several hotels, a new marina going in, and a stunning setting.

3. PUERTO JIMÉNEZ. Aunque el turismo ya ha llegado acá, la única 'ciudad' de la península conserva un ambiente de pueblo fronterizo en donde caminará junto a pescadores y oreros.

orthwestern Costa Rica boasts some of the country’s most popular beaches. Guanacaste province, together with the Nicoya Peninsula, have become so popular that the government opened Liberia’s airport to international travel. Today, over a quarter million visitors come through that airport annually.

While many come for the beaches and the tourist-friendly areas like Papagayo, Tamarindo and Montezuma, the area’s culture is another draw. Sabaneros, Costa Rican cowboys, ride horseback along the region’s plains.

Marimba music and traditional dances originated here, along with specialized pottery and many of the country’s delicious dishes. You’ll see the lowland, agricultural economy in the small towns throughout the province.

Of course, nature plays a central role in this region. Several volcanoes burst out of the eastern part of the area, including active Rincón de la Vieja. Liberia offers all the creature comforts of a mid-size city. And many protected areas offer a variety of activities, such as Barra Honda (with an extensive system of caves), Santa Rosa (full of history and wildlife) and Palo Verde (a major sanctuary for resident and migrating waterfowl). Rio Celeste is a true wonder of Costa Rica. It’s natural sky-blue waters and majestic waterfalls will leave you shaking your head at nature’s palate.

Don’t Miss: 1. THE BEACHES. Hundreds of little coves dot the coastline, making for some of the best beach exploring in the world. Larger beaches like Tamarindo, Conchal and Santa Teresa attract modest crowds, and plenty of smaller beaches afford intrepid travelers the chance to have their own tropical paradise all to themselves.

a parte noroeste de Costa Rica posee algunas de las playas más visitadas del país. La provincia de Guanacaste y la península de Nicoya se han convertido en zonas tan populares que el gobierno abrió el aeropuerto internacional de Liberia para dar mejor acceso a los visitantes internacionales. Hoy en día, más de un cuarto de millón de visitantes entran al país por ese aeropuerto.

Mientras que muchos vienen atraídos por las playas y las zonas turísticas como Papagayo, Tamarindo y Montezuma, el aspecto cultural es otro de los atractivos. Los sabaneros (los vaqueros costarricenses) cabalgan por las planicies del área. La música de la marimba y los bailes típicos tuvieron su origen aquí, junto con la artesanía especializada y muchos de los platillos más deliciosos del país.

osta Rica’s Caribbean province of Limón offers a cultural flavor rarely seen in the rest of the country. Before the government built a highway in the late 1970s, Limón was physically isolated from the rest of Costa Rica. This isolation sheltered the local cultures from outside influence, preserving the English-speaking afro-Caribbean people’s language and traditions.

Puerto Viejo is the area’s most popular destination. This funky little town combines a laid-back smalltown Caribbean atmosphere with a sophisticated international offering. The nearby village of Cahuita offers great beaches and instant access to Cahuita National Park.

Further north, Tortuguero dazzles visitors with the annual arribada, or mass nesting of turtles. The national park offers excellent wildlife viewing, with some 57 species of amphibians, 111 different reptiles, 60 types mammals and over 300 different classes of birds all within a canopy that stretches over 200 feet into the air.

Don’t Miss: 1. THE FOOD. Rice and beans (tasty dish with coconut milk), rondón (a seafood stew) and pati (a spicy, flaky meat pie) are just a small sample of the province’s Caribbean flavor. Be sure to check out Maxi's in Manzanillo for some truly authentic local cuisine.

a provincia caribeña de Costa Rica, Limón, ofrece un sabor cultural particular que no se ve en el resto del país. Antes de que el gobierno construyera la autopista a finales de los años 70, Limón se encontraba aislado físicamente del resto del país. Este aislamiento mantuvo a las culturas locales lejos de la influencia externa, y ayudó a preservar las tradiciones y el idioma inglés afro-caribeño de sus habitantes.

Puerto Viejo es el área más popular de este destino. Este pueblo combina la atmósfera relajada de un pequeño pueblo caribeño con una oferta internacional sofisticada. La cercana comunidad de Cahuita ofrece hermosas playas y acceso directo al parque nacional Cahuita.

Hacia el norte se encuentra Tortuguero que deslumbra a los visitantes con las “arribadas” anuales de tortugas, que llegan a la zona para depositar sus huevos.

El parque nacional ofrece una amplia variedad de vida salvaje, entre las cuales se puede nombrar 57 especies de anfibios, 111 especies de reptiles, 60 especies de mamíferos, y más de 300 especies de aves, todo dentro de un dosel que se extiende a más de 60 metros hacia el cielo.

No se pierda: 1. LA COMIDA. El Rice and Beans (un delicioso guiso de mariscos), y el pati (un tipo de empanada picante de carne). Vaya a Manzanillo para probar los platillos caribeños típicos en Maxi's.

2. PUERTO VIEJO. Este pueblo sui géneris es un destino por si solo. Cuenta con excelentes restaurantes, hermosas playas y una comunidad internacional.

3. TORTUGUERO. Aquí no encontrará carros; todo el transporte es en lancha. Si tiene suerte, verá la arribada de las tortugas marinas. Pero Tortuguero es un buen destino todo el año, con interesantes hoteles, el parque nacional Tortuguero y más.
