Peachtree City Convention & Visitors Bureau Moves to The Avenue!

esidents and Visitors of Peachtree City should stop by the NEW Visitors Center located in the Avenue shopping area. This new location is very accessible, and is designed to tell the story of one of the most unique city’s in America. Peachtree City is known for its natural setting, close proximity to Atlanta, and over 100 miles of paved cart paths that connect visitors and residents to loads of fun and adventure!

Imagine hopping on a golf cart, feeling the cool breeze on your face, and exploring the outdoors. ailboats, canoes, kayaks, motor boats, fishing boats, pontoons, catamarans, paddle boards. Boating is popular in Peachtree City. How could it not be with three beautiful lakes and numerous ponds scattered throughout the city? With all this water, it is only natural that boating is a favorite pastime for many residents.

On any given afternoon, a lone kayaker drifts across glistening waters. The profile of a standup paddle boarder is stark against a blue sky. A skier zips along behind a motor boat on Lake Peachtree. Rowers in their long, sleek boats strain to keep time with others as they learn to row in sync on Lake McIntosh. Families maneuver catamarans. A boisterous party floats by on a pontoon. The beat of a drum leads a colorful dragon headed boat as it races across the lake. A fishing boat hovers around the bridges over Lake Kedron waiting for that allusive bass.

Boating, of course, is an active sport, but it also can be a passive one—there is nothing more peaceful than watching boats glide across the water on a pleasant day.

Boating on Lake Peachtree

Lake Peachtree takes the honor of being the first lake built in the area and the only lake to have private boat docks lining its shore. Residents on the west side of the lake between the lake and Hip Pocket Road live on lots that were first sold as lakefront property back in the town’s early days. Covenants allow these homeowners to build docks and operate motor boats on the lake. There is also a private boat launch on Pinecrest for their use. Households belong to the Lake Peachtree Association and their boats bear the stickers.

Everyone else—Peachtree City residents and their accompanied guests—can only operate non-gasoline powered boats—canoes, kayaks, pontoons, and electric driven boats—on Lake Peachtree. Access to the lake is via a boat launch and dock on Battery Way or a canoe/kayak ramp at Drake Field and at Picnic Park.

The 270-acre city-owned lake also allows residents and accompanied guests to swim and fish (with a state required fishing license). Swimmers must be followed by a safety boat or have a highly visible flotation device if swimming more than 100 feet from shore. Unless you are an excellent paddle boarder who does not fall down, Lake Peachtree is the best lake in Peachtree City to enjoy that sport since it allows swimming. The other lakes do not.

Boating on Lake Kedron

Located on the north side of Peachtree City and surrounded by neighborhoods like The Peninsula, The Point and Smokerise, Lake Kedron is a favorite of kayakers, canoeist and bass fishermen.

The 240-acre lake is owned by Fayette County and operated by the Fayette County Water System and is open to the general public. Sailboats, rowboats and electric motors are allowed on the lake. Hydrocarbon or alcohol-fueled power boats or other vessels so powered are prohibited. Anyone fishing or boating must comply with all DNR rules and regulations. No swimming, skiing, scuba diving or other bodily contact with the water is allowed.

homes, no private docks are allowed on Lake Kedron. Public access to the lake is via the boat launch and dock on Peachtree Parkway North where there is plenty of car and trailer parking.

Boating on Lake McIntosh

Approximately 650 acres, the county-owned Lake McIntosh lies on the Fayette/ Coweta County Line. Its east shore borders the Planterra Ridge Golf Club. This large lake is often the site of boating events like the Rotary Club’s Dragon Boat Races and the Model Yacht Association’s Regatta as well as boating classes with the Peachtree City Rowing Club.

As with Lake Kedron, sailboats, row boats and electric boats are allowed on the lake. Gasoline, hydrocarbon, or alcohol fueled boats are prohibited. There is no swimming. Access to the lake is from the public launch located on TDK Boulevard where there is plenty of golf cart and car parking and designated trailer parking. The county-owned lake can be used free by Fayette County residents. There is a $10 fee for non-county residents.

Regulations for Boating

• All boats on the three lakes must meet the State registration requirements, including decals.

• Boat operators must comply with Georgia Department of Natural Resources operating requirements, including life preservers and age requirements for driving.

• Fishing is permitted. A Georgia state fishing license is required for those age

16 and over.

• Boaters must follow the restrictions applicable to each lake.

• Any person who violates the rules shall be subject to fines and penalties not to exceed the limits established for the municipal court of the city.

Rules for Fishing

Anyone 16 or older fishing at any location in Peachtree City must have a valid Georgia Fishing License issued from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

These may be obtained locally at the Peachtree City Wal-Mart (Highway 54 West) and K-Mart, or online.

Rules for Swimming On Lake Peachtree

Swimmers must have a safety boat, paddle board or flotation device for long distance swimming across lake or for swimming more than 100 feet from shore.

Boat Ramps at Peachtree City Lakes

• Battery Way Park — Located on west side of Lake Peachtree. The park has a newly rebuilt public boat dock and ramp for launching non-gasoline powered boats onto Lake Peachtree. Swimming from Battery Way Park by Peachtree City residents and their accompanied guests is permitted, but a safety boat or a highly visible flotation device is required if swimming more than 100 feet from shore.

• Drake Field — Located on the western shores of Lake Peachtree is Drake Field. Access to the lake is from two different boat ramps. Peachtree City and accompanied guests use only.

• Picnic Park—Located just below Drake Field on the western shore of Lake Peachtree. Canoes and kayaks can easily access the lake from the shore at Picnic Park.

• Pinecrest Boat Ramp — Located on the western shore of Lake Peachtree off Pinecrest Drive. Private boat ramp used by residents on the west side of the lake.

• Lake Kedron — Located off Peachtree Parkway North at Lake Kedron entrance. Public access drive up boat ramp and docks can be used by all Fayette County residents. Lots of parking and trailer parking.

• Lake McIntosh — Located on TDK Boulevard at entrance of Lake McIntosh.

This access, open to the public, has a large drive up boat ramp and docks with plenty of golf cart parking, car parking and designated trailer parking.

Boating Organizations / Events

Interested in finding like boating mates? Here are some boating organizations in Peachtree City.

• Dragon Boats—Now in its 10th year, the Peachtree City Rotary Club’s Dragon Boat Races are held in September. These long, light-weight, brightly colored boats with their elaborate dragon heads seat 10 rowers and are steered by a Cox from the rear and kept moving in sync with the banging of a drummer who sits at the front. The team

of paddlers works in unison to propel the boat forward from a standing start—the aim being to reach the finish line in the fastest time. Generally, a race consists of between 4 and 6 boats. The Rotary, which has purchased its own dragon boats, offers free rowing lessons to anyone who wants to compete. Teams purchasing the chance to compete get an 11-person dragon boat, training, life jackets, and paddles. This year, the Rotary is soliciting more rowers by offering individuals an opportunity to buy a seat on a boat.

Free paddling instruction is offered on Lake McIntosh throughout the summer. Call 770-487-4396 • Georgia Canoe Association—Georgia Canoe Association frequently holds roll practice sessions for canoes and sea kayaks at Kedron Aquatic Center. Check their calendar at gapaddle.com.

• Peachtree City Rowing Club—Located on Lake McIntosh, the Peachtree City Rowing Club encourages local people of all ages to enjoy the art of rowing through instruction and competition. Now in its second year, the Peachtree City Rowing Club is the only rowing program on the south side of Atlanta and one of three rowing clubs in the state of Georgia offering membership and programs for youth and adults.

The club offers a “Spring Break Learn to Row Camp” designed for youth rowers in grades 6 through 12 as an introduction to rowing. By the end of the week, the youth will have an understanding of the basic rowing stroke and will have had valuable time on the water. It also offers learn to row lessons for true novices, masters classes, and high school and middle school classes. For more information, visit ptcrowing.org.

• Turtle Pond Model Yacht Club—Several years ago, some Peachtree City sailboat enthusiasts started sailing their remote-controlled boats on a retention pond filled with turtles near Braelinn Golf Course. Naming themselves, the Turtle Pond Model Yacht Club, the group builds, paints and operates their own individual sailboats and have been responsible for bringing remote-controlled sailing competitions to Peachtree City. For the last two years, the club hosted the American Model Yachting Association’s East Coast 12-Meter Class (EC12M) Regional Regatta on Lake McIntosh. There are dozens of remote-controlled sailboat classes. The EC-12M class boats are about seven feet tall and 5 feet long and are replicas of America’s Cup sailboats. They are built by their owners and rely on the wind (no motors) and the operator’s sailing skills to race. This year the club will host the EC-12M National Championship Regatta on Oct. 26 – 28. The three-day event on Lake McIntosh will draw 40 - 50 boats and about 60 - 70 people from across the country. Boating Safety Tips Always wear a life jacket approved by the US Coast Guard while on boats, around open bodies of water or when participating in water sports. Make sure the life jackets fit snugly.

• Do not drink alcoholic beverages while boating. Bring bottled water.

• If boating alone, make sure someone knows where you are.

• Learn to swim.

• Carry a whistle, especially if you are on a paddle board or in a kayak or canoe.

• Do not overload your boat.

• Keep a close eye on the weather.

• Wear sunscreen and a hat.

Boaters in Peachtree City can rest assured the Peachtree City Fire and Rescue Department is ever ready to respond to boating problems and accidents. First established in the 1980s, the Swift Water Rescue division provides dive rescue/ recovery, crime scene processing and evidence recovery, specialized boat ops, and a water safety team happy to take part in local events. Many firefighters in the department, who serve on the Swift Water Rescue specialty team, are technicians and certified boat operators.

Peachtree City’s Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater, known as “The Fred,” has been named one of the best outdoor entertainment venues in Metro Atlanta. Tucked into a secluded wooded area, the 2,500-seat amphitheater offers great acoustics and an intimate setting that includes lawn seating, picnic tables, and a Gold Section at the foot of the stage. In its 22 years, The Fred has drawn big names like Hall and Oates, Peter Frampton, Michael McDonald, Blake Shelton, Gladys Knight, and the Beach Boys.

Southern Ground Amphitheater

Opened in the summer of 2002 as the Villages Amphitheater, Southern Ground is situated in a neighborhood in the historic Main Street District. The 1,500-seat amphitheater with its 50-foot stage and natural-grass, tiered seating has hosted such artists as Wynona, The Temptations, Blood Sweat and Tears, and the Zac Brown Band, which plays an annual concert to benefit Zac’s Fayette County-based Camp Southern Ground for kids.

July 4th Celebration The 4th of July is Peachtree City’s signature event of the year as thousands of red, white and blue decorated golf carts line the parade route and travel to events. Festivities begin in the morning with the annual Peachtree City parade with bands, floats and golf carts.

Following the parade, the Braelinn Village Shopping Center will host a mid-day 4th of July Party with fun for the kids, DJ music, food vendors and a Golf Cart Giveaway at 12:30pm. The city’s 4th of July Festival begins at 5pm at City Hall Plaza where there will be food, music, family friendly activities, and informational booths for local nonprofit organizations. MOBA SOCCER ACADEMY STARTS YOUTH PROGRAM FALL 2017 MOBA Soccer Academy is offering its own Youth Team Program at the newly built MOBA Soccer Complex on Highway 74, in Peachtree City. The program focuses on getting players equipped for college soccer and opens up an alternative career path for youth aspiring soccer players on the Southside of Atlanta. TEN WAYS TO STAY SAFE AT THE BEACH, POOL OR LAKE Headed to the lake, beach or pool to enjoy a few days of summer? Follow these tips to stay safe in and around the water, especially if you are accompanied by children.

Remember, it only takes seconds for a child to drown. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of injury death for children ages 1 to 4, and three children die every day as a result of drowning. • Know where your children are at all times, and always supervise water play.

• Use an approved fence or barrier to separate your home’s pool from the house.

• Never allow children to be alone near a pool or any water source, including portable pools.

• Have life-saving devices near the pool, such as a pole/hook or flotation device.

• If you leave the pool or beach area, always take the children with you.

• Never swim alone, or while under the influence of alcohol or medications.

• Never swim during thunder or lightning.

• Never dive into unfamiliar or shallow bodies of water. If you do choose to jump into the water, do so feet first.

• Braelinn, a collaboration from architects Joe Lee and Rocky Roquemore, opened in Peachtree City in 1988. The 18-hole layout includes a unique mix of holes with tree-lined fairways, challenging water features and numerous bunkers. Members also enjoy swimming, tennis and dining facilities on site. Planterra Ridge is a popular Jeff Burton and Rocky Roquemore design that was opened in 1994. Players of all ages and expertise will enjoy 18 holes of greens and tree-lined fairways. A practice green, tennis, swimming, clubhouse with pro shop, locker rooms and dining.

• Planterra Ridge, located on Lake McIntosh in Peachtree City, is a popular Jeff Burton and Rocky Roquemore design that was opened in 1994. Players of all ages and expertise will enjoy 18 holes of greens and tree-lined fairways that offer beautiful hill top and lakeside views. There is a clubhouse featuring full service dining, a practice green, tennis, swimming, and club house with pro shop and locker rooms.

• Whitewater Creek Country Club, located in Fayetteville just south of Peachtree City, is home to a true Arnold Palmer signature course and is known for having one of the best layouts in South Atlanta. The 18-hole championship course is made up

of fairways lined with giant oak trees and manicured greens that are nestled among rolling foothills and majestic waterways. The clubhouse features indoor and outdoor dining options overlooking the golf course.

Voted one of the Top 50 driving ranges in the United States, the locally owned Wendell Coffee Golf Center in Tyrone is a 50-acre property with an all-grass, lighted golf driving range; a 9-hole par 3 golf course; and a lighted 9-hole “natural grass” putt- putt course. The center offers PGA golf lessons and classes for all ages and experience. The facility also features a clubhouse with fireplace and bar.

W

hen two real estate agents showed up at the bank in Tyrone and said they wanted to buy some land, the banker Floy Farr, asked them “How much land?”. The response was “15,000 acres” to which Floy replied “That’s a lot of land, what are you going to do with it?” “Build a city.” And so they did.

Pete Knox Jr. of Thomson Georgia had become interested in small communities being built in England following World War II and saw the potential for something similar near Atlanta. On March 9th, 1957 Peachtree City came into existence with Joel Cowan as the first mayor.

It wasn’t long before a bulldozer started carving the first road in the new city. When an engineer pulled a survey instrument from his hip pocket, the name Hip Pocket became the first road. In many ways it is the simplicity of that moment which describes our town. With simple acts of friendship our city has grown to a

community in which everyone is welcomed. Since inception, the people that live here have shaped our city. Big enough to provide the needs of all, but not so large that those new to town can’t quickly feel like it is their home too.

Peachtree City is a community that many call home. Currently there are roughly 35,000 people living in the city, which now spans 25.4 square miles. With 3 lakes and 3 golf courses, it is easy to understand some of the attributes that have made it so popular.

Over 100 miles of multipurpose paths thread their way through the town and create the fabric that brings our neighborhoods together. Peachtree City is in fact a group of 5 villages: Aberdeen, Braelinn, Glenloch, Kedron, and Wilksmoor. Each village has its own shopping area, but all combine to make our great city.

Peachtree City still retains it’s vitality since creation. In the past year new homes have been constructed with more to come because buyers still have a great interest in this area. In 2016 there were over 600 homes sold with a median sales price of $326,000. That compares to $311,500 in the previous year. Presently, the number of homes for sale is at a very low level.

Several dynamics are affecting the real estate market. First, there is a segment of owners who have become empty nesters and look forward to downsizing and staying in the area. Second, we have an increasing corporate presence with families moving here from other areas. And lastly, many of the younger generation who grew up here and moved to larger metropolitan areas are now starting families and know that the quality of life in Peachtree City is hard to beat.

Peachtree City has often been recognized as one of the best places in the U.S. to raise a family. Golf courses, lakes, paths, green areas, and recognized schools all help make our city a wonderful place to live; but it is the people and sense of community that makes Peachtree City a place to call home.

• All Golf Carts using the Peachtree City paths must have a license.

• If you own a Golf Cart, it must be registered at City Hall. You will be required to show a title of ownership and will pay for your license when you register. Liability insurance is not required but is strongly recommended.

• The fee for all golf carts is $15 per year. Non-residents also pay a $100 per year path user fee to offset the $1.7 million in property taxes that the Peachtree City residents pay for path maintenance.

Rules and Regulations pertaining to Golf Carts: Sitting in drivers lap or standing in a moving cart is not allowed.

Who can drive a Golf Cart?: • Those 16+ with or without a drivers license (unless suspended or revoked).

• 15 year olds with a learners permit • 15 year olds without a learners permit may drive when accompanied by a licensed person 18+.

• 12-15 year old with a parent, grandparent or guardian in the front seat.

Where can’t you drive a Golf Cart?: • No golf carts are allowed on Hwy 54, Hwy 74, Peachtree Parkway or Crosstown Rd. • No golf carts are allowed on the sidewalks adjacent to Hwy 74 South. Use paths in lieu of streets when they exist.

Same rules as cars for drinking and driving.

• Special rules for Low Speed Electric Vehicles (LSVs top speed 20-25 mph) must have a tag, amber strobe light, and drivers must be licensed and insured. When operating on the paths, the LSVs must be in “turf” mode or governed mode of 15mph or less.

• Pets on cart paths must be leashed.

ur community is blessed with so many people who care about others and believe that it is their civic and sometimes religious duty to help their fellow man. These concerns have brought together some powerful sources of volunteer labor and a high-level of donations, in manpower, in in-kind donations of goods and services, and in dollars.

When we look around we see successful non-profit retail organizations that collect good clothing and household articles to be resold to a market who cannot afford the new, higher priced goods. These stores are managed by volunteers, and their profits are given back to the community through other non-profit organizations that are in need of the funds.

Some examples of these stores working in our community are: “Clothes Less Traveled,” “Well Spring Home Furnishing,” the “Graceland Thrift Store” operated by Christian City, and “A Better Way Bargains Thrift Store.” All of these stores work with volunteers to receive, sort, price/tag, sell and manage the operation. Thanks to these volunteers the money that is collected is given away to needy non-profits mostly in our community.

A new type of volunteer, faith-based organization the Mid-West Food Bank, has found our community to be the perfect place to develop their ministry which is to help other non-profit organizations to “feed hungry people.” They believe that God has called them to serve and care for others. In 2016 this local organization provided, each month, $1,000,000 worth of food to over 280 non-profit organizations serving more than 188,000 people monthly in and around our community. Four thousand people volunteered over 32,000 hours of service. This achievement was entirely private with no federal or local funds used.

These are just a few of the great organizations that are doing such a wonderful job of caring for the less fortunate around us. This section of every Peachtree City Magazine is designed to highlight the good that our people are doing in various ways. The List of Organizations in this section is meant to lead you to a place for you, your company or business can serve and be part of this great humanitarian effort.

This year 28 employees from Georgia Power’s Metro South Region spent their MLK holiday serving children and senior adults who live at Christian City in Union City. The program was facilitated through the Citizens of Georgia Power group, which encourages employees to sign up to volunteer in the community throughout the year.

Volunteers assisted with playground landscaping at the Children’s Village, finishing a shed in the community garden and taking inventory at a storage facility on the campus. Several volunteers brought their children along for hands-on learning about the importance of community service.

A

Better Way Ministries is a place of refuge for men, ages 17 - 55, struggling with life controlling issues such as drug and alcohol addictions. Founder John Barrow, a man who has faced the darkest of addictions himself, began the ministry 12 years ago this October. His goal was to help others change their lives.

Barrow says that A Better Way Ministries is not simply a rehab facility, but a discipleship program that is “passionate about guiding students to become fully transformed men of God, leaving destructive life patterns behind.” Men live, work and study alongside others for a period of 18 months to complete the life changing program.

A Better Way employs the men in its program in numerous services that support the ministry’s efforts and are beneficial to the community, but its main services are operating a thrift shop, a moving company, and a wood shop. The Thrift Shop receives new inventory daily, including antiques, home decor, custom painted furniture and

electronics. It also offers free local area pickup of re-sellable donations. A Better Way Movers has 15 trucks in service daily and has become one of the premier moving services in the area, offering local and long distance moves and packing services. The Wood Shop custom makes tables from salvaged materials. The ministry builds about 150 tables a year. The handmade tables are currently going into all new Chick-fil-A restaurants across the country as well as re-models.

A Better Way Ministry has recently built a headquarters with group homes and 14 apartments in Senoia and operates its cottage industry from 100,000 square feet of space on Dividend Drive in Peachtree City. It also maintains office space at Pinewood Production Center, where the ministry maintains the grounds and assists with remodeling projects at the production center.
