THE BIRDS AND TREES OF SPYGLASS ISLAND

hile there can be no claim that Spyglass Island in Lake Peachtree is the home to exotic or even unique species of birds, the proximity to water and a variety of trees available for food and shelter make it a fine place for viewing a diverse collection of birds. Immediately after crossing the bridge onto the island you enter a large, dense stand of pines that form a crescent around the north and west sides of the island. Pine Warblers, which spend nearly all their time in pine trees, have been seen on the island along with other pine-preferring birds such as Brown-headed Nuthatches. Wrens and House Wrens have been seen making a meal of insects in broken sections of pine branches. There is an impressive grove of Red Maples on the crest of the island; along with the Box Elders interspersed with them, these provide seeds for an abundance of birds. Not only do the birds enjoy the winged seeds

By David Hermecz (called samaras) but many types of woodpeckers, such as Pileated, Red-bellied, Red-headed Woodpeckers and Northern Flicker, enjoy the insects which are attracted to these trees, and all these bird varieties have been seen on the island. Between the maple orchard and the pines are around ten mature Eastern Red Cedar trees which are a preferred food source to Cedar Waxwings (named in part after the tree) and are also enjoyed by Yellow-rumped Warblers, Catbirds, Robins, and our state bird, the Brown Thrasher among many others. Smaller numbers of other trees on the island provide food for the feathered residents and visitors as well. Sweet Gum trees produce the seed-filled balls that are a prime food source for Carolina Chickadees and American Goldfinches. Flowering Dogwood grow there and are known to attract over 35 species of birds including the Tufted Titmouse, G Northern Cardinal and

Eastern Bluebirds, many of these birds have been seen enjoying Spyglass Island. By allowing you to position yourself nearly halfway across Lake Peachtree, Spyglass Island offers a strategic vantage point for viewing birds that may prefer to avoid the more populated shores of the lake. Sandhill Cranes looking for a place to land have been seen flying directly over the island. Osprey and Bald Eagles have been seen flying close to the island on their way to catching fish in the lake or nearby East Lagoon. Redtailed, Red-shouldered and Cooper’s Hawks as well as Barred Owls have been spotted around the perimeter of the island looking for small game. So if you’re interested in seeing a variety of birds in a tranquil setting, grab a pair of binoculars and head out to Spyglass Island.

Well Worth the Wait!

Peachtree City residents have been waiting several years for the completion of the city’s crown jewel—Lake Peachtree with its new dam, spillway, and updated lakeside recreational amenities. You will find new paths, new landscaping, and new spectacular views of the lake—all of which have been well worth the wait! LAKE PEACHTREE SPILLWAY

The earthen dam that Peachtree City founder Joel Cowan built in 1959 to help draw people to the new town is gone. It has been replaced with a unique piano-key weir design spillway that is the first of its kind in the United States. The new spillway project includes a new bridge wide enough for two golf carts to pass or for one to stop to view

the new construction while the other passes. A new path will connect the bridge to a re-landscaped viewing area of the lake following completion of construction. A formal grand opening will be held when everything is completed, probably sometime in October.

Built 30 years ago when Lake Peachtree was dredged for the first time, Spyglass Island is one of the lake’s newest amenities and a spectacular passive park addition for Peachtree City residents. Unofficially called Snake Island for years by longtime residents, the 7.4-acre island has a new look to go along with its new name. entrance to Spyglass Island is on the east side of the lake, a short walk south of Battery Way Park. Residents can cross over to the island on a newly constructed pedestrian bridge made of concrete and stone. Once there, you will find a golf cart parking area, a path along the northern shore, and scattered tables for viewing and picnicking. A central meadow has been cleared of underbrush and thinned of trees, leaving a lot of large hardwoods and a pine needle floor, while the southern portion of the island has been left in its natural state. A rock embankment surrounds the island. Automobile parking for the Spyglass Island is available at Battery Way Park.

BATTERY WAY PARK

With the building of Spyglass Island has come a number of landscape improvements to Battery Way Park. Trees have been thinned along the lake and boulders, pine needle ground cover, and rail fencing placed. Parking areas for both cars and golf carts have been enhanced. All of this just makes Battery Way Park an even nicer place to picnic and watch the sun set over the lake.

The park has lakeside picnic tables, benches, swings, a fitness area, a tot lot with kiddie swings and a slide, and a newly rebuilt public boat dock and ramp for launching non-gasoline powered boats onto the lake. Swimming at your own risk from the park is permitted for Peachtree City residents and their accompanied guests, but a safety boat or a highly visible floatation device is required if swimming more than 100 feet from shore.

The boat ramps at both Battery Way Park and Pinecrest Boat Ramp on the west side of the lake have been replaced for a more gradual grade into the lake.

the popular Night Market (see page XX.) The park is named after Henry C. Drake, a Peachtree City physician who donated the land behind his clinic to the city in 1979 for use by the youth soccer league. It is located on Lake Peachtree’s western shore and adjacent to the Peachtree City Library and City Hall.

pavilion. The stacked stone and wood pavilion, which sits directly in front of the park’s lake access, will serve as a gathering area, as well as a stage for events at the park. The pavilion’s open-air design retains the open view of the lake from the entire field. Drake Field has plenty of inviting areas to picnic, including a large, central grassy area, tables, and seating areas with Adirondack chairs and porch-style swings. The field’s perimeter has a .25-mile lighted, natural path with multiple shaded seating areas and swings at the shoreline for residents to enjoy lake views. In the last few years the five-acre Picnic Park, which sits adjacent to Lake Peachtree and behind the municipal complex, has been updated with landscaping and benches. The park offers fishing, a horseshoe court, and a large, covered picnic shelter that is a popular site for children’s birthday parties. It also is the site of a fenced in play area, known as All Children’s Playground. The playground features ramps and connectors that allow children of any ability to play. The playground has a cushioned, rubberized surface that is smooth enough for a wheelchair and resilient enough to cushion a fall. Adjacent to the park and playground is ample parking for both golf carts and cars. A temporary pedestrian bridge, constructed by the Peachtree City Running Club, connects the park to Drake Field.

FUTURE PLANS

Funding is in place to replace and widen the busy, multi-use path bridge over Lake Peachtree at Georgia Highway 54 through the 2017 SPLOST. This project will get started in the next couple of years. A second improvement under SPLOST will be the construction of a much larger bridge to connect Drake Field with Picnic Park. Also scheduled for Fall, 2018 will be the construction of a splash pad and pool renovations at Glenloch.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PEACHTREE CITY Part 1 of 4 based on the Historical Timeline of Peachtree City by Joel Cowan and other historical information. Note from the Editors:

We have made every effort to write this series as a fact-based historical document. Every effort has been made to fact check all comments and information. We encourage everyone to visit the copyrighted archives of Joel Cowan as well as any other documents that are considered important. In order to write a brief history about Peachtree City, we chose to write our first of four segments based on the very early years. We intentionally have left out the early settlers’ stories and we will complete segment four with Joel passing the baton.

HOW FLOY FARR FACILITATED THE FIRST PURCHASE OF FARM LAND College Park realtors, Earl Denny, and Golden Pickett were searching for land in Fayette County, and met with Floy Farr the manager of the Tyrone Bank seeking farms that might be available. The bank was owned by the Redwine brothers of Fayetteville who owned and operated the Farmers & Merchants Bank in Fayetteville. Floy Farr directed them to “the largest landowner, Mr. Robert H. “Uncle Bob” Huddleston. He was eager to sell and he encouraged others to sell, but no one believed Denny’s story about a new town. Nothing significant happened until Denny went to see Peter Knox Jr. in Thomson GA. Peter Knox, Jr. was known nationally for his leadership in pioneering the building of prefabricated homes – he and his family were owners of large timber lands. Knox had read a popular book about the building of new towns in England after WW II and was intrigued with the idea of doing something like that in Georgia.

>> peachtree city MAGAZINE Knox put together a group of friends who put up $175,000 to purchase the initial land. They were Tom Standard of Macon, Julian Roberts of Augusta, Tom Cousins of Atlanta, and Willard Byrd of Atlanta. This group created the Fayette County Development Corporation to raise additional funds by selling shares in the intrastate market. The intent was to buy more land and to pay off some of the land debt that had been created by the previous purchase of over 10,000 acres. The public announcement came on the front page of the Atlanta Journal May 5, 1957, where it was reported that Knox, then president of newly-formed Fayette County Development Corporation (FCDC) announced the plan to build a self-sustaining new town in western Fayette County. The town would be situated at the intersections of Highways 74 & 54, alongside the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. It would be only 22 miles to the center of Atlanta assessable via the South Expressway. In May 1957 Joel Cowan was a 21-year-old Junior at Georgia Tech and an ATO fraternity member, and Peter Knox III was his fraternity brother. Peter Knox, Jr. was his fraternity brother’s dad. When Cowan read the Atlanta Journal article he told young Peter III – “if your dad needs a mayor for his new city I’m available.” A week later, after a lunch meeting on the 5th floor of the old Atlanta Athletic Club in downtown Atlanta, Cowan was hired by Peter Knox, Jr. to work for Knox Homes, but his main job during his senior year at Georgia Tech was to court and pacify the landowners and creditors since the intrastate stock offering that was expected to raise funds to supplement their original $175,000 failed. DRAGON BOAT RACES AND INTERNATIONAL FEST Celebrating its 10th year, the Dragon Boats Races and International Festival returns to Lake McIntosh on September 22! This daylong festival combines

international culture and food with the exciting and colorful sport of competitive dragon boat racing. NIGHT MARKET Night Market is a free, public market, featuring music, entertainment, food and artists. There are food trucks and vendors with craft beer, mixed drinks and wine. Entertainment includes local bands, shuffleboard, ping pong, and corn hole. Setting up tents and selling their creations are regional and national artists. The market is held at Drake Field on Lake Peachtree the second Saturday of the month from March to November. There is free parking around the park, but the best bet for Peachtree City residents is a golf cart. This event is intended for those 18 and older.

GOLF CART DO'S AND DON'TS IN PEACHTREE CITY • All Golf Carts using the paths in Peachtree City must have a license. • All Golf Carts must be registered at City Hall • Required to have title of ownership • Pay when you register. • Insurance not required but strongly recommended. • Fee for Registration is $15/year for residents. • Non-residents is $100/year (used for maintenance of paths). Rules and Regulations pertaining to Golf Carts • Sitting on driver’s lap is not allowed. • Standing on a moving cart is not allowed.

• No drinking and driving – same as a car. • When operating on the paths, all carts must be driven no faster than 20 mph. Who can drive a Golf Cart? • 16 year olds plus (with or without a auto drivers license (unless suspended or revoked) • 15 year olds with a learners permit. • 15 year olds without a permit may drive when accompanied by a licensed person 18+. • 12-15 year olds with a parent, guardian or grandparent in the front seat.

Where driving is ALLOWED and NOT ALLOWED? • No carts allowed to cross Hwy 54 and Hwy 74 (use tunnels/bridges only) • Allowed to use crosswalks on Peachtree Parkway – (MUST YIELD TO CARS AT ALL TIMES). • Use paths in lieu of streets when they exist. • May be used on streets within neighborhoods. • May not drive on private property or on Golf Courses (except when playing). PEACHTREE CITY RECREATION AND SPECIAL EVENTS OFFERS A FULL YEAR OF PROGRAMS AND SOME OF THE FINEST RECREATIONAL FACILITIES IN THE AREA. KEDRON FIELDHOUSE & AQUATIC CENTER Constructed in 1995, this multi-purpose facility consists of two pools, a multipurpose/inline hockey rink, and a fieldhouse/gymnasium. The 25-yard competitive swimming pool and the heated instructional pool are open year round and have guards on duty at all times. The gymnasium has 2 full courts separated with a mesh curtain and lined for basketball, volleyball and pickleball. Other amenities include activity rooms, restrooms, showers, changing areas, storage areas and a playground. TENNIS The Peachtree City Tennis Center serves everyone in the community with developmental programs, high-performance programs, summer camps, and drop-in drills and play. This nationally recognized USTA facility has 24 courts (12 hard, 6 soft and 6 covered) and is open seven days a week. The center hosts regional and national tournaments and has a fully-stocked Pro Shop. It also offers pickle ball. Peachtree City also maintains a number of public tennis courts, including 4 lighted courts at Glenloch Recreation Center, 2 courts at Pebblepocket Park, and 2 courts at Braelinn Recreation Complex.

RECREATION COMPLEXES Braelinn The Braelinn Recreation Complex has all amenities for outdoor play. You will find 4 baseball fields (no lights), 2 outdoor basketball courts (no lights), 2 tennis courts (no lights), outdoor physical fitness exercise stations, a playground, and restrooms. Glenloch Glenloch Recreation Center amenities include the Glenloch pool (open in the summer months only), soccer fields and practice area, a multipurpose field, an outdoor basketball court (no lights), 4 lighted tennis courts, a skateboard park, and a playground. Located inside the recreation building is a dance/exercise studio and multipurpose classroom space. McIntosh Trail The 50-acre McIntosh Trail Recreation Complex hosts many of the City’s special events. The complex includes The Gathering Place senior center, a large picnic pavilion, walking trails, a BMX track, and the dog park. The complex is also the starting point for the Flat Creek Nature Preserve and is the home of the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater.

Dog Park The Peachtree City Dog Park is a safe, fenced-in, clean and friendly area for dogs to play and exercise located in the McIntosh Trail Recreation area. The park is divided into three separate areas to accommodate dogs of various sizes and ages. Each section features a gazebo and outdoor seating for owners, mulch ground cover, shade trees, and a water spigot. For more information, visit ptcdogpark.com. BALL FIELDS Peachtree City Athletic Complex This 86-acre athletic complex has 6 soccer fields, 9 lighted baseball fields, the lighted Field of Hope, 4 concession stands, and 4 restrooms. There is also Mountain Bike Park, a 3-mile, single-track and multi-use natural trail system. Jim Meade Memorial Park Meade Park has 7 lighted softball fields, 2 lighted lacrosse fields, concessions, and restrooms. Riley Field Complex Located next to Peachtree City Elementary School, Riley Field was one of the first ball fields in Peachtree City. Amenities include a 6-lane track, 1 lighted football field, 1 lighted multipurpose field, a covered picnic shelter, concessions, and restrooms.

n all-concrete skateboard park is the newest activity addition to the Glenloch Recreation Area. The new park replaces the old 3,500-foot skateboard ramp at the McIntosh Trail Recreation Area. That structure, which had a concrete base and plywood ramps, was poorly laid out and showing wear and tear from years of use and the elements. Designed with input from a volunteer group of resident skateboard enthusiasts and built by 5th Pocket Skateparks in Pennsylvania, the new skateboard park is 4,050 square feet. Its concrete ramps are designed to flow better, making them more playable to all skill levels. The concrete park also will require less maintenance than the old park, will last longer, and is less noisy than the plywood ramp structures. It also was determined that the more centrally located Glenloch location is more accessible to the community which will attract more active use on a day-to-day basis.

BMX TRACK GETS UPGRADES AND NEW PRO START SAFETY GATE

eachtree City BMX officially reopened to excited race fans and happy city officials Saturday July 28th. The track had been closed for a complete renovation of the starting hill and resurfacing the 4 straights of the race course. After nearly 40 years in operation, the BMX track was in desperate need of a new starting hill that was actively sliding into the woods with all the wet weather the south received this spring. With the help of the PTC BMX parents’ association, a new Pro Start safety gate was specified and installed as well. Making PTC BMX only the third track in the US to operate the fully electric, Pro Start barrel gate. Peachtree City parks and recreation took on the task of a complete rebuild under the supervision of 16 year veteran TO, Shayne Robinson lending her expertise along with blood, sweat and tears to bring the new hill, fully landscaped into reality. The fickle Georgia weather wreaked havoc on the demolition, concrete and installation schedule; but somehow the renovations came together just in time for the 4th installment of the exclusive Peach Series race for PTC BMX on July 28th. The new hill features a wider, concrete footprint along with a 6’ flat top for easy rider staging along with 8 wider starting gates. The starting hill sits at a 15 degree angle to accommodate the gate and a longer front run out to allow a super smooth transition from

concrete to Georgia clay. A perfect level of complexity for both novice and expert BMX riders. The Pro Start, barrel style, safety gate; with easy set up and remote gate drops, will allow PTC BMX to continue expanding opportunities for practice and racing year round For more information about the Peachtree City BMX track and programs please visit www.ptcbmx. com or www.facebook.com/ptcbmx/.

PIEDMONT FAYETTE WELLNESS CENTER Helping Women Focus on their Hearts

he American Heart Association states that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women and that 90 percent of all women have at least one risk factor for heart disease. To educate women about heart disease and empower them to make important lifestyle changes, the Dottie Fuqua Women’s Heart Support Network has been launched at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. The goal of this program is also on preventive medicine and wellness, with a focus on reducing the risk of heart disease among women. In addition to customized screening to identify risks and the world-class cardiac care that Piedmont provides, the Women’s Heart Support Network offers classes focused on three key concepts: proper nutrition and diet, mind and body wellness and movement. There are programs and classes around these concepts each month. The hope is that they will provide an instant support group and teamlike atmosphere. Women can also receive free one-on-one wellness coaching with the Women’s Heart Support Network’s program coordinator Lauren Fyock. The Women’s Heart Support Network is made possible in the Fayette community thanks to the generosity of Fayetteville resident Vicki Turner. Since the program was launched this summer, area women have pledged their financial support, participated in the programs and scheduled comprehensive heart screenings. “The goal of the program is for women to take care of themselves,” said Fyock. “It is wonderful to see them take care of each other as well.” To learn more about the Women’s Heart Support Network, visit piedmont. org/womensheartsupport.

THE BASICS OF RUNNING WITHOUT PAIN By John J. Giovanelli, DC

he most common aches and pain experienced by runners are heel pain, foot pain, Achilles tendinitis, shin splints, knee pain, and hip pain. Regardless of which area affects your performance, you have to start by evaluating the feet. The most common foot malfunction is over-pronation. This is when the out heel strikes the ground, and the foot rotates toward the big

toe. Pronation is a normal foot function; however, overpronation results in excessive stress to the foot and ankle joints. How do you know if you over-pronate? Inspect the sole of a worn shoe. You’ll see excessive wear in the outer heel and great toe. You may also notice large callous formations on the inside of the big toe. Overpronation can lead to plantar fasciitis by excessively stretching the soft tissues of the underside of the foot. It can also result in injuries of the ball of the foot and big toe. People often confuse flat arches with pronation. Flat feet/arches refer to a static position, while pronation refers to foot motion during walking/running. While years of excessive pronation can certainly lead to flat feet, people can still over-pronate with a high arch. Poor foot mechanics can also work it’s way up the body, joint by joint, to adversely affect the knees, hips, and spine. For any running malady, always start by having the feet examined. Running shoes differ in their impact capability and pronation resistance. If shoe choice doesn’t solve the problem, you may need custom made shoe orthotics or therapy.

In addition to examining the feet, one can’t underestimate the importance of good posture and flexibility in running. Having one leg shorter than the other by as little as 6mm can cause a significant spinal scoliosis. Short legs are also one of the great contributing factors to hip bursitis and iliotibial band (IT band) tendinitis. The IT band can generate pain in the hip or as far down to the outside of the knee . You can stretch and get massage for temporary relief, but if there’s an undiagnosed short leg, the hip and IT band pain will likely come back. Make sure you seek care by someone who can look at the mechanics of the entire pelvis and lower extremities. Compared to other activities, they require very little in the way of expense, however, the one big requirement to staying active and injury-free is proper footwear. Studies have shown that 86% of Americans wear shoes that are too small, resulting in pain and blisters. In addition to improper fit, many active persons neglect to take advantage of the expertise of a local running store. Athletic shoes are designed for specific gait characteristics and require basic analysis to ensure that each person gets the proper category of shoe as well as the proper size and fit. As to specifics, running/walking shoes are designed to address the different effects of arch heights: high arches tend to be rigid and require additional cushioning, lower arches tend to be more flexible and to roll inward (over-pronation). Determining which category a runner/ walker falls into requires just a few minutes of evaluation by a run specialist, and can make the difference between joy and misery during and after exercise.

eld annually, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. The Walk was first known as Memory Walk and began in 1989 with 9 Alzheimer’s Association chapters raising $149,000 from 1,249 participants. Today, Walk to End Alzheimer’s is held in more than 600 communities nationwide and has raised more than 75 million dollars. Bruce Farr, wife of Fayette County resident and Peachtree City town founder, Floy Farr, suffered from Alzheimer’s and was in Ashley Glen Senior Living and Memory Care. Floy and Ashley Glen staff traveled each year to participate in the Atlanta Memory Walk. However, in 2000 Farr and Elaine Gaillard from Ashley Glen decided to start a Memory Walk in Peachtree City called the Southern Crescent Alzheimer’s Memory Walk. After a very successful first year, Farr turned the Walk over to former Peachtree City Mayor Fred Brown and

Iola Snow, who co-chaired the Walk for the next 10 years. Danny McCranie chaired it for one year and then the current chair, Sue Shaffer, took over and brought the Walk into the 21st century. Beginning with the initial Walk, the Peachtree City Kiwanis, Peachtree City Jazz Edition and the Peachtree City Rotary Club have been very instrumental in making the Walk a success. Over the years, the event has attracted numerous other businesses, organizations and individuals. Today, the Southern Crescent Walk to End Alzheimer’s is not only the second oldest in the state, but also the second largest in number of walkers and dollars raised, bringing in about 3 million dollars for the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, is the only disease in the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed. And early on, the disease requires a caregiver 24/7 unlike most other diseases. More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease, and almost two-

thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease are women. One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. There are an estimated 16 million caregivers of people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias in the United States. The 2018 Southern Crescent Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place Saturday, October 6, rain or shine. The 5K (3.1 mile) walk begins and ends at the Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater parking lot. All ages and abilities are welcome to come and enjoy the Walk, plant their flower in the Promise Garden, listen to the Peachtree Jazz Edition play great music while having coffee and breakfast items before the Walk and hamburgers and hot dogs after the Walk. It is a great time to enjoy a day of fun and camaraderie with friends, family, and community. Registration begins at 8 am, a ceremony takes place at 9 am and the Walk starts at 9:30 am with runners leading the walkers.

A North Cove Christmas Commentary and Photos by James A. Cole

very year, on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the residents of North Cove meet at one home to receive their assignments for the decoration of the neighborhood for Christmas. North Cove is a small, 42 home, development located off the Peachtree Parkway on the edge of Lake Kedron. The neighborhood is designed around the “New Urbanism” concept where the homes were built with narrow lot lines; narrow streets, and some shared driveways. This concept was created to encourage social interaction and provide security because everybody knows their neighbors. The Home Owners Association sponsors about eight events throughout the year. Decorating the neighborhood for Christmas is one of those events. I have many friends in the neighborhood that I’ve known for over 20 years. Being an avid amateur photographer, taking photographs of the beautifully decorated homes, streets and town squares was a great opportunity. The lights are turned on the day after Thanksgiving and turned off the Saturday after the New Year.

emodeling has gone off the charts in recent years. More than 3.8 million residential remodels took place in 2017, according to BuildFax data, compared to just over 2.9 million residential remodels in 2013. As usual, bathrooms and kitchens take the top spots in remodeling projects—81% remodels are bathrooms while 78% are kitchens, according to a 2017 National Association of Home Builders survey. With that said, here are some trends in bath and kitchen remodels. Kitchens and baths are going clean, contemporary, and horizontal in design— open shelves, long and horizontal pulls, and thick countertops. Although some are better in baths or kitchens, natural stone countertops, like granite, marble, quartzite, soapstone, Corian, and quartz, are popular in both. These countertops are durable and come in a wide selection of colors and patterns. Many are stain and scratch resistant. If you want to replace your sinks, you will find a variety of styles in undermount, farmhouse, and bar sinks and vessel bowls. Growing trends in bathrooms are no threshold showers as well as custom frameless glass doors for showers and bath tubs.

he West Village of Peachtree City is the main focus of building activity in Peachtree City with major builders offering a wide variety of homes in different styles and price ranges. But the Cresswind development is uniquely different. With only a small number of homes already built, they have taken the initiative to provide these first new residents a real community within a community. The job of helping the new residents meet their neighbors and make new friends was given to Nicole Jurovics, Lifestyle Director. On the job for less than a year, Nicole is well known by all of the residents and is providing them with a large variety of activities and events with the main purpose of routinely bringing the residents together to meet one another and make new friends. Taking full advantage of the spacious 17,000 sq. ft. clubhouse, Nicole schedules a wide variety of activities led by qualified instructors. Residents regularly use the full fitness center, yoga/aerobics studio, indoor pool, arts-and-crafts room, lounge, billiards room, event room, and demonstration kitchen. Once a month the new residents are provided an opportunity to enjoy a sponsored “lunch and learn” about specific topics of interest to their community. Major events, open to residents only, include resort style entertainment in the amphitheater and club house. Tribute acts such as the Vintage Vixens, singing hits from 60’s and 70’s, and Dean Z-the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist, are scheduled monthly. For residents who enjoy the outdoors, there is a large pool, and pickleball, tennis and bocce courts. Special interest clubs are developing quickly with knowledgeable residents leading the way. Already active are a hiking club, an Alzheimer’s walk group,

a bridge club and a travel club. Signup sheets for the clubs are available at the reception desk. Aside from being present at the events and activities, Nicole keeps in touch with her community on a regular basis. Her newsletter goes to every resident on a quarterly basis, and to give the residents current up-to-date information she has a private page on the web. The community is all about people in their active adult years, who want to live among a like-minded group of people. Along with their new home, they like to have a sense of community. d

they built their Little Free Library #75220 called “Sara’s Spot”. They got an official number when they registered with the national organization that started the idea. It became a family project when her dad, Lance, built it. Cathy feels that this project has been very rewarding, and has taught her daughter stewardship and responsibility.

n a recent walk on the path between McIntosh Trail and the Braelinn Ponds I saw a short post in the ground with a little box of books on top. The sign invited me to take a book free – and leave another one for someone else. Next to the books was a nice bench so that visitors could sit down while they read a selection. Fred Herber’s “Little Free Library” My luck was running high that day because the owner of the Little Free Library was coming out of his house to walk his dog. The owner was Fred Herber who moved recently from the county to Peachtree City when he retired. Fred said that he got the idea to put up a “Little Free Library” when he saw that the cart path at the dam at Lake Peachtree had closed down a similar “Little Free Library”. So, he decided to put one up on the path next to his back yard. Fred was blown away at the immediate

response. He told me, “we have over 30 visitors a day and some have even come at night using the lights from their golf carts to see the books.” He went on to explain that a friend donated the bench after hearing about the traffic. That was enough to peak my curiosity, so I put out the question on Facebook about other little hidden gems in our community. The Cheatham Family's “Little Free Library #75220–Sara’s Spot” Cathy Cheatham, a 1980’s alum of McIntosh High with a 6-year-old daughter responded with photos and her story. Cathy said that she and her daughter began visiting Little Free Libraries when she was about 3 years old. She went on to explain, in June this year, her daughter Sara wanted to have one too! That is when

With my press-pass in my back pocket, I crossed over the yellow caution tapes and walked down the closed path that was shut down for construction. There it was just like Fred said it was – another little free library- the one that inspired him to build his own. No doubt, when the path is reopened there will be many walkers, and cart riders visiting once again. Are there other “Little Free Libraries” that we don’t know about? After visiting with these little hidden gems in our community, I was once again encouraged about the kind of people who we call neighbors.
