FROM THE PUBLISHER

With the weather warming up, everyone in Peachtree City is heading for the paths and the outdoor recreation areas. We thought that it would be appropriate to seek out the most popular picnic and fun areas around the city, and to help everyone find some of the hidden gems. To enhance the article, our team of photographers took up the challenge and took some beautiful photos! We have also expanded our Calendar of Events and show even more events nearby – take a quick look at everything that is happening. New things to look for this summer – we now have some family fun events for kids at the Fred, and two open air market places – the old PTC Farmers Market has been renamed Peachtree City Market and the market on south highway 74 across from the Athletic Complex is called Farmers Market in the Bubble. Once a month the public is invited to a Night Market at Drake Field promising fun, food, art, and music. A new Skate Board Ramp is soon to be opened in Glenlock for those looking for that type of excitement. For more enjoyment, we now have Peter Morrison performing his classical magic show in the Loft at Due South every Friday night - ideal for teenagers and adults. Check out georgiamagicshow.com. You might call it new – Lake Peachtree is on schedule to be at full pool before June (weather permitting). Tom Black is furnishing us with his video updates. You can see his videos posted on our new website peachtreecitymagazine.com and on our app “the Peachtree City App”. Still relatively new is Peachtree City Magazine’s “Great Gift Certificate Giveaway”. In March we will have given 250 people a total of $5,000 worth of real Gift Certificates. The next 25-week promotion begins in April. You can win Gift Certificates to restaurants, retailers, tours and tickets too! It’s free and easy to play – just download the Peachtree City App. Thanks again to our team of writers, designers, photographers and desktop technicians for a great work of love. A huge thanks to our advertisers who enable us to give you the Peachtree City Magazine.

Picnic Places & Play Spaces

Where are they?

PICNIC An outing or occasion that involves taking a packed meal to be eaten outdoors. Everyone picnics. Whether you spread a big blanket for the family, find a shade-covered table to enjoy with friends, or sit in solitude on a bench, there is nothing like eating a meal in the outdoors. With over 100 miles of multi-use path meandering through acres of green space, three lakes, two nature centers, dozens of parks, and mostly glorious weather, Peachtree City offers plenty of places perfect for a picnic. LAKE PEACHTREE Want to picnic by water? Peachtree City has three beautiful lakes and numerous ponds scattered throughout town. • Lake Peachtree, shimmering in the sun in the middle of Peachtree City, is surrounded by picnic parks. The 270-acre lake was the first lake built in

Peachtree City. About 4 miles of multi-use path rims the lake making it easy to access the various parks by golf cart, bike or walking. At the parks, you will find parking spaces for golf carts and cars as well. • Battery Way Park. On the east side of Lake Peachtree, Battery Way Park is a great place to picnic and watch the sun set over the lake. The park

8 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | SPRING – SUMMER 2018 |

has lakeside picnic tables, a tot lot, outdoor exercise equipment, and a newly rebuilt public boat dock and ramp for launching non-gasoline powered boats onto the lake. Swimming from the park is permitted for Peachtree City residents and their accompanied guests, but a safety boat or a highly visible floatation device is required if swimming more than 100 feet from shore.

• Drake Field. Located on Lake Peachtree’s western shore and adjacent to the Peachtree City Library, Drake Field has plenty of inviting areas to picnic, including a large, central grassy area, tables, and seating areas with Adirondack chairs and porch-style swings. The park is named after Henry C. Drake, a Peachtree City physician who donated the land behind his clinic to the city in 1979 for use by the youth soccer league. Recently restored, Drake Field has a .25-mile loop with boardwalks and ridges and public access to the lake. Future plans for Drake Field include an open-air picnic pavilion, gateway entry, and a bridge that connects Drake Field to the Picnic Park. • Picnic Park/All Children’s Playground. This five-acre park, which sits adjacent to Lake Peachtree and behind the municipal complex, has a large, covered picnic shelter that is a popular site for children’s birthday parties. The park also offers fishing, a horseshoe court,

and access to the fenced in All Children’s Playground. The playground features ramps and connectors that allow children of any ability to play. It also has a cushioned, rubberized surface that is smooth enough for a wheelchair and resilient enough to cushion a fall.

LAKE KEDRON For Peachtree City northsiders, the Lake Kedron park is a great spot to picnic and watch the sun set. The park has picnic tables, benches, a large wooden pier, boat ramp, and small playground. Kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards dot the lake which is surrounded by neighborhoods. Fishing is permitted, but swimming is not. The 240-acre lake is owned by Fayette County and operated by the Fayette County Water System and is open to the general public. This portion of the lake and the pier were also the location for a scene from “Spiderman: Homecoming.”

LAKE McINTOSH This 650-acre Lake McIntosh on Line Creek on the Fayette/Coweta County Line has a family-friendly park with a large picnic pavilion and gazebo. The largest of Peachtree City’s three lakes, it has boat ramps, docks, a playground, multi-use paths, restrooms, and substantial parking for golf carts and automobiles. The park provides the only public access to the lake. Boats with electric motors, canoes, paddle boats and sailboats are permitted. Fishing is allowed from the shore and from boats. Swimming is not permitted.

HUDDLESTON POND & PARK This landmark in Glenloch Village is a popular place to picnic. There is a gazebo with picnic tables and a fishing dock. Another amenity at Huddleston Pond is a lighted path around the 4-acre pond that is good for walking and running (1 lap = .4 by miles). Photo Atul Khasnis

LUTHER GLASS PARK (THREE boardwalk with two viewing platforms and benches, the flowing waters of Line Creek. While you are hiking, where you can stop and eat, while pondering the look for the fragile and unusual xeric, or dry, vegetation PONDS) Also known as Three Ponds, Luther Glass Memorial Park is a lovely, wide open green space with a gazebo, tables, and lots of shaded areas where you can sit on a blanket and picnic. Fishing on the three ponds is available to Peachtree City residents only. The park is named for Luther Glass, the first president of the Peachtree City Rotary Club. The Rotary Club built the gazebo in his honor.

FLAT CREEK NATURE AREA There is nothing like a picnic after a long walk, and at Peachtree City’s two nature areas—Flat Creek and Line Creek—you can do just that. Take a sandwich in your backpack and walk through the Flat Creek Nature Area in Peachtree City, a 513-acre wetland that extends 3.5 miles along Flat Creek, from the Lake Peachtree spillway downstream to Highway 74. There is a mulch trail and a 1,200-foot

scenery of trees and plants typical of a Piedmont forested wetland—red maples, chestnut oak, American hornbeam, Black Tupelo, turtlehead ferns and cardinal flowers.

LINE CREEK NATURE AREA Peachtree City families have long enjoyed a walk and picnic along Line Creek in the Line Creek Nature Area. Local Boy Scouts and members of the Peachtree City Rotary Club helped furnish the park with picnic tables as well as small bridges, a rock amphitheater, and a kiosk. This 70-acre preserve on the Fayette/Coweta county line, also has a fishing dock on a small pond, a gazebo, and several miles of nature trails. The Ridge Trail (0.8 mile) loops from the parking lot, up the hill and through a hardwood forest. A primitive campsite that overlooks the creek is accessible from here. The shorter but steeper Bridge Trail leads down the slope to

that grows only on granite outcroppings, such as the ones you will find here. The outcroppings are a great place to play in the water (watch out, the shoals can be slippery) or sit, have a sandwich, and contemplate the stone foundation of what is believed to be a Civil War era bridge used to cross Line Creek.

STARR’S MILL Picnicking mixes nicely with everything— including history. Take your picnic basket and drive just a couple miles south of Peachtree City to Starr’s Mill. Located on Whitewater Creek, the mill and dam are owned by the Fayette County Water Department, and the park is open for picnicking, fishing and exploring. You cannot go into the mill, but you can enjoy its peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, take photos, and read about its history on markers in the park. Starr’s Mill has been photographed for numerous magazine covers

which was once the community of Shakerag, long before Peachtree City, incorporates numerous facilities. NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS and articles and has been a location for two popular movies—“Fried Green Tomatoes” (1991) and “Sweet Home Alabama” (2002). Starr’s Mill is located at 115 Waterfall Way, Fayetteville, near the intersection of Highways 74 and 85. The park is open 6:30am to 6pm EST; 6:30am to 8:30pm DST.

FREDERICK BROWN JR. AMPHITHEATER Wine, candles, catered? If you like your picnic a little fancier—and with music—a summertime concert at The Fred is the place to be. The entertainment venue has picnic tables and a Gold Section at the foot of the

stage with cloth-covered tables. Bring your own picnic basket and cooler or purchase food and drink from The Fred’s restaurant vendor. For tickets, call The Fred box office at 770-631-0630 or go to amphitheater.org. See more about The Fred on page 20.

McINTOSH TRAIL RECREATION COMPLEX The Fred is located in the McIntosh Trail Complex, where there is plenty of space for picnics and fun. Shakerag Knoll Picnic Area with its large picnic pavilion sits in the center of the 50-acre complex and is a spacious area for parties and family reunions. The area,

Throughout Peachtree City, you will find numerous neighborhood parks with playgrounds and tot lots. Look on the fold-out Peachtree City map in this magazine and you will see locations for parks like Beaver Dam, Big Pine, Blue Smoke, Pebblepocket, Willowbend, Rockspray, Smokerise, Village Green and Windalier Ridge. You will find playgrounds along with tables, benches and plenty of perfect spots to enjoy what’s in your picnic basket in the great outdoors. Parks in Peachtree City are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, unless otherwise noted on signs.

SERENBE PLAYHOUSE If you love theater and admire innovativeness in interpretation, you must see at least one Serenbe Playhouse production this year. Founded in 2009, Serenbe Playhouse is considered “the most intrepid and fearless of theater companies” by many and a Top 20 theater in the nation by Playbill. Serenbe Playhouse productions are performed outdoors, with the specific aim of making nature a part of the experience. Executive/artistic director Brian Clowdus sets each new production on a new acre of land in Serenbe and accomplishes feats of design—be it landing a real helicopter for “Miss Saigon” or creating a full-scale carnival with carousel for “Carousel.” Plays are performed “rain or shine.” The current 2018 season consists of “The Little Mermaid,” “Peter Pan,” “Titanic, the Musical,” “The Seagull,” “Sleepy Hollow,” and “The Snow Queen.” Tickets can be purchased at serenbeplayhouse.com or you can call the box office at 770-463-1110.

How lucky is Fayette County to have two open-air music venues? Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Amphitheater is cozily situated in a neighborhood in the historic Main Street District. The 1,500-seat amphitheater with its 50-foot stage and natural-grass, tiered seating has hosted such artists as Wynona, Little River Band, The Temptations, G 20 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | SPRING – SUMMER 2018 |

SHOPPING HAS ALWAYS BEEN PART OF THE MASTER PLAN FOR PEACHTREE CITY!

P

eachtree City was designed around a Master Plan of village shopping— everything you needed just a golf cart ride away from every neighborhood. The result of that concept today is 16 bustling village shopping areas. From upscale shopping to thrift and consignment bargains, you will find a store for whatever price fits your budget or shopping list. There are clothing, gift and specialty shops. Large grocery stores, large pharmacies, and specialty markets are scattered around the town, along with every type of service needed—banks, 34 |

THE AVENUE A Community Gathering Place

N

early 15 years after opening, The Avenue in Peachtree City is steadily moving toward a new goal of becoming the “Main Street” of Peachtree City—a central place that provides the community with shopping, dining, and opportunities to gather, socialize and celebrate. With nearly 50 stores and restaurants, The Avenue has for some time offered a dynamic mix of select local merchants, specialty restaurants, and national retailers. But recently under the direction of General Manager Andrew Moth, the shopping center has focused more on creating and developing a program of events that is enjoyable for the community and brings people to The Avenue just to have a good time. Much of the fun at The Avenue centers around its large Central Park green space and gazebo area. Holiday activities include an Easter Egg Hunt and a Spring Festival with a petting zoo, face painting, games, and giveaways. The 4th of July Food Truck Frenzy finds stores closing at 6pm as the invasion of food trucks begins. The Fall Festival offers trick-or-treating, magicians, costumed movie characters, stilt walkers and balloon artists, while December’s Holidays at The Avenue features Santa and Mrs. Claus, hot cocoa and horse drawn carriage rides. 36 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | SPRING – SUMMER 2018 |

The summer movie series, called Monday Movies, shows free family films—two in June and two in July—on an outdoor screen in Central Park. The Avenue provides popcorn, a bounce house, face painting and giveaways before the movie begins at dusk. At The Avenue’s Touch-A-Truck event in May, kids can touch and climb inside a host of trucks, including fire rescue, police, construction, and UPS. Started in 2017, Thursday Night Out is an event geared toward the older crowd. On the first Thursday of the month from March through October, live music, food and drink specials entice adults to The Avenue to meet friends and socialize. General Manager Moth, who realizes the importance of a variety of eating options in drawing people to a shopping area, is currently focusing on bringing even more restaurants to The Avenue. The Avenue exudes a fun and creative atmosphere for its patrons. Unique lifesize statuary are in place throughout the shopping center. A 10-foot chess/checkers board has movable pieces. There are two sparkling fountains, patio dining areas, and benches for relaxing. A six-foot-tall star and reindeer are displayed during December. Recently, The Avenue unveiled a spectacular mural, depicting Peachtree City’s signature arts and activities. Commissioned by The Avenue and created by artist Shannon Lake,

the mural is located on the Georgia Highway 54 side of Books-A-Million and is part of a statewide push to establish a “mural trail” highlighting localities around Georgia. In keeping with the Peachtree City lifestyle, The Avenue has designated 54 golf cart parking places. There also are two charging stations with a total of 8 outlets for the convenience of patrons. The charging stations are located near Central Park at the back of the parking lot facing Victoria’s Secret. What does The Avenue have planned for the

coming months? Moth says he and his team definitely want to focus more on developing adult events with more evenings of live music, good food and drink. WIFI throughout The Avenue is also part of the thought process. Whatever The Avenue has up its sleeve, you can bet that it will be entertaining, unique for shopping areas, and inviting to the community, making The Avenue “the place to be” in Peachtree—just like walking up Main Street. d

P

iedmont Fayette Hospital, Pace Lynch Corporation and Pinewood Forest are teaming up to launch an innovative, medically integrated wellness center in the heart of the Pinewood Forest community with the announcement of the Piedmont Wellness Center at Pinewood Forrest. “A wellness center is different from a gym or a fitness center because it offers programs that are tracked and overseen by medical professionals,” said Michael Burnett, Piedmont Fayette’s Chief Executive Officer.

Groundbreaking on the 60,000 square foot, twostory facility took place in March. The facility, which is expected to open in November of 2019, will create a culture of health and wellness, supporting the healthy lifestyle goals of the community and acting as a bridge between medical care and wellness. In addition to the six-lane lap pool and therapy pool, there will be multiple fitness studios, an active gaming component, a spin room and 18,000 square feet of fitness space on two floors. Another pinnacle feature is the licensed D1 Sports Training program, the first in the state of Georgia, offering

specific sports training for athletes from youth to professional level with dedicated space for indoor and outdoor fitness training. The Wellness Center will engage with the outdoors outside a wall of glass by connecting with a central park, an open air elevated exercise platform, activity lawns, and over 15 miles of integrated trail and path systems that meander throughout the community and nature preserve areas. TRAINING WITH PAIN? DON’T REACH FOR THAT MEDICINE BOTTLE!

I

f you have a sports injury, you don’t have to reach for the bottle. There is another approach, one that provides increased speed and effectiveness of healing. NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) like ibuprofen and naproxen should be used with caution. These over-the -counter drugs work by inhibiting the COX enzymes that enable your body to produce inflammation. They do reduce inflammation, so why is that bad? Inflammation is a natural biological reaction that allows wounds to heal. Without it, the wound would never heal. Multiple studies have shown that excessive use of NSAID’s delay this healing process by inhibiting one’s defenses against infection, excess bleeding, and the formation of scar tissue. People with existing cardiovascular ailments have significantly greater risk of cardiac related death. Kidney damage is also greatly increased by over medication. If you are injured, there is a better way to treat the injury:

By John Giovanelli, DC

1) Above all else, do not engage in any activity that aggravates the wounded area. 2) VERY light exercise can help. The key is that you have to be free of pain. This does not apply to fractures. A professional should prescribe exercises for fracture rehabilitation. 3) Mobilization like massage, stretching, and joint manipulation can help reduce pressure by draining the inflammation via the lymphatic system. If this mobilization results in continued irritation of the damaged tissue, these efforts will be counterproductive. It’s always best to seek the help of a chiropractor or physical therapist. 4) For severe pain, ice the first 72 hours. Alternate ice and heat after that. Don’t get too

excessive with either. Next time you have an injury, be careful not to over medicate, as you will only prolong your agony. Instead of overdoing the pills, visit a physical therapist or chiropractor. Inflammation as discussed in this article refers only to acute inflammation. Chronic inflammation in the body causes numerous maladies that need special attention not discussed here. John Giovanelli, practices traditional chiropractic, is a Palmer Graduate, and has practiced in the Peachtree City area for 30 years.

foundation. Over the past year the number of real estate sales has risen over 6% with the number of sales increasing from 714 homes in Peachtree City to 730. The strongest interest is in homes between $250,000 and $500,000. Although the number of sales remained the same, prices increased over 5%. The greatest price increase took place in homes under $250,000 reflecting over an 8% increase in value. Homes over $500,000 experienced an increase in the number of sales of 14% with an increase in value of 4%. Overall, Peachtree City continues to be an oasis on the Southside of Atlanta attracting a combination of young families and professionals moving to

the area. This is in combination with the number of households of active adults who are enjoying the opportunity to age in community with family and friends. If you are considering a change now is an excellent time to consult with your real estate professional. Interest rates are at very low historical levels and opportunities to find a new home in the area have never been greater. ales of homes are soaring with the use of professionally produced aerial videos. In fact, homes marketed with aerial photography and video sell 68% faster, as reported by Multiple Listing Service, and the National Association of Realtors report that 73% of homeowners prefer to list with an agent who uses videos. Initially, drone aerial photography was only considered as an option for multimillion dollar listings, but real estate agents are discovering that the benefits reach beyond luxury listings. Today, aerial photography offers affordable aerial perspectives of homes and neighborhoods to enhance the indoor tour experience. Tom Black, owner of Overview 3sixty Aerials, said, “over the past 2 years, approximately 20% of the listings that were filmed have been million dollar listings, 50% have been between $500,000 to $900,00 and 30% have been under $500,000. The sky is the limit with aerial photography.” Drone photography fills a void between traditional ground photography and aerial photographs taken from a plane or other aircraft. Drones can film from 2 ft. off the ground and soar up to 400 ft. This dynamic range showcases all angles of a home, it’s layout, features, and property lines. in real estate. High quality aerial photography and video produces impressive marketing campaigns that differentiate and set apart property listings. An experienced professional drone pilot can capture aerial images that help you to sell listings and will go beyond that to also help you sell lifestyles. Drones help the homebuyer to see the overall lifestyle of an area, as well as the home, and convey a story with all the benefits and value. Today drones and aerial photography are giving both the buyer and the seller a modern tool when making an important real estate decision.
