


2021 was marked by uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic that started in early 2020. Fortunately, the worst-case scenarios for changes in traffic volumes did not materialise in Rauma. The anticipated traffic volumes were clearly exceeded in pulp and sawn timber exports, for example. Total port traffic amounted to just over five million tonnes, showing an increase of 1.3 per cent from the previous year. In 2021, the port of Rauma handled 209,000 container units (TEU), showing a decrease of 4.1 per cent.
At the end of 2021, construction work on the fourth phase of the Petäjäs expansion area was completed. The construction of the west terminal and phase 5 of the Petäjäs expansion project have been postponed, as we are still waiting for a decision on the appeal against the terminal permit. The road connection to Järviluoto was completed on schedule at the end of 2021. The connection enables the development of the Järviluoto area for the future needs of our port and industrial
turnover was 11.7 million euros (11.4 million euros in 2020), with a profit of 1.8 million euros (1.9 million euros). The increase in the company’s turnover compared to 2020 was mainly due to the
increase in the export of forest industry products, parcelled goods, and custom orders. The company’s profit amounted to 0.1 million euros (-0.2 million euros).
2021 was the third year of operation for the Port of Rauma subsidiary, Botnia Port Service Ltd. Botnia Port Service Ltd’s turnover remained at the same level as in 2020. However, the company was able to achieve positive results due to enhanced efficiency.
Phase 4 of the Petäjäs expansion project, which started in 2019, was completed by the end of the year, except for the paving work in the field area. The total value of this investment is approximately 17 million euros. Other investments in the port were very small, mainly relating to the renovation of field areas and railways.
In 2021, approximately 8.5 million euros were invested in the projects (9.5 million euros in 2020).
In 2021, total traffic in the Port of Rauma amounted to 5.1 million tonnes, showing an increase of 1.3 per cent compared to 2020. The small increase in traffic was due to a higherthan-expected increase in forest industry exports, and an increase in import traffic. Imports of parcelled goods (including metals, machinery, and equipment) increased significantly compared to the previous year.
During 2021, 209,000 container units (TEU) were shipped via Rauma, showing a decrease of 4 per cent compared to the previous year. The weight of goods transported in containers decreased by more than 2 per cent. Of total port traffic, exports accounted for 3.4 million tonnes (+3.2%), imports for 1.6 million tonnes (+9.4%), and domestic traffic for 0.066 million tonnes (-73%). The number of ship calls was 952, 8 more than in 2020.
The average size of vessels decreased slightly, as the total tonnage of vessels was 9 per cent lower than in the previous year.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some events and trade fairs were cancelled, including the international Transport Logistic trade fair in
we participated in the Rauma Sea Network Day 2021, which was part of the 140th anniversary celebration of maritime education. In addition, we participated in the international Wood From Finland conference, which was held as a virtual event, and organised a few smaller customer events.
NPS stands for “Net promoter score”. In brief, it answers the question: How likely would you recommend our company/product/service to a friend or
were asked how likely they would be to recommend the Port of Rauma on a scale of 0–10, more than half (53%) of the respondents gave a score of 9–10.
The net promoter score of the Port of Rauma is 47. The NPS is calculated by subtracting the percentage of detractors from the percentage of promoters. The score can range from -100 to +100.
In 2007, the port operations were granted an environmental permit that is valid indefinitely and guides the actions of Port of Rauma Ltd, its leaseholders and the businesses operating in the port area. The process of reviewing the conditions of the environmental permit began in 2014 and took effect from the end of 2018. The conditions were reviewed again in 2018.
The Port of Rauma participates in water and fish monitoring off the coast of Rauma using methods approved by the Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. In addition, the impact of the Petäjäs expansion project on waters will be monitored in accordance with a separate monitoring programme.
The process of replacing the lighting in the quay and field areas with LED lights, which started in 2017, was largely completed. The investment has provided savings in energy consumption.

In 2021, staff training covered the following themes: Teams and PDS training, mental wellbeing, increasing understanding of the company’s finances / budgeting, a review of the Defence Forces’ PV Rauma 2021 exercise, and first aid (EA1 course). In addition, the new financial and payroll management systems introduced in the administration required extensive training at the beginning of the year.
The Port of Rauma has maintained an outstanding safety record, which is reflected in the number of accident-free work days. On December 31, 2021, the company achieved a total of more than 3,000 consecutive accident-free days. The Finnish Vision Zero Forum
