OH, BABY! A GRANDMOTHER’S TAKE ON THE FIRST YEAR
Ah, the first year of a baby’s life. My daughter is very lucky that I’m a stone’s throw away.
Now, I’ve been through it before with my own kids, but watching my grandbaby, that’s a whole different ballgame. Babies are adorable, tiny, squishy dictators with zero regard for personal space, sleep schedules, or your sanity. But the privilege of watching them grow day by day? That’s the good stuff, and the reward for surviving parenthood the first time around.
I thought I knew love when I had my own kids, but my grandson? Next level. It’s the kind of love that makes you feel slightly guilty, like, “Wait… do I love this baby more than I love my own kids?” Seriously, I mean, I adored my children, of course, but let’s be honest, I was also stressed, sleep-deprived, and wondering if I’d ever go to the bathroom alone again. Grandparent love is different. It’s deeper, softer. Probably because you’re not the one changing the diapers at 3 a.m.
Here’s what I’ve learned: parenting today is a whole new world. Apparently, half the things I did with my own kids would get me reported to Child Protective Services today. Back in my day, we put the baby in a bouncer in front of the TV so we could get five minutes of peace.
Now? No screens before the age of three, and don’t even think about showing them a tablet. Apparently, a single episode of Bluey could fry their delicate little brain cells.
And food? I’m still scratching my head with this. One of my children has a nut allergy, and I spent years nervously avoiding peanuts, convinced that one sniff of peanut butter would cause instant catastrophe. Today, pediatricians are practically handing out jars of peanut butter in the hospital room. “Early exposure helps prevent allergies,” they say. Well, okay then!
And just when you think you’ve got a handle on things – enter social media. Oh. My. God. When I had babies, advice came from your mother, your neighbour, and that one parenting book everyone pretended to read. My daughter pulls up TikTok and is bombarded with a thousand different conflicting opinions on how to sleep train, feed, burp, dress, and breathe around the baby. Still, some things never change. That baby scent when they snuggle into your neck, the sound of their little laugh, the first gummy smile. Pure magic. The best part of grandparenting? You get all the love, all the cuddles, and none of the sleepless nights.

celebrating mom GREAT GIFTS FOR MOMS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE
Mother’s Day is an opportunity to show moms how much they’re loved and appreciated. Though many moms may insist they don’t want anything beyond spending the day with their children, gifts are a big part of Mother’s Day.
No two moms are the same, and though standards like flowers and greeting cards will always have a place on Mother’s Day, the following are some gift ideas that can put smiles on the faces of moms from all walks of life.
Bookworm
There’s no end to the gift options for mothers who love to curl up with a good book. Of course, some new books may delight Mom, but gifts that can improve the reading experience also merit consideration. For example, an ergonomic backrest reading pillow can make bedtime reading sessions more comfortable and ensure Mom’s neck and back get ample support as she reads the latest page-turner. A nightstand book holder also can be ideal for moms who can’t seem to keep track of their bookmarks.
Fitness enthusiast
Some moms simply love to get in a good workout. Shoppers whose mothers or wives love to break a
sweat might want to investigate home gym equipment, as many fitness enthusiasts transformed part of their homes into exercise areas during the pandemic. If that sounds like the mom on your shopping list, then a suspension training system won’t take up much room but can provide an intense, full-body workout. A new yoga mat, some wireless Bluetooth headphones or a compression stretching mat are some additional gifts that might
make exercise-loving moms smile this Mother’s Day.
Traveller
Moms whose children still live under the same roof may not have much opportunity to travel, but empty nesters and grandmothers might. For such moms, a foldable, hanging travel bag can make it easy and convenient for mom to carry all her toiletries and access them without taking up what’s often minimal hotel
room counter space. For moms who want to document their excursions, a leather travel journal encourages them to note their experiences and gives them something they can revisit for years to come. Of course, some new luggage can make the perfect gift for newly retired moms who can’t wait to start visiting places on their travel bucket lists.
Businesswoman
Millions of moms manage to juggle the obligations of family life with a challenging career. Mother’s Day can be a great time to recognize that balancing act. A self-heating coffee mug can ensure Mom’s morning cup o’ joe doesn’t go cold as she traverses her way through a hectic morning routine. Another great gift is a charging mouse pad that can charge all of Mom’s devices even while she’s working. If you want to help Mom remain calm as she navigates her way through a day filled with personal and professional obligations, an essential oils diffuser can create a sense of relaxation on the most hectic of days.
No two moms are the same. Fortunately, great gifts can be found for moms from all walks of life this Mother’s Day.

outdoor fun HOW TO GET KIDS INTO GOLF
When a global pandemic was declared by the World Health Organization in March 2020, parents were left scrambling for fun and healthy ways to keep their kids occupied. Virtual learning sessions replaced days spent in the classroom, and many extracurricular activities were cancelled to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Parents tried to find activities that kids could enjoy while still adhering to social distancing guidelines, and that led many moms and dads to consider golf.
Golf is an outdoor activity that does not require a large group of people, making it an ideal recreational activity during the era of social distancing and today in a post-pandemic world.
It’s also a great way for parents to get kids to exercise and keep them off their devices as they enjoy the great outdoors. Golf is a difficult game, and that difficulty may discourage some youngsters from playing. However, parents can overcome that hurdle by trying to get their kids excited about playing golf with these tips.
Enroll kids in a youth organization
An organization like Youth on Course excites many youngsters because they see children their own age playing golf. That means they can go golfing with friends and talk about the game when they’re not on the course.
Get the right gear
PGA recommends getting kids a putter and a wedge that are made
for kids their height, noting the availability of clubs specifically made for juniors. An age-appropriate wedge
is short and easy to get in the air. That should make it easier for kids to play, increasing the chances they’ll enjoy themselves.
Keep it light and fun
Golf can frustrate even the most skilled professionals. It’s important to downplay any frustration kids feel. Parents playing alongside their children must avoid growing frustrated if their own rounds aren’t going well. PGA advises parents to not put any expectations on youngsters as they learn the game, focusing instead on how much fun it is to play a round at a beautiful course. Golf is a great game for people of all ages, including youngsters.

summer camp OPTIONS FOR EVERY CHILD
Summer camp season will be here before parents know it. While children anxiously await the last day of school, adults know that it can be challenging to keep kids occupied and mentally stimulated when they aren’t in the classroom. Although it may be alright to enjoy a few days lounging around and playing video games, too much sedentary behaviour is not good for anyone, even children. Families turn to summer camp to provide children with activities to occupy their time when school is not in session.
Summer camp gives kids a chance to spread their wings and enjoy new adventures. When seeking camps, families can consider interests, proximity, cost, and other variables. Here are some of the different types of camps families can consider.
Day camp
Day camps are a popular choice. Day camps tend to be general recreation camps that offer an array of activities. Campers are dropped off (or bussed) in the morning and arrive home early evening. These camps are readily accessible and run by various organizations. Some camps enable
you to pay by the week, rather than committing to an entire season.
Sleep-away camp
Like the name implies sleep-away camp hosts campers overnight, typically for several weeks. This may be their first extended time away from home, and there’s bound to be a few nerves that spring up. Roundthe-clock activities and chances to bond with their peers can help kids
overcome fears of being away from home.
Academic camp
Academic camps focus their attention on various subjects, putting likeminded children together. Academic summer programs ensure children’s brains stay active, helping students avoid that dreaded “summer slide.” Some of these camps mimic a school day so they are familiar to
kids. Academic focus may vary from general academia to specific subjects like STEM to astronomy to the arts. Scout camp
Boys and girls participating in scouting programs often have the option to attend summer camp. During camp kids will have an opportunity to earn badges and advance their rank. Many scout districts have relationships with a specific scout campsite where troops from all over live and advance together for a week or so during the summer.
Fitness and sports camps
Fitness-minded campers or those who play sports can investigate camps that focus on fitness and sports performance. These may be more rigorous than other types of camps since they involve lots of physical activity. Wilderness preparation camp is another type of camp that may fit into this category. It will highlight survival training and foster active hikers and campers. Summer camp options abound. It’s only a matter of identifying a path for children and then seeking a camp that offers the desired program.

family fun KID-FRIENDLY MUSKOKA
WORDS BY ANDREW HIND
Summer is almost upon us. Soon, many of us will be answering the loon’s call and heading to cottages and resorts in Muskoka. Here’s some family-friendly suggestions for enriching your summer escape to Muskoka.
Stay
Muskoka offers an abundance of riches when it comes to accommodations–cabins, motels, boutique inns, chain hotels, and resorts. Deerhurst Resort (deerhurstresort.com), in Huntsville, embraces families like no other, with an unrivaled range of activities for all ages. The resort’s 760 acres is home to fresh air fun that ranges from swimming and boating on Peninsula Lake, golf on verdant greens, ATV tours and mountain biking among the forested hills. Rainy days are perfect for enjoying in the indoor pool, treehouse play space, and rockclimbing wall.
Play
One can’t use the words ‘kids’ and ‘Muskoka’ in the same sentence without mentioning Santa’s Village
(santasvillage.ca), the venerable–and venerated–theme park that has been welcoming guests for seven decades. Much updated and expanded in recent years, the park retains the charm of yesteryear but captures the thrills and fun expected by modern youth. There are over 30 attractions in all. No visit to the park would be complete without a ride on Candy Cane Express train and Santa’s Summer Sleigh jetboat. Don’t forget a visit with the Jolly Old Elf in his summer cottage.
Time travel
Travel back in time to early cottage country at Muskoka Heritage Place
(muskokaheritageplace.ca) in Huntsville. Learn about First Nations and settler experiences in the excellent museum, then head outside to explore the heritage buildings that form a recreated pioneer village. Make sure to take a ride aboard the Portage Flyer, a historic train that once chugged along the world’s shortest commercial rail line.
Muskoka Lakes Museum (mlmuseum.com) in Port Carling is also worth a visit. The exhibits–ranging from First Nations lifestyle to wooden boat building–are first class. Kids enjoy the fur trade scavenger and traditional cottages games (bocce and croquet) on the lawn.
Savour
There’s nothing like ice cream on a warm summer day. Watch boats – including steamboats if you’re lucky–passing through the historic locks at Port Carling and then head for a cooling cone at Muskoka Chills (121 Medora Street). The ice cream, your choice of soft serve or scooped, is great and the chalkboard humour refreshing (why do ice cream cones carry an umbrella? Because there’s
always a chance of sprinkles!), but what sets Muskoka Chills apart is the fact it is run by cottaging teenaged cousins.
Sail
The steamships RMS Segwun and Wenonah II (realmuskoka.com) are iconic to Muskoka, keeping alive a tradition of steamboating on the lakes dating back 150 years. With a range of scenic cruises, children will love the interactive Pirate Cruises–costumes are encouraged for this freebooting adventure–and the Noah’s Ark Cruises, where they meet and learn about native mammals, reptiles, and birds, courtesy of the team at Speaking of Wildlife.
