PRIORITIZING SAFETY FOR SUMMER
Summer is a season of adventure – a time to trade routines for road trips, swap screens for sunsets, and fill days with barbecues, beach visits, and backyard fun. But amid all the excitement, safety should remain front and centre. Whether you’re venturing into the wilderness, lounging by the lake, or just enjoying your own backyard, a little preparation goes a long way in making sure those memories are joyful and stress-free.
Hydration and sun protection are summer’s golden rules. Always carry more water than you think you’ll need and apply broad-spectrum SPF frequently. Hats, UV-protective clothing, and sunglasses are essential –especially for kids. If you’re headed into grassy or wooded areas, don’t forget insect repellent and post-adventure tick checks.
One of the best parts of summer? Lake life. Time spent around water – especially with little ones – requires heightened awareness. Always use a Canadian Coast Guard-approved life jackets for children and infants, even on calm waters. Babies are especially vulnerable to sudden gusts of wind and loud engine noise while boating. Shield them from the wind with appropriate covers and protect their ears with baby-friendly noisereducing earmuffs. Always keep them out of direct
sunlight and secure them safely, away from edges or unstable surfaces.
If you’re swimming, do so in designated areas and always keep an eye on children, even in shallow water. Assign a dedicated water watcher who is not distracted by phones or conversations. And remember – floaties are not a substitute for life jackets.
Campers, hikers, and day-trippers should also prepare carefully. Tell someone your plans, pack a first-aid kit, and carry a charged phone along with a physical map. Know the area, understand wildlife risks, and don’t underestimate how quickly weather conditions can change.
At home, stay alert, too. Grills, fire pits, and fireworks bring added risk. Keep these well-monitored and out of reach of children and follow local safety guidelines. Finally, lead by example. Respect the outdoors, leave no trace, and create a safe space for everyone to enjoy – whether they’re sharing your boat, your picnic table, or your trail.
With a little extra care and a lot of love, you can make this summer safe, fun, and unforgettable – from backyard to boat, and everywhere in between. One last thought: don’t forget to take videos and pictures.
There’s always a magic moment waiting to be caught.

child safety
HOW TO PREVENT HOT CAR EMERGENCIES
Parents often do everything within their means to keep their children safe in and outside of their homes. Throughout the years, child safety seats have helped reduce the risk of serious injuries to children while riding in vehicles. However, incidents of hot car injuries and deaths have increased.
In the United States alone, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates about 40 children a year die from heatstroke after they were left or became trapped in a car. Roughly one child every 10 days loses his or her life in a hot car. The NHTSA also says there have been more than 950 hot car deaths among children since 1998. The National Safety Council says nearly every state has experienced at least one death of a child succumbing to heat stroke in a hot car since 1998. The agency reports that a record number of 53 children died after being left in hot vehicles in 2018 and 2019.
PEDIATRIC VEHICULAR HEATSTROKE (PVH) POSES A SERIOUS THREAT. HEALTH EXPERTS WARN THAT A CHILD’S BODY TEMPERATURE RISES THREE TO FIVE TIMES FASTER THAN AN ADULT’S.
Pediatric vehicular heatstroke (PVH) poses a serious threat. Health experts warn that a child’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult’s. When a child remains in a vehicle without ample ventilation, that child’s body temperature can rise quickly, turning into a dangerous situation. Heatstroke begins when the core body temperature reaches about 40°C.
Many children who were injured or killed in PVH incidents have parents and caregivers who are thoughtful guardians. No one sets out to “forget” their child in a car. Since younger children sit rearfacing in safety seats, sometimes their presence is obscured. Those who are rushing around or parents with miscommunication may not realize their child is in the car seat. It is essential that parents and caregivers get in the habit of always checking the back seat before locking the car doors. Heeding some additional tips also can prevent PVH.
• Leave your purse, wallet or another item in the back seat so you are forced to go in the back to retrieve it. This is an added security measure to
check the back seat and ensure the car seat is empty.
• Never leave a child in a vehicle unattended for any length of time, even if you only intend to run into a store for a few minutes. Rolling down the windows or parking the car in the shade does little to adjust the interior temperature of the vehicle.
• Write a note or place a stuffed animal in the passenger’s seat to remind you that a child is in the back seat.
• Keep the car locked and keys out of reach. Children being forgotten in the car is not the only cause of PVH incidences. Sometimes kids hide or play in cars and become trapped. The NHTSA says 25 per cent of PVH deaths occur after kids gain access to unattended vehicles.
• Be an observant bystander at all times. If you see a child alone in a vehicle, make sure the child is alright and responsive, then attempt to locate the parents. If the child seems in distress, attempt to break the window of the car and call for emergency services immediately. Instances of PVH and similar accidents are not exclusive to summertime. A car can become hot quickly even if the temperature outdoors seems relatively mild, says Consumer Reports.
Various strategies can help prevent hot car injuries and deaths in children.

record breakers BABY JOGGER
WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM
Every day, parents push strollers through parks, sidewalks, and grocery store aisles – sometimes in a leisurely stroll and other times as road warriors in a desperate sprint to catch a bus or calm a fussy baby. Strollers jostling everything from diaper bags, stuffed animals, a morning coffee, and yes, a baby in tow, it’s a quiet, universal act of love and endurance. But one father, Brendan Neely of Toronto, took stroller-pushing to the next level, turning an everyday parenting task into a record-breaking feat. On May 1st, Neely set a Guinness World Record (male) for the fastest time running 1km while pushing a single baby stroller with his 17-month-old son Jack safely buckled in. His record-beating time of 2 minutes and 51 seconds was 28 seconds faster than the previous record of 3 minutes and 19 seconds.
An unusual feat, but for Neely, staying in peak physical condition is his day job. “As a firefighter and a competitive obstacle course racer, maintaining top fitness is essential,
so running and training are both an extension of my work and a passion of mine,” he explains. That’s why when Neely approached Baby Jogger (Babyjogger.ca) about his Guinness World Record proposal –Adham Elshennawy, Senior Marketing Manager, Baby Jogger (Newell Brands), jumped on board. After all, having the right equipment would be key to breaking the record. Without a doubt – as any parent can attest – no two strollers are the
same. So, for those juggling both a workout and a stroll with their child, the Baby Jogger Summit X3 could be just what you need. Now, perhaps setting a Guinness World Record (GWR) isn’t your goal. Still, if you need a high-performance stroller with allwheel suspension and a front-wheel swivel lock that provides a smooth ride for your precious cargo over any terrain, then the Baby Jogger Summit X3 is ready for the challenge.
But running while pushing a stroller under GWR rules requires some adjustments, especially since the runner must have continuous contact with the stroller without using it to support his weight.
“That’s one of the challenges I faced,” says Neely, “adjusting to running without being able to swing both arms, which is a natural movement and propellant when running. That’s why I trained for this world record for months using two different Baby Jogger strollers: the Baby Jogger Summit X3 and the Baby Jogger City Prix cross bike
trailer, which I attached to my bike and helped with my endurance crosstraining.”
The second challenge was accounting for the curves on a running track. “When I’m running on the street or even a trail, it’s a lot of straightaways, but with the track, it’s all curves, so you must train yourself to push and steer simultaneously. By the end, I forgot I was even pushing a stroller, except when I could feel Jack’s feet kicking because he was so happy to go so fast.”
So, what are you waiting for?
Parenthood doesn’t mean giving up on adventures–bring your kids along for the ride.
“I hope that my boys, 17-month-old Jack and 3-year-old Finn, who were my co-pilots and trained alongside me, learn to dream big, as big as a GWR – if that’s what they want to achieve. I also want them to understand that dreams require determination, practice and resilience and that hard work is essential. And their family will support them every step of the way.”

family fun SUNSHINE AND WATER BECKONS IN PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY
Summer in Prince Edward County is meant for swimming and sunning on one of several Lake Ontario beaches. There are many options to choose from. Here are some of the best.
Sandbanks Provincial Park
Sandbanks Provincial Park is undoubtedly the main event in Prince Edward County, home to what is the best beach on either side of Lake Ontario. Stretching for kilometers, the wide sandy beaches are perfect for relaxing and playing after a dip in the diamond-clear, shallow water. The setting is always in fine shape – super clean, safe, and carefully managed. And it’s eye-wateringly beautiful, with gorgeous views out across the lake on one side and spectacular high dunes (unique in the province) on the other. The only drawback is that Sandbanks rivals the notoriously busy Wasaga Beach for crowds, especially on summer weekend.
North Beach Provincial Park
Much smaller and less popular than Sandbanks to the south, North Beach is something of a hidden
WORDS BY ANDREW HIND
gem. North Beach actually boasts two distinctive ribbons of golden, sun-kissed sand along a finger that juts out into Lake Ontario. There are 1,200 metres of beach facing Lake Ontario, where the water gradually drops off while you gaze out onto a horizon where sky meets lake. Saying it’s picturesque doesn’t do the scene justice. Note, however, that there can be an undertow on Lake Ontario during windy days. Another 800 metres of sand is found on the sheltered
waters of North Bay. No worry about undertow here, but the water drops off steeply.
Wellington Rotary Public Beach [1 Beach Street, Wellington]
Wellington Beach offers a unique experience. This sandy strop is located just a quick stroll from the downtown core of charming Wellington, allowing you to explore the charming village for a few hours before heading to the beach for a picnic and dip in
the water. The beach is smaller than the others mentioned and with fewer facilities (limited to washrooms and picnic tables), but is secluded, rarely crowded and the water drops off slowly. Make sure to take a few moments to view and pose for a selfie or two by the lighthouse.
Presqu’ile Provincial Park
Summer at Presqu’ile Provincial Park is meant for swimming and sunning on one of Lake Ontario’s longest and most picturesque beaches. But if you’re the kind who wants a destination that offers more than sunning and swimming, this should be your choice. Explore Owen Point, a gravel sand spit that sticks out into Lake Ontario and offers splendid views. Enjoy a picnic in the calf pasture, which is generally quiet and therefore a nice escape from the crowds. Don’t forget to set aside a few minutes to visit the Presqu’ile Lighthouse. Built in 1840, it’s the second oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the north shore of Lake Ontario.

CELEBRATING THE 2025 RIPPLE FOUNDATION WINNERS: A NEW GENERATION OF YOUNG AUTHORS
In a year marked by record participation and remarkable talent, the Ripple Foundation’s 2025 Kids Write 4 Kids (KW4K) contest has proudly named two outstanding winners: Firdaus El-Darymli, a Grade 8 student from Ottawa, Ontario, and Isabel Roscoe, a Grade 8 student from Edmonton, Alberta. Their imaginative works – The Legend of the Paper Cranes and Memoirs of a Tree Lord, respectively – will now be published both in print and digital formats, joining a celebrated tradition of young Canadian authors who have launched their literary journeys through KW4K. Chosen from a pool of 648 submissions from 354 schools across nine provinces and one territory, the 2025 contest was one of the most competitive to date. A seasoned panel of judges, including professional authors,
editors, publishers, and past winners, narrowed the field to ten exceptional finalists. Each entry was assessed based on creativity, originality, story structure, and writing quality – criteria that Firdaus and Isabel met with impressive mastery.
Beyond the personal achievement of being published, both winners have chosen to make a meaningful impact by donating 100% of their book sale proceeds to First Book Canada, a nonprofit dedicated to removing barriers to equitable education for children in lowincome communities. This choice underscores the broader ethos behind the KW4K initiative: fostering not only literary talent but also compassion, civic awareness, and social responsibility.
The winning books will be available for purchase on major
platforms such as Amazon, Google Play, Apple iBooks, and Overdrive. All links and updates can be accessed through the program’s official website at kidswrite4kids.ripplefoundation. ca/book. In a special collaboration, Ali Brew, a 2025 graduate of the Sheridan College Illustrator Program, has volunteered her artistic talents to create the cover illustrations for the books. Her distinctive visual style promises to enhance the storytelling experience and bring an additional layer of creativity to the works.
Ripple Foundation founder Ivy Wong expressed immense pride in this year’s turnout and talent:
“Each entry we received was a testament to the fantastic imagination and creativity of young writers across Canada. We were delighted with the amount of talent we saw from students this year. Congratulations
to Firdaus and Isabel for winning this year’s contest – this achievement is undoubtedly just the beginning of many more to come!”
Launched in 2012, the Kids Write 4 Kids contest has become a powerful platform for young voices, discovering over 25 published authors and receiving more than 4,944 submissions to date. It remains a vibrant and inspiring space for youth in Grades 4 through 8 to explore storytelling, develop confidence, and share their perspectives with the world. The 2025 winners reaffirm that Canada’s literary future is in capable and imaginative hands. As Firdaus and Isabel take their first steps into the world of publishing, they also lead by example – demonstrating how creativity, generosity, and purpose can come together to make stories that matter.

TO DO WHEN PARENTS ARE POOR
Heated debates with referees and trash-talking players is something one may expect when watching professional sports. But such behaviour is not expected of parents on the sidelines of youth sporting events. However, unruly parents are on display with increasing frequency at various youth sporting events.
According to a 2017 survey by the National Association of Sports Officials, adult behaviour is the reason more than 75 per cent of all high school referees quit. About 80 per cent of new officials stop after two years on the job. This has led to a shortage of officials across the youth sports landscape.
Richard Weissbourd, a psychologist and senior lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, says there may be several reasons behind the uptick in poor parental behaviour at sporting events. The media and social media platforms have normalized demeaning and degrading people with whom one disagrees without
THE MEDIA AND SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS HAVE NORMALIZED DEMEANING AND DEGRADING PEOPLE WITH WHOM ONE DISAGREES WITHOUT FEAR OF RECOURSE
fear of recourse, Weissbourd says. Also, the behaviour could stem from parents wanting to compensate for shortcomings in their own youth sports histories. Others may be motivated by notions that winning is all that matters.
Children are the biggest losers when parents misbehave at youth sporting events. Rather than having fun in sports with teammates, youth experience unnecessary stress and anxiety about the game. Some are too anxious to compete in events for fear of losing. Others are being affected by pressure-induced statements thrown in, such as, “I know you are going to win today.” Some kids are embarrassed by their own mothers and fathers yelling at them to do better or demeaning other players and coaches.
Youth sports leagues are starting to take inventory of unsavory parental behaviour at kids’ sports events. While it’s one thing for parents to be invested in their children’s success, it’s another to allow it to lead to inappropriate or intense behavior that

is far from sportsmanlike. Here’s how it may be possible to change patterns.
Share a new perspective
Oftentimes sports events, particularly at the high school level, are recorded and/or streamed for viewing later. Problematic parents can be called in to view recaps of their behaviour which may be caught on video to see that they may need to tone things down. This could be an embarrassing
Rally for changed policies
Youth sports leagues and schools can be petitioned to implement stricter policies for dealing with parents who are out of control at sporting events. Restriction from attending games could be one avenue, particularly for repeat offenders.

Coaches and officials can remain calm and collected even in the face of aggression directed their way to illustrate to players how to behave. Furthermore, actions like congratulating the winning team and not supporting cheating or making illegal maneuvers during play should be reinforced.
Lend an ear
Sometimes parents act out at games not because of the game itself, but some other stressor that they may have going on in their lives. Mitigating the situation may come down to listening to a problem and providing a healthy outlet for that frustration. Reducing incidents involving outof-control parents at sporting events is becoming a larger priority as issues continue and fewer coaches and officials are inclined to volunteer their time.
