Welcome to the Media & Learning Conference 2025!

We’re thrilled to welcome you to this year’s Media & Learning Conference, taking place on 18–19 June 2025 in the Provinciehuis, in the heart of Leuven, Belgium.

This year’s theme, “Educational media that works,”speaks to our shared mission: making smart, impactful choices about how we use media to enhance teaching and learning in real, measurable ways.

Organised in partnership with KU Leuven’s Learning Lab, the conference is designed to be an inspiring mix of discovery, discussion, and connection. Across these two days, you’ll explore what truly makes educational media effective—whether it’s through immersive technologies, stronger storytelling, better student involvement, or the thoughtful use of AI in media production.

You’ll be part of a vibrant and growing community of educators, researchers, and innovators from across Europe and beyond, all united by a passion for improving learning through media.

Expect lively sessions, fresh perspectives, and the chance to share your experiences while gaining new insights you can take back to your own work. And while the programme is full of stimulating content, we hope you’ll also take time to enjoy Leuven—a city rich in history, culture, and charm.

Whether it’s your first time here or a familiar stop, we know it’ll leave a lasting impression.

A heartfelt thank you to our Exhibitors, the Board of Management, the Advisory Board, the City of Leuven, and of course KU Leuven, whose ongoing partnership helps make this event possible.

Let’s learn from each other, spark new ideas, and build connections that carry us forward—welcome to a conference focused not just on media, but on media that truly works.

To lecture capture or not to lecture capture?

Come and share your views on whether Lecture Capture still has a role to play in higher education institutions.

Moderator: ZacWoolfitt, Inholland University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands

Lecture capture has become such a common practice across so many higher education institutions that many people take it for granted. But should that be the case? Times Higher Education recently reported that the benefits of lecture capture are coming at the cost of broader student and staff wellbeing. Others argue that the availability of lecture capture facilitates non-attendance and fosters a sense of procrastination amongst students. Join us to discuss the pros and cons of lecture capture

ViBes Empowering creativity, identity and digital skills in Primary education

Led by YvonneCrotty, Dublin City University (DCU), Ireland

This discussion explores how vlogging enhances primary education by fostering creativity, identity development, digital skills, and cross-cultural understanding. The ViBes (Vlogging Beyond Classrooms) Erasmus+ project engaged pupils in Norway, Ireland, and Belgium in creating and exchanging personal vlogs linked to curriculum topics. Through this process, students gained confidence, reflected on their identities, and developed digital competencies. In this discussion session, Dublin City University and NTNU present the digital platform and pedagogic framework that supported teachers and pupils in the ViBes project’s implementation. Belgian pupils and their teacher will also share their experiences, demonstrating vlogging’s transformative impact on learning.

Led by RafLehaen, EvertBinnard & AnneliesCalmeyn, KU Leuven, Belgium

When teachers create online components, they often convert their in-person approaches to talking-head videos without considering alternatives or the principles of multimedia learning.

This workshop will disclose KU Leuven Course creation service’s approach to combat the resulting ‘death by talking-head’. We will briefly highlight how crucial analysis and course design are to achieving optimal format selection, then invite participants to use our format selection tool to design an online component. We will discuss the different choices made, and how the tool might be optimized. We’ll share our further plans with it, and provide access to the most recent version available.

Audio XL

For over 40 years AMX has been a world leader in AV Control systems and video distribution. AMX systems are used in classrooms daily to provide intuitive touch screen control and the reliable switching and distribution of video sources, including a broad range of AVoIP solutions.

Trackingmaster is a revolutionary PTZ camera tracking system for the education market. By working with sensors instead of optical tracking, the system excludes interference by external light sources or unexpected persons in the camera frame.

Combining AMX and Trackingmaster together, the positional data form the sensors can be used to add automation to the classroom, whether that’s switching AV sources at specific presenter positions, keeping a whiteboard in frame, or managing the lights.

Key features

• By using lidar sensors instead of traditional optical (AI) PTZ camera tracking, interference caused by variation in light intensity or external light sources can be fully excluded.

• The camera can be placed wherever you like, the tracking cannot be interfered by other inframe sources.

• The positional data from the sensors can be used to add automation to your classroom, whether that’s switching AV sources at specific presenter positions, keeping a whiteboard in frame, or managing the lights.

• By adding AMX AVoIP video distribution, a primary high quality 4K stream for local use, and secondary H26x stream for online use, are available simultaneously. https://www.audioxl.nl/en/trackingmaster.html
