HELLO

Welcome to the October-November issue of Yalla! magazine. The exhibition calendar is brimming with events, making it the busiest time of year for tradeshows in the GCC. From ADIPEC and GESS, to Saudi Agriculture and The Big 5 Qatar, there are plenty of exhibitions to explore, whatever your industry may be.

Amy Chambers shares a synopsis of her latest book, covering the 6 consistent practices (or habits) that happy, successful, powerful people all share.

Katy Holmes highlights the harm that an over-reliance on AI has on customer trust. She sheds light on the new phenomenon of ‘content catfishing’, which sees businesses create a facade of AI-driven marketing without having the substance or capability to support it. And most importantly, how to leverage AI without sacrificing trust and transparency.

Chocolatier, Carole Armitage features as The Founder of 80Noir Ultra. Her multi-award winning, bespoke recipe of 80.3% dark chocolate flavour and health benefits. This is a brand that is changing the way we think about chocolate, with products that promote holistic well-being.

Freddie Pullen interviews Sebastien Bates, whose Warrior Academy teaches 4,000 students globally. He discusses the pivotal impact that martial arts is having in character development there.

Phil Bedford explains why you should start networking before you relocate somewhere new.

And Corina Goetz brings us up to speed with the latest happenings across the Arabian Gulf this October and November. Formula 1 is roaring back to Qatar and Riyadh Season returns.

Enjoy!

The 6 H.A.B.I.T.S. of Powerful People

AMY CHAMBERS

Before starting my business in 2021, I spent 15 years in corporate leadership. I started my leadership journey as a Bank Manager, then led in a variety of Regional Director roles, before finishing my banking career as a Chief Operating Officer. Even before becoming a leader, I was obsessed with leadership. I was desperate to understand exactly what separated truly exceptional leaders from the rest. I wasn’t interested in what they occasionally did to make the difference, but rather, what they repeatedly did. I wanted to build a model for success. That’s because I wanted the ability to replicate success. Building out my own framework leadership success became my life’s work.

I then spent nearly 20 years observing the behaviors of outstanding leaders who touched the lives of everyone they met. I also observed the abysmal ones who created chaos and drama everywhere they went. I also observed everyone in between. After years of research, I narrowed the differentiating behaviors down to just seven and built them into a framework that I call V.I.R.T.U.E.S. My first book, the 7 V.I.R.T.U.E.S. of Exceptional Leaders, launched earlier this year, and became a #1 International bestseller on Amazon. If you’re interested learning more about that book, or buying a copy, you can do so here: www.amymchambers.com

Readers of this book have told me this framework for professional leadership has been invaluable, and they’ve asked me if I have a similar framework for creating success in our personal lives. I do. These questions have been timely because I’ve recently finished compiling my framework for personal success into my second book, which is set to drop before the end of the year.

15

This framework is called the 6 H.A.B.I.T.S. of Powerful People (Becoming a Happy Human Who Has It All), and it includes 6 consistent practices (or habits) that happy, successful, powerful people all share. My research on personal happiness, fulfillment, and success started eight years ago, in a most unusual way. In 2015, I was abruptly dumped in an airport. Most of us have experienced loss, so many can probably relate to the feelings of utter heartbreak I experienced in the months that followed. However, that traumatic breakup ended up being the springboard that catapulted me into a whole new way of thinking, believing, and living. As I had done years prior, with leadership, I became obsessed with discovering what it was that repeatedly (not occasionally) led some

people to be exceptionally happy and successful in all areas of their life, while others consistently struggled.

Over the last eight years, I’ve compiled my observations and research into another framework; the 6 H.A.B.I.T.S. of Powerful People. The book launches in a couple months, but I’d like to share a sneak peek to what you’ll find in this transformational framework that I’m so proud to have written. As I’ve studied intrapersonal power and happiness at a variety of levels, I’ve found that these six habits are the ones that lead to sustainable and lasting success. If you’d like to learn more about the book (or buy a signed copy), you can do so here: www.amymchambers.com

16

Going forward, I’ll refer to Powerful, Successful, Happy People as PSH People.

THE 6 H.A.B.I.T.S. OF POWERFUL PEOPLE

6 H.A.B.I.T.S.

1. HAVE HONEST HUMILITY.

Many of us like feeling competent. We like feeling we have it all figured out. We prefer ease and comfort to struggle and challenge. Modern-day society coaxes us that life should be easy. Many have begun to act entitled or “soft”. We fall into a trap of wanting great results without having to work too hard for them.

PSH people, instead, have honest humility. They don’t expect life to be easy. They expect it to be hard. They embrace struggle and challenge. They have what Carol Dweck calls a “growth mindset”. They don’t shy away from making mistakes or failing. Instead, they view these as learning opportunities for growth. PSH individuals don’t have a need to feel (or be seen as) perfect. Rather, they accept their imperfections and recognize that life isn’t about perfection, but rather, progress.

how things are our responsibility or fault, we’re able to improve things. It’s only when we decide that something is not within our sphere of responsibility or control, that we become powerless over it, and end up waiting for something or someone else to change.

When things go wrong, those who are humble and honest with themselves tend to look inward for solutions, not outward. They’re accountable and take ownership. Instead of casting blame and pointing fingers, they find ways to make the problem or the situation “their fault”. Contrary to popular opinion, this act doesn’t take power away from them, but restores it to them. When we remain focused on

PSH people aren’t overly concerned with their egos, so they have no problem looking for solutions internally, instead of externally. Time isn’t infinite, and each minute we devote towards one thing (or one way of thinking) is a minute we can’t devote towards another. PSH people don’t waste time playing the victim or feeling sorry for themselves, because they know that time is better directed towards things they can control. They use that time thinking about how they can grow and evolve as humans, upskill

18
Life isn’t about perfection, but rather, progress.

themselves, and get stronger. Because of this mindset and approach to life, they’re constantly getting better in every way, and that leads to a considerable amount of happiness and success.

2. ACT.

When it comes to increasing our happiness, success, and personal power, taking action is critical. Many of us talk a big game about how we’d “like” to do X or have Y, but relatively few of us actually get into motion and take action. Sometimes, we fail to act because our end-goal looks too overwhelming and the road to success looks long. So, it’s important we have a great deal of faith when we begin to act, especially when our actions are the first in a long sequence of other actions that will later follow. In my first book, I quoted Martin Luther King Jr. who famously said, “faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

19 THE 6 H.A.B.I.T.S. OF POWERFUL PEOPLE
When things go wrong, those who are humble and honest with themselves tend to look inward for solutions, not outward.

When it comes to making a major shift in our lives, the road to success can be long. We won’t always see continual and visible signs of progress, especially in the beginning. During those early days, it’s imperative we trust the process, practice patience, and focus more on lead measures than lag measures. Lead measures are influenceable and predictable. They’re a measurement of our behaviors and level of effort; not our results. Many of us get too wrapped up (and too quickly), in the number on the scale or the lack of visible change after only a small amount of time. PSH people know how to find joy not

I quoted Martin Luther King Jr. who famously said, “faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” When it comes to making a major shift in our lives, the road to success can be long. We won’t always see continual and visible signs of progress, especially in the beginning.

only in the destination, but also the journey. They learn how to celebrate small wins along the way, which keeps their morale high.

They also plan their time. They know what matters most to them. Through a process of selfreflection, they figure out what their most important priorities are, and they give those things a space to live and breathe on their calendars. They work hard to align their time (and how they spend it), what they say is important. In other words, they don’t just “take action”, they take the right actions.

20

3. BEFRIEND YOUR BRAIN

So, you’ve recognized that creating high levels of ongoing success, happiness, and personal power is going to be hard. You’ve committed to take the right action towards your goals. Now, it’s time to recognize how much your brain will try to sabotage you (even if unintentionally).

Our brains have both a subconscious and conscious component. Essentially, our subconscious minds do two things for us. First, our subconscious mind protects us. Second, it runs old programs. Since our subconscious mind runs the programs we’ve taught it on autopilot, it operates incredibly quickly compared to our conscious mind. Research shows our subconscious minds can operate at a rate that is 500,000 times faster than our conscious minds! When we stop short at a red light, drive somewhere without even thinking about it, or pull away from a hot surface, that’s our subconscious mind at work. It’s where our flight-or-fight response system is hardwired.

While the subconscious mind operates extremely quickly, and that makes it powerful in some ways, it’s far from invincible. One shortcoming of the subconscious mind is it can’t make decisions for us. The way to ensure the subconscious brain isn’t unilaterally running the show is to slow our response times down. In Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl wrote: “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space, is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.” This concept is a major underpinning in my book.

PSH people lengthen the space between stimuli and responses. During that time, they enlist their conscious mind to weigh in on what’s really going on and what the best response might be. People who slow their response time so their conscious mind can have a seat at the table are more powerful than their counterparts. That’s because they are better equipped to ensure their decisions are the right ones. Instead of spending their days simply reacting to what’s going on around them, they intentionally and deliberately choose their responses. My book talks about how to do this well (and why we must).

21 THE 6 H.A.B.I.T.S. OF POWERFUL PEOPLE
While our subconscious mind does a lot to keep us safe, it can also be very dangerous if left unchecked. Because its primary functions are to keep us safe and run old programs, our subconscious mind craves comfort, order, and familiarity.

4. INSPIRE YOURSELF

This habit is a critical one. We’ve talked about how challenging it can be to have humility, act, and override our subconscious minds when necessary. So, it’s easy to see how quickly our motivation can wane. Often, we look for others to motivate us. People regularly tell me that they need others around them to work out or they’re not feeling “inspired” to make major life changes. PSH people approach motivation and inspiration differently. They don’t wait for others and external sources to inspire them. Rather, they inspire themselves, internally.

The more we surround ourselves with negative energy and thoughts, the more we’ll think and feel negatively. The more we surround ourselves with positive energy and thoughts, the more we’ll think and feel positively. What we consume on the internet and television matters. If we never watch, read, or consume uplifting messages of positivity from role models we admire, then we’re not very likely to feel empowered and inspired.

Figuring out that I could inspire myself has been one of the most empowering discoveries of my life. One way to do it is to carefully watch our language and how we talk to (and about) ourselves. When we say things to ourselves like, “Gosh, I’m such an idiot. I can’t believe I messed that up”, we’re not likely to feel very inspired. Choosing to talk to ourselves in supportive, loving, kind ways that serve us is another imperative practice and daily discipline.

22
Inspiring ourselves is a choice. We must choose to do it daily. It’s a practice. PSH people are mindful about what they allow themselves to consume. What we think about grows.

5. TRUST YOURSELF

This habit builds on the pervious one. PSH people aren’t afraid to set boundaries and say “no”. They recognize that every time they say “yes” to one thing, they’re saying “no” to something else, so they’re careful with what (and who) they let into their lives. PSH people are choosy with the company they keep. This habit references the “average of five”, a concept coined in Jack Canfield’s 2005 book, Success Principles. In short, you’re the average of the top five people you associate with. It’s amazing how many negative, unmotivated people don’t notice that their closest friends and family are also negative and unmotivated.

Another key part of trusting ourselves is defining what success is (for ourselves). Society and those around us are quick to tell us what it is. PSH People and those who truly trust themselves draw their own conclusions about success. For some, success is simply trying (even when it seems we’re failing). For others, success is simply doing our best. Sometimes, success is letting go of something or someone and simply walking away. That’s up to each of us to decide, given the situation. When we don’t trust or listen to ourselves, we billow in the wind and are easily swayed by popular opinion. PSH people don’t do this.

PSH people are also open to thinking about their thinking, and rethinking their former beliefs and values when they notice their previously held ones no longer serve them. This was a key concept in Adam Grant’s book, Think Again. People who deeply trust themselves reserve the right to change their minds (and themselves). Because they’re willing to do this regularly, they’re adaptable and malleable, which are key components that lead to success, happiness, and personal power.

23 THE 6 H.A.B.I.T.S. OF POWERFUL PEOPLE
When we don’t trust or listen to ourselves, we billow in the wind and are easily swayed by popular opinion.
People who deeply trust themselves reserve the right to change their minds.

6. STAY SECURE AND STRONG

I wish everyone pursuing greatness was surrounded by endlessly supportive fans and cheerleaders. Sadly, that’s not the case. If you have big dreams and lofty goals, others may not always rush to offer you encouragement. There’s a multitude of reasons for this. First, others may be intimidated or envious of your success. Or, others might be burdened by their own subconscious minds, and are genuinely trying to keep you safe and out of harm’s way. These people might encourage you to hold back on yourself or your dreams because they’re afraid of what could happen. This habit is all about staying strong, committed, and true to yourself, even in the face of opposition, resentment, or pushback. Changing the status quo (even if it’s just yourself you’re changing) isn’t always easy.

To do this effectively, it’s important we recognize that everything in life is a choice. While we often can’t control what happens to us, we can always control our response. Much of our suffering in life is a choice. Most of the mental and emotional pain we feel is a choice. When we feel angry or afraid, we’re also making a choice. PSH people choose to stay secure and strong as they make these choices. As Michelle Obama said, “You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage. Instead, it’s important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.”

It might be tempting to assume our favorite sports heroes and celebrities had it easy. We often conclude life was somehow simpler for them. This is often not the case. My book makes mention of the numerous troubles that some of our favorite idols like Tony Robbins, Oprah, and David Goggins overcame. Recognizing that you, too, can overcome great adversity and struggle (no matter what) is the hallmark of these habits.

24
Changing the status quo (even if it’s just yourself you’re changing) isn’t always easy.

It’s important to note that PSH people don’t just practice one or two of these habits. The PSH People I’ve studied practice them all. I put these habits together intentionally. As a set, these habits are a surefire way to radically transform your mindset, and thus, your entire life. The beautiful thing about them is how they can be practiced by anyone, anywhere, and at any time.

They work for children, adolescents, and adults. They work for people in any type of profession. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor. It doesn’t matter if you’re attached or single. I promise that employing these six habits is an immediate way to improve your life. I wish you the best as you go on your way.

THE 6 H.A.B.I.T.S. OF POWERFUL PEOPLE

Content Catfishing Why AI Adoption Makes Human Interaction More Necessary (Not Less)

In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, businesses are constantly seeking innovative ways to stay ahead of the competition. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into business operations has been truly revolutionary.

It has transformed the way businesses operate, optimising processes and boosting productivity - with an average 14% boost in issues resolved per hour, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research.

AI-powered algorithms can analyse vast amounts of data, predict trends, and streamline decisionmaking, leading to more efficient outcomes.

Even simple task-related questions are now being answered by AI chatbots like ChatGPT, which are gradually replacing search platforms like Google.

26
27

AI chatbots and virtual assistants have become commonplace, offering instant and personalised customer support, which has greatly enhanced user experiences in most cases.

AI has proven its value by automating mundane tasks and creating engaging written introductions, demonstrating its time-saving potential.

However, in the quest for efficiency and automation, some businesses have fallen into the trap of “content catfishing” - leveraging AI-generated content to create remarkable online first impressions, fully aware that reality may fall short of expectations in person.

Akin to online dating – the only way we can really know and trust the level of expertise of our stakeholders, partners, and colleagues is through meeting in person - through first-hand practical experience.

Having thought long and hard about the impact of AI on copywriting, this doubt and lack of trust has even filtered into my personal life – as I found myself questioning the authenticity of my 12 year old daughter’s school poetry!

28
In the quest for efficiency and automation, some businesses have fallen into the trap of content -catfishing.

Listening to my daughter read her poem to me, an initial feeling of pride was quickly overshadowed by doubt. Suspicion crept in and I doubted its originality! I quickly demonstrated ChatGPT to her, and it was clear that she did not know how to curate content with AI – which she does now. Shame on me!

I strongly believe that while AI has many benefits, businesses must exercise caution and ethical responsibility when using this technology.

This can be especially damaging in Dubai, where the relatively small market size puts extra emphasis on your reputation.

Rebuilding trust with clients after a negative experience can be incredibly challenging. And the effects can be far-reaching. Not only can it ruin the offending brand’s reputation, but the misuse of AI can negatively impact other service providers as well.

Instead of relying solely on AI-generated content, businesses should identify use cases where AI can complement human efforts. For example, AI can automate routine tasks, freeing up employees to concentrate on more complex and creative work.

While AI can aid in personalisation, genuine connections with customers often require human interactions. Train employees to provide personalised services, to actively listen to customers, and empathise with their needs.

Disappointed customers realise that the company they had hoped to work with, was little more than an AI-fueled mirage. Customers can feel misled or deceived.

29
Companies that use AI to write compelling introductions, to lure customers in with captivating promises and perfectly written, personalised communications, need to be very careful.
CONTENT CATFISHING

Businesses should always maintain the quality of customer experience. Utilise AI to enhance customer support and service, but ensure that human intervention is readily available when required.

Be upfront about the use of AIgenerated content in customer interactions. Customers appreciate transparency, and honest communication builds trust.

The UAE being such a melting pot of culture, language, and diversity, I do recognise the potential ChatGPT has, especially for smaller companies that wish to appear proficient in their business communications.

First impressions are so important and that initial email has powerful implications.

I can share a recent example of a BBG stakeholder who is undoubtedly good at what they do. But, by their own admission, their written English is weaker than their competitors.

We have a long-standing working relationship and I was impressed when I received a press release to announce a recent development. My first thought was that they had hired a PR agency, because of the quality of the content and the way it was structured.

30

I was corrected (with absolute honesty) by this person, who shared that they had used AI to write the press release –specifically ChatGPT!

As we already had a long-term business relationship, I was positive in my response. But had this been at the start of the business relationship, would I then have trust issues around their overall competencies? Probably, yes!

In the pursuit of growth, companies must remember to maintain a balance between human and technical resources. Only by incorporating AI into business strategies, while preserving genuine human connections, can companies achieve sustainable growth and build strong, lasting relationships with their customers.

I personally could live without self-checkout kiosks!

And instead of hiding our use of this time-saving tool, why not embrace it transparently? That would go some way to preserving and fostering trust. In that spirit of ‘transparency in communication’, this article was first drafted using ChatGPT, in collaboration with a BBG Member PR firm.

We based this article on the term I was using regularly myself: ‘content catfishing’. I then reviewed and personalised it myself! Did it save me time? A little. Did I feel entirely comfortable through the process? Not really! The end result is still 85% me.

The FOUNDER

CAROLE ARMITAGE OF 80 NOIR ULTRA

Carole is a renowned chocolatier with 35 years of experience. Her multi-award winning, bespoke recipe of 80.3% dark chocolate offers a rich flavour profile without the usual bitterness. 80Noir Ultra is palm oil free, gluten free, and keto friendly, catering to various dietary preferences. In addition to its amazing flavour, this chocolate also provides wellness benefits, helping to reduce anxiety and boost energy.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START 80Noir Ultra?

From the age of 8, chocolate has always been my go-to tonic. I was diagnosed with low blood sugar levels and low blood pressure. This means when I am overwhelmed or stressed, I tend to collapse and faint. I was told hot chocolate was the best way to help manage this, due to the sugar content. As such I have always seen chocolate as my medicine, an elixir to my health and wellbeing.

After starting with hot chocolate, I quickly realised that I didn’t like the high sugar content or the grainy texture of milk chocolate powdered drink. It didn’t make me feel good within myself, so I started making my drink with dark chocolate. It was better, but I

always wanted a more flavourful option. This led me to search for a great hot chocolate, which in turn led me to travel the world in search of the perfect cup. Through this journey, I learned so much more about how different cultures and environments affect chocolate, while also refining my taste buds.

Ultimately, this search led me to create my own dark chocolate. Having spent 35 years refining my taste buds, I knew I wanted something low in sugar, high in nutritional benefits, without any bitterness, and made in perfect daily doses so that it could become a positive part of our daily lifestyle.

33

WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT YOUR BRAND AND PRODUCT RANGE?

Our chocolate is an 80.3% dark chocolate without the bitterness, so it bridges the gap between milk chocolate and dark chocolate.

We have made it in daily doses, so it contains 90% less sugar than any hot chocolate on the market and only 20% of your daily recommended amount of chocolate. Additionally, it is naturally packed with nutritional benefits for the mind and body. All our products are gluten-free, palm oil-free, and veganfriendly.

Our chocolate is designed to revolutionise the way we look at our mental and physical well-being.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST PRODUCT YOU DEVELOPED?

The first product created was the dark chocolate recipe itself, allowing me to set the scene for how I wanted the product and brand to stand out as the new luxurious and nutritious dark chocolate drink/bar on the market.

35 THE FOUNDER

WHAT DOES THE CURRENT PRODUCT RANGE LOOK LIKE?

This Autumn, we have some exciting changes. We are introducing our irresistibly rich and decadent Dark Chocolate Collection, where you can treat yourself to a luxurious indulgence that not only tastes divine but also boasts numerous health benefits. Our focus this season is on creating beautiful gift sets to give everyone the opportunity to embrace the truly divine greatness of dark chocolate, whether that’s for themselves or gifting to loved ones.

We will also expand this further into our other product offerings, which include our porridge mixes, spice bundles, and training bars, all of which promote wellbeing and provide mind-body benefits.

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED?

One of the biggest challenges is funding, raising capital to grow the business and marketing. These two aspects are interconnected for a product-based business. Another challenge is re-imagining the perception of chocolate and demonstrating how dark chocolate can improve our mental and physical wellbeing and fitness performance. So many people are preconditioned to believe that chocolate is a guilty treat and an indulgence, and there is such a sliding scale of quality in chocolate. It is hard to change people’s minds.

HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THOSE ROADBLOCKS AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THEM?

I think with each challenge, the biggest learning curve is to not to take it all personally, it can be very easy to lose it all when things don’t go your way, so taking a step back and realising this is not personal is a great way to keep moving forward.

Another is being able to break down the challenges into bite size manageable pieces, in terms of changing the perception of chocolate, dealing with everything one thing at a time, re-educating the facts, showing the research, and proof that backs it up, and patiently trusting that with time and consistently, people will change, and they do.

When it comes to investment, that is a continuous challenge that is still ongoing. Looking at innovative ways to network and change the chocolate landscape is crucial to make it a lucrative proposition. I always look to the positive and learn from every knock back so that I can adapt and change tactic.

Regarding investment, it remains an ongoing challenge. Exploring innovative ways to network and change the chocolate landscape is crucial to make it a lucrative proposition. I always look for the positives and learn from every setback, so that I can to adapt and change tactics when needed.

36

YOU SOFT-LAUNCHED IN JANUARY 2019 AND WENT FULL-TIME IN OCTOBER 2020... IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK AND DETERMINATION TO SUSTAIN A START-UP. HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED AND FOCUSED?

I try to look after myself as best as possible. The first thing I always do is start my mornings with a dark chocolate shot. I sometimes add in some of my spices to mix it up, but then I spend 5 minutes reflecting on the day ahead. Occasionally, I will do 20-30 minutes of exercise. I always strive to look at the positive and take time out when I feel overwhelmed. It doesn’t always work, but I think it’s important to recognise the symptoms and try my best to take one step at a time and reach out to people to connect and ask for help.

CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF YOUR SUCCESSES SO FAR? 3-4 YEARS IN, HOW HAS THE BUSINESS EVOLVED OVER THAT TIME?

I think the biggest successes are the support and community that has come from building the brand and seeing the brand grow.

We have also been fortunate to work with the likes of Virgin Atlantic, Strava, British Red Cross and the Samaritans, and our ambassadors are a collection of athletes who are Team GB, Olympians and exfootballers.

We have also been featured in Forbes for the No. 2 healthy vegan drink and snack of 2021, as well as winning multiple Great Taste Awards for many years. And most recently, we were featured in Bloomberg discussing the benefits of our dark chocolate.

We have also collaborated with so many great small businesses to combine our resources and support each other’s growth, so there are many possibilities on the horizon.

37
THE FOUNDER

WHAT ASPECTS OF THE JOB DO YOU ENJOY MOST?

I love being the creative visualiser. I love creating new recipes, new flavour profiles. I have always had a creative streak and it’s how I brought the company into fruition. I can see where the company wants to go and how it wants to grow and take the world by storm. There are so many avenues I can see the business growing into, and its exciting to know the possibilities that are available.

YOU ATTENDED GULFOOD EXHIBITION LAST YEAR. WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS FOR YOU?

Yes, I attended the exhibition. It was a fabulous eye-opener to what is possible in the UAE area and meeting so many amazing collaborators and new businesses. I think the biggest takeaway is that there is real potential to move the business into the global markets, especially the GCC, due to its rapid growth in the chocolate market.

COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE INTERNATIONAL MARKETS WHERE 80NOIR PRODUCTS ARE SOLD AND HOW IT HAS BEEN RECEIVED GLOBALLY?

We recently took 80Noir Ultra to Australia and are seeing how that plays out with the winter cycle, so we can potentially have all year-round sales. It’s been slow progress to get into different markets due to the different legislations. However, we are looking at what comes next and how we can position ourselves effectively to maximise our exposure in the UAE.

I know this seems alien since we are a British

38

company, you might assume Europe would be easier. However, with Brexit, its added a new layer of difficulty that we don’t have when looking for international exposure.

WHAT COMES NEXT, IN TERMS OF EXPANSION/ DEVELOPMENT?

We are in talks with a very prestigious company in Asia to distribute over there and in addition, we are looking at how we can enter the GCC market. I believe our chocolate would complement the market out there very well.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER ENTREPRENEURS STARTING OUT IN THEIR JOURNEY OR CONSIDERING A SIMILAR VENTURE?

If you have passion and drive, go for it. There is never a good time to start, and providing you can take the knocks and falls in your stride, you will see progress. The only other thing I would say is, ask for help. There are so many people out there with skillsets that can help you. All you need to do is ask and most people will try to help. And never be scared of not knowing everything, as that’s where you learn the most.

Demand for chocolate in GCC markets has been growing rapidly, at around 12% CAGR. And that’s why when I was speaking to the Trade Commissioner at the Gulfood show, I mentioned how interested I was in looking for ways to move our chocolate into this market. I think there is certainly potential for 80Noir Ultra to be seen and promoted in the Arabian Gulf.

Building character at the Warrior Academy: The high-performance zone

Sebastian Bates suffered a serious base jumping accident in the Swiss mountains, which rendered him unable to walk properly for over a year. Today, his Warrior Academy teaches around 4,000 students every week. In conversation with Freddie Pullen, he delves into the profound influence that martial arts has on character development.

40
SEBASTIAN BATES INTERVIEW WITH FREDDIE PULLEN
41

In the heart of Dubai, a city known for its dynamic growth and multicultural landscape, the name Sebastian Bates has become synonymous with Character Development. As the founder of the Warrior Academy, an organisation that combines martial arts with character development, Sebastian’s journey from a passionate martial artist to a renowned business owner, extreme sports athlete, bestselling author, and philanthropist is nothing short of inspiring.

Sebastian’s story began in 2010 when he began his mission that would change countless lives – he started the Warrior Academy. This venture was rooted in his deep-seated passion for martial arts, a passion that had been nurtured during his travels through Asia, where he trained in Thai boxing clubs. Upon returning to the UK, he decided to take a new path and enrolled in a personal trainer course in Bath, UK

His career as a personal trainer began in a humble setting – teaching Thai boxing in a rundown gym in the city. Most of his students were adolescents and young adults from underprivileged backgrounds, facing a myriad of challenges, including difficult family situations, substance abuse, and domestic violence. For these individuals, the Thai boxing club Sebastian ran became more than just a physical outlet; it became a refuge from the harsh realities they faced.

Within just one year of training under Sebastian’s guidance, these young men underwent a remarkable transformation. Their initial boisterous behaviour gave way to discipline and respect. They started bowing upon entering the gym, shaking hands with each other, and addressing each other with a respectful “sir.” It was a metamorphosis that took Sebastian by surprise.

42

What he initially perceived as a venture into martial arts coaching soon revealed itself as a journey in character development, using martial arts as the vehicle for this transformative process. This insight inspired Sebastian to consider the long-term impact he could have on character development from a young age. He envisioned planting the seeds of a black belt character early in life, understanding the potential for these seeds to compound over time.

With this vision in mind, Sebastian expanded his efforts to work with younger students, starting with a small kids’ club in a Somerset village school. In a school with a hundred students, twenty signed up for his class – the beginning of a journey that would eventually span continents.

The Warrior Academy’s influence reached international shores when it expanded to Dubai, where it currently stands as the largest martial arts academy in the UAE. With six offices in Dubai and three in Abu Dhabi, the Academy touches the lives of around 4,000 students every single week across three continents. What’s even more remarkable is that half of these students are on scholarships, providing opportunities for personal growth to those in developing countries.

Sebastian’s Warrior Academy is more than just a martial arts school; it’s a beacon of hope, character development, and empowerment. His journey from a martial arts enthusiast to a thought leader in character development through martial arts serves as a testament to the transformative power of passion and dedication. In a world that often presents formidable challenges, Sebastian is a shining example of how one person’s vision and commitment can make a difference in the lives of many, planting the seeds of character and resilience that will bear fruit for generations to come.

One pivotal moment in the Warrior Academy’s journey was the “Not A Retreat” staff event held at the beginning of 2022. This retreat, rebranded to emphasise its true purpose, brought together the Academy’s global team from the UK and UAE. Over three inspiring days, they delved deep into the Academy’s core values: “Team First,” “Think Big,” and “Take Risks.” This event marked a turning point, aligning the entire team with a shared vision and strategy for the year ahead.

For Sebastian, this alignment marked a significant step in the Warrior Academy’s evolution. It highlighted the importance of a shared vision and the power of a united team, setting the stage for a year of cultural transformation, strategic growth, and structural enhancements within the organisation.

43 THE HEALTHY ENTREPRENEUR INTERVIEW WITH SEBASTIAN BATES

What sets Sebastian apart is his ability to translate the principles he developed at the Warrior Academy into broader contexts. He introduced the concept of the “three C’s” – Confidence, Conduct, and Concentration – as the fundamental areas of character development. These principles, originally designed to help children in Dubai and the UK, have found resonance in various other settings.

Sebastian’s big vision goes beyond the boundaries of character development. He emphasises the importance of defining a clear purpose and method in business and personal development. By articulating the pain points of clients and offering a structured solution, he believes individuals can cut through the noise and distractions that often hinder progress.

44

In the realm of character development, Sebastian recognised a common challenge: the ambiguity surrounding what character development truly entails. It’s often viewed as a vague concept, encompassing soft skills such as confidence and resilience. To address this, Sebastian’s approach is to simplify character development, making it actionable and measurable. Through assessments and scoring, parents are given a clear picture of their child’s character growth, removing confusion and paving the way for a predictable path to development.

Sebastian’s insights extend to the realm of resilience, an essential trait in both personal and entrepreneurial success. He understands that courage is cultivated through regularly pushing oneself into the “high performance zone,” a space that feels uncomfortable but is within one’s abilities. This practice not only builds courage but also fosters self-respect and confidence.

Furthermore, Sebastian’s dedication to discipline is evident in his own life. He knows that discipline isn’t just about motivation; it’s about consistently implementing changes. It’s about not tolerating the negotiation that often happens within us when we face difficult choices. Instead, it’s about setting clear standards and respecting oneself enough to uphold them.

Relocating to Dubai? Why networking before you move makes sense

Are you planning to make your mark in the bustling metropolis of Dubai? Before you start dreaming of palm trees and luxury cars, let’s talk about building your network, both professionally and socially, even before you set foot in this dynamic city.

They say, “Build the roof before it rains,” and it couldn’t be truer in the world of business and expat life. One invaluable way to lay a strong foundation in Dubai is by joining a networking group, even before you make your big move. Allow me, to guide you through the incredible advantages of taking this strategic step.

WHY JOIN A NETWORKING GROUP BEFORE ARRIVING IN DUBAI?

Dubai is a city of opportunity, but it can also be a maze if you don’t know your way around. Joining a networking group can be your compass, map, and tour guide, all rolled into one.

My own networking group, Strategic Business Connect schedules Zoom networking opportunities up to five times week. That allows people to begin networking from their home country. Then when people arrive, we have physical face-to-face sessions to make those all-important human connections.

HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD NETWORK IN ADVANCE

1. Get Ahead of the Game

When you join a networking group in advance, you’re effectively hitting the ground running. You’ll be miles ahead of those who arrive without a clue, helping you secure those golden opportunities that Dubai is famous for.

2. Find Suppliers and Partners

Need a reliable supplier for your business? Want to partner with a local expert? Networking groups are treasure troves of connections. By getting to know potential suppliers and partners before you arrive, you can ensure a smooth transition for your business.

3. Tap into Local Expertise

Dubai’s business landscape can be complex, especially for newcomers. A good networking group offers access to experienced professionals who can provide invaluable insights and guidance. Think of it as a cheat code for success in Dubai’s competitive market.

4. Navigate Lifestyle Challenges

Moving to a new city, let alone a new country, can be a daunting experience. Networking groups aren’t just about business; they’re about building a support system. You can seek advice on schools, housing, healthcare, and more, making your life transition smoother than a luxury car gliding down Sheikh Zayed Road.

47

5. Make Friends and Socialize

Life in Dubai is about more than just work; it’s about building a vibrant, diverse social life too. Joining a networking group before your move can help you make friends and establish connections in advance. When you finally arrive, you won’t just have a business network; you’ll have a social one too.

6. Your Competition is probably already here

Let’s face it very few businesses have no competition. Dubai is a networking city and the chances that someone has been here longer, has more influence and has more advertising spend are high.

You probably don’t have 20 years to build your network so why not plug into a network where many of the people have been here between 15 to 30 years. This will fast track anyone’s access to the market.

THE TAKEAWAY

In a city as fast-paced and exciting as Dubai, it pays to be prepared. Joining a networking group long before you make the leap to Dubai is like having a parachute in case of a sudden business freefall, or a safety net for those inevitable lifestyle challenges.

There are many different networking groups out there and while we are proud of what we have developed, we encourage you to find a network that serves the purpose for you.

We always advise our clients to be in more than one network. Three is ideal because there will be varied spheres of influence and they may serve a different purpose. Which ever networks you are in, make sure you work them and contribute. Networking is about helping so that you in turn receive.

So, as you prepare to embark on your Dubai journey, remember the wise words, “Build the roof before it rains. ” Join a networking group or two (or three...), and you’ll not only have a roof but a whole community waiting to welcome you to the land of endless possibilities. Dubai is your oyster; now go crack it open.

What We’re Working On An intro to Arabic localisation

Designing Arabic langauge collateral is a big part of what we do at mecs - and has been since 1997. We believe that localisation is crucial when it comes to communicating with audiences in the Arabian Gulf.

With more than 420 million native speakers, Arabic is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It is also an official language for 22 countries, covering a vast geographical area from North Africa to the Middle East.

However, Arabic dialects can vary significantly depending on the region, making it challenging to create material that resonates with all audiences.

This isn’t widely understood in the West. And we’re working on changing that. A lot of research, facts, and figures are going into new promotional material as we prepare to launch GCC localisation services in the UK and Europe.

FRESCO Exhibition Brochure 2023

Fresco Systems are a New Zealand-based company that specialise in bespoke bulk materials handling systems. Due to exhibit at ANUTEC in Mumbai, the regional office in Dubai needed a professional sales brochure in a hurry.

With just 3 weeks to go, mecs and Fresco Systems teamed up to deliver a piece that is informative, professional, and on-brand.

This is a detail-oriented A4 brochure that is all about the Fresco USP - tailored, custom-built automation. Fresco collaborates with clients to design, manufacture and integrate customised process solutions. They put the best technology, ideas, and expertise at their client’s disposal.

57 OUR WORK
Designed by our graphics studio in SW England, printed under our supervision in Dubai, and flown to Mumbai with Fresco. All in a matter of weeks.

Some things have to be seen to be believed. Our HD printing is one of them

At a printing press, quality comes down to the people running the press. The latest machinery and equipment are useless in the wrong hands. A print company is only as good as it’s people. This applies to just about any industry. Perhaps your’s too. Human ability still determines the final result.

At mecs, we call ourselves a graphic design and print management agency. Because printing has always been part of our DNA. Our founders include a British Master Printer, trained at City & Guilds, London. We bring you more than 45 years of industry-experience and an obsession with quality, detail, and precision that is as strong as ever. globalprinthub.com/dubai

Every job we print is produced at approximately 2x the industry-standard resolution. In plain English, that means twice as much detail. Think of it as High-Definition.

That’s why our print quality has to be seen inperson. And that’s why our work can command the respect of your prospective clients and partners.

Whatever business you’re in, we can help you impress with print that’s out of this world.

59

Opportunity is won or lost

For 25 years mecs has specialised in bilingual English / Arabic design and print. Starting out in Kuwait, our work quickly stood apart, and our services were soon sought by some of the most respected names in Arabian business. Reknowned for clear communication, elegant design, and outstanding production quality; clients turn to us for presentations that matter. We have worked across countless industries, with clients spanning the entire Arabian Gulf, the U.S., UK, and Europe.

Today we have a design studio located in Devon, South West England, while our customer base remains based in the GCC.
