Eight Universal Truths I Discovered the Hard Way Amy Chambers

In 2015, I got dumped- at an airport. The breakup was abrupt, and it was painful. It wasn’t the first time I had been dumped, but this time felt particularly traumatic. Perhaps that was due to the nature of the breakup; perhaps it was because I had believed this man was bound to become my husband, but whatever the reason: I was devastated. For months, I did nothing but cry alone in my apartment, and write long emails and letters to my ex, begging for him to take me back.

Something snapped. One day, I woke up and knew that something simply had to change.

So, I decided to make a different decision than I had made with past breakups. Instead of blaming my ex and telling my friends about how it was primarily his fault (as I had done in the past), I made a choice to figure out how, this time, it was my fault. I decided I wanted to learn something from this breakup.

In the year that followed, I sought two mentors to assist me, and read numerous books on the power of mindset, choices, and happiness. For the first time in my life, I made a vision board. Then, I made a vision and mission statement. I determined what my core values were too, and put those on paper as well. Then, I set long-term, mid-range, and shortterm goals for my life. I began to follow all these documents; they became my guide. And as I did, things began to change for me.

Within only a year of creating that first vision statement, I became a marathon runner, after not ever having been able to run even a 5k, met the man of my dreams, and became a Chief Operating Officer.

A year later, I bought my dream home. A year later, I became a skier after having been deathly afraid of it. A year later, I started my own business. And within a year of that, I had published my first book, which became a #1 International bestseller. Within 2 short months, my second book will launch. All of this started with the process of me crafting a personal mission statement and setting some SMART (specific, measurable, actionable, relevant, timely) goals and then pursuing them through daily activities. I can’t say enough about having a written-down vision and mission statement.

As part of that process, I was forced to think deeply about what I truly believed. I searched deep within my soul and realized that some of my top values were integrity, humility, transparency, and curiosity. Around that time, I began developing some key maxims that transformed my life.

Today, life is more than great; it’s extraordinary. Since experiencing this profound transformation, I now realize much of my success boiled down to eight maxims that I adopted and began to follow starting in 2016.

EIGHT UNIVERSAL TRUTHS

Today, my life’s work is all about helping others become successful and experience immense joy and fulfillment, so I want to share these eight maxims with you now.

MAXIM 1: Our power in life comes from focusing on the things we can control; not the things we can’t.

Anytime that we start to complain, whine, or vent about someone or something outside of ourselves (that we can’t control), we start to lose the game.

While some of us have a tendency to look at successful people and think about how lucky they must have been or how their circumstances were better than ours, thoughts like these never help us. It’s been said that only roughly 10% of our success is determined by what happens to us; the remaining 90% is how we respond to what happens to us. Nearly everything that we say, think, and do is a choice. It’s a choice that we get to make. Regardless of what’s happening to us, we always have a choice in how we respond. When we pay less attention to what’s happening to us and focus all our energy on what we can do about it, we find ways to win and succeed. Knowing our thoughts and feelings are all choices (including gratitude, happiness, love, acceptance, appreciation, and even forgiveness) changes nearly everything.

Fear is not real. Fear lives in our minds. It’s a product of our imagination.

MAXIM 2: Fear is not real. Fear lives in our minds.

It’s a product of our imagination. When we feel afraid, it’s often about something that may (or may not) happen. We often fear negative consequences that haven’t even occurred yet. Sadly, this opens us up to self-fulfilling prophecies, which I’ve come to know are a real thing. It’s as Henry Ford was rumored to have said: whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.”

When we’re afraid that something bad will happen to us, we actually make it more likely to happen. The chances of that bad thing occurring become more likely just because we believed it would. When we fear failure, we make failure more likely. When we believe we’ll be successful, we increase our chances of success. My former boss, CEO Joseph Whitaker, once told me that “fear also inhibits action. But, action can overcome fear.” Truer words have never been spoken. When we’re feeling afraid, we’re least likely to act. Fear often does paralyze and cripple us.

However, when we’re afraid, that’s often when we need to act most. Recognize that fear is often part of a story we’re telling ourselves. Fear often comes from our subconscious minds; it’s not always grounded in reality. Any time we catch ourselves telling ourselves

a story that’s based in fear, we always have the opportunity to change the narrative, flip the script, and tell ourselves a different story. Recognizing we have that power, and using it, is a major gamechanger.

MAXIM 3: Mistakes and failure do not run counter to success. They are a part of success. In fact, we often cannot have success without mistakes and failure.

When we get comfortable with making mistakes and failing, we allow ourselves to learn, grow, and evolve. We’re also able to enjoy the process of growth (and the journey of life) so much more. As Winston Churchill said, “success is going from failure to failure, without a loss of enthusiasm or energy.” Churchill was right. We only truly begin to fail when we feel like we’re failing; when we call it failure. Otherwise, we’re still just learning. As Thomas Edison said, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up too soon. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

Mistakes and failure do not run counter to success. They are a part of success.

MAXIM 4: Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The more we’re willing to be uncomfortable, the more that great things can happen for us. And, the way to get more comfortable with discomfort- is to practice being uncomfortable.

Truly successful people don’t shy away from discomfort, but rather, intentionally look for ways to be uncomfortable.

This was a key topic in Carol Dweck’s “Mindset”, which was the result of years of research at Stanford University. In her famous book, Dweck asserted that there’s two types of mindsets: fixed mindsets and growth mindsets. Much of Dweck’s research was conducted with children. Dweck found that those children with a fixed mindset preferred to do puzzles that weren’t a challenge for them, ones where they already knew the answers and could easily solve the problems. Students with a growth mindset, however, eagerly volunteered to do the harder, more complex puzzles- ones that would challenge and stump them. Dweck’s core belief is those of us with growth mindsets excel in life because they’re not afraid to be out of their comfort zone.

EIGHT UNIVERSAL TRUTHS

Growth requires change. Many of us want to grow, but we’re not all willing to experience great change (and the growing pains that come along with change).

MAXIM 5: Don’t look for reasons to be offended.

Many of us actually look for reasons to be offended.

I should note that this isn’t always a conscious act. Highly successful people, however, do the opposite. They look for reasons not to be offended.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but many of us want to feel like we’ve been harmed or wronged. Our ego subconsciously does this for us. We want to feel like we’ve been damaged; that someone owes us. It can be fun to play the victim.

Successful people, on the other hand, work hard to understand others and learn what they don’t know.

When something hurts their feelings or psyche, they don’t make assumptions. Instead, they ask questions and listen in an attempt to learn about the other person (or even themselves). They’re not afraid to take feedback (or even criticism) because they view it as a gift; it’s information to help them become more self-aware (which is always a goal for them). When we’re feeling offended, the most helpful thing we can usually do is recognize it and choose not to be.

We gain so much time and energy back by refusing to take things personally. Don Miguel Ruiz touched on these maxims in his book, the 4 Agreements.

Agreement 2 is “Don’t Take Anything Personally” and Agreement 3 is “Don’t Make Assumptions.”

MAXIM 6: Growth requires change. Many of us want to grow, but we’re not all willing to experience great change (and the growing pains that come along with change). Some of us want the reward, but don’t want to do the work or pay the price for the reward.

If we want things we’ve never had, then we must be willing to do things we’ve never done. If we want to grow, we must be willing to be stretched. Think about the elasticity of a rubber band. When we apply tension and stress to a rubber band, it stretches and grows.

We too must be willing to absorb some tension and stress, if we want to expand. If you refuse to take on some stress and tension, recognize that you’ll likely stay stuck.

MAXIM 7: If you want to be happy, focus on doing

MAXIM 8: Yesterday is heavy. Put it down. Don’t

what you love. Find the things that you are deeply passionate about – and pursue them ardently.

We should never tolerate or stay in any job or relationship that makes us miserable. It’s been said that there are three forms of motivation. The lowest level of motivation is fear- it’s when we do things because we’re afraid of the consequences we’ll incur if we don’t. At a slightly higher level is obligation.

That’s when we do things because we feel we should.

The very highest level of motivation is passion or love. That’s when we do things because we want to.

live in the past. It doesn’t matter if you were wronged or mistreated last month or last year. Focusing on these things (or any part of the past) rarely serves us.

The past is a great example of something that is only within our circle of concern; not our circle of control.

It has nothing to do with what we can accomplish today and who we can (and will) become tomorrow. A former boss of mine, Johnny Montes, once said “The past is interesting, but nothing more.” I have found so much truth in that statement over the years. The past can be instructional, but the most surefire way we can make a difference in own lives or the lives of others is by keeping our focus on today. Staying connected to the present moment allows us to change the world; remaining stuck in “what was” does not.

I encourage my clients to rarely do things out of fear or obligation. Instead, I implore you to determine what lights you up inside, and chase that down. It’s critical we evaluate what truly makes us tick inside.

When we find jobs we love, we never work a day in our lives. The secret to fulfillment in life is aligning our beliefs and our actions. The happiest people I know make sure that what they think and dream about is congruent with what they do; how they spend their time. Recognise the power of setting boundaries and saying “no”. For those of us who were brought up to be people-pleasers, it can be hard to say no, but that’s okay. You can do hard things.

Remember: every time to say yes to one thing, you’re saying no to something else (anyway) even if it’s just yourself and your mental or emotional health. While saying no can be hard, it’s far more important to make sure we’re making time to say yes to the things we truly love.

When I began living life with these eight maxims in mind, my entire world changed. I guarantee that if you start to practice them tomorrow (especially with consistency), you too will notice major changes in your life. I also can’t say enough about writing out a vision, mission, or purpose statement for your life. Living your life with deliberate intention will allow you to experience breakthrough happiness and success.

The Power of Networking The first experience we all had of networking was probably starting school – dressed to impress, going into a room that was unfamiliar to us, with a group of people that we probably hadn’t met before, and having to quickly assess our place in the situation independently, feeling the pressure of needing a positive outcome! It can feel exactly the same for many as they walk into a room of business owners, professionals, and industry experts at a networking event!

In today’s interconnected world, the power of networking cannot be underestimated. Building and nurturing professional connections has become a crucial aspect of our career development and personal growth. Networking allows us to expand our reach, establish meaningful relationships, and open doors of opportunity that may have otherwise remained closed.

There are multiple reasons for engaging in deliberate networking – building your contacts, familiarising yourself with a new sector or location, as a job seeker, or to quench a thirst for knowledge. However, I will start by saying that the most successful networkers I have observed are those who walk into an event and genuinely think, ‘How can I help?’

In Joe Polish’s recently launched Wall Street Bestseller, “What’s in it for Them,” you will find many great examples - and the theory - of the power of mastering relationships with people in business. Joe says, “Be a pain detective to connect with others.

You and your possible solutions come second.”

Strong networkers are also always referring leads to others because that sincerity builds credibility and strengthens your personal brand. Your readiness to recommend others will naturally elevate you to be at the forefront of your contacts’ minds when they hear of leads that could be relevant to you.

POWER OF NETWORKING

Networking groups, such as the British Business Group (BBG), provide a platform for members to exchange ideas, insights, and experiences. Engaging with professionals in similar or complementary fields can lead to acquiring new knowledge and expertise.

A study conducted by McKinsey found that 81% of professionals believe networking is essential for career development. Our events range from closeddoor roundtables and large-scale business briefings to golf days, evening networking, and family days!

We cater to a diverse and dynamic membership that represents over 25 industry sectors.

By attending conferences, seminars, and industry events, you will learn from experts, stay updated with industry trends, and broaden your horizons.

I am often approached on LinkedIn by job seekers who identify that the BBG will likely be a great source of open positions. Perhaps it is because it is widely known that a significant number of job openings are never advertised publicly. Instead, they are filled through networking and word-of-mouth referrals.

There is great significance in building a strong professional network as it provides access to the ‘hidden job market’ and increases the chances of landing sought-after opportunities that may not be made available externally but are known within your wider network. Personally, I only ever applied for and interviewed for my first job; the roles I have held since then were gained through my network, by recommendation, or via a direct connection that I had forged. Your potential job network could be a virtual network, and I would say that specifically in Dubai, there is a heavy reliance on Facebook pages like British Mums Dubai. These pages have had some great success stories, with people looking for work themselves or on behalf of their spouses. When reaching out through a post, there is often a great community response to help, by sharing CVs and open positions.

I would confidently say that networking is vital for entrepreneurs and business professionals.

Connecting with like-minded individuals, industry experts, and potential clients leads to partnerships, collaborations, and new business opportunities. A study conducted by Harvard Business Review found that 78% of startups consider networking crucial for entrepreneurial success. By expanding their network, entrepreneurs can tap into a wealth of knowledge, resources, and potential customers, partners, and suppliers.

Networking also provides a sense of community and support. Connecting with other business owners, managers, department heads, etc., who share similar challenges and goals with you can create a network of support, encouragement, and mentorship – particularly for the ‘solopreneur’. According to a survey conducted by the US value-based career platform, The Muse, 76% of professionals believe that having a mentor is crucial to career success.

Networking enables individuals to find mentors who can guide them, share wisdom, and provide valuable advice along their professional journey.

Expanding their network, entrepreneurs can tap into a wealth of knowledge, resources, and potential customers, partners, and suppliers.

At the BBG, we were cognisant of a lack of interaction and mentoring during the lockdown and now with hybrid working. The younger generation does risk feeling isolated and missing the interaction and proximity to more seasoned professionals to learn from. For example, by overhearing client management practices over the phone in an openplan office. The BBG ‘Speed Mentoring Series’ was an event series that was born out of the pandemic where we hosted 40 members and ‘rising stars’ who sat opposite each other for six minutes at a time with prompt questions such as, ‘What do you wish you invested in at the start of your career?’ ‘What would you have done differently as you launched your business?’ and gave both new-to-career and established business leaders the opportunity to learn from each other in a fast-paced, dynamic setting. It’s still one of our most popular events which has since evolved to ‘Speed Networking’.

As an active and visible platform for British businesses and expats in Dubai, the BBG Board and business team feel a responsibility to support our members and the wider business network. In 2019, then UK Prime Minister Theresa May appointed the first ever Minister for Loneliness. The “Loneliness Epidemic” is a globally recognised issue. Research has shed light on the often overlooked struggles faced by solopreneurs, revealing a pervasive sense of loneliness within the business world. A study conducted by Harvard Business Review found that 50% of solopreneurs reported feeling lonely on a regular basis. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO DUBAI AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START KING & CO PR? I came to Dubai in October 2014, after a series of coincidences. I’d been planning the move over for some time, but had no real connections in the market or a clear understanding of what I really wanted to do, other than to continue my career in communications.

I sent my CV to a recruitment agency, who after seeing my experience working for broadcast agency, markettiers – mentioned it to my old boss, Howard Kosky, who was incidentally over in Dubai at the time, and who the recruitment agency knew well. Little did I know, that Howard at the time was looking to launch a UAE operation of the business. He invited me for breakfast when he was back in London and fast forward a few months, I’d got the job, and was running the first overseas export of markettiers in Dubai!

I absolutely loved my time at markettiers – it was a truly incredible experience and it was fantastic to have the opportunity and trust from the leaders of the business, allowing me to build a solid team and deliver great work. It taught me so many skills, being the first employee in the region – I learnt quickly how to operate a P&L (profit and loss system), networked amongst the community, and built a strong reputation.

After almost 10 years’ at the helm, in 2023 I decided it was time to move on and do something different. It was really a combination of all of the things I’d learnt at markettiers that inspired me to start my own business, King & Co PR – a boutique communications agency that specialises in technology clients. I think I’ve always admired my former boss, Howard, who has an incredible entrepreneurial spirit and who is an amazing leader; and I’ve always been quite driven and very much a work-a-holic, so starting my own business seemed a natural step.

HOW DID YOUR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES PREPARE YOU FOR FOUNDING AND RUNNING A PR FIRM? My previous experiences were fundamental to me founding and running my own PR firm. When we first started markettiers in the UAE, it was very much ‘start-up’ mode, doing a lot of new business and building connections and credentials in the region.

We basically started with a list of businesses to call, and I would do that day in day out until we won some business!

Persistency was key and I had a huge belief in our offering – which as a broadcast agency was very different to the typical PR agencies you think of.

The focus at markettiers was delivering outstanding campaigns focusing on the power of broadcast – radio, TV, and online – and so at the beginning, we were not only launching the business here, we were also creating a market and demand for our services.

I think because we were considered ‘the new kids of the block’ we had to get over a lot of hurdles initially.

This included educating the market about broadcast, about the pioneering services that we offered and how we could help put Dubai on the map globally via broadcast media relations. It wasn’t the easiest start, and it took a good eight months I’d say for us to really get going, but when we did, it was fantastic and we suddenly started getting lots of clients and building our reputation as a strong player in the region.

All of this helped to prepare me for starting King & Co PR. Although our offering here is very different to my former experience, the tools I learnt in terms of persistency, always believing in your product, and staying true to your business model (yet being flexible enough to adapt to market demand), really helped me in the early days of King & Co PR.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE SETS KING & CO PR APART FROM OTHER PR FIRMS IN THE UAE? There are lots of big agencies in the UAE that focus on tech clients, but with King & Co our focus is very much on helping start-ups and tech brands to launch and scale in the region – essentially we take businesses from ‘Zero to 10.’ I wanted to create an agency that was boutique and bespoke in its feel and that specialised specifically in this area – we understand the challenges that start ups face in the

early days, and we are committed to accelerating their growth. I’ve almost 10 years in market, and my team members very much live and breathe the region, so it’s through this model that we have a good knowledge of the market, comms, media and brand – and that’s what we bring to the table. WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? As with launching any business, the first few years are filled with ups and downs. It’s definitely a journey – and I’ve made many mistakes on the way – but importantly, it’s how you learn from them that’s key.

In the early days, as the Founder you wear a lot of different hats – you are the comms lead, the account exec, the finance person, the invoice issuer and the media person all rolled into one. I think I definitely took on too much when I first started and should have really secured my first team member earlier on.

That said, finding the right talent has been instrumental in King & Co PR’s growth, we’re still a small team – we have 5 people in our business – but each and every person is an expert in their field,

and is truly passionate about what they do. I’m incredibly proud of each and every person in our team, and they’ve enabled us to win more clients and importantly do some outstanding work.

WHAT’S YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? My proudest achievement so far, would be being part of the team that led the broadcast efforts for the Pope’s visit to the UAE back in February 2019.

During this time I was the Managing Director of markettiers, and our role was to drive the broadcast coverage for the visit. This was an incredible and an historic campaign to work – I felt very honoured to be leading the team on the broadcast efforts here. We secured some fantastic coverage, and importantly it was 100% positive – portraying the visit and the UAE well to global broadcast media.

CAN YOU SHARE AN EXAMPLE OF A CAMPAIGN THAT DIDN’T GO AS PLANNED AND HOW YOU HANDLED IT? During Expo, I was working for multiple clients on site, securing broadcast coverage and setting up interviews for different business leaders on site.

One campaign that didn’t go as planned was that we had an interview set up with CNN International for one of our clients, but unfortunately they were taken ill very last minute and were unable to attend

the interview. Luckily, as we were working with many other clients there, we were able to pivot and secure a great interview with talabat – we pitched the idea of Richard Quest showing to viewers his ‘down time’ at Expo. They loved the idea and we then delivered a whole segment where Richard went to talabat’s pavilion to make a coffee, which also included a ‘selfie’ of his face in the foam. This was a great outcome as it highlighted the tech facilities at talabat – and the good news is we were also able to re arrange the previous interview!

HOW DO YOU TYPICALLY MEASURE SUCCESS IN A PR CAMPAIGN? We use a combination of audience reach, sentiment and key message delivery.

WHAT ASPECTS OF THE JOB DO YOU ENJOY MOST? ANYTHING YOU REALLY DISLIKE? What I love the most is securing great results.

That’s what drives. I love the feeling of delivering a campaign and seeing the success of this in the coverage. It’s fantastic to see all of the hard work pay off. It’s even more rewarding working with brands that are starting out and looking to scale when you see this type of success. Trophy pieces of coverage can be real game-changers for a business when you’re starting out – it creates talkability and starts to create a profile for the brand in the region. I also love connecting brands to different stakeholders – it could be through securing a great speaking opportunity, or delivering an event that’s well attended by the media, or spotting a news-jacking opportunity that you can jump on. There’s not a lot I don’t enjoy – although admin always gives me a headache!

IS THERE A PARTICULAR AMBITION OR GOAL YOU HAVE FOR THE BUSINESS? WHAT COMES NEXT, IN TERMS OF YOUR GROWTH? Well for 2024, I want to continue delivering great work, winning the right type of business, and continuing the strong relationships we have built with our clients. We have both retained clients and clients that use us for one-off projects, so next year, I want to continue to encourage repeat business and continue to do some great work.

We are getting lots of briefs for Saudi now as well as the UAE – so further strengthening our offering there will be important, as it’s a hotbed for tech. I’m really excited for next year.

Personally, I also want to get more involved with the industry – I’m part of MEPRA, PRCA and Global Women in PR – so I’m keen to network more amongst the community in the region – as we have some fantastic PR professionals here!

FINALLY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING PR PROFESSIONALS OR ENTREPRENEURS LOOKING TO START THEIR OWN FIRM? Do it! It will be the best thing you ever did. Have a solid business plan, passion for what you do, and believe in your offering - and be persistent. It won’t be easy at times, and starting a new business without the ‘safety net’ of a salaried job can be very daunting, but keep going, learn fast, and network – your connections will be key. And don’t forget to enjoy the ride!

Ask for Referrals: Don’t be shy about asking satisfied people for referrals. Many are more than willing to help your business grow if you simply request it.

You can make this process even more seamless by incorporating it into your post-purchase interactions, such as order confirmations or thank-you emails. If you are uncomfortable to ask, then the chances are you haven’t done enough for them yet. Before you ask for referrals make sure you have contributed to them.

Just because they are a client does not mean they will rush out and refer you just because you did a great job. We often need to be more strategic and look away from our clients for referrals to what Asentiv call Referral Sources or Referral Partners.

Incentivise and strategise Referrals: Consider implementing a referral program that rewards both the referrer and the new customer. This can be a winwin situation that encourages more referrals. Offering discounts, exclusive access, or other incentives can be a great way to motivate your existing customers to refer friends and family. Look for referral sources that are not customers. Consider an agreement to help each other get more referrals. In this dynamic there is no exchange of goods or commissions only goodwill, and opens up access to the other seven sources of referral. Customers are only one source of referral.

Show Gratitude: Express your gratitude to customers who provide referrals. A simple thankyou note, a discount, or a small gift can go a long way in strengthening the relationship. It’s not just about rewarding the referrer; it’s about showing appreciation for their support and trust in your business.

Utilise email newsletters, social media, and other communication channels like networking groups to stay connected with your contact base.

Corporate Profile This brochure is typical of the Corporate Profile projects mecs has become reknowned for since we started out in Kuwait in 1997. Our role goes far beyond graphic design, into the creation of original content.

Barari is Arabic for “wilderness”. The company was founded on the ‘greening the desert’ legacy of the founding president of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The company is responsible for managing and safeguarding the majority of the forests in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. This includes around 230,000 hectares of government-established forests, in addition to city gardens and roadside plantations.

Barari is contracted by the Environment Agency to manage approximately 48,000 hectares, with 28,000 to 33,000 hectares of planted forests in the Eastern Region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Another important legacy of the late President Sheikh Zayed is the successful conservation of wildlife. Barari manages thirty-eight sites that house various species of wild animals, including the Arabian Oryx, Arabian Tahr, gazelles, and other species.

On this project, we wanted to make these landscapes the centrepiece of the brochure. We conducted onlocation photography in the deserts of Abu Dhabi, capturing RAW photographs of the Arabic Oryx, gazelles, camels, and birds we encountered. These stunning images took centre stage in a landscape brochure, printed at 300LPI (high-definition offset), and finished with Spot-UV for depth and vibrancy.
