Felician University Launches Institute for Information Sciences

E

arlier this year, Felician University launched its new Institute for Information Sciences on the Rutherford Campus at Ray’s Place.

The Institute will offer cutting-edge curriculum in Computer Science and Cybersecurity. The Institute’s Director, Felician VP for Technology, Design and Innovation, Dr. Robert Clougherty said the Institute will offer students more than computer science as a discipline where they type code saying, “They will learn how to comprehend the whole world that is technologically driven.”

And while the Institute’s students will gain competitive skills, Dr. Clougherty pointed out to those who turned out for the Institute’s launch that, “It’s not going to mean just competitive skills, but lifelong skills, because to us, our value is really developing the whole person.”

President Dr. Anne Prisco said the Institute will give students the opportunity from the very first semester to be “engaged in and understand in real world learning the latest technologies that will equip them to deal with whatever new technologies they will face in the future.”

Dr. Clougherty says the Institute will sponsor monthly seminars designed for professional development that will, “Engage questions on information – how it is created, processed and conveyed.”

The series is called the Ockham Lectures, named after William of Ockam, a 14th Century Franciscan Friar who studied logic. Dr. Clougherty used humor throughout the launch referring to William of Ockam as “Billy” when he presented the first lecture in the series: Summa Cybernetica: Machines, Meaning and Metaphor.

Systems In Change

How businesses can come back stronger from the pandemic

I

t is the paradox of resilience that the very things that make us strong can also prevent us from being nimble during a crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the weaknesses of how we have been doing business. If we look at businesses like nested Russian dolls, one system embedded inside another, we find clues to where change is needed if we are going to come back stronger from this crisis.

The first and smallest system is the employee. The lack of no-deductible healthcare, low minimum wages and long commutes created a vulnerable workforce that didn’t have the minimum savings needed to cover household expenses for two months. It also meant that entire industries were vulnerable to workers becoming sick because they had no paid sick leave.

These are not individual problems. They reflect business practices that have given us cheap food and furnishings – but left us with little resilience when there is a natural disaster or economic crisis (or both).

The next system is the business itself. The most resilient corporations are those that plan for sustainability months before it is needed. They were already considering ways to let workers work from home or had diversified their supply chains to avoid dependency on a single supplier in a single country.

Large international businesses, like Unilever, have been emphasizing sustainability and adaptation as they sell soap and food around the world. According to Alan Jope, Unilever CEO, that drive to protect people, profits and the planet made them quick to respond to the crisis, sending their workers home in mid-March and looking at what they could do globally to prevent the pandemic from getting worse.

Resilient businesses are those that have redundancies built into their production. Much like aircraft that have fail-safe systems layer upon layer, small businesses need to anticipate what could happen during an economic crisis. Distilleries that are producing hand sanitizer or grocery stores that are offering delivery are showing the

resilience that is necessary during a crisis. These practices are possibly new business models that will keep them afloat in the future.

Businesses also operate in a physical environment. Whether workers are building steel towers or programming code in office spaces, changes to workplace structure are going to make businesses more sustainable during a crisis. Online meeting applications that were once thought too risky for daily corporate communication have suddenly been adopted by even the most technologically-phobic individuals. Changes like these shouldn’t be forgotten, even when we find a vaccine for COVID-19.

Lastly, businesses are part of social and political systems.

Two-party political deadlock, taxation rules that consolidate wealth, xenophobia that chokes the flow of human capital, and unnecessary international conflict have exacerbated our supply chains, turning our global economy into a “buy local” hippie commune that has little resilience when shortages begin. Where I live on the East Coast, we say that a high tide raises all boats. At a time when we needed global cooperation, political rhetoric was instead divisive and trade was stalled.

When individual systems are too attached to one way of doing business, they may look resilient, and even profitable. But, they won’t be able to withstand a disruption as great as a public health crisis. To make industry more resilient and productive, we need to start what resilience scientists refer to as “new regimes of behavior.” That will mean changing from immediate economic gain to considering the long-term social benefits of changing each system that makes a business more resilient.

The good news is that resilience is possible.

Delta Dental Launches Premium Relief Program

D

ue to members being unable to fully utilize their dental benefits during COVID-19, Delta Dental of New Jersey, Inc. (DDNJ) and Delta Dental of Connecticut, Inc. announced the launch of its Premium Relief Program — a 30 percent credit to all individual and fully-insured group customers who had active plans in April, May and June 2020.

“Protecting smiles is our top priority,” said Jeff Furbish, Chief Sales Officer of Delta Dental of New Jersey. “Our clients deserve peace of mind during this challenging and uncertain time, and we hope this relief on premiums will help provide that. We want our customers to know that we are all in this together.”

Invoices for July through September will reflect the corresponding 30 percent credit fully-insured clients will receive based on premiums paid April through June. This premium credit is not available to those with self-insured, DeltaCare Flagship, or DeltaCare USA plans in New Jersey or those with self-insured or DeltaCare USA plans in Connecticut.

This program joins Delta Dental of New Jersey’s and Delta Dental of Connecticut’s other COVID-19 relief efforts, including: • The offering of grace periods for small and large groups, freezing renewal rates for groups with <500 employees, relaxing eligibility for laid-off or furloughed employees;

• Launch of the Dentist Support Program (DSP), offering participating dentists a no-interest advance payment on 2020 claims and a payment of $10 per patient visit to help cover the increased costs of office sanitization and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE); • Establishing a consumer directory of New Jersey and Connecticut dentists who are open for emergency visits; • And donations of more than 20,000 toothbrushes and oral health kits to hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics for patients and healthcare workers.

Best practices when leading and communicating remotely

L

eading and communicating with a team regardless of its size are challenging on a normal basis. Leading and communicating with your team remotely due to social distancing guidelines related to COVID-19 and there is a whole other set of obstacles. Employees may be uncertain about their jobs or the health of the company overall. Some people may be uncomfortable using technology to work remotely.

By using clear, decisive communication, great leaders help their team through these challenges and unprecedented times.

Consider the following best practices when leading a remote team: • Utilize the right tools: One of the biggest challenges when leading a remote team is keeping employees engaged. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to the type of leading and communicating that will work best for your team or, for that matter, for each individual. Use e-mail, video, text and conference calls and file-sharing to keep your team informed of important updates and deadlines.

• Set clear goals and expectations: COVID-19 has forced organizations to look at how and where they are allocating precious resources and finite dollars. As decisions are being made to cut costs and get their fiscal house in order, it is essential to communicate those changes to the team, along with the specific goals and expectations for the organization in the near future. Team members need to know what their role is and what is expected of them as it relates to the larger strategic and operational vision for the organization.

• Share information: Especially when leading remotely, all employees need to “buy in” to the need to share information. It could be an article or news story that impacts the organization or a client, or a new system, procedure or innovative approach for a particular function. Google Drive is a common tool to quickly share information in one location in real time, as is Dropbox.

• Provide opportunities for remote social interaction: Beyond Zoom, Skype, Google Meet or Blue Jeans meetings for work-related items, it is important to connect with your team on a social basis to help avoid feelings of isolation.

Try a virtual pizza party, where pizzas are delivered to all team members at the time of the video conference or a virtual happy hour. Or, allow a few minutes in a meeting to talk about non-work-related items, like what have they been streaming on Netflix or what did they do that weekend.

• Offer Support: Beyond technical and task-related support, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, employees may need more encouragement and emotional support.

Communicate that you are there to listen to their anxieties, fears or concerns, and empathize with what they are feeling.

Go out of your way to check in and ask: How are things going working remotely? What, if anything, can we do to help you be more effective in working remotely? This simple action let’s your employees know you hear them and you value them as a team member.

• Stay connected: Create a prioritized list of calls, texts or e-mails that you will use to connect and communicate with key “stakeholders.” These stakeholders are clients, customers, vendors and, simply put, people who matter in your world. Make sure you keep track of who you communicate with, when you did it and any action you agreed to and be sure to follow up.

• Recognize team members: Make note of specific team members who are “stepping up” and embracing the sometimes dramatic changes that are needed to not just survive, but thrive, in difficult times. Let them know that you appreciate their efforts and, more importantly, their attitude.

Safe Shopping During COVID-19 Shop ‘til you...

T

he beginning of 2020 was shaping up to be a great year for shopping. In-store traffic was at record highs as consumers continued to reap the benefits of one of the longest bull markets in modern history. Nationwide, shopper traffic to retail locations through February was up several percentage points compared to the previous year. …Drop Then in March, as it became clear that containment of the virus would require drastic action, state and local governments began to wrestle with stay-at-home orders and consumer shopping patterns changed. Some jurisdictions—like New York City—saw the effects of the virus early, and the impact on in-store shopping was immediate. By the end of the first week of March, the New York metro area had already started to see declines in retail foot traffic. By March 23, when the New York State lockdown was issued, New York City foot traffic had dropped by 75% from the previous year.

By contrast, Mardi Gras-inspired New Orleans let the good times roll a little longer. The city was still seeing year-over-year increases through mid-March. However, during the third week of March, New Orleans started to see declines to New York, and by March 30, their in-store walk-ins were down almost 80% from the previous year.

Back up?

Now, as states and cities have begun easing their restrictions, shoppers are starting to return to stores. Georgia, for example, which reopened its retail businesses on April 24, has seen retail traffic climb 65% since that then. But even with these increases, shoppers are still wary of strolling into their corner store. One month after opening for business, in-store traffic in Georgia is still way below historical highs and remains at roughly 51% of the peaks in late February.

Elaine Brubacher, a 79 year-old retiree, is one consumer who has completely altered her shopping behavior. Before COVID-19, she used to go shopping twice a week. Now, she says, “I don’t go out.” She has limited her shopping to once every ten days, and only for the necessities: “I’m not doing any shopping other than what is absolutely necessary—the grocery store or the pharmacy.

I’m not comfortable with ‘general shopping.’”

Elaine is not alone. Consumer concerns about the possibility of catching or spreading this invisible disease via social contact are at all-time highs. While many merchants have taken steps to make their locations safer—installing partitions, sanitizing shopping carts, disinfecting pens—many shoppers are still wary of other shoppers.

Safe shopping From that point of view, the safest times to shop are when retailers have the fewest number of shoppers. That’s when the 14

incidence of unintended social contacts is at its lowest.

When are those hours? Sundays before 11 a.m.

Across the retail set as a whole, Sunday is the slowest day of the week, with about 20% fewer shoppers in stores than on other days. Friday is usually the busiest day of the week when crowds are up to 10% higher than Saturday and Thursday (the second and third busiest days). During this crisis, even though overall instore traffic numbers are down dramatically, these traffic pattern trends have held steady.

In the New York/New Jersey area specifically, shoppers don’t get going until about two hours later on Sunday than during the week, which means the hours between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. are the best bets for social distancing. In fact, you are likely to find almost 40% fewer people in a store at 9 a.m. on a Sunday than you would at 9am on a Friday.

The times to avoid shopping are during the week between the hours of noon and 7 p.m. This is when retail locations are their busiest. During the week, evenings are usually busier than mornings, but you want to get there before 9 a.m. Nonetheless, if you want to pick up a few things mid-week after work and want to minimize your social contact risk, you may want to head out Thursdays after 7p.m. Thus far in May, we have seen some slight traffic dips during that time that did not exist before the lockdown orders were in place.

Providing relief to small businesses and municipalities impacted by COVID-19

ergen County Executive Jim Tedesco announces that the County of Bergen will launch a grant program to provide relief for municipalities straddled with expenses related to the COVID-19 pandemic and small businesses financially impacted by the government ordered shutdown. The programs, which utilize CARES Act relief funds, will provide direct reimbursement to municipalities for costs associated with health officials, law enforcement, personal protective equipment (PPE) and social distancing improvements. “Nonessential” businesses that were forced to close as a measure to stop the spread of COVID-19 can receive up to $10,000 in financial relief to cover rent, property mortgage, and utilities expenses.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious financial impact on governments and business communities across the country. It is important that we use available resources to support the municipalities in their efforts to combat the spread of the pandemic and one of the hardest hit sectors, small, mom and pop shops, who were forced to close their doors.

These local businesses are the backbone of Main Street, Bergen County and it is important to support our fellow neighbors as we begin to reopen. This is why I am proud to announce the Bergen County CARES Municipal Reimbursement and Small Business Grant Programs,” said Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco.

“We understand our small Main Street businesses deemed non-essential during the shutdown have struggled to survive. Your continued survival and thriving is essential to us in Bergen County, and we encourage you to apply for this assistance with your rent, business mortgage, utility or other costs,” said Bergen County Freeholder Chairwoman Mary Amoroso. “We are also sensitive to the challenges our municipalities face to provide the critical resources needed to end this pandemic.”

Under the Bergen CARES Municipal Reimbursement Program, all 70 munici-

palities are entitled to direct reimbursement from the County for COVID-19 related expenses identified in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. These expenses include payroll expenses for health care workers and public safety employees, PPE and building improvements.

To qualify for the Bergen County CARES Small Business Grant program, scheduled to receive applications mid-July, businesses must fall under the following criteria: • Businesses with a physical location in Bergen County, NJ. Homebased businesses are eligible.

• Businesses deemed “non-essential” within the classification of “Businesses Required to Close” as per the Governor’s Executive Order No. 104, dated March 16, 2020 • Businesses with 1 – 19 full-time employees • Sole-proprietorships; LLCs; LLPs; Corporations; and S-Corporations are eligible.

• Businesses owned by county employees and elected officials, as well as their immediate families, are not eligible • Businesses must have been open and operating on March 1, 2020 Priority will first be given to businesses who have not received any Federal grant assistance, New Jersey Economic Development Authority grants or US Small Business Administration grant or other grant assistance.

The Bergen County CARES Municipal Reimbursement and Small Business Grant Programs are funded through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act Federal relief fund. The County of Bergen intends to begin accepting applications for both programs by the end of June.

Helpful tips for business recovery and resiliency

s businesses set their sights on recovery and start adjusting to a “new normal” post-COVID-19, it can be difficult to process everything that must be done in order to progress past this pandemic. Below, we’ve provided a brief overview of tips involving your stakeholders, employees, and your organization itself that you should take into consideration when embarking on the path to business recovery: Customers and partners Regularly update and reach out to your relevant stakeholders. These include creditors, investors, suppliers, legal teams, and of course, consumers. Everyone involved in your business operations should know the latest about the goings on of your organization, what you’re doing to move forward, and how the decisions you make coming out of this crisis are going to affect them. Especially at a time like this, maintaining your organization’s relationship with its stakeholders can make a world of difference in your prospects for future success.

Anticipate a change in your consumers’ preferences. This pandemic and its subsequent shutdown will undoubtedly leave a lasting cultural impact that’s going to influence how and where everyone spends their money.

As an organization, you’re going to have to survey the current landscape to determine what your customers value as they gradually come out of their homes. They might feel more comfortable returning to a restaurant in town with their families before they start visiting movie theaters or apparel stores, and you’ll need to plan and adjust accordingly. For instance, if you’re a nonessential business that sells packageable and deliverable products, you might want to make the switch to e-commerce – and be sure to let your loyal customers know.

Communicate clearly with your customers. During such a confusing time, consumers might value organizations that keep in touch with them more highly than they do those that keep them in the dark. Consider sending email blasts about the future of your business operations and the availability of your products, or updating your social media pages with relevant information that your followers can turn to if they have any questions about your service.

Employees Make wellbeing a priority. Throughout the process of

rebuilding, your top consideration should be prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of your employees. Establish transparent communication between management and workers and deliver frequent updates to your workforce, all while making the health of every individual a primary concern. You simply cannot afford to put anyone’s health in jeopardy for the sake of your company.

Consider continuing remote work. Although it isn’t feasible for certain jobs to be done remotely, if possible, consider continuing remote operations and devising strategies to make it more effective. We’re certainly entering a new culture characterized by the rise of remote work, and if it keeps everyone safer than they would be in a physical office space, it might be best to incorporate it as a regular manner of operating until the COVID-19 situation officially settles down.

On the other hand, if you do need to call your employees back to a physical workspace, make sure you at least institute protection measures against infections. Of course, any decisions you make should be in line with the latest public health measures and you want every one of your employees to feel safe while they’re at work.

Take feedback from your employees. Every organization is human at its core, and this truth is by no means one that you should take lightly. Make sure you know how well your employees are faring under the current conditions, remain open to suggestions about how your business can improve and adapt accordingly. Your workers are the driving force that keep your organization up and running so it’s important to provide them with the necessary support – and take their comments and expectations into consideration when moving forward.

Internal management Go back to the basics. As you make the transition into this new normal, it’s worth revisiting the foundations of your organization. Who are you as a collective entity? What are your core values as a company or small business? Independent of your stakeholders, you need to be well acquainted with exactly what you stand for and what your mission is. This should help guide your decisions moving forward, making sure you remain consistent with a true objective and identity.

Make up for lost time. It’s important that you act fast during this time period and adopt a startup mentality, seriously considering and seizing every opportunity to recover your

revenue. Consider decentralizing your operations and creating management teams in order to expedite your decisionmaking processes; time is absolutely of the essence. If you want to rapidly make back at least some of the money you lost during closure, you need to be hyperaware of the opportunities available to your business, and you can’t be afraid to prioritize and act on these opportunities as quickly as possible.

Take full advantage of your available resources. These include all potential technological and governmental support.

Utilize software to better manage your operations — for instance, consider shifting to virtual accounting instead of spending valuable time sifting through physical financial documents — and use digital solutions for further speed and productivity. Considering that many consumers virtually live online nowadays, you might also want to adopt social media and digital communications as part of your business model.

Also remain aware of what governmental support programs are applicable to your organization’s situation; when adapting to the new normal, you’re likely going to need all the financial help you can get.

Revisit your business continuity strategy. As the economy begins to start back up, you’re bound to experience a relatively slow period of growth, especially because of recent international inactivity and changing consumer preferences. In order to fully recover, think about how you’re going to grow moving forward. Monitor your short-term cash flow in order to make predictions about the future of your revenue and consider alternative supply chain options if your current suppliers are in particularly affected areas of the globe.

Restarting your business operations after a period of closure can seem like an incredibly daunting uphill battle, but with the correct priorities and the willingness to adapt in mind, it’s certainly possible to pave your own way back to success.

hen COVID-19 hit, Trisha Wishard, 63, was afraid she wouldn’t be able to get the chemotherapy and radiation therapy she needed to fight her stage 1 breast cancer. Fortunately, she has been able to keep every appointment and attend every treatment at John Theurer Cancer Center part of Hackensack University Medical Center, where her chemotherapy was directed by medical oncologist Deena Atieh Graham, M.D. — with enhanced precautions designed to keep her safe.

“I didn’t want to be set back,” contended Trisha, director of operations for a staffing firm in Rutherford, who lives in Clifton with her husband, Bill and her son BJ. “I wanted to get everything done as quickly as possible – it’s important to keep up with your treatment.”

When we consider how much more we are relying on connected devices to help weather this pandemic – and how much personal, sensitive data is being collected in the process – business leaders must place security top of mind. W

e’ve all been amazed – and at times overwhelmed – by the idea of being totally connected at all times. Who leaves a room without first grabbing their cell phone, much less leaving the house without it? We have desktops and laptops in our homes and offices, we have our smart phones and our tablets. Our vehicles are smart, letting us know when we need service or emergency assistance. Our TV’s stream our favorite movies and shows and music is often streamed in almost every room in the house.

We are indeed fully connected to the internet at all times.

With all of these conveniences we’ve come to rely on, we must also become much more aware that our “attack surface” has become much broader and more susceptible than ever before. Our “attack surface” is essentially the total sum of attack points that we’ve given cybercriminals to potentially take advantage of. By doing so, they may gain unauthorized access to our private information not meant to be exposed to the outside world.

Many of us know to be careful with the obviously connected devices mentioned above, but many are not aware of all the other access points that may be vulnerable as well. These may include toasters, microwaves, refrigerators, ovens, “Instant Pots”, thermostats, doorbells, alarm systems, alarm clocks, smart watches and a never-ending list of devices that are connected to the internet and can communicate via the web.

These are called smart devices.

Any smart device that has outside internet access has an attack surface that could be compromised. This collection of smart devices is called the “Internet of Things”, or IoT.

IoT by definition Wikipedia defines the Internet of Things (IoT) as “a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-tohuman or human-to-computer interaction.”

The IoT is literally exploding in size. It’s comprised of billions of smart devices from mini-components in our homes and vehicles – to huge machines and systems that use wireless technology to communicate with each other and with us humans.

The IoT world is growing at an astonishing pace, with the experts estimating the number of IoT devices in 2019 at approximately 200 billion and growing to approximately 1.1 trillion by 2026.

That number represents about 135 smart objects for every man, women and child on planet earth.

Security concerns are growing With the immense number of smart devices, many of which we don’t even think about, we have increased the size of our attack surface. In response, we must increase our security awareness and become all the more diligent to protect our digital assets, at home and at work.

Below are some practical steps you can take that will lower your vulnerability to cyberattacks: 1. Identify and keep track of all your devices to the best of your ability. You can’t protect what you are not aware of. This is the starting point for your IoT security posture.

2. Continue to password protect any devices you are able to. Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication where possible. Any device you connect to your home network should be treated no differently than your key devices, such as your laptop and desktop. This includes smart TVs, music and other streaming devices, and smart home control components.

3. Keep all your devices updated to the latest software revision and software patch level. This may be a bit more inconvenient and cumbersome than your main devices, but no less important.

4. Identify those components you do not have security access to. Validate the manufacture’s security posture and be sure those components are being updated and patched as necessary.

5. Ensure a strong and secure entry point into the home and/or office. By establishing a near impenetrable barrier to the outside world, most devices on the interior will be less vulnerable by default. Even so, also protect each device as if it were completely exposed to the outside threat.

6. Be sure not to transmit sensitive data through any devices that go outside the walls of protection and may not have a secure tunnel (i.e. VPN or comparable).

Remember, it’s highly likely that someone is listening, and does not have your best interest in mind.

7. These basic and practical steps offer a good starting point to protect your own personal Internet of Things, thus protecting your data and personal information from those that want to gain access to the things that are private and personal to you. Be diligent, be aware, and be safe.

Scarinci Hollenbeck: Five-step plan to safety

A

s the spread of COVID-19 began to ravage New Jersey in early March, it became clear that either a mandatory or at the very least,voluntary quarantine would be inevitable. Scarinci Hollenbeck took immediate action by implementing its disaster plan and transitioning its workforce out of the office.

While Managing Partner Donald Scarinci worked with the firm’s administrative team to develop and implement a five-step plan to guide the firm to economic safety, the attorneys focused their efforts on serving clients and conducting business as usual. fter learning the Meadowlands YMCA was working with Table to Table to distribute meals to local families in need, the Meadowlands Racetrack and its restaurant partner, Ark Meadowlands, pitched in to help feed the local community. Meadowlands Racetrack donated over 600 meals along with fresh vegetables, cases of water, gatorade and soda to the Meadowlands YMCA to support their efforts in feeding families in need. Meadowlands Racetrack employees volunteered their time to help pack up the meal boxes and bag the vegetables at the Meadowlands YMCA. “When we learned that our community was in need, we knew we could help immediately,” said Jason Settlemoir, COO & GM of Meadowlands Racetrack. “I’d like to thank Jennifer Jordan for organizing this food drive for us and Marianne Rotella, Marcello Esposito, Lisa Smoter, Rachel Ryan and Raul Perez for working so hard on getting this done.”

pple Spice recognized early on the need to shift focus and concentrate on providing healthy and meals to essential workers. They were able to do this safely and efficiently because they specialize in delivering individually packaged meals to begin with.

Therefore most of their assembly of the food they provide did not change. Apple Spice’s Meals for Heroes initiative has been promoted on social media and they have been able to reach nearly 50 area businesses and individuals who have sponsored over 2,500 meals for healthcare professionals, police, fire fighters and EMT’s.

Apple Spice made the decision to remain open during this pandemic in order to serve their community. They are confident that this will demonstrate to their existing client base and new clients that they are prepared at a moment’s notice.
