On September 21, the MC’s Small Business Council will host a major cybersecurity session with leaders from the Federal Bureau of Investigations, United States Department of Homeland Security, United States Secret Service as well as academic and industry experts. This is one of those morning session that you should carve out some time to attend. We will continue to bring you insightful opinions and commentary from Thought Leaders, such as on page 6 where Mike Considine, vice president of consumer, small group and mid-sized markets at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, discusses how enhancements to the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) can help to keep healthcare premiums down in New HereJersey.is what we know for sure. We must all take better care of our own personal health and wellness so we can care for our businesses and our families. So, what are we waiting for...let’s get healthy together!

Onward we go, Jim PresidentKirkos& MeadowlandsCEOChamber

MEADOWLANDS BUSINESS REPORT

The MC staff and I spend much time talking to members so we can understand what is on the minds of job creators. In this current post-pandemic economy, we are still enduring supply chain issues and staffing shortages while coping with inflation. So, the “pivot” continues to weigh heavily on the minds of business Ensuringowners. a sustainable economy so businesses have some chance at future growth is the number one topic presented to us. And it covers companies of all sizes. That is why the MC focuses much attention on the public affairs issues affecting our ability to build and sustain strong opportunities for success. Transportation infrastructure, flood control, tourism development and, in particular, the regulatory environment, are all key elements that have a big impact on the Greater Meadowlands economy. Our recent Eggs & Issues seminars have included New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) Vincent Prieto and the former Senate President Steve Sweeney. We will continue our Eggs & Issues series in the fall as we try to have an impact on public policy on your behalf.

The second big topic pertains to health and wellness. Providing affordable health benefits to employees that will attract and retain talent, having access to superior medical treatment and gaining the knowledge to know how to navigate these complex issues are priorities for all. Hackensack Meridian Health Palisades Medical Center, pictured on the cover, is a leader here in New Jersey as they raise the bar of care. Check out the article on page 18 to learn more about how this world-class facility is enhancing its services to meet the evolving healthcare needs of our community. Cybersecurity also continues to be a major topic too, as many people do not take this issue seriously enough.

What’s important to business owners and executives?

What Horizon is doing More New Jerseyans choose Horizon for their health plan than any other carrier. As a notfor-profit health insurer, our focus is on helping our members. That’s why we are urging New Jersey’s federal lawmakers to make permanent the enhanced subsidies provided under ARPA.

veryone should have access to quality, affordable healthcare no matter who you are or where you live in New Jersey. A federal law enacted in 2021 increased the subsidies available to individuals and families who purchased insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) marketplace. That law, The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), significantly reduced premiums for nearly 300,000 New Jerseyans. Who is facing higher premiums? In response to the economic hardships triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, ARPA expanded insurance premium relief for consumers. The law temporarily lowered premiums for most people who currently purchased a health plan through a government marketplace. It also raised income eligibility for financial assistance to other consumers so that they could more easily afford coverage. For 2022, individuals earning $77,280 and a family of four with income up to $159,000 were eligible for financial help. Why may premiums rise? Unless extended or made permanent by Congress, ARPA will expire at the end of the year. With the federal subsidies ending, many New Jerseyans may pay much more for health coverage through the marketplace and leave those who can’t afford the unsubsidized rates uninsured. Here’s How Many New Jerseyans Are Affected The federal changes have been a critical healthcare affordability factor for families in New Jersey, where the median household income of $85,245 is fourth highest among all U.S states. The enhanced subsides last year benefited about 300,000 New Jerseyans and fueled a 15.6% – or 42,132 increase – in ACA plan state enrollment last year. The opinions expressed in this section are those of the submitting authors and do not necessarily represent the views of and may not be attributed as opinions of the Meadowlands Chamber or Meadowlands Media.

To figure out what you will pay should ARPA expire, a subsidy calculator can be found here: subsidyestimator.com/representative-tool/ To give a few examples: subsidyestimator.com/representative-tool/

We’re also asking Congress to automatically enroll individuals eligible for Medicaid or premium-free marketplace plans. This change will help those who are entitled to free coverage but who struggle to understand their choices or the enrollment process gain the protection and peace of mind that health insurance provides. What YOU can do We ask you to join us by connecting with your congressperson to share your view. Let your Representative or US Senator know whether or not you want Congress to act to keep health insurance more affordable for people who purchase their plans through the individual marketplace.

8 August 2022meadowlandsmedia.com LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP

Acknowledge and recognize your people: Great leaders are vigilant in recognizing and celebrating when team members succeed. Send an e-mail about someone doing a great job, not just to them but, in some cases, to the entire team. Reward them financially beyond their base salary with bonuses and, if appropriate, salary adjustments for going above and beyond. Again, no guarantee they are going to stay, but not doing it is simply not smart. Put people in a position to succeed: Smart leaders identify the key strengths of their team members and put them in the right roles for success. Of course, we need to develop people in areas where they can improve, however, this should not be done by putting them in a position to fail— which will only increase the odds that disappointment and disillusion will set in. Lead on a two-way street: It’s one thing to communicate specific goals that YOU would like a team member to accomplish, but it is also important that a team member is given the opportunity to tell you what he or she thinks is important. Creating a two-way street with open communication is critical to effective mentoring and coaching.

It’s not personal (or is it?)

Variety motivates: If you do the same thing every day, you are going to be unmotivated and disengaged. Conversely, mixing up your professional portfolio is motivating. Smart leaders are constantly looking at a team member’s responsibilities and looking for ways to challenge them to get outside their comfort zone.

Be consistent in your expectations: Great leaders communicate to employees exactly what they expect and when their people perform at that level, they are rewarded and recognized. Real employee engagement requires open and honest communication that is consistent and clear. Changing expectations on a whim and sending conflicting messages about goals can be frustrating to a team member. Collaborate and involve employees in the decision-making process: You are not expected to have all the answers. Sometimes, as a leader, sharing a difficult question or challenge with employees and asking for their feedback will engage them in identifying a possible solution. This often creates a greater degree of ownership and investment in the team and organization.

The Great Resignation

T he pandemic-era trend, known as the “Great Resignation,” where workers are quitting their jobs at near-record levels in search of opportunities elsewhere amid strong labor demand, is a reality for so many leaders. Consider the following “best practices” that can increase the odds that your best people will want to stay on board: Stay connected on a regular basis: The goal is to make regular communication with every team member part of your leadership DNA. It is not a check off the box kind of thing. It is keeping it on the top of your mind and staying engaged. For example, texting, e-mailing, calling out of the blue, just to see how team members are doing and what issues or challenges they may be having. Read the tea leaves: For leaders that are intuitive and have a high degree of emotional intelligence you should be able to pick up the signs that something is off or wrong with a particular team member. I am not talking about looking for a problem that doesn’t exist but listen and observe. It is about tone of voice, body language, a lack of engagement and enthusiasm. Hoping things work out isn’t really a great plan. Show me the money: Given how many options people have in the marketplace, you’ve got to invest the dollars if you can afford it. No, it is not a guarantee that people will stay, but having people leave over “money” in this environment is an unforced error, because the amount of money, time and effort we spend recruiting and training new people costs a heck of a lot more.

S ince acquiring the Hudson Regional Hospital (HRH) in 2018, CEO Dr. Nizar Kifaieh, along with Chairman Yan Moshe, have implemented a plan to revive the hospital through a focus on practice areas important to the community and providing safe, quality and affordable healthcare to its neighbors in Secaucus, Hudson County and the greater New York City metropolitan area.

The last four years have been marked by new departmental openings, renovations and technology additions, transforming HRH into an environment that attracts some of the world’s top medical professionals, supports career growth and provides a location where healthcare advancements are both inspired and implemented.

Hudson Regional Hospital: Transformation in Progress

Hudson Regional Hospital CEO Dr. Nizar Kifaieh

HRH invested more than $10 million to make its Institute of Robotic Surgery (IRS) the only facility in the New York City metropolitan area offering a suite of minimally invasive surgical tools. These include the ExcelsiusGPS, the DaVinci XI and the Mazor Robotic Guidance System, along with state-of-the-art equipment like the Hitachi Oasis

One of Dr. Kifaieh’s first decisions as CEO was to file with healthcare watchdog Leapfrog, despite its meaning that HRH would be graded based on the previous owner’s performance.Thisserved as a benchmark that was quickly overcome, earning a B-rating this year – making HRH the only hospital in Hudson County to be rated a B or higher Dr. Kifaieh’s high standard of excellence was mirrored by his emergency room staff, which earned the New Jersey Department of Health’s Primary Stroke Center designation to ensure patients receive immediate access to emergency care without having to travel further outside their community in the critical minutes after stroke symptoms first appear.

1.2T High Field Open MRI. HRH’s surgeons received the Surgical Review Corporation’s (SRC) first ever accreditation for Excellence in Care in Spine Surgery and its Spine Surgery Division will be the standard for all SRC future reviews. That’s in addition to the IRS also receiving accreditation for bariatrics, robotic joint replacement, minimally invasive surgery and was named a Center of Excellence for minimally invasive gynecology. With its distinction as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery, which it previously received, the IRS is the only hospital in Hudson County with six accreditations from the nonprofit whose mission is to ensure better safety and outcomes for surgical patients. Additionally, two of HRH’s practitioners are recognized by the SRC. Long-term Physician Assistant Kaitlyn Probasco, DMSc, PA-C was awarded the Care Specialist Accreditation this year, following Dr. Yitzhack Asulin, MD, FACS, FACOG, Director of the IRS and its Director of the Female Pelvic Reconstruction and Robotic Surgery. Dr. Asulin is also the only master surgeon in the Tri-State Area. Dr. Kifaieh has presented HRH as a place for surgical medical innovations to be established and rolled out for wider use. Most recently, its Chief of Surgery Maurizio Miglietta, DO, FACOS is the first and only surgeon in New Jersey to use OviTex® reconstruction material. Additionally, he encourages his patients to be part of the decision-making process on what type of reconstructive materials he should use pre-operation. In 2021, Dr. Anders Cohen, DO one of the many internationallyknown practitioners to have privileges at HRH, performed the first cervical fusion procedure in the world using the Blackhawk™ Ti Cervical Spacer System. Dr. Cohen, is also the Lead Design Surgeon for the device. In 2020, HRH became the first hospital in the U.S. to use the FDA-approved NanoVapor BioTech Microbial Suppression System (MSS), a large-scale application system that disinfects and protects surfaces from all microorganisms including viruses like the COVID-19 for 70 days or more. In early 2020, HRH was the first hospital in NJ to provide drive-through COVID-19 testing with a telephone pre-screening program. This was part of an extensive COVID-19 response that earned us the designation as the official COVID-19 testing site by Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise.

While Dr. Kifaieh and Mr. Moshe have accomplished an incredible transformation to date, they will continue to move HRH’s capabilities forward with plans to become a larger healthcare network for Hudson County and beyond.

In January 2019 HRH began using the Surfacide Helios system to kill superbugs, or multi-drug resistant organisms, in all its operating suites, labor and delivery suites and isolation rooms. HRH secured accreditation by the international standard DNV-GL.HRH is also flexible work environment. The hospital was recently honored with the Patriotic Employer Award by the Office of the Secretary of Defense for providing flexible in- and outpatient scheduling to one of its doctors so that he could perform his duties as a member of the US Army Reserves Medical Service Corp during the COVID-19 crisis.

Delta Dental

• Benefit plans that meet minimal essential coverage as mandated by the Affordable Care Act

“Delta Dental shares the MC’s desire to see strong, resilient small businesses,” says Christian Lambrugo, sales executive of small group and individual markets at Delta Dental.

Finally, MBA was attracted to the convenience of the MC’s Meadowlands Media division as a vehicle for communicating updates and information about the program.

A s part of its ‘New in 22’ campaign launched earlier this year, the Meadowlands Chamber (MC) rolled out an exclusive health benefits program. The new program grants members access to substantial and cost-worthy employee benefits at special group rates, including health insurance, voluntary benefits and dental insurance.

What does the program provide?

One of the firms involved in the program is My Benefit Advisor, which has a seasoned team dedicated to “guiding employers through the complexity of planning, managing and communicating successful employee benefits programs,” said Rob Higginbotham from My BenefitMyAdvisor.BenefitAdvisor, comprised of local experts who know the ‘ins and outs’ of the New Jersey market, decided to partner with the MC in launching the program for four core reasons. The first two include the MC’s strong history in serving businesses to provoke innovation and economic growth, as well as the MC’s goal to drive success for all members. Next, MBA recognized the similarity between the MC’s membership profiles and the many nonprofits and small businesses MBA already assists.

The second firm partner organization in the MC Health Benefits Program is World Insurance, which puts small and mid-sized businesses on the path to receiving large company benefits through its association and affinity program. This uniquely created program offers seven distinct PPO plan designs, all using Aetna’s First Health network. While the cost of the program is already greatly discounted, it can become even lower when choosing from the seven reference-based pricing (RBP) options using the Private Healthcare Systems, Inc. Employee benefits packages have evolved in various ways over the years, as the workplace is an everchanging, continuously shifting environment. With this comes a competitive race for retaining talented and skilled employees. The present-day standard for education means students are expected to achieve higher and obtain more prestigious levels of education, resulting in a large number of recent graduates with talent and intelligence. The race to attract and retain these individuals has sped up tremendously, picking up great speed amid the current labor shortage sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic.

My Benefit Advisor, World Insurance and Delta Dental have joined hands with the MC in creating a brand-new health benefits program for MC members, offering cost-effective, tailored options and group rates they may not otherwise have access to.

Partnering with the MC in launching the new health benefits program was the perfect opportunity for Delta Dental to extend its friendly, caring customer service, easy claims processing and easy, no-cost quotes to MC members, says Lambrugo.

Lastly, the MC is partnered with Delta Dental of New Jersey and Connecticut, consisting of local and national dental benefits leaders. The company has more than 83,000,000 American members, including 1,800,000 members covered in New Jersey and Connecticut.

• Financial insufficiency due to shift reductions;

Business owners are struggling to attract and retain employees in the inconvenient, unpredictable times we are facing. Although, it is in our hopes that the pandemic will come to a complete end, it’s important to understand how to survive amid the chaos.

As previously touched upon, a “war for talent” is brewing in today’s marketplace. This was happening even prior to 2020 but the pandemic has accelerated the labor shortage to near crisis levels. To start off, COVID-19 disrupted the labor market by initially requiring locations to close or limit operation. With this came insufficient incoming cash flow, forcing many businesses to furlough or let go of Anotheremployees.trendthat

As an employer, it is important that you are creating and updating your offered health insurance programs. For starters, a robust benefits program encourages the safety and good health of the employees in your business. Employees who are in a stronger state of wellbeing tend to evoke more compassion and pride in what they Passionate,do. engaged workers will benefit your company simply by having the drive and motivation it takes to build the business up. In turn, consumers will also be attracted to this lively energy and choose your business for their needs. Staying on top of the latest innovations and improvements in health benefits promotes higher levels of employee health and wellbeing. Employees want to invest their time and dedicate their careers somewhere they are appreciated – and treated as more than just a number. Personable, caring environments are, more times than not, the more popular, successful workplaces. All in all, employees find it attractive when their employer prioritizes them and shows appreciation for their contribution to a business. Therefore, in order to achieve the win-win, it’s crucial to keep up with the moving trends. Navigating a tightening labor market

Offering health benefits programs during these circumstances prioritizes employee’s mental health and wellbeing especially when it’s most necessary. This is a huge attraction for employees particularly in times of despair, like the present COVID-19 pandemic, because it gives them a sense of safety and care in their workplace.

The labor market is anticipated to remain tight through 2022 and beyond. With this, it’s necessary to come up with your plan to attract, retain and engage top talent.

“Attractive benefit offerings are critically important in attracting and retaining employees, especially in this tight labor market,” said Kirkos.Lambrugo added, “A key ingredient for small business success is to be able to attract and retain employees with benefits that job seekers are looking for.”

Notably, the pandemic has also taken a toll on individuals in a variety of ways. Subsequently, health benefits programs – including mental health – can be a tool that businesses use to protect their workforce and navigate a tightening labor market.

• Pest issues can also damage a reputation and impact the patient experience. With the rise of social media and smart phones, the best and worst of situations can and are often caught on camera.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” as Benjamin Franklin said. This quote is of particular significance in both the healthcare and pest control industries.

• There can be immediate health risks associated with pests as many are vectors of disease. In an environment where health and immune systems may already be compromised, this should be top of mind.

• There can be financial impacts – such as the closing of operating rooms, emergency rooms or other areas of a facility – which impact revenue.

An ounce of (pest) prevention is worth a pound of cure in healthcare settings

I t is common knowledge that pest control is a relatively small line item in operating budgets when it comes to healthcare facilities. That does not and should not diminish the importance of pest control in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for both employees and patients. Pest control, while a necessity, typically becomes more important when there is a pest issue to deal with. Why risk the extra costs? Issues can be costly in any number of ways:

Communication is key. The technician should have a point of contact at each location – someone they can, at a minimum, check in with once per service. This meeting enables both parties to share vital information regarding what is happening at the facility, provide recommendations and, if necessary, point out any outstanding issues.

Prevent the pests

Outdoor prevention Your provider should be doing what they can to reduce pest pressure from the outside, as well. Services may include the installation and routine service on exterior rodent bait stations and perimeter treatments to reduce insect populations adjacent to the buildings, which involve proactive applications to reduce insect populations.

Key areas to consider are dumpsters, recycling areas, exterior lounge areas where food may be eaten and outside garbage containers. Preventative steps should be taken, such as moving garbage

Pest control and prevention is a team effort. Your provider and facility staff need to work together consistently to reduce risk. What might that look like?

Both parties have a lot to offer. The client and their staff spend many more hours at the facility and, therefore, have an opportunity to see and observe more of what is happening at any point in time.

Communicate

While the pest control technicians spend less time, they can take steps to purposefully inspect, monitor and go into places that staff members rarely visit or inspect. These areas can include cooklines, boiler rooms, old storage areas and drop ceilings, to name a few.

Regardless of being able to meet face-to-face every week, the use of a logbook also allows for this communication to happen and for actions to be documented.

Your pest control provider should be able to help you identify and prioritize these items. I can assure you that your service provider, just like you, would rather take preventative steps from the exterior than provide corrective actions inside. Indoor prevention There are many things that can be done inside proactively, as well, by focusing on the areas conducive to pest activity. These include food availability, excess moisture, ease of access, flow of people and the structure itself. Notably, pests can be carried into a facility on staff, patients, visitors and Proactiveproductsmeasures to be taken inside include the use of insect light traps, mechanical rodent control devices, monitors and, in some areas, depending on the history, proactive applications. Areas of highest concern are kitchens, gift shops, kitchenettes, storage areas (especially food storage), areas with floor drains, dishwashing rooms, boiler rooms, locker rooms and loading docks. Be proactive Partnering with your pest control provider can play an important role in maintaining a healthy environment for all who enter the facility. Being proactive is no guarantee against an occasional flare up. However, by working as a team and responding quickly, those issues can typically be identified and rectified quickly.

I nternational trade for some companies can be a daunting but sometimes necessary step in increasing sales and finding lower cost suppliers. Competition is no longer local or even domestic. US companies are often competing on a global level and must develop strategies to remain relevant and profitable internationally. Companies should be on the lookout for international business opportunities to expand their horizons. With this, they will need to formulate and finance international business plans to become successful internationally. This process is thorough and may take time to fully understand and fulfill. Understanding that international trade is no longer the exclusive domain of multinationals, Fortune 500 companies and publicly-traded conglomerates. An increasing number of companies are doing business overseas. They may be buying from overseas or selling overseas, and in some cases both! The trend toward global business expansion will continue, because over 94% of customers worldwide live outside the United States. There are certainly more and more opportunities for small businesses and middle market clients to grow their business outside the United States.

• Forward: This refers to the process of buying or selling one currency against another then settling at a predetermined date in the future.

Let’s talk about the basics

2. Trade finance: This term is the umbrella for a set of techniques and financing capabilities with the sole purpose of mitigating and transferring trade risks from a commercial party to the financial sector.

It’s time to start handling business internationally

3. Foreign exchange: This type of exchange has to do with changing one country’s currency to that of another country. Steps for shifting gears Companies who decide to engage in international business are often under the misconception that you must hire a highpriced international sales director. However, some companies are very successful in identifying an internal candidate who is motivated and up to the challenge of developing your global strategies. Another option is hiring a college intern from a local college or university to assess and offer an outside fresh perspective for global growth. When shifting focus, a company must also formulate a functional international sales plan that acknowledges global risk while also considering risks in buyer-sellers, credit, payment vs. delivery, performance, country, currency, documentary, product quality, transportation, regulatory compliance, transaction structure and fraud. What actions can be taken during global disruption?

Why should businesses start looking across borders?

From 2020 to the current moment, the global COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that our world and the events that take place can be of utmost unpredictability. No business knew that the COVID-19 pandemic was going to take place and run wild.In turn, there were no business plans or recovery plans that were generated prior. The pandemic forced business owners to act on a whim and make decisions by the second. Now that we know these possibilities exist, we can plan for their hypothetical reoccurrences. and the exporter to create various supplier relationships in multiple countries.

I f you recall from previous articles, IT operations management (ITOM) focuses on the monitoring and management of the IT infrastructure from an availability, event and performance perspective. ITOM also includes the service desk and the processes and procedures around various areas, such as incident, problem, change, configuration and other management areas. The service desk is typically where the aforementioned processes are instrumented and the procedures automated. IT device configurations are typically stored in the service desk configuration management database (CMDB) and changes to those configurations would be approved in the service desk. The function of the service desk is the reason CCM is thought of as purely ITOM or IT service management (ITSM). Let’s look at CCM from a cybersecurity perspective. The two functional areas are clearly the ITOM or ITSM areas. They have a significant impact on the security posture of an organization. Having a well-defined and documented change management strategy helps organizations know the current state of their configuration items (CIs), i.e., servers, desktops, applications, databases, network devices, storage devices, etc. Knowing the current state of a device allows the IT team to make sure all components are up to the latest approved configuration and whether there are any gaps or conflicts with any patches or applications. When known vulnerabilities come to light, the IT team can be sure to make the required changes to protect the asset under change management control. When it comes to patching, this activity becomes very important to an organization’s cybersecurity posture. Let me explain by way of a scenario. During normal operation, a bad actor develops malware code that is not known to the security vendors, therefore there is no patch to protect against the attack. A period of time goes by during which the bad actor is able to monitor or exploit the organization.

THIS ARTICLE IS THE FOURTH IN THE “NEEDING ITOM” SERIES. This article will focus on the importance of change and configuration management and the role it plays in a strong cybersecurity solution. Change and configuration management (CCM) is the process of maintaining the integrity of hardware, software, firmware and documentation related to the change and configuration management process. Attend the Cybersecurity Session on September 21, presented by the Meadowlands Small Business Council. More information: meadowlands.org

Needing ITOM when the market screams cybersecurity

Understanding the importance of change and configuration management

Let’s call that duration of time (t1). At some point in time, the exploitation becomes known. The security vendor(s) develop, test and make available a patch to be applied to the server to protect against- or remediate- the exploitation. Let’s call this duration of time (t2). Unfortunately, we would typically have no control over the length of time periods (t1) or (t2). The time period we do have control over is the length of time starting when the patch is released, downloaded into our test environment, tested, approved

= (t1) + (t2) + (t3) As previously mentioned, we only have control over the (t3) factor, so keeping that as tight as possible allows us to close the door on the bad actor as quickly as possible. Poor patching and updating cadences have caused many organizations to suffer loss at the hands of a bad actor even when a patch or upgrade was available to easily avoid the loss. Don’t let yourself be “that guy.”

There are numerous other roles that change and configuration management plays in a cyber resilient organization. For instance, identifying unauthorized changes, unapproved software loaded on a system, and many other items. For a bit more information on security-focused configuration management based on the NIST 800128 standard, see my article with the same name in the February 2021 issue of the MeadowlandsUSA magazine.

Let’s call that window of time (t3) our patching cadence. This would be the time it takes us to obtain the known patch and have it applied to our system to avoid, remove or remediate the now known vulnerability. This widow of time becomes vitally important as this is the widow of time that the bad actor knows his or her free ride is coming to end. This is when they look to take advantage of the remaining time as much as possible before the door Total_Time_Explotationcloses.

Mike Battistella is the President of Solutions³ LLC, an IT Management Company focusing on Cybersecurity Governance, Risk Management, Compliance (GRC), & Training, IT Service Management (ITSM), IT Operations Management (ITOM), Critical Notification, and Technical Training. Mike is also the North American Regional Director for Cybersecurity-Professionals, and the Director of Government Solutions for the DVMS Institute.

What are the ITOM tools that help in these scenarios? The following all play a significant role in maintaining a strong cybersecurity posture from an ITOM or ITSM perspective: your consolidated service desk which supports the instrumentation of your CCM processes, the service desk automation of your CCM procedures and associated workflows and your IT automation tools for the execution and orchestration of associated tasks. An organization should also look to “harden” their servers and applications. To do so simply means to keep operating systems and applications to their latest patch levels, use strong passwords in alignment with the organization’s password policy, automatically lock accounts after a minimal number of failed login attempts (typically 3), remove users that no longer need system or application access, enable multi-factor authentication and use data or disk drive encryption in accordance with company policy.

THE FRANCISCAN UNIVERSITY OF

President,

Vice Admiral, JAGC, U.S. Navy (ret.) Felician University

James W. Crawford III

Changing the world... ...one graduate at a time.

Leaders are often formed in the crucible of challenging times and events, such as we face today. The whole of humanity has faced a massive and deadly pandemic that continues to reshape everything that gives substance to our lives at every level—whether leisure or business related, national or international, individual or community. The way we live has been forever changed, but human beings are the most adaptable living creature on the planet, and we will find our footing. At Felician, these past two years of COVID have not been an impediment to teaching and learning, but rather an opportunity to evolve the Felician learning environment and learning delivery to provide our students with a whole learning experience to enable resilience and adaptability. Every day within this University we offer our prayers for all those the world has lost to this virus and for those whose lives have been made more complicated by COVID’s impact.

This pandemic has demonstrated we cannot always control the conditions that affect us, but it has also shown in stark relief that we always have control over the behaviors that enable us to overcome adversity. These COVID times, with all the unknowns, unpredictability, and constant change, have presented the greatest possible life lesson. Felician has sought, through a compassionate and substantive approach, to bring out the best in every student. Our students learn to act with alacrity and agility, to embrace change, and to use failure to beget success—to never stop learning and evolving. When the Felician student looks back and recalls this time of great trial they will remember the losses experienced, but will also celebrate the skills and capacities gained to succeed, no matter the height or duration of the obstacle. They will have the courage to step up and lead within their communities with confidence, understanding, as my Dad always said, “you may not be able to control the time and nature of the challenge, but you are the master of how you respond thereto.”

If you want a job-ready, committed, enthusiastic, diligent, and character-based individual who can communicate, engage, listen, learn, lead, and follow on your team, then you want a Felician graduate!

Elevating the Arc of Every Life NEW JERSEY

These students now have an experiential understanding that, if you dwell on the difficulty of the moment, you will only see darkness. But if you look inward to the light of the human spirit, anyone can serve as a beacon. Even with masks and physical distancing, our students found new ways to engage with fellow students, interact with our great faculty and staff, ingest the skills and knowledge offered them, and continue to make a difference through volunteering and supporting collective community efforts. It states the obvious to say that the past two years presented a most unique university experience but let there be no doubt—the Felician graduate is ready to have immediate impact, wherever their life path leads them.
