PARENT/STUDENT POLICIES

2024 SUMMER SCHOOL PARENT/STUDENT POLICIES

GENERAL

All students who attend the Mater Dei Summer School Program must agree to abide by the policies of Mater Dei High School.

● Students are expected to conduct themselves with Honor, Glory, and Love at all times

● Please visit our school’s website to view the Mater Dei Parent/Student Handbook for the 2023-2024 school year, which contains a full description of our policies Failure to uphold conduct codes will result in disciplinary actions as outlined in the Mater Dei Parent/Student Handbook.

● The additional information below outlines specic details as they pertain to Summer School only

BELL SCHEDULE & IMPORTANT DATES

Summer School begins on Monday, June 17, with classes scheduled according to the Block Schedule. Summer School will conclude on Friday, July 19. Summer School holidays (no class sessions) are June 19 (Juneteenth) and July 4 and 5 (Independence Day)

All course types (Incoming Freshmen/HSP, Credit Advancement, Credit Recovery) follow a BLOCK SCHEDULE with RED and GRAY classes.

ATTENDANCE

Summer School runs for FIVE (5) weeks, and students are expected to be present every day that class is in session to maximize their learning of the material and earning the appropriate grade Approximately 1 week of material is covered each day during Summer School These courses are intensive and move quickly, and absences are strongly discouraged If a student is absent for any reason, please contact the Summer School Ofce.

● No more than THREE (3) absences from class are allowed without prior approval from the Summer School Ofce Any student who is absent FOUR (4) or more classes may be dropped from the class Students dropped because of excessive absences are NOT eligible for any tuition refund Late registration is calculated into total days absent

○ This policy applies to absences from required online class meetings (e g Art I Credit Advancement)

○ For online class meetings, teachers will take attendance and will communicate with students so that they know what is expected to be considered present for class

● Students who are tardy THREE (3) times will receive ONE (1) absence. Excessive tardiness to class may result in failure of the course

● Students who miss class for any reason must communicate with their teacher(s) and are responsible for making up missed work.

● All classes will hold Final Exams on Thursday, July 18 (Red) or Friday, July 19 (Gray).

○ Parents/students should not request that students complete Final Exams before this date, as class time is necessary for preparation. However, if needed, Early Final Exams are offered for a $50 fee and must be arranged through the Summer School Ofce before Friday, July 12.

○ No Final Exams will be given after the close of Summer School on Friday, July 19

DRESS CODE

All students–whether on campus or online–are expected to abide by the Spirit Dress policies as outlined in the Parent/Student Handbook (Section 708) The Summer School Administration and teachers reserve the right to determine the appropriateness of grooming and attire Failure to adhere to the dress code policies will result in disciplinary measures

ALL STUDENTS:

● Students may wear school uniform pants, uniform shorts, skirts (girls only), long blue, khaki, red, gray, or black denim jeans or pants in good condition

● Any shirts or sweatshirts worn by students in spirit dress must be in the red, gray, or white, and include the Mater Dei name or logo

● Vicki Marsha uniform shirts may be worn on spirit dress days. GIRLS ONLY:

● Black leggings (no cutouts, patterns, or see-through material permitted)

Per Section 703 in the Parent/Student Handbook (“Unacceptable Dress at any Mater Dei Event”), the following are NEVER permitted:

● Writing and images on clothing not in accordance with Christian decency

● Any hemline more than 3 inches above the knee

● Clothes not tailored in accordance to Christian decency (i e pants/skirts/shorts not worn at the natural waist, oversized clothing, baggy clothing, tight tting, tank, halter, mini dress/skirt, low cut, exposed or bare midriff or back, revealing neckline, backless, or spaghetti top)

● Clothing that is not clean, neat, and free from damage (i e no frayed edges, cut-off sleeves, holes, ripped/torn etc.)

● Jeans not in accordance with Christian decency (i e hip huggers, jeggings or denim leggings, cut-off jeans)

● Jean/denim skirts of any kind

● Any kind of pant worn under a skirt

● Short shorts, cut-offs, P.E. shorts or beach type shorts

● Over the knee socks, shnet stockings, leg warmers

● Wallet chains

● Gang/tag crew related clothing

● Excessive, extreme, or faddish jewelry

● Body piercing/facial piercings/tongue piercings

● Hat or bandana of any kind, including beanies and hoods (Mater Dei hats may be worn at athletic events only; hats must be worn correctly and not facing backwards)

● Earrings (for boys)

● Extreme, two-toned hair color is never permitted

COURSE PROGRESS

● Students in all courses are expected to begin their coursework on Monday, June 17 (Red) or Tuesday, June 18 (Gray). Students in all courses should follow the schedule for assignment and exam completion set by their teachers. All courses have required Final Exams on Thursday, July 18 (Red) or Friday, July 19 (Gray).

● The Summer School Program ofcially ends on July 19. No assignments will be accepted and no exams will be administered after this date.

● Note for Credit Recovery: If students are taking two semesters of the same Credit Recovery course (e g , Algebra I Semester 1 and Algebra I Semester 2), they have two options: (a) They can either complete both semesters concurrently, staying on track with both, or (2) they can complete all of Semester 1 by the midterm date of July 3 and then proceed to complete all of Semester 2 by July 19.

GRADES

● Students will earn grades based on academic performance. Grade reports will be sent no later than the week of August 1st Students who are not in good nancial standing with the Summer School Ofce will have their grades withheld Transcripts for students who do not attend Mater Dei will be sent to the home address provided at the time of registration during the last week of July

● Note for Incoming Freshmen/HSP: Incoming Freshmen High School Preparatory (HSP) courses are taken for preparation only (no credit is earned) Progress Reports and grade marks will be provided for informational and placement purposes, but grades will not be entered onto the transcript or calculated into the student’s GPA.

● Note for Credit Advancement: Credit Advancement courses are structured to cover the same material as a traditional Semester or year but within a signicantly condensed time frame Expectations and prerequisites are clearly outlined, acknowledging the accelerated nature of the program. Students are challenged to absorb and apply knowledge at an expedited rate, necessitating a high level of dedication and academic rigor. Enrollment in these classes signies an acknowledgment of the academic challenge they present, offering students a chance to excel and progress in their educational journey

○ IMPORTANT: As of Summer 2024, auditing is no longer available for any courses. By enrolling in any Credit Advancement course, students are conrming their commitment to meeting the expectations of skills, dedication, and work ethic for the class No exceptions will be made to the Refund Policy for the Summer School Program

○ If a student chooses to drop a Credit Advancement class, the Summer School Ofce must be notied by Friday, July 12 by 4PM in order to not affect the transcript

■ The course will not be added to the transcript, and the student will be placed in the relevant/appropriate course for the Fall Semester.

■ Any student who earns a D/F in a Credit Advancement course will also be automatically dropped from the course, and the student will be placed in the relevant/appropriate course for the Fall Semester.

IPAD & TECHNOLOGY USE

All classes require a personal electronic device (e.g. laptop or tablet).

● Current Mater Dei students in good standing may continue using the iPads issued by the school

● Incoming Freshmen should either use their personal devices or request to borrow an iPad from the school for a nominal fee of $50

● Students in Art I Credit Advancement need a personal tablet with a stylus (e.g. iPad with Apple Pencil). Device should have a working webcam and microphone

All students–whether they use a school-issued device or their own personal device–must adhere to the guidelines outlined in Section 600 of the MDHS Parent/Student Handbook and the Summer School Policies regarding responsible and authorized usage.

ID CARD REQUIREMENT

For campus safety, all Summer School students will be required to wear a Mater Dei ID Card at all times The ID must:

● Show student’s full name

● Be worn around the neck with a lanyard

Acceptable IDs during Summer School:

● Current Mater Dei students (Grades 9-12): Mater Dei High School ID from the 2023-2024 school year with the Summer School sticker

● Incoming Freshmen & Non-Mater Dei Students: Temporary Summer School ID is required and must be purchased at registration ($10)

HEALTH & SAFETY GUIDELINES

All persons must adhere to the current safety guidelines while on the MDHS campus

REFUND POLICY

● The deadline for a FULL REFUND for dropped classes is June 14, 2024 at 11:59PM The Summer School Ofce must be notied in writing (e-mail: summerschool@materdei org) before this deadline

● The deadline for a PARTIAL REFUND (50% of the fees) for dropped classes is June 21, 2024 at 11:59PM (end of the rst week of Summer School) The Summer School Ofce must be notied in writing (e-mail: summerschool@materdei org) before this deadline

● NO REFUNDS WILL BE ISSUED AFTER JUNE 21. 2024.

● Refunds are NOT issued in the following circumstances: if a student fails to attend a registered course (no-show), if a course taken cannot apply to the student’s transcript, if a student is removed from a class due to excessive absences, or if a student does not achieve his/her desired grade.

● Workshops Only: If the student cannot attend the Workshop, notify the Summer School Ofce at summerschool@materdei org at least 48 hours prior to the start of the Workshop to receive a refund Refunds are not provided for no shows
