102 Mater Dei Lines of Communication
Students need to be accountable for their academic choices; therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to communicate with teachers and learn to advocate for themselves. While MDHS recognizes parents as the primary educators of their children, we ask that you support the high school journey of the student and only get involved when the student is unable to resolve the issue(s) on his/her own. Parents who have questions or concerns regarding classroom situations, academic progress, extra or co-curricular activities, or behavior problems are asked to follow these steps:
1. Contact the individual Teacher, Coach, Moderator, or Dean.
2. If there are further questions, speak with the Department Chair or Director.
3. If there are further academic questions, contact the Assistant Principal of Academic Services.
4. If there are further questions regarding discipline, contact the Assistant Principal, Student Life
5. If there are further questions regarding extra-curricular activities, contact the Executive Director of Activities.
6. If there are further questions regarding athletics, contact the Executive Director of Athletics.
7. Parents/Students then have the option to appeal to the Principal, whose decision, in consultation with the President, is final at the school site.
Any calls or inquiries made directly to Administrators will be referred through this MDHS communication system unless issues of legality or morality are involved
103 Aeries and Canvas
The primary academic platforms are Aeries and Canvas. Aeries is used to view official grades, and will also include attendance information, schedules, unofficial transcripts, and more. Canvas should be used to view all course content, including syllabi, assignments, presentations, other course documents, a calendar with upcoming due dates, and more. New students will receive access information for both Aeries and Canvas. New parents will receive access information for Aeries only. Returning students and their parents should use information previously provided to access these accounts. Parents are responsible for creating their own Canvas account following the directions provided on the Mater Dei website (click here).
104 Communication with Teachers
Teacher Email
Parents and students have access to teacher email addresses through the faculty directory located on the Mater Dei website. Parents and students may also contact teachers by email from both Aeries and Canvas. Teachers will make every attempt to respond to parent and student emails within forty-eight (48) hours, excluding nights, weekends, and holidays.
For clear communication, phone calls, TEAMS calls or meetings may be requested via email in advance. This allows teachers to schedule time effectively and provide the support needed

Teachers and other school staff may contact students by means of video conferencing for educational and extracurricular purposes such as school athletics, performing arts, and activities. Effective communication is essential to providing a safe and productive learning environment for our students. The Office of Communications is committed to keeping parents informed about events and activities as well as providing timely updates in the event of an emergency. Clear and timely communication is crucial in maintaining a strong partnership between the school and parents.
ParentSquare and StudentSquare are Mater Dei's official communication platforms. Accounts for parents and students are automatically generated for parents/guardians and students using the email address and phone number provided in Aeries. StudentSquare is linked to a Mater Dei student email address. Parents and students are strongly encouraged to download the ParentSquare and StudentSquare mobile app so they can set preferences for message delivery (email, text, and/or app notifications). Though not required, it is strongly recommended that students also download StudentSquare onto their personal mobile device.

As a Catholic high school committed to transparency and effective communication, we have established a media relations policy to ensure that accurate and appropriate information is shared with the public. We kindly ask that all media inquiries be forwarded to our Office of Communications at communications@materdei.org, which will work with school leadership to provide timely and accurate responses. We also ask that parents in partnership with our school refrain from directly contacting the media regarding school-related issues, as this may result in incomplete or inaccurate information being shared with the public. Mater Dei's student body is geographically vast - representing five counties and over 186 zip codes. While the school is not able to facilitate carpooling for families, we are happy to connect interested families to each other. To join the carpool directory, a current

200 STUDENT HEALTH
201 COVID-19
To promote the health and safety of all students, faculty, and staff, Mater Dei High School follows the Covid guidelines and requirements as directed by the Diocese of Orange. The school will continue to base its decisions on information and guidance provided by the Center for Disease Control and California Department of Public Health, as well as county health agencies. The updated guidance will be posted on the COVID page on the Mater Dei website.
202 Health Screenings
Students should be assessing themselves for any health-related symptoms prior to arriving at school daily. Students are encouraged to stay home if they do not feel well.
Any student who has a fever while on campus will be immediately isolated in a designated area and parents will be contacted to pick up their student. Students need to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to campus.
203 Hand Hygiene
Mater Dei will support healthy hygiene behaviors by providing adequate supplies, including soap, hand sanitizer, tissues, and disinfecting supplies. Students will be encouraged to practice hand hygiene along with respiratory etiquette, such as covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizer will be encouraged throughout the campus.
204 Cleaning & Disinfecting
Frequently touched surfaces, such as, but not limited to door handles, tables, desks will be cleaned and disinfected daily.
205 Communicable Disease Management
Mater Dei has designated our Director of Health Services to be responsible for responding to all communicable disease concerns. Should the need arise, this individual will coordinate reporting and tracking of outbreaks. Students and parents are expected to report to the Health Services Office by calling (714) 850-9520 or emailing schoolnurse@materdei.org if a student tests positive for any Communicable Disease.
206 Prescription and Over the Counter Medication
Students are not allowed to take any medications while at school unless supervised by the school nurse in the Health Services Office. All medicine must be turned into the school nurse along with a completed Diocese Medication Request Form. Refer to Section 805 Level II infraction (major). Failure to do so will be considered a Level II discipline infraction.
Epi-Pens and Inhalers can be carried by students however there must be a medication request form on file in the Health Services Office signed by the doctor.
207 Health Services Office
1. Except in an emergency, students are not admitted to the Health Services Office without a pass which indicates that they reported to class and are absent from the classroom with the teacher's permission. The school nurse will provide the student with a “Health Services Office Visit Slip” which documents the time of departure from the Health Services Office. The student will return to class and give the “Health Services Office Visit Slip” to their teacher.
2. Any student who must take medication (prescription and/or non-prescription) during school hours is required to contact the school nurse. All medications must be kept in the Health Services Office. The Diocese Medication Request Form must be completed and on file. The school does not furnish medication to the students per Diocesan school regulation #6013. The school nurse will contact the parents of those students who are not taking required medications.
3. Except in emergencies, School personnel shall not furnish medications to a student without a completed medication request form on file. This also applies to OTC drugs, such as Tylenol, Aspirin, Advil, Midol, Benadryl, etc. Students may bring medications to the Health Services Office in the original container in which it was purchased along with the completed medication request form from the Diocese of Orange. Parents must complete the medication request form which also requires a doctor’s signature. Medications will be stored in the Health Services Office for the school year. At the completion of the school year, students will need to pick up any remaining medications or they will be discarded.
4. In order to meet the specific health needs of students, it is very important that the Health Services Office be informed in writing of any high-risk medical conditions or situations which may affect the student's school performance.
5. To prevent the spread of contagious diseases, students should not come to school with a fever and/or rash of unknown origin. In case of student illness at school, the parents
are to provide transportation home. Students are not allowed to utilize a ride-share service when leaving school due to illness or injury.
6. All students must meet California State Immunization requirements before attending Mater Dei. A copy of an official immunization records is required. This record must include the doctor or clinic’s name, their signature or stamp, the name of each immunization and the date(s) they were administered. Students who have not met these requirements will not be allowed to attend classes unless they are on a schedule to obtain the required immunizations. This schedule needs to be provided to the Health Services Office with regular updates. Official immunization records should be uploaded to the school admin portal during the admission process or can be sent to the School Nurse email at schoolnurse@materdei.org
7. All students with a chronic health condition requiring daily medication/treatment should provide the Health Services Office with an individualized health maintenance kit to be used in the case of a disaster (3–5-day supply).
8. Sun protection cream will be available for students in the Health Services Office.
9. All students must be enrolled in Healthy Roster, the school’s electronic medical record system. Parents are responsible for keeping Healthy Roster updated and current with medications, chronic conditions, and emergency contacts.
300 ATTENDANCE
301 School Hours
1. Students may not leave the campus during school hours without permission. ALL OFFCAMPUS PERMITS MUST BE OBTAINED FROM THE DEANS’ OFFICE. No student will be permitted to leave campus without parent / guardian permission. Parents / guardians who are requesting their student to be released early from school must make their request by contacting the Attendance Office.
a. Please provide at 30 minutes notice for the Attendance Office to release your student.
b. All off campus requests must called in by the student’s parent / guardian.
c. An email will be sent to students instructing them to pick up their off campus permit from the Attendance Office.
d. Students must present their off campus permit to a School Safety Officer when leaving campus.
2. Students should be off the campus each day by 5:00 p.m., unless detained on authorized business or involved in organized school activities. All student gatherings on school premises must be arranged in advance through the Activities Office. A faculty moderator must be present.
302 Attendance
Student attendance is governed by the following information: The primary purpose of the Attendance Policy is to keep the parent/guardian informed as to the number of student absences in any class. The intent of this policy is to
improve student attendance. Sanctions may be imposed should this policy be abused, according to the provisions of this Parent-Student Handbook.
Class attendance has been proven to directly relate to positive class performance. Once a student reaches seven (7) absences (verified, unapproved, or unverified) in any class per semester it may result in consequences (see sections 303-306).
Reporting Absences
Please follow the following procedures when your student is absent from school for any reason.
Full Day / Partial Day
If a student will be absent for part or all of any school day(s), a parent or legal guardian must call the Attendance Office BEFORE 11:00 a.m. on the day of the absence. Emails and notes are not accepted.

303 Verified Absences & Exempt Absences
A verified absence is defined as an absence from school with the knowledge and consent of the parent/guardian or the proper school authority. Verified absences may be planned or unplanned. Verified absences will count toward your total of 7 absences that lead to consequences listed below (Section 305).

304 Mass Attendance
As a Catholic school, the Mass is our highest form of worship, and the Mass is an integral part of the overall education, formation, and experience of all MDHS students. Students attend monthly all-school Masses on campus, in both indoor and outdoor venues, where the entire student body, faculty, and staff, parents and friends gather, united in prayer and worship. These Masses offer beautiful music provided by our choral students, inspiring homilies, and a real experience of the Body of Christ.
Mass Attendance Policy
Participation in all-school Mass is essential for personal formation and building community at Mater Dei High School. This is as central to our curriculum as daily classes, fostering spiritual growth and unity among students. The repercussions for missing Masses within the year, stress importance for our shared journey of faith and fellowship.
• We recognize that life brings unexpected challenges. When a student must miss participation in the monthly All School Mass, please call the attendance office to verify and provide documentation to categorize the absence as verified or exempt.
• Missing 3 or more Masses will result in a meeting with school leadership. The meeting will be pastoral in nature, seeking to find the best support and encouragement for the student’s holistic growth.
• Any attendance consequences, and/or loss of privileges, including participation in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, will be determined and issued at this visit.
• Marian Mass is our All School Mass in May, celebrating our Patroness Mary, Mater Dei. This is a community celebration, and a required day of school. Students must attend classes and Mass on this day in May to participate in Prom that evening.
305 Truancies and Unverified Absences
A. Truancy is defined as an "unverified absence" from school without the knowledge and consent of the parent/guardian or the proper school authority, either for a whole day or any part of a day.
B. Cutting any class constitutes truancy and results in disciplinary action.
C. Truancy is a Level II infraction (see section 306 and 805 for consequences).
D. MATER DEI HIGH SCHOOL DOES NOT SANCTION OR SUPPORT A SENIOR DITCH DAY!
306 Consequences for Excessive Absences
Mater Dei High School conducts regular attendance reviews throughout the school year to identify students with chronic absenteeism. These reviews ensure that all students are on track to meet graduation requirements. Attendance reviews will be conducted regularly throughout the school year, the purpose of which is to identify students with chronic absenteeism and to ensure that all students are on track to fulfill MDHS graduation requirements. Based on a student’s attendance record, an individualized plan may be put into place to support students in improving their daily attendance and staying current with their academics.
1. On the 7th absence in any one course, a student is placed on an Attendance Contract and notified of the possible Academic and/or Disciplinary Consequences outlined below. The purpose of this contract is to collaborate with the student and their parents/guardians to develop a plan to improve their student’s daily attendance. The attendance contract will remain in effect until the end of the semester
2. Students who are habitually absent are subject to disciplinary consequences. On the 10th verified or unverified absence, the student is placed on an Administrator’s Contract. Students subject to an Administrator’s Contract are placed on Disciplinary Probation and are subject to Academic and/or Disciplinary consequences:
A. Excessive Absences: If a student accumulates (10) absences (verified and/or unverified absence) in a semester, he/she is subject to academic and disciplinary consequences laid out in Administrator’s Contract including:
i. Academic Consequences – Loss of 5% to grade in that specific class. ii. Disciplinary consequences which could include but are not limited to: Saturday Detentions, Work Details, Loss of Privileges, Ineligible to attend and/or participate in Dances/Events/Sports/Games/Performing Arts, and Removal from ASB.
B. Further Absences: For every additional (5) verified and/or unverified absence beyond the initial 10, the student will be subject to academic and disciplinary consequences
i. Academic Consequences – will lose an additional 5% to grade in that specific class. Depending on Administrator contract, Disciplinary consequences could multiply.
ii. Disciplinary consequences which could include but are not limited to: Saturday Detentions, Work Details, Loss of Privileges, Ineligible to attend and/or participate in Dances/Events/Sports/Games/Performing Arts, and Removal from ASB.
Medical/Trauma Absences: Absences due to verified medical illness or trauma may be exempt from this policy through an individualized support plan in congruence with Counseling.
Individualized Support: If a student’s attendance is a concern, an individualized plan may be created to support them in improving attendance and staying on track academically.
Students who fail to abide by the conditions of their Administrator’s Contract and/or who exceed fifteen (15) absences (verified or unverified) in any class per semester may result in a Disciplinary Review Council appearance which may result in the student’s withdrawal from the affected course and/or programs of Mater Dei High School.
307 Re-admittance after an Absence
A note written by the parent/guardian or phone call must be received before the student can be readmitted into classes. A written note by the parent/guardian or a parent phone call does not excuse an absence or a tardy. When a student has a medical or dental appointment, s/he needs to bring an original note on Doctor’s or Dentist’s stationery to verify the appointment. The note should include:
1. The name and grade of the student.
2. A reason for the absence.
3. A clear statement of the dates of absence.
4. The signature of one of the parents/guardians.
Absence and Make-Up Policy
In the case of an unplanned, verified absence, students are required to meet with the teacher upon their return to discuss any missed work and due dates. A reasonable amount of time will be given to the student to make up missed assignments and take missed quizzes and tests. The classroom teacher will determine this time frame in accordance with classroom policy and/or direction from department chair and school leadership.
Planned, verified absences are those due to an athletic event, performance, school trip, or college visit. In the case of planned absences, students are required to meet with the teacher before the planned absence to establish expectations and due dates before the trip. It is good practice for students to use office hour to meet with each teacher prior to the trip, and outline expectations in writing. All make-up work will be coordinated and scheduled with the classroom teacher before leaving on a planned trip/activity. A coach, moderator, or dean may ask for you to submit these expectations before leaving for your trip/activity. A make-up work form is available in the Dean’s Office and on Student Zone on Canvas.
Students with a Medical/Psychiatric Condition: If a student has a significant medical condition causing an extended absence, parents must notify the School Nurse, Attendance Office, and their student’s school counselor regarding the condition, and how it impacts the student academically, via a detailed physician letter. If a student has a condition (e.g., seizures, diabetes, etc.) that may present during the school day, please include a list of warning signs/symptoms for our teachers. In the case of an extended absence, the student’s school counselor will arrange with teachers to have class and homework assignments available from the Counseling Office.
Please note: parents requesting accommodations for their student must contact the Counseling Office or Center for Learning to determine if the request can be accommodated. Mater Dei High School does not provide independent study programs for students on a regular basis. However, in certain special circumstances, such as an extended absence, parents may request, in writing, to have a student placed on independent study (in cases of illness this request must be supported with a physician’s note). If the Administration allows a student to go on independent study, parents and the student will be required to sign an Independent Study Contract. Please note, Independent Study is allowed in special circumstances only.
308 Extra Curricular Attendance
Policy
Attendance at school on the day of an extra or co-curricular event is mandatory if a student wishes to attend or participate in an activity held the same day. To participate in or attend an extra or co-curricular event, a student must attend at least half of their classes on the day of the event. This applies to practices and/or games for athletes. It also applies to rehearsals and performances for students in the Performing Arts. Absences sanctioned by the school administration (funerals, medical appointments, school related activities, etc.) are exempt from this regulation
309 Tardiness
1. A student who is not in their assigned place ready to learn when the class bell rings at the start of class is considered tardy.
2. It is a reasonable expectation to require students to arrive to class on time. However, since Mater Dei is a commuter school, students will be allowed six (6) tardy warnings per semester. After the six (6) warnings have been exhausted, students will receive a Level I infraction for each additional infraction. Students who are continually tardy are considered in defiance of authority and will receive escalated consequences.
a. A written note by the parent/guardian or a parent phone call does not excuse a tardy.
b. A tardy student may be excused at the discretion of the Deans in extreme circumstances. (Oversleeping, traffic, etc. are not considered extreme circumstances)
3. Students will be placed on a Tardy Contract when they have accumulated ten (10) tardies in total, and are reset at the semester. The student’s parents/guardians will be notified by the student's Dean in writing and a parent conference may be requested.
a. The contract will stipulate consequences that may involve disciplinary action. Violation of this contract may result in a student being placed on an Administrator’s Contract.
b. It is the policy of Mater Dei High School that violation of the Administrator’s Contract may result in the student appearing before a Disciplinary Review Council.
310 Trip Request Policy
For students to obtain the most out of their educational experience, it is imperative that absences be held to a minimum. Therefore, we encourage all families to plan their vacations during the vacation time on the school calendar. We strongly discourage families from taking recreational trips during the school year.
Any family trip/college visit/obligation (which includes outside club tournaments or extracurricular activities) are planned absences and must be communicated to the Attendance Office. The trip will be classified as a verified absence. It is the responsibility of the student to make-up all in-class work, assignments and tests/quizzes that were missed during the trip according to school policy. Please Note: Students are allotted FIVE absences for school approved college visits. After five, each absence will count toward their total number of absences.
311 School Sanctioned Travel
For students to be eligible to participate in school-sanctioned domestic and/or international travel, they must be approved by the Business Office, School Counseling, and the Deans’ Office. Any student whose tuition is not up to date, is on a discipline contract, and/or not approved by School Counseling may become ineligible to participate in such trips. 312 Parental Responsibility When Parent / Guardian Are Out of Town
If a student's parent/guardian will be unavailable (i.e., out of town or on vacation), a signed written parental notice must be provided, in advance, to the Attendance Office. This notice will indicate the adults who are responsible for the student while the parent/guardian is unavailable. This information is needed for attendance purposes and for any emergency situations that may arise.
400 SAFETY & EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
401 Closed Campus
Mater Dei High school is a closed campus. If students become ill and need to go home, they must:
1. Go through the Health Services Office;
2. parents/guardians must be contacted; and
3. the student is signed out through the Attendance Office.
All visitors (including student visitors) must sign in to be on campus by School Safety.
1. Adult visitors must report to the Monarch Parking Lot Security Booth to sign in and be directed to the appropriate location. A visitor's pass will be issued from the School Safety Office.
2. In-class Visitors/Shadow Program for Prospective Students. Student visitors (prospective students) who wish to visit classes in session must be sponsored by a Mater Dei Student.
▪ The sponsor is responsible for the actions of their visitor while on campus. The "shadow program" is reserved for prospective students visiting the school prior to enrollment.
▪ The sponsor must receive permission from the Advancement Office three days in advance of the visit.
▪ Male visitors must wear collared shirt and nice slacks. Female visitors must wear a nice shirt and skirt or slacks.
▪ Visitors must be always accompanied by their sponsor
▪ On the day of the visit, visitors must go to the Advancement Office prior to the start of the school day.
▪ Sponsors are not permitted to switch visitors without prior permission from the Advancement Office at any time.
402 Earthquake Procedures
Mater Dei has developed an Emergency Preparedness Plan in case of an earthquake.
▪ Emergency Preparedness drills are held at least once a semester. During an earthquake or during an earthquake drill, students are to be silent and maintain a DUCK-COVERHOLD position under a desk/table, away from windows, and near an inside wall until the tremors have ceased and the teacher has directed evacuation to the field.
▪ Students are to remain on campus until everyone is accounted for, and an administrative decision has been made concerning the safety in releasing students. Students will be released through the Parental Communication/Reunion Gate Team on Monarch Way to those adults authorized on the student's Emergency Release Form.
▪ The Assistant Principal, Student Life will continually revise and update the school's Emergency Preparedness Plan to promote the safety and care of all students and staff.
Student School ID Cards – See Student Expectations and Regulations (Section 503)
▪ All students with a chronic health condition requiring daily medication/treatment should provide the Health Services Office with an individualized health maintenance kit to be used in the case of an emergency (3–5-day supply).
403 Emergency Protocols
Evacuation Drill
Students should move quickly and quietly to the designated area on campus, posted in all classrooms. Students are to remain under the supervision of their teacher until dismissed back to class by the Administrator in charge. A student initiating a false fire alarm will be subject to a Level III Disciplinary Consequences.
Active Shooter Protocols
Mater Dei has implemented active shooter protocols and works diligently to train faculty, staff, and students how to respond in the unlikely event of such a scenario.
Mater Dei has also partnered with the Santa Ana Police Department to help enhance overall campus safety, including the placement of video security cameras in strategic locations on campus.
404 Law Enforcement Officers on Campus
Mater Dei High School believes that the safety of our students and staff is essential to support student learning. In accordance with standards specified in law, school staff will cooperate with law enforcement officers who, in the course of their duty, seek information regarding individuals who have allegedly violated the law, those who have witnessed a violation, or those who may be victims of a crime.
The school Principal or their designee shall collaborate with local law enforcement agencies to enable law enforcement officers to carry out their duties on our campus, including, (when necessary), the questioning and/or apprehension of students in accordance with all applicable state and federal laws.
When a law enforcement officer states their intent to interview a student in connection with an alleged violation of the law, the principal or designee shall verify the credentials of the law enforcement officer, their official capacity, the legal authority under which the interview is to be conducted and provide an area suitable for the interview.
Whenever possible, the principal or designee will be present while the officer is interviewing the student (unless the student is 18 years of age or older and requests to speak with the officer alone) and take appropriate steps as soon as reasonably possible to notify the parent, guardian, or responsible relative of any student participating in such an interview, unless the safety of the child is at stake due to allegations of suspected child abuse.
405 Searches
Mater Dei representatives may search a student's car, person, personal items (e.g., backpacks, purses, etc.), electronic devices, lockers, and other belongings:
1. When there is reasonable suspicion for suspecting that the search will turn up evidence that the student has violated or is in violation of either the law or school rules;
2. in the course of an investigation; or
3. when the safety of the student or others is at issue in the sole discretion of Mater Dei High School.
406 Surveillance Camera Policy Notification
Purpose:
To ensure the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, and school property, Mater Dei High School utilizes surveillance cameras on campus. This policy serves to inform members of the public of the presence and use of these cameras and the reasons for their deployment.
Scope:
This policy applies to all individuals on Mater Dei High School property, including students, staff, parents, contractors, and visitors.
Policy Statement:
1. Use of Surveillance Cameras
Surveillance cameras are installed in strategic locations across the campus, including building entrances, hallways, parking lots, and other public areas. These cameras are used to deter and investigate unauthorized activities, ensure student and staff safety, and monitor for potential threats or emergencies.
2. Signage
Signs are clearly posted at campus entrances and in other visible locations to inform the public that surveillance cameras are in operation. The signs state: “This area is monitored by 24 hour security cameras.”
3. Privacy Considerations
Cameras are placed only in areas where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy. No surveillance is conducted in restrooms, locker rooms, or other private areas.
4. Access and Use of Footage
Surveillance footage is monitored and reviewed by authorized school personnel as needed. Recordings are stored securely and retained in accordance with school policy and applicable laws. Unauthorized access or use of surveillance footage is strictly prohibited.
5. Legal Compliance
The use of surveillance cameras complies with local, state, and federal laws, including laws related to privacy and student rights.

407 Smog Alerts
Mater Dei High School provides for the health and safety of all students during periods of air pollution according to state and local legislation, regulations of the California Air Resources Board and School policy. Air pollution forecasts and health alerts require different actions for abatement and health protection. The school nurse and/or athletic training staff will notify the Athletic Directors, Directors of Activities, and the Administration of air pollution episodes. Both abatement procedures and reduced physical activity will be implemented according to the California Air Resources Board regulations and the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
500 STUDENT EXPECTATIONS AND REGULATIONS
501 Student Regulations
The purpose of a student code of regulations is to provide the student body with a safe and orderly academic and social setting. These regulations should also enable our students to grow in their respect for each other, for the MDHS faculty, staff, and administration, and for the campus environment. Violation of these regulations will result in disciplinary action.
502 Student Security & Safety
1. Students must follow directions given by the Security/School Safety Staff.
2. Security cameras monitor much of the school for the safety of students and others however, students must still report any suspicious or dangerous activities to the School Safety Staff.
3. No in-line skates, roller blades of any kind, or skateboards are permitted on campus.
503 Student School ID Cards
Students must wear their current Mater Dei Student ID Card and the Mater Dei issued lanyard around their neck to be admitted to campus for the school day, and they must remain wearing them during the entire school day. Students must also bring their Mater Dei Student ID Card and/or a photograph of their ID Card on their cell phone to all Mater Dei functions that are held after school hours.
504 Conduct at Masses, Rallies, and Assemblies
▪ All students are required to attend all Assemblies, Rallies, and Mass or Prayer Services.
▪ Students are to proceed to the assembly in an orderly fashion accompanied by their teacher.
▪ No food, drink, or gum of any kind are permitted inside the gymnasium or assembly area.
▪ At Mass or Prayer Services:
▪ Silence as well as appropriate posture and decorum is to be observed as a sign of respect.
▪ Students are encouraged to participate fully in the liturgy or service.
▪ No eating, drinking, or gum chewing is allowed.
▪ No cell phones, earbuds, or iPads are permitted.
▪ At Assemblies:
▪ Maintain quiet at all formal assemblies.
▪ Stand on arrival and departure of guests.
▪ Give complete attention to the speaker.
▪ When students are to sit in the bleachers, they should follow the directions of the Deans and School Safety Staff.
▪ Sitting on the bleachers is allowed only when the bleachers are fully extended.
▪ Whistling and shouting are not an acceptable means of applause.
▪ No cell phones, earbuds or iPads are permitted.
▪ At Rallies:
▪ School pride and spirit is generated from the MDHS student body. Students should give enthusiastic cooperation and courteous attention to those who are conducting the rally.
▪ Slamming and/or pushing are not permitted at MDHS rallies or at any MDHS function or event.
▪ No cell phones, earbuds or iPads are permitted.
505 Conduct Off Campus
▪ At Athletic Events:
▪ Mater Dei student spectators, as well as our student athletes, are to conduct themselves in a spirit of Christian decency and courtesy as representatives of Mater Dei High School.
▪ Members of the opposing team and school, as well as the game officials, are to be treated with respect and are not to be subjected to any verbal or physical harassment.
▪ Stand with respect during the National Anthem and the singing of Mater Dei's Alma Mater and the opposing school's Alma Mater.
▪ Vulgar language, disruptive behavior, or throwing of objects will not be tolerated. Any behavior of this kind will result in expulsion from the game site and further disciplinary action from the Deans’ office.
▪ Mater Dei students are responsible for communicating acceptable student behavior regulations to any friends that they (the Mater Dei students) invite as guests to any Mater Dei athletic event.
▪ Students are to stay in the MD student rooting section area during the game. Mater Dei students are not permitted to visit the opposing school's rooting section to prevent any possible provocative activity.
▪ Students are to stay off the playing area before, during, and after the athletic contest.
▪ Students are to follow the direction of school safety staff and staff event personnel.
▪ All posters (must receive prior approval by the Deans’ Office) and crowd cheers must positively support Mater Dei. They must never put down or distract the opponent.
▪ Noisemakers, bells, horns, etc. are prohibited at all contests.
▪ Loitering:
Students are not to loiter before or after school on neighboring streets, parking lots, parking structure, or shopping centers.
▪ Littering:
Students are encouraged to take pride in their campus and in the community. Deposit all trash in proper containers.
▪ Bus Regulations:
▪ Students are subject to the authority of the bus driver whenever being transported to and from school.
▪ School policies regarding behavior, profanity, obscenity, damaging property, fighting, etc. are always in effect on the buses
▪ Refusal to obey these rules at the request of the drivers will result in the loss of riding privileges, confiscation of bus pass, and disciplinary action from the school and legal officials.
▪ Eating lunch on buses is not permissible at any time.
▪ Throwing any object from the bus windows and leaving trash or litter of any kind in the bus is not permitted.
506 Campus Trash Policy
▪ It is expected that students assist in always keeping the campus and classrooms neat and clean, especially the lunch area.
▪ Disregard for this policy will result in student offenders being required to clean the lunch area for a length of time or number of days determined by the Deans’ Office.
▪ Multiple violations will be elevated to a Level II infraction.
▪ Gum chewing is not permitted anywhere on the Mater Dei campus.
507 Classroom
▪ Students must be in the classroom and ready to learn when the final bell rings. A bell will ring to signify the end of the class. Dismissal is given by the teacher.
▪ All classes will begin or end with prayer.
▪ Students are to observe appropriate decorum during prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance during morning announcements.
▪ Students are responsible for the good condition of desks and of the classroom.
▪ Any collections of money (for any purpose) must be approved in writing by the schools’ Administrative Board.
▪ Students are not to handle classroom equipment, e.g., thermostat, blinds, windows, etc. without the teacher's permission.
▪ Eating or drinking, (except for water), is not allowed in the classroom without permission.
▪ Each student must have a Hall Pass and current year Mater Dei ID card worn around their neck when out of class.
▪ Students must leave their cell phones in the classroom when out of class. Students must use restrooms in the vicinity of their classroom or they could be considered truant.
▪ An office summons is considered a Hall Pass.
▪ Passes must be returned to the teacher who issued the pass. Students are allowed to use the restroom during class; however, they must return to class within a reasonable amount of time.
▪ If a student is feeling ill, s/he must report to the Health Services Office. Failure to do so may result in a truancy.
▪ Although electronic devices and air pods/beats/headphones, etc. are permitted on campus, they may not be used in the classrooms, the library, or other study areas unless a teacher gives permission.
▪ Laser pointers are not allowed at any time.
508 General Courtesy
▪ Students are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner reflecting positively on themselves, their parents/guardians, and their school. Courtesy is basically Christian charity requiring self-discipline. Respect marks Monarch behavior.
▪ Students should address the faculty/staff politely and in general with a spirit of helpfulness, courtesy, and respect.
▪ When addressing a faculty/staff member, use of the adult's first name is not appropriate. (The faculty/staff person's last name should be preceded by Mr., Miss, Mrs., Ms., Dr., Coach)
▪ Students should respect the privacy of the faculty lounge, mailroom, and faculty cafeteria.
▪ Vulgar language on campus is inappropriate.
▪ Once enrolled at Mater Dei, a student is expected to continue to always display positive Christian conduct, on and off campus.
▪ Conduct that is detrimental to the reputation of Mater Dei High School may result in disciplinary consequences.
509 Lockers
▪ Lockers are assigned by the Athletic Department, program coach / director by request only.
▪ Lockers are to be kept always locked, clean, and neat.
▪ Under no circumstances should a student reveal their locker combination to any other student, nor is a student to open another student's locker or remove another student's lock.
▪ Lockers in need of repair should be reported to the Athletic Department or student’s coach or program director.
▪ No decals or pasted items are allowed inside or outside the lockers.
▪ Students have no expectation of privacy in their lockers. Lockers are subject to search by the Deans’ Office, School Safety Office, or the school’s Administrative Board at any time with or without cause.
▪ Only school issued Master Locks are to be placed and locked on student lockers. School personnel will remove ALL other (non-school issued) locks.
510 Eating on Campus
▪ Food deliveries by outside parties are not allowed.
▪ Eating on campus will be restricted to the lunch area that is located inside and outside the LeVecke Center, in addition to other outdoor, open-air areas.
▪ To leave the lunch area, a student must have an authorized pass, and must have that pass checked by a faculty member, Lunch Monitor, Dean or School Safety Staff member.
▪ Orderly conduct is expected in the lunch area as well as in other areas of the school.
▪ Throwing or smearing food or drink on another student violates the respect one should have for another student. Such activity is a Level II infraction.
▪ Food is not permitted in the Mater Dei Chapel, Library, or Athletics Complex. Bottled water is permitted.
511 Parking Lot and Parking Structure
▪ Parking in the Mater Dei parking lot or parking structure is at the student’s own risk.
▪ Students who wish to take advantage of this privilege are to obtain a parking permit from the School Safety Office.
▪ Senior students may purchase a Reserved Senior parking spot in the Monarch Way lot through the Activities Office. This privilege allows them to decorate their assigned parking spot. All decorations are subject to approval and must be within the realm of Christian decency. All supplies used to decorate Reserved Senior spots must be provided by the student and be approved by the Facilities Department.
▪ All other students park in the parking structure.
▪ No car will be allowed in the parking lot or parking structure without its parking pass hanging from the vehicle’s inside rear-view mirror. The parking pass must remain hanging from the rear-view mirror while the vehicle is parked in the parking lot or parking structure. If the parking pass is not visible, the vehicle will not be allowed to
park in any lot or in the structure - no exceptions. Students who use fraudulent parking passes will lose the privilege of parking on campus and may receive additional disciplinary consequences.
▪ The parking lot and parking structure will be closed to all students during school hours. Students may not go to any car (their own or faculty/staff’s) during the school day Permission from a Dean, Director of School Safety, or an Administrator is necessary for anyone wishing to go to the parking lot or structure during school hours.
▪ There shall be no stickers or decals attached on any vehicle's windows or exterior depicting any signs of violence, vulgar language, or disrespect in reference to the Mater Dei community or society's best interest.
▪ A speed limit of five (5) M.P.H. will be always enforced in the parking lot and parking structure. Disregard of the speed limit or unsafe driving may result in loss of parking privileges and additional disciplinary consequences.
▪ Cars may not be left overnight in either the parking lot or parking structure without permission from the School Safety Office. Disregarding this may result in loss of parking privileges and/or car being towed.
▪ Students being dropped off or picked up before and after school should exit or enter their cars on Monarch Way.
▪ No drop-offs will be allowed in the Bristol Street parking lot.
▪ Students are required to obey all signage and School Safety Staff directions in the parking lot and parking structure.
▪ Students are not to park in the Edinger Lot located across the street from campus. With the addition of the new parking structure, the Edinger Lot will not be staffed by Mater Dei personnel.
▪ All unauthorized parking, failure to follow directions by the School Safety Staff, or parking lot violations will result in disciplinary action.
512 Posters and Flyers
▪ All posters and flyers must be approved and stamped by the Activities Office prior to being hung on the Mater Dei campus.
▪ Posters and flyers can only be hung in designated areas on campus. There is no hanging on any painted surface.
▪ Posters and flyers can never be hung on the Campus Ministry building, 100 Wing, inside of restrooms, and on campus murals.
▪ Posters and flyers can only be hung with red painters’ tape. No other tape is permitted.
▪ Any items not approved or hung inappropriately will be taken down and discarded.
▪ Once an event is over, it is the student’s / department’s responsibility to take down and properly discard all posters and flyers.
513 Media Release
Mater Dei High School, its approved partners, subcontractors, and affiliates regularly take photographs, film footage, and other electronic media of various school locations, activities, and events for use in, among other things, educational, community outreach, website, social
media, athletic, artistic, advancement, and advertising efforts and promotion. This media may be captured on or off campus and will not always be pre-announced to students. Some of the media, including but not limited to Monarch Television, may contain the name, image, likeness, and/or voice of MDHS students. By enrolling at Mater Dei High School, all students and their parents/guardians grant MDHS and its approved partners, subcontractors, and affiliates permission to use this media, agree that they will not be financially remunerated for this media usage, and release Mater Dei High School and its approved partners from any claims or liability arising from the use of this media.
514 Media Ownership
Students may, as part of a class or extracurricular activity, capture media related to Mater Dei and its students, staff or other personnel. Such media may include images, audio, video, prints, text, social media, and other digital or analog contents. In such instances, Mater Dei will have the exclusive and complete legal ownership of that media and the students may not transfer, provide or publish it to any entity besides Mater Dei for or without compensation.
515 School Facilities
No part of the campus or any of its facilities, including classrooms, gymnasium, halls, or outlying buildings may be used by any member of the staff, student body, or independent agencies outside of school time without the permission of the school’s Administrative Board. The use of all campus facilities must be requested by a member of the school’s staff.
516 Cell Phone, Smartwatch and Earbud / Headphone Policies
Mater Dei High School understands that there may be times when families need to contact their students during the school day. Therefore, students are permitted to have cell phones on campus. However, the following rules govern the use of cell phones, smartwatches and earbuds/headphones on campus during the school day:
▪ Cell phones, headphones, and earbuds must be powered off and stored in the student’s backpack from the first bell until the last bell of the day.
▪ Students are not permitted to wear smartwatches while taking exams. Students must place their smartwatch in their backpacks during exams.
▪ Students must leave their phones in the classroom if they need to leave class.
▪ Students are strictly prohibited from recording or photographing faculty, staff, or other students without explicit permission.
▪ In accordance with the school's search policies, Mater Dei representatives may, under certain circumstances and without prior notice, inspect students' cell phones and review any content contained within. Based on the outcome of a search, representatives may confiscate the device. Refusing to immediately hand over a cell phone when requested or failing to provide applicable log-in/password information is classified as a Level III infraction.
▪ Students may use their cell phones to read school sponsored QR codes and make electronic purchases using cashless applications (Apple pay, etc.) while on campus.
▪ Faculty and staff are authorized to confiscate phones, earbuds, or smartwatches if a student violates this policy. Confiscated items must be turned in to the Dean’s Office and will be returned to the student at the end of the school day. Students must sign a log to retrieve their belongings.
▪ Students experiencing a personal emergency may visit the Deans’ Office and receive permission to use their phone.
▪ Parents/guardians are asked not to call or text their students during the school day. Instead, please contact the Attendance Office to leave a message.
517 Disciplinary Actions Related to Cell phone, Smartwatch and Earbud/Headphone Policy Violations
Level I Infractions:
• Unauthorized use of cell phones, smartwatches, or earbuds/headphones during school hours.
• Unauthorized use of these devices after school hours in restricted areas such as the library or chapel.
Level II Infractions:
• Unauthorized use of a cell phone, earbuds or smartwatch during class, Mass, Rallies, or Assemblies.
Level III Infractions:
• Use of a cell phone to send messages that are considered harassing, threatening, or otherwise inappropriate.
• Possession of a cell phone or smartwatch during an exam will result in both disciplinary and academic consequences.
Consequences
• First offense (per semester): 1 hour detention, confiscation of device until the end of the school day.
• Second offense (per semester): 2 hours of detention, confiscation of device until the end of the school day.
• Third offense (per semester): 3-hour Saturday detention, student and parent meeting with Dean of Students and/or Assistant Principal of Student Life and the student must check in their phone/electronic device at the Dean’s Office upon arrival each day for the balance of the current semester or a time determined by the Dean of Students.
• Fourth offense (per semester): 4-hour Saturday detention, student placed on behavioral contract, and the student must check in their phone/electronic device at the Dean’s Office upon arrival each day for the balance of the current semester.
Habitual Offenders
Students who have their electronic devices confiscated three times during the semester will be subject to the following:
• The student must check in their phone/electronic device at the Dean’s Office upon arrival each day.
• Devices will be returned to the student at the end of the school day.
• This policy goes into effect immediately after the student’s third offense and will remain in place for the remainder of the semester.
518 DMV Compliance
Mater Dei students must abide by all California Vehicle Code and Department of Motor Vehicle regulations. These regulations include restrictions on students who have a provisional driver license. Among other things, such students may not transport passengers under 20 years old during the first twelve months of having their license unless accompanied by a guardian or licensed driver of at least 25 years of age. Regardless of age and license status, Mater Dei requires all students and their families to be familiar with, and adhere to, these regulations at all times, including whether students are drivers, passengers, are driving to or from school, and at every other time.
519 Recording of Classes for Online Use
In some cases, Mater Dei High School may need to record live lectures and class activities to post on Canvas. Such recordings may contain students’ names, images, likeness, and/or voices. The use of this media by the school comes with no compensation to the students or their families.
520 Eighteen-Year-Old Students
Students who have reached eighteen years of age must abide by the rules under which they were accepted. Some of these rules include, but are not limited to:
• Students must live under the supervision of their parents or legal guardians.
• Comply with the Attendance Policy including the requirement that parents or legal guardians must report student absences and/or make requests to the Attendance Office for off-campus permits if their student requires to leave campus before the conclusion of the school day.
• In the case where a student is placed on a behavioral contract, the student and their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) must both sign the contract. These contracts include:
o Attendance Contracts
o Dean’s Contracts
o Administrator’s Contracts, and
o Disciplinary Review Council Contracts
• Although they are 18 years old, these students are not authorized to make changes to their Aeries profile. Only parents/guardians are authorized to make changes in the Aeries portal
SELECTIVE SERVICE: A reminder to all male citizens, or aliens residing in the U.S.: You must register with the Selective Service within 30 days of your 18th birthday. You may register at any U.S. Post Office or on the Internet (www.sss.gov).
521 Library and Learning Commons
The Library and Learning Commons is open for student use daily. Students are welcome to use the space to study, work on group projects or assignments, read, or conduct research for class. Students must be respectful by speaking quietly so that other students are able to read or study without disruption. No food or drink, other than water, is allowed in the library at any time. Students who are disrespectful or not using the space appropriately will be asked to leave and may face additional consequences as appropriate.
Books and reference materials are available to students to check out from the library using their student ID card. The loan period for a library book is three (3) weeks. The charge for overdue materials is 50¢ per day for books and $2.00 per day for other resources, such as but not limited to loaner iPads. The replacement cost plus a processing fee of $5.00 is charged for any lost item.
Print stations are available in the library for student use and are free of charge. Air Print is disabled on the student iPad. Students should save a copy of their work to the cloud or email it to themselves, then print from a library computer or workstation.
The Ward Family Multimedia Center, Learning Commons Classroom, and library rotunda are available meeting spaces that can be reserved for use by clubs or other groups on campus. See members of the library staff for more information about reserving these spaces.
522 Name, Image and Likeness
Mater Dei High School abides by Federal, California and regional sanctioning laws related to students’ use of their names, images and likeness (“NIL”) for commercial purposes. It is the responsibility of the students and their families to ensure that they also abide by these laws so they do not incur penalties and possible loss of eligibilities and opportunities. Students may never participate in any commercial endorsement which includes the School’s name, logos, team uniforms, or other marks. Students and their families must ensure that no commercial endorsement connotes any School affiliation. If the School determines, in its sole discretion, that any NIL activities create a risk of confusion as to the School’s affiliation with such activities, the School may require the student to cease the activities and/or to clarify through written disclaimers or otherwise that the School is not affiliated with and does not endorse the activities. In the event of any questions or uncertainty, students and their families should contact the School at NIL@materdei.org.
600 ATHLETIC POLICIES
601 Participation in Athletics
Mater Dei High School encourages all students to participate in our athletic programs, regardless of their prior experience. It is important to recognize that participation in these programs is an opportunity for growth and development but does not ensure specific outcomes such as guaranteed playing time, team placement, or a position on the roster. Each athletic program is guided by its unique needs and requirements, and decisions regarding team composition and playing time are made by the coaching staff based on what is in the best interest of the team.
602 Program-Specific Requirements
While many of our athletic teams are structured as no-cut programs, allowing all interested students to participate, there are some programs that require tryouts and may necessitate cuts. Such determinations are made by the coaching staff to ensure the safety, competitiveness, and success of the program. These decisions are made with careful consideration and are based on the specific needs and goals of each team. In addition to team requirements, families of student-athletes are expected to fulfill all financial obligations associated with their athletic program, including any team fees or fundraising requirements. Student-athletes and their families must remain in good financial standing with the sports program to be eligible for participation. Failure to meet these obligations may result in the student-athlete being ineligible for practices, competitions, or team events.
603 Expectations of Student-Athletes
Student-athletes at Mater Dei High School are expected to demonstrate a commitment to their team and maintain good academic standing, consistent with the values of Honor, Glory, and Love that define our school community. It is essential for student-athletes to approach each practice and competition with a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to contribute to the team’s success. Roles and playing time are earned through dedication, performance, and adherence to team expectations as set forth by the coaching staff.
604 CIF-SS Code of Conduct and Sportsmanship
Mater Dei High School is a proud member of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIF-SS) and is committed to upholding the CIF-SS Code of Ethics and Sportsmanship. All student-athletes, coaches, and spectators must adhere to the following principles, as well as the rules and regulations outlined in the CIF-SS Blue Book:

• Respect for All Participants: All individuals involved in athletic competition, including opponents, officials, coaches, teammates, and spectators, must always be treated with respect. Unsportsmanlike conduct is unacceptable and may result in disciplinary action, including suspension or removal from the team.
• Honesty and Integrity: Student-athletes are expected to compete with honesty, to always give their best effort, and to adhere to the rules of the game. Any behavior that violates fair play will result in appropriate disciplinary measures.
• Positive Representation of the School: Student-athletes are representatives of Mater Dei High School and are expected to exhibit behavior that reflects positively on the school, both during and outside of competition. Actions that include taunting, the use of inappropriate language, or conduct intended to provoke an opponent are strictly prohibited.
• Commitment to Fair Play: Coaches, athletes, and spectators must uphold the principles of fair play as outlined by CIF-SS. Coaches are responsible for modeling and promoting ethical behavior for their athletes, while spectators are expected to demonstrate respect toward all participants.
• Consequences for Violations: Violations of the CIF-SS Code of Conduct will result in consequences as outlined by CIF-SS and Mater Dei High School policies. These consequences may include suspension from competition, removal from the team, and other disciplinary actions as deemed appropriate by school administration.
• Pursuing Victory with Honor: Mater Dei High School endorses the CIF-SS "Pursuing Victory with Honor" initiative, which promotes the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. All participants are expected to embody these values in every aspect of their involvement in athletics.
Mater Dei High School will enforce these expectations to ensure that all athletic events are conducted in a respectful, safe, and positive environment for all participants.
605 Expectations of Parents
Parents play a crucial role in the success of their student-athlete and the overall positive atmosphere of the Mater Dei High School athletic program. To support this mission, parents are expected to:
• Support the Student-Athlete Experience: Encourage your student-athlete to work hard, enjoy the process, and commit to their team. Recognize that participation in athletics is an opportunity for personal growth, character development, and teamwork.
• Respect Coaching Decisions: Understand that all decisions regarding team placement, playing time, strategy, and roles are made by the coaching staff with the overall success and development of the team in mind. Parents are required to support these decisions and help their student-athlete embrace their role.
• Positive Communication: Direct any concerns or questions regarding the athletic program through the appropriate channels of communication. Parents are required to follow the "Mater Dei Lines of Communication" outlined in the Parent-Student Handbook, ensuring that concerns are addressed respectfully and effectively.
• Model Good Sportsmanship: As representatives of Mater Dei High School, parents are expected to demonstrate respect towards officials, coaches, athletes, and spectators. Unsportsmanlike behavior, including negative comments, criticism, or disruptions, will not be tolerated and may result in removal from the event and potential restrictions
• Encourage Team Unity: Foster a supportive environment for all athletes, not just your own student. Positive encouragement for the entire team helps build a sense of community and belonging.
• Commitment to Values: Uphold the values of Honor, Glory, and Love in all interactions. Encourage your student-athlete to embody trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, and caring, as well as good citizenship. These values are integral to both Mater Dei High School and the CIF-SS "Pursuing Victory with Honor" initiative.
• Adhere to School and CIF-SS Policies: Parents must familiarize themselves with and respect the policies and expectations set forth by both Mater Dei High School and CIF-SS, understanding that athletic participation is a valuable opportunity and should be approached with the appropriate attitude.
606 CIF Eligibility and GPA Requirements
As a member school of the CIF-SS, Mater Dei High School requires all student-athletes to maintain academic eligibility in accordance with CIF-SS standards. Per the CIF-SS Blue Book, student-athletes must achieve a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale to be eligible to participate in athletics. Additionally, student-athletes must maintain satisfactory progress towards graduation as defined by Mater Dei High School policies. Any student-athlete falling below these academic standards will be deemed ineligible until the required GPA is restored.
607 School Attendance and Athletic Participation
Attendance at school on the day of an extra or co-curricular event is mandatory if a student wishes to attend or participate in an activity held the same day. To participate in or attend an extra or co-curricular event, or athletic practice, competition, and/or team event(s), a student must attend at least half of their classes on the day of the event. This applies to athletes and team managers of any athletic program.
700 HUMAN SEXUALITY IN THE CATHOLIC CONTEXT
An understanding of human sexuality in the Catholic context is essential to the growth and development of Mater Dei students. Recognizing the profound importance of this issue, Mater Dei dedicates time in Religion course each year to this topic.
701 Pregnancy Policy
As a Diocesan Catholic high school, Mater Dei affirms the sacredness of all human life. This teaching is expressed throughout our curriculum particularly in Religious Studies classes and Campus Ministry. If a student becomes pregnant out of marriage, we realize the situation is a very sensitive one. We will work with the student and her family so that the student will be
able to remain at Mater Dei. This will be done through the Office of the Executive Director of Campus Ministry as well as the School Nurse and Counseling Office.
Expectations are as follows:
▪ The student and the family will meet with the Executive Director of Campus Ministry. Based on the individual situation, the student will be encouraged to remain at the school. The School encourages continuing medical care as well as counseling for both the family and the student. If the father is a current student at Mater Dei, the school would expect the same for the father.
▪ At some point, based on a doctor's decision, the student may need to remain at home for a prolonged period. The school will continue to be supportive, and the student will be permitted to continue classes online.
702 Abortion
Mater Dei High School supports the teaching of the Catholic Church that abortion is the taking of an innocent human life and that human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. If the school learns that a student has had an abortion, the student and her parents will meet with the Executive Director of Campus Ministry. In addition, the school will provide compassionate counseling, however a student may be asked to leave the school. If another student has assisted in that decision, that student may be asked to leave the school as well.
703 Gender Identity
Diocesan schools partner with families to educate and form students consistent with the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Church, and so families are expected to live in accord with Gospel values, particularly regarding actions and behaviors that are public. Students and parents or legal guardians shall conduct themselves in accord with their Godgiven biological sex.
704 Safe Environment Curriculum
In June 2002, the bishops of the United Stated promised to protect children and young people to help prevent sexual abuse by committing to the implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. Article 12 of the Charter states: “Dioceses/eparchies will establish ‘safe environment’ programs. They will cooperate with parents, civil authorities, educations, and community organizations to provide education and training for children, youth, parents, ministers, educators, and others about ways to make and maintain a safe environment for children.”
To support the vision of our Bishops to provide a safe environment for students, Mater Dei, provides a Safe Environment curriculum through their religion classes. This curriculum covers the following topics: God’s gift of sexuality and its inherent responsibility, sexual harassment, child abuse, child sexual abuse, sexual exploration and violence in the media,
acquaintance/date rape, healthy and unhealthy relationships, teenage runaways and internet safety.
This curriculum has been developed by the Religion Department and has been approved by the Administrative Board, the Diocese of Orange Religious Education Office and the Department of Catholic Schools.
800 TECHNOLOGY USE POLICIES
801 Technology Philosophy & iPad Program
Mater Dei believes that the benefits to educators and students from Internet access, in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration, far exceed any disadvantages. The Internet Use policy is understood and approved including, without limitation, the sanctions for improper use. Students will be provided access to the Internet under the following policies established herein, effective immediately. This policy is subject to change to meet this rapidly changing area of education.
▪ As an innovative school, we recognize the importance of open exchange and learning between the school and its many constituents, and we recognize the phenomenon of user-generated digital content blogging, social media and networking as an important arena for interaction and collaboration. As our activities continue to reinforce the school’s mission and philosophy to the “development of the whole person - spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional and aesthetic”, it becomes increasingly important for us to share with the world the exciting things we are learning and doing, and to learn from and connect with others utilizing these new communications tools. Mater Dei’s Technology Use Policy offers information about how to do so effectively, safely, and within School guidelines.
▪ All use of the Internet must be in support of education and research consistent with the mission and philosophy of Mater Dei High School. All users of this service are expected to act in a responsible, ethical, moral, and legal manner.
▪ A user cannot expect privacy rights in the educational environment, and the school reserves all rights to review, monitor, prohibit, and regulate use in its sole discretion.
▪ Students will be provided an iPad with necessary accessories and technology accounts as needed to support the holistic educational experience and mission of the school. Use of these technologies is a privilege that carries responsibilities and behavioral expectations consistent with all other school rules and policies.
▪ The iPad and any provided accessories are sole property of Mater Dei High School. It is the responsibility of the student to maintain proper care and safekeeping of these items and return them to Mater Dei in good working condition.
802 Student Accounts
Each Mater Dei student will be provided with an email address to be used for all official school communication. This account should not be used for “non-academic” purposes without express permission, including but not limited to non-academic subscriptions and social media
accounts. Students are expected to check their email daily and use proper etiquette when emailing teachers or other school officials.
Additional accounts may be provided to students using the email address and/or student ID assigned as a username and/or password. These will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Student access to email and other accounts will terminate when a student graduates or withdraws from Mater Dei High School. It is the student’s sole responsibility to save important documents or other information to a personal account or a storage device before leaving Mater Dei High School.
Mater Dei Tech Hub
Students who need assistance with their school technology, including their iPad or any accounts, should visit the Tech Hub located within the Library. The Tech Hub is open daily during library hours. There are also a limited amount of loaner devices available for students to checkout for daily use (iPad, calculator, etc.).

804 Social Media Passwords and Login Information
Students must provide their private usernames, passwords, and all other login information for all social media to Mater Dei High School if requested to do so as part of any Mater Dei High School investigation. This applies whether the student accesses the social media through the student’s private electronic devices, through those provided to students by Mater Dei High School, or from another source. Mater Dei High School has the right to monitor and review students’ social media content as part of any investigation.
805 Acceptable Use Policy
General Purpose and Intent of the iPad Authorized Use Policy
Members of the Mater Dei community will use all iPads, along with all other electronic communication and computing devices, in a responsible, ethical, and legal manner at all times.
Specific iPad Authorized Use Policy
1. Any viewing, sharing or transmission of material from an iPad containing inappropriate content, offensive language, derogatory rumors/gossip, or other content not in keeping
with Mater Dei’s mission or philosophy is strictly prohibited except as expressly authorized by Mater Dei in connection with approved curricula and course materials.
2. Any iPad use, whether utilizing the Mater Dei network, which could pose a risk of physical or mental harm to anyone is prohibited. Any iPad use, whether utilizing the Mater Dei network, which could pose a risk of property loss is also prohibited.
3. Any attempt to connect externally through an iPad to an internet network, hotspot, or VPN while on Mater Dei's campus is prohibited.
4. Students will not share their usernames, passwords, addresses, or other personal information on the Internet without the authorization of a parent or Mater Dei representative.
5. Students have no privacy rights in the use of their iPad. All iPad activity, including communications, Internet history, or other uses, are subject to monitoring by Mater Dei. Mater Dei representatives may inspect and, if deemed necessary, confiscate any student’s iPad at any time without prior notice.
6. Students may store their own photographs and music on their iPads only if they conform to standards of good taste and Christian decency as solely determined by Mater Dei.
7. Certain Internet materials may not be copied or reproduced without the permission of the author or other right holder. It is the student’s responsibility to respect and adhere to all copyright, trademark, and other intellectual rights and trade secrets laws.
8. The Mater Dei network may not be accessed without authorization. This includes, but is not limited to, accessing the network using any account other than a student’s own. Doing so will be considered a Level II or Level III infraction.
9. Before using their iPads, Mater Dei strongly encourages students to consider whether their electronic communications and other iPad uses may be regarded as offensive, hurtful, or otherwise inappropriate by others.
10. Students are not permitted to make purchases directly using their Federated Managed Apple ID, provided by Mater Dei. Required eResources, including paid apps and books, will be provided through the Technology Fee. All assets associated with the Federated Managed Apple ID remain the property of Mater Dei High School after the student graduates or leaves Mater Dei.
11. Students are responsible for the care and safekeeping of their iPad and any other provided accessories. If an iPad is damaged, the student must immediately notify Mater Dei and follow steps to repair or replace the damaged item(s).
12. Students are required to use the case provided by Mater Dei to protect the iPad. No other cover is acceptable. If an iPad is damaged while not in the case (or in a different case), the student is responsible for the cost of repairing the iPad.
13. Students must immediately report damage or loss, including theft, of an iPad or other provided accessory to Mater Dei. The student will be required to provide a statement describing the circumstances under which the iPad (and/or accessory) was lost. In cases of theft, a police report must be filed immediately in the city where the incident occurred, and a copy must be provided to Mater Dei within five (5) days of the theft. Once an official report is available, it must also be provided to Mater Dei. Thereafter, the full cost of replacement is charged to the student.
14. If an iPad or other provided accessory is damaged through no fault of the student (determined solely by Mater Dei), the item will be replaced at no cost to the student for the first incident only. Thereafter, a $50 repair fee or the full cost of replacement is charged, whichever is less. Damage due to negligence is not covered and Mater Dei will not replace or repair the item without full pre-payment from the student (this includes using an iPad case that is not approved).
15. Any loss or excessive damage to the iPad (outside reasonable wear and tear), regardless of the cause, will be the strict financial responsibility of the students and parents. Any iPad that is lost, stolen, or damaged beyond repair will incur a replacement fee equivalent to the total cost of the iPad, its case, and AppleCare, in addition to the *Non-refundable iPad Technology Use Fee already paid for the current year.
16. Students are not permitted to repair, alter, modify, or replace the iPad or any other provided accessories without express authorization from Mater Dei (this includes the addition of new apps and/or other software).
17. Proper use, care and safekeeping of iPads includes, but is not limited to, the following:
• Using only the assigned Managed Apple ID account on the iPad (no personal accounts may be used)
• Bringing the iPad and necessary accessories to school each day
• Charging the iPad battery daily
• Securing the iPad (i.e., do not leave iPad unattended or in unlocked locker/car or any other unsupervised area)
• Maintaining the iPad in protective carrying case (i.e., backpack) when not in use
• Using soft cloth to clean screen; do not use cleansers of any type
• Keeping your iPad functioning properly by installing updates as they become available
18. iPads are the property of Mater Dei High School and are not available for purchase.
19. This iPad Authorized Use Policy always applies to Mater Dei students, whether the students are on campus, as Mater Dei students are always school representatives.
20. Violations of any portion of this iPad Authorized Use Policy may result in a hearing before the Disciplinary Review Council, which may impose any disciplinary measure against the student up to and including expulsion. Additionally, Mater Dei may refuse to issue grades or transcripts to, and may withhold graduation privileges from, any student who violates any portion of this iPad Authorized Use Policy including but not limited to failing to return an iPad to Mater Dei at the conclusion of enrollment at the school or when requested by the school and failing to reimburse the school for an iPad’s or iPad charger’s damage or loss (including theft).
21. In consideration for receiving the iPad from Mater Dei, each student and his or her parent or legal guardian agrees not to sue and hereby releases, waives, discharges, holds harmless, indemnifies, and defends Mater Dei High School and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, as well as their respective employees, personnel, staff, volunteers, agents, directors, affiliates, and representatives, from any and all liability, losses, damages, claims, actions, and causes of action of every nature for any and all
known or unknown, foreseen or unforeseen, bodily or personal injuries, property damage, or other loss, whether claimed by the student, parent, legal representative, or any third party, relating in any way to the use of the iPad furnished by Mater Dei to the student.

806 Prohibited Activities
Prohibited Activities Include Without Limitation:
1. Using the network for non-educational activities without school consent.
2. Using the network for commercial advertising or financial gain.
3. Using the network to lobby for votes.
4. Using the network to access a file that contains inappropriate material including materials deemed to be pornographic or obscene.
5. Sending or receiving messages that are hurtful, racist, offensive, inflammatory, sexist, or obscene.
6. Planting a computer virus on any school device or otherwise attempting to disrupt the school network/internet connectivity.
7. Sending a message with someone else's name on it.
8. Sending or receiving a message that is inconsistent with the school's behavior expectations including messages that taunt or defame other schools.
9. Any use of the network to facilitate illegal activity.
10. Construction and use of websites/electronic services that defame students, school personnel or other entities deemed inappropriate by the Administration (such infractions will be handled as a level II or level III infraction).
11. Intentionally seeking information on, obtaining copies of, or modifying files, other data or passwords belonging to other users and misrepresenting other users on the network.
12. Invading the privacy of others.
13. Wastefully using finite resources.
14. Activity not in keeping with the philosophy of Mater Dei High School and the Primary Policy of Use.
Inappropriate use of the Internet will be handled as a disciplinary consequence as a level II or III infraction.

8. Remember that you always represent Mater Dei, even in your social media usage. Your social media content is not private and can be viewed by Mater Dei administrators, with repercussions for violations of school rules or policies.

1. Post overly personal information like cell phone numbers, address, class schedule, etc. Uninvited viewers of Social Media pages have stalked students when they post overly personal information.
2. Post pictures of your friends without their permission. It may be considered a legitimate invasion of their privacy, or may jeopardize their chances for a job, or their scholarships.
3. Post information or conduct activities that may violate local, state, or federal laws, and regulations.
4. Think that you are safe from any harm or consequences for the content of your page.
5. Forget that once you post something, it may live forever, even if you take it down.
6. Think that Facebook is the only website of concern. These same principles apply to Twitter, SnapChat, Instagram, etc. and any other Social Media sites.
7. Be afraid to get creative with your profile. Have fun and express yourself legally and responsibly. There are plenty of ways you can create a positive self-image. You can impress your peers and community members and abide by all School policies, and laws!

901 Philosophy of the Dress Code
Mater Dei High School believes that a student's appearance has an impact on their attitude and behavior at school. Respect for the school community, for the students themselves, and for what the school is giving the students is manifested by an attitude of "dressing up" rather than "dressing down" for school.
The dress code is also designed to help students develop a sense of Christian modesty and decorum. It should educate them in what is appropriate dress for the proper time and place. It is the responsibility of the Administration, the Deans, the Faculty, and the Staff of Mater Dei to regulate against and prevent the adoption of exaggerated or faddish hairstyles, clothing, jewelry, or any accessories that tend to draw attention to the wearer.
The school does NOT see this as an infringement on personal fashion desires, for the student has many off-campus hours to dress as he or she wishes. However, attending Mater Dei is a privilege, and the school expects its students to conform to a consistent and acceptable dress code.
As a sign of mutual respect, as one way of creating an environment of excellence, and of providing an opportunity for the individual student to make a personal commitment to what the school is about, the following dress code has been developed and updated.

902 Dress Code Enforcement Policy
Violations of the Mater Dei Dress Code are considered Level 1 infractions. Multiple Violations will be elevated to a Level II infraction. See Section 1004 for Consequences.

903 Choosing Clothing and Accessories that Aligns with Christian Decency for any Mater Dei Event and on the Mater Dei Campus
At Mater Dei, we encourage all students to dress in a way that reflects Christian values of modesty, respect, and neatness. To support a positive and respectful community, please follow these guidelines:
• Wear clothing that aligns with Christian decency, avoiding any writing or images that do not reflect these values, refraining from wearing anything that glorifies violence, alcohol and/or drug use, or is political in nature.
• Choose hemlines and shorts that are mid-thigh to maintain a modest appearance; short shorts, short dresses, short skirts, cut-offs, athletic shorts, or beach-style shorts are not appropriate.
• Keep your clothing clean, neat, and in good condition selecting clothing that fits well and is tailored appropriately.
• Wear socks and stockings that complement modesty standards; over-the-knee socks and fishnet stockings are not permitted.
• Facial, tongue, or body piercings are not permitted to maintain a respectful and professional appearance.
• Earrings are reserved for girls; boys are asked to respect this guideline.
• Maintain natural hair colors, avoiding extreme or two-toned styles to foster a unified and respectful environment.

Vicki Marsha Skirts
▪ Only Vicki Marsha skirts can be worn.

▪ Wearing Pajama, or other pants under skirts is not allowed to maintain a polished look.
▪ It is recommended that students wear modesty shorts under the uniform skirts.

At Mater Dei, we want all students to feel comfortable and show pride in our community while dressing in a way that reflects respect, modesty, and school spirit at extracurricular events such as athletic games and after-school activities. We appreciate all students’ efforts to honor these guidelines, helping us maintain a respectful and welcoming community at every event.
Please note, students who do not meet these expectations may be kindly asked to adjust their attire or, if needed, may not be admitted to the event.
Our Deans and Administration are dedicated to supporting these standards and will make fair decisions regarding dress and personal appearance to uphold the values of Mater Dei. Thank you for dressing with pride and respect for our community!
For All Students:
• Spirit wear shirts and sweatshirts are encouraged! Please choose red, gray, or white tops that proudly display the Mater Dei name or logo.
• Long pants or jeans in blue, khaki, red, gray, or black, that are clean and in good condition, are great options for these events.
• Female shorts should be at least mid-thigh length and well maintained to ensure a neat and respectful look.
• Male students are permitted to wear black boardshorts or black golf shorts that have at least a 9-inch inseam.
• Female students may wear all black leggings that are solid, without cutouts, patterns, or sheer materials.
• Tank tops are acceptable when the straps are at least two finger widths wide, promoting modesty and comfort.
• T-shirts with a modest neckline can be layered with a tank top underneath for added coverage.
• Please select clothing that is neither sheer nor revealing; tube tops and low-cut tops are not part of the dress code. To maintain Christian modesty, students should avoid showing excessive midriffs or cleavage.
• Hats that feature the Mater Dei logo, or hats that conform with Christian Decency may be worn, provided they are worn properly (not backwards) and are free from political messages.
• Clothing should be free from excessive holes, tears, or slits above mid-thigh to keep a polished appearance.
• All slogans on clothing should reflect Christian decency and avoid political content.
908 Spirit Dress FOR ALL STUDENTS
• Students may wear school uniform pants, uniform shorts, skirts (girls only), long blue, khaki, red, gray, or black denim jeans, pants, or shorts in good condition.
• Any shirts or sweatshirts worn by students in spirit dress must be red, gray, or white and include the Mater Dei name or logo.
• Vicki Marsha uniform shirts may be worn on spirit dress days.
• Clothing may not have excessive holes or holes, tears, cuts, slits, above mid-thigh.
• No sheer clothing.
• Tight clothing, shirts which expose the midriff, and low-cut tops are unacceptable.

Special Days or Themed Dress
There are occasions when the dress code is relaxed in recognition of a school event or activity such as spirit weeks or themed dress days. On such occasions students are notified and given specific guidelines on how to dress. Students are expected to demonstrate personal responsibility by dressing modestly and in accordance with Christian decency. There are many aspects of the dress and grooming code that are in effect on relaxed dress days such as shoes, skirt length, images on clothing, and Christian decency.
The school reserves the right to regulate fads or fashions that reflect negatively on the school and/or person. Interpretation and final decision in matters pertaining to dress and personal appearance are at the sole discretion of the Deans and Administration.

Philosophy of Discipline
When a student manifests difficulty in living within the guidelines of the Mater Dei community, the school deals with these issues constructively and restoratively through its policies, Administration, Deans, Counseling, Faculty, Disciplinary Council, and other dynamics within the school. We address the good of the student and their family, as well as the good of the entire community. Through the implementation of restorative practices within our discipline system, we aim to further develop the whole person by educating our students on conflict resolution to transform the school community.
The disciplinary procedures that follow are an attempt to address issues which sometimes occur both on and off campus which disrupt the educational process or are otherwise incompatible with the values and mission of Mater Dei. Mater Dei students are to conduct themselves in a spirit of Christian decency and courtesy as representatives of Mater Dei High School. As such, Mater Dei students who attend off campus functions as representatives of Mater Dei High School (this includes, but is not limited to, another school’s dance, athletic event, etc.) will also be subject to the disciplinary procedures that follow.
We have selected the more relevant disciplinary issues that may present themselves and have ranked them into three categories: Level I, II and III infractions including their potential consequences. These disciplinary issues and measures, however, are not exhaustive. For example, notwithstanding anything else stated in these disciplinary sections, the school may, at times and at its sole discretion, judge that a student can no longer remain at Mater Dei High School because their presence is detrimental to the good of the student, of the school, and/or of the Mater Dei community. In such cases, the Principal may ask the parent to withdraw the student, may directly disenroll the student, or expel the student, all without a disciplinary hearing. Additionally, the school may prescribe additional restorative measures for encouraging the student to grow in maturity, integrity, and responsibility such as asking the student to enter counseling, requiring the student to work for the community s/he has offended, or participating in a mediated meeting between them and other students involved in the incident. Alternatively, a student may also be suspended from school if s/he is deemed to be of detriment or danger to the school community.
In order for the Deans’ Office to obtain all proper documentation when dealing with student discipline issues, students may be required to complete a Student Incident Report.
1002 Parental Attitude and Cooperation
Mater Dei stresses civility, respect, and courtesy in every aspect of its students’ interactions with others. The same is expected of the parents of those students when interacting with school staff, personnel, or at school activities. Under normal circumstances, a child is not to be deprived of a Catholic education on grounds relating to the attitude of the parent. Nevertheless, it is recognized that a situation could arise in which the uncooperative, unprofessional, or destructive attitude of a parent might so diminish the effectiveness of the school in acting in loco parentis that continuation of the student or enrollment of a student in the school may be impossible.
Parents/guardians may respectfully express their concerns about the school operation, the school’s various academic, co-curricular programs, and extracurricular programs, and the school’s staff. However, they may not do so in a manner that is discourteous, uncivil, abusive, rumor-driven, disruptive, threatening, harassing, or hostile. This applies equally to all school settings and interactions including all communications with the school and at all school activities. In case this policy is violated, the decision of the Principal regarding the suitability for a student’s continued enrollment or acceptance into the school will be final.
Additionally, Mater Dei reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to end communication with, and restrict access to Mater Dei facilities to a particular parent/guardian and communicate only with the other parent/guardian, or none at all (Refer to Diocesan Handbook reference 4180a).
1003 Harassment
Diocesan Policy Against Harassment
The Diocese of Orange and Mater Dei High School confirm the dignity of each person. It is our policy to provide an educational environment in which everyone is treated with respect. It is the responsibility of the student, administrator, teacher, parent, staff, aides, or volunteers to conduct themselves in a manner which contributes to a positive school environment.
▪ Any form of harassment whether sexual, verbal, written, physical, visual, or environmental is strictly forbidden.
▪ Any person who violates this policy will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination or expulsion.
Definition of Harassment
Harassment occurs when an individual is subjected to treatment that is hostile, offensive, intimidating, or any willful act that may cause injury (mental or physical) because of the individual's race, creed, color, national origin, ethnicity, physical ability, health condition, disability, gender, or religion, etc.
Confidentiality
Every effort shall be made to protect the privacy of parties involved in any complaint. Files pertaining to complaints are confidential and will be discussed only when necessary for the investigation and/or resolution of the matter.
Retaliation
The Diocese of Orange and Mater Dei forbid retaliation against anyone who reports harassment or who participates in the investigation of such a report.
1004 Level I Infractions (Minor)
Level I infractions will result in a combination of Level I consequences. One (1) demerit is assigned for each infraction.
Level I infractions include:
1. Dress/Grooming Code Violations
2. Tardies/Attendance violations
3. Littering
4. Chewing gum
5. Not wearing a Student I.D. Card and the Mater Dei issued lanyard around their neck
6. Minor disregard of student regulations or school policies
7. Failed Consequences
8. Unauthorized use of cellular phones, earbuds, or any electronic audio/visual device during school hours
9. Unauthorized use or downloading of unauthorized apps on iPad
10. Dishonest behavior that includes cheating on any homework assignment or minor project
1005 Level II Infractions (Major)
Level II infractions result in a combination of Level II consequences. Two (2) demerits are assigned for each infraction.
Level II infractions include:
1. Multiple or flagrant Level I infractions
2. Classroom disruption
3. Dishonest behavior that includes falsified excuses/signatures/phone messages
4. Plagiarism (Copying another's work)
5. Cheating on any quiz or test
6. Failure to turn in prescription medication to the Director of Health Services
7. Truancy (class or school)
8. Defiance or disrespect for authority and/or school code
9. Possession of pornographic materials
10. Language, gestures, or behavior that is immoral, vulgar, profane, or obscene
11. Gambling on or near school property or at any school function.
12. Intimidation, harassment, hostile action, verbal altercation, hazing, or any willful act that may cause injury (mental or physical) to another person.
13. Chronic failure to serve a failed consequence, detention, or complete assigned consequences for Level I or II infractions. Students may be suspended from Extra-Curricular Activities until disciplinary responsibilities have been fulfilled.
14. Theft, invasion of privacy, possession of stolen property, or destruction of another's property.
15. Throwing food or drink or smearing another's uniform or person.
16. Possession of hate literature, use of hate language including that, which is racial, ethnic, or religious in nature.
17. Construction and use of web sites that defame students, school personnel, or other entities as deemed inappropriate by the Mater Dei School Administration.
18. Inappropriate use of the Internet.
19. Inappropriate use of social media (See section 801)
20. Violation of Internet, Technology and/or iPad Use Policy.
21. Major disregard of student regulations.
22. Conspiracy in any of the above infractions.
1006 Level III Infractions (Serious)
Level III infractions will result in a combination of Level III consequences. Three (3) demerits are assigned for each infraction. Any level III infraction may result in the appearance of the student and parent(s)/guardian(s) before the Disciplinary Review Council.
Level III infractions include:
1. Multiple, flagrant, or serious Level II infractions.
2. Immoral or scandalous conduct (any speech, writing, or action contrary to Christian decency) on or near school property, at any school function, or offcampus at any time
3. Defiance of authority and/or school code of a serious nature.
4. Theft or destruction of another's property of a serious nature.
5. The throwing of food and/or drink (for example, but not limited to, the throwing of food and/or drink which results in a “food fight”).
6. Possession/use of any weapon including but not limited to knives, firearms, (real/imitation) or pepper spray
7. Use or possession of tobacco or tobacco products on or near school property or at any school function
8. Possessing, furnishing, using, distributing, selling, purchasing, transporting, or being under the influence of any banned substance (as defined in Section 901) (without prescription) or intoxicant (including alcohol or drug paraphernalia) on or near school property or at any school function
9. Possessing, furnishing, using, distributing, selling, purchasing drug paraphernalia on or near school property or at any school function.
10. Use or possession of e-cigarettes, electronic vaporizers, or similar paraphernalia (whether capable of being used for nicotine, water, or other substances) on or near the school property or at any school function
11. Fighting on or near school property or at any school function.
12. Selling, distributing, or giving one's prescription medication to another student
13. Lighting fires, and/or possessing, using, or threatening to use any incendiary or explosive devices such as flares, firecrackers, M-80's and Cherry Bombs and Smoke Bombs, or Stink Devices.
14. Direct involvement as principal or accessory in any malicious mischief.
15. Direct involvement as principal or accessory in any crime, including a nonviolent felony, a misdemeanor, or multiple misdemeanors, or where a student arrest or arraignment takes place.
16. Any sexual or aggravated assault on or near school property, at any school function or off-campus at any time.
17. The use of any extreme hate language or the distribution of any hate literature including that which is racial, ethnic, or religious in nature.
18. Discriminatory Harassment
1. Discriminatory harassment or hate speech includes conduct directed against a person or group because of their race, color, national origin, accent, ethnicity, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, medical condition, or disability, having the purpose or effect of creating an offensive or hostile environment for that person or group.
2. Discriminatory harassment can include, but is not limited to, the following forms: speech, gestures, graphics, writings, or physical actions including graffiti, the use of targeted slurs, and exchanges in person and over social media.

20. Serious harassment, hazing, or any willful act that may cause injury (mental or physical) to another person.

Consequences for Vaping/E-Cigarette And Nicotine related Infractions
To combat the current vaping/e-cigarette epidemic present in high schools around the country, Mater Dei High School has implemented the following protocols for instances when it has been determined that a student is in possession of, or using e-cigarettes or nicotine pouches on campus or school property, regardless of the substance contained within the device.
▪ Students will receive an automatic suspension pending investigation and determination of the substance within the vape/e-cigarette device.
▪ Students may be placed on an Administrator’s Contract or go before a Disciplinary Review Council (DRC), as determined by the circumstances of the incident, determination of the substance, and the decision of the school’s Administration.
▪ Students may be required to complete an educational curriculum on the dangers of vaping/e-cigarettes and nicotine.

1007 Discipline Contracts
1. Dean’s Contract
Student is placed on a behavior contract which could include but is not limited to: Saturday Detentions, Work Details, Loss of Privileges, Ineligibility to Attend Dances/Events/Sports/Games/Performing Arts. Students who earn a Deans’ Contract have incurred multiple infractions of one kind (i.e., excessive tardies, dress infractions, class disruptions) and high demerits. The primary purpose of a Deans’ Contract is to initiate a dialogue with and engage the student’s parents/guardians to prevent the student from going on disciplinary probation.
2. Administrator’s Contract
Student is placed on Discipline Probation which could include but is not limited to: Saturday Detentions, Work Details, Loss of Privileges, Ineligibility to attend and/or participate in Dances/Events/Sports/Games/Performing Arts, Counseling, Drug/Alcohol Testing, and Removal from ASB. Students who are placed on an Administrator’s Contract are usually suspended from school because of a Level II or Level III infraction but may not have gone before a DRC.
3. DRC Contract
Student is placed on Strict Discipline Probation which could include but is not limited to: Saturday Detentions, Work Details, Loss of Privileges, Ineligibility to attend and/or participate in Dances/Events/Sports/Games/Performing Arts, Counseling, Drug/Alcohol Testing, and Removal from ASB. Students on a DRC contract may become ineligible to participate in school-sanctioned travel. See Section 310 for further information.
4. Academic Integrity Contract
Students that have violated the Academic Integrity Policy will be placed on an Academic Integrity Contract, which could include but is not limited to: Saturday Detentions, Work Details, Loss of Privileges, Ineligibility to attend Dances/Events/Sports Games, Counseling, Zero on the assignment, quiz, test, project, paper, or semester exam, etc.
5. Attendance Contract
Student is placed on an Attendance Contract which could include but is not limited to: Academic Consequences, Saturday Detentions, Work Details, Loss of Privileges, Ineligibility to attend and/or participate in Dances/Events/Sports Games/Performing
Arts. Students who earn an Attendance Contract have incurred an excessive number of absences and/or are frequently tardy. The primary purpose of an Attendance Contract is to initiate a dialogue with and engage the student’s parents/guardians to help improve their student’s attendance and ensure academic success.
1008 Zero Tolerance Policy
Mater Dei High School has adopted a zero-tolerance policy for certain behaviors deemed a danger to the Mater Dei community. Any student directly involved in, associated with, or conspiring in any of the following will be expelled from Mater Dei High School:
▪ Gang affiliation
▪ Bringing a firearm or weapon onto or near the Mater Dei campus or to any Mater Dei function or activity
▪ Selling or providing drugs on or near the Mater Dei campus or at any Mater Dei function or activity or to any Mater Dei student(s) at any location
▪ Serious threat of physical and/or sexual violence.
The Principal in consultation with the President makes final determination on the use of the Zero Tolerance policy at Mater Dei High School.
1009 Detention Detention
▪ Detention days and times will be provided by the Deans’ Office. A student must report to detention before the due date given/assigned
▪ If a student misses a detention, s/he will accrue additional consequences.
▪ When a student misses subsequent detentions, consequences will be increased.
▪ Student must be in full dress code.
▪ Students are not allowed to use any electronic device.
▪ Detention is NOT a study hall; it is a disciplinary consequence.
Lunch Work Detail
▪ Lunch work detail involves cleaning up the lunch area. Students assigned to lunch work detail must report to a Dean 15 minutes before the end of their lunch period.
Saturday Detention
▪ On an as needed basis, Saturday detention will be assigned.
▪ Students attending Saturday Detention are required to wear their school uniforms and student ID.
1010 Suspension
Students who, because of their behavior and attitude have forfeited the privilege of being part of the community, are suspended from school.
For the duration of their suspension, students are under the jurisdiction of their parents and may not come on the school grounds or attend or participate in any school activities or
functions. Suspended students are responsible to make up all schoolwork or activities and assignments missed while on suspension. This work must be made up within a maximum of five (5) days from the end of their suspension.
1011 Demerit System
Demerits are assigned to students when they commit infractions of the Discipline Code, and they are cumulative for the full school year. Students start each school year with no demerits. Periodic reviews are made of student discipline files. Those with high numbers are warned that misconduct must be corrected. Students who continue to misbehave after being warned are placed on contract.
1012 Disciplinary Probation
Students are placed on Disciplinary Probation or Strict Disciplinary Probation when they have committed a serious infraction or have an excessive number of demerits. This probation status means a student is placed on an Administrator’s Contract or DRC Contract. Parents will be notified by the Assistant Principal, Student Life and a parent conference will be requested. Student’s discipline probation status will be reviewed each semester. In addition, the student and their parents may be required to appear before the Disciplinary Review Council. Violation of this contract may result in withdrawal or expulsion. While a student is on Disciplinary Probation or Strict Disciplinary Probation, s/he may not run for a school office. If a student who holds a school office is placed on Disciplinary Probation or Strict Disciplinary Probation, the student may lose their office.
1013 Disciplinary Review Council (DRC)
The Disciplinary Review Council is a private process designed for the Deans, students, and their families to address serious disciplinary matters. The ordinary day-to-day discipline of the school is under the supervision of the Dean of Students. It is the purpose of the Council to provide the student and their family an opportunity to discuss disciplinary matters while obtaining the proper result for each student.
Disciplinary Review Council Membership
The Disciplinary Review Council will consist of the following members:
▪ The Assistant Principal, Student Life
▪ Administrators
▪ Faculty and Staff Members
▪ The members will sit on the Council on a randomly selected rotational basis throughout the year. There are six administrators and 15 faculty/staff members eligible to sit on the committee. The Principal appoints five eligible faculty/staff members, and the Mater Dei Faculty/Staff elects the remaining ten faculty/staff members.
A Disciplinary Review Council member must have been at the school for at least one year. To maintain the integrity of the DRC Hearing and protect the privacy of the panel members, family members and/or students are not allowed to record or film the DRC hearing by any means. Furthermore, the notes and other writings of the Council are private and will not be shared with the students or their families.
Function of the Disciplinary Review Council
The Disciplinary Review Council will:
1. Provide the student and family an opportunity to discuss the disciplinary issues and surrounding circumstances
2. Advise the Principal
3. Review students considered for withdrawal or expulsion
4. Review the conduct of students with a high number of demerits and those on Disciplinary Probation each semester
Disciplinary Review Council Procedures
1. The Council provides students and their families with the opportunity to discuss disciplinary issues when there is a possibility of expulsion.
2. The student, their parent(s) or guardian(s), and a Dean are the only people allowed to sit in at hearings. The Council will excuse the student and their parents/guardians during the period of deliberation. Any notes or transcripts from the hearings or deliberations will not be shared with students or parents/guardians.
3. After the hearing, the Council votes at the conclusion of the deliberation phase. Its recommendation is passed onto the Principal through the Assistant Principal, Student Life.
4. The Principal, in consultation with the President, makes the final school site decision, which is communicated to the parents by the Assistant Principal of Student Life.
5. If a student is asked to withdraw, parents/guardians may appeal the Council’s decision but must do so in writing to the Principal within five (5) business days.
6. At the end of each semester, the Council will consider all those students who have a high number of demerits and those on Disciplinary Probation. The Council will recommend to the Principal those students who may not be permitted to return and those who may be accepted back under Disciplinary Probation on a Contract. In such cases, the parents/guardians may request a final review of their case. The Principal's decision, in consultation with the President, is final.
1014 Student Athletes and Discipline
If a student athlete is asked to withdraw or otherwise withdraws on their own because of a violation of the school’s discipline code, their standing as an athlete with CIF may be negatively impacted. In such instances, when a student athlete transfers to another school, CIF requires
that we report disciplinary issues, which may require the student athlete to miss a year of athletic participation.
1100 SCHOOL BANNED SUBSTANCES AND ALCOHOL TESTING PROGRAM
1101 School Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program
Mater Dei High School has instituted a school-wide banned substances and alcohol testing program. The banned substances include, but are not limited to, all illegal drugs, marijuana and THC products, tobacco, nicotine, and alcohol. The program is intended as a proactive approach to a drug and alcohol- free school. Students using illegal drugs, marijuana and THC products, tobacco, nicotine, and alcohol, as well as e-cigarettes and vaporizers pose a threat to their own health and safety, as well as to that of other students, staff, and community. The purpose of this program is threefold:
1. To provide for the health and safety of all students.
2. To reduce the effects of peer pressure by providing a legitimate reason for students to refuse to use banned substances and alcohol.
3. To encourage students who use banned substances or alcohol to participate in drug and alcohol treatment programs.
The program is designed to create a safe, substance abuse free environment for students and to assist them in getting help when needed. The full policy may be reviewed at the school in the Main Office, Counseling Offices, Deans' Offices, or by contacting the Assistant Principal of Student Life. Mater Dei High School understands that a testing program is not a final solution for the risks and dangers inherent with drug and alcohol abuse. Rather, Mater Dei High School desires to establish a program to protect students through education, observation, testing, rehabilitation, and where appropriate and necessary, sanctions for repeated violations of this policy.
Mater Dei High School tests students in three ways. First, Mater Dei High School conducts mandatory random drug, marijuana, nicotine, tobacco, and alcohol tests of all students. Second, Mater Dei High School tests selected students whenever it has reasonable suspicion of drug, marijuana, nicotine, tobacco, or alcohol use by those students. Third, Mater Dei High School tests students, with or without reasonable suspicion, in cases of an accident or possible criminal conduct.
Reasonable suspicion is defined as sufficient reason for basis in fact to give rise to a reasonable belief that a student has banned substances and/or alcohol in their blood system. Reasonable suspicion can be based on some of, but not limited to, the following circumstances:
1. Behavioral conduct that causes reasonable suspicion to believe that there is the presence of banned substances and/or alcohol in an individual's body fluids based
upon specific personal observations concerning behavior, speech, actions, and/or bodily odors.
2. Other reasonable circumstances and information, which would indicate that an individual is utilizing banned substances and/or alcohol.
The Mater Dei High School Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program is a year-round program. Students participating in summer activities (including but not limited to summer school, athletics, camps, etc.) can be selected to participate in the testing program. Any student in possession of an e-cigarette or electronic vaporizer will have this item confiscated. The item will then be tested to determine the substance within it.
Student Selection for Random Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program
Each month on days determined by the Principal or their designee, individual students will be randomly selected from the student body at large to provide samples for the Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program. The Principal or the designated individual shall take all reasonable steps to assure the integrity, confidentiality, and random nature of the selection process, including, but not necessarily limited to, assuring that the person drawing names has no way of knowingly choosing or failing to choose particular students for the testing, assuring that the identity of students drawn for testing is not known to those involved in the selection process. Students may be drug tested if they are truant or out of class for an extended period of time.
Sample Collection
Samples will be collected at an appropriate time on the same day the student is selected for random testing, or possibly on subsequent days in case of specific student testing, or if the student is absent on that day, on the day of the student's return to school. Samples will be collected by a certified outside collection agency who will maintain a confidential chain of custody for each specimen.
When the laboratory analyzes a specimen as positive for one or more of the selected banned substances and/or alcohol, the results may be forwarded to the Medical Review Officer for a final determination. For those students with a documented medical history demonstrating the need for regular use of a prescription drug or over-the-counter medication, a verification signed by a licensed medical practitioner will be required. Students who refuse to provide verification and test positive will be subject to the actions specified below for "positive tests".
Students who are found to have used a banned substance including marijuana, THC products, nicotine, tobacco, and/or alcohol, refuse to be promptly tested or re-tested as requested, fail to arrive for testing, falsify or contaminate a sample, or otherwise violate a provision of the Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program will be dealt with according to the sanctions of the Mater Dei High School Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program and the Mater Dei High School Parent/Student Handbook.
Alteration or attempted alteration of drug testing samples or sabotage or attempted sabotage to the integrity of the Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program will be considered a Level III infraction under the Mater Dei Parent/Student Handbook. Positive determinations will be reported to the Principal or their designee and the student's parent/guardian. All test results are considered confidential information and will be handled accordingly by these individuals but may in certain cases be disclosed to law enforcement authorities.
Students who attempt to falsify or adulterate samples/results will receive disciplinary consequences at level III and it will be considered a positive test.
First Positive Test for Banned Substances Other Than Nicotine
When a student is identified with a positive determination, the student must:
1. Participate in a substance abuse counseling program, including at least three (3) visits, consisting of one-on-one wellness counseling. This counseling must be provided by a licensed therapist or a counselor with a marriage, family, and child certification (MFCC).
2. Complete a school-assigned online drug/alcohol education course at the expense of the parent/guardian. Students must provide a certificate of completion once they have completed the course.
3. The student will be tested a minimum of two (2) times a month. These additional tests will be at the expense of the parent/guardian. The progress of these students will be reviewed each semester.
4. At the conclusion of the wellness counseling, written documentation by a therapist, counselor or psychologist will be needed and turned into the Assistant Principal, Student Life.
Second Positive Test for Banned Substances Other Than Nicotine
Should a student be identified with a second positive determination, the student will be referred to the Disciplinary Review Council where the appropriateness of their continued enrollment in Mater Dei High School will be determined. The second positive test consequence applies over a four-year period or if the student is enrolled in Mater Dei High School.
Third Positive Test for Banned Substances Other Than Nicotine
Should a student be identified with a third positive determination, the student may be asked to withdraw from Mater Dei High School. These procedures will be followed if a student is enrolled in Mater Dei High School. The three positive test consequences apply over a four-year period or if a student is enrolled in Mater Dei High School.
As with all other policies pertaining to requested withdrawal, the parent/guardian may appeal the decision to the Principal whose decision, in consultation with the President, is final.
First Positive Test for Nicotine
When a student is identified with a positive determination for nicotine, the student will meet with the Assistant Principal Student Life who will notify the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s) of the positive test.
In addition, the student must:
1. Complete a school-assigned online vaping/tobacco/nicotine awareness education course at the expense of the parent/guardian. Students must provide a copy of the course certificate of completion to the Assistant Principal of Student Life by the identified deadline.
2. The student will be re-tested withing a 60-day period. The additional test will be at the expense of the parent(s)/guardian(s). The results of the test will be shared with the student and his/her parents and/or guardians.
Subsequent Positive Test for Nicotine
Should a student be identified with a subsequent positive determination for nicotine, the student, and his/her parent(s)/guardian(s) will be notified so the family can develop a nicotine cessation plan which is best suited for their student and his or her health and wellbeing. The school’s administration will review a student’s progress at the semester and will decide if the student may remain at Mater Dei High School.
1102 General Authorization and Consent
Each student understands that as a condition of their enrollment at Mater Dei High School, s/he agrees to be tested pursuant to the Mater Dei High School Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program. Each student agrees to accept and abide by the standards, rules, and regulations set forth by Mater Dei High School.
Each student specifically consents to provide a sample for the purposes of analysis for the presence of substances considered illegal for use by minors and those controlled by the State of California or the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and to permit any other tests ordinarily used to determine my use of drugs, nicotine and/or alcohol.
Each student specifically authorizes the testing laboratory to release the results of all tests used to determine their use of drugs, nicotine, and/or alcohol to the Medical Review Officer. Each student specifically authorizes the testing laboratory to release all results to their parents/guardians and to the Principal of Mater Dei High School and to the Assistant Principal, Student Life.
Each student specifically authorizes the Medical Review Officer to release the results of its determination of their use of drugs, nicotine, and/or alcohol to their parents/guardians and to the Principal of Mater Dei High School and such persons as s/he might designate.
If a student is found to have used an illegal drug, banned substance such as nicotine, and/or alcohol, fail to promptly report for testing, refuse to be tested or re-tested as requested, falsify or contaminate a sample, attempt to falsify or contaminate a sample, or otherwise violate a
provision of these policies and procedures, the student agrees to the application of sanctions outlined in the Mater Dei High School Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program.
Furthermore, each student and their families, representatives, and agents, fully and forever release and discharge the Medical Review Officer, Mater Dei High School, and the Diocese of Orange, including their respective employees, staff, volunteers, agents, and representatives, from any and all liability, losses, damages, claims, actions, and causes of action of every nature, whether claimed by the student, the student’s family and assigns, or any third party, for any and all known or unknown, foreseen or unforeseen, damage relating in any way to the student’s participation or failure to participate in the Mater Dei High School Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program.
Prior to signing this Handbook, each student states that the student has had the opportunity to review the applicable policies and procedures, to have them reviewed by legal counsel, and to have any questions about the Banned Substances and Alcohol Testing Program answered to their satisfaction by an official of Mater Dei High School.
By signing the Handbook Acknowledgement Form, the student and parent(s)/legal guardian(s) agree to the foregoing.
1103 Breathalyzer
In addition to the searches provided for in this Handbook, the Deans, School Safety Staff, or Administrators reserve the right to breathalyze students where it is deemed that there is reasonable suspicion that a student may be under the influence of alcohol. Separately, for the safety of all in attendance, all students may be breathalyzed, without reasonable suspicion, at school dances, athletic activities, and other school events.
1200 ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS AND GRADES
1201 Academic Information
Mater Dei places great emphasis on education. Learning not only develops God-given talents, but also helps to make Faith more living, conscious, and active. Faith and religious values are integrated into all that is taught in our community. Students here at Mater Dei are directed to the pursuit of further education after graduation. Therefore, emphasis is placed upon subjects and skills that will render a student capable of college and university study.
It will sometimes happen that a student may not be able to handle this intellectual challenge. Lack of ability, a decline in motivation, desire to leave the school, personal problems, and other reasons have emerged as obstacles to doing well. If an issue reaches the point where the school decides it is no longer in the best interest of the student to continue education at Mater Dei, this will be brought to the attention of the parents/guardians.
The purpose of these procedures is to encourage the best education possible for our students, either here at Mater Dei or in that environment where the learning of the student will flourish.
Repeating "D" and "F" Grades
If a student earns a "D" or "F" semester grade, the student must make up the "F" to meet graduation requirements; "D" grades should be repeated to improve the student's grade point average and may be required to qualify for the next course level as outlined in the Mater Dei Course Catalog. Colleges usually do not accept “D” grades. The better grade is always used when computing the MD GPA. Students should repeat the class(es) during summer school following the "D" or "F" grade(s). Students must consult their MD school counselor to review their remediation plan. They are encouraged to enroll in Mater Dei's Summer School or MD Credit Recovery Program, which is available during the school year in several subjects.
If a student chooses to attend a high school or online program other than MDHS for remediation, they must consult their MD school counselor and complete the Non-MD Course Request Form. Students must ensure that the school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) or a comparable Regional Accrediting Organization that is approved by Mater Dei, that the course is UC-Approved and for student athletes, also NCAA approved. If the school or program is not approved, it will not be accepted for ay purpose and will not go on the transcript. It will be the student’s responsibility to have an official transcript sent from the program to MDHS’s Registrar by August 1. Additionally, it is the student’s responsibility to send official transcripts separately to any institutions requiring them.
Grade Petitioning
If a student wishes to petition a grade, s/he may do so by initiating contact with the appropriate teacher. The teacher will meet with the student to discuss their concerns and review any specific assignments. The teacher will exercise their professional judgment to grant or deny the student’s petition on an assignment. If the petition is regarding a course grade, the
teacher may confer with the department chair and/or the Assistant Principal of Academic Services to make a final decision. Requests to petition a grade on an individual assignment, quiz, test, or project must be made within two (2) weeks of the grade being posted to Aeries. Petition requests beyond these two (2) weeks will not be considered.
1202 Academic Reports
Each semester, there are three academic reports:
1. Progress Report
▪ Approximately nine weeks into the semester mid-term progress reports are available to all parents and students.
2. Progress Check
▪ Approximately fourteen weeks into each semester progress checks, which are a grade check leading into finals, are available to all parents and students.
3. Semester Report Card
▪ Approximately 2 weeks after 1st semester finals and 1 week after second semester finals Report Cards are available to all parents and students.
All three Academic Reports are available through the Aeries Parent or Student Portals under Report Card History. Parents are encouraged to access their student’s current grades on the web-based version of Aeries.
1203 Semester Exams
Exams will be given in all subjects at the end of each semester (see school calendar for each subject and date of exam). All students are required to be present for semester exams. Semester exam worth may vary by department. Some departments may have a project semester assessment which takes the place of the semester exam. Teachers will communicate whether they will have a semester exam or a project semester assessment.
1204 Requests to Reschedule Semester Exams
On occasion there may be a student who needs to take an examination earlier than scheduled. When this need arises, the following is required:
1. Parent/Guardian must submit a request, in writing, to the Attendance Office.
2. Once the student receives approval, a $50 fee (per exam) is submitted to the Attendance Office.
3. Attendance office issues “Approved Absence Make-Up Work Request” form, which the student brings to each teacher for signature.
4. Student and Teacher reschedule the exam.
1205 Transcripts
Student transcript requests are processed through Parchment.com, a third-party company. Parchment allows students, parents, and alumni to request transcripts through Secure
Transcript. Transcripts requested online are sent securely to the colleges, universities, or scholarship funds selected. Requests are tracked online, and an email notification is sent when the request is approved, and again when the transcript is mailed (or delivered electronically, based on the delivery preference selected).
1206 Class Schedule Changes
Course Requests are viewable in the Student Aeries Portal the last week of school. Students are recommended for courses based on meeting course prerequisites as outlined in the MDHS Course Catalog.
▪ For schedule changes, contact the student’s assigned School Counselor. Schedule changes may require approval by the following: Parents, Department Chairs, Assistant Principal of Academic Services. All teachers are qualified to teach in their subject area; therefore, no teacher or block changes can be accommodated.
▪ Any student who is allowed to drop a yearlong class after the third week of school and before the first progress report will receive a "W" on their transcript.
▪ Any student who drops a yearlong class after the first or third progress report will receive a "WF" on their transcript.

Classroom grades are based on teachers’ evaluations, and grades may be affected by student absences.
Academic Probation
If a student receives a failure at the semester grading period or receives below a 2.0 average, s/he will be placed automatically on Academic Probation. A student on Academic Probation must show improvement the following semester grading period, or s/he will become ineligible to participate in athletic or non-athletic activities. Such students may also be subject to dismissal. Students who are on Academic Probation will be required to meet with their School Counselor and parent(s)/guardian to ensure an academic plan is put in place for the student to recover any grades and/or receive academic support available.
Failures
If a student fails a semester period of work, s/he must make up that course or a comparable class in the summer school that directly follows the completion of the year in which s/he received the failure. No student is allowed to return to Mater Dei unless s/he has made up the failure in the required time. Two failures at the semester are cause for dismissal from Mater Dei. Two failures in Religious Studies classes may result in a student's dismissal. Students at Mater Dei may not repeat failed classes during the school year. Summer School and MD Credit Recovery is available.

1208 Computation of G.P.A.
In computing the Grade Point Average (G.P.A.)
▪ 4 points are given for each A
▪ 3 points are given for each B
▪ 2 points are given for each C

▪ Physical Education and related courses receive no points for Academic G.P.A.
▪ The total points are then divided by the number of subjects taken.
▪ Honors and Advanced Placement classes receive one extra point for grades of A, B, or C.
1209 Homework
Homework is an integral part of a student's success at Mater Dei High School. Students are required to complete the homework in a quality manner and to submit it to their teachers by the assigned deadlines; not doing so may dramatically affect their grade.
To help students with time management, we encourage students to use an Academic Planner, available in the Mater Dei Campus Store or on the iPad. Students are required to keep a record of assignments, and we recommend that parents check their student's planner to ensure that assignments are recorded and completed.
1210 Office Hour
Mater Dei is a college preparatory high school. As such, it is our responsibility to prepare students to be successful once they graduate and attend a college or university, where they will be encouraged to meet with their professors during their office hours. Thus, Mater Dei has implemented two 40-minute Office Hour periods on most Mondays and Thursdays at the end of the day. Office Hour is an academic period during which students are expected, encouraged, and allowed to:
▪ Make up tests or quizzes due to absences
▪ Seek additional academic assistance from teachers
▪ Study independently
▪ Collaborate with classmates on group projects
▪ Pray, meditate, or reflect
▪ Complete and/or work ahead on homework assignments
Teachers may request students to attend office hour and every effort must be made to attend. Proper student communication and arrangements must be made with teachers, coaches, moderators, carpool, etc. about attending office hour.
1211 Academic Integrity
Students at Mater Dei High School are expected to complete all assignments with honesty and integrity. Classwork should be a true reflection of the student’s ability and effort. Any academic dishonesty will result in both academic and disciplinary penalties. Forms of Academic Dishonesty include, but are not limited to:
Plagiarism/AI Technology
Use of another’s words or ideas without proper citation (whether it be improper copying from academic sources or copying the work of another) or the use of AI to replace authentic student learning Teachers may use plagiarism detection services, such as turnitin.com, to check student assignments for originality.
Cheating
Use of improper or unauthorized materials or study aids including “cheat sheets'' or electronic devices to supplement academic performance. At no time are cell phones or smartwatches allowed out during an exam.
Facilitating Dishonesty
Knowingly allowing one’s work to be copied by another or doing the work of another, allowing another student to obtain information from one’s own, or someone else’s exam, paper, and/or homework, or doing the work of another. Posting any part of any assignment on a social media site or sending any part of any assignment to another student. The intent of the person posting/sending the assignment is irrelevant –whether he/she wants to “provide an example”, “help a friend”, “show how something is done”, or similar, are never acceptable explanations.
Inappropriate Collaboration
Working together on a project or assignment without the instructor’s knowledge or permission.
Other Academic Misconduct
Tampering with grades, tests, or other class materials; stealing or tampering with the work of another student.
1212 Consequences for Academic Dishonesty
To preserve the academic integrity of educational technology platforms, students are prohibited from sharing their log-in credentials with other students. Sharing such information may result in disciplinary consequences as outlined in section 804-806.
Homework Assignments or Minor Assignments
Violations of the Academic Integrity Policy as it pertains to homework and/or minor assignments will be handled by the individual teacher and documented by the Deans’ Office. In addition, such violations may result in the following consequences.
1. First offense of academic dishonesty on homework in any class, the following consequences include, but are not limited to:
a. Zero on the assignment
b. Parent notification by the teacher
c. Reported to the Deans’ Office
2. Second offense of academic dishonesty on homework in any class, the following consequences include, but are not limited to:
a. Zero on the assignment
b. Parent notification by the teacher
c. Reported to the Deans’ Office
d. 4-hour Saturday detention
e. Parent conference with the Deans and student placed on an Academic Integrity Contract
3. Third offense of academic dishonesty on homework in any class, the following consequences include, but are not limited to:
a. Zero on the assignment
b. Parent notification by the teacher
c. Reported to the Deans’ Office
d. Suspension from school
e. Disciplinary meeting with the Assistant Principal OR a hearing with the Disciplinary Review Council to decide if the student will be asked to withdraw from Mater Dei High School
f. Consequences TBD if student is permitted to return to Mater Dei High School
Academic Integrity on Exams
Quizzes, tests, and semester exams require an especially high level of attention to integrity. Actions that in non-testing environments would not normally be considered cheating are considered a violation in testing situations. All violations will result in a student receiving a zero on the quiz, test, or semester exam and the student may also receive disciplinary consequences.
Academic dishonesty on quizzes, tests, and/or exams includes, but is not limited to:
▪ Communication (without teacher permission) to any student for any reason during the testing period. Borrowing a pen or asking about time, etc. are not acceptable explanations and will be considered violations.
▪ Accessing/viewing a cell phone, smartwatch, or similar device during the testing period. To check time or view a text message, etc. are not acceptable explanations and will be considered violations.
▪ Using a calculator or other electronic device that has stored information, even if pertinent information is not accessed.
▪ Taking a picture of a quiz, test, or semester exam, even if the picture was not sent to anyone.

1213 What is Plagiarism?
Many people think of plagiarism as copying another’s work or borrowing someone else’s original ideas. But terms like “copying” and “borrowing” can disguise the seriousness of the offense:
According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to “plagiarize” means
▪ to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
▪ to use (another's production) without crediting the source
▪ to commit literary theft
▪ to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source
In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else’s work and lying about it afterward.
But can words and ideas really be stolen? According to U.S. law, the answer is yes. In the United States and many other countries, the expression of original ideas is considered intellectual property, and is protected by copyright laws, just like original inventions. Almost all forms of expression fall under copyright protection if they are recorded in some media (such as a book or a computer file).
All the following are considered plagiarism:
▪ turning in someone else’s work as your own
▪ copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
▪ failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
▪ giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
▪ changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
▪ copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not (see our section on “fair use” rules)
Attention! Changing the words of an original source is not sufficient to prevent plagiarism. If you have retained the essential idea of an original source, and have not cited it, then no matter how drastically you may have altered its context or presentation, you have still plagiarized.
Most cases of plagiarism can be avoided by citing sources. Simply acknowledging that certain material has been borrowed and providing your audience with the information necessary to find that source is usually enough to prevent plagiarism.

1214 Artificial Intelligence
Emerging technology includes Artificial Intelligence (AI) language models such as Chat GPT, Bard, etc. These platforms use complex algorithms with access to limitless data to understand and respond to questions and statements, communicate with humans in natural language, and even replicate the image and likeness of people and objects with an image online. It is essentially a highly sophisticated chatbot that can respond to a wide range of questions and engage in conversations on a variety of topics. As a school, we recognize that AI and other technologies will only get more advanced in the years to come; therefore, it is our responsibility to lead and educate our students to use them effectively and ethically. AI should
never be a replacement for critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, or communication, and should only be used in class when directed by a teacher.
AI and Security
Mater Dei will implement reasonable security measures to secure deployed AI systems against unauthorized access and misuse. They will be evaluated for compliance with relevant laws and regulations, data protections, privacy, and student online safety.
1215 Academic Review Council
The Council is responsible to the Principal and shall meet immediately after report cards are issued for the first and second semesters. The Council may also meet for any serious infraction of academic probation.
The Academic Review Council will consist of
1. Assistant Principals
2. Executive Director of Counseling
3. Registrar
4. School Counselors
5. Executive Director of Learning Services
Function of the Council:
1. To review all students who are struggling academically.
2. To review all rules and regulations related to academics in the school.
3. To sit as a hearing body for academic challenges and violations of academic probations.
4. To act as an advisory body to the faculty regarding academic procedures.
1216 Work Permits and Employment
▪ State law requires that students who are under 18 years of age and who plan to work obtain a Work Permit.
▪ California State Labor Law prohibits students under 18 from working more than four (4) hours on a school day. They cannot work between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. on school days, and from 12:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. on weekends. The school has noticed a problem with students working long and unusual hours. Parents are urged to safeguard the physical, emotional, and intellectual health of their children by attention to this matter.
▪ All permits expire at the end of the summer and must be renewed in August of each school year.
▪ Students must maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. to receive a work permit.
1217 California Scholarship Federation
The purpose of the CSF is to recognize and encourage high scholastic achievement. Students who consistently earn membership in CSF increase their chances of college acceptance and become eligible for scholarship opportunities. Membership is based on semester grades. To be eligible, a student must earn 10 points:
▪ 3 points are given for each A
▪ 4 points are given for each Honors/AP A
▪ 1 point is given for each semester B
▪ 2 points are given for each Honors/AP B
▪ A maximum of 2 “extra” points are given per semester
▪ No points are given for a "C"
▪ A "D" or lower in any subject or an Unsatisfactory grade in Citizenship disqualifies students from participation for that semester.
▪ The following courses do not count toward CSF calculations: All sports, PE, Dance Team, Color Guard, Marching Band, Pep Squad, and Office Aide.
▪ Students who earn CSF membership for four semesters, including at least one semester based upon grades earned during the first semester of the senior year, are designated as seal bearers at graduation. These students are recognized at the CSF Senior Awards Ceremony and at Commencement.
▪ Students eligible for CSF must sign up during the sign-up weeks designated each February and October. Qualifying students are encouraged to apply.
1218 National Honors Society
National Honor Society membership is recognized throughout the United States. Students in grades 10 through 12 apply for membership in October. Members are selected based on their completed application. Requirements include:
▪ a minimum GPA of 3.3
▪ involvement in at least 2 co-curricular activities
▪ verified community service hours
▪ 25 hours for sophomores
▪ 50 hours for juniors
▪ 75 hours for seniors
▪ evidence of leadership ability and of personal integrity
Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee NHS membership. Once selected, students are required to participate in all NHS community service projects.
