Ms Tien-Hsin is a parent in the Mandarin program at PUSD All four of her children attend Field Elementary School. She has been a dedicated parent volunteer at Field Elementary for many years, serving the Mandarin immersion community with great enthusiasm.
Many parents and students have various questions about the Mandarin immersion program. In this issue, we are fortunate to have interviewed Ms. Tien-Hsin, a parent in the Mandarin immersion program, as well as some of our previous graduates. They answered some of the frequently asked questions, sharing their personal experiences and insights. From different perspectives, they discussed the advantages and challenges of the Mandarin immersion program. We hope these interviews will help everyone better understand the unique aspects of this program and the charm of learning Chinese. Let's see what they have to say.

Lauren Gray, Gwendolyn Lopez, and Alyssa Ho are graduates of the Mandarin immersion program at Sierra Madre Middle School from the classes of 2019, 2018, and 2017, respectively Lauren is graduating from high school this year and has been accepted to UCLA, USC, UC Berkeley, and Columbia University. Gwendolyn is currently a freshman at UCLA, and Alyssa is studying at UC Berkeley. Last year, Alyssa studied abroad at Tsinghua University in Beijing. They each shared some of their experiences in the Mandarin immersion program.

At the convention, we will have the opportunity to introduce our online magazine to hundreds of foreign language teachers and students from across the United States. It first came from the thoughts and actions of an ordinary Chinese woman, Jeanie Jew.
The establishment of "African History Week" and "Hispanic Heritage Week" preceded the establishment of Asian Pacific Heritage Month. As early as 1926, "Black History Week" (the second week of February) had spontaneously appeared in the African American community In 1969, the African American community proposed to expand it into "Black History Month" (Black History Month). In 1976, passed by Congress and signed by President Ford, designated February of each year as National Black History Month. Hispanic Week was established in 1968 and became a national celebration when it was passed by Congress and signed by President Johnson.
At the time, it occurred to a Chinese girl named Jeanie Jew, “What are the ways this country can improve public understanding of the contributions of Asian-Pacific Americans?” Jeanie’s great-grandfather, M.Y. This family experience convinced Jeanie that not only Asians need to understand their own cultural heritage, but that all Americans must understand the contributions and experiences of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States
She was a Capitol Hill staffer working for Rep. Frank Horton, R-N.Y. She suggested to Horton about teaming up with her supervisor, Ruby Moy, Horton's Chief of Staff. In 1978, Horton and former California Representative Norman Mineta jointly introduced a bill to set the week beginning May 4 as "Asia Pacific American Heritage Week" to commemorate the earliest arrival in the United States on May 7, 1843 The second is to commemorate the completion of the Great Western Railway built by Chinese workers on May 10, 1869. The bill was passed by Congress and signed by President Carter on October 5, 1978. However, Asia Pacific Heritage Week wasn’t an annual observance In 1988, Hispanic Heritage Week was expanded by Congress to become Hispanic Heritage Month In 1990, Asia Pacific Heritage Week was also expanded by Congress to become Asia Pacific Heritage Month, but it is still not an annual event. It wasn't until 1992, after Horton and others reintroduced a proposal, that Congress permanently designated May of each year as Asia-Pacific Heritage Month.
"Jeanie turned a tragedy in her family's history into a positive force," Horton told a congressional hearing in 1992.
An ordinary woman has affected the history of the country in this way.

Seventh-grade students in their Chinese class wrote an explanatory essay about a food item from the United States. Seventh-grade students are studying "Journey to the West" This work is a lengthy supernatural novel written by the Ming Dynasty novelist Wu Cheng'en, which tells the story of Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and Tang Sanzang's journey to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures. This is a comprehensive display of students' writing and language application abilities, and also a record of the milestones of learning Chinese to Grade 8, which is shared with everyone.

Recently the eighth graders had a world history project on the 13 colonies. Each group did 1 one of the 13 colonies. Each group had to write about their colony's economy, culture, region, and geography.
A few of the colonies the eighth graders did: Maryland, Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut
This world history project the eighth graders got to do was an opportunity for them to learn about the history, culture, region, economy, and geography of their colony.
For example, one of the projects was about the Colony of Connecticut which is one of the 13 colonies. The colony of Connecticut was known for writing and adopting the Fundamental Orders in 1639 .

Andrew Luo Lilyana Du Michaela ChenStudents in 6th grade have been studying ancient China. They studied the geography of ancient china, focusing on important landmarks including, the Great Wall of China, the Terracotta Army and the Silk road as well as the natural cities such as Chang’an and Luo yang. They learned about the features of these places and how they helped ancient China thrive.
These students also leaned about some well known philosophers of ancient china. These philosophers are Confucius, Lao Zi, and Han Fei Zi. They learned about their teachings, as well as the story and though process behind them. Students also studies how these philosophers teachings and beliefs impacted the ancients world around them.

During this period in East Asia, particularly in Korea, China, and Japan, agriculture was central to livelihoods, with rice cultivation being prevalent. Social structures were characterized by divisions between nobles and commoners, with family life often centered around the mother. In Japan, power resided with the Uji clan, while the emperor's authority was limited, influenced by Chinese and Korean cultures. China's governance relied on imperial bureaucracy and the imperial examination system for selecting officials. Similarly, Japan modeled its cities and governance after China, evident in Nara's resemblance to Chang'an. Despite the persistence of Shinto, Buddhism spread and coexisted with native beliefs. Literary expressions in Japan primarily comprised poetry, focusing on themes of love and nature's beauty.
In the 8th century, Nara became Japan's political and religious hub, mirroring Chang'an's layout, with wide streets, government buildings, and Buddhist temples. The Fujiwara family dominated political power during the Heian period, establishing a hierarchical system based on Confucianism Kyoto became the new capital in 784 AD, characterized by lavish palaces, government structures, and strict social etiquette However, power gradually shifted to noble families, weakening imperial authority Samurai training emphasized psychological resilience and combat skills, with samurai mastering various weapons and techniques, including archery and swordsmanship. The emergence of the samurai class led to a feudal-like system, with daimyo serving the shogun and upholding military values. Loyalty to the shogun became paramount, and samurai status was open to individuals irrespective of gender.

In the 8th-grade world history course at Madre Middle School, students delved into several significant historical themes, including th Thirteen Colonies, the birth of the Constitution, the establishment of presidential system, the near-extinction of bison, the California Gold Rush, and the American Civil War During the unit on the Constitution students learned about the background and proceedings of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Initially convened to amend the Articles of Confederation, the Convention quickly decided to draft an entirely new Constitution.
This new Constitution not only laid the foundation for American law but also introduced the presidential system, a form of government where the executive branch is overseen by an elected head of state.
The course also explored the ecological disaster of the near-extinction of bison in the 19th century During this period, the bison population plummeted from eight million to just five hundred. By studying this history, students gained an understanding of the profound impact human activities can have on the natural environment.
The California Gold Rush was another key topic. In the mid-19th century, many Chinese immigrants came to California with dreams of striking it rich. Unfortunately, many arrived just as the Gold Rush was ending, forcing them to find work in railroad construction. Through this topic, students recognized the significant role immigrants played in the development of the United States.

The 7th and 8th graders students of the Mandarin immersion program at Sierra Madre Middle School participated in the 2024 "Sing With Me" National Chinese Music Video Competition. In this competition, students were required not only to create their own music videos but also to record songs The seventh graders chose to perform a choral rendition of "相亲相爱" (Close and Loving), while the eighth graders selected the Chinese version of "Let It Go" for their performance. This was an excellent opportunity to showcase their Chinese language skills and creativity.

The National Chinese Speech Contest is organized by the American Academy of International Culture and Education (AAICE). The competition is open to Chinese language learners from third grade through college across the United States Each year, the contest revolves around a specific theme, with competitions usually scheduled for February or March. The competition is divided into three categories: Immersion, Heritage, and Foreign Language, with all events conducted through Zoom. Participants are required to create speeches based on the designated theme. The theme for the 2024 contest was "The Beauty of Chinese" Award-winning students include Sedonah Jain (Heritage group, grades 6-8), Graciela Lopez(Immersion group, grades 6-8), and Kassia Ng (Heritage group, grades 6-8).

We are going to China! Students from grades 6-8 at Madre Middle School will embark on a field trip to China during the summer of 2025 This unforgettable cultural journey will take students to Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, and Chongqing. In Beijing, they will visit the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, learning about the magnificent history of ancient Chinese imperial palaces. In Shanghai, they will admire the bustling modern cityscape and the beauty of the Oriental Pearl Tower In Xi'an, they will explore the Terracotta Army, experiencing the grandeur and majesty of ancient emperors. In Chongqing, they will savor hotpot delicacies and immerse themselves in the unique charm of this mountain city. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to interact with local students and participate in cultural exchange activities, further enhancing their Chinese language skills and cultural understanding. This trip will not only extend classroom knowledge but also provide an exceptional opportunity to personally experience Chinese culture. We believe this journey will bring unique experiences and valuable insights to our students' Chinese learning!
