At the dawn of the Year of the Dragon, "Mandarin Moments" has made its debut with its inaugural issue, coinciding with the fifteenth anniversary of the Pasadena School District Mandarin Dual Immersion Program. Despite its milestone, Mandarin Dual Immersion programs in the United States remain a burgeoning field compared to other educational initiatives. These programs not only foster students' bilingual abilities and cross-cultural understanding but also aim to enhance their overall competencies, including creativity, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities. Throughout this journey, the guidance of educators, the learning of students, and the involvement of parents are all crucial. Nevertheless, we face numerous challenges such as inadequate teaching resources and a lack of standardized assessment criteria. Many parents also struggle to understand and support their children's learning due to language barriers, posing a dilemma we must address
The goal of "Mandarin Moments" is to strengthen connections within the Mandarin Dual Immersion program community, serving as a bridge for members to share resources, collaborate for mutual benefit, and cultivate students' interest in learning the Mandarin language and culture. We aim to address these challenges by sharing learning experiences and providing mutual support. Through its content, the magazine aims to showcase the unique aspects of Mandarin Dual Immersion programs, along with the progress and achievements of participating students. Managed primarily by students, the magazine fosters their skills while representing their commitment and contribution to the Mandarin Dual Immersion program.
Looking ahead, we aim to establish closer collaborative relationships with various Mandarin Dual Immersion program school communities Our plans include organizing special events such as free online lectures and Mandarin competitions to facilitate interactive exchanges among schools, thereby collectively elevating the quality and standards of Mandarin education We also encourage readers to actively participate in the magazine, whether through submissions, comments, or online discussions, as we embark on a journey of exploration, sharing, and growth together.

Wushu is a traditional form of Chinese martial arts, including techniques such as boxing, swordsmanship, and knife skills, emphasizing the harmony of body and mind. Through practicing martial arts, individuals can not only improve physical fitness but also cultivate willpower and inner balance, becoming a perfect combination of collective sports, artistic expression, and lifestyle attitude.

The Lantern Festival is a festival that is celebrated on the 15th day of the first month on the lunisolar Chinese calendar, during a full moon. There are several beliefs about the origin of the Lantern Festival. However, its roots trace back more than 2,000 years and are popularly linked to the reign of Emperor Wen of the Han dynasty Emperor Ming, an advocate of Buddhism, noticed Buddhist monks would light lanterns in temples on the fifteenth day of the first lunisolar month. As a result, he ordered all households, temples, and the imperial palace to light lanterns on that evening.
During the lantern festival, households normally eat tangyuan, which are glutinous rice balls filled with sweet red bean paste, sesame paste, or peanut butter. Tangyuan can be either boiled, steamed, or fried.
Another commonly eaten food during the Lantern Festival is commonly referred to as (jiao zi) or dumplings. Jiao zi is a dough filled with pork sometimes chicken with little veggies in it.

The Mandarin dual immersion students from Sierra Madre Middle School in the Pasadena Unified School District and Santa Fe Middle School in the Monrovia Unified School District, are engaging in a pen pal exchange activity. Every two weeks, students exchange letters to enhance their Chinese proficiency by sharing hobbies and opinions. The theme of the first letter is self-introduction, where students introduce their basic information, family, and interests to their pen pals.

Responsibilities:
Attend weekly team meetings to collaborate on magazine content and planning
Conduct sourcing, editing, photography, English translation, and other tasks to ensure the quality and diversity of magazine content
Complete assigned tasks on time and provide timely updates and adjustments on progress.
Maintain close communication with teachers and team members to address issues and share ideas.
Provide suggestions and recommendations for magazine improvement and actively participate in its development.
We are looking for individuals who are proactive, responsible, creative, and possess good proficiency in both Chinese and English.
Advertising Promoters: Two Positions Available
Responsibilities:
Attend weekly team meetings to understand magazine content and promotional strategies.
Promote "Mandarin Moments" magazine to various Chinese immersion programs to expand readership
Independently write advertising copy and design promotional materials to attract more readers.
Maintain timely communication with teachers and other promotional channels to adjust strategies and directions as needed
We need individuals who are proactive, possess good communication skills, and have an entrepreneurial spirit
