创刊辞

龙年伊始，《汉语时光》的首期终于与大家见面了。今年，Pasadena学区中文 沉浸项目迈入了第十五个年头，然而与其他教育项目相比，中文沉浸项目在美国仍然 属于新兴领域。这个项目不仅培养了学生的双语能力和跨文化理解，而且致力于提高 学生的综合素养，包括创造力、沟通能力和解决问题的技能。在这个过程中，老师的 教学、学生的学习以及家长的参与，都是至关重要的。然而，我们面临着教学资源不 足、缺乏统一完善的测评标准等诸多挑战，尤其是很多家长由于语言障碍而难以理解 和帮助学生学习，这是我们当下面临的困境。 《汉语时光》的目标是加强中文沉浸项目社区的联系，希望成为中文沉浸项目社 区的桥梁，让所有成员能够共享资源、合作共赢，促进学生对中文语言文化学习的兴 趣，并通过分享学习经验和互相支持来解决这些困难。我们希望通过杂志的内容，让 更多人了解中文沉浸项目的独特之处，以及学生们在其中的成长和收获。这个杂志主 要由学生们负责资料采集、编辑、排版、设计和宣传，这不仅是他们各种能力的锻 炼，更是对中文沉浸项目的一种承诺和贡献。 展望未来，我们希望能够与各个中文沉浸项目学校社区联合，建立更紧密的合作 关系。我们计划举办一些特殊活动，如免费线上讲座、中文竞赛等，以促进各个学校 之间的互动交流，共同提升中文教育的质量和水平。我们也鼓励读者积极参与杂志， 可以通过投稿、评论或者参与线上讨论等方式，与我们一同探索、分享和成长。 衷心感谢 Azusa Pacific University Keep History Alive Grant 的资助，使得

Inaugural Letter

At the dawn of the Year of the Dragon, "Mandarin Moments" has made its debut with its inaugural issue, coinciding with the fifteenth anniversary of the Pasadena School District Mandarin Dual Immersion Program. Despite its milestone, Mandarin Dual Immersion programs in the United States remain a burgeoning field compared to other educational initiatives. These programs not only foster students' bilingual abilities and cross-cultural understanding but also aim to enhance their overall competencies, including creativity, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities. Throughout this journey, the guidance of educators, the learning of students, and the involvement of parents are all crucial. Nevertheless, we face numerous challenges such as inadequate teaching resources and a lack of standardized assessment criteria. Many parents also struggle to understand and support their children's learning due to language barriers, posing a dilemma we must address.

The goal of "Mandarin Moments" is to strengthen connections within the Mandarin Dual Immersion program community, serving as a bridge for members to share resources, collaborate for mutual benefit, and cultivate students' interest in learning the Mandarin language and culture. We aim to address these challenges by sharing learning experiences and providing mutual support. Through its content, the magazine aims to showcase the unique aspects of Mandarin Dual Immersion programs, along with the progress and achievements of participating students. Managed primarily by students, the magazine fosters their skills while representing their commitment and contribution to the Mandarin Dual Immersion program.

Looking ahead, we aim to establish closer collaborative relationships with various Mandarin Dual Immersion program school communities. Our plans include organizing special events such as free online lectures and Mandarin competitions to facilitate interactive exchanges among schools, thereby collectively elevating the quality and standards of Mandarin education. We also encourage readers to actively participate in the magazine, whether through submissions, comments, or online discussions, as we embark on a journey of exploration, sharing, and growth together.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Azusa Pacific University Keep History Alive Grant for making the inception of this magazine possible. Special recognition goes to the pioneering students— Rebecca Wierman, Stella Ly, Graciela Lopez, Hazel Jennings, Marco Lamond, and Charlotte Young—for their unwavering trust and support at the outset of the project.

We look forward to "Mandarin Moments" becoming a vital link within the Mandarin Dual Immersion program community, providing ongoing inspiration and support for students, teachers, and parents alike. Let us explore, share, and grow together!

Student Work

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest pyramid in Egypt and one of the oldest. Egyptians built the Great Pyramid of Giza as a tomb for the pharaoh Khufu. This pyramid was constructed for Pharaoh Khufu, who was considered one of the divine pharaohs. During its construction, special measures were taken to ensure Khufu's happiness in the afterlife. They believed that failure to do so would bring about unfavorable consequences, so they worked hard to ensure everything was done perfectly.

This is the homework of the sixth-grade Mandarin Program students. It is about the Stone Age and describes the situations ancient people encountered in caves, the tools they used, and how they survived.

During the Stone Age, people lived in caves. They used tools of stone, bone, and wood, such as knives and spears. They hunted animals and gathered plants for food.

Inside the caves, they painted on the walls. They cooperated in small groups to survive.

Life was hard, but they cleverly adapted to the environment, doing their best to get through each day.

七年级的学生正在学习《西游记》。这部作品是明代小说家吴承恩所著的一部 长篇神魔小说，讲述了孙悟空、猪八戒、沙僧和唐僧一起西天取经的旅程。在这 个故事中，他们面临了各种困难和挑战，克服了妖魔鬼怪的阻挠，最终成功取得 真经。《西游记》被认为是中国文学的经典之作。学生们的项目是介绍《西游 记》中的主要人物，并用漫画形式呈现其中的主要故事。

Seventh-grade students are studying "Journey to the West." This work is a lengthy supernatural novel written by the Ming Dynasty novelist Wu Cheng'en, which tells the story of Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and Tang Sanzang's journey to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures. In this tale, they encounter various difficulties and challenges, overcome obstacles from demons and monsters, and ultimately succeed in obtaining the scriptures. "Journey to the West" is considered a classic of Chinese literature. The students' project involves introducing the main characters of "Journey to the West" and presenting the main stories in comic form.

This project was created to introduce the four major caliphs of Islam.

Recently the eighth graders had a world history project on the 13 colonies. Each group did 1 one of the 13 colonies. Each group had to write about their colony's economy, culture, region, and geography.

A few of the colonies the eighth graders did: Maryland, Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.

This world history project the eighth graders got to do was an opportunity for them to learn about the history, culture, region, economy, and geography of their colony.

For example, one of the projects was about the Colony of Connecticut which is one of the 13 colonies. The colony of Connecticut was known for writing and adopting the Fundamental Orders in 1639

Chinese New Year Introduction

The Spring Festival is very famous in China and is also very important in different parts of Asia. The Spring Festival is also known as "Chinese New Year". The Spring Festival marks the beginning of spring and the end of winter and is also celebrated as the New Year in the lunar calendar. Moreover, the Spring Festival often begins on the new moon between January 21st and February 20th.

People often wear red clothes during the Spring Festival, put red paper and words on doorways and windows, set off firecrackers, have meals with their families, and clean up the house. At this time, you can also see dragon dance, lion dance, and other Chinese performances.

Some well-known characters are often seen during the Spring Festival, such as blessing, attracting wealth, and having more than enough every year. These words all mean money, and people also paste the word " " upside down so that all the money and good luck can fall. People also give red envelopes during the Spring Festival, which contain money.

Married people and elders give red envelopes to unmarried people and children.

During the Spring Festival, in addition to exchanging wishes of "Gong Xi Fa Cai!" (Wishing you prosperity!), there are also regional food customs. For example, people in the north usually make and enjoy dumplings, symbolizing reunion and the arrival of wealth; while people in the south tend to prefer eating rice cakes, symbolizing good luck year after year.

Furthermore, the dining table during the Spring Festival is filled with various delicacies, such as fish symbolizing wealth, noodles representing longevity, abundant fruits symbolizing harvest, spring rolls representing the flourishing of spring, and glutinous rice balls symbolizing reunion. These foods not only satisfy the taste buds but also convey hopes and blessings for a bright future.

Chinese New Year Performances

舞狮 - LION DANCE 舞狮是中国一种中国民间传统表演艺术。通常在中国新年和其他 节日上表演。表演中的舞狮可以有多种颜色，也有单人表演的小型狮 子。通常，舞狮由两人搭档表演，一人控制狮头，另一人控制狮背。两 人需要高度协调，以展现出狮子的动态效果。

The lion dance is one of China’s traditional folk performing arts. Lion dancers will often be seen performing on Chinese New Year or on other holidays. The lion costumes seen during the performances come in many different colors, and there may also be small lions that perform solo. Usually, one lion costume will have two people inside that perform, one who controls the head of the lion and another the rear. These two people have to be very coordinated with their moves in order to make the lion look like it is moving fluidly.

舞龙/武术 -DRAGON DANCE/ WUSHU 舞龙是中国传统表演艺术之 一，类似于舞狮，表演者分布在龙 的不同部位，使得龙看起来生动活 泼。通常在中国新年期间观赏到舞 龙表演，龙象征着好运，长度与表 演时长相关，可由多人操作，因此 参与人数较多时可以表演更大、更 长的龙。 武术是中国传统的武术形式，包 括拳术、剑术、刀术等多种技艺， 注重身心的和谐与修养。通过练习 武术，人们不仅可以提高身体素 质，还能培养意志力和内在平衡， 成为一种集体体育、艺术表现和生 活态度的完美结合。

Dragon dance is one of the traditional Chinese performing arts, similar to lion dance, where performers are distributed throughout the dragon to make it look lively. Dragon dance performances are usually seen during the Chinese New Year, symbolizing good luck. The length of the dragon is related to the duration of the performance and can be operated by multiple people, allowing for larger and longer dragons with more participants.

Wushu is a traditional form of Chinese martial arts, including techniques such as boxing, swordsmanship, and knife skills, emphasizing the harmony of body and mind. Through practicing martial arts, individuals can not only improve physical fitness but also cultivate willpower and inner balance, becoming a perfect combination of collective sports, artistic expression, and lifestyle attitude.

伞舞 UMBRELLA DANCE 伞舞是中国历史悠久的传统舞蹈，起源于中国古代，是一种非常著名 的舞蹈形式。这种舞蹈起源于中国雨伞制作发达的地区，可能最早用于宗 教仪式或庆祝活动。伞舞通常在中国新年和元宵节等重要节日上表演，也 常用于庆祝婚礼和新生儿的诞生，为活动增添喜庆气氛。

Umbrella dance is a traditional dance with a long history in China. It originated in ancient China and is a very famous dance form. This dance originated in areas of China where umbrella-making was developed and was probably first used in religious ceremonies or celebrations. The Umbrella Dance is usually performed at important festivals such as Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival and is also commonly used to celebrate weddings and the birth of new babies, adding a festive atmosphere to the event.

The Noodle Dance is a popular dance performance on Chinese social media. This dance is often showcased on platforms like Douyin (TikTok) and performed in some Chinese restaurants or entertainment venues.

Customers can request waitstaff to perform the Noodle Dance through ordering. It can be performed by either individuals or groups, but if performed by multiple people, synchronization is required to ensure a neat and coordinated effect. The Noodle Dance typically features lively rhythms and dynamic movements, appealing greatly to young audiences.

空竹 - CHINESE YOYO

Chinese yo-yo is typically a prop used for juggling or circus performances, similar to the Western yo-yo. The exact origin of Chinese diabolo is unclear, but the earliest mentions date back to the Ming Dynasty. Chinese yo-yo was first introduced to Europe from China in 1792. They are usually made of wood or bamboo, and may also include a wooden stick and a string.

Lantern Festival The Lantern Festival is a festival that is celebrated on the 15th day of the first month on the lunisolar Chinese calendar, during a full moon. There are several beliefs about the origin of the Lantern Festival. However, its roots trace back more than 2,000 years and are popularly linked to the reign of Emperor Wen of the Han dynasty. Emperor Ming, an advocate of Buddhism, noticed Buddhist monks would light lanterns in temples on the fifteenth day of the first lunisolar month. As a result, he ordered all households, temples, and the imperial palace to light lanterns on that evening.

During the lantern festival, households normally eat tangyuan, which are glutinous rice balls filled with sweet red bean paste, sesame paste, or peanut butter. Tangyuan can be either boiled, steamed, or fried.

Another commonly eaten food during the Lantern Festival is commonly referred to as (jiao zi) or dumplings. Jiao zi is a dough filled with pork sometimes chicken with little veggies in it.

Many people enjoy watching dragon dance and lion dance, they also enjoy setting off fireworks together. People also enjoy hanging up colorful lanterns and solving riddles. These riddles are called dēng mí The lantern owners write riddles on small strips of paper they attach to the lantern they have hanging outside their home, so visitors can try to guess and solve the riddle.

7th-grade students completed narrative writing with the theme of "immigration," where they documented their families' immigration stories. Among them, narrative essays by Aviendha Wang, Jasmine Ung and Anya Schmunk, were published in the largest Chinese newspaper in the United States, World Journal.

笔 友 交 流 活 动

帕萨迪纳学区的马德雷中学（Sierra Madre Middle School）和蒙罗维亚学区的圣菲中学 （Santa Fe Middle School）的中文沉浸项目的同 学们正在进行笔友交流活动。同学们每两个星期交 换一次信件，通过分享爱好、观点来提升中文水 平。第一封信的主题是自我介绍，学生们向他们的 笔友介绍了自己的基本信息、家庭和喜好。

The Mandarin dual immersion students from Sierra Madre Middle School in the Pasadena Unified School District and Santa Fe Middle School in the Monrovia Unified School District, are engaging in a pen pal exchange activity. Every two weeks, students exchange letters to enhance their Chinese proficiency by sharing hobbies and opinions. The theme of the first letter is self-introduction, where students introduce their basic information, family, and interests to their pen pals.

Eligible Candidates: All students in Madnarin immersion programs

Editors: One Position Available Responsibilities: Attend weekly team meetings to collaborate on magazine content and planning.

Conduct sourcing, editing, photography, English translation, and other tasks to ensure the quality and diversity of magazine content.

Complete assigned tasks on time and provide timely updates and adjustments on progress.

Maintain close communication with teachers and team members to address issues and share ideas.

Provide suggestions and recommendations for magazine improvement and actively participate in its development.

We are looking for individuals who are proactive, responsible, creative, and possess good proficiency in both Chinese and English.

Advertising Promoters: Two Positions Available Responsibilities: Attend weekly team meetings to understand magazine content and promotional strategies.

Promote "Mandarin Moments" magazine to various Chinese immersion programs to expand readership.

Independently write advertising copy and design promotional materials to attract more readers.

Maintain timely communication with teachers and other promotional channels to adjust strategies and directions as needed.

We need individuals who are proactive, possess good communication skills, and have an entrepreneurial spirit.
