Four Things Every Parent Should Know Before Choosing A Dance Studio The Ashburn Academy of Ballet Visit our website at: www.ashburnballet.com If all dance studios in the area seem to have friendly teachers, experience teaching children and a big performance at the end of the year, aren’t they all pretty much the same? Does it really matter which school you decide to choose? Yes, it does! There are 4 main things that can make a huge difference in the quality of instruction that your child receives. Here are 4 things that all parents should consider before deciding on a dance studio for their child.

1. EDUCATION OR COMPETITION? It is important to ask the question of a studio, is your emphasis on education or competition? Dance originated as an art form, and when dance schools compete for trophies and “places” then it becomes a sport. Our dancers’ classical training is showcased in performances for the community as artistic entertainment. This allows our students to gain confidence through personal and physical growth. At our school, competitions do not define our students as “winners or losers”. Our dancers are equipped with the technique and knowledge to continue their study of dance at a higher educational level if they so choose.

recreational to professional dance. A marley floor allows the dancer to “slide” without slipping. Few studios use professional marley floors in their studios and take one to their performance site and usually opt for a slippery wood floor.

2. WHAT TYPE OF PERFORMANCE DO YOU HAVE AT THE END OF THE YEAR? Is the emphasis of the recital the technique that has been taught over the year or is it a dance that has been practiced for the entire year? We don’t start our recital dances until the beginning of February, with an emphasis on technique throughout the year. We choose tasteful and age appropriate costumes and choreography for all of our dancers. We want parents to feel comfortable and proud of what their children are presenting on stage. We feel the focus of the performance should reflect what the students have learned throughout the year. 3. WHAT TYPE OF DANCE FLOOR IS USED? Dance is a physical activity that requires a lot of jumping, which can put stress on bones and joints. Most dance footwear does not provide any cushioning or support, so the shock of dance movement can put a lot of pressure on the dancer’s back and knees. The best way to prevent against a potential injury is by choosing a studio with a professional “floating floor”. A floating floor is a dance floor that rests on high density foam blocks to absorb the shock of jumping. The top layer of a dance floor is also an important factor. A vinyl composite “marley” floor is accepted worldwide as the best surface layer for

All three of our studios are 1200 sq ft each equipped with floating floors that have over 700 high density foam blocks under the floor surface and a marley top surface. An additional marley floor is taken and laid for our school performances.

4. WHAT ARE YOUR TEACHERS’ QUALIFICATIONS? It is important to ask what training and background the instructors at the studio have. Dance instructors should have a college degree in dance or be pursuing one and/or professional experience. All of our instructors at the Ashburn Academy of Ballet either have a college degree in dance and/or professional experience.

president ’ s report

Doug Carlson President dcarlson@ashburnvillage.org 2008 - 2010 term

Greetings, Fellow Villagers! End of Summer – Start of School As the days of summer draw to an end we are once again placing in the annals of Ashburn Village history another successful swimming pool and Aqua Jets season, Fourth of July celebration, RISE Camp and Sports Pavilion close week. The efforts of the association staff and our contractors, WTS and Winkler Pool Management, have been outstanding this summer and we thank them. I must also comment on the status of the lakes and ponds within the community. It has been many years since we last saw a summer with so much heat and yet very few algae blooms. We owe that exceptional effort to the hard work of our environmental and water conservation contractor, Virginia Waters. Close week at the Pavilion this year saw the usual top to bottom cleaning but in addition, the gym floor was replaced. I encourage everyone to stop by and take a look or get a game of basketball in with your friends. The work took several weeks but I think all will agree that the job was first rate. With the start of the school season fast approaching, we need to be cognizant of the fact that our children will be walking to the bus stops and schools in their neighborhoods and standing on or near the sidewalks and neighborhood street intersections. There are many new commuting options that have opened up in the last several months. Many residents and non-residents are using these alternative roads and speeds are increasing even without the limits being raised. With three schools in the Village and many young children attending them, please be careful when driving in the early morning and afternoon. FY 2011 Budget & Thoughts The General Manager, Finance Manager, Budget and Finance Committee along with the BOD and other standing committees and concerned residents began the work of formulating the fiscal year 2011 budget on August 30th. The plan is to complete the draft budget no later than September 10th. This is a departure from previous years when the planning was completed over a series of weeks during the month of September. Since there is great concern among a few homeowners that rates will be skyrocketing, the senior staff, the Treasurer (Chris Hettinger) and I decided to start and complete the work with plenty of time for the community to weigh in ahead of the annual meeting and elections.

Contrary to the beliefs of some in the community, rates will not be increasing astronomically or without reason. In addition, some would have you believe the fallacy that our budget can and should be cut substantially; this is also untrue. The individuals who make these claims are simply pandering and are uneducated in the cost of operating the association. These claims are being made in an attempt to gain favor and your vote. I would ask that you review the draft budget and all of the ancillary documentation and become familiar with the budget for yourself. The draft and the supporting documentation will be placed on the association’s web site for all homeowners. The bottom line is that Ashburn Village operates on a zero-based budget. That means we spend as much money as we take in, period. We set revenue targets for the programs offered at the Sports Pavilion and spending caps in all departments and operations in order to build a solid budget, which translates into the annual assessment. The association’s top expenditures are: landscape, lake/ pond and general maintenance, trash and recycling, annual Reserve contributions, Pavilion operations and salaries & benefits of the staff. The association negotiates long-term contracts for all recurring operations and maintenance in order to obtain the best possible financial deals. The bulk of our annual increases are due to contract escalators over the life of the negotiated deals, our maintenance and utilities requirements and our commitments to our employees. Just as with anything else in our personal household budgets, the annual budget increases as prices for materials, labor and other market-driven forces and utilities increase. The Straight-up Truth about Your Village While the Board of Directors has tried desperately to remain politically neutral for years, I am compelled to set the record straight in several areas that have been recently discussed on a local web site. This site professes to have unlocked the diabolical secrets of the Sports Pavilion renovation and modernization project as well as nefarious activities involving the operations of the association and the budget process. The truth of the matter is that a minority group of very outspoken individuals, including one current and one former director, would have you believe that a voting majority of directors is out of control and ( C ontinued on next page)

spending money with reckless abandon. These same individuals would also have you believe that the association’s assessments are going to be raised in an astronomical fashion to support a minority of the homeowners and non-residents with whimsical ideas related to the Pavilion renovation and modernization project. Finally, these same people would have you believe, as they firmly do, that assessments can be reduced while sustaining the same level of services and maintenance for our community. All of these accusations and misleading rhetoric are unequivocally false and have no merit. Our community is comprised of many assets that we must sustain for all homeowners; otherwise our community would fall into disrepair or worse, negatively affect our own property values. Take, for example, several years in the early part of the last decade when the General Manager and President of the Board were 100% responsible for the lack of annual maintenance policies. This lack of strategic thought led to hundreds of thousands of dollars in early replacement and rebuild costs of key elements such as the indoor pool heating system, tennis bubble heat system, street lights, soccer and baseball fields, trails, recreation center interiors and more. The money we have expended in recent years to resolve these issues could have been avoided had a strategic common-sense approach to maintenance been employed. We made a strategic new beginning a few years ago with the advent of the Landscape Revitalization Project, a program that will transform the association’s common areas, create a more sustainable environment and lower maintenance costs over time. This project is not inexpensive but it has been developed to span several years in order to spread the costs out over time. The renovation and modernization of the Sports Pavilion is no different. We have taken a common-sense multi-year approach to enhancing the 20-year-old facility and position it as a sustainable feature of the association for the next 20 years. The proposed multiyear Pavilion project is no different in this sense from the smaller-scale projects we have performed in the recreation centers to replace flooring, kitchen appliances, enhance and revitalize the pool bathrooms/locker rooms, install lights for the tennis courts and pool, replace street light assemblies with more energy efficient fixtures, and more. The recommended improvements, contrary to what some would have you believe, are designed for all members, not a select few - just like every other enhancement undertaken in recent years. In order to manage the day-to-day operations it takes employees, consultants and contractors to perform the duties and tasks associated with running a community the size of Ashburn Village. In effect Ashburn Village is a small business or town with employees and obligations to the shareholders or residents. No matter which analogy is used the end result is the same; it requires money to provide the ( C ontinued on next page)

services and maintenance we are compelled to perform. We do not have the lowest assessment among planned developments in Loudoun County, but we are certainly not the highest either. Ashburn Village, with all of our amenities, services and offerings is right in the middle. We are one of the largest developments and have more to offer than any other planned community; because of this simple fact we have more to maintain, sustain and manage for the benefit of the entire community. The salacious remarks being made are meritless and those who continue to espouse them know better. Even in the face of the statistical data presented to them, they cry foul. They have no problem spending several million dollars for landscape revitalization but when it comes to spending similar amounts on another asset equally as important, they baulk. Why? Again, they stand on anecdotal information supplied by persons with agendas to eliminate children’s programs including swim team and swim lessons, stop group activities and what would amount to stifling participation in arguably the association’s primary common asset. The flaw in their belief is that the elimination of the programs would allow for more open activity participation. What they know but do not state is that we need the programs in order to pay the remainder of the operational costs for the facility not covered by monthly assessments. As a matter of fact, the profit Ashburn Village gleaned from the Blue Waves Swim Team in the 2009-2010 season has eliminated the entire operational loss due to three back-to back blizzards this past winter that spanned two fiscal years. Had it not been for the success of that program we would be making up the loss in FY2011. Other local communities were not so lucky; they had to special assess their residents upwards of $200-$300 per household to cover their losses. One final thought. Some candidates have mentioned that we need to amend our governing documents to place more constraint on the board and its power. This, while being a noble thought, is extremely costly (attorney’s fees, document review, printing, filing with the State, etc.) and

would require a two-thirds majority approval of all lot owners. While the governing documents are certainly not perfect, the developer solely funded the cost the last time they were changed and could do so without a majority vote. Not one Board has ever, as a majority, raised our assessments over and above what is called for in the declaration and governing documents; it simply cannot happen. What the governing documents did was to set a maximum cap on assessments in categories specific to the association’s operations. Those caps are used simply for calculation purposes designed to place boundaries on spending by the BOD, not a maximum assessment that would, should or could occur. Again, this is simply a tactic used to scare people and make them believe that any board can run amuck. I can think of many things we can do with our money other than give it to lawyers for a process that by design is nearly impossible to attain. There have also been cries that our documents do not adhere to the Property Owner’s Act (POA) and perhaps we are not abiding by the laws of the Commonwealth; this is simply not true. Our attorneys give the board a clear and concise assessment of the changes each year to the POA. Our governing documents reference the POA so how are we out of step and not complying with the laws of the Commonwealth? We are a very conservative organization with respect to our decision-making. If there is the slightest thought that we may be heading down a path that could lead to legal issues, we get our attorneys to weigh-in. Pavilion Renovation Update During the August Board of Directors meeting, a vote was taken and passed to begin the RFP process to solicit bids from design firms. Once a contract is awarded, the development of a Master Plan for the Pavilion renovation/modernization will begin in FY2011. The selected firm will not only design a complete program of change in phases, but will be required to stay within the agreed upon not-to-exceed budget of $5.3 million for all elements (including design, construction and contingency). The phased approach to the project will be developed with a long-term execution time of 5-7 years. This will minimize annual assessment increases while standing by the commitment of maintaining and improving this vital asset for all. Each phase of the plan will then be voted on by the current board in order to proceed. The RFP is posted on the association web site and can be found at www.ashburnvillage. org under Sports Pavilion Renovation & Revitalization. If you have questions or comments, please forward them to renovatepavilion@ashburnvillage.org or bod@ashburnvillage.org. See you around the Village! The Villager

The candidates are Bob Graham, Dave Austin, Doug Carlson, Gene May, Jack Ryan, Karen Guthrie, and Richard Nutwell. Fall is in the Air! As I write this in early August, the dog days of summer are here with temperatures in the 90s and rain that is very spotty around the area. This makes it hard to talk about fall and chores around the yard and garden. I am a person who loves being outside and suffers from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) related to lack of sunlight. I have already noticed that the days are getting shorter and that the sunlight is not coming from as high in the sky as it did a month ago. I dread the days getting short and always look forward to just before Christmas when the days start to get longer again. My “lawn” has suffered from lack of rain more it seems this summer than for the past few summers. Now you must understand that my “lawn” had a former life as a pasture and is now just mowed as a lawn. I don’t spend money on over-seeding, fertilizing, or irrigation and am happy with whatever is there that is green. I prefer to spend my money on woody ornamental trees and shrubs. Established cool season lawns can survive all but the most severe drought.

They go dormant, meaning they will stop growth, brown out, and rest until more favorable environmental conditions return. Within a week after sufficient rain, you will see them greening up and growth resuming. Fall is an excellent time to perform many chores related to your turf. Over-seeding/planting of new lawns should occur in mid-late August into September. Test your soil to see if the pH needs adjusting and what nutrients the soil may need. You can pick up a soil test kit that you send to the lab at Virginia Tech at the information desk at your local library. Other lawn chores that can be done at this time are core aeration and top dressing with compost – these help to open the soil and add organic matter which will build and improve your soil making for a stronger stand of turf. There are many publications related to turf at the VCE website: http://pubs.ext.vt.edu/category/lawns.html. I used to worry about fall clean-up in my ornamental beds. Now I leave most of that work until spring. Turf n It is time to apply herbicides to your lawn for winter annual or perennial weeds that germinate or form rosettes in turf during the fall. Check herbicide labels before using, and select an appropriate chemical for the weed types and lawn type in your yard. n Don’t retire the lawn mower when the growth of your lawn slows down this fall. As long as the grass continues to grow, it should be mowed. n Don’t allow leaves to accumulate on the lawn. Rake them up regularly, and store in a pile for use as mulch in your garden next summer. If leaves accumulate on your lawn and become matted down by rain, they may kill the grass. n Early autumn is the best time of the year for the sowing of grass seed. Grass sown in spring is often killed by hot, dry, summer weather. For more vigorous growth, spread a very thin mulch of clean straw over newly seeded areas. The straw shades delicate seedlings from the hot sun and helps preserve moisture in

the soil, yet lets enough light through for germination. By the time cold weather arrives, the grass is fairly well established and ready to grow and thicken early the following spring. n Healthy green grass outside the windows of your home can cool the breeze off hot pavement by as much as 10 degrees F.

Gardening Tips n Wait until deciduous trees and shrubs begin to drop their leaves before fertilizing them. This signals dormancy, when no new growth will be stimulated that might not harden off prior to cold temperatures. However, roots are active until soil temperature drops below 40 degrees F, so nutrients will be taken up and used by the plants to develop a stronger root system. n To minimize the occurrence of black spot on roses, prune and remove infected areas. Be sure to destroy the clippings, as the disease will carry over from year to year. n Many balled and burlapped trees and shrubs are now sold wrapped in synthetic burlap that will not rot in the ground, resulting in a rootbound plant that doesn’t grow well if the burlap is left in place. Some of this material strongly resembles cotton burlap; if in doubt about the burlap’s makeup, cut it away from the root ball once the plant is in place. n Select some accent plants for your landscape that will provide autumn color. Trees that turn red include dogwood, red maple, black gum, sweet gum, and red or scarlet oak. Shrubs with red fall foliage include viburnum, blueberry, Virginia sweetspire, and barberry. n Tree-wound paints used after pruning are no longer recommended because they can slow healing and may promote decay. n The perfect gift for the golden anniversary? Give the Golden Rain Tree, Koulreuteria panniculata, favored for its brilliant, gold, fall foliage show. Two Full-Service Veterinary Facilities!

Healthy Back to School Lunches It’s back to school time for many of us, and that means getting the hang of a new routine. For me, that means once again packing lunches. While I know there are some good options available at the schools, I prefer to send my kids off to school with a packed lunch. By packing their lunches, I am in control of what they are eating. It also allows me to be more active in reducing the amount of packaging used during lunch. So, with that in mind, I wanted to share some information and ideas about choosing lunch options for your kids. PACK FOOD IN REUSABLE CONTAINERS According to Waste-free Lunches (http://www.wastefreelunches.org/), one student bringing their lunch to school will create approximately 67 pounds of trash per school year. If you stop and think about it, it’s easy to see how that can add up and create a burden for our already financially strapped schools to haul off to the nation’s landfills. After reading that and deciding I wanted to do my part, I am making some environmentally friendly changes. I went to the local grocery store and purchased reusable lunch containers to use. I bought 2 sets of each type for each kid - thinking that I’m covered if one is left at school overnight or not washed. They have all sorts of shapes, colors and patterns to choose from – have your kids choose the ones they want. Don’t forget to also consider packing reusable utensils and a reusable water bottle. By making a small change like this, not only can you impact the environment, but you can use it as an opportunity to teach your kids the importance of recycling and being conscious of the world around them.

To find container ideas – use the search term ‘reusable lunch containers’ in any search engine and you will see many options to choose from. HEALTHY LUNCH IDEAS I am fairly confident that I am not the only parent who has to deal with picky eaters. Both of my kids are selective and to make it even more ‘fun,’ they tend to be polar opposites when it comes to their choices. Because of this, I am always looking for lunch ideas that are easy to make , healthy and will appeal to both of them. With a bunch of different types of containers available now, you can make just about anything work! Last year, I often heated up leftovers like Mac and Cheese or tomato soup and packed it in a thermos that holds its heat. It usually took me less than 5 minutes to reheat and store. And for inspiration beyond the good ole sandwich standby, I found some great suggestions

www.livefitandsore.com

at Good Housekeeping Online (http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/food/ healthy/ideas-kids-school-lunches). Try going over these lunch ideas with your kids ahead of time to find the ones they will eat. Sometimes, letting them have a say in what’s for lunch can make all the difference. Also, try not to let the side choices you pack overrun the healthy options. In addition to a main entrée - I pack fresh fruit and small carrots each day. Depending on the day, I also include yogurt (in tubes or cups), cottage cheese, applesauce or string cheese as well as one ‘treat’ usually chosen by them. While not a completely bythe-book healthy lunch, I try to shoot for the 80/20 rule of thumb: 80% of the lunch could be considered healthy with the other 20% more of a treat. You have to consider what your kids will really eat and what you have time to prepare – and tailor lunch to that. After a morning of learning, kids are hungry and will eat just about anything. So I prefer to be in control of what that ‘anything’ is. For me, teaching them to be conscious of how their actions affect the world around them and providing them with healthy lunch options is worth the effort it takes in the morning. Visit my blog to find more family nutrition ideas: http://www.livefitand sore.com. You can also find support and general information about all sorts of things related to living a fit and healthy life. Feel free to email me or leave a comment when you do visit, letting me know you are finding my information helpful. While opinions, resources and information provided at livefitandsore.com are my own, my hope is that you find what you need to ignite and inspire you as you make progress on your own fit and healthy journey. The Critter Corner- Encore Presentation

Junk Food Dog

A woman called me the other day, frantic that her six month old Labrador puppy, Max, was choking. I asked her if Max could have gotten into anything. She said Max had been eating a rawhide bone a short while earlier. I told her to check in the pup’s mouth, and I heard her shout, “Oh, my gosh!” She was able to get her hand down the dog’s mouth and hook her finger behind a large piece of rawhide wedged in there. Luckily, she was able to dislodge it. This woman and Max were both very fortunate. What if that had happened while Max was left alone? Dogs get into all sorts of stuff they shouldn’t, but quite often they are given things they shouldn’t have. Like every good dog owner, you want to make your dog happy, but how do you discern which toys and treats are safe? Some owners give their dogs just about anything under the sun - from worn out shoes and socks to steak and chicken bones left over from dinner. Others may pick out any toy that looks cute. Both groups unknowingly put their dogs at risk for choking, intestinal obstructions, or stomach and pancreatic infections, any of which may cause death. Stuffed toys, socks, towels, in fact anything that can be

Dr. Steve Velling www.ashburnanimals.com 703-729-0700

torn apart, can potentially be swallowed and cause problems. I’ve seen dogs swallow socks whole and need them surgically removed. What about rawhides, pig ears, or Nylabones? Rawhides are usually well-tolerated, but they may cause stomach upset, or become a choking hazard as mentioned earlier. It is best to observe your pooch if you give him or her one. Pig ears are trouble. Although dogs seem to love them, I’ve seen far too many dogs become very ill after eating them. Nylabones can also be dangerous. Made from nylon, these knobby bones are supposed to stand up to chewing, but if a dog bites off a large enough piece, this indigestible material could spell danger. What should you leave with your dog to keep him or her occupied while you are gone? Provide only sturdy toys that won’t shred, break up or be swallowed whole. When it comes to dog toys, one size does not fit all. P.S. Marrow bones are good, but make sure to boil them for 3-5 minutes to kill off any potentially dangerous bacteria.
