The Ashburn Villager

President’s Report PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Richard Nutwell President 2006–2007 Board of Directors

Effective communication with homeowners concerning the many “things” happening in and around the Village continues to be one of our paramount objectives as a Board. Obviously The Villager is a primary way to effectively communicate. We plan to expand both its utility and functionality, and hope you are noticing changes designed to accomplish this goal. For this report I will provide the status of the interchange proposed for the intersection of Ashburn Village Boulevard & Route 7, and highlight the new contracts with WTS to manage the Sports Pavilion and operate the pools for the summer. It is our understanding that discussions and meetings are occurring between the interchange builder, Miller and Smith, the County and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Mr. Bill May, the action officer for Miller and Smith, provided an informative briefing to homeowners at the February Board of Directors (BOD) meeting, and has indicated his intention of providing us with an update as soon as meaningful

information is available. When the date of Bill’s next briefing is established, we will publicize this information. He is shooting for the May meeting. We recently signed a new three year contract with WTS, the contractor which manages our Sports Pavilion in such a professional manner. I want to extend my thanks to all who participated in the process. This includes senior staff at the Ashburn Village Community Association, a “blue ribbon” committee composed of Village residents with extensive expertise in contract negotiation and administration, our own Budget and Finance Committee, and the contract team from WTS. But most of all I want to thank the dedicated team at the Sports Pavilion for their day-in and day-out exhibition of excellence in welcoming us, training our bodies, providing numerous programs for our use, etc. I will not try to mention their names (because I would inadvertently leave one out) but you know who they are. I ask homeowners to take a minute, as you rush to your exercise program, to thank a staff member or two for their great work. In addition, we have just signed a contract with WTS to operate all the Village swimming pools for the summer. Additional information on this will be provided in future editions of The Villager and other forums. Well neighbors, it’s early April and as I am typing this report it is 35 degrees outside. Hopefully by the time you get this issue, Spring will really be here and Ashburn Village will be alive with joggers, walkers, bike riders and the beautiful vegetation that make this neighborhood such a wonderful place for us to call home.

The Villager is changing! Have any ideas for articles or other information that you’d like to see in The Villager? Please send your ideas to avca@ashburnvillage.org. The Villager is published monthly by the Ashburn Village Community Association, Inc., for the residents of Ashburn Village.

The Ashburn Villager

Inside the Village Greetings Village residents! This month you’ll find several exciting additions to The Villager. We have added a section for “Village Kids” that includes some fun facts about Mother’s Day and asks kids in the Village to tell us why their mom is the greatest. Each month we would like to feature a Village Kid in the section “Village Kids Doing Great Things”. If you have someone to recommend, please let me know. You’ll also see a comic strip that is designed by a Village Kid along with our request for more comic strip submissions for future editions of The Villager. Another addition this month is our “Young At Heart – Village Seniors” section. Each month we will include a profile of a resident in our very active seniors community. I was delighted to spend time with Carl and Miriam Levine and learn more about them for their profile this month. You’ll also find information about recommended exercises for older adults and seniors. Your ideas for future content are welcome.

If you look at “Getting to Know …” on page 11, you’ll find a short bio introducing you to a member of our staff. This month we’re spotlighting Crishana Loritsch who started working here on April 2nd. Look for her out and about the Village conducting annual lot-by-lot inspections. I’ve started to receive some requests for future articles in The Villager. Please keep those requests coming! While I can’t guarantee that we will include your idea, I read every request that comes in, and they’re extremely helpful. Switching gears now… I’m sure you have all heard about the Koger Management scandal. When the story about Koger’s alleged embezzlement of funds from nearby HOAs, such as Ashburn Farm, was published in The Loudoun Times Mirror, I received a lot of phone calls from concerned Village residents asking if we use Koger. Ashburn Village is self-managed and does not use a management company such as Koger. In addition, we spend a great deal of time and effort striving to ensure that Village funds (your assessment dollars) are appropriately controlled to prevent any potential wrongdoing. Anyone with questions or concerns about how this works is welcome to contact me. Better yet…please come to our next Budget & Finance Committee Meeting and learn more. Thanks for taking the time to read The Villager and again thank you for your ideas and comments. Please join me in extending a special thanks to Meg Carlson who was kind enough to volunteer her services as our new Volunteer Editor, and also to Wil Carlson for being our guinea pig this month in “Village Kids”!

Ashburn Village Lot by Lot Inspections began in April, starting with the sections closest to the office and working our way up Ashburn Village Boulevard. At the time this article was written over 400 single family and townhome lots had been inspected. If you happen to receive a letter stating a violation exists and you have questions concerning the violation, please call the office. We are always here to answer your questions. One of the most common violations we noted was the storage of trash cans and recycle bins in front of a property. Please remember to store your cans and bins to the rear of your property or in a garage if you have one. Other violations included rake boards, gable trim and other trim needing paint, as well as siding that needs to be cleaned. There have been other violations noted, however these have been the most common. If you have any questions concerning a violation letter, or just have a question in general please call us at 703-723-7910 and we will be happy to assist you.

Important Disclosure Package Information The Association reminds all Village property owners who sell their property to request a Disclosure Package as early as possible. Please do not wait until you are ready to go to settlement! It takes approximately 14 days from the date of your request/order to receive your package. A Disclosure Package is certified for six months. This package includes information essential to a purchaser making an informed decision. The fee for a package is $100.00 for a single-family home or townhome and $50.00 for a condominium. For-Sale-By-Owner properties are also required by Virginia Statute to order a package and provide it to a potential buyer. To order a package or for more information, contact Maggie Graham, Covenants Assistant at (703) 7237910, x107. The Ashburn Villager

Update on Facilities & Grounds Do not be fooled by the cold snap; Spring is here! We have completed the clean up, mulching and weed control in Common areas. If any areas have been missed, please give us a call or e-mail. Contact Martin Graves at (703) 723-7910 X 101 mgraves@ashburnvillage.org or Mike Roberts at (703) 723-7910 X 105 mroberts@ashburnvillage.org. The upcoming projects we are planning for this spring are exciting. The focus this month includes the Illumination project and the Playground replacement in Section 31 on Tavern Drive. Illumination Project We are working with a lighting consultant to bring recommendations to the Ashburn Village Board of Directors for the May / June Meeting. The lighting consultant is focusing on the following areas: entrance features at Ashburn Road (Route 641) and Farmwell Road (Route 625), the Lakes Recreation Center and the Sports Pavilion pathway.

Playground Relocation We are in the process of getting neighborhood input on the replacement/relocation of the playground off of Tavern Drive (by the W & OD trail). Vandalism issues have plagued the current location. The Board of Directors will discuss this issue during the regularly scheduled May 22nd meeting at the Lakes Recreation Center. Please e-mail, call or attend the board meeting to express your preference for relocating the playground to a new location closer to Tavern Drive.

One of the last parks in Ashburn Village is being built in Section 37A at the intersection of Gloucester Parkway and Glenburn Terrace (east of Farmwell Station Middle School). To date, the extensive plans include a shelter, two age-appropriate fenced playgrounds, a network of trails, and landscaping. Please come see this beautiful passive park. We anticipate completion on Memorial Day weekend.

Getting to Know . . . Crishana Loritsch Crishana is the newest addition to the AVCA Covenants team. You’ll likely see her out and about the Village conducting lot-by-lot inspections. Crishana has a strong background in property management, having worked previously at Cardinal Management and the Shadowood Condo Association. She is also accredited by the Community Associations Institute. In her spare time, Crishana enjoys scrapbooking, reading, and loves to “take tea.” A fourth generation native Washingtonian, Crishana is married to a wonderful man, Berin, has two children, Samantha and Tyler, and a dog, Terry. Samantha is nine years old and is an avid writer and artist. Tyler is fourteen years old and enjoys playing basketball and his guitar. (As a teenage boy, Tyler has a HUGE appetite, and Crishana is eagerly accepting donations to help feed him!) One of Crishana’s favorite stories of past inspections involves a cell phone call that she received while on-

May 1, 2007

site walking a property. She answered the call, which turned out to be from her office. The office staff had received a complaint about a strange woman with a clipboard walking around behind a resident’s home. Crishana asked for the number of the resident who complained so she could follow-up with them immediately. While on the phone with Crishana, the resident indicated that the strange woman was behind their home at that very moment, talking on a cell phone. Crishana looked up at the home and waved at the resident who was looking out the window at her; it turned out that Crishana was the strange woman in question!

VDOT Prepares to Assume Roadway Maintenance Editors Note: Ashburn Village Development Corporation has asked that the following information be published in upcoming editions of The Villager. This information is very important to those homeowners facing VDOT roadway maintenance. Ashburn Village Development Corporation (AVDC) is in the process of turning roads over to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Certain roads in the Village will be maintained by VDOT after their inspection and acceptance and other roads will continue to be maintained by the Association. All townhome streets will be turned over to the Association for maintenance. The turnover of single-family streets is a little bit more complicated. For those roads planned and scheduled to be maintained by VDOT, certain minimum standards must be present (also referred to as Subdivision Street Requirements) before VDOT will assume maintenance responsibility. One of these VDOT requirements is that the VDOT or public right-of-way needs to be unencumbered, free and clear of any and all objects. For residents who will live on VDOT maintained streets, any obstructions, including but not limited to, landscaping, irrigation, decorative walls, edging, etc. in the public right-of-way, will need to be removed. Not certain where the right-of-way is? Here are there easy ways to tell.

Step 1: Walk down your driveway and stop approximately eight feet before you get to your mailbox. Now look down. You should see a paving seam or expansion seam, as it’s sometimes called. That seam separates where the concrete was poured for your driveway from the concrete poured for the driveway apron. If you live in a single-family home, your mailbox will typically be located adjacent to the driveway apron. Step 2: Step across that seam and onto the driveway apron. Now you’re in the VDOT right-of-way. THIS IS NOT YOUR PROPERTY. (You may also want to check your record plat. You will not that your plat – of your personal property – does not show the driveway apron or the strip of land on either side.) Step 3: Look right and look left. If you see any objects in that VDOT right-of-way that are not county, state, or federally mandated (like your mailbox), they will need to be removed before your street can be accepted for maintenance by VDOT. As each area of Village roadway nears inspection with VDOT, affected homeowners will be notified by AVDC of anything in the right-of-way that needs to be removed. Questions regarding VDOT turnover should be directed to Staci Harvey (AVDC) 703-729-2127 or Martin Graves (AVCA) 703-723-7910 x101.

Ashburn Village Community Policing Corner Deputy Specialist Craig Schleiden Spring has sprung in Ashburn Village. I have noticed a marked increase in outdoor activity around the Village, and have talked with many residents as I patrol by bicycle and on foot. It’s nice to finally start seeing green leaves and warm weather again! I hope everyone is enjoying the change in season. As always, as you are out and about, be sure to report suspicious activity to the Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-1021. Here are a few educational reminders for everyone in the community. Child Safety Seat Laws Change! Starting July 1, 2007, the Child Safety Seat law will change. The law will require all children under the age of eight (8), to be secured in a child safety seat restraint device. This means that a child will, at a minimum, need to be in a booster seat until they reach eight years old. This can be waived if the driver carries a written note from a physician stating the reason why (medical reason or weight) it is impractical for the child to be in a safety seat and the child’s name. Virginia Code § 46.2-1095 (a) states: Any person who drives on the highways of Virginia any motor vehicle manufactured after January 1, 1968, shall ensure that any child, up to age eight, whom he transports therein is provided with and properly secured in a child restraint device of a type which meets the standards adopted by the United States Department of Transportation. Further, rearfacing child restraint devices shall be placed in the back seat of a vehicle. In the event the vehicle does not have a back seat, the child restraint device may be placed in the front passenger seat only if the vehicle is either not May 1, 2007

equipped with a passenger side airbag or the passenger side airbag has been deactivated. The Community Policing Unit provides child safety seat inspections and installations on an appointment basis. Unit personnel are also available to discuss concerns and answer questions regarding the changes in the law, and how to best meet the requirements of the code. You can reach Deputy Craig Schleiden at 703-729-0581 x123 or craig.schleiden@loudoun.gov. For more information on child seat safety, surf to: www.safekids.org. Child Safety Seats Save Lives! Fishing Laws The lake and pond water is warming up, and the Sheriff’s Office is beginning to field more calls about fishing in the Village. Residents are reminded that Virginia Code § 29.1-301 (d) requires all fishermen over the age of 16 to obtain a license before fishing in any inland waters in the Commonwealth. This includes all of the lakes and ponds in Ashburn Village. Virginia Code § 29.1-336 provides the penalty of failing to carry a fishing license and is punishable as a Class 4 Misdemeanor. Residents are also reminded that Ashburn Village Governing Documents require all fishermen to carry their resident (Sports Pavilion) identification card while fishing as well. The Sheriff’s Office has been performing checks to ensure compliance with the State Code requirements. Please also observe all Continued on page 46

Child Safety Seat Inspections & Installations The Community Policing unit installs child safety seats and educates parents on the proper installation procedures. We accept appointments at the Ashburn Sports Pavilion, weekdays Tuesdays through Fridays. I also want to give you a heads up about the Children and Teens Book Sale coming up in late June (to coincide with the beginning of the Summer Reading Program). The Ashburn Library Advisory Board (ALAB) will need your donations to make this sale a success, so please hold on to your used books, CD’s, DVD,s and videos and for children and teens until the sale donation period in June. Around the Village Connie Waters Resident Services Manager cwaters@ashburnvillage.org (703) 723-7910, x102 More on Lot by Lot Inspections At the direction of the Ashburn Village Board of Directors, the Lot by Lot inspections commenced in April. The Residential Declaration states: “Each owner shall keep such Owner’s Lot and all improvements located on the Lot in good order, condition and repair and in a clean and sanitary condition, including without limitation all necessary grounds maintenance except as may be otherwise provided in a Supplementary Declaration.”

Rosedale, Clary, Doswell, Ordinary, Aberdeen, Bristow, Mustoe, Harmony, Altavista, Chatham, Catlett, Quiet Walk, Mossy Brook, Cool Fern, and Shady Glen. We plan to complete inspections on all streets in Ashburn Village by the end of June. If you have any questions concerning a violation letter you may have received, please call 703-723-7910 so we may assist you. Lawn Upkeep The grass season is here and some of the chores for maintaining your yard are mowing, trimming bushes and the removal of weeds in flowerbeds. These tasks can be tedious and time consuming. However, it is very important to keep lawns manicured. If the owners of one home on a street do not maintain their yard, this negatively affects the entire street. So please mow your lawns and remove weeds from your flowerbeds to avoid a violation letter this summer.

To give you a heads up on what we will be looking for, I have made a list of some of the items we will be inspecting while performing the Lot by Lot inspections. This list illustrates examples of common violations. • decks in disrepair, peeling and/or chipped paint • siding that is discolored, dirty, in need of repair or replacement • fogged or broken windows • garage doors that are broken or in disrepair • missing house numbers • driveways needing replacement or repair • overgrown lawns and landscaping • cracked or broken sidewalks • mailbox needing paint and/or repair • rake boards that need painting • broken or missing shutters • fencing that needs repair or replacement • rust on chimney cap • storm doors that do not match trim or door color • window and door trim that needs painting or repair • torn or bent window screens • window air conditioning units (these are prohibited) • pet waste that has not been disposed of properly • clutter in yard (example: toys, bikes, etc.) • improvements made to home without application or after denial The areas where the Lot by Lot Inspections have been or will soon be completed are: Afton, Falmouth, Crew, Gala, Chole, Bonlee, Ferncliff, Black Horse, Birds Nest, 18

Lot by Lot Inspections—FAQ’s The 2007 Lot by Lot inspections have begun throughout the community and as with any project of this magnitude, questions arise regarding the process. Below are some frequently asked questions and answers designed to provide our homeowners with a general understanding of the overall process. As always, homeowners are welcome to direct specific questions regarding their individual inspections to the Association’s office. 1. What is a lot by lot inspection? A lot by lot inspection is a visual inspection of the exterior appearance of the property. 2. What is the purpose of the lot by lot inspection? The purpose of the inspection is to maintain the uniform appearance of the community and to ensure homeowners keep their properties in accordance with Association guidelines. 3. Is every home in the community included in the lot by lot inspection process? Every single family and town home is subject to inspection. Apartments and condominiums are not subject to inspection by the Association. 4. How often will lot by lot inspections be performed? The lot by lot inspections will be performed annually. 5. What happens if my home is cited for a violation as a result of the lot by lot inspection? A first notice

May 1, 2007

of violation is sent. If the violations are not abated, a second notice is sent stating a compliance due date. If the violation continues, the homeowner is then called to a hearing before the Board of Directors. 6. What are some of the most common violations cited in the lot by lot inspections? Some of the most common violations are rake boards needs to be painted; trim needs to be painted or replaced; unsightly debris and other items located on property; unauthorized external modifications done to property. 7. What is a rake board? Fascia board? Etc. A rake board is the diagonal trim running along edge of roof shingles. A fascia board is the facing band along the top of a wall just below the roof. For a complete list of glossary terms, please refer to pages 56 and 57 of the Association’s Architectural and Environmental Guidelines. 8. How long do I have to correct the violation? The first notice typically gives two weeks to correct a violation however a homeowner may request additional time by contacting the Association’s office. You may be required to provide an explanation for the request. 9. Can a violation notice be removed from my file once it’s corrected? No. The violation notice remains a part of the file however it is noted as CURED once the violation is corrected. 10.What happens if my home is incorrectly cited for having a violation? The Association staff makes every attempt to avoid this happening however if it does occur, the violation is removed and a correction memo is placed in the unit file.

Village Kids Mother’s Day is May 13th Have you ever wondered if Mother’s Day was celebrated historically? Take a look at these Mother’s Day Facts…

Looking for something special to make Mom for Mother’s Day? Try the Breakfast Tacos recipe below.

Ancient celebrations honoring motherhood:

4 eggs ¼ cup sour cream 4 flour tortillas ½ cup cheddar cheese, shredded 4 strips bacon mild picante sauce

• Ancient Greeks celebrated a holiday in honor of Rhea, the mother of the gods. • Ancient Romans celebrated a holiday in honor of Cybele, a mother goddess. • In the British Isles and Celtic Europe, the goddess Brigid, and later her successor St. Brigid, were honored with a spring Mother’s Day, connected with the first milk of the ewes. Mother’s Day history within the United States: • Anna Jarvis, daughter of Anna Reeves Jarvis, was the power behind the official establishment of Mother’s Day. • Anna swore at her mother’s gravesite in 1905 to dedicate her life to her mother’s project, and establish a Mother’s Day to honor mothers, living and dead. • In 1907, Anna passed out 500 white carnations at her mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia – one for each mother in the congregation. • On May 10, 1908, St. Andrew’s Church in Grafton, West Virginia responded to Anna’s request for a Sunday service honoring mothers. • Also in 1908, the first bill proposing the establishment of Mother’s Day was presented in the U.S. Senate by Nebraska Senator Elmer Burkett. The proposal failed. • In 1909, Mother’s Day services were held in 46 states, plus Canada and Mexico. • In 1912, West Virginia became the first state to adopt an official Mother’s Day. • In 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a Joint Resolution, and President Woodrow Wilson signed it, establishing Mother’s Day, emphasizing women’s role in the family.

Breakfast Tacos

Please note: This recipe requires cooking on a stove. Please check with a parent before you begin. If you are going to fry the bacon, you should ask a parent for help. An easy alternative is to buy pre-cooked bacon at the grocery store. Fry bacon in a skillet. Drain on paper towel, then crumble and set aside. For pre-cooked bacon, simply crumble (if necessary) and set aside. Beat eggs together in a small bowl. Add sour cream and salt and pepper to taste. Pour egg mixture into skillet and cook for a few minutes, then stir with a spatula and continue heating until well cooked. Place scrambled eggs in the middle of the tortilla. Top with crumbled bacon, cheese, sour cream, and picante sauce. Fold over and seal with a little sour cream.

Village Kids Doing Great Things

Wil Carlson, 13, is a 7th grader at Farmwell Station Middle School. Wil has found plenty of opportunities to volunteer in the community as a member of Ashburn Boy Scout Troop 1158. Last year, he assisted with the Special Olympics basketball tournament by helping run the snack stand and refereeing games. This past fall, Wil volunteered at the Ashburn Library’s annual book sale by sorting books and running the cash register. He also helped his troop landscape around the Ashburn Baptist Church, and assisted with several Eagle Scout projects. These have ranged from painting a barn at Morven Park and staining a building at St. David’s Episcopal Church, to building a bridge at Claude Moore Park. Wil volunteers with his family, too, picking up trash around the Village. One especially fulfilling opportunity was helping to harvest vegetables at the Volunteer Farm, located in Woodstock. This farm is affiliated with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, which supplies fresh vegetables to families in the Shenandoah Valley.

Young at Heart – Village Seniors For our first-ever seniors column in The Villager, the featured topic is recommended exercises for older adults. All recommendations, and examples of specific exercises to try within each of the types below, come from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and can be found at: http://nihseniorhealth.gov/exercise/ exercisestotry/01.html. For older adults and seniors who want to stay healthy and independent, the NIH recommends four types of exercises: 1. Strength exercises build older adult muscles and increase your metabolism, which helps to keep your weight and blood sugar in check. 2. Balance exercises build leg muscles, and this helps to prevent falls. According to the NIH, U.S. hospitals have 300,000 admissions for broken hips each year. Many of them are seniors, and falling is often the cause of those fractures. If you are an older adult, balance exercises will help you avoid problems as you get older. And if you are a senior,

28

balance exercises can help you stay independent by helping you avoid the disabilities that could result from falling. 3. Stretching exercises can give you more freedom of movement, which will allow you to be more active during your senior years. Stretching exercises alone will not improve your endurance or strength. 4. Endurance exercises are any activity – walking, jogging, swimming, biking, even raking leaves – that increases your heart rate and breathing for an extended period of time. Build up your endurance gradually, starting with as little as five minutes of endurance activities at a time. Safety First If you are at high risk for any chronic diseases such as heart disease or diabetes, or if you smoke or are obese, you should check first with your doctor before becoming more physically active. In general, men over 40 and women over 50 should check with their doctor before doing vigorous activity. Most older adults, regardless of age or condition, will do just fine in increasing their physical activity to a moderate level.

Amazing Ashburn Seniors One word comes to mind to describe the extraordinary couple brought to you in this month’s Villager – persistent. Carl and Miriam Levine live in the Four Seasons condominium complex within Ashburn Village, and you may know Carl from his work on the Ashburn Village Board of Directors. Carl and Miriam each followed a circuitous path to achieve their goals in life. Their stories show how effective persistence can be in achieving their dreams. Carl had plans to attend Cornell University on scholarship, but his father passed away, and he didn’t want to leave his mother. Instead, he ended up with a scholarship to Brooklyn University. During Carl’s junior year, he had his mind set on getting into the live television business. For two weeks, Carl visited NBC studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza every day asking for an interview. Finally, he got a job with NBC as a page and worked his way up over the years to directing live television broadcasts. Carl also got involved in the theatre, and was directly responsible for converting two movie houses to Broadway theatres. “On Golden Pond” was the first play performed in the New Apollo Theatre on West 43rd Street. Miriam has always had an intense desire to be a pianist. When she was nine years old, a piano teacher heard Miriam playing by ear and suggested to her mother that Miriam should begin taking lessons. Unfortunately, her family couldn’t afford that expense. The teacher then offered to teach Miriam at no charge, but her mother was not comfortable receiving such charity. During Miriam’s teen years, she taught herself to play the piano, and even auditioned at the High School of Music and Arts. Unfortunately, it was not to be, and Miriam’s dreams of being a pianist went unfulfilled. In the meantime, however, Miriam went on to realize a tremendous career as a singer, having opportunities to sing with the Metropolitan Opera in such locations as

Carl and Miriam Levine Carnegie Hall. About three years ago, Miriam decided that it was finally time to begin taking formal piano lessons. As with everything else that she does, Miriam embraced this endeavor wholeheartedly and recently won the special silver cup for her performance at the National Federation of Music Club’s Spring Festival. Carl and Miriam’s first “date” was on March 24, 1967 when they met to talk about her singing as part of productions that Carl was putting on each month at VA hospitals. At the time, Carl was smoking three packs of cigarettes a day! He was smoking during their meeting, and Miriam asked why he smoked so much. Carl explained that it was due to the pressures of working in live television, but he assured Miriam that he had amazing will-power and could quit any time if he wanted to. Miriam’s response was, “I lived in Missouri, show me.” Carl gave all of his remaining cigarettes to the Maitre’d and quit smoking cold-turkey. He hasn’t had a cigarette since! What is this couple’s secret to staying young at heart? They both feel strongly that giving back to the community and participating in philanthropic activities keeps them satisfied and young. Miriam’s advice is to try to do things that truly give you joy in your day’s work. Both Carl and Miriam enjoy exercising at the Sports Pavilion and the clubhouse at the Four Seasons. What do they enjoy about living here in the Village? The tranquility and beauty of Ashburn coupled with “the gorgeous sunsets.” Do you know a Village senior who should be featured in an article in the coming months? Send an email to avca@ashburnvillage.org. We’d love to hear from you. 29

Housing Report March 1 – March 31, 2007 Recent Ashburn Village Home Sales. Home prices improved in March! Seven Single Family homes sold for an average of $572,000, which is up 4% from last month’s average of $548,214. 23 Townhomes sold for an average of $396,046, up 3% from February’s $384,688. Condo prices declined by 18% to $209,950, because the Condos that sold in March were 1BR, 1BA units, and February’s were 2BR, 2BA units. The average price difference between those units in Ashburn in 2007 is over $60,000, which when factored in, could actually point to a 5% increase. The other interesting statistic this month is the increase in the number of Townhomes sold; 8 in February and 23 in March. The total number of homes sold continues to increase, from 9 in January to 19 in February to 32 in March of 2007. Home Sales 2006 – 2007 Comparison. The average home price in March of 2007 was still down from March of 2006. Single Family home prices were down 8.5% from $625,100 to $572,000. Townhome prices were also down, by 7%, from $427,300 to $396,046. And the average price of a Condo was significantly lower by 28%, from $291,833 to $209.950. But again,

30

this year the Condos were 1BR, 1BA, and last year’s were 2BR, 2BA. So again, if you factor in the $60K mentioned above, for the unit type differential, one could say that the decrease is only 7.5%. The average number of Days on the Market for all three home types substantially increased over 2006, from 67 to 132. 2006 - Third-highest year in Home Sales. 6.48 million homes sold last year, making 2006 the thirdhighest year on record! 2005 holds the record, with 7.075 million sales, while 2004 came in second with 6.779 million homes sold. Stability Takes Hold. By the end of 2005, home prices were inflated. By the end of 2006, home sales were down 8.4%. All forecasts are that 2007 will be better. Already there seems to be a much better balance between Buyers and Sellers than there was in 2006. The NAR forecasts a modest quarterly gain throughout 2007, even though the numbers will fall slightly (1.2%) from those of 2006. Affordability conditions are improving, and there are signs that the correction is behind us, and that a year of stability lies ahead. – Realtor Magazine – Mar 2007 Jamie Munizza, RE/MAX Ashburn Village Resident 703/858-5800

The Ashburn Villager

The Critter Corner by Dr. Steve Velling Ashburn Village Animal Hospital As of today (written April 11th), the latest on the pet food recall is that millions of cans and pouches of contaminated cat and dog food have been pulled off the shelves, and the current thinking is that contaminated wheat gluten, shipped over from China and used at Menu Foods for the processing in dozens of brands of cat and dog food, is the culprit. The original concern was that rat poison was responsible, but that was discounted by the FDA. We now believe it is melamine, an ingredient in plastic. So with the vast majority of pet owners feeding their pets commercial pet food, what are we to do? How do we handle a crisis that seems out of our control? What should we feed our pets? Well, this case is similar to the poisoned spinach outbreak and the Taco Bell lettuce outbreak from last year. The tainted line of food was identified, the public was alerted, and the product was removed. That’s the simple answer. Some other questions like “why didn’t we know sooner?” and “what are the pet food companies going to do now?” remain to be fully answered. I know that Hill’s Science Diet has pledged to reimburse any pet owner $100 towards any testing on an exposed pet. I also know that these

May 1, 2007

companies will, for the most part, be quite vigilant in testing their products from here on out. Some were good to begin with, but others were not. And it was actually a surprise to me to learn that one huge plant (Menu Foods in Ontario, Canada – see www.menufoods.com for the complete list of recalled food and the latest news) was responsible for even some of the prescription foods that are sold through veterinarians. So what should you feed your pet? Well, in general, you should start by reading the label. Avoid artificial colors and flavors. They exist not for the pet but for the owner. Avoid byproducts. These can include things like blood, bone, chicken heads, or uninspected tissue. You want to feed meat, not meat byproducts. Finally, you want to avoid “fillers, meals, and preservatives” as much as possible. So this means feeding either a “premium” pet food, or making it yourself. I tell people it’s okay to feed table scraps now and then, but not junk food. And be careful that Fido and Fluffy don’t get overweight. Studies show that overweight pets, on average, live 2 years less than pets that are slim and trim. I hope that helps, and I pray that such an outbreak doesn’t happen again. Our four-legged friends depend on us to take care of them. Till next time,

Dr. Steve

Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department www.ashburnfirerescue.org

Bring your friends & family!

Choking Prevention A frequent 911 call we receive at AVFRD is “child choking”—a thought that strikes terror in the heart of any parent. Research tells us this is one of the most common home emergencies for children under the age of 14, but adults are not immune!

Enjoy great music, cotton candy, snow cones, ice cream, moon bounce, fire truck rides, Air Care helicopter, meet a firefighter, station tours. Learn to call 911, experience our new safety “smoke house” & many other safety demonstrations.

Follow these simple guidelines to reduce you and your family’s risk: • Place infants on their back to sleep. • Look around your home for anything small enough to fit through a toilet paper tube. Coins, marbles, grapes, etc. could cause a young child to choke. • Watch children when they are playing and eating. • Avoid small, round or hard foods, such as hot dogs, grapes or popcorn for children under the age of 6 years. If you do, cut them into very small pieces. • Chew your food & don’t talk with your mouth full —These come directly from Mom! • Learn the Heimlich maneuver—part of any basic CPR class—a simple skill that can save a life if a person is choking.

Join us for the fun! Admission, refreshments, entertainment–FREE We will be once again featuring a “Silent Auction”. This is your chance to bid on valuable items donated by businesses & members of the community. Remember no credit cards accepted.

Upcoming Events at AVFRD Pancake Breakfast – the FIRST Sunday of every month; May 6, June 3, No breakfast in July, August 5, etc. Breakfast is served from 8:00 a.m. until Noon. 32

Who Would Have Thought It? You’ve probably seen them around a pond or lake and may not have given them a second thought, but they are out there: Cattails (Typha latifolia). They can be desirable or undesirable, depending on your viewpoint. I confess I view them on the positive side, but I’ll tell you about the pros AND cons. Pros: • Provide nesting habitat for blackbirds and some duck species • Provide cover for fish and ducks to feed and rear their young • Help prevent erosion of dams and pond banks • Are a great natural place to stay hidden while wildlife/bird watching • Aesthetically are a great species to sketch, paint or photograph Also, Native Americans have used Cattails for a variety of purposes, such as making mats and baskets, toys (floating ducks) and dolls. They also made flour from the roots, the sap between the leaves was used to thicken soups and broths, and parts of the Cattail could be eaten raw in salads. As medicine, the pollen could

May 1, 2007

be placed on cuts to control bleeding, and parts of the plant are an antiseptic. The mashed root could even be used as a toothpaste! And these are just a few uses. Cons: • Reproduce quickly and in shallow areas, can dominate other plants, reducing the diversity of habitat for other organisms • Can get in the way of boaters, swimmers and other recreational pursuits • An excessive amount of Cattails can hasten the aging (eutrophication) of a lake or pond in which sediments and nutrients can build up more quickly. This changes the whole character, chemistry and life forms that are able to live in that body of water (for better or worse) depending on your viewpoint! So…the next time you are walking around the Village and see Cattails, determine for yourself whether you view them as “good” or “bad” (or maybe somewhere in between); it depends largely on how you view their role. Personally, I enjoy them for their wildlife benefits, their aesthetic qualities and diversity of uses. You’ve got to admit, they are a versatile plant at the very least. CONGRATULATIONS! COLLEGE BOUND! AVSP’s own Julie Hayden and Terri Rath, both Aqua Aerobics and Deep Water Instructors, brought home titles and pending records from the USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston. Rath was a member of the record breaking 4X400M team while Hayden earned her first two American records since becoming a US Citizen in August. Congrats to both Julie & Terri!

AVSP After School Activities Program (ASAP) and RISE Camp Counselor Jamil Snyder, received a fouryear, full academic scholarship to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. After receiving twelve academic offers from various schools throughout the country, according to Jamil the decision to accept the offer was an easy one to make. Excited about attending one of the most prestigious universities in the country, Jamil is doubly excited to be close to home. Jamil has been with the ASAP program since the second grade, as a participant, volunteer and as staff. “I am so excited for Jamil and all of my counselors as they enter into this new phase of their lives. Community Policing Corner (cont’d from page 13)

rules and regulations as posted at all of the waterways and in your governing documents. Licenses can be obtained from any local sporting goods store. Solicitor Season It is the season for door-to-door salesmen to begin knocking on your doors during dinner time. The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors realizes that some of these individuals can be aggressive and intimidating for some residents. Loudoun County Codified Ordinance 828.04 requires registration with the Sheriff prior to peddling or soliciting within the county. The individuals should have a Sheriff’s Office solicitor’s license in their possession at all times while conducting business. This license should display their personal information (includes a description of the person), employer information, a description of the services they are selling and the signature of the Sheriff. Many solicitors also carry business identification; however this does not discharge them from complying with the requirements of 828.04. In addition, Codified Ordinance 828.08 provides for a standard of conduct that must be adhered to by doorto-door salesmen. This includes identifying themselves when entering upon another’s property, leaving the property when requested by the homeowner and conducting themselves in an “orderly and lawful manner” at all times. In addition, sales may not be conducted door-to-door between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. Residents are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office Non-Emergency phone number at 703-777-1021 if they believe a salesman is not complying with the county ordinance. A deputy will be dispatched to the area to investigate the complaint. Questions about the ordinance may be directed to the Community Policing Office at 703-729-0581 x123.
