I

n these times of geopolitical uncertainty, enterprises can have their development impacted. Laico Management should not have escaped this fact. However, the early implementation of a recovery plan covering offered services and their production as well as more efficient management of internal resources (both human and financial) has allowed our enterprise to bear the weight of the crisis and, even better, to keep developing. 2016 was therefore

significant for us due to the opening of two new prestigious hotels: Ledger Plaza N’Djamena (Chad) and Ledger Plaza Bissau (Guinea Bissau).

We will also prepare to celebrate by the end of the year the opening of the most beautiful business hotel in Tunis, located in the heart of the Tunisian capital on Avenue Mohamed V. With this, we will continue our development to better ensure the loyalty of our customers and employees.

n ces temps d’incertitudes géopolitiques, les repères des entreprises se trouvent bouleversés, et leur développement impacté. Laico Management aurait dû ne pas échapper à cette règle. Cependant, la mise en place précoce d’un plan de relance englobant les services offerts et leur production ainsi qu’une gestion plus efficace des ressources internes (humaines et financières) a permis à notre entreprise de tenir le choc de la crise et, mieux encore, de se développer.

e Laico Ouaga 2000 a été élu meilleur hôtel du Burkina Faso du mois de février (2016). La remise de ce prix a été effectuée lors d’une soirée de gala organisée par le ministère du Tourisme et de la Culture en présence de nombreux professionnels du secteur.

Ces derniers mois, l’hôtel a compté plusieurs évènements dont la visite du Secrétaire Général des Nations Unies, M. Ban Ki-Moon, et la fête de la femme organisée le 8 mars en l’honneur du personnel féminin de l’hôtel.

he Laico Ouaga 2000 was voted the best hotel in Burkina Faso in February(2016). The award ceremony took place at a gala evening organized by the Minister for Tourism and Culture and attended by numerous professionals from the industry. These last few months, the hotel has hosted several events such as the visit of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr Ban Ki-Moon, and the women’s festival organized the 8th of March in honor of the female staff of the hotel.

Ledger Plaza Bahari Beach Outside catering Ledger Plaza Bahari Beach is developing its outside catering service. Increasingly sought after, the banquet team keeps successfully pulling off Outside Catering operations in the embassy residences as well as major events taking place in Dar es Salaam, such as the Turkish national holiday in the ambassador’s residence.

This time, in collaboration with the Turkish embassy, the hotel provided the catering service for the international golf tournament organized by Turkish Airlines which took place in the Gymkhana sports complex, in the city center.

The attending guests were able to taste dishes from local, international and of course Turkish cuisine: as a matter of fact our team has mastered the specifics of this cuisine, as it showed by organizing a week of Turkish gastronomy in 2014.

Cette fois, en collaboration avec l’ambassade turque, l’hôtel a assuré le service Catering lors du tournoi international de golf organisé par Turkish Airlines et qui a eu lieu au complexe sportif de Gymkhana, au centre-ville.

Les clients présents ont pu déguster des mets de la cuisine locale, internationale et surtout turque : notre équipe maîtrise en effet les spécificités de cette cuisine, comme elle l’a montré en organisant une semaine gastronomique turque en 2014.

The company invited over 250 guests from among its customers to enjoy an unforgettable day. Starting in the morning with activities on the beachfront and the swimming pool terrace, finishing with a great cocktail reception at Mapenzi Bar. The music was a great success with a renowned band as well as a disco party.

La compagnie a invité plus de 250 personnes parmi ses clients afin de profiter d’une journée inoubliable. Celle-ci a commencé dès le matin, avec des activités au bord de la plage et sur la terrasse piscine, pour finir par un grand cocktail dînatoire au Mapenzi Bar. La musique était au rendez-vous avec une troupe musicale de renommée ainsi qu’une soirée disco.

Workshop Koica Africa The Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) organized its annual workshop for Africa in the Ledger Plaza Bahari Beach. All the agency’s directors came from all African countries to define their strategies for Africa over the next three years. After three days of meetings, the workshop was closed with a cocktail evening accompanied by a Korean band to entertain all the guests.

L’agence internationale coréenne de coopération internationale Koica a organisé son workshop annuel pour l’Afrique au Ledger Plaza Bahari Beach. Tous les directeurs de l’agence sont venus de tous les pays africains pour définir ses stratégies pour l’Afrique pour les trois années à venir. A l’issue de trois jours de réunions, le workshop s’est achevé avec un cocktail dînatoire accompagné par une troupe musicale coréenne qui a fait vibrer tous les invités.

Ledger Plaza Bahari Beach Marines Ball

It has now become a tradition for the United States Embassy in Dar es Salaam to organize the ball commemorating the anniversary of the founding of the Marines in the Ledger Plaza. It is the biggest event of the year organized by the American Embassy.

His Excellency Mr Mark B Childress, United States Ambassador, invited the most senior US officials from Dar es Salaam as well as all the military attachés from friendly countries represented in Tanzania. The general of the Marines in the region was also present to open the event.

C’est devenu désormais une tradition pour l’Ambassade des Etats-Unis d’Amérique à Dar es Salaam d’organiser au Ledger Plaza le bal commémorant l’anniversaire de la création des forces des Marines. Il s’agit de la plus grande fête organisée sur l’année par l’ambassade américaine.

Son Excellence Mr Mark B. Childress, ambassadeur des Etats-Unis, a invité les plus hauts responsables américains résidant à Dar es Salaam ainsi que tous les attachés militaires des pays amis représentés en Tanzanie. Le général des forces des Marines dans la région a également été présent pour lancer l’événement.

Espérance Sportive de Tunis

During the first leg of the round of 16, the Esperance Sportive de Tunis (EST) came to Dar Es Salaam to play against the local club FC Azam. The club’s management chose to stay at the Ledger Plaza Bahari Beach, from the 8th to the 10th of April, like the Etoile Sportive du Sahel in 2015 and other major clubs (Côte d’Ivoire, the veterans from Real Madrid, the veterans from FC Barcelona…).

The team had a very enjoyable stay in the hotel, which is equipped with all the necessary facilities to host the greatest football teams.

Dans le cadre des huitièmes de finale en match aller, l’Espérance Sportive de Tunis s’est déplacée à Dar Es Salaam pour jouer contre le club local du FC Azam.

La direction du club a choisi de séjourner au Ledger Plaza Bahari Beach, du 8 au 10 avril, à l’instar de l’Etoile Sportive du Sahel en 2015 et d’autres grands clubs (Côte d’Ivoire, les vétérans du Real Madrid, les vétérans de FC Barcelone…). L’équipe a passé un très bon séjour à l’hôtel, qui dispose de toutes les installations nécessaires pour héberger les plus grandes équipes de football.

Sophonie :

A

n electrician and in charge of maintenance, Sophonie Ngambaka Moukiama was undoubtedly destined to “bring light” to those around him… as did his namesake, the biblical prophet Zephaniah.

Born in 1978, a husband and a father, he received his qualification in industrial maintenance to start his career in 2004 within the hotel which became, in 2009, the Ledger Plaza Maya Maya. In the role of electrician and responsible for maintenance, he will be an active participant in the implementation of the hotel’s energy efficiency system under the guidance of Technical Director, Mr Ben Smaïl. Meanwhile, his superiors and colleagues will tell you that Sophonie’s good qualities are also down to his personality: active, responsive and above all joyful.

E

lectricien et chargé de la maintenance, Sophonie Ngambaka Moukiama avait sans doute une prédestination à « faire la lumière » autour de lui… comme son homonyme, prophète de la Bible. Né en 1978, marié et père d’un enfant, il décroche son brevet en maintenance industrielle pour entamer en 2004 sa carrière au sein d’un hôtel qui deviendra, en 2009, le Ledger Plaza Maya Maya. Maintenu au poste d’électricien et de chargé de la maintenance, il y participera activement à la mise en place du système d’économie d’énergie de l’hôtel sous la houlette du Directeur technique, M. Ben Smaïl. Cependant, ses supérieurs et ses collègues vous diront que les qualités de Sophonie tiennent aussi à sa personnalité : actif, réactif et surtout jovial.

The Malian Artist L’artiste malien

Moussa Diallo As part of his African tour, the famous Malian artist Moussa Diallo performed a series of concerts in Tanzania, between Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar.

Moussa Diallo was the guest of honor of the Spanish gastronomic festival which took place in the

Bahari Beach. He played there with his musicians during the

festival opening ceremony, and charmed all the guests with his musical performance.

Born

in Paris to a Danish mother and a Malian father, would you say that your music is a reflection of this mixture?

I grew up in Mali until I was seventeen years old and that’s where I took my first steps into music.

My parents didn’t really influence my vocation. I was sixteen when I bought my first guitar – it was in 1971. I was, at the time, very inspired by all that came from Europe and the USA: Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, James Brown and others. In the eighties, I started to get interested in African artists such as Fela Kuti, Salif Keita, Osibisa…

your latest album, Blues for 333 saints, a synthesis of your musical journey?

Yes, my last album is a synthesis of musical influences, both modern and traditional. Traditional Malian music inspires me very much, but I’m also very impulsive when I compose. I love to create in the moment, without letting myself be too influenced by musical trends.

You

are also a storyteller, designer of children’s books, a puppeteer on occasion… why this interest in the world of childhood?

I grew up in a time when stories were still popular.

The television still didn’t exist in Mali, and I loved to listen to my grandma when she would tell us stories around a wood fire. I’ve already spent fifteen years traveling Scandinavian primary schools with success to share that heritage. I love children and I like to amuse them with stories, that are also educational and interactive.

What’s new for 2016?

2016 has started off very well. The third edition of Spot on Mali Music took place in January in Bamako.

I’m in the middle of coordinating the fourth which will take place the 7th and 8th of October (1). In February, I visited twenty six classes in Swedish schools and gave seminars on African culture, tolerance, immigration… Afterwards, the same students came to hear my trio in concert. We did ten concerts in five days with more than 2,500 school children. 2016 will also see the release of a new CD where I tell the history of Soundiata Keita, “The Lion Prince”, through music that I have written. Other than that, ten short books of stories for children will come out in autumn, followed by a tour of Danish schools. Concerts with my trio and quintet are also on the menu (2).

Blues for 333 saints, est-il une synthèse de votre démarche musicale ?

Oui, mon dernier album est une synthèse des influences musicales aussi bien modernes que traditionnelles. La musique traditionnelle malienne m’inspire beaucoup, mais je suis aussi très impulsif quand je compose. J’aime beaucoup créer dans l’instant, sans trop me laisser influencer par le trend musical.

Vous êtes aussi conteur, concepteur de livres pour enfants, marionnettiste à l’occasion… pourquoi cet intérêt pour le monde de l’enfance ?

Dans le cadre de sa tournée africaine, le célèbre artiste malien Moussa Diallo a effectué une série de concerts en Tanzanie, entre Dar Es Salaam et Zanzibar. Moussa Diallo était l’invité d’honneur du festival gastronomique espagnol qui a eu lieu au Ledger Plaza Bahari Beach. Il y a joué avec sa troupe musicale lors de la cérémonie du lancement du festival, et a enchanté tous les invités par sa prestation musicale.

L’occasion pour nous de le rencontrer et de lui poser quelques questions.

père malien, diriez-vous que votre musique est le reflet de ce métissage ?

J’ai grandi au Mali jusqu’à l’âge de dix-sept ans et j’y ai fait mes premiers pas dans la musique. Mes parents n’ont pas vraiment eu d’influence sur moi par rapport à ma vocation. J’avais seize ans quand j’ai acheté ma première guitare – c’était en 1971. J’étais, à l’époque, très inspiré par tout ce qui venait d’Europe et des USA : Jimi Hendrix, les Rolling Stones, James Brown et d’autres.

J’ai grandi à une époque où les contes étaient encore populaires. La télé n’existait pas encore au Mali, et j’adorais écouter ma grand-mère quand elle nous racontait des contes autour d’un feu de bois. Ça fait déjà quinze ans que je sillonne avec succès les écoles primaires en Scandinavie pour partager cet héritage. J’adore les enfants et j’aime les divertir à travers des contes, qui sont aussi éducatifs et interactifs.

Quelle est votre actualité pour 2016 ?

2016 a très bien démarré. La troisième édition de Spot On Mali Music a eu lieu en janvier à Bamako. Je suis en train de coordonner la quatrième qui va avoir lieu les 7 et 8 octobre (1). En février, j’ai visité vingt-six classes dans des écoles en Suède et j’y ai fait des séminaires sur la culture africaine, la tolérance, l’immigration... Après, les mêmes élèves sont venus écouter mon trio en concert.

Nous avons fait dix concerts en cinq jours avec plus de 2500 élèves. 2016 verra aussi la sortie d’un nouveau CD où je conte l’histoire de Soundiata Keita, ‘The Lion Prince’, à travers une musique que j’ai écrite. En outre, dix petits livres de contes pour enfants sortiront en automne, suivis d’une tournée dans des écoles danoises. Des concerts avec mon trio et mon quintet sont également à l’affiche (2).

T

he former Upper Volta, gaining its independence in 1960 and baptized Burkina Faso in 1984*, is a veritable melting pot of ethnicities (over sixty), customs, languages and religions. Today it draws from them its strength and its originality.

Despite limited resources and landlocked borders, its inhabitants show astounding dynamism and lust for life.

As a matter of fact, the country has a rich cultural heritage, a remarkable variety of customs and some of the most diverse handicrafts in West Africa.

A richness which can be seen, notably, via the impressive diversity of Burkinabé masks.

A land of plains with some gently rolling hills and valleys, Burkina Faso nevertheless offers, in its southwestern territory, a massif where the highest

point of the country can be found (749 meters).

This region offers spectacular landscapes such as the Peaks of Sindou, the cliffs of Bandora, or even Lake Tangrela and its hippopotamuses. Elsewhere in the country, animal lovers can observe lions, elephants and gazelles in the numerous national parks and nature reserves ; the principal parks are Arly, Nazinga, W and Deux Bales.

The Burkinabé towns and cities are not lacking in attractions with their markets, museums, shops and craft centers. If Ouagadougou, with its biennial Fespaco, is the capital of African cinema, and its locals or Ouagalais are the kings of two wheels, Bobo Dioulasso is also worth a visit for its monuments, its house of culture and its mosque in the Sudanese style… and of course, because according to the locals, you can taste the best mangoes in the world!

* : With the name “Burkina Faso” for the country and “Burkinabè” for its inhabitants, the country made the choice to integrate the three most widespread languages in the country to make them the three national languages, along with French. In fact, Burkina signifies integrity in the Mooré language, and Faso, taken from Diola, means country; meanwhile Bè is a word from Foulfouldé, the language of the Peuls, and means inhabitant.

Crafts Artisanat

he crafts industry is a sector of prime importance in the economy of the country.

It represents 30% of the GDP and is ranked second in terms of labor-providing sectors, after agriculture. It has to be said that the Burkinabé are particularly good at making objects from all possible materials: bronze, pottery, basketry, leather… This gives Burkina Faso one of the richest and most diverse crafts industries in the region: batik, carved wood, bronze objects (worked with the “lost wax” technique”), and above all a wide variety of musical instruments such as the balafon, the djembé and the bendré.

All through the country, these products can be admired in museums, in boutiques and in centers dedicated to handicrafts.

A handicrafts biennial (SIAO) is held in Ouagadougou; its 14th edition will take place this year from the 28th of October to the 6th of November.

’artisanat est un secteur de première importance dans l’économie du pays. Il représente 30% du PIB et se classe au deuxième rang des secteurs pourvoyeurs de main d’œuvre, après l’agriculture. Il faut dire que les Burkinabè sont particulièrement doués pour la fabrication d’objets dans toutes les matières possibles : bronze, poterie, vannerie, cuir… Cela confère au Burkina un des artisanats les plus riches et les plus variés de la région : batik, bois sculpté, objets en bronze (travaillés selon la technique de la “cire perdue”), et surtout une grande variété d’instruments de musique comme le balafon, le djembé et le bendré.

Partout dans le pays, on pourra admirer ces productions dans des musées, des boutiques et des centres dédiés à l’artisanat. Une biennale de l’artisanat (SIAO) se tient à Ouagadougou ; sa quatorzième édition se déroulera cette année du 28 octobre au 6 novembre.

Ouagadougou Ouagadougou

uagadougou, the capital, is the largest city in the country with 1.6 million inhabitants, the Ouagalais. Founded in the 11th century, the ancient Kumbemtinga or “Land of Princes” was baptised “Wogdgo” by the Mossi… and later became Ouagadougou. If you are passing through Ouaga, make sure not to miss the museum which holds an extraordinary collection of masks (see page 25).

The artisanal village, which brings together around 500 artisans across 50 workshops, is definitely worth a visit. You will leave with a bronze statuette, a piece of batik or a balafon, an instrument to share with everyone. At night, Ouaga moves to the rhythm of coupé-décalé and other danceable music.

Le village artisanal, qui regroupe quelque 500 artisans répartis dans 50 ateliers, mérite largement une visite.

Reserves : Arly and Nazinga Réserves : Arly et Nazinga

rly National Park (or Arly Total Reserve) is located in the southeast of the country, in the Tapoa region, more than 450 km from Ouagadougou. Along with the W Park, which is adjacent to it, it is one of the largest natural reserves in Africa; a true refuge for a wide variety of wild animal species. It is home to a great number of elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hippos, baboons and, of course, lions. Birdwatchers can observe guinea fowl, green pigeons and rock hens among other birds.

The other reserve in the south of Burkina is Nazinga, close to Pô, on the Ghanian frontier. It has the largest population of elephants in West Africa (five to six hundred individuals). Stretching across 133 kilometers with an area of 91,300 hectares, it also has a hunting zone, separated from the area where the animals live by a buffer zone. As well as the elephants, the reserve is rich in fauna (antelope, warthogs, monkeys… ) along with a multitude of birds such as parrots, youyous and long-tailed glossy starlings.

e Parc National d’Arly (ou réserve totale d’Arly) est situé au sud-est du pays, dans la région de Tapoa, à plus de 450 km de Ouagadougou. Avec le parc du W, qui lui est limitrophe, Arly est l’un des plus grands parcs naturels d’Afrique ; un véritable refuge pour la plupart des espèces de faune sauvage. Il accueille un grand nombre d’éléphants, girafes, buffles, hippopotames, babouins et, surtout, lions. Les ornithologues amateurs peuvent y observer pintades, pigeons verts, poules de roches et bien d’autres volatiles.

L’autre réserve du sud du Burkina est celle de Nazinga, près de Pô, à la frontière ghanéenne. Elle comprend la plus grande population d’éléphants d’Afrique de l’Ouest (cinq à six cents individus).

S’étendant sur 133 kilomètres avec une superficie de 91 300 hectares, elle comprend aussi une zone de chasse, séparée de l’espace où vivent les animaux par une zone tampon. Outre les éléphants, la réserve contient une faune très riches (antilopes, phacochères, singes…) ainsi qu’une multitude d’oiseaux tels que perroquets, youyou ou merle à longue queue.

he second biggest city in the country, it is a commercial hub between Burkina and the neighbouring countries. It is also a cultural capital where the biennial SNC (National Culture Week) is held. Known for its potters, its ironworkers and above all its makers of musical instruments, the city is the capital of the balafon and has opened a museum “of the music of yesterday and today”.

Among its other attractions, don’t miss the great cathedral, the old mosque of Dioulassoba and the old quarters of Kibidwé, notable for the many artisans that can be found there. Bobo Dioulasso has an international airport. Its train station is worth a visit for its colonial architecture.

round one hundred kilometers from Bobo Dioulasso, the Banfora region offers a striking contrast compared to the Sahelian north of the country. Here, everything is fresh and green. Twenty minutes from the village of Banfora, visitors can cool down in the waterfalls of Karfiguela, cross Lake Telgrela in a canoe, or plan a visit to Sindou, 40 kilometers from Banfora. There a striking sight awaits you: the Peaks of Sindou, which rise up to the sky like giant needles; these peaks are in fact the work of wind and water erosion. It is also in this region that the highest point of the country can be found, Ténakourou (749 meters).

ocated in the Banfora region, about forty kilometers south of Sindou, this village perched upon the rocks is an impressive sight. Abandoned in 1980 by its inhabitants who settled on the plains, today it is a veritable museum of what used to be the everyday life of its inhabitants: jars, various utensils… And these very same inhabitants, and their descendants, today oversee the preservation of the village. Organized into an association, they manage the dwelling site set up nearby themselves and take responsibility to guide the visitors.

he Gourounsi, a name that groups together the Nuni and Kassena, settled all around the city of Pô. 30 kilometers to the southeast of Pô lies the stunning village of Tiébélé and its royal courtyard, inhabited by the Kassena, one of the most ancient ethnicities of the country. Stunning for the architecture of its cases or traditional dwellings, nested inside one another, and above all for its decoration, carried out by the women: the cases are decorated with geometric patterns, protective symbols and clan totems.

he great number of ethnic groups in Burkina Faso has made sure that, even more than in other parts of Africa, an impressive variety of masks has arisen. In Burkina as in the rest of the continent, the mask plays a religious role. It defines, for each of the ethnic groups, the relationship with the divine and is considered a divine essence. In every case it expresses what is considered sacred to each group or ethnicity.

As well as its religious role, the masks play a certain political role. In fact, during the mask displays, the group which holds them, a sort of fraternity known as the Society of Masks, becomes dominant in terms of political power; a power limited, therefore, to the ceremony of presentation of the masks.

To admire the Burkinabé masks, first there is the National Museum of Ouagadougou; but they can also be seen in private museums in Manega, Boromo and Salenzo.

e grand nombre d’ethnies au Burkina Faso a donné naissance, plus qu’ailleurs en Afrique, à une impressionnante variété de masques. Au Burkina comme ailleurs sur le continent, le masque joue un rôle religieux. Il définit, pour chacune des ethnies, la relation avec le divin et est considéré comme d’essence divine. En plus de son rôle religieux, le masque joue un certain rôle politique. En effet, durant les sorties de masques, le groupe qui en est détenteur, sorte de confrérie appelée aussi Société des masques, devient prépondérant par rapport au pouvoir politique ; un pouvoir limité, donc, à la cérémonie de présentation des masques.

Pour admirer les masques burkinabè, il y a d’abord le Musée national de Ouagadougou ; on peut aussi en voir dans des musées privés à Manega, Boromo et Salenzo.

9 an open-air Laoungo museum un musée à ciel ouvert

ransforming a natural site of granite rock into a place of artistic expression for sculptors across Africa and elsewhere: such was the concept of this original space found not far from Ouagadougou. Beginning in 1989 from a foundation of regular events attended by sculptors, the site became, as the years went by and as sculptures were completed, a veritable open-air museum.

Open to the public (closed on Mondays), it is located 30 kilometers northeast of Ouagadougou in the direction of Fada.

African Masterpieces

The exhibition event dedicated to African Masterpieces will be taking place until the 21st of December in the Dapper Museum in Paris. 130 major traditional works of art from West Africa and Central Africa will be shown for enthusiasts and art lovers to admire. These pieces have “among them a good number which are essential references of African arts and have no equal anywhere in the world”.

Chefs-d’œuvre d’Afrique

L’exposition événement autour des chefs-d’œuvre d’Afrique se tient jusqu’au 21 décembre 2016 au musée Dapper à Paris. Ce sont 130 œuvres majeures des arts traditionnels d’Afrique de l’Ouest et d’Afrique Centrale qui s’offriront à la contemplation des amateurs. Ces œuvres sont « pour un bon nombre d’entre elles des références incontournables des arts africains et n’ont aucun équivalent dans le monde ».
