Institute for Pain Research & Care Seed Grants Opioid Reduction in Orthopedic Surgery (OREOS): A Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial in Total Knee Replacement Patients Primary Investigator: Harsha Shanthanna, MD, PhD, FRCPC Start Date: 2022
Brief Overview and Progress to Date
“The trial aims to establish feasibility of a larger multi centred trial.” - Dr. Harsha Shanthanna
The main objective of this pilot trial is to assess the feasibility of a multicomponent pathway on patients having elective total knee arthroplasty, while the clinical objectives are to determine the effects of the pathway on opioid-free pain control, persisting pain and opioid use, functional knee outcomes, quality of life, and return to function. Patients in the intervention group will undergo a multicomponent intervention pathway that will be facilitated by an intervention coordinator linking each patient and their surgical/ perioperative team. We have completed recruitment and surgery of all study patients and we are working on data collection to ensure minimal loss to follow up.
