“I was walking along the tracks by the creek today,” says sixteen-year-old Emily. Emily certainly still spends plenty of time in Spring Gully. She plays soccer in the women’s seniors team, that has had a hugely competitive season in the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League. Emily started playing for Spring Gully United when she was seven. She followed in her big brother Will’s footsteps who started at six, Will wore the red and white for 12-years and has only stopped playing this year because he moved to Melbourne to study. “A lot of really good soccer players come out of Spring Gully,” says Emily. “Kids go to Melbourne and get to play in the National Premier League.” It seems the nurturing, active coaching and initiatives run by the Club are instrumental in this success. “They do it so well (the committee),” says Kristen, “the kids aren’t just players, they build them up, get them involved, run courses like referee courses to keep them involved, they organise family fun days. The kids start so young it becomes part of their childhood. It’s a

welcoming environment, the younger kids look up to the older ones – and it’s just so pretty down there by the creek, why wouldn’t they want to spend time there?” Emily and Will, like many soccer enthusiasts took up futsal in the summer to complement the spring soccer season. Both were scouted to participate in Victorian and national teams. Emily’s team came second at the National Championships in Sydney, made it to the semifinals in Brisbane the next year, and then went on to play in Scotland, Wales and England. Following a similar trajectory, Will travelled to Brazil and Italy with futsal and attended the Rio 2016 Olympics soccer events while there. Meanwhile, further up the hill sixteen-year-old cycling enthusiast Matthew Saxon knows the mountain biking trails around Spring Gully like the back of his hand. Matthew is a member of the Bendigo Mountain Bike Club and says, “there are at least a couple of hundred people who would actively ride these trails, aged from 8 to 80+. Especially now with e-bikes, a lot of older people are out there with us.”

12

| SPRING 2021

Matthew gets out on the trails almost daily. “It’s a godsend during home-schooling,” says his mum, Paula, “as soon as period five is done, he is on the bike and gone.” The bike trails are all found on Strava, the graded mountain biking trails splinter through the Bendigo National Park skirting from Flora Hill to Spring Gully, and include the area around the One Tree Hill lookout tower with sweeping views across Bendigo. The Bendigo Mountain Bike Club headquarters are at Muldoon Reserve, Spring Gully. This Club also seems to be a breeding ground for high achievers. Matthew’s fellow Club member and coach, Issac Fletcher was selected for the 2021 UCI MTB World Championships due to be held in Italy. Issac’s sister, Alana races in the under 15s, she came in second at the nationals and won the Victorian Championships. So, the next time you grab a coffee and croissant from the Spring Gully General Store, go for a quiet stroll along the trails by the creek, look over the soccer pitches and hills, and reflect on these kids all around you busily reaching world domination doing what they love. But still enjoy that croissant!

Ideally located a short drive, or leisurely walk, from the heart of Bendigo, Spring Gully was once an area that predominantly supported gold mining activities. The surrounding forest served as a catchment for the Spring Gully Reservoir, established in 1877 for the purpose of storing water for both residents and goldmines in the area. By 1930, water from Spring Gully was being used for irrigation all the way to White Hills and Huntly.

Sporting reserves and, over the last 15 years, the extension of the Bendigo Creek Trail have offered a hub for outdoor enthusiasts. The local mountain cycling club train kids on a small run and the older fans meet at the edge of the forest. Todd Brown MM CEO

We decided it was time to sit down with McKean McGregor’s CEO, Todd Brown. A keen cricketer and family man, Todd gives us a brief overview of what it’s like being a part of the MM team, how he got to where he is and how he balances business and having a young family. Firstly, tell us about growing up in the Northern Mallee I’m one of six boys raised on our family farm at a little place called Underbool. I’m very proud to have had the upbringing that my parents and the amazing community provided, we were very fortunate to grow up in the Mallee. Six sports mad brothers ensured that we are all fairly competitive in everything that we did too! Getting into your career, how did you start out? I started out as a trainee stock agent in Ouyen back in 2000, then worked in various roles for Elders including Agri banking and management positions over the next 17 years. I was fortunate to be promoted to State Manager for Victoria & Riverina NSW which was a wonderful role and exposed me to a lot of different areas of business. What was it that made you choose to join McKean McGregor back in 2017? I was really impressed with the people behind the business and felt that I aligned really well with Glenn Rea, Alex Collins and the team. With a young family I was travelling a lot and the opportunity to be part of a local, well established, values based family business with a strong desire to take the client experience to another level was very appealing.

26

| SPRING 2021

What does your role consist of? My role is all about people and business, both areas that I enjoy for all of the opportunities and the challenges. I find it wonderfully rewarding when you can help create a really positive, supportive environment and then extend people to perform to a high standard. If we support our team personally and professionally, this then flows through to our client experiences and results. What do you feel is the biggest strength of MM right now?

How important is having a connected team when it comes to achieving high results? It is essential for sustained team success in anything in life. An individual can perform well and drag others

improve too which we will continue to work hard on.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your job? Smiling faces. Both within our team and also our clients and the community. It’s extremely fulfilling to see the energy and passion our staff show and knowing the difference it can make for our loyal clients, whether that be a 3rd or 4th generation client or a new one that we have only recently helped. How do you find a work-life balance with such a demanding job? I think of it more as a life balance given work is such a massive part of all of our lives. I’m grateful to have a career that I love which helps a lot. Going for a run in the evening is really good for my physical and mental health. It’s when I try to process everything and then after the run I can focus more on family and spend time with my wife Aimie and our 3 kids; Mitch, Imogen and Brady. Where do you see MM in the future? We want to keep building relationships. We have a vision to be the trusted partner of choice for every real estate or livestock client’s needs within our local area, so I’ll be doing my best to help guide us. What is your favourite Bendigo suburb? Spring Gully. I love the natural bushland setting and its still only 5 minutes from the centre of town.
