238 View Street, Bendigo

This grand Victorian solid brick building has a fascinating story of origin – designed by William Beebe in 1895, this was originally the home of James Allan, the Sheriff of Marong, in Kangaroo Flat. His widow – who had lived as a child in the 1850s on the site of the Alexandra Fountain – loved the house so much she moved it to its central View Street location in 1915, where she lived until her death at the age of 98. Sitting on a corner allotment, this elegant and beautifully presented property, provides style, space and an abundance of charm with original detail throughout. Hidden behind an established hedge, the elaborate

façade includes wrought iron fretwork and fluted veranda posts. The separate ‘coach house’ is ideal for self-contained living, a work space or commercial rental opportunities. With the city centre a short stroll away, and all the hard work taken care of, this stunning home is move-in ready and ideal for a buyer seeking a unique piece of history with a variety of living options. The front entrance opens into a formal entry hall with 4m high ceilings; decorative cornice and corbels; and wide Pine floorboards. A spacious formal lounge is positioned to one side, and opposite is a formal dining room with bay window, both with ornate pressed metal ceilings and cast-iron fireplaces with marble surrounds. A library, conservatory, fully-renovated luxury kitchen with butler’s pantry, living room and sun room are positioned towards the rear of the home. Two large bedrooms are located at the front of the house – one with built-in wardrobe and window seat. A third bedroom, with built-in loft bed, serves as a study, and the master is located on

the second floor. This luxurious suite includes a walk-in robe, refurbished ensuite and a balcony overlooking the QEO and poppet head in Rosalind Park. Outdoors, a paved courtyard and decks at the rear lead around to the conservatory – perfect for entertaining – and to one side of the house is a lawn area and large pond set amongst an established, landscaped garden. as a gold washing site and commissioners camp. The Marong Family Hotel has stood on its current site since 1865 and is at the heart of the town and the community. I caught up with owner Robyn Lougoon, who in partnership with her husband, Ross and with the support of the Marong community, have been breathing life back into the old pub since 2007.

10

The Lougoon’s were already producing wine: they have been developing Connor Park Winery since 1985. It’s a wonderful family story – Ross’ uncle, Tom Connor was known for his development of Australian farming machinery through his company Connor Shea Machinery. Tom had invented the world’s first pick up baler and post hole digger and had visions of perfecting

end to that plan and the vines were left to run wild. Ross and Robyn bought the property to farm, they knew little about grapevines or wine production but they set about resurrecting the vineyard, fortunately understanding the value of the old deep rooted shiraz vines and the quality of the fruit they yield. Initially this fruit was keenly sought after by established wineries, then in the ‘90s after expanding plantings to other varietals

Each group is given the opportunity to sell raffle tickets at Joker Poker held on Friday nights, “the groups rotate each month and they all do pretty well out of it,” Robyn said. All the while the busy duo were sheep farming on the property. Part of the diversification vision after purchasing the Hotel was to provide a true ‘paddock-to-plate’ experience, so Ross embarked on a tailored breeding program to ensure what is put on the plate is the best it can be. A tailored menu followed, featuring the best home-grown lamb in numerous dishes, combined with an excellent Connor Park Winery wine list. This was born from the determination farmers show when faced with a severe drought, as Robyn said, “we were copping it from all directions, wine production was down, no water for sheep...”. It seems the new owners of the Marong Family Hotel were pivoting before ‘pivoting’ had a name. Today, the Marong Family Hotel is a busy, lively family focussed hotel. Robyn says, “It has always been our priority to make it kid friendly. That’s why we don’t have pokies or keno. Sometimes there are more kids running

younger couples and young families. “This is very much a young family area,” Robyn said, “The primary school is having major renovations, it’s growing exponentially. The town is ready for development, there has been so much population growth, there is so much opportunity for local business to develop.” GrainCorp is a sizeable employer in town and Hazeldene’s chicken farm is a major employer for the whole area and is just down the road. The area sees wine tourism, there are many cellar doors including Balgownie Estate and Sandhurst Ridge that has accommodation options. Robyn said, “The Marong Caravan Park is booked out over many weekends, mainly with young families that we then see in the hotel.” It sure sounds like a good afternoon out to me, I’ll be sitting in the winter sunshine with the hickory smoked lamb rump with Connor Park red wine jus and a lovely glass of Sangiovese. I may just pop into some cellar doors on the way home.

Gold discoveries did occur from the early 1850s, with the most famous being at Wilson’s Reef in 1867 – about 4km east of the centre of town – however, the area’s primary industry was farming, specifically growing cereal, and gold washing at Bullock’s Creek. Significant kaolin clay beds were uncovered at Wilson’s Hill and this was mined and sent to Melbourne for pottery manufacturing for many years. By the early 1900s, Marong had established a primary
