Letter to the editor Dear Seniors who partied up in Joe Rich: Hi guys. A few weeks ago, I was sitting at the edge of my property overlooking Mission Creek, when a convoy of cars filled with students, some who I recognized, started to buzz up Three Forks Road on its way to the Grad campout. As far as I know, no one was injured during this time-honoured event--great news. I do a lot of mountain biking in the area, and that weekend I headed up into the Greystoke’s area to take in the beauty of the backcountry. Instead, what I saw/found only saddened me. Just past the confluence of Mission and one other spawning creek, at the intersection of Three Forks and Foolhen forestry service road, I came across the aftermath of your party: blankets, large ‘Cola’ bottles, and other garbage littered the landscape. The bridges were covered in graffitti (some tags which I recognized) and the place lay in general disarray. I had visited the place on the afternoon two days previously, at which time the area was clean, as hunters and other recreationists do a pretty good job at keeping the place picked up. Every graduating class wants to leave its legacy, its mark. I have a hard time believing that this is the mark that you would want to leave on our backdoor step. And so, I would like to put out a request, a challenge, to the people who organized and took part in the party. Why not revisit the place, have a bonfire (if permitted), relive the experience, and then, clean up the mess you left? It wouldn’t take too much effort, and it would get the area ready for the next generation of seniors wanting to party there. P.S.: All of the bottles you left could have been recycled. I estimated about $40 worth lying around. Too bad I was on my bike, at the time.... Maybe put the funds towards grad? Just a thought. Cheers, Jon Derksen

Halloween Help by BrienneWelton The age old question every year for millions of people is what should I be for Halloween? There are many well-known traditional costumes or one could choose from a previous fad. Of course there will always be people looking for a unique costume that no one has ever seen before. Here are some ideas to help you answer this Halloween’s big question. Paul Godwin, manager at Party City, America’s largest Halloween retailer, declared that “This year we’re seeing a lot of zombies.” This upcoming trend is most likely attributable to the popular television series The Walking Dead. Zombie costumes differ widely from each other because many of the details are left to the avid imagination of the particular wearer. Trends are often a reflection of fad movies or TV series. This year offered lots of inspiration with the Avengers, Spiderman, The Hangover part 2, Batman and The Hunger Games. Popular television shows offer distinctive and recognisable characters such as Howard from Big Bang Theory or various characters from Glee or Jersey shore. These costumes work because they are trademarked and recognisable to the casual observer. A ‘Howard’ sporting tight colored jeans and a dorky knitted sweater or a Snooki with her big hair pouf would be recognisable. A traditional costume is another possibility. Cat and ghost costumes are quick and easy to put together at the last minute. Witches are

timeless and still very popular. However, don’t feel obligated to stick to tradition. Put a personal twist on your costume. Instead of being a plain cat, go as the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland. For a good laugh dress as the Charlie Brown ghost. Be unique and edgy this Halloween, but not too edgy. Current local weather is predicted to be overcast and moderately cold on the 31st so it would be advisable to cover up in the appropriate places and keep warm. Most importantly however, have fun!

Halloween Health by Danielle Beleutz Halloween is coming up and when you think Halloween, you think candy. Going out with your friends and getting as much candy as you can fit into your bag sounds like the perfect night ever. However, for some children it is a night that requires a lot of attention to the ingredients contained in the candies they’ve acquired. There are many allergies that limit a child’s candy selection, though one of the most common is Celiac disease, or gluten intolerance. Celiac is a genetic disorder where the small intestine gets damaged by gluten. More than 330,000 Canadians have been diagnosed with Celiac disease and out of those 73,000 are children. We recently held an interview with KSS student, Emerson Rogers. This is what she had to say on the matter: Censor This!: How have you dealt with the candy you received, knowing you wouldn’t be able to eat half of it? Emerson: “Well I’ve thought of people I could give it to, such as my sister, and then I go through the rest and sorted out the stuff I can’t eat from the stuff I can. Censor This!: Does it make you upset --not being able to eat or taste most of the candy? Emerson: I guess in a way it does. I mean, the candy companies make the wrappers very appealing and people are always saying how some candies are so good. After almost seven Halloweens of ending up with the same treats, I’m a little bored of the stuff I can eat.

Celiac student, Emerson Rogers, is looking forward to a gluten-free Halloween Celiac student, Emerson Rogers, is looking

Censor This!: Any tips you’d like to share on how to have just as much fun as someone without Celiac on Halloween? Emerson: Get together with friends and make a deal. Tell them that they can have anything you can’t eat from your bag if they trade it with something you can eat from theirs. Also Halloween isn’t all about candy; focus more on going out with friends and seeing other peoples’ costumes. There are some ways people can help prevent children having to waste their night sorting through their candy while their friends have a laugh eating it. They could have a separate bowl at their house containing only candy that is gluten free. Gluten-free candies include Oh Henry!, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey’s, Snickers, Skittles and quite a few more. Photo: fitsugar.com

Halloween Possibly a Cause for Violence

by Danielle Beleutz

Below: Tony Moran plays phsycotic murderer in Halloween (1978) Left: Young boys dress up as violent characters such as Freddy Krueger

The scariest holiday of the year is on its way, and people in several countries around the world are preparing for it. Kids and adults alike are stocking up on candy, decorating their houses and of course picking out the best costumes. The costumes chosen will more likely than not include a fake weapon of some sort. In the top ten costumes for the year 2012, seven of them include a weapon or violent influences, such as a zombie or Bane, the villain that counters Batman in the most recent movie. It has been a long standing discussion on whether or not Halloween causes violence, and nobody can come to an agreement even today. Students within KSS don’t have a mutual opinion on violence; some say it causes it while some disagree. Jessie Peitsch states her opinion saying, “I think maybe because kids dress up as monsters or killers and they get carried away while playing the part. They might not re-

CENSOR THIS

alize how violent they have gotten because they are just playing the role of a bad person.” Another student, however, disagrees wholeheartedly. Amelia Wilde explains, “Halloween is just a holiday that is fun for everyone. People enjoy dressing up and the violence that may occur is purely kids acting as foolish as they would any other day.” There is no correct response on this subject; it is different for every individual. Undoubtedly, there have been criminal activities taking place on Halloween night, such as the shooting in Georgetown, Washington in 2011, but it is only on rare occasions that something as violent as that happens. People can protect themselves and others by making sure no one gets too carried away in the festivities this Halloween.

KSS News Christy Clark, Democrat or Dictator? by Kolby Zinger-Harris Since Christy Clark, former radio talk-show host, was sworn in as Premier of British Columbia on May 30th of 2011, her popularity has suffered a noticeable decline. There is no doubt that the people of BC are raising some eyebrows at the shuffling around in the new Cabinet and at the Premier’s decision to cancel the legislature’s fall sitting. Doubts in Ms. Clark begin when she managed to sneakily jump up the provincial ladder without a real election. Her premiership being a product of former Premier Gordon Campbell’s resignation in 2011, there are many British Columbians who are disappointed to have an unelected politician running the province for two years. The fact that Christy Clark did not receive the people’s seal of approval before she became Premier could be even considered undemocratic. Some are wondering if this controversy surrounding Ms. Clark is the reason several high-profile members of the BC Liberal Party have announced that they will not be seeking re-election in May of 2013. Among them are 13 sitting Liberal MLA’s, cabinet ministers Kevin Falcon, George BC’s premier Chritsy Clark Abbott, Mary McNeil and Clark’s parliamentary secretary John Les. Abbot compared his service in the Cabinet to the popular song “Hotel California,” ties. Jocks Shine at Annual Run for the Cure by Harsha Bhamra The 2012 CIBC run for the cure benefiting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation was held beside City Park on Sunday September 30, 2012. Fundraiser organizer Maliki Suppin and members of the KSS junior football team ran 5 km on Sunday for the Cancer Foundation .Their goal was to raise $1500 for this good cause but they raised $2000 instead and won the school team challenge! The students involved in this fundraiser did so because some of their family members have fought cancer themselves. When asked why he chose to get involved, Gage Sayles replied, "It was a cool opportunity to help out other people with breast cancer." Mrs. Patti Buna, career coordinator at KSS, was volunteering at the event when she saw the boys from our football team receive the school team challenge award. "I was very impressed that group of grade 10 boys from the KSS football team collected that much money for a worthy cause," beemed Mrs. Buna.

Eating Disorders A Terrible Challenge by Leah Weiss Anorexia, Bulimia, eating disorders -whatever you want to call them. For most ordinary people eating disorders are a touchy subject, even people who work with these disorders and are surrounded by them daily don’t see any clarity of the subject no matter how many days pass. When I asked a nurse who works with patients diagnosed with eating disorders she told me her opinion on them. “To start off with, eating disorders are very complex, but what most people can not grasp about the concept of the illness is that eating disorders are almost never about the food. Most often it has to do with a lot of underlying problems that the person is going through such as their home life, school friends or lack of, and their self-esteem. And many other factors that play a role in the development of an eating disorder. Although there is no direct or particular cause of an eating disorder, I personally believe that there could be a possible chemical inbalance aspect in the brain chemistry and a means of exercising some control into one's life.” When someone has suffered from an eating disorder for a long period of time, the evidence of withdrawal from various daily activities is apparent. Nor-

mal encounters with friends and family and even a full day of school becomes a struggle due to the lack of nutrition that the brain needs to do these simple tasks. Since eating disorders became a more and more common occurring problem in society, the same question has been asked over and over again," Why can't the person just eat?" However the question isn’t why but what makes it so irrevocably hard to eat without exercising to the point of harm or urge to binge and purge?

From a personal point of view, I believe eating disorders are similar and comparable to disorders such as ADHD or even ADD. The person affected by the disorder is unaware of the severity of their situation, is in denial of the diagnosis of an eating disorder and has a distorted body perception, low self-esteem and unrealistic rate of how quickly or slowly weight can be gained or lost.

Stardom, A click away?

by Sarah Thorburn There are talented people throughout the world that present incredible and indescribable vocals. Back a few decades ago people became famous recording on records. It cost a fortune to produce records. You end up having to pay for the studio time and band members. A lot of the cost was from reproducing and duplicating records. If you were a huge hit, you have sold only 100,000 records. In the late 1980’s music videos and DVDs became popular. You were nobody if you didn’t have a DVD or music video because nobody could hear you. Michael Jackson and his song Thriller was the first real break away video and one to sell one million DVDs. The cost of producing records in music video’s made it so that only people with money or influence could have the opportunity of becoming famous. The high cost of producing records and DVDs made it so many of the talented individuals or duos couldn’t have the chance of becoming a worldwide star. In today’s society with internet and TV talented everyday people can become famous. YouTube has spawned a new form of celebrity status. There are millions of talented singers that couldn’t ever get the chance of becoming famous. The cost of recording a song is out of reach for the normal singer. Now all you need is your computer and soft ware for mixing their voices and music together. Using a typical web cam or camera for example, Christina Grimmie has posted around 141 videos. With a total of 328,872,914 video views and 1,748,702 subscribers she has become a YouTube sensation. She started by just putting videos on the internet with her video camera and no special effect just Christina and her key board. There are many well known stars on YouTube including Megan and Liz, Boyce Avenue, Alex Goot, Cimorelli, Tyler ward and many others. Lots of producers that search for new young rising stars look on YouTube, that’s where Justin Bieber got discovered by Scooter Braun and now he is one of the most popular stars out in the entertainment business. Posting a YouTube video can be a life changing experience!

Tim Burton An Otherworldy Phantom Stranded on Earth

by Zoe Shay Who is known for their stop-animation films, beautifully twisted mind and melancholy storylines? Tim Burton, of course! It's unanimously agreed that Mr. Burton is a legend and a movie demi-god among men. With big hit movies like Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas and Sweeney Todd it's plain to see that Tim is unlike any other. Born in Burbank, California in 1958 to Jean and Bill Burton, Tim Burton began being influenced by iconic people such as Dr.Suess, Roald Dahl and Edgar Allen Poe. At the young age of eleven he began to create short stop-motion animations on an 8mm film with no sound. When Tim turned 13 he filmed a crude stop-animation film by the name of The Island of Doctor Agor which is one of his oldest known juvenile films. After graduating from CalArts in 1979 Disney approached Burton and offered him a job as an animators apprenticeship where Burton worked as an animator, storyboard artist and concept artist for The Fox and the Hound, Tron and The Black Cauldron. Burtons style clashed with Disney's ideas, so he began to work on projects like Frankenweenie in 1984. In 1989 Tim Burton married Lena Gieseke then divorced in 1993, soon after he began to date Lisa Marie until 2001. From 2001 onward Tim Burton has been in a relationship with British actress Helena Bonham Carter with whom he has two children: Nell Burton and Billy Burton. Actor Johnny Depp is godfather to both children and best friend to Burton, who is known for frequently featuring Helena and Johnny in his movies. Depp admits that Helena and he constantly try to "out-weird each other." Being a well-known writer, producer and director has its perks! Tim Burton has been a part of many successful movies including Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. His recent projects are a revamped version of Frankenweenie and a rumored sequel to cult classic Beetlejuice. Whatever he chooses to take on next, it's bound to be the quirky and dark Burton work that we all know and love. Of course with Tim Burton we expect nothing less than the best, and he has yet to let us down.

X Factor Review

by Danielle Beleutz As most people know, The X Factor U.S had its season premiere on Wednesday, September 12. The two hour show was the beginning of the second season, and in my opinion, it seems to be the show to watch. Every Wednesday and Thursday, at 5pm and again at 8pm, watch the judges Simon Cowell, L.A Reid, Britney Spears and Demi Lovato mentor contestants and make dreams come true. The auditions were held in five different cities around the USA: Kansas City, Missouri; Austin, Texas; San Francisco, California; Greensboro, North Carolina.; and Providence, Rhode Island. Any US resident over the age of 12 could come and audition but only around 170 acts made it through to the next round. Boot camp is the next stage, where the 170 acts had to go through two days of challenges, whether it be dancing or performing in groups. The acts are then separated into four categories: 12-16 year olds, 17-24 year olds, 25 and over, and the groups. Six acts from each category move on to the next stage: Judges Houses. The 24 acts fly to different locations around the world and perform for their mentor one last time before the final 16 are chosen for the live stages. For the next few weeks, the acts perform to a live audience and are slowly cut down until there is one act left; the winner of that season. The contestants all stay in a huge house and cook meals together, forming friendships that will last a long time. The judges create bonds between them and the contestants they are mentoring. Each week there are themes that the song choices need to represent, and it is always fun to see the twist the singer puts on the song. The whole season is exciting; it is definitely worth missing an hour out of your night to watch!

Censor This Reviews 2 Great Reads Right Side: The cover of the novel Divergent Far left Side: Cover of the novel The Virgin Suicides

Above: the movie poster for the film Divergent Right: the movie poster for the film The Virgin Suicides

by Lauren Boyd Suicide is one of today's most discussed issues with approximately one million tormented people committing suicide every year throughout the world, and nearly 20 times that number in attempts it’s starting to reach “epidemic” proportion. But does suicide make an appropriate topic for a young adult book? The novel The Virgin Suicides, written by Jeffery Eugenides, is the story of the five teenaged Lisbon girls struggle through their short distressing lives. The narrator of this book is an unnamed teenaged boy who watches from afar as the lives of his neighbors, Cecilia, lux, Bonnie, Theresa and Mary, change andfall apart. The boy watches one day as an ambulance comes to the house and takes Cecelia away; he later comes to know that she tried to kill herself by cutting her wrists but failed and was discovered in time. The house itself looks depressed and unloved as the grass goes without water or cutting and a strange smell is noticed coming from the house when people walked by. Mr. Lisbon who was a teacher at a private school stops going to work staying at home with the rest of his shrinking family. Soon scarcely anyone came or left the house. The book won the 1991 Aga Khan Prize for fiction and in 1999 was turned into a film. The Virgin Suicides is a very recommendable book to anyone who can take a sprinkle of sadness in their day and an appropriate young adult novel to broaden their view of the human condition.

by Renee Berger Divergent is a sensational new book by the author Veronica Roth. It was released May 3, 2011 and just recently became very popular among teens. It is the first book in the trilogy and catches the reader's attention from page one. The story is set in a futuristic dystopian society and follows the struggles of a young girl named Beatrice Prior. In this society, the city is divided up into five different factions and each one displays a different value. The five factions are Abnegation for selflessness, Candor for honesty, Amity for peace, Erudite for intelligence and Dauntless for bravery. This system of living was created after a huge war; the government believed that the reason the war began was because of these 5 different personalities clashing, so they split everyone up to prevent further conflict. Beatrice was born and raised in Abnegation but she has always felt that she doesn't belong there, that she isn't selfless enough to stay. Finally the time has come for her to choose the faction that she will spend the rest of her life in. She struggles with the decision of staying in Abnegation with her family or switching to Dauntless, which follows morals that are opposite of how she was raised. Eventually choosing day arrives and Beatrice makes the risky choice to switch factions and join Dauntless. At first she struggles to fit in with the Dauntless and do well in initiation, but as time progresses she grows as a character and becomes the top ranked in initiation. After the long weeks of the initiation process Beatrice makes it into Dauntless and can finally begin her new life.

Fashion Catch the Latest Teen

Thrift?

by Brienne Welton Recently people have noticed a change in teen fashion. This past year styles are more ‘vintage’ than ‘brand-new’, rips in clothes are acceptable in society and old styles from ‘mom’s age’ are coming back with pizzazz. Knitted sweater vests are worn by boys and girls. Loose bohemian shirts bring back memories of flower power. Dresses from the 1940-50s era have returned to modern society. If you ask these vintage wearing teens where they bought their clothes, their response is unanimous. A few years ago if you bought your clothes second hand people had a negative view on wearing strangers’ clothes. Generally people who bought from thrift stores didn’t tell a soul. "When I was in college in the eighties, I didn't know of any thrift stores. They just weren't popular," ex-student Diana recalls. However, in 2011opinions have shifted which has started a secondhand revolution.

Young teen Gabrielle openly shops at secondhand stores. “It gives me a feeling of uniqueness, knowing no one will have quite the same style as me.” Unique is definitely the word for the styles at KSS, ranging from jean-jackets, corduroy pants, overalls, mom jeans and more. “I prefer to shop in thrift stores instead of buying new.” declared Brittany, a grade 10 student. "They have such cool stuff!" Lauren Boyd, grade 11 student states that "Around 90% of my entire wardrobe is second hand. I love thrift stores." Thrift/consignment stores are obviously popular. Cheaper, eco friendly and convenient it’s no wonder people are saying “out with the new, in with the old”. Check out a thrift store today because the best part is, you never know what you’ll find.

“Without a doubt, being well-dressed adds to your appearance, giving you the classy edge everyone loves.”

by Kolby Zinger-Harris

Teenage boys nowadays seem to have taken on an unfortunate reputation of poor fashion sense. This is somewhat bizarre, as when looking a few decades back to the 1970’s or ‘60’s, men of all ages still put an importance on style. Many would agree that guys seem to have stopped putting this importance on clothing recently. This year, though, I have noticed a bit of a change for the better in male teenage fashion. What some would call the “skater” look seems to be becoming more popular among teens entering high school. I have seen a significant difference in the way most guys just starting Grade 10 dress compared to those a year or two older than them. What, then, has brought on this change? The rising popularity of the blogging website Tumblr could be a plausible cause for this sudden fashion awareness. Tumblr is essen-

If a person finds a blog he likes, he can follow it and see everything that is posted on that particular blog. It’s no surprise, then, that Tumblr is not only a significant media outlet for clothing companies, but also a place for people to share photos of clothes and styles that they are interested in. The website is becoming extremely popular among teenagers and it’s likely that it is now a prime source for setting new trends for that generation. Is it time that teenage boys regain their style? Without a doubt, being well-dressed adds to your appearance, giving you the classy edge everyone loves. Toronto Fashion Incubator

by Julia Roigk Have you ever heard of the Fashion Incubator? The Fashion Incubator, a project from Toronto formed in 1987, is dedicated to help fashion designers in Toronto set up their own business. Huge cities like London, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Auckland and Dunedin have adopted this concept to form their own Fashion Incubators. Basically, the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) provides tips, tricks and a place to start for creative entrepreneurs. The TFI doesn’t only help Fashion Designers to get started, but also offers jewellery and accessories designers, small business owners and fashion students a way to get in contact with others, work together and get important business contacts. The idea of a TFI began in 1986, when the Fashion Industry Liaison Committee (FILC), a volunteer industry organization supported by the City of Toronto's Economic Development Division, proposed the Fashion Incubator as a way to make the industry grow, stabilize it and provide jobs in the future. It got a two-year grant from the government and later on several other grants, especially from the TEDCO (The City of Toronto Economic Development Corporation) until its demise in 2010. Since then, the project is founded by a municipal grant from the City of Toronto, corporate sponsorships, fundraising, seminar and event fees, consulting, and membership and space rental fees. The TFI has two different states of membership, being an Outreach Member or a Resident Member. An Outreach Member has their own shop outside of the TFI facility, and also gets one-on-one consultation and access to the resource centre, while a Resident Member has a studio within the TFI building.

Currently, there are more than 140 Outreach Member, their crafts ranging from jewellery and handbag design over contemporary clothing to evening wear and while most of them can be found in Ontario, you can also visit one in here in British Columbia. The Seoleone Luxury Basics Inc. is located in Downtown Vancouver and offers a combination between comfort and style in underwear and other basics. Three more shops are in Calgary, and one shop can be even found in Montevideo, Urugay! Another advantage of the Outreach Membership is that students can get experiences in the “real world” with a safety net of experts ready to help them out. At the moment 15 students are enrolled in this program. The Resident Membership, while more expensive, also brings more benefits with it. Located in a prime spot with a lot of transit connection possibilities, the TFI offers not only meeting rooms and access to a member’s lounge, but also networking with other Residents, Outreach members and creative individuals, exclusive promotional and marketing opportunities and invitations to industry parties and events. Starting at $275/month with access to full production facilities on 2.5 days a week, it is affordable for most young entrepreneurs, and also less expensive that starting a shop on your own. At this time, there are 6 Resident Members, whose profiles can be found online on http:// www.fashionincubator.com/. The TFI has helped a lot of people set up their shop in the past, including VAWK by Sunny Fong, which has been featured on Project Runaway Canada. So, if you need help setting up your business, consider contacting the TFI!

To make our own felt hat you will need wool roving, narrow strips of wool fibers, an inflatable ball roughly the size of your head, a spray bottle filled with soapy water, a bowl and three pairs of pantyhose. To begin with sit the ball in the bowl to keep it stable, with the air hole facing down, and get all the materials ready to use. Now you're set up begin by drizzling the ball with plane dish soap. Now place the wool roving, in strips, over the inflated balls center in the opposite direction until the ball is no longer visible. After the ball is fully covered with the wool roving you can now add a pattern, design or different colours of the wool roving. Make sure the wool is at least one inch thick. Continue by spraying down the wool with soapy water until it is evenly moist but not dripping wet. This will keep the wool in place. Have a friend help you place the pantyhose over the top of the ball near the soon to be hats opening and on its side. After the ball is fully covered by the pantyhose roll the ball in water as hot as you can stand it for about three minutes. Now soak in very cold water. Repeat these two steps three to four times ending in the hot water. Place the bubble wrap on a table now with the bubble side facing upward if you had not already done so. Now to make sure the wool fibers are locked together roll and bounce the ball on the bubble wrap for three minutes. You can then remove the pantyhose and deflate the ball. Now you have a wool bag essentially to make it look more hat-like you must gently stretch and pull to make it fit your head. Dunk the hat in hot water followed by cold water several times to shock the fibers into place. Without stretching your hat squeeze out the water; it's finally time to shape the bag. Put the hat on your head and, looking in a mirror, make sure your hat has the style you like by using gentle pressure to mold and shape it. Now would be the time to add a brim or other small shapes to make the hat more unique. The final step is to leave your hat somewhere it won't get moved or disturbed and wait 24 hours to insure that it is fully dry and ready to wear. After the hat is dry you can add decorations such as buttons and beads or even a needle felted flower fabric flower.

Autumn and Winter Trends Fall Fashion- Dressing Your Dog by Mary Bunka

You’ve seen them in stores: those tiny sweaters that fit-just-tight-enough, little Halloween costumes that will make the whole room melt with the overall cuteness of it all, and teeny boots and shoes to keep little feet warm. And of course, you feel automatically compelled to buy these items. It would be cruel not to. In fact, it should be illegal to run around without them. I mean, you’re buying them for someone that follows you everywhere, and you should show some sort of appreciation for them, right? Wrong. Of course, I’m talking about dressing up your dog.

extra cover for the winter. In this case, most Humane Societies agree that a sweater, and possibly even doggie boots, is the way to go. Assuming, that is, that your pet doesn’t mind. Pet Place.com, an online pet care site supported by vets, states that “If your dog needs to wear some type of protective or warmthproviding clothing, be sure to introduce him to it in a calm and reassuring manner... Do not force any dog to wear clothing, especially a nervous or timid dog.”

When the weather starts to get colder, and Halloween draws near, stores start to stock tiny costumes “perfect for your pet.” These are usually one-size-fits-all, or close to it, and Photo from Google. The baggy, knitted sweaters should be approached with caution. Humans are in style this fall. they can be worn with almost aren’t all one size, neither are dogs. To make anything. up for this, many costumes are made with elastic or stretchy components to truly “fit” Fido. However, anything with elastic in it should be avoided, Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) spokesperson Shawna Randolph warns. If it’s too tight on your pet, it could constrict breathing and movement. The BCSPCA asserts that "[Dressing your dog] can put it at risk. It… inhibits their ability to be a 'dog' and communicate in dog language to other dogs… If two dogs meet and one is in an outfit, the dressed dog can't communicate properly. The result could be a dog fight!"

Clothing your pet has been the basis of much debate over the past couple of years, but most experts seem to agree that it is up to the individual dog. And trust me, if your dog is as vocal as mine, he’ll let you know if you’ve crossed a line.

Movement is especially important for dogs, Photo from Google. Combat booots that were as they are constantly running around to worn by men during the war have now turned into women combat boots. The new style for fall! check out the world around them. They need

to be able to lie down comfortably, while also being able to run around in the backyard without tripping over fairy wings or getting their antennae stuck in a bush. For this reason, it is recommended that those who insist on dressing up their pets buy costumes and sweaters from either a shelter or a pet specialty store, not from the supermarket. Make sure the costume is fastened with Velcro and doesn’t cover your pet’s face. No masks! Avoid capes and wings, as these will just impede your dog’s movement and make it uncomfortable.

World at War : Women Well Dressed by Brienne Welton In this modern age, high fashion is wild, strange and delightfully unconventional. Celebrities awe audiences with meat dresses, outfits made entirely from stuffed animals and light up, firework brassieres. In the 1940s WW2 era however, clothes weren’t quite so colorful. Glamorous was out and monotone was in, taking the shape of slacks, utility clothes, rayon, and subdued colors. Clothing rations restricted the entire fashion industry, simplifying style. Wool was scarce in 1942 so artificial fibers such as viscose and rayon were used. Clothes were fabricated with the least amount of material possible and old clothes reused to make new ones. Pleats, excess buttons and decorative trimmings were made unlawful by the British Government. Only conventional fastenings and other necessary attributes were allowed, making fashion a practicality rather than the art form it is today. Clothes in the 40s were designed for working women helping in the war. Originally, needing functional comfortable clothes

to work in is what caused women to shed their dresses in favor of men’s pants. The kangaroo cloak was also useful for its deep pockets, designed for stuffing prized belongings into when running to a bomb shelter during an attack. Frequent mending was popular to make the clothes last as long as possible. What’s remarkable about the women in this Photo from Google. Women’s casual dressing worn age is that despite the severe laws and rations during WWII they still strived to be appear feminine and unique. Curls and bright lipstick accentuated the feminine appearance achieved by tight fitting suits. Even women who worked in the factories manicured their eye brows and did their hair! Some even browned their legs with tea bags and painted lines up the backs simulate pantyhose, which were very rare. Women went to great lengths to look good. So next time you’re having outfit problems remember that even in the throes of a World War, women from the 1940s made clothes from scraps, painted tights on their legs and worked in factories, looking fabulous the whole time. Home Remedies for Healthy Hair by Renee Berger If you happen to have a lot of hair you should understand how frustrating it is to keep your hair looking healthy during fall and winter. Yet all those commercials on TV make it seem so easy to maintain healthy hair, but who wants to pay a lot of money on products that don't work 90% of the time? There are much easier solutions to give you the healthy looking, shiny hair that we all desire. All of these methods are affordable and can be done by using simple household items. The easiest method for healthier looking hair is to simply end your showers with cold water instead of hot. Hot water opens your pores, which is great for removing dirt and oil so switching to cold water at the end of a shower closes your pores back up and prevents dirt from accumulating in your scalp. This increases your hair strength which prevents hair from easily falling out when brushing. As well cold water is also known to make hair shinier. To learn about all the other great benefits of cold water showers, visit http://www.thirdage.com/skin/the-four-bigbenefits-of-a-cold-shower./

During fall and winter the cold air dries out hair immensely. Here are some simple solutions to reverse these damaging effects and restore the moisture to your hair. The first one is to cut back on the shampoo. Some shampoos contain harsh cleaning agents which strip your hair of its natural oils and dry it out. A simple fix is to use less shampoo when washing your hair. Another way to prevent drying out your hair is to limit your use of flat-irons, blow dryers and etc. Anything that exposes your hair to heat dries it out immensely. If you can't quit using these products altogether, just using them less often or turning down the heat will make a difference. Some less obvious solutions for dry hair are vinegar, eggs, avocado, mayo, and olive oil. Treating your hair with these common household products will help restore your dry hair and add some shine. You can find steps for treating your hair with these items at health.howstuffworks. com. All of these tips are great for curing dry hair yet they are simple and inexpensive. So say goodbye to dry hair and hello to saving money!

CURRENT SPORTS KSS truly “Best in the West”

by Lauren Boyd and Harsha Bhamra

The balls were flying at the Best of the West volleyball finals in the KSS gym Saturday night. The annual week long Best of The West Volleyball tournament was being held in the KSS gym again this year and hopes were high for the girl’s team to continuing their five year winning streak. Fist up to play was the boys. The boys lost their final match and therefore didn’t win first place in the tournament but they did come in fourth overall. When asked about how the boy’s team did Mr. Sodaro, their coach, seemed appreciative of their efforts and proud of their accomplishments. The boy’s biggest opponent was a team from Edmonton; the coach feels that the team would have done better if they had a quicker start that being their largest obstacle. After it was all over the team and coach were happy with their finishing place. The KSS girls were one of the last teams to play and were highly anticipated. The girl’s team felt they were “unstoppable” and had a boost of confidence being on home turf. The girls had a good start playing 16 sets and taking down KCS in only 3 sets. When questioned the girls team said they all felt like family and they played as a “united” team.

Ski season is on its way! by Danielle Beleutz Skiing and snowboarding season is just on the horizon, or at least it seems like it for some people. It is around this time when people start gearing up for the winter, making sure their equipment is ready for the hills. Ski and board shops all around Kelowna are getting their first customers*, and the ski hills have had their early bird season passes on sale since June 1. One of the reasons people look forward to skiing is that it is a fun activity that helps you stay, or get, in shape. Apart from losing 3,000 calories in just six hours, you can lose up to five pounds in a week and tone your stomach muscles. Not only is it good for your physical health, but your mental health benefits as well. It can relax your mind and it helps relieve depression. enjoying a nice walk, people here in Kelowna are all set to hit the hills. “It’s a nice escape from the stress of school.” Renee Berger muses. For some people, however, it isn’t the downhill activities they are excited for. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing are also really big activities here in Kelowna. They are both a great way to stay in shape and venture on a snow covered trail.”I would like to admire the beautiful scenery in a more calming way than the skiers and snowboards” Brienne Welton says, talking about her excitement to try snowshoeing for the first time this winter.

OCTOBER 24 2012

The girl’s seventh and final game was against the Titans. The Titan’s first serve was out; they were off to a bad start. The first point was KSS on their first serve; they went on to consistently have the upper hand all throughout the game. As the girls confidence increased so did their score finishing 16-7 at the end of the first set. The girls showed amazing support and encouragement throughout the next set finishing again with the higher score 24-20. In the end the KSS girls continued their now 6 year winning streak with the final score of 25-20. Throughout the tournament both teams played some amazing games and had some disappointments. KSS has some enormously talented athletes and I’m sure we are all proud of their talent, wins and effort.

FISHNETS AND ROLLERSKATES? ...must be womens derby!

by Zoe Shay Roller derby was invented in the 1940’s and has faced its ups and downs in popularity. Thankfully, media has rekindled the passion for roller derby and it is now gaining mega popularity not only in North America but throughout Europe as well. Kelowna itself even has its own team – The Okanagan Derby Dolls. What is roller derby? Largely made up of all-female teams, roller derby is a contact sport that is played with two teams of five players. Each team has a “jammer,” the scoring player, and four “blockers.” The jammer scores by skating around the track and lapping members of the opposing team, gaining a point for each opponent passed. The job of a blocker is to assist their jammer to score points with certain moves while also hindering the other teams jammer. Penalties can be given to blockers that violate derby rules. Movies like Whip It, based off the book Derby Girl by Shauna Cross, have inspired young girls everywhere to explore their own derby girl side. Built on ideas like DIY, punk music and third-wave feminism, derby has become not only a sport but a culture as well. Women everywhere are motivated to come up with innovative derby names, get tattoos, dye their hair crazy colors, and create themed outfits for on the track. Individuality, strength, independence, and sportsmanship are core values for derby girls who know that when you join a team, you join a family.

The Okanagan Derby Dolls, who are based out of the Kelowna Sunplex are welcoming new teammates, at any skill level and over the age of nineteen. If you don’t know how to roller skate, the Dolls are ready and willing to teach you the essentials of derby. If you aren’t able to join the team then come out to their first competition on November 20, tickets available at Cherry Hill Coffee and the Sunplex. They will be playing against The Redneck Daisies, and there will be intermission and live entertainment!

LOCKOUT IN NHL: hockey on hold!

by Esme Jackson Around the world, hockey is held on a standstill. The National Hockey League has seen many struggles, but this year’s lockout could possibly devastate them. The lockout began once the National Hockey League Players' Association had decided to change their players’ contracts, in order to switch their overall income from 57% of the league's revenue to 49%. This could lose the players at least $550 million, and in return, give the businessmen and owners of the NHLPA that share of money. Though players have been promised millions of dollars in return for a profitable career, many hockey fanatics still see that this is not right, and are enraged. In order to understand this, you need to understand how much these businessmen are already making. The owners are making amounts that are higher than that of the highest paid hockey player in the business, Shea Weber, defenseman of the Philadelphia flyers ($110 million on a 14 year contract). To give them this extra share of money, is to give them more than enough. It’s hard for players to negotiate percentages when the NHL refuses to give them any more than 50%. It seems that for the time being, hockey is at a standstill, and fans are losing patience. Many fans are sticking with their favorite players and supporting them in their struggle to gain revenue. One fan, Shannon Gilchrist states her opinion: "I think I would be more inclined to give the money to the players. Do I think that's going to happen? No." It's true. The fans need to be heard, as much as the players or anyone else. It's the fan's money that counts in the end, and it seems only fair that they get their say. At this point, nobody knows how long this deadlock will continue, or what the outcome will be. Now the question is, whom do you want your money to go to?

SEASONAL DAY OF THE DEAD IS VERY MUCH ALIVE by Zoe Shay

Dias de los Muertos, mostly celebrated in Mexico, is a holiday dedicated to honouring the deaths of relatives. On November 1, children and infants are honoured and then November 2nd is dedicated to the adults. This two day event has been happening for over three thousand years, dating back to ancient indigenous Pagan cultures in Mexico. Countries such as Spain, Brazil and Ecuador also observe slightly varying festivities of Dias de los Muertos. The dates also correspond with the Catholic All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. How can a day centered around the deceased be so colourful and fun? Activities are mostly composed of creating private altars dedicated to deceased ancestors and family members and visiting and decorating their grave. Popular grave decorations are sugar skulls, chocolate coffins and marigolds which are the official flowers of the holiday. Offerings called ofrendas include the deceased’s favourite food and beverages. Ofrendas consist of foods with strong aromas, so that the spirit of the deceased is able to consume the essence of the meal while the actual meal itself is later given away or eaten by the living. Typical Dias de los Muertos foods are a sweet bread called Pan de Muerto , candied pumpkin by the name of Calabaza En Tacha and spicy foods such as chicken, tamales or enchiladas.

Altar offerings. All 3 pictures from Google. While The Skeleton at the Feast by Elizabeth Carmichael and Chloe Sayer makes it very clear that “the first and second of November belong to the dead”, Dias de los Muertos is also very focused on the living family. Preparations for the holiday such as building the private altar, cooking and baking the food and decorating sugar skulls are all activities that bring the family members together to honour their ancestors. A trip to Mexico to take part in the festivities of Dias de los Muertos will not be a trip wasted.

THE ORIGIN OF HALLOWEEN We are all familiar with the holiday of Halloween. We have grown up trying to have the best costume, trick-or-treating with friends, carving jack-o-lanterns and placing them outside and the thrill of scaring our friends while having the last laugh. Have you ever wondered though, where did Halloween come from? Why do we celebrate this bizarre holiday? Halloween has a very long history; it was first celebrated in Ireland over 2000 years ago by the Celts. Today the holiday on the last day of October is known as Halloween, but 2000 years ago when it was first celebrated it was called Samhain. October 31st was the end of summer for the Celts and Samhain means “summers end” which is a fitting name for the festival. The Celts believed that this day marked the end of summer and the beginning of the dark and cold time that is generally associated with death. The Celts believed this was the day that the spirits would roam the earth and find a new body to possess. During this day the Celts would dance around sacred bonfires and make animal sacrifices dressed in costumes while making loud noises to scare the evil spirits away. People also acted very unusual during this time, sometimes doing things like moving horses into other fields and etc., these could be perceived as the first tricks of Halloween.

16 OCTOBER 24 2012

The Celts also believed that faeries would go door to door dressed as beggars asking for food. Those who gave good food were rewarded and those who gave bad food were punished. This could be seen as the first report of trick-or-treating. Carving pumpkins is thought to originate from the Celtic tradition of using hollowed out turnips, gourds, or rutabagas to hold an ember from the sacred bonfire, so they could light their home fires from the sacred bonfire. But some believe that carving pumpkins originated from the Irish folk tale of Jack, who tricked the devil, but was not allowed in heaven or in hell. The devil, taking pity of Jack, gave him an ember to light his way on his eternal walks on Earth, carried in a hollowed out turnip. Turnips were later substituted for pumpkins because of availability. None the less everything the Celts did on this day was done to either entertain the spirits or an attempt to keep them at bay. In the first century AD the Roman Empire took over most of the Celtic lands. The Romans also had two festivals at the same time of Samhain. One was Feralia, which was a day to honor the dead. The other festival was for Pomona, the goddess of trees and fruit. These two festivals were later combined with Samhain while the Romans ruled over the Celts. Later local people started to convert to Christianity.

by Renee Berger

Pope Gregory IV wanted to substitute Samhain with All Saints Day, aka All Hallows, but people continued to celebrate Samhain so he moved it to November 1st. Since Samhain was celebrated a day before All Saints day it was called All Hallows eve and later was called Halloween. In the late nineteenth century many Europeans from Ireland and England immigrated to America and brought their Halloween traditions with them. The Irish and English Halloween traditions were later combined and lead to modern day trick-or treating. In the 1800s Halloween became a community based holiday and later it was aimed more at youth to reduce vandalism. All of this lead to what we now know today as the holiday of Halloween.

SEASONAL

A VEGAN AUTUMN RECIPE

by Brienne Welton, recipe by Kathy Patalsky This fall I rediscovered pumpkin in a big way. Wanting to capture the essence of fall in my cooking, I put pumpkin in everything I could. This recipe takes pumpkin pie to the next level by combining it with one of America’s all-time favorites: cheesecake. The spicy sweet and the rich creamy flavors of these two delicacies are sure to unite friends around the dinner table this fall. Swirled Cheesecake Pumpkin Pie makes 1 pie with leftover filling 1 pack vanilla vegan pudding 1 1/2 cup soy milk 1/4 cup soy creamer 3 Tbsp cornstarch dash of salt 2 Tbsp Vegenaise (vegan mayo) 1/4 cup evaporated cane juice 1 1/2 containers of soy cream cheese (about 12 oz.) 1/2 cup raw cashews 1/2 cup raw Brazil nuts 1 tsp cinnamon spice blend (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves) 1 dash cayenne (optional) 1 can organic pumpkin puree (16 oz.) 2 Tbsp maple syrup 1 tsp apple cider vinegar One pre-made graham crust

1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Place a small pot on stove top. Turn heat to med-high. Add: soy milk, soy creamer, pudding mix and salt. Stir until pudding mix is well-dissolved in pan.

2. Next, carefully stir in the corn starch. Try not to let it clump. 3. The mixture should then thicken and reduce. Continue stirring briskly. You may want to turn the heat down to medium. Now add in the cream cheese, Vegenaise and sugar. Stir until the cream cheese is melted into the mixture and the filling is bubbling and thick. 4. Remove from heat and pour into a blender. Let cool for a few seconds and proceed blending with extreme caution. *hot liquids tend to steam and can explode in a blender* Add in chopped cashews and chopped Brazil nuts and blend until perfectly smooth. This white mixture is the Vanilla Nut Cream portion of filling. 5. Pour about 8 ounces of the white filling out into a separate container. Set aside. 6. To the blender, add in the maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, pumpkin puree, cinnamon spice blend and cayenne. Blend until smooth. 7. Pour the pumpkin blended mix into your crust. Fill about 3/4 of the way to the top of the crust. (Leave room for the white filling.)

Dear Daisy

Dear Daisy, I have a problem with my height. I am 16 and 5ft 1”. This makes me insecure because girls are not usually attracted to short guys and I think that is why I don’t get any attention even though I am a nice guy. They tend to fall for my friends who are tall and muscular and whenever they break their hearts they come to me for comfort so I know it's just because of my height. What should I do? Short Guy

Dear Short Guy, It is true that girls tend to fall for taller guys, especially at this age when all they are concerned about is appearance. Don’t sweat that issue so much -there is nothing wrong with being short. You might not believe this but some girls actually like short guys because they are sometimes said to be cuter. If you know you are a nice guy then do not let your height bother you so much. In the future, when girls are less caught up in looks (and you too) they will start to look your way because in the end no one likes a good looking tall guy who is going to break their heart. Daisy.

Dear Daisy, I am the type of girl who likes to hang out with boys. I like that because with them there is less drama and gossiping. I am not a tomboy though so that makes people question the reason I do that. People tend to say I am a whore because I like being around boys more. Even my parents find it strange and they are trying to cut off my connections with them. This also made my parents trust me less. The relationship I have with them is totally friendly and I do not intend for it to go further than that and they share the same feeling. I don’t want to stop hanging out with them -what should I do? N.A. Dear N.A., If you don’t want to stop hanging out with them then do not. If you know the relationship you have with them it should not matter what others say about you. People are going to talk whether you are doing bad or good and that is just the way it is. In situations like this you just have to learn not to care. Good luck! Daisy

Dear Daisy, My boyfriend seems to be avoiding me but I don’t know why. I text him every day but he very seldom replies; when he does its some hours after. We used to go to the same school but he has graduated and we don’t see each other as much anymore. Whenever I suggest dates for us to go out he always makes an excuse. I don’t think he loves me anymore, what should I do? Ignored Girlfriend Dear Ignored, Your boyfriend might actually be busy with the changes that have happened in his life. Moving from high school into the working world or to college can be a major change for some people and this factor might be consuming all his time. However, if he really loved you he would make special time for you even if it is a little. The signs that your boyfriend is showing could also mean that he has moved on since high school. Continue to reach out to him but if his attitude persists I would suggest you move on as well. Daisy

Nothing To Do At Lunch? by Mary Bunka

KSS Report:Should Marijuana Be Legalized?

All You Wanted To Know About Marijuana (And Everything You Didn’t) Cannabis is illegal in Canada, except for medical uses. Still it is often tolerated in British Columbia, which might stem from the fact that with its hills and forests BC is ideal for growing the plant and so produces 40% of all Canadian Cannabis. The industry is estimated at $6 billion a year.!

by Renee Berger

The legalization of marijuana is possibly one of the most controversial topics of our generation today. Marijuana has always been illegal in Canada but recently there has been talk that the government is considering its legalization. Many people believe that this is a great idea and continue to support the idea of marijuana becoming legalized, although there are still people who protest and insist that the laws are fine and should remain the same. According to news.nationalpost.com, 66% of Canadians are for the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana while just 20% believe that the laws should stay the same. The majority of Canadians believe that there are more benefits to the legalization of marijuana than there arcomplications. Legalizing marijuana is a big issue today, but let’s consider this fact there is no reported deaths from marijuana overdose ever in history. The side effects of marijuana are mild and don’t pose risks, like violent acts, and it can actually treat symptoms for some health issues. Marijuana also has some medicinal uses. It can relieve pain, help deal with stress, help with anorexia as well as other benefits. But best thing of all, marijuana is not physically addicting. With all that said, I think there are many benefits to marijuana, and it makes more sense for it to be legalized. On the other hand, there are thousands of alcohol and tobacco related deaths every year. Along with deaths, liver problems, lung cancer and other health issues are associated with alcohol and smoking. Alcohol is also known to cause some people to become very violent, and impairs your motor skills. As well tobacco is addicting. People can become hooked instantly, and their health continues to deteriorate every single day they smoke yet they can’t quit. And even though alcohol and tobacco have all these health risks and negative effects, they are both still legal. “Yes and no. Taxation is also a large benefit of legalizing marijuana. It is estimated that Yes because nearly the cannabis business in BC is worth $34 billion, and that is in BC alone. If the everyone does it somegovernment legalizes marijuana and takes over the business they can begin to tax times so the legalization it. The federal government receives about $5 billion in revenue from tobacco, and would obviously allow people to stop being secretive about marijuana will probably be taxed more heavily tobacco, therefore more revenue it. No because overuse is will be gained. As well as taxation, if marijuana is legalized money won’t have to dangerous.“ be wasted busting people who use it. Around 600,000 Canadians use marijuana – Grade 11 student and around 30,000 arrests are made each year. The cost of enforcing cannabis laws is about $1.5 billion annually. So once you legalize marijuana, suddenly we have “We need a $1.5 billion extra dollars. With all this extra money the government can use it to new way of dealing improve the lives of Canadian citizens and improve our economy. with it because right Now you may be wondering, why is marijuana illegal? Using marijuana regularly may cause people to lose their memory, and I think it would stop a lot of violence and it their math and verbal skills may worsen. As well, persistent use of marijuana will would be safer without damage lungs, airways and raise a risk of cancer but when compare to alcohol the risk of marijuana and tobacco, it is not as health damaging. As well, people may bring “I don’t think laced with other up the fact that marijuana is a gateway drug.
