TOP 5 THINGS TO KNOW

Omaha hospitals recognized

Nebraska Medical Center and the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center have both been recognized for medical excellence.

Nebraska Medical Center made Newsweek’s list of the World’s Best Hospitals 2025, the only Nebraska hospital in the top 100 of American hospitals listed.

Also recognized was the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, which made the magazine’s World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2025 roster, the only Nebraska cancer center featured on the worldwide list.

This year’s list includes hospitals from 30 countries around the world. Newsweek and Statista awarded the best hospitals based on weighted scores across four data categories including recommendations from medical experts, results from patient surveys, hospital quality metrics and Statista PROMs Implementation survey.

OneWorld Community Health breaks ground

OneWorld Community Health Centers broke ground March 21 on a new health care facility on its Livestock Exchange campus. The forthcoming $17 million facility will close gaps in services, dignitaries said.

Set to open late next year, the 29,000-square-foot OneWorld Health Care Workforce Development Center will house a health care workforce training center, expanded behavioral health services and child development center among other resources.

The health care workforce training center will provide training for both its internal workforce as well as educate individuals to enter the local health care market. The new addition is also expected to create 20 to 25 full-time positions in and of itself, officials said.

Dignitaries on hand for the event included U.S. Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), State Sens. John Fredrickson of Omaha and Margo Juarez of Omaha, as well as a host of local business, political and nonprofit leaders.

Henry Doorly Zoo a top-rated attraction, again

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo went four-for-four in USA Today’s 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards. The awards rank attractions from across the nation in various categories and sub-categories.

As voted on by USA Today readers, the zoo ranked first for Best Zoo for the third straight year. The attraction also topped the list for Best Safari Park, Best Zoo Exhibit (Desert Dome) and Best Zoo Membership categories.

A panel of experts nominated candidates for the best zoos competition. The final list then went before readers who cast their votes last month.

Another Omaha attraction, Lauritzen Gardens, placed fifth in the Best Botanical Gardens category.

Bacon among top legislators

U.S. Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02) was named one of the top effective legislators for the 118th Congress by the Center for Effective Lawmaking. The report lists the top ten for each party in each chamber, and provides commentary on how they arrived at their conclusions.

Among House Republicans, Bacon was rated second only to U.S. Rep. Sam Graves of Missouri. He scored high in defense, Native Americans, banking and commerce and law, crime and family issue areas.

“Our analysis found that Representative Bacon ranked as one of the most effective Republican House Members in the last Congress,” the report noted. “In addition, he ranked as the most effective Representative in terms of having their sponsored standalone bills substantially incorporated into the laws of other members of Congress. We congratulate the Representative for his hard work and setting an example for promoting the importance of effective lawmaking.”

This rating corresponds to GovTrack, which said Rep. Bacon was the most successful legislator in Congress by passing the most bills and getting them signed into law.

Nebraska Women in Tech announces award winners

The inaugural Nebraska Women in tech Summit, held March 7 at Kiewit La Vista, brought together hundreds of professionals, students and leaders in the industry. It was also the setting for the Nebraska Women in Tech Awards honoring individuals that are driving innovation in their fields and also paving the way for future generations of women in technology.

This year’s honorees are:

• Rising Star of the Year: Hui Ru (Pei Ling) Ng, data scientist, Mutual of Omaha

• Diversity Champion of the Year: Ada-Rhodes Short, assistant professor, School of Interdisciplinary Informatics, University of Nebraska Omaha

• Tech Community Impact Award: Magie Hall, associate professor ISQA, University of Nebraska Omaha/Fellow in Artificial Intelligence

• Tech Innovator of the Year: Tess Dawn McKinney, president/CEO of XRenegades – A Firework Media Company

LETTER FROM THE publisher

Celebrating 50 years with Impact 250

April 4, 2025

Dear Readers,

I am thrilled to announce our landmark IMPACT 250 campaign, which officially launches this Friday, April 4, 2025, and will run through March 27, 2026. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, I am filled with immense pride and excitement to introduce this ambitious initiative that will spotlight 250 exceptional small businesses and startups that form the backbone of our regional economy.

Since my father, Robert G. “Bob” Hoig, founded this publication in 1975, the Midlands Business Journal has remained steadfastly committed to his core belief: small businesses are the heartbeat of communities, driving economic vitality and social wellbeing. For half a century, we’ve published 2,590 weekly issues featuring more than 75,000-plus Nebraska and western Iowa companies, creating a platform where business success is celebrated and shared with the community.

The IMPACT 250 campaign represents more than just a celebration of our golden anniversary. It embodies our unwavering conviction that local businesses generate ripples of economic prosperity that strengthen our entire community. In today’s digital age, where local news coverage continues to diminish, we’re doubling down on our commitment to ensure these vital business stories reach the audience they deserve.

As Willy Theisen, founder of Godfather’s Pizza and our 1981 Entrepreneur of the Year, so aptly noted, MBJ has long served as a voice and champion for local businesses. His early successes documented in our pages helped put Godfather’s Pizza on the map, and today, IMPACT 250 carries forward that tradition of spotlighting local innovators who are building something special right here in the heartland.

From April 4, 2025, through March 27, 2026, we will showcase 250 businesses across various sectors, highlighting their unique contributions to job creation, community development and regional economic growth. Each feature will delve beyond traditional reporting to explore the businesses’ journeys, challenges overcome, and vision for the future.

This campaign also includes special weekly sections, digital content series, community events connecting featured businesses with local leaders, and a commemorative publication collecting all IMPACT 250 stories. Additionally, we’re partnering with local colleges to provide journalism students with real-world business writing experience, helping develop the next generation of business journalists.

Did you know…

Less than 25% of small businesses and startups receive positive organic press from media outlets. This statistic underscores the importance of what we’re doing with IMPACT 250 — creating a dedicated platform to celebrate and amplify the stories of local businesses that might otherwise go untold.

I invite you to be part of this historic initiative. I encourage you to submit a business to celebrate and it could be your own! It’s important to note that small businesses and startups highlighted do not pay to be featured, nor are they determined by a voting system. This initiative is about genuine recognition of the businesses that exemplify innovation, resilience and community impact. Together, let’s celebrate the entrepreneurs and business leaders who make our region thrive.

Here’s to 50 years of championing local business — and to the next chapter of business excellence in the Midlands!

With gratitude and excitement,

Where the Wild Birds Are

ENTREPRENEUR SPREADS HER WINGS THROUGH UNIQUE STORE

In November 2007, Crinda Williams’ life was in a fledgling state.

“A lot of things happened in one year. I got divorced. My youngest of four kids went to kindergarten. My dad came and lived with me, and he died of cancer,” she said. “I had been a stayat-home mom for 15 years. I knew, being a newly divorced mom of four, that I needed to get a job.”

It was a welcome turn of fortune when Williams’ friend, Patrice Wallace, who owned a store called For The Birds with her husband, Jeff, asked Williams to keep the store running through the holiday season before a planned closure. Wallace had moved out of state and it had become impractical to continue managing the business remotely.

“I didn’t know anything in the world about feeding birds or running a business or having a business,” Williams said. “I was looking for purpose at that point in my life, at the crossroads

… We cleared everything out at 90% off and then I decided to stay.”

Winging it

Williams purchased the business, soon adding Wild to the store’s name in hopes of reducing the number of visitors thinking it was a pet store that sold birds. For The Wild Birds sells food for wild birds, plus backyard feeders, birdhouses, birdbaths and related accessories, garden items and naturethemed gifts.

Williams soon relocated the original store from the Old Towne area of Bellevue to Twin Creek Plaza, also in Bellevue, as a nod to her small but loyal group of hyperlocal clientele. Within a few years, she decided to open a more central location in Omaha off 84th and Frederick Streets, hoping the busy corridor would generate more business. It proved to be the right choice, and she shut down the Bellevue store after operating both locations

for a short time and offering free seed delivery to Bellevue customers for a year to ease the transition.

“It was really important for me to do that the right way, and I think eventually most of our Bellevue customers followed us over once they could manage 84th Street well,” she said.

In June 2024, For The Wild Birds relocated a few blocks away to its current site — and largest space yet — off 84th and Spring Streets. The store is thriving even during challenging times for the sector

“There used to be six bird stores in Omaha, and now there’s three,” Williams explained.

The three-times-larger space means Williams can fulfill some long-held dreams of fostering a community of wild bird enthusiasts and like-minded people including home gardeners, beekeepers and pet owners, along with artisans and consumers of crafts, natural products and related items.

For The Wild Birds offers educational presentations, classes and meeting space for these groups, and Williams is also working on facilitating regular and seasonal vendors. Space was also created alongside the building for a native garden which now serves as a monarch butterfly tagging station. Williams even has ideas for new ventures including a birding podcast and a birdseed bank inspired by elderly customers on a fixed income.

Birds of a feather

She and other staff members pride themselves on being a trusted resource, she said.

“(It’s about) being able to serve my customers and putting them first,” she said. “I care whether they walk out with their questions answered and with the right product. I care that what they walk away with is going to work the way I said it was going to work… Our way that we educate, instead of just selling, is a little bit outside of the box.”

Williams said she also strives to create a positive environment for her team and incorporated their input in articulating the company’s mission, vision and values.

“Our mission is ‘Connecting people to nature.’ Our vision is ‘To serve, educate and create memorable experiences in nature,’ and our values are ‘open,’ ‘honest,’ ‘direct’ and ‘kind attitude,’” Williams said. “‘Together, we fly’ is (also) one of our values and that just means, as a business, we all wear different hats in the company. We all clean the toilets, we all water the plants and we all serve the customers.”

She’s learned a few things the hard way, like the need for software training, reading the fine print in contracts, and exercising some skepticism when making business decisions. Overall, however, For The Wild Birds has indeed flown. “I was looking for purpose in my life, and that’s what I got,” Williams said.

Brownie Bar Bakery

Brownie Bar grows into an Omaha favorite

LOCAL BUSINESS TURNS SWEET CRAVINGS INTO UNIQUE DESSERT DESTINATION

Credit Michael Mitilier’s craving a brownie for the creation of Brownie Bar, one of Omaha’s most unique bakeries. “We had gone out to dinner one night and we were looking for dessert, and Michael mentioned, ‘Oh, you know what sounds really good is a brownie,’” said Jim Friedman. “There aren’t places that really feature brownies. You can find cupcake shops, cookie shops and cake shops’ donuts, but no one ever features brownies.”

That night started the ball rolling and the couple believed if they felt that way about brownies then others must, too, Friedman said. They decided to bake brownies from scratch and sell them at local farmers markets.

“When we did well, we found out that we had a lot of interest in brownies,” Mitilier said. “People really do like brownies.”

Community favorite

The floodgates opened. While selling their

wares at farmers markets, people asked if the duo would cater corporate events, which led the pair to start their own brick-and-mortar business.

Opening near 13th and Leavenworth Streets, Brownie Bar Bakery featured a variety of brownies.

They sold about 15,000 brownies in 2024, Mitilier said, and grew to employ four part-timers.

A few months after opening in fall 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the bakery to shut down. Ineligible for federal grants because they were a new business, Friedman and Mitilier shifted gears and began offering online orders, which they delivered curbside.

“People in Omaha were really very generous to independent businesses like us,” Friedman said. “It was enough to keep us sustained.”

Discovering new fans

After three years near the Old Market, Brownie Bar relocated to 108th Street, just outside Rockbrook Village. With its lease about to

expire, the business was offered a different spot inside the retail center and opened at its new location earlier this year. Friedman said relocating to Rockbrook Village, which created a new customer base — families and children — who order brownie packages for occasions such as birthdays and children’s sleepovers.

“Children and women are our largest target market,” Mitilier said. “Probably 80% of our business is women and children.”

With one of the only brownie-centric bakeries in the United States, the owners are constantly seeking new ways to remain viable. Customers can build their own brownies, choosing from 16 toppings such as handcrafted frosting, compote and crushed cookies. People can also order an individual brownie or a flight of three brownies with up to four toppings, Friedman said. Brownie nachos — pieces covered with sauce and toppings — have also become popular, an example of how the entrepreneurs have learned the art of the pivot.

“You go from COVID to inflation, how do you pivot?” Mitilier said. “That’s how we added brownie nachos.”

An Omaha favorite

Since opening, Brownie Bar has annually been named as one of Best in Omaha’s top dessert destinations, Friedman said. For their part, the business owners give back to the

community that helped them during the pandemic. Friedman and Mitilier support women and children’s organizations by donating gift cards to organizations that are used for auctions or in gift baskets. People often ask when they’re going to franchise Brownie Bar Bakery, Friedman said. “They insist, wherever they’re from, they want us,” he said. “’I’m from Seattle,’ or they’re from North Carolina and ‘We need one in North Carolina.’ Yeah, we get it all the time.”

They’ve thought about franchising the business, but not as active owners.

“We’re too old to run it daily,” Mitilier said, “but, maybe have owner/operators. That would be the next logical step.” If they could share a brownie and cup of coffee with their younger selves, the duo has one piece of advice to prepare themselves for opening a business.

“Expect the unexpected,” said Mitilier, with a chuckle. “Be ready to pivot. I think you need to have a goal in mind, but you also need to be focused. You need to allow the outside influences to help you develop your business. For instance, I just don’t think when we first opened, we would have guessed that women and children would be our biggest clients.” Friedman and Mitilier enjoy a great partnership, with Friedman handling baking and Mitilier managing events as well as advertising

Curly Salon

A Cut Above CURLY SALON REDEFINES HAIR CARE

Over a 30-year career as a stylist, Jason Lassek has often heard complaints from women about not getting the hairstyle they wanted. So, in early 2024 he opened Curly Salon, dedicated to women with curly hair.

“They’re having challenges, like they go and they get haircuts and it’s not the greatest experience for them, or they’re being told, ‘Well, you need to straighten your hair before you come in so I can accurately cut it,’” said Lassek, whose own daughter has curly hair. “There’s really a need for this.”

The concept of Curly Salon was to create an all-inclusive space where a person can have their hair treated regardless of the style, he said. With a team of four stylists, each with more than 15 years of experience, Curly Salon averages seven to 12 new customers per week, Lassek said.

“Having an online presence, people like the convenience of just being able to search and

then book directly there,” he said.

Stylists’ experience with curly hair stands out from other salons, Lassek said.

“Although all of our stylists are experts of all hair textures — straight, curly, wavy — I think us being so multi-faceted really kind of sets us apart from other people,” he said.

Unique services

Curly Salon features services such as Japanese head spa treatments that aren’t common in Omaha.

“There are only a few places in the region that offer them; they help with scalp therapy, scalp hydration, hair hydration,” he said. “It really helps to address dryness or if people have oiliness on their scalp. It’s just very relaxing, like an hourlong massage on your head.”

Opening Curly Salon taught Lassek a few unexpected lessons, such as not to hesitate to

open a business, he said. Realizing the need for curly hair care throughout his career, Lassek kept delaying opening his own business because he believed everything had to be aligned.

“To be honest, I learned that I didn’t have to have all the I’s dotted and the T’s crossed, that sometimes you just have to jump in,” he said. “Once you get in the midst of it, then things start really rolling for you. I had managed other salons, but I kept feeling like I’ve got to be at a certain place in my life.”

As it happened, Lassek learned in October 2023 that the space at 316 S. 72nd Street was available and he jumped at the chance to lease it. The infrastructure was in place, with plumbing and electricity ready, so it was an easy decision, he said. He signed the lease by the end of November.

Lassek spent almost every minute of his off-hours in December prepping the salon for a January opening, he said. “December is the busiest month in the hair business,” Lassek said. “Imagine going from doing hair all day and then coming in and working on the business, putting down floors, painting, doing all those kind of things.”

Open-floor concept

Lassek opened for business in early 2024 and Curly Salon quickly caught on with customers. Utilizing an open-floor

concept, stylists rent their space, serving their own client base. Developing the team ranks among the achievements of which he’s most proud.

“Seeing their business really flourish, and then seeing them wanting to invest in other people, and really buy in on the mentorship component of this industry add to that,” he said.

Curly Salon also reaches beyond hair styles, emphasizing community, Lassek said.

“When someone is talking about any community event that they’re hosting, we’re talking about it,” he said. “We post about it. We let them advertise here. We’re always a touchpoint where we can connect people. I think that’s a lot of our community engagement, but then we also participate, like when we had one of the Girl Scout troops here able to showcase the troop and sell cookies.”

Curly Salon’s growth thus far has Lassek eyeing expansion as the next logical step because of the need for curly hair care around Omaha. He’s also interested in creating an apprentice program, training people in curly hair care, as they prepare to become licensed.

If Lassek had his younger self in a style chair, he’d offer him some advice for his future as a curly hair stylist.

“Do it. Even if you’re scared. Just reach out there,” he said. “As soon as I started stepping in that direction everything aligned. I should have done it years ago.”

Karma Koffee

Brewing Success

COFFEE SHOP THRIVES ON CREATIVITY, GIVING BACK

Karma basically means what goes around, comes around. The philosophy of Karma Koffee is to give to the community and good things happen in return. That mantra has worked for 11 years and looks to carry the west Omaha business into the future.

Located where a big-box store once stood at Pepperwood Village, Karma Koffee became central to the community, said Traci Page, who co-owns the coffee shop with Jeff Wilke.

“There was a need for a coffee shop, but not just any old coffee shop would do,” Page said. “It needed to be something local, something familyowned and operated. A place where we could really have a finger on the pulse of the community and provide something different for this area.”

Community support

The COVID-19 pandemic’s impact lingers with entrepreneurs such as Page, who recalls how the

community rallied to save the business, solidifying Karma Koffee’s influence, she said.

“It showed us we weren’t just a business that could come and go; we were a business people wanted here,” she said. “It opened up different ways to conduct business, to try new things. It gave us more freedom.”

Karma Koffee lives up to its namesake when it comes to community, Page said.

“We could have all the coffee and products we want, but without the community, we’d be nothing,” she said. “So, when someone in our community is hurting, we’ve stepped up and had fundraisers or events to aid families in need.”

More than coffee

From the moment a person walks through the doors, Page said she wants people to know Karma Koffee is inclusive and values them.

“I’m proud of Omaha and how we’ve been able to create this amazing local scene, not just coffee

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL

and restaurants, all kinds of local spots,” she said. “In the coffee world, you get the hustle and bustle, the busyness, and I think that’s where we stand apart from the others. [Customers are ] greeted warmly. There’s a give-and-take that shows we appreciate them.”

This approach is in step with Page’s assertion that the business is about more than just brewing and serving coffee.

“I’ve learned that we’re actually in the business of people and we just happen to serve coffee,” she said. “It’s not your typical transactional business. We know a lot about our customers because they choose to share. My background is personal training so I’m used to that world, where you get close with somebody through your time together and they get comfortable sharing their life with you. It’s very much like that.”

Seeking to provide a unique coffee experience, Page’s team plays with flavors, even combining offbeat combinations, all in an effort to create a drink people will enjoy and want. Creating fall flavors, for instance, may go beyond using pumpkin, she said to infusing hickory smoke or rosemary.

“We like to kind of go off the beaten path, she said. “It’s not always going to be your typical standard flavors. There are some fails, of course, and there are ones that are good but they’re not special, which is really what we’re going for. We want something that is unique and special, something that you know a customer is going to taste and be like, ‘Whoa. I’ve never tasted that before.’ That’s the fun of it.”

Adding a food menu made from scratch, Karma Koffee seeks to serve all diets, including vegan and gluten-free, she said.

Looking ahead

Karma’s first decade showed Page the true meaning of community, she said.

“I feel proud that even through hard times, including a global pandemic, we rally and get things done,” she said. “We couldn’t do it without the community. Here we are, in our 11th year. There are so many businesses I’ve seen unfortunately close, and I know we’re lucky. I know that having the support we have doesn’t just come with having a business. It’s cultivated and earned over time.”

There are plans to open a second location in May on Metropolitan Community College’s Elkhorn campus. The college wanted a coffee shop and Page and Wilke saw an opportunity to fill a need for a locally-owned coffee shop in western Douglas County.

After everything she’s been through as an entrepreneur, Page has one piece of advice for her younger self.

“Don’t be scared,” she said. “It’s easy to be scared because we’re taking risks every day. There have been times through the course of 11 years I’ve had doubt. I’ve had fear, but I can honestly say that through those times it’s made me stronger, coming out on the other side and showing me that we can do all things.”

Lust for Life WAVECX FOUNDER BRINGS PUNK ATTITUDE TO BUSINESS VENTURES

Disruptor Jon Tvrdik’s journey from punk rock musician and edgy filmmaker to fintech digital software designer and entrepreneur to hospitality guru is all about a need to create things on his own terms.

The founder of banking platform WaveCX has a strategic innovation consulting agency, The Tvrdik Group; bespoke bars Krug Park and Tiny House; even a television pilot he’s written in development. All of which express imagination and independence that won’t settle for routine.

“The ethos of punk rock is do it yourself and if anybody tries to stop you just ignore it and keep doing it the way you want,” he said. “That has influenced my life in everything I do. I’m always creating things that are interesting to me, whether businesses, designs, films, bars.”

His fascination, even obsession with the process of “seeing an artistic vision all the way through,” he said, “is what started me down the path of being very interested in building something from the ground up, looking at it, being proud of it, and saying, ‘OK, how can I make it better?’ and then building the next thing.”

Legos to punk

Tvrdik has structured a life and career around doing just that. Before joining the local underground music scene at 14 he expressed his

creativity in Legos, building entire cities in the family basement. That same DIY sensibility drove him to write and illustrate comic books, scribble scripts and pen a novel, all as a preadolescent. He also took drama classes at the Emmy Gifford Children’s Theater, now The Rose.

After taking Hollywood veteran Lew Hunter’s screenwriting workshop, he heeded Hunter’s advice to study film at UCLA, where Hunter taught. Tvrdik’s late mentor introduced him to UCLA grad Alexander Payne and the two struck up a friendship.

Now that Tvrdik is a married father of three, he recommends parents let their kids explore artistic expression “because it is a great way to create, be self-reliant and realize there are no rules.”

His punk music career led him to play gigs at The Cog Factory, Sokol Underground, The Waiting Room and Slowdown, as well as touring the Midwest with his band Back When. “My background in punk instilled in me rebellion against this assumption you have to do this one thing over and over again. That’s very antithetical to my life,” he said. “I don’t like being told what I can and cannot do. As a result, I’m in constant stress because I am juggling so many things but I really don’t want it any other way. I’ve dipped my toes at different times in slowing down and focusing on one thing and I found I can’t do that.”

The ethos of punk rock is do-it-yourself and if anybody tries to stop you just ignore it and keep doing it the way you want.

Birth of a business

Music led him into technology. In the early days of the internet, he and his crew taught themselves to build websites for their bands, a skill set that proved valuable because most ad agencies then didn’t have their own web designers. Freelance designing brought him to Omaha digital ad agency Phenomblue, where he found kindred spirits.

“That freelancing turned into, ‘Hey, do you want to come on board and be our executive creative director and build out a team?’” he said. “We were very much move fast and build as much cool stuff as we can and have fun doing it. Work hard, party hard.”

When the business sold, he went into consulting and building digital experiences for clients, starting WaveCX in 2021. WaveCX is an audience engagement platform for banks and digital banking platforms that provides digital banking services for financial institutions.

He came to develop WaveCX when, seeing what other developers and designers did in that space, he had what he calls “a Lego moment” and determined to build something better. Going by client feedback, that’s exactly what WaveCX is.

“We’ve got some really great metrics,” Tvrdik said. “A bank that uses us for engagement inside of banking achieved click-thru rates around 80 percent, which is just insane, most click-thru rates are below 10. They also got a conversion rate of eight percent, which means of those 80 percent who clicked, eight percent got to the end and actually bought the new banking product. Also an astronomical figure. That bank’s CEO said, ‘We’re not going to launch a new product without using WaveCX.’

“Another bank saw a 75 percent reduction in their cost to create engagement content by using WaveCX. Their team is able to do things much faster with WaveCX then they were before in building content for their adoption channels.”

The Omaha-based company’s headcount is small — just six employees — but its digital footprint is national. It has no physical headquarters.

“Our clients are coast to coast,” Tvrdik said. “We’re completely distributed remotely. Our goal is to keep it streamlined so we don’t have to acquire a building. The world is so connected now you do not need to live in New York or L.A. to work with people in New York or L.A.

“Our business goal is currently to work with platforms who resell us to their banks. It’s been a really good model for us. We have credit unions under a billion in assets and banks with a hundred billion in assets. Nebraska is one of the few states we don’t have clients in. Banks here just have different services. It’s a bit of a barrier to entry for us. If anybody would ever like to talk to us we’d be happy to have that conversation.”

Growing pains

The in-your-face, rebellious ethic of Tvrdik’s punk approach also has its limitations, things which he has had to work hard to overcome in himself, such as leading others.

“A skill I had to pick up was being kind but firm,” he said. “Not everybody can or wants to work independently, so they need or crave the leadership to come in and ask how they’re doing. The biggest change for me was realizing that the job is being there for people in both an empathetic and directorial, commanding way where you’re like, ‘This is what I need from you and here’s the guardrails’ and then be there for them as they bump in and out of those guardrails.

“That’s challenging for me because my entire focus is making things that interest me. It’s an extremely selfish point of view. When half my day is doing one-on-ones I’m like, ‘I could be doing so much more with that time.’ That’s the wrong way to look at it; I have to really fight myself to carve out time to be that effective leader.”

Surrounding himself with the right collaborators is key to his venture’s success, individuals with not only the technical chops but the ability to lead and direct in their own right.

“We have grown the business while not trying to hire a bunch of people,” he said. “We’re still trying to keep it really slim. I’m very risk prone in my personal life trying new things, but when it comes to my business, employees and financials I’m very conservative. I only hire when we absolutely need to. I stress the system as much as I can and take on as many clients as the business can but we’re not hiring just for the sake of hiring. I think that’s the death knell for a lot of businesses.”

Now an elder millennial at an age that punk traditionally sneered at, Tvrdik finds it interesting to be old enough to recall a world without the internet while making his livelihood in its ubiquitous use. Artificial intelligence is the new wave of tech and WaveCX is all over it. In January the company launched a new documentation site, powered by its AI-driven generative search tool, Curator. That product gives firms robust search solution capabilities in navigating vast content libraries as well as customers’ and employees’ personalized educational experiences.

AI’s omnipresence, be it in business or for the consumer, he said, is a fact of life.

“It’s not going anywhere. It’s going to be everything because it’s kind of already in everything,” he said. “It’s just making everyone’s software smarter. There’s no sense in rebelling against it or throwing up our hands and saying it’s trash. We just have to figure out ways to use it ethically and make our lives better.”

PRESS RELEASE

Creighton Nursing partners with Children’s Nebraska to address nursing shortage

Looking for ways to combat the state’s shortage of pediatric nurses, Creighton University College of Nursing and Children’s Nebraska have announced a partnership to expand Creighton’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

The initiative will provide full-tuition scholarships to 40 ABSN students over five cohorts beginning in fall 2025. In exchange, all recipients will commit to two years of work at Children’s Nebraska, helping to meet the region’s growing demand for highly trained pediatric nurses.

The launch of this partnership aligns with Children’s Nebraska’s upcoming Behavioral Health & Wellness Center at its main Omaha campus, which opens in 2026 to address the state’s urgent need for pediatric mental health care. The scholarship program will support students as they develop pediatric competencies and prepare to serve in one of 89 pediatric subspecialties across multiple Children’s Nebraska facilities.

Students interested in the ABSN Children’s scholarship are invited to program at creighton.edu.

“This innovative partnership will provide a steady pipeline of highly skilled pediatric nurses for our state, ensuring children and families receive both better physical care and the specialized support they need,” said Jessica Clark, dean of Creighton’s College of Nursing. “Children’s Nebraska shares our commitment to caring for the whole person and we look forward to working with them to form the next generation of health care professionals.”

Pediatric nurses — particularly those with specialties in behavioral health and acute care — are in extremely short supply, making the collaboration between Creighton and Children’s

ONE THAT NAVIGATES.

Nebraska, made possible by the Ryan Foundation, both timely and essential. By equipping more nurses with pediatric expertise, the collaboration directly strengthens the overall health care landscape for children in Nebraska.

“This scholarship program is a vital investment in the future of pediatric nursing,” said Pam Johnson-Carlson, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Children’s Nebraska. “By providing aspiring nurses with the education, experience and financial support they need, we are building a workforce that is prepared to meet the evolving needs of children and families across our region.

“This partnership ensures that highly skilled pediatric nurses will be ready to deliver exceptional care in both acute and specialized settings for years to come.”

Creighton’s College of Nursing is home to one of the nation’s most successful and longestrunning ABSN programs. Ranked among the top 30 nursing programs by U.S. News & World Report, Creighton has been providing high-quality accelerated nursing education for over 45 years, consistently exceeding national NCLEX pass rates. Through the rigorous 12-month program, students complete nearly 1,000 clinical hours, engage in community health projects and participate in a preceptorship, emerging as compassionate, practice-ready nurses.

Children’s Nebraska is the only full-service, pediatric healthcare center in Nebraska, providing expertise in primary care and more than 50 pediatric specialty services to children across a five-state region and beyond. Children’s is home to Nebraska’s only Level IV regional Newborn Intensive Care Unit, the only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center statewide and the state’s only Level 4 Epilepsy Center dedicated exclusively to pediatrics. Children’s is recognized as a 2024-25 Best Children’s Hospital by U.S. News & World Report, ranked among the best in the specialties of Pulmonology & Lung Surgery and Nephrology.

New banking report calls for federal legislation to combat elder exploitation PRESS RELEASE

The American Banking Association Foundation has released a new report outlining the growing issue of elder financial exploitation, what banks are doing about it, and which states have taken up the issue legislatively in the absence of a cohesive federal statute.

“Banks are on the front lines of the battle against financial exploitation,” said Sam Kunjukunju, vice president of consumer education for the ABA Foundation. “From large financial institutions serving clients in multiple states to smaller community banks, the industry is dedicating more resources than ever to this challenge. The findings in this report highlight the determination of banks to help older customers safeguard their hardearned assets.”

About half of U.S. states have “hold” laws, which allow banks to delay disbursements or hold transactions when they suspect financial exploitation of an older or vulnerable person. According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center elder fraud complaints increased 14% in 2023, the report stated, while the Federal Trade Commission notes losses from such crimes may be as high as $61.5 billion.

Findings from the survey revealed nearly half of the responding banks in states with hold laws reported them useful in preventing elder exploitation and more than half believed longer hold periods than currently stipulated are needed to properly adjudicate suspected fraud. Most telling of all, nearly 90% of respondents from states without hold laws say such legislation would be beneficial.

Nebraska has had a hold law on the books for protection of vulnerable individuals since November 2020.

To assess the impact of hold laws in preventing elder financial exploitation, the ABA Foundation commissioned a survey of 158 U.S. banks in states with and without such laws. The findings of this survey, along with insights from one-on-one conversations with bank officials specializing in detecting, investigating and preventing elder financial exploitation, are detailed in the report.

The 158 banks that responded to the survey, conducted Sept. 9 to Oct. 8, 2024, represent 71% of the industry’s number of deposit accounts. They comprise banks of various asset sizes, with the majority having assets of less than $1 billion.

The ABA Foundation reported many respondents strongly advocated for comprehensive federal legislation as a way to combat the problem consistently coast to coast. It also said such a law could offer blanket legal protection that enables financial institutions to use the law without fear of repercussion in court.

“Many banks report that hold laws are effective tools in combating exploitation, and this survey highlights opportunities to enhance these laws, enact such laws or advocate for a federal hold law,” wrote the authors, “all of which further empower banks to protect their customers from the growing threat of elder financial exploitation.”

NICOLE BIANCHI BUILT A THRIVING CONSULTING AND COACHING BUSINESS ON THE PREMISE OF COMPASSIONATE COURAGE

For the past 15 years Nicole Bianchi has lived the dream of owning her own eponymous company, leading people to discover their own inner warrior. That comes as some surprise to people upon meeting her for the first time. In conversation, the woman whose business cards announce her as Chief Bravery Officer/Tough Talk Expert is more bubbly than bare-knuckled with a ready laugh and electric smile.

Which, she’ll tell you, is kind of the point. As she has revealed to clients from the Fortune 100 to Main Street, being courageous is not about merely laying waste to everyone and everything in range. True courage, she contends, is better seen as a mindset, resolute enough to maintain a vision yet flexible enough to allow growth and accommodate learning.

“When I talk about bravery, it is actually an acquired behavior and it takes

practice,” she said. “Think about hobbies — golf, pickleball, whatever — and how you get really good at it. You practice. That’s exactly the way you need to think about bravery. It’s a muscle and the more you practice it, the higher frequency you get, the more confident you get and you deliver much stronger results.

“When we get into a little bit of the neuroscience of bravery and courage, instead of leaning into the fear of it or allowing the fear to take over and cause avoidance, research shows that small, consistent, brave acts actually rewire your neural pathways, reducing the fear. People tend to think of bravery as these grand gestures, like these iconic moments, when in fact small brave moves are what make people brave.”

Bianchi punctuates the science and practice of bravery in leadership with a

healthy dose of examples from her own professional journey. Leaving the farm on which she grew up to pursue a college degree felt like a big step, as did changing majors to organizational development from the accounting and finance tracts she originally started at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Landing an internship with the behemoth ConAgra Brands was another gutcheck moment, as was nearly every day in the role afterward.

“Back then, literally, they said my internship was, ‘You’re going to hire people, you’re going to fire people and we need you to build an affirmative action plan.’ It was the Wild Wild West, they had no systems, processes, things like that.”

Bianchi spent 11 years with the Omaha food giant, which gave her plenty of experiences to draw from to illustrate the power of proceeding bravely.

if I could take everything I had mastered within those two experiences and work with companies all over the world.”

Unlike many start-ups, Bianchi landed a client whale on her first cast with a months-long leadership development project for General Electric which, when successful, was an excellent calling card for attracting additional work. These years later, the roster of companies served is long and includes the likes of Union Pacific, Kiewit, Kraft/Heinz and Google, as well as countless smaller companies and start-ups which seek out her expertise.

FIVE FASCINATING FACTS

MY FAVORITE BOOK IS “THE POWER OF MOMENTS” BY CHIP AND DAN HEATH.

THE ONE THING ALL GREAT LEADERS HAVE IN COMMON, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, IS THEY OWN THEIR GROWTH.

“I became quickly the transformation person; they would toss me into really difficult situations and say, ‘Go fix this, Nicole,’” she said. “One time they had me work on a union contract that Jimmy Hoffa himself had put together. The Teamsters basically said, ‘Nicole, you’re crazy. There’s no way the Teamsters will ever break a legacy contract that Jimmy Hoffa himself had put together.’ I was like 32 at the time, and I just said, ‘OK, you know what, we’re gonna figure this out.’ Nine months later, we broke the contract and it wasn’t by giving away money and buying our way out of it, it was convincing them to see the bigger picture of what really needed to happen.”

MY FAVORITE BINGE-WATCHING TV SERIES IS “FRIENDS” - ALWAYS!

ADVICE I’D GIVE MY 17-YEAROLD SELF: “DON’T PUT SO MUCH PRESSURE ON YOURSELF, DANCE WITH LIFE MORE, EARLIER.”

ONE HIDDEN TALENT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT ME IS MY GIFT FOR SINGING OFF-KEY KARAOKE.

Her next professional role was equally instructive, one in which she joined a company that was disrupting the insurance industry through use of new technology just in time for the tumultuous year that was 2008.

“Everything was falling apart in the world that year,” she said. “We had to make some really tough decisions and bring a lot of discipline to a company that had been experiencing double-digit growth, which hides a lot of the sins. I was there for five years, again, transforming not just HR, but they gave me facilities procurement, all purchasing, and they kept giving me more and more. I ended up starting my own business because I really wanted to see

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re a startup company, a nonprofit, a Fortune 500, or insert any type of company and industry here, the challenges are the same,” she said. “They all need to do the tough talks, they need the mindsets, behaviors and habits to make the small brave moves. I had a phone call earlier today with a Fortune 10 company, then I was in front of a nonprofit group at the local chamber, and then I was having a one-on-one coaching call with a startup entrepreneur. They all have the same challenges.

“Here’s what’s beautiful about it. I get feedback in the days, weeks and months to come from clients after I work with them and they talk about how they’ve applied it not just in leadership, but in life. They’re taking these things and applying them in their personal life or in the community or in their family, which is pretty cool.”

Having firmly established herself as an expert on leadership and bravery in word and action, including through two acclaimed how-to books, Bianchi is now looking to solidify her legacy by reaching as many people as she can with these life-altering skills.

“I want to make bravery accessible to all, and I want to elevate how we communicate in this world,” she said. “I view this work that I’m doing as obviously transformational, and I want the generations to come to know these concepts as very important and applicable. That’s how I want to leave my thumbprint on this world.”

Most economists are decidedly against tariffs. They increase prices and reduce consumer choice. Accordingly, this could reignite inflation which could force the Fed to begin raising interest rates again. This, combined with lower consumer spending on tariffed goods, increases the risk of an economic slowdown and a possible recession. Sure, tariffs can raise a little revenue for the government over time, but the risks outweigh the reward. Also, it certainly doesn’t help diplomatic relations with many of our overseas allies. Didn’t you hear about the Canadian hockey fans booing during our National Anthem?

This seems to be the consensus take. However, what if it’s wrong?

As the chart above shows, the U.S. has some of the lowest trade barriers among G20 countries. This includes explicit tariffs and non-tariff barriers, such as regulations, rules of origin and quotas. When President Trump complains that the U.S. is not treated fairly, he’s not wrong. We allow other countries to sell their goods in the U.S. without much friction. The same is not true for our companies selling products overseas. This is not what “free trade” should look like.

Like many others, we are unsure how this trade war will play out. However, we do realize that the adverse take that many economists have on tariffs is pretty static. It doesn’t account for the longer-term benefits of U.S. consumers choosing to purchase goods that are domestically made and the ensuing jobs that creates. Ever wonder why there aren’t many foreign pickup trucks in the U.S.? It’s largely due to the 1963 “chicken tax” that placed 25% tariffs on all imported trucks as a retaliation for European levies against U.S. poultry. However, foreign automakers are a major supplier of light vehicles, which

were only subject to a 2.5% tariff previously. Sure, the “chicken tax” only generated $104 million of duties last year compared to $3.6 billion for light vehicles, according to government data. However, pickup trucks are some of the most profitable for U.S. manufacturers, cultivating jobs and fueling technological advancement. The proverbial scorecard shouldn’t be just duti es alone.

President Trump’s trade war is a dynamic situation that presents many potential outcomes, which is spooking investors. Economists seem certain that most of these will be negative. However, as the “chicken tax” has shown, there are a lot of benefits to encouraging U.S. consumers to buy American beyond just advertising campaigns.

MARCOS E. MORA, CEO, CASA DE LA CULTURA/ FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BARRIENTOS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

Midlands Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in the community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. To nominate someone for this section, email news@mbj. com with the individual’s name, position, company and email.

Bio:

As a musician, philanthropist, and serial entrepreneur who has dedicated his life to preserving and celebrating Latino culture, Marcos Eduardo Mora Barrientos began his performance career at the tender age of 7. He eventually helped form Nebraska’s largest mariachi group, Mariachi Luna y Sol; co-founded El Perico, a Spanish-language Omaha newspaper in 1999; and in 2005, founded the Barrientos Scholarship Foundation. Today, he serves as the CEO of Casa de la Cultura, which oversees Omaha’s annual Cinco de Mayo and Fiestas Patrias Festivals. In 2023, Mora was awarded the Henry Fonda Award, Nebraska’s highest tourism honor.

What initially sparked your interest in civic leadership?

Civic leadership has always been part of my family. I come from a strong line of leaders. One person who stands out in my memory is my uncle Larry. He was one of the founders of Latino Center of the Midlands (formerly Chicano Awareness Center), and the way he and my uncle Carlos carried themselves had a huge impact on me. They both went to UNO, and being around them was like being with second parents. Their influence really shaped how I saw the world.

I think another big part of it came from my own experiences with racism as a kid. I was bullied and those moments stuck with me. I always had this deep need to help others, to support the underdog. I think that’s where my sense of civic engagement really took root, through empathy and wanting to uplift others who didn’t have a voice.

What is something about you people may not know?

A lot of people think I’m a total extrovert but honestly, I’m more of an introverted extrovert. I was a really shy kid, quiet, thoughtful, always thinking through things before speaking. With time and confidence, I found my voice.

Sports definitely helped build that confidence — I was undefeated in wrestling and involved in all kinds of athletics, but the real turning point

was college. That’s where I really came into my own, learning how to engage with others, getting involved, and starting to share my ideas. I found the confidence to speak up, to lead and to want to make a difference.

What’s one project that you’re working on right now?

I’m really excited about celebrating 105 years of Mexican festivals in Omaha. That’s a huge milestone. We didn’t get to celebrate the 100-year mark during COVID-19, so this feels extra special.

For me, it’s not just about the festivals themselves, it’s about honoring the contributions of the Mexican-American community in Omaha. We’ve

done so much over the years, and I want people to see that. You can learn more about all of this at USLatinoHeritage.com.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?

Follow your dreams and push even harder. Life moves fast. As you get older, you realize just how short it really is. I’d tell my younger self to surround yourself with smart, inspiring people and learn from them. One thing we’re not taught enough about is investing. We’re told to work hard, get an education and be a good role model, but no one tells you how to grow your wealth or invest for the future. If I could go back, I’d start much earlier.

When a guest is coming to Omaha for the first time, where do you take them to experience the city?

If you want a really good taco, I’m taking you to Taqueria Tijuana. Craving some of the best chicken around? I’ve got you covered at Don Gaby’s. Want dessert or ice cream? Then we’re heading to La Michoacana. Looking for a fun, authentic spot for sweets? International Bakery is a must.

The cool thing is you can get all of that right along South 24th Street. You can literally walk up and down the street and experience so much variety. Plus, there’s also incredible Guatemalan and Salvadoran food if you’re in the mood for something different. It’s a beautiful mix of flavors and cultures. I love it; it’s what makes south Omaha special.
