SHIFTING THE WAY WE WORK BY DAVID KUBICEK

DEREK KRUSE

CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER, DOTCOMM

Workplace tech continues to evolve to fit the needs of organizations, which brings new opportunities to local companies. Derek Kruse, chief information officer of DOTComm, said there is a major shift toward enabling an agile and mobile workforce. “Whether it’s a more reliable infrastructure, better tools or improved access to real-time information, technology is the catalyst for a

business environment that is in a hyper-change mode,” he said. “This is driving firms to embrace more flexible cloud solutions and to invest in beefing up internal network infrastructure.” The side effect of this rapid change is an increased focus on security and sustainability. The security piece is driving an investment in better firewalls, identity and access management solutions, and training.

CHRIS WILLIAMSON

FIELD CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER, FNTS

“We’re seeing a focus on long-term investment over time, versus large, up-front, capital investments in technology,” Kruse said. “This ensures sustainability while also allowing for more flexibility to change vendors or products.”

Need for tech skills

A workforce demand that will continue to

grow is that nearly every job across all industries today requires some level of technical skill, said Nicole Wheeler, director of membership & tech talent services at AIM. “The biggest challenge facing the employment landscape is a shortage of tech workers,” she said. “In Omaha alone, there are nearly 1,200 technology jobs currently open. To create a sustainable tech sector, addressing the

Denise Mainquist, founder and managing director of ITPAC Consulting, said that another big trend is software as a service. The big positive is that a third party handles updates and management of servers and software, which also establishes authentication and security protections. On the downside, sometimes managers forget to disable employees’ access after their employment has ended, so a terminated employee could still log in from home. “Since IT is often not involved with the procurement or management of these services,

Page 6 • November 12, 2021

the controls around access management can be very weak,” Mainquist said. Over the past several years, many companies have moved to cloud computing to take advantage of greater scale, lower cost, and fully managed infrastructure, according to Chris Williamson, field chief technology officer for FNTS. “Many companies are now shifting their computing strategy to place technology in the environment best suited for it from a cost and performance standpoint as opposed to unilaterally taking technologies to public cloud providers,” he said. “This means locating technologies in private clouds, either self-managed or MSP-managed, and/or with multiple public cloud providers.” Many business leaders are shifting to usagebased technology options to avoid large capital outlays each time core technologies like servers or storage need to be refreshed. “Companies pay just for the capacity they use so they have more control and predictability over their spending,” he said. Edge computing is a strategy in which computing workloads are deployed in close proximity to where data is being generated, analyzed and used. “Edge computing is used in situations where moving large amounts data — such as internet of things (IoT) devices like sensors data — isn’t practical or when collecting analytics closer to their usage point is more timely,” Williamson said. “FNTS partners with many local organizations that use these strategies to accelerate their missions and build on the learning achieved over the course of last year. By researching the value of approaches like a multi-cloud operating model, we see clients position their technology to drive cost efficiency and create new opportunities for growth.” The large tech providers continue to build on offerings in their cloud ecosystem, provide new tools, and simplify the integration of data

A third party brings a different perspective regarding risks, potential issues, and ways to address issues. - DENISE MAINQUIST, FOUNDER AND MANAGING DIRECTOR, ITPAC CONSULTING LLC and platforms. “While these developments may seem overwhelming at times, there are clear opportunities for local companies to gain advantages through thoughtful usage of these expanding solutions,” Williamson said. “We’re also watching how cloud technologies evolve into their next stage and what new advantages that may bring. AI and machine learning may get more tactical in the next few years which should make applying it more predictable and useful for organizations.”

A tech community

“Omaha is fortunate to have Fortune 500, 1000 and other large companies based here that are great community partners and committed to building a strong tech ecosystem,” Wheeler said. “These organizations support and attend our nonprofit’s events, leadership academies and conferences like the Heartland Developers Conference and AIM Tech Awards happening in

November. These are inexpensive events that bring the technology community together and serve as a conduit for sharing best practices, provide important networking opportunities and rally organizations around the vision of working together to make Omaha a thriving tech talent community.”

Increased accessibility

“There is not a big global name that I can think of that does not have a presence in our community,” Kruse said. “Recently we have seen more flexibility and pricing for the scale needed by smaller firms. As cloud solutions become more ubiquitous, we’re seeing pricing and solutions, which allow small scale needs to be met by extremely large-scale global solutions. Those may have been out of reach a few short years ago. Now, we’re seeing these solutions as accessible and affordable.” “Since nearly every company today has significant technology needs, building an

incubator for the growth of the technology sector will only become more important,” Wheeler said. “Building this talent pipeline benefits the entire community because highdemand, high-wage technology jobs help create the conditions for an economy that can continue to grow faster than the national average, full of career opportunities that help develop and retain talent and support economic development in our region.”

Kruse said that over the next few years there will likely be continued consolidation of large vendors and solutions. “[This] will allow local businesses to work with one vendor only to meet a larger percentage of their needs, but the consolidation can lead to a lack of viable or flexible options for smaller firms or firms who are not satisfied with the service they are receiving,” he said.

TIPS FOR DOING A TECH AUDIT The easiest way to perform a preliminary technology audit is to query the people who use the technology every day, Kruse said. Employees in many cases are used to more advanced technology in their personal lives — smartphones, cloud software, streaming television — and when they come to work, they are frustrated and disappointed. “Ask them what could be improved to make them more productive and effective,” Kruse said. “Technology investments should answer the question: What problem are we trying to solve? If that question cannot be answered clearly and unambiguously, there is a problem.” To conduct a thorough audit call in an independent third-party firm to identify

technical debt, but make sure you are working with a partner who has no conflicts of interest and can provide an unbiased analysis. “A third party brings a different perspective regarding risks, potential issues, and ways to address issues,” Mainquist said. “Third parties bring additional experiences to the situation and can often help with troubleshooting.” Finding a partner with deep experience but a flexible engagement model is key for most organizations. “Many teams we work with at FNTS don’t have a clear picture of what they have, what state it’s in, or what risks they might be exposed to,” Williamson said.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

MANUFACTURING PROJECT MANAGER ROB WATERS AND PRESIDENT DAVE WATERS, PURITAN MANUFACTURING

Heavy Metal PURITAN MANUFACTURING COMBINES CRAFTSMANSHIP AND TECHNOLOGY Time was when companies like Puritan Manufacturing jostled for space and market share in Omaha — family-owned, independent shops where trades and craftsmanship were handed down one generation to the next. The passage of time and the changing manufacturing landscape shuttered many of those places while those that survived, like Puritan, look very different than they once did. “Things changed in the ‘70s and from there [technology] took off like a rocket,” said Dave Waters, company president. “At one time, we had 88 employees back in the early ‘80s. With that, we almost had more problems than solutions because of the inability to control variables. So, we started investing in equipment pretty heavily and buying new equipment. We started leapfrogging with the technology and have been trying to keep up with it ever since. We’re now in a technological age where we have machines that we can run unattended on the weekend. So, it’s quite different from what it used to be, for sure.”

Strengthening legacy Waters and his brother Bill have seen much of this change up close, having been involved with the business for multiple decades, ultimately taking over

for their father Joe who acquired the company in the 1960s. Over the years the brothers strengthened Puritan’s legacy industries such as custom fabrication, food processing equipment and storage tanks while expanding to include component manufacturing, ornamental metal work and laser cutting. “That’s one thing about our background and our history is that we’ve been diversified over the years,” Waters said. “We’ve always been kind of jumping markets based on demand. With that, the equipment that we purchase also kind of falls into place with that footprint. “For instance, we have a CNC drill that drills 60-foot-long beams, four feet tall and it’ll drill hundreds of holes in very little time. But it’s also adaptable to other types of projects.” The company’s latest investment employs that philosophy to the fullest: a German-made laser that can handle a dizzying number of projects at surprising speed. “Our latest investment is one of the largest pieces of equipment we’ve ever bought,” Waters said. “We had CO2 laser capability before, but we went to the sixkilowatt fiber laser, and it has automation. Basically, it loads and unloads itself and it

will process 50 sheets of material in a couple of hours whereas before, it would have taken a week.” Despite its robust capacity, such machines typically require only one operator and with remote control capability, can even do the work unattended.

Skilled workforce Such machines have so fundamentally transformed the industrial workplace that it’s changed the profile of employees Puritan looks to hire into its 30-member employee force. “We look for the people who are self-starters; they can think outside the box, and they can do a variety of things,” Waters said. “We like our employees to be able to be flexible, to be able to do different things and allow them to move around based on their skills and abilities. “We’re able to pick and choose a little bit better because we’re not looking for a volume of labor, we’re looking for skilled, quality labor. The people that we have here now are keepers; they enjoy being here and we enjoy having them.” While the bulk of Puritan’s work serves a 200-mile radius, it’s handicraft can be found all over the United States with the stray international job here and there. Among the more pedestrian steel beams and metal components are some more

unique jobs. The company has brought to life artists’ metal sculptures, for one thing, destined to be installed as public art. “One of the projects was a pump tube setup that went down to the Oklahoma City area where they have the training facility for the Olympics,” Waters said. “The guys that get in kayaks and ride the rapids train there. These pumps generate all the waves and the velocity in the water to replicate those rapids. “We did the Washington, D.C. subway system back in the ‘70s. We made the tooling for them to dig the tunnels. Another example of a Kiewit project was when a hurricane happened in Louisiana, we did some tooling. We made some of these large pylons to drive for the flood walls they built down there.” Waters said the challenges of running a small, independent manufacturing firm are rivaled only by the family’s pride in the company’s longevity, a legacy that continues through his son, Rob, who is on staff. It’s something his father would have approved of, he said. “My dad was a great guy. He instilled these values of our work in our lives. Rob has that same aptitude for the work; he’s proven himself and he’s doing a great job,” Waters said. “This is a family business and those values continue to be what drives us to do what we do.”

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

WOMEN WHO rock CAMMY WATKINS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES

DOING good

CAMMY WATKINS FIGHTS INEQUITY, BUILDS DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION In Cammy Watkins’ 19-year career in the nonprofit industry, she admits to saying “no” more than “yes” to leadership roles. Sometimes, imposter syndrome crept up, her personal insecurities and misconceptions about what it meant to be “ready” to lead. Other times, the intentional marginalization by those in positions of power was clear. “I had one executive director tell me that I ‘lacked vision,’ and that I would challenge them sometimes and ‘nobody would want that [in a direct report],’” Watkins recalled. “Instances of being passed over or having to beg for a title change (without a pay increase) to give myself better chances for advancement take a toll on one’s psyche. I had to do a lot of self-work, and it took having a really supportive supervisor to help me recognize that I am worthy and I shouldn’t feel as if I don’t deserve or belong in positions of power.” Today, Watkins is an executive director at Inclusive Communities. She shares the role alongside Maggie Wood. Together, the duo work to balance inequities via the 83-year-old nonprofit, formerly known as the Midlands NCCJ (National Conference for Christians and Jews) chapter. The NCCJ was first reportedly formed in response to the violence and bigotry of the 1930s, characterized partly by active KKK groups, and the rise of Hitler and Nazism.

“There is a common theme of the inequities experienced by people who are the ‘other,’ or the minority,” she said, when reflecting on a diverse range of former organization-employers. “I see it as my responsibility to make a difference in this world before I leave it. And I truly feel like I am, and can continue to do that, with Inclusive Communities.” A high school-aged Watkins would have answered, “opera singer,” “arts administrator” or “child psychologist” when asked the question of “What do you want to be?” So, at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, Watkins naturally studied psychology and vocal performance. She found herself still gravitating toward human services and interpersonal relationships — just not as a therapist. “So, I decided to work with underserved youth and families,” she said. That led to embarking on her nonprofit career at Head Start. “After receiving my BA, I knew that I wanted to work in the nonprofit industry as it would allow me to follow my purpose of making a difference in the world,” Watkins said. “I wasn’t sure how I would make a difference but was willing to go where I was called or drawn to.” Watkin’s willingness to go wherever she could follow that purpose and make a difference is evidenced by her transition into environmental activism.

I had to do a lot of self-work, and it took having a really supportive supervisor to help me recognize that I am worthy and I shouldn’t feel as if I don’t deserve or belong in positions of power. - CAMMY WATKINS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES

“The Sierra Club is really where I gained the best work experiences and learned how to navigate all sorts of obstacles through collaboration,” she said. The Sierra Club ultimately led to present-day work with Inclusive Communities. “There is so much work to do,” Watkins said. “We need people who are willing to do the heavy lifting and take chances to be innovative and creative and fail to get to the success.” Work experience has been Watkins’ “best supplement” to a fantastic college experience and education. “It’s important to me to show people that higher education is not the only path to leadership and success,” she said. “We have to shift that narrative, especially as the cost of higher education increases and access to higher education isn’t available to everyone.”

The power of support

Unlike other industries, the nonprofit space has been dominated by women. “In particular, white women,” Watkins said. “While we are starting to see more women of color move in to leadership positions, it is still a rarity.” With that being said, Watkins doesn’t see herself as a trailblazer. “I am so average and ordinary,” she said. “There are so many people who have done and said all the things I have done and said, they just

weren’t profiled for it. There is nothing extraordinary or pioneering about me, and I think that is great. “I like to champion us average folks who are capable of great things, because it shows that, with the right nurturing support and access to opportunity, anybody can do extraordinary things.” As it relates to “extraordinary things,” Watkins received the Young Black and Influential Award in the 40s age category this year for her work in advocacy and around the community. “[The award] was a cool and unexpected honor,” she said. She credits such successes to those who have “poured into me their greatness, even at the detriment of their own success.” “That includes my family and friends,” she continued, “but also strangers or people I met along my life journey.” Individuals like Watkins’ third-grade teacher, Pam Pirsch Williams, Sierra Club supervisor Steve Thomas, and leadership partner Wood truly “saw” her. Likewise, Watkins has gone on to inspire others by “waking up every day and putting in work.” “I believe it’s not enough to talk about it,” she said. “We have to be about it. So, that’s what I try to do, and I hope it inspires others to do the same.” Watkins jokes that she is still trying to sort what she wants to be when she “grows up.” “I just follow my heart and look for the places that I can do some good, whatever that might be,” she said. “That place for me right now continues to be Inclusive Communities.”

GENE KLEIN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, PROJECT HARMONY

FOR THE children

GENE KLEIN GUIDES PROJECT HARMONY THROUGH PROGRAMMING If Gene Klein had launched and grown his own startup 20 years ago in the way that he’s led Project Harmony over that time, it would be one of the biggest forprofit success stories in recent Omaha history. Instead, he accomplished something far more important: shepherding the essential nonprofit through substantial growth in people, programming and impact. “When I came here in 2002, we had five employees and served about 400 children a year,” said Klein, who’s been executive director over the entirety of his tenure. “Today, in 2021, we have about 110 employees and we’ll serve over 6,000 children this year.” Project Harmony can be thought of as the hub into which the spokes of government agencies at the city, state and federal levels connect to carry out a shared purpose of responding to cases of child abuse and neglect. This adds a level of complexity to Project Harmony’s mission, to say nothing of the programmatic growth that has come along in response to community needs. “Back in 2007, our board took a turn in the mission of the organization,” Klein said. “We used to be the organization that just responded to abuse and neglect.

The board added to our mission to put an end to it.” That decision opened up new dimensions for the nonprofit, including training and education programs serving audiences from professionals responding to abuse cases to educators, after-school program personnel and day care workers who discover evidence of abuse, to the public at large. Today about 12,000 people are trained annually on how to deal with such situations appropriately.

A VISION

Jim Jansen, chief legal counsel at Creighton University and board member and one of the founders of Project Harmony, said Klein’s instincts for community needs and his ability to pivot and execute new programs are two distinguishing characteristics of his career. “He’s got an amazing, well-focused vision for our agency,” Jansen said. “When I say Gene’s got this amazing vision, from the very outset he thought that there would be a realistic path forward to ending child abuse in our lifetime. That was a formidable task, focused on education and prevention training for a number of

people who are enrolled in the child welfare system. His ability to collaborate with people within the child welfare industry is second to none.” Klein’s vision continues to yield innovative services that address abuse and its effect on children and youth, be it direct or indirect. In 2015, Project Harmony launched Connections, which sought to proactively identify kids in need of counseling. That program now leverages 80 therapists in the community who are deployed as needed to serve 135 local elementary schools. Then, between 2017 and 2018, Klein led the launch of the equally ambitious Missing Youth Services program, mending a hole in the social safety net through which slip as many as 3,000 youth annually. “Missing kids tend not to be immediately reported,” he said. “These are children that parents report as a son or daughter who ran away after a fight and they haven’t been home in two days. Law enforcement would find those children and then return them back to the home. For some kids, maybe something was going on at home that caused them to run or to leave. “Law enforcement saw the need for doing more for these families. So, we created a response for those kids with specialists who sit down and talk to them about what’s going on and what the family needs to do to minimize that running behavior. What we do know is when you’ve got an 11-, 12-, 13-year-old who is routinely running, they’re prime targets for sex trafficking. So, we see this work as trafficking prevention.”

HELP THROUGH DARKNESS The pandemic has brought specific challenges, such as more severe abuse resulting from kids quarantined with their abusers and deprived of live school where they could ask for help. Knowing this lends additional weight to the job. Klein regularly reminds managers to focus on staff stress levels, as well as their own coping skills — part of an overall responsiveness his staff appreciates. “Under Gene, we’ve developed very focused efforts on secondary trauma and burnout, because we do see that a lot in our work,” said Colleen Roth, senior director of response services. “He’s definitely a man of his word, easy to communicate with. I can walk in at any time and say I want to problem-solve or bounce something off him and he’s always open for that.” Klein admits that decades of this kind of work is a taxing assignment. Yet through even the darkest days, the 2004 Midlands Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree said the positive outcomes far outweigh the stressors of his job. “To be a part of an organization this mission critical is rewarding,” he said. “While we see some of the darkest stuff that go on with children, we also are a part of opening up the other door, which is hope and healing and moving them on to something new. There’s darkness, yes, but there’s also a ton of light that happens in this work.”

REDEFINING PET CARE

SMALL business AARON SHADDY, CEO AND CO-FOUNDER, PETFRIENDLY

Pet Pioneer

PETFRIENDLY CHANGING THE WAY WE BUY FLEA AND TICK MEDS At first blush, the Dollar Shave Club and the subscription pet wellness market may not appear to have much in common; however, Aaron Shaddy took a deeper dive. Turns out, he was barking up the right tree. The commonalities between the markets served as the genesis for what would become PetFriendly, the Omaha-based subscription service that is redefining the way pet owners buy flea and tick preventives. “The market sizes of men’s grooming and flea and tick prevention are roughly the same,” said Shaddy, chief executive officer and co-founder. “Both products are lightweight and economical to ship. Flea and tick is dosed on a monthly cadence, but easily forgotten.” In a monthly subscription service, Shaddy continued, one’s mail carrier becomes the reminder of when it’s time to protect your pet each month. “This initial product is a perfect fit for a subscription delivery service,” he said. Three years onward from when Shaddy and fellow founder, Chief Operating Officer Ryan Finstad, signed up PetFriendly’s first customer, the service is poised to double its staff in Omaha in the next year. Additionally, Shaddy noted that the company is positioned to expand into a larger space to accommodate more staff, inventory and fulfillment operations.

At the time of this writing, the company was based at 8616 G St. employed 25 people (and counting). “The pandemic led to a surge in pet ownership as people found themselves working from home and homeschooling their children, and as they needed the companionship, comfort and smiles pets can bring during a time of uncertainty,” Shaddy said, adding that 70% of U.S. households have a pet at present. “The subscription economy was growing before the pandemic, but the pandemic accelerated the trend toward online delivery and subscription services.” This confluence of factors, as referenced by Shaddy, is characterized by a subscription economy that is expected to double in size within around four years (by 2025). “The investment and our plans for future growth align with these market trends,” he added. The aforementioned investment reflects a Sept. 15 announcement, whereby it was reported that the flea and tick prevention company had closed $6 million in seed funding. An affiliate of McCarthy Capital, the announcement reads, as well as Revolution’s Rise of the Rest Seed Fund,

Emil Capital Partners and Invest Nebraska led the round. When asked about what made PetFriendly so attractive to outside investors, Shaddy referenced its mission: Keeping pets healthy and “their humans” happy. In part, he said they’re distinguishing themselves on the customer service front, as well as with its high level of customization of products. “We put each pet’s name and photo on the box, and deliveries often include personal notes and other touches,” he said.

Getting a paw up Shaddy said pet ownership has grown every year for as long as he’s been in the companion animal business. His career started off in the late-1990s with Conagra brands. One of Conagra’s divisions at the time was Sergeant’s Pet Care Products, where Shaddy and Finstad would first work with each other. The duo would go on to partner together for many years before launching PetFriendly. The “always growing” pet market has coupled with what Shaddy characterizes as the “humanization of pets” to contribute to its keen outlook. After all, that means “there are more consumers spending more money on their pets each year,” he said. This, combined with trends toward direct-to-consumer subscription business, have made the companion animal “space” attractive to investors for some time, according to Shaddy. “We’ve self-funded the business to date,” he said. “During that time, we

matured our systems and processes.” These systems and processes facilitated quick and effective scaling, according to Shaddy, while balancing the customer service that has defined the business since its inception. “We decided to raise our first outside investment to fuel faster growth and expansion into other products and services,” he said. To that end, they are actively hiring for a variety of full-time roles — marketing, social media, customer experience. “In addition, we’re always looking for part-time ‘boxers,’ the team members who pack our shipments,” Shaddy said. Once hired, all team members essentially work within the same space on the warehouse floor, with little separation between the warehouse and the office. PetFriendly’s culture is also defined by its community support. In fact, an early September announcement reads that the company donated 20,000 doses of flea and tick medication to rescue organizations impacted by Hurricane Ida. Going forward, the company is positioned to dip its metaphorical paws into other products that protect the health and well-being of our furry family members. “We’re interested in all pet wellness products consumed on a monthly cadence,” Shaddy said. “Our goal is to provide a broad assortment of monthly products, making it easy for pet parents to take the best care of their pets.”

community college campaign TO ADDRESS CYBERSECURITY WORKFORCE SHORTAGE THE MICROSOFT HEADQUARTERS CAMPUS IS PICTURED JULY 17, 2014 IN REDMOND, WASH. MICROSOFT SAID THURSDAY THAT IT IS WORKING WITH COMMUNITY COLLEGES ACROSS THE NATION TO TRAIN STUDENTS FOR CAREERS IN CYBERSECURITY.

Microsoft launched a training program for community college students on Thursday in an effort to fill 250,000 cybersecurity jobs by 2025. The company will make its cybersecurity curriculum available for free to all public community colleges across the country and offer 25,000 scholarships. It will also train faculty at 150 community colleges through a grant and partnership with the National Cybersecurity Training and Education Center at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham. Many data breaches companies and organizations have suffered “could have been prevented or substantially mitigated ... if they had applied cybersecurity best practices,” Brad Smith, president and vice chair of Microsoft, said in a news conference. But one of the biggest problems is that institutions “don’t have

the people they need to fill the jobs they’ve created.” For every two people in America who work in cybersecurity, there is a third position that is unfilled, according to CyberSeek, which collects data on cybersecurity employment. With 464,000 cybersecurity jobs open nationally, Microsoft’s goal is to help fill half those positions with this campaign. It adds to a growing list of investments the company has made to combat cybersecurity threats. In August, the company said it would invest $20 billion over the next five years to add further protection for its customers. And the company will invest $150 million to help government agencies boost protections for the public as part of a White House campaign to partner with the private sector to improve cybersecurity. Smith said the average cybersecurity professional earns a salary of $105,800. He said this campaign is not only an opportunity to get more people into these high-paying jobs but also a way to make the profession more diverse. More than 80% of cybersecurity professionals are white, and 80% are male, but 40% of community college students are Black

or Hispanic, and 57% of students are women, Smith said. The initiative comes just days after Microsoft flagged that Russian-backed hackers have been targeting government and corporate computer networks since the summer. The company said these hackers are the same actors that in 2020 targeted customers of SolarWinds, a Texas-based IT company, which led to significant federal government data breaches. In March, Microsoft suffered a cyberattack of its own when Chinese hackers breached the company’s Exchange email server. Unlike the SolarWinds hack, which primarily affected large companies and organizations, small and medium-sized businesses were most significantly affected by the breach. “We’ll probably ... never get to the point where we have enough workers in the field” given how fast technology is changing, said Kathi Hiyane-Brown, president of Whatcom Community College, in the news conference. She said that’s what makes cybersecurity training for new and existing workers so important. “It is an occupation or career that really promotes lifelong learning.”

AT LEAST $100,000 FOR RETIREMENT

SWAPPING A 4-BEDROOM ABODE FOR A 2-BEDROOM IN A BIG METRO AREA SUCH AS SAN FRANCISCO CAN NET HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR YOUR RETIREMENT.

Of all the moves you can make heading into retirement to shore up your finances, actually moving might be the biggest win. An analysis of housing costs and property taxes in the 20 largest metro areas estimates the average savings from downsizing is nearly $200,000 over 10 years. If the kids are finally launched into adulthood, parents looking to shore up their finances should give some serious thought to what they might be able to achieve by moving to a smaller home. StorageCafe analyzed the price difference between two-bedroom and four-bedroom homes, factored in the costs of buying and selling (commissions, moving, etc.) if someone made that move, and what the differential would be in property tax owed on a less expensive home. In the 20 largest metro areas, the average savings was $194,000.

Where downsizing nets the most

No surprise, the biggest net savings are in the priciest markets. San Franciscans willing to go a bit smaller could save an estimated $407,000 over the 10 years. Most of it is from the price differential in a bigger vs. smaller home — nearly $1.6 million on average for a four-bedroom home, and around $1 million for a two-bedroom. The tax savings would be an additional $28,500. After closing costs of nearly $157,000, that nets to an estimated downsizing win of $407,000. In the San Diego metro area, the net savings is nearly $265,000. In the L.A. metro areas, the 10-year savings is $240,00. Seattle is the fourth-biggest win, with a downsizing savings of nearly $235,000. Miami and Boston clock in with savings of more than $230,000. The New York City metro area, Detroit and the Washington D.C. metro area all could deliver estimated downsizing net gains of more than $200,000. The only big metro area with a downsizing win of less than $100,000. The most modest gain from downsizing is in the metro Phoenix area. The estimated average 10-year savings is around $93,000. The remaining 10 biggest metro areas (Philadelphia; St. Louis; Dallas; RiversideSan Bernardino, California; Chicago; Denver; Tampa-St. Petersburg, Florida;

Houston; Minneapolis, and Atlanta) have estimated downsizing gains of between $107,000 and $194,000. The analysis is likely on the conservative side, as it didn’t factor in potential savings from lower utility bills. Nor does it consider the potential gains from taking any savings from the actual move and investing it. Or earmarking the savings to help you pull off another valuable retirement move: having the high income earner in a household delay starting Social Security until he or she reaches age 70. That ensures the biggest possible benefit. If you retire in your 60s, you can still delay taking Social Security, knowing you’ve got this pot of money to tap if you decide you don’t want to keep working part-time through your 60s.

Age in place in a right-sized place

This analysis seems to deliver a pretty obvious financial incentive to consider downsizing your home sooner than later. Of course, there’s the hurdle of letting go of the home you raised the kids in. And accumulated so many memories in. And then there’s the internal conversation you’re having with yourself right now: What about hosting family gatherings with the grandkids (to be)? Deep breath. Your family will still gather at your smaller home. They just might stay in a

hotel or Airbnb nearby. Before you think that will be so disappointing for them, ask them. But ask them the right question. Not what they think about you moving to a smaller home. But what do they think of you shoring up your retirement security. Because that’s what this move gives all of you. (If you don’t think your adult kids worry about the logistics, safety and cost of helping a much older you, you’re selling them way too short.)

Moreover, this move in your 50s and 60s gives you an ideal time to set yourself up for a successful retirement. You can think through all the elements of a home that will be kind to an 85- or 90-year-old you. No stairs (or fewer). Less maintenance. Maybe closer to town, so getting out and socializing is easier and not dependent on you, or your friends, needing to drive on the highway. There’s tremendous upside to downsizing before you retire.

LEGAL notices

The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document to the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment options are cash or check. 3. Deadline is noon on Tuesday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5. You will receive a paid invoice copy the first week it runs.
