A LETTER FROM THE publisher A New Year
OF IMPACT AND CELEBRATION As we welcome 2026, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey that has brought Midlands Business Journal to this pivotal moment in our history. In this year, we will hold a celebration for our 50th anniversary — a milestone that represents not just five decades of business journalism, but 50 years of telling the stories that matter most to our community. Stories of innovation, perseverance, and the remarkable people who make the Midlands business community thrive. My father, Bob, founded MBJ in 1975 with a vision: to chronicle the business heartbeat of our region and connect the people driving economic growth and community progress. That vision has never been more relevant than it is today. As we prepare for our Golden Gala on March 26 at The Durham Museum, we honor extraordinary leaders like Mike and Gail Yanney, Willy Theisen, Johnny Rodgers, Mike Cassling and Cella Quinn — individuals whose impact extends far beyond their business achievements into the fabric of our community. Our ongoing IMPACT 250 project showcases what I’ve always believed: that behind every business is a story of vision, determination and community connection. These are the stories that inspire, inform and unite us. In 2026, we’re committed to deepening our connections, expanding our reach and continuing the legacy of authentic business journalism that has defined MBJ for half a century. We’ll celebrate our past as we embrace the future, always with our focus on what matters most — you, our readers, and the dynamic business community we’re privileged to serve. Here’s to a year of growth, celebration and continued impact. With gratitude, Andrea “Andee” Hoig Publisher & CEO Midlands Business Journal

Sandhills Elixir ERICA WASSINGER, OWNER
Zero-proof Alternative
AQUIFER WATER FUELS ALCOHOL-FREE BEVERAGE GROWTH As people participate in Dry January following a holiday season of drink and merriment, Sandhills Elixir offers a tasty and safe alternative to alcohol. Using fresh, clean water from the Ogallala Aquifer in northwest Nebraska, Sandhills Elixir brings a unique taste to its nonalcoholic zero-proof flavors, including chokecherry, cranberry, elderberry, ginger lemon, jalapeno and sage. “(If you’ve been in the Sandhills), you kind of know that mystical magic that happens up there, really and truly,” said Erica Wassinger, owner. “It’s that place where you can kind of ground yourself, and you feel at your best, and simple things go overlooked almost, but they’re incredible. The tap water is incredible because it’s straight from the aquifer and that’s purified through the sand and naturally replenished. You just don’t realize how much better it is until you leave.”
Dry January alternative
More than 20% of American adults participated in Dry January — not consuming alcohol — in 2025, according to Morning Consult. As more people turn away from alcohol — nonalcoholic spirits grew 29% in the United States in 2024 — Sandhills Elixir’s flavors present a drinker with the taste of liquor without evoking specific alcohols, Wassinger said. “We purposely chose not to use a head-on mimicking of alcohol flavor, so you won’t liken it to a vodka or a gin,” she said. “We didn’t want people to be disappointed that it doesn’t taste enough like whiskey, that it’s not enough like gin. I think we really have struck a strong balance.” Not to be pigeonholed as a replacement for liquor, customers have told her that they use Sandhills Elixir as a third drink rather than having another shot of whiskey Page 6 • January 2, 2026
MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL BY TIM TRUDELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEBRA S. KAPLAN
“Of all the businesses I’ve worked on, this one reminds me the most of being in a small town, because it’s grown like a small town would help grow a family. - ERICA WASSINGER, CO-OWNER, SANDHILLS ELIXIR
or other alcohol, Wassinger said. Sandhills make an excellent option for mocktails, especially during Dry January, she said. She also creates her own drinks. “If I’m really feeling like a mixologist one evening, I can mix it with some spritz or some syrups, or things like that, to kind of doll it up a bit,” she said. “I get the experience of having a gorgeous cocktail and a wonderful drink, and I can still wake up feeling wonderful the next morning.”
Health benefits, growth
Sandhills Elixir’s flavors also offer health benefits, Wassinger said. “Our sage product helps with cognitive function,” she said. “Our chokecherry offers heart health benefits. The Turkey Tail offers anti-anxiety, relaxation. We tried hard to not just replace alcohol, but also to bring in that side of the Sandhills, those native grasses, that help you feel better.” As a small business, she and her family often sat in their living room hand-labeling bottles, renting a U-Haul to deliver inventory to customers, Wassinger said. Then an article by Flatwater Free Press changed everything, she said. “It was really very organic, very gritty, at the time,” Wassinger said. “We went from selling, I don’t remember how much a day, to completely selling out of every single bottle we ever produced. We ended up having to go to our parents’ houses and say, ‘I
know we gave you bottles. Give them back.’” That popularity continues today, largely because Sandhills Elixir listens to its customers, she said. “We’re more moderate, like our roots, and that has kept us on the shelves of liquor stores in Norfolk, consistently selling out,” Wassinger said. “It’s kept us in the refrigerators of ranchers in Valentine, who have it sitting next to their Busch Light, and it’s got us on the menus of James Beard Award-winning restaurants. It’s that intentionality that we found from our customers. I think it really did make a huge difference into where we fit and where we land in people’s homes, on menus at bars and restaurants and on the shelves of boutiques and grocers across the country.”
‘Small town’ support
Looking back, Wassinger said she would trust others more when building a business. She learned to rely on her partners and others in the Valentine community to help Sandhills Elixir become a successful business, Wassinger said. “You can be super scrappy and you can be lean, and you can do all those things, but you have to have a very strong village of talented people,” she said. “Ask them earlier, let them be the experts earlier. Of all the businesses I’ve worked on, this one reminds me the most of being in a small town, because it’s grown like a small town would help grow a family.”

JPalm Hairdressing BY KARA SCHWEISS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROGER HUMPHRIES JORDAN PALMER AND ALEX BAUER, OWNERS
Safe Space for All
GENDER-FREE SALON PRIORITIZES CONSENT AND ACCESSIBILITY Jordan Palmer starts every client’s appointment by sharing their own pronouns and asking for the client’s preferences as well. And although it’s a given that they will be touching the client’s hair and head during a cut, Palmer always asks for permission. It’s part of JPalm Hairdressing’s mission to be affirming, gender-free and accessible and is a simple matter of kindness and respect, Palmer said. “I’m also queer, I’m also neurodivergent, so I’m trying to create a space that is comfortable for people like that,” said Palmer, who owns the business along with their spouse, Alex Bauer. “I think that salon environment can be really intimidating for a lot of people, and so creating a space that’s accessible, inclusive and affirming was kind of a top priority,” Bauer said.
Instagram attention
Palmer, a licensed cosmetologist, has focused on haircutting since the business launched in 2019. Bauer’s background includes a business degree and a master’s in public policy and public administration, so she’s drawn on her years of experience in the nonprofit sector to work behind the scenes. Both were rather surprised when JPalm garnered some national attention after some Instagram videos Palmer posted of their standard consultations went viral. “I would ask this person, before I touch their hair, ‘Can I touch your hair?’ And that created so much conversation online,” Palmer said. “I’ll never forget coming home that day and Alex being like, ‘So many people have interacted with this post on Instagram, and you’re going to be surprised why: It’s the consent question.’ People like my haircuts, but I didn’t realize that the consultation would be so attention-getting.”
JPalm serves an adult clientele but will also accept appointments for older teens and younger teens on occasion who need a safe space, Palmer said. They work with all hair textures and lengths and any gender expression, and a fun niche that’s emerged is transformative haircutting for a brave new look. “I’m the person to go to when you actually want to cut your hair, not just a trim, and have that experience when you’re going through a lot in your life and you’ve got to have a big hair chop,” Palmer said.
Powering through
Palmer worked for other salon owners for nearly a decade before branching out on their own. JPalm was only in its second year when the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, but Palmer and Bauer powered through. “I think it’s a really big milestone that we’ve been in business for five years now. Finally, I can write myself a paycheck,” Palmer said. “I think that we’re in a really great spot; location-wise, I love where JPalm is located. In terms of milestones, the business finally looks the way that I always thought it would — or even better.”
Accesibility oriented
The owners take pride in a salon that’s accessible in multiple ways, not just gender-affirming and neurodivergent-friendly, but navigable for individuals with mobility impairment, for instance, and even accommodating for clients struggling to make ends meet. “We’ve gotten to the point now where we offer five appointments every month that are ‘pay what you can’ so that we truly are accessible, not only physically but also financially,” Bauer said. “We know that not everyone, especially within our queer community and our younger communities, can always have access to salon pricing.”

Bonafide Dog Academy BY TIM TRUDELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROGER HUMPHRIES SUSAN BAILEY, OWNER
Dog Care with a Heart
OWNER SEEKS SMALL, QUALITY CARE FOR DOGS Emphasizing positive reinforcement — no electronic, shock or prong collars — Bonafide Dog Academy has grown from a dog sports complex to a full-fledged day care and training facility. “There’s only a handful of businesses here in town that actually have a place to do group classes and that also are positive,” said owner Susan Bailey. “So it was important to us, because if they go away, that’s a disservice to the community.”
Growing into dog care
Bailey took over Bonafide Dog Academy from Jeff and Dawn Mitchell in 2019. The 24-year-old business grew from its original concept as a sports complex near 144th and Grover streets to its current location at 960 S. 72nd St. Along the way, Bailey rented space at the Ralston Veterinary Clinic and then a larger training facility at 108th and Harrison streets. After completing training classes, people were concerned about leaving their dogs home alone, Bailey said. That led to Bonafide moving to its current facility in 2022. “So we started a very small, structured day care,” she said. “There are a lot of facilities where the dogs are just in one room, running around, playing all day long. And, in our humble opinion, that is a recipe for disaster. Not all dogs get along. If something happens, it can elevate very quickly, and we didn’t want any part of that. “We do enrichment activities with the dogs. When it’s nice, we take them out on walks. That was the pivotal moment that started where we are today.”
Structured care
While there is a play area for dogs that enjoy social interaction, Bonafide Dog Academy also offers space for canines that enjoy quiet, solitary time, Bailey said.
“Those are our younger dogs that want more sleep, or just want a quieter environment, don’t like being with a bunch of others or they’re shy,” she said. “We’re working on integrating them. Most of the dogs eventually will come back.” Besides day care and training classes, Bailey supports the Omaha community by creating dog-related baskets for nonprofits, as well as participating in events like Doggie Barket and Pick-a-Pooch. Holidays at Bonafide are a fun time for dogs, Bailey said. Donating a dog-themed Christmas tree for the Tangier Shriners’ Feztival of Trees is an annual favorite. “We also do Santa Paws,” she said. “We often have the same dogs coming back. We even had a bearded dragon here twice.”
Creating quality trainers
Committed to ensuring dogs are well-cared for, Bailey’s staff works with the Future Farmers of America chapter at Ralston High School. Some students end up volunteering at the academy. “We help students understand exactly how to get into dog training,” Bailey said. “Dog training is an unregulated business. I’m always willing to help anyone who wants to learn.” With limited kennel space, Bonafide Dog Academy focuses on quality over quantity, Bailey said. “I don’t want dogs who are reactive, who could be dangerous to our staff, who are scared of people,” she said. “Most of the dogs that come here are fine with playing with other dogs, but sometimes we have dogs that just don’t particularly like to play with others, and I don’t exclude them. We do one-on-one activities with them.” If Bailey could talk with her younger self, she said she would offer advice about owning a business. “Go all in,” Bailey said. “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Always try to be innovative. Don’t quit. Just keep trying. And if something doesn’t work, try something else, or just be open to possibilities.” Page 9 • January 2, 2026

Foundations Business Group BY TIM TRUDELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAYLEIGH TIPTON ROB HALVERSON, OWNER
Foundations for Growth
MASTERMIND GROUPS CONNECT OMAHA BUSINESS LEADERS Referring to himself as a graybeard, Rob Halverson had no plans to ride off into the sunset of retirement. Instead, he created Foundations Business Groups, consulting with other businesses to help them grow. “I wasn’t ready to drink beer with the dog,” Halverson said. “If I can be a small part of other people’s success, nothing feels better.” After 27 years with Snap-on Tools, Halverson created Foundations Business Groups to give business owners accountability, support and insight to move forward with confidence. “I learned firsthand how powerful it can be to step out of the day-to-day and connect with other business owners,” he said. “I wanted to give back a bit, strengthen the local business community.”
Building through shared ideas
Foundations Business Groups creates mastermind groups where leaders share ideas and grow together, Halverson said. Running an organization can feel overwhelming. Without a trusted group of like-minded people, it’s easy to feel isolated, second-guessing decisions and wasting time on trial-and-error strategies. “After years of running my own businesses and helping others grow theirs, I saw firsthand how powerful this mastermind format can be,” he said. “It really showed me how peer groups can accelerate growth. That experience has shaped how I lead the mastermind groups I run today.”
Accountability drives results
Foundations Business Groups members don’t just discuss ideas, they’re expected to follow through, Halverson said. “Say you and I were together, and you leaned in,” he said. “We had 10 other business leaders lean in on your opportunity or issue. We’re going
to expect you’re going to do something. When are you going to start this? What help do you need? We’ll do anything we can for you. Our sole purpose is each other’s success. It’s stated on every placemat in front of every member, every meeting.” Peer groups are powerful tools, he said. “I’ve always tried to surround myself with talented people, but I didn’t realize how much more growth happens when you bring together diverse perspectives,” Halverson said. “These are smart people. You bring them all together, and they’re all very talented at something. It pushes you to think differently. You see opportunities you might have missed on your own.”
Expanding the community
A majority of members have seen growth after consulting with others, Halverson said. With its success, Halverson said he’d like to grow Foundations Business Groups from a village of supporters to a conglomerate of business leaders. “Moving forward, we’re focused on expanding our community of growth-minded businesses,” he said. “It’s all built on repeatable processes and driving sustainable results.” If he could consult with himself as he started his career, he said he would advise young Rob to follow his passion. “Clearly articulate what you want to achieve, develop your ‘why,’” Halverson said. “Define your core values and stay focused on what’s most important. When you have that foundation in place, it’s just a matter of rolling up your sleeves and going to work. Don’t listen to the naysayers. That’s where the growth begins.”

Turning the Page
WOMAN-OWNED BOOKSTORE HONORS 43-YEAR FAMILY LEGACY Shelly Mutum sat in the young adult aisle of her parents’ bookstore and read. For hours. It was, she says, like the world was her oyster — surrounded by every book she could want, in a place that felt like home. That was Prairie Books and Gifts in Hastings, where her parents Bernie and Jane Tessels ran a bookstore for 43 years. Mutum grew up there, watching the business move from the mall to downtown as retail trends shifted, traveling to book conventions in Las Vegas and Chicago, meeting authors and standing in autograph lines. “I lived in that store,” she said. “That was my life.” When Jane was ready to retire in 2019, Mutum asked if she could bring the bookstore to Omaha and keep the legacy going. Her mother said yes. That’s why the quaint store in midtown Omaha is called The Next Chapter.
Surviving the unexpected
Mutum opened in October 2019. The holidays were fantastic. Then came 2020. “(The years) 2020 and 2021 were pretty rough,” she said. “But you just kind of clawed your way through because you had to. I didn’t have another choice.” She survived what most businesses couldn’t: a pandemic hitting just months after opening. This year marks seven years in business, a milestone she considers a major achievement. “If I can get to five years, I’ve really done something, right?” she said. “Every year was better than the last.” The reality of running a bookstore differs sharply from the romantic
view shown in the movies. Mutum thought she’d spend her days reading. Instead, she’s carefully curating inventory, managing overhead, and running pop-up events at breweries and festivals across the region. She partners with Bluebarn Theatre for book sales tied to their productions. She drives to Harlan, Iowa, for silent book club events. “Book people are the best people,” she said.
More than Amazon Mutum is direct about her value proposition: She’s a locally owned, woman-run business whose money goes back into the community. “If you buy from Amazon, I don’t know who you’re helping other than a billionaire that doesn’t know you and doesn’t care,” she said. “I’ve had more and more people say they’re trying to get away from corporations and really support the businesses in their community.” Her advice to her younger self reflects the emotional weight of entrepreneurship. “Be kind to yourself,” she said. “Give yourself some space and grace. Don’t be so hard on yourself.” Bernie and Jane have both passed away. Mutum carries forward what they built, honoring their 43 years of work with every book she sells and every customer she welcomes. “I love telling the story,” she said. “I love talking about my parents and what they built and what they did.” The Next Chapter isn’t just a bookstore name. It’s a promise. Page 11 • January 2, 2026

Mentorship in Action
SISOS BUILD COMMUNITY THROUGH TAEKWONDO INSTRUCTION Mauro Siso immigrated to the United States from Venezuela as a child. Upon arrival, his father promised to enroll him in taekwondo lessons. “He’s a man of his word and he made that happen within the first few months of being here,” said Siso. In his early 20s, Siso made the decision to move forward with his long-held dream of owning a martial arts school. His desire to serve people, coupled with his love for taekwondo, propelled him forward. “I knew martial arts, I knew teaching, as I’ve spent my life doing both,” he said, adding that “figuring out the business aspect to it” proved to be difficult. He leaned on his business education from Metropolitan Community College, plenty of research and trusted mentorship to steer his journey toward martial arts school ownership.
Learning opportunities
Siso opened the school, Siso Martial Arts, in 2013 and has learned some valuable lessons along the way, especially in 2020 when adaptability was the name of the game. Not wanting to halt operations entirely, he found ways to keep the programs going, even when students weren’t allowed to gather. Classes and instruction moved to an online format and belt rank advancement ceremonies evolved into instructors driving to recipients’ homes and presenting belts via a long bo staff so as not to break pandemic safety standards. “It was an opportunity to learn,” Siso said. “By overcoming it, it has positioned us to thrive, then and now.” At its core, Siso Martial Arts is about service. The business is well-known for being active within the local community, hosting
an annual trunk-or-treat that draws big crowds. Siso frequently speaks at school assemblies, promoting leadership, courage and entrepreneurship. He and his Siso Martial Arts co-owner, his wife Jaris, actively volunteer in hosting teacher breakfasts and other teacher appreciation events.
Creating community
That same love for people and desire to create community permeates the atmosphere of the martial arts school, which caters to a wide and diverse clientele. It’s that emphasis on community that helps set Siso Martial Arts apart from similar martial arts schools in the area. “People often comment on loving the diversity at our school,” Jaris said. “People from all walks of life are there. We genuinely care about relationships with the families. The relationships don’t start or stop with martial arts. We uplift everyone so our our families feel seen and special and right at home.” Mauro said finding mentors has been extremely valuable, and still is, even years after he started working toward his dream. He estimated that having mentors offer valuable advice and encouragement helped him cut in half the time it took to open his school. The Sisos also would advise fellow would-be entrepreneurs to show fearlessness, to “just get started” while heeding the advice of a knowledgeable mentor, Mauro said. Overthinking can cause friction. In the near future, the Sisos hopes to move to a new facility. It’s the next big goal for the martial arts school as it continues to grow. Page 12 • January 2, 2026

Upside Same-Day Dental Crowns BY TIM TRUDELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROGER HUMPHRIES THE DOCTORS DUDZINSKI: JORDAN, COLIN, LOGAN AND BERNIE
Crowning Achievement
PRACTICE PROVIDES SAME-DAY DENTAL CROWNS Noticing they performed a lot of crown work at their New Image Dentistry practice, the Dudzinski family also observed high costs dismayed some patients from having the work completed. Dental insurance doesn’t always encourage people to have work performed, said Dr. Colin Dudzinski. “It’s almost kind of the opposite with dental insurance. You hit your max and then your benefits run out. Or certain procedures may not be covered,” he said. “So a lot of times, patients would need work to be done but couldn’t really afford it or needed to wait until next year. We kind of thought there was an opportunity here to offer a quality service at a reduced cost.”
Affordable prices, quality care
Opening Upside Same-Day Dental Crowns, dental service is offered at an affordable price, said Dr. Logan Dudzinski. Listing prices on its website, the clinic also serves uninsured patients. “The idea was just to make the crown experience faster, more affordable and more convenient, while still providing high-quality crowns for patients,” he said. Upside Same-Day Dental Crowns doesn’t outsource its lab work, so the staff can make a mold of the crown and have the work completed in house.
Same-day service
Rather than wait weeks, patients spend a few hours at the office, the Dudzinksis said. The clinic was designed with patients in mind. Sofas and chairs create
a comfortable environment where people can watch television or visit with others while awaiting their work to be completed. The dentists have noticed a positive change among patients, helping them regain their confidence, said Dr. Logan Dudzinski. “Restoring someone’s smile, it’s more than just their appearance,” he said. “It affects how they eat, how they talk, how they feel about themselves. Patients get emotional in our chair from the work that we’ve done on them.”
Serving seniors on fixed incomes
Upside Same-Day Dental Crowns serves a range of patients in need of help, said Dr. Colin Dudzinski. “A part that I’ve really noticed is helping out the elderly population, people who are retired and losing their insurance,” he said. “I think we provide an awesome opportunity for them to get good quality care without really putting themselves in a tight financial situation.” The owners see their services as the future of dentistry, said Dr. Logan Dudzinski. If he could advise other dentists starting out, he said he’d tell them to be patient and stay the course. “Running a business, there are a lot of highs and a lot of lows, but the highs make it all worth it,” he said. “Building something from scratch, it wasn’t easy, but I feel like we are making a difference in the world.” Trust the process, said Dr. Colin Dudzinski. “Things are going to feel like they’re moving slow,” he said. “A big part, too, is assembling a good team and trusting others to help you build your vision. That has been pivotal for us.” Page 13 • January 2, 2026

CHAD Returns GROUP READIES WORKPLACE GIVING CAMPAIGN
The Combined Health Agencies Drive is preparing for a July 2026 launch as it reenters the Omaha metro area workplace giving campaign arena, the organization has announced. For more than 50 years, CHAD has been a cornerstone of Nebraska’s nonprofit landscape, uniting passion, purpose and impact for 24 statewide health agencies. Each year, CHAD partners with businesses and industries across Nebraska to raise critical funds that support causes ranging from chronic disease management and disabilities to end-of-life choices, mental health, cancer research, AIDS prevention and everything in between. “Raising funds through workplace campaigns is incredibly important, but it’s only part of our mission,” said Michelle Grossman, president and CEO of CHAD. “It is just as critical that metro-area employers and human resource teams know where to turn when the most important part of a company’s success, its people, needs help. When an employee, spouse or child is facing a serious diagnosis, CHAD connects businesses to real people at trusted, Nebraska-based agencies who can provide meaningful, compassionate support quickly.” What sets CHAD apart is that it doesn’t just raise funds, it helps ensure those dollars reach programs that provide both immediate assistance and long-term solutions for individuals and families across the state. The organization’s evolution reflects both opportunity and intention. Opportunity because the metro area’s business community brings a rich culture of innovation and civic leadership that aligns naturally with CHAD’s mission, and intention because CHAD believes meaningful impact grows from partnerships
rooted in shared values, strategic thinking and sustained engagement. To local corporations and advocates, CHAD offers a suite of engagement opportunities including tailored workplace campaigns, collaborative events, cause marketing initiatives and community investment strategies that align with corporate social responsibility priorities. The organization’s expanded metro presence is designed to deepen partnerships by building sustainable, long-term relationships that amplify impact. CHAD aims to make health and wellness a central part of corporate culture in the metro area. Individuals and businesses interested in being part of what matters most — health — are encouraged to contact CHAD at info@chadnebraska.org. Relief Fund Tops $50K
MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL
LEXINGTON FUND DRAWS STATEWIDE, NATIONAL SUPPORT The Lexington Community Relief Fund, which officially opened on Dec. 12, 2025, has raised just over $50,000 through contributions from residents, statewide donors and partners, and supporters from across the nation. This broad show of support reflects the far-reaching impact of the recent Tyson plant closure and the strength of community solidarity during a challenging time. (Editor’s note: Tyson Foods is set to lay off 3,200 workers in mid-January 2026 from their plant in
Lexington, a town of around 11,000 people.) Funds raised will be dedicated to providing direct assistance to individuals and families through locally identified support agencies and organizations that work with those affected by the closure. Community relief support is anticipated to begin in early January 2026, helping address immediate needs as impacted individuals navigate this transition. The Community Relief Fund is overseen by the Lexington Community Foundation and remains open to
contributions, which can be made at lexfoundation.org. Donations are greatly appreciated, as the needs within the community are significant and ongoing. Additional details, including eligibility requirements and the application process for assistance, will be shared soon to ensure those affected know how to access available support. The Lexington Community Relief Fund remains committed to supporting impacted individuals and strengthening the community through collective action.
