RUNNING EVENTS POPULAR FOR CORPORATE ENGAGEMENT

In Greater Omaha, walks and runs are a popular way to raise funds for a good cause, while also encouraging corporate participation through sponsorships and team building alike.

“OPPD and Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD) host Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth every year for a few reasons,” said Jodi Baker media specialist with Omaha Public Power District. “First, runs and walks tend to have good participation, especially when there’s an option to be competitive. This kind of event has proven to be a successful fundraiser to support OPPD and MUD utility bill payment assistance programs for customers in need.

“It also makes sense for us in terms of raising awareness of the plight so many of our customers face. We intentionally host our event in the cold winter months to bring attention to their struggle to keep their homes safe and warm.”

Wellness Culture

The 16th Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth, held in March, attracted more than 900 participants across all divisions. Baker said just like many of the corporate sponsors of the event, OPPD/MUD’s efforts to encourage employee participation are in-line with its focus on health and wellness.

“At OPPD, we stress the importance of physical and mental health and safety. It’s a big part of our core values of having a passion to serve, honoring our community and caring about each other,” she said.

Across the nation, running is booming and with it the various races that give beginning and experienced runners an outlet on virtually any weekend, coast to coast. Statista reports 50 million Americans listed some form of running or jogging as part of their fitness regimen in 2022. Race participation grew last year by 16%, per Running USA. According to the report, the 5K is the most popular in the U.S. with 8.9 million registrants

last year – this is after participation declined by 13% between 2017 and 2019.

The average running age was 39 in 2019, according to the International Institute for Running Medicine, suggesting that a 5K will continue to have a strong base of participants for years to come.

Supporting the Mission

Pam Schwarting, assistant athletic director, external relations with the University of Nebraska at Omaha Athletics, is the race director for the Classen-Leahy Maverick Run, now in its 12th year. She echoed the observation that many companies promote such events to employees as a relatively easy and very visible way to emphasize employee health.

“We have a lot of companies that have put it through their wellness groups,” she said of the Classen-Leahy run. “They run it through that department and give their employees incentives to come participate. A lot of them bring 50 runners and I even have a corporation that brings over 100 people out to it.”

The event, which attracts about 2,000 runners, raises between $80,000 and $120,000 annually to help fund athletic scholarships.

“This is my twelfth year and I’ve seen a big uptick in sponsorships and people wanting to be involved in it,” she said. “[Companies] love the fact that the proceeds go to support student-athletes with scholarships. A lot of corporate participants are also alums, and a lot of them want to support

the university and athletics. That’s a big part of the reason why a lot of them want to be a part of the event.”

Jessica Niemann, PTA program director and instructor at Clarkson College, also pointed to the mission of a run as being as important if not more so than raising funds. The PTA Fun Run, first held in 2019, is still in the growing stages in terms of overall participants. But while numbers are building, the focus on the cause behind it is fundamental.

“One big part of our motivation for this is because we teach a therapeutic exercise class very well-aligned with cardiovascular fitness and exercise,” she said. “We wanted our students to be able to train for something, have an accomplishment and be able to also do that by promoting health and wellness for the community, including the Clarkson College community and their families.

“If we can bring people together who have a connection with our students and with our faculty and with the college, it just brings about camaraderie. It’s not to get as many people as possible to run in the race so that we can make more money. It’s really about getting a community of people that are going to want to be together and be supportive of this.”

Easier to Organize

Niemann said organizations thinking about an athletic-based fundraiser should consider a running event because of the relative ease of setting up.

“One of the main things is it’s just easier to access,” she said. “We did think about a cycling race, however, not everybody has bicycles and for those who are traveling that can be a little harder. The idea was to make it fun and family-friendly and accessible. And, we love the Field Club Trail that is just south of us; it’s so convenient for people to train on if they want. It’s just a really pretty area in the middle of Omaha.”

That said, organizations hosting such events should invest time and resources to help the event stand out in a crowded field. This includes

upping the quality of the course to properly staffing it with volunteers.

“When we put on an event, we make a point to be fun, inclusive and approachable,” said Lindsey Rodgers, director of marketing and PR for The 712 Initiative, which hosts the annual Shamrock Shuffle 5K. “We are there to make our community better. Developing relationships with businesses makes it easy for us to reach out and say, ‘Hey, let’s do this together.’

“When setting up volunteering, we are very aware of how valuable time is. We make a plan to keep our volunteers busy and engaged. We also try hard to make it an environment where groups are having fun and not just

feeling like it’s another day at work. A DJ blasting tunes and making food, coffee and drinks available create a great atmosphere. Being strategic on how it all comes together makes it easy and volunteers come back to do the same tasks because they have the confidence that they are really helping make the event great.”

Providing Value

Similar attention is paid to what perks can be extended to corporate partners as an enticement to participate.

“While a monetary donation is typically sought-after when putting on an event, we see the value in getting companies to participate and so we offer them group rates,” Rodgers said. “This event also gets a lot of exposure, mainly promoted digitally through social media and on our website. Sponsors also have the opportunity to set up a tent at the event. This gets them in front of a captivated audience.

“Our sponsors add to the energy of the event but also help in promoting it. We work closely with them to make sure they get exposure and credit for helping put on a great event.”

Another powerful incentive for participation is building an element of competition into the event. One of the best examples of this is the annual American Lung Association Corporate Cup, which not only awards individual runners for finishing first in their respective events but also awards companies for fundraising and running performance.

“The awards are traveling trophies, with bragging rights,” said Julia McCarville, executive director for Omaha’s American Lung Association.

“We have our top fundraising team and our fastest team by division – one to 99 employees, 100 to 499 employees and then 500 plus.

“The common thread we see at our event is just the synergy between employees coming together. They’re so delighted to spend time with each other outside of work. You see competing businesses, you see businesses that work together in support of a common goal. I think that, at the very core, is what makes this event special, that while we do have individuals participate, this really is a corporate-driven event.”

Tell a Compelling Story

The Corporate Cup attracts participation from more than 400 companies, creating a field of about 3,000 runners across various distances and age categories. McCarville said any group looking to attract more corporate sponsors to its event should examine how well its mission is articulated.

“I think we are incredibly fortunate to exist in a community that is so supportive of our mission at work,” she said. “In this community, lung cancer is the No. 1 cancer killer of both men and women. Asthma is the leading cause of absenteeism. COPD is the No. 3 cause of death across the state of Nebraska. We have an incredibly high rate of asthma exacerbation.

“Corporations are built on people and every person has a connection to lung disease. If you can’t breathe, nothing else matters. We really promote the message that every registration fee is a donation supporting those affected by lung disease and lung cancer.”

Finally, McCarville said, taking time to adequately thank sponsors goes a long way toward sustained participation.

“We’re so lucky this event has been around for so long. We have people leading teams now who were pushed in strollers in the 1980s Corporate Cup,” she said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to put this event on and thankful for the support of local businesses without which we could not do our mission.”

Building a Culture OF GOOD CITIZENSHIP AT BCBSNE

While sponsorships and philanthropic efforts may seem to be merely a “nice-tohave” component of business planning, many Midlands companies make community investment a top priority.

It’s no different at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE), where supporting communities across Nebraska is a key aspect of corporate culture. Company leaders are proud of the organization’s buy-in for strengthening health and wellness initiatives throughout Omaha and the state.

An Outpouring of Culture

“Community engagement is a core part of who we are,” explains Kim Arnold, vice president of marketing and communications at BCBSNE. “Our involvement and investment in our communities is a genuine extension of our mission.”

That investment stems from the company’s drive to support the health and wellness of Nebraskans across the state. “We have a long history and deep roots in Nebraska, and we are committed to impacting the communities where we live, work and raise our families,” says Arnold.

Employee engagement and volunteerism are vital parts of BCBSNE’s culture. Arnold notes, “Our employees share their time and resources to support causes and organizations that make a difference in so many people’s lives, like our annual United Way campaign, our statewide CHAD sponsorship and others.”

An additional, positive byproduct of the company’s commitment to Nebraska communities is the heightened morale and strong employee retention it engenders, BCBSNE leaders say. “Our employees frequently say, ‘I love being a part of Team Blue because I know the impact we have on communities.’ That means a lot to people, and it builds a unified culture of caring,” says Molly Billings, director of HR operations.

Selecting the Right Causes

BCBSNE regularly supports efforts related to health and wellness. The company sponsors bike races, supports first responders, and promotes mental wellness summits and health care industry educational conferences, to name just a few events.

One flagship effort is Born and Raced in Nebraska (BRIN), an annual collection of 10K runs in the Omaha metro area. The series brings together thousands of athletes for Nebraska-themed races. “Any athlete will tell you: Race Day or Game Day makes worthwhile all the training, all the lifestyle changes, all the preparation,” says Arnold. “Those long-term choices are what foster health and wellness, and that’s what we want to catalyze as a company. Making Race Day possible is part of our vision.”

“The causes we support are important to us. They reflect who we are as a company. We are giving a gift, but we are also getting one back. It’s truly uplifting,” says Kathy Nellor, health transformation leader at BCBSNE.

In 2022, BCBSNE partnered for an eighth year with Project Fit America, a charity that provides physical education equipment and curriculum to schools across the country. In 2022, BCBSNE made a $18,000 donation to fund construction of a playground and exercise gear at Hitchcock County Elementary School in Culbertson, Nebraska.

“This grant goes far beyond just installing playground equipment,” notes Nellor. “We go in and really show these schools how to get their students involved and excited about using the equipment to stay active and healthy.”

Start Small and Sustain

For companies willing to get started with community engagement, Arnold offers two key pieces of advice:

First, start small and plan to make a sustained effort over years. Second, root your giving decisions in a cause you’re deeply passionate about.

“We do see business results,” Arnold explains. “People come to know [BCBSNE] and what we stand for, and we earn trust in the community. We take that very seriously.”

“But it’s not directly measurable — you can’t make a simple ROI calculation on it. So, in order to truly make a lasting impact, community engagement must be a matter of both practice and passion.”

LOCAL COLLEGES FOCUS ON HEALTH CARE AND TECH

Changes in higher education are coming this fall as Nebraska colleges and universities introduce new programs heavily focused on health care and technology.

University of Nebraska at Omaha

With the 2022-2023 academic year, University of Nebraska at Omaha initiated new scholarships — in all fields of study for both undergraduates and graduates — for all international students, according to Phil He, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs. All newly admitted first-time and transfer students are automatically considered for these scholarships pending full-time enrollment.

“Much of the growth in international enrollments that we’re seeing so far has been in the STEM fields,” He said.

Renewals are automatic, contingent upon the students remaining in good academic standing and continuous full-time enrollment. The UNO International Academic Excellence Scholarship funds

tuition costs for all admitted undergraduate students starting at approximately $3,000 per year and approximately $2,000 per year for graduate students.

“Higher education has become more of a necessity for people to be able to thrive, take care of their families, and solve the grand problems of the world,” He said. “We’re updating our programs with an eye toward a more individualized future of higher education, going beyond the four-year degree to include more minors and certificates. We are also launching 16 micro-credential programs this summer to provide shorter-form, non-credit offerings that enable learners to quickly develop skills and learn new competencies.”

As part of these new offerings, UNO is launching three stackable executive business certificate programs. Each one can be completed in less than one year, and credits completed in any of the three can later be applied toward a full executive master’s in business administration degree.

UNO is also expanding access to its Jump Start Scholarship to all graduating seniors and recent alumni. This scholarship provides one-time funding to launch a student’s graduate program experience whether they decide to pursue a graduate certificate for a quick resume booster or a full master’s degree program. Eligible students who are admitted to and enrolled in a graduate program must submit an application considered for the Jump Start Scholarship.

Over the past year, UNO has hired 33 new full-time faculty, and this year its colleges revised 52 academic programs, the majority of which are in high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand areas of STEM, health care, education, and business and innovation.

Bellevue University

Bellevue University’s certificate programs each consist of two to five classes that focus on a particular skill set.

“[Certificate programs] are growing in popularity, not only at Bellevue but across the nation, because [students] can grab some workplace-ready skills and put them to use immediately,” said Matt Davis, dean of the College of Engineering, Technology and Management.

Bellevue’s mental health technician certificate program is one of its newest, designed to meet the shortage of qualified medical and mental health professionals.

The University’s people in business leadership certificate program, with an enrollment of several thousand students, has been redesigned and will launch in August.

Its Bachelor of Science/Computer Science degree will also launch this fall.

“About 25% of our total students are in that technical area right now,” Davis said. “They’re targeting a general purpose science degree that has been in demand for some time.”

The popularity of Bellevue’s undergraduate supply chain management program has led to the establishment of a Master of Science in Supply Chain Management to be rolled out late this fall.

“One of our fastest growing programs, clinical and mental health counseling, has about 800 students,” Davis said. “To maintain our accreditation in that, we’re required to have a certain number of faculty so we’re constantly recruiting. In our cybersecurity program, both undergraduate and graduate level are growing fast, so we’re always onboarding new faculty to keep up with the growth.”

Bellevue, which has been online since 1999, is now in the midst of rolling out its third generation of online instruction.

“Many students are demanding to have some sort of live video in those online classes, which Zoom has enabled us to do,” Davis said. “ Also, the online tutoring component and the faculty office hours is now video-enabled. This winter we’re rolling out our fully digital book classes with the books, learning materials and associated videos being online at the beginning of the class.”

Creighton University

The Arizona Department of Health Services awarded $11.9 million to Creighton University’s College of Nursing, according to a Creighton press release.

Of that total, $5.9 million will go toward scholarships for 80 accelerated nursing students and to hire an additional academic counselor, a clinical placement coordinator and a program manager.

The remaining $6 million will be spent on further enhancing Creighton’s Phoenix campus, advancing the University’s plan to create cutting-edge academic spaces to help meet the future health care needs of Arizona.

This fall, Creighton will offer a new online Master of Health Informatics degree that will prepare students to leverage health data to improve care and promote better outcomes for patients.

Also this fall, Creighton will offer new online professional development programs in financial planning and financial psychology. The coursework covers some topics required to sit for the certified financial planner exam and is designed to make participants more familiar with how personal beliefs about money influence our spending, saving and broader economic behaviors.

According to a press release, Scott Shipman, who currently serves as director of clinical innovations for the Association of American Medical Colleges [AAMC] in Washington, D.C., has been named the inaugural holder of the CyncHealth Endowed Chair for Population Health at Creighton University, effective Sept. 1.

Dr. Joy Doll, formerly the vice president of community programs for CyncHealth, will return to Creighton as the program director for health informatics.

LOCAL COLLEGES ADD HEALTH CARE, TECH PROGRAMS

Creighton will open the $85 million CL Werner Center for Health Sciences Education this fall.

The center will enhance the pipeline of health care service providers across Nebraska in a variety of fields using cutting-edge technology and next-generation learning spaces that provide hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that will get Creighton graduates into practice quicker and with more clinic-ready skills.

With the state-of-the-art learning tools in the CL Werner Center, Creighton plans to add 3,800 new professionals by 2040 to join the other 6,500 health practitioners in Nebraska with Creighton degrees.

College of Saint Mary

Over the past six years, College of Saint Mary (CSM) has worked to build a master’s degree in physician assistant studies and doctoral degrees in occupational and physical therapy, according to Dr. Kimberly Allen, vice president of academic and student affairs.

“With each program fully accredited by its respective accreditation bodies, our attention has now shifted to refreshing the undergraduate prehealth pathway programs,” she said. “Our pre-health programs serve as a critical foundation for our graduate health programs education.”

CSM offers several pre-health programs that provide a strong

science foundation and prepare students to excel in the entrance exams for their chosen fields. For example, undergraduates seeking an OTD or DPT degree will select exercise science, psychology or human biology. Early in their academic careers, pre-health students will participate in fieldwork experiences in social service agencies, public schools, hospitals, nursing homes, community outreach centers or mental health treatment centers.

Working across all health-related programs, faculty have made significant changes to increase opportunities to practice care for a diverse patient population. Partnering with Inclusive Communities faculty, students have engaged in work to identify their own biases while learning to confront prejudice and discrimination in health care settings.

“The Division of Arts, Sciences, and Professional Studies has engaged in smaller curricular changes that hopefully provide a bigger impact, such as making courses more inclusive and recognizing the diversity of perspectives in topics in readings, authors [and] course content,” Allen said. “Collectively, the goal is to meet students where they are in their learning journey and provide high-impact learning experiences steeped in women’s perspectives and rich cultural contexts.”

While managing significant programmatic changes, CSM’s core faculty remains strong. There have been no retirements this year, but a few

Metropolitan Community College

Metropolitan Community College (MCC) will add several new programs at the start of the 2023 fall quarter, according to Tom

McDonnell, vice president for academic affairs.

These will include four new certificates in the architectural design technology program all focused on building information modeling [BIM], a basic and an advanced firefighter operations certificate, a facilities operations and maintenance certificate, a powersports and outdoor power technology degree — with specialty certificates in ATV/ snowmobile, marine technician, motorcycle technician and outdoor power equipment technician.

New specialty certificates in information technology include cybersecurity, Cisco advanced networking, cloud/server administration, game developer, IT support, computer programming, and digital technology.

“We’ve had a handful of retirements this year, although no more than usual,” McDonnell said. “We’ve also hired on new faculty to support our new programs, most notably in powersports and in BIM.”

MCC announced the opening of Digital Express, located inside Building 10 on the Fort Omaha Campus in North Omaha. In addition to MCC students, the state-of-the-art facility is open to the public and offers free access to technology, meeting spaces, digital library and learning opportunities.

“Digital Express is a place where multiple generations can feel comfortable connecting, learning and creating,” Director Beverly Lahlum Taylor said in a press release.

A key feature of Digital Express is “Reboot Central powered by iFix Omaha.” The technology service desk offers low-cost technology repair provided by industry experts and MCC students pursuing careers in information technology. No membership fee is required to use Digital Express.

The Future of Trades

SOUTHEAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE SPOTLIGHTS TECHNICAL PROGRAMS

Recent high school graduates are increasingly considering careers in the trades. The training needed for skilled labor jobs is shorter, often more affordable than the traditional college experience, and offers unique on-the-job training opportunities.

Southeast Community College has invested in its trades programs and has found value through its community partnerships.

Steady Enrollment

Dr. Joel Michaelis, vice president of instruction for Southeast Community College, noted 2,400 students had enrolled in the health and sciences program for the 2022-2023 academic year. There are 502 students undergoing training in computer technology, 243 in construction, 277 in electronics, 153 in manufacturing, 583 in transportation, 161 in welding, and 180 in agriculture.

“As for the pandemic, our overall enrollments have stabilized, and the technical programs have even increased,” he shared.

In 2022, the college awarded 1,349 degrees in its trades programs. In the construction, transportation, and electronics and manufacturing programs, respectively, 95 to 100% of graduates were employed in Nebraska.

Partnerships

SCC partners with dozens of companies, facilities, and organizations to provide on-the-job training, apprenticeships and internships so that each student can hone their skills.

For example, the heating, ventilation, air conditioning & refrigeration technology (HVAC/R) program utilizes more than a dozen local companies across Lincoln and Omaha that work alongside the college. The design & drafting technology program partners with organizations like the Nebraska Department of Roads, TMCO, Olsson, and Alvine Engineering. In the energy generation operations program, Nebraska Public Power District, Omaha Public Power District, Grand Island Utilities District, Wahoo Public Utilities, and Nebraska Nitrogen are among the partners listed. Southeast Community College also partners with dozens of medical facilities throughout the region for clinicals and practicums within its health care programs.

SCC also offers education and training to assist businesses, industries, and organizations in the area. Leadership training, certifications, and customized e-learning courses are available. Training can be provided on-site at the business, or at one of the college campus locations.

What’s Up and Coming

“I’m excited about a new division we’ve created within the college called the Office of Work-based Learning,” he said. “With this, we are developing and implementing new ways to provide instruction to even more students in technical areas through the use of credit for prior learning, competency-based education, and apprenticeships. In fact, we just recently received approval from the Department of Labor to offer welding through apprenticeships.”

Coming in October is the college’s annual Manufacturing Day, which showcases manufacturing careers for potential students. There are also events that continue through the month that will introduce students to manufacturers that are looking to fill high-skill and hightech jobs.

SCC will continue to live out its mission to provide students with the valuable skills they need to begin a stable career that aligns with their interests and passions.

“These are the workers that produce the products and services that drive our overall economy, and it’s important to us at SCC that we do everything we can to meet that need,” Michaelis said.

April Showers Bring Financial Literacy?

Two things recently caught my eye about finances and financial literacy. A recent article in Yahoo Finance recently caught my eye. The headline read “1 in 3 Gen Z and Millennial Adults Are Still Financially Reliant on Their Parents, Study Finds.” For as large a part of the workforce as this population comprises, a lot of workers struggle with finances. The second was a proposal written by a student to provide financial literacy education to high school, college, and university students.

April also brings urgency to finish filing taxes and checking financial status through this process. Some people better understand what it means to be financially literate and reach financial goals, while others struggle to become financially independent. In Omaha, we are very fortunate to have several programs and resources to teach financial literacy, starting at a young age and moving through any stage of adulthood. Here is a sampling of some of them; there are more than this article has space to mention:

Public K-12 School Systems:

Nebraska has been leading the way in financial literacy for K-12 for a while now. LB452 is a bill passed by the Nebraska Legislature requiring financial literacy standards and instruction in K-12 public school districts. After the bill was passed, several stories were written to show how LB452 was implemented across the state.

Higher Education:

Many colleges and universities use Inceptia for financial literacy education. Inceptia started by providing education primarily about student loans, but they have expanded to some other student levels. They are based in Lincoln, but their programs are online.

Although not specifically for college and university

COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS

Several community organizations also provide financial literacy education, especially for youth. For example, organizations like Junior Achievement of the Midlands and Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands offer financial literacy programs for teens. Financial Beginnings is a national organization that provides financial literacy education to youth through a large network of volunteers, and they have a Nebraska group. LendingLink “provides responsive financial coaching coupled with affordable, alternative loans.”

students, The UNO Center for Economic Education is based out of the UNO campus and provides economic education for K-12 students. It is one of five centers overseen by the Nebraska Council of Economic Education, which operates out of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. The UNO center is accredited by the national Council for Economic Education.

Financial Institution Programs:

Several financial institutions offer free financial literacy programs to the community. The Nebraska Bankers Association provides statewide financial literacy education to youth. Centris Federal Credit Union has also provided financial literacy education to the community for several years. Centris’ partnerships with the Financial Hope Collaborative at Creighton University teach single moms and young adults financial literacy skills, while programs like Mad City Money

There are many more financial literacy programs to mention than space in this article. What is heartening to the Business Ethics Alliance is to see so that most of the organizations listed above which provide these programs are also Trustee Partners of the Alliance. Additionally, other programs (and some individuals from) these organizations listed provide service to the Alliance

Dan Pauley and Tyler Seals

PAULEY, SEALS CHOSEN AS NEBRASKA ENTREPRENEURSHIP FELLOWS

Dan Pauley and Tyler Seals, partners in the law firm Smith Pauley LLP, have been chosen as Nebraska Entrepreneurship Fellows, an invitation-only program through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Entrepreneurship that taps into the state’s top business leaders to help mold the next generation of entrepreneurs. Pauley and Seals will serve as fellows for the 2023-24 academic year.

Pauley called it “humbling” to be chosen for such an important role in mentoring Nebraska’s young entrepreneurs.

“I’ve certainly had plenty of mentors who have helped me during my career journey, going all the way back to my younger years with the family lumber business in Hastings, up to last year when we launched Smith Pauley,” Pauley said. “I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned along the way – and learning from the students, professors and other fellows in this program.”

Seals thanked the Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship for the opportunity to work with students and help develop the skills and resources they need to establish and grow their own businesses.

“I know firsthand the exciting challenges that entrepreneurs face when launching their own ventures, both through the clients I represent and through my experience with being on the ground floor of forming Smith Pauley,” Seals said. “I can’t wait to be part of this program and partner with students and professors.”

Pauley and Seals understand the importance of thinking outside the traditional ways of doing business.
