More than 3,000 leaders will come together on May 15 for the 31st Annual Women’s Leadership Conference held by the Institute for Career Advancement Needs (ICAN).
This year’s theme “Elevate the Collective Power of Women” will lean into women’s economic impact and collective influence for powerful change and development when leading together.
ICAN’s event will feature world-class speakers, networking, and development opportunities that attendees expect, but will also include some new experiences. An expanded audience is also on the horizon, with ICAN President and CEO Aileen Warren referencing the power of virtual capabilities – more attendees from across the globe leaning into its hybrid format.
Last year, Warren said ICAN hosted 3,200-plus leaders, representing 464 companies, 43 U.S. states and five countries.
“We expect that to continue to grow this year,” she said.
The theme will explore the connections women make.
“To me, the ‘collective power of women’ means women understanding and using their collective power to come together, united towards a common goal resulting in powerful and impactful change,” she said.
The leadership development organization is bringing back two tremendously successful opportunities from last year. First, Honor a Leader, which provides anyone in the community the chance to honor impactful leaders in their lives with a donation to ICAN. Second, the Small Business Squad, which features small businesses in time for Small Business Month.
When asked about the unique flavor of the event in 2024, Warren characterized a robust discussion on women discovering their economic worth and financial capability as a cornerstone of this year’s conference.
“In addition to presentations on the main stage and the sharing of facts and resources in this arena, there will be an opportunity for our attendees to explore this in our exhibitor area via a collection of booths in our ‘financial marketplace’ to engage women around taking control of their finances and understanding their capabilities,” she said.
Rounding out fresh additions is its focus on women’s employee resource groups from organizations throughout the community that make an impact both on the women they serve — through networking, service and development aspects — and throughout their organization, industry, and community.
Lisa Kaplan, who oversees conference development, gave a glimpse into how the conference theme was developed.
“Each year our research seems to organically grow from the previous year’s theme, and this year was no exception,” she explained. “While conducting a broad reflection of the past 30 years of conferences in 2023, we focused on the bold conversations in the world impacting women.”
Kaplan noted how the biggest conversation kept coming back to the consumer and the financial place women have in society.
“One cannot help but think about the power and influence women can wield if we were to unite and bring attention to the issues that matter to us as women leaders,” she said. “In fact, ICAN sees it as more of an anthem than a theme.”
Allison Zach, ICAN director of marketing, communications and events, indicated the organization is building on this rallying cry by creating engagement opportunities that enable participants to be a part of something unique collectively.
“There are a few entertaining surprises in store, along with the opportunity to really learn, gain motivation, and connect with fellow attendees through conversation tables, the exhibitor area, the annual ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference notebook, and some fun activations throughout the space,” she noted.
Previously available for purchase, the ICAN Continuing the Conversation Toolkit is now included as part of the conference registration value and will be delivered to all attendees afterward.
“We hope this toolkit will both encourage and instill easier activation for attendees to hold post-conference discussions on what they learned, implement their learnings together in their organization, put ideas into action and build on the connections made at the conference – not to mention extend the learnings throughout their company and networks to build on our collective power theme,” Zach stated.
Additionally, she highlighted how ICAN is partnering with both Saving Grace Perishable Food Rescue and Access Period as a “collective act of good” for its audience and event impact.
ICAN is also taking an expanded view, as it grows its virtual audience to more companies and cities across the country.

“For both our in-person and virtual audience, attendees will have access to the conference presentation recordings (both main stage keynotes and all breakout sessions) for 45 days after the conference,” Zach said.
She encouraged those who can’t be a part of the conference this year to look into its year-round programs, from ICAN’s Defining Leadership Program — 1,300-plus graduates strong, kicking off in September for women and February for men — to an array of custom leadership development workshops, offered both in-person and virtually. Watch for ICAN’s new Learning Burst four-part virtual series to be announced in May.
This year’s conference will feature a fresh lineup of speakers, continuing its tradition of world-class keynotes.
Holly Ransom, CEO and founder of Emergent Global, joins luminaries such as CNN journalist Brooke Baldwin and “Alpha Girls” author Julian Guthrie as keynote presenters. Her afternoon keynote will focus on “Leadership Development for the Collective.”
In the lead-up to the conference, Ransom spoke to the challenges faced by women as they become more vocal about their economic value to society.
“The biggest challenges include the disproportionate burden of unpaid work, limited access to finance, gender biases and harmful social norms,” she said. “Women globally shoulder a significant amount of unpaid work, with estimates ranging from 10 to 60% of GDP — highlighting its clear importance to society — but, due to a range of factors, including gender norms and cultural expectations, this work is often ‘invisible’ or significantly undervalued.”
Ransom said women are less likely to have access to the finances necessary to start and scale businesses.
“In the developing world, this amounts to upwards of a $260 billion unmet financial need, while in countries like the U.S., only approximately 2.7% of VC (venture capital) money goes to women-led enterprises,” she said. “It makes it very difficult to prove your economic case when the access to the very resources you need to scale and

flourish are beyond the reach of so many women.”
Guthrie, founder of Alphy and the Alpha Girls Institute, will focus on women underdogs with her keynote “Alpha Girls — Women Upstarts.” She will pull from her experience writing about the Silicon Valley women who succeeded in the maledominated world of venture capital.
“Writing ‘Alpha Girls’ opened my eyes to the disparities that exist in the world of venture capital and technology, specifically around the lack of support and funding for companies started by women,” she said. “Early on in my reporting, I came across alarming and eye-opening statistics: 94% of check-writing venture capitalists are men, and only 2% of venture dollars go to companies founded by women.
“I began to ask: what does it mean when the next generation of companies are funded and supported by men only, impacting the cars we drive, the technologies we use, and the way we travel, live, work, and interact.”
Zach advised the conference attendees to concentrate both on personal and professional leadership development and expand their focus to include their broader community and network.
“Visit the booths, check out a breakout session, chat with someone new, check out the bookstore and get a book signed by one of our speakers,” she said. “Be present to take in the energy and insights of the day, and keep the momentum from the conference going in your life, your career, and your business.”
Warren said women can create momentum and raise the standard of leadership to another level.
“We want our attendees to be inspired to find opportunities to activate ‘collectives’ within their own life or organization and use the power of leading and working together to elevate their potential and impact,” she said.

A staple of the ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference is undoubtedly its breakout sessions. This year’s speakers aim to provide valuable insights to inspire ICAN attendees to make a difference in their personal and professional lives.
Three speakers provided a preview of their session.
With over 20 years of experience coaching, training and consulting businesses, this presentation is delivered by internationally recognized speaker and best-selling author, AmyK Hutchens. A major audience favorite from her 2023 keynote, ICAN is bringing her back to deliver a more in-depth breakout session experience. She will ask attendees “What if you had the confidence and courage to share your ideas, speak with conviction and honor the worth of your own voice?”
Hutchens will share her “magical phrases” and communication techniques aimed at closing deals, saving marriages, advancing careers, healing family dynamics, and aligning women with their “best lives.” She’ll also offer strategies to reduce anxiety before a tough conversation.
“This is not a session on communication theory. It’s a highly practical, easily implementable session on the power of words, and how a single word or series of words can elevate your individual power, and our collective power, one powerful conversation at a time,” Hutchens said. “Our collective power rises when each of our individual power rises, and our individual power rises when we use our voice.”
Julie Brown, speaker, author and business strategist, will present a breakout session on navigating networking. By developing this skill, women can build a professional network to share experiences, insights and opportunities such as mentorship.
“Networking is practically my spirit animal, and I’m thrilled to unleash the mighty power of networking upon the fabulous women of Omaha,” Brown said. “It’s time to turn those connections into confetti and celebrate the magic of networking together. Networking plays a pivotal role in elevating the collective power of women by fostering connections, collaboration, and empowerment. My revolutionary networking method smashes through barriers, paving the way for transformative relationships that redefine careers and lives.”

Presenter Jo Miller, a thought leader on women’s leadership, is chief executive officer of Be Leaderly. She has dedicated over 20 years to helping women advance into influential positions by leveraging their leadership strengths. Miller will discuss the difference between mentors and sponsors, and how to break down barriers to a career breakthrough. The session will talk about how to make the most of each meeting with a mentor, detail how sponsorship works, and offer a step-by-step approach to attracting a sponsor’s advocacy. The session will also discuss ways to elevate others by being an effective sponsor.
“This matters because most of us underestimate the difference sponsorship can make, and yet high potential women are over-mentored and under-sponsored relative to male peers,” Miller said. “This is a significant reason why women don’t advance as rapidly. With this year’s ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference centering around the collective economic power of women, the Institute for Career Advancement Needs and its partners are taking action toward this goal.
Opportunities have been built into the event to unlock the true value and wealth presented by women.
Tasked with conference development, ICAN’s Lisa Kaplan put a spotlight on the undeniable statistics. How women control more than 80% of the consumer and health care spending, present the majority of the voting-age population and workforce representation, steer 90% of all bank accounts and, by 2030, will control $30-plus trillion in assets.
“We are the fastest growing group of military veterans and, yet, women still shoulder the majority of child and elder care duties, while earning 83 cents to the male-earned dollar,” Kaplan said. “Women still represent less than 25% of the C-Suite and are only 10% of [Fortune 500] CEOs.”
Men still run most health care and tech organizations, she continued, as well as the majority of profit and loss leadership positions as a whole.
“This is the ultimate paradox of women today that we wish to highlight,” Kaplan said. “Now is the time to unite our voices — and take advantage of our economic power — to increase gender equity, and to make a difference in all decisions that impact society for the better.”
Similarly, the theme “Elevate the Collective Power of Women” informed the selection of the voices featured as speakers and presenters at this year’s conference.
“Each speaker will highlight the greater impact women can have when we come together with purpose,” Kaplan explained. “Starting with journalist Brooke Baldwin, whose own book focused on the ability of women to provide support, empowerment, inspiration and strength to solve problems or enact meaningful change.”
That book, “Huddle,” reportedly involved Baldwin embedding herself into groups of women across ages, races, religions and socio-economic backgrounds who are unified in banding together to support, empower, inspire, and enact meaningful change.
“UNO Chancellor [Joanne] Li has the economic and financial expertise to explain this paradox for women today and share with us the important role that women have in the health of our economy,” Kaplan said of a locally-based keynote.
Li, whose economic acumen includes designation as a Chartered Financial Analyst and member of the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank Omaha Branch Board of Directors, is slated to explore “The New Face of Money.”
“In the context of developing leaders and professionals for our future economy, we must actively engage with each other in the community, promote the growth of opportunity
for other women, and demonstrate the willingness and courage to take center stage in decision-making. Go to places together and don’t be shy about using our network,” Li said.
When looking at the balance of afternoon keynotes, Kaplan characterized Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha as the “amazing hero of the Flint, Michigan water scandal.” The pediatrician, scientist, activist, author and Associate Dean for Public Health at Michigan State University is poised to address attendees in a fireside chat titled “What the Eyes Don’t See.”
“[Hanna-Attisha] will tell her story of how she galvanized a team of researchers, parents, friends and community leaders to make dramatic change to the water treatment and delivery systems in her state, and is continuing to have a lasting impact on the health of young people,” she stated. “We will also get an update from CEO of Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska, Sarah Waldman, on how it has evolved into a progressive training ground for our girls by providing tools, resources and opportunities needed for Nebraska’s next generation of women leaders, while teaching girls their collective power.”
The day will culminate with tech expert and AnitaB.org CEO, Brenda Darden Wilkerson, who will share a message about the importance of diversity among software and product developers whose creations heavily impact society. Darden Wilkerson will address gender bias on technology during her keynote.
“Remember, gender equality is not just a women’s issue, it’s a human issue, and we all have a part to play in making it a reality,” she said. “Women must recognize that we all have power, regardless of title and position, to advocate for policies and practices that support gender equality.
“We must be vigilant and proactive in challenging gender biases and stereotypes whenever we encounter them. When women uplift each other, they create a powerful ripple effect that challenges the status quo and promotes gender equality.”
Addressing equality in pay, the conference will also feature financial literacy and empowerment opportunities.
“Nationwide, women are often underserved by the banking and wealth management community,” she said. “We want to highlight Nebraska’s banking and investment community experts in the Exhibit Hall’s ‘Financial Marketplace’ to engage our audience around their financial capability and opportunity.”
Kaplan said attendees will have the chance to be inspired to participate in decisionmaking within their respective organizations and elevate the issues that impact the health and diversity of the community.

In an era as divisive as the present day is, it’s important to remember how support and advocacy of co-workers can lead to better business outcomes.
A special session being held in conjunction with the 2024 ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference will feature a panel discussion, available to both men and women, that will examine the concept and discuss how companies can leverage it to create a more inclusive work environment and how the companies that do this effort well perform better.
“The concept may be new to some people; however, it has been practiced for decades,” said Marsha Graesser, director, talent development and culture for WoodmenLife and chair of the ICAN board of directors, who will kick-off the session. “Male allyship is men recognizing their influence and using it for the good of others and the overall organization. It’s simply doing the right thing. It is being brave and having tough conversations on behalf of others. It’s also recognizing your biases and practicing a growth mindset.”
Graesser said the panel will not only illustrate what male allyship is but also give practical tips that can be applied immediately in the workplace.
“Allyship, in general, takes work,” she said. “To leverage male allyship in the workplace, you must take a chance, be vulnerable and pay it forward. To be a great ally, you must be an advocate when no one is looking, make time and be willing to outsmart your biases.
“At WoodmenLife, we strive to be a place where everyone can do their best work. This means leaning in, paying attention to details, making room for others and practicing the value of inclusion. When others see allyship in action, they won’t say it, they will do it. It is contagious, to say the least.”
Across the business landscape, companies are looking for ways to boost inclusion and root out sexual bias wherever it exists. Male allyship seeks to increase situational awareness, identify outmoded schools of thought and action and empower male employees to advocate for, support and respect their female counterparts, be they peers or subordinates.
“Although most men notionally support more gender inclusion and equity, there is clear research that men often are challenged at recognizing gender discrimination and harassment in real time,” wrote W. Brad Johnson of Harvard Business Review. “For instance, despite the recent focus on workplace sexual harassment and assault, a 2018 study revealed that 77% of men didn’t see harassment as a problem, even as 38% of their female colleagues reported experiencing workplace harassment.
“Lack of awareness can keep even well-intentioned men on the sidelines, rather than serving as effective advocates and accomplices for change,” Johnson wrote.
John Slieter, ICAN faculty member and moderator of the session panel, said while strides have been made overall, there’s still work to be done.
“More men want to be allies to women in the workplace than ever before, with 76% of men expressing an interest in allyship,” he said. “At the same time, being an ally is not easy. It takes male leaders at the highest levels demonstrating ways of encouraging male colleagues to step up, develop allyship skills, and support women with strength of conviction, pursuing gender inclusion and equality as corporate values.”
The concept of male allyship has been part of the ICAN dialogue for the past few years, said Julie Burrell Lillig, the organization’s vice president of strategic partnerships, and those discussions have only become more layered as high-profile examples of male allyship continue to present themselves in society.
“Male allyship is about paying attention and unlocking doors for everyone,” she said. “If you want to be a good ally, then proactively include women, find ways to educate yourself and your team, ask how you can help and then listen and lead by example.
“A recent example, when Ryan Gosling spoke out on behalf of [director] Greta Gerwig and [actress] Margot Robbie during the awards season for the Barbie movie, it demonstrated that male allyship is about being more than a passive observer at work. Bottom line, we need more good men to be active advocates for women and for policies that move from awareness to advocacy.”
ICAN is committed to using its conference as an annual forum to discuss the most important issues related to developing and advancing women. The 2024 special session, attended separately from the rest of the ICAN conference, will feature a panel of Joanne Sebby, Fiserv chief risk officer; Javier Fernandez, OPPD president and CEO; and Rick Putnam, partner, Baird Holm followed by facilitated circle conversations for participants to further connect, reflect on their learnings, and share best practices and ideas.
“One of my favorite quotes is from [gender strategist] Jeffery Tobias Halter,” Burell Lillig said. “He said, ‘If men are 50% of the problem, then we’re also 50% of the solution.’ This year, we’re highlighting some prominent allies in the business community who will share their experiences and best practices [on male allyship]at the special session. It will be an exciting opportunity for attendees to the session as they get to experience part of the day and get acknowledged for how important they are in standing up for the progress of women in the workplace.”

In corporate America, HR departments have traditionally managed the employee life cycle. However, with the advent of new technology such as artificial intelligence, HR has become much more tech-focused.
As applaudhr.com reported, 2023 was supposed to be the year of putting the human back into human resources, ensuring technology became more employee-centric, and reestablishing connections among workers, even in hybrid work groups. The site predicted more attention would be paid to skills gap training, burnout, stress issues and leadership development than had been given since before the pandemic cast much of the business world into survival mode.
Instead, say local experts, HR professionals in the Midlands have accumulated an unprecedented number of technology tools in the name of covering more ground.
“With advances in technology and a continuous barrage of software options, HR tasks continue to become more automated,” said
Merle Riepe, president of SOLVE. “Payroll, benefits management and performance evaluations have been managed and executed utilizing software for some time and those offerings continue to advance.
“Recruitment and selection have seen the greatest advancements over the past decade and a lot of companies are marketing ‘silver bullets’ to solve the current struggles in those domains.”
As TechTarget.com noted, these advancements have also brought stiff challenges to the typical HR department, as it relates to technology. HR professionals are seeing vast amounts of employee data, the incompatibility of different systems, and the increasing use of artificial intelligence.

A key area of HR operations where the pros and cons of technology reside side-by-side is in hiring. New tools are designed to help HR professionals manage a wider net of prospective candidates and make better decisions for future success.

However, the marketplace is also clogged with programs that only serve to frustrate the overall process, Riepe said.
“Technology has empowered prospective hires with more information, not always accurate, and power in the hiring process,” Riepe said. “Candidates can access Glassdoor and ascertain a company’s culture. For larger organizations, there is often detail about the recruitment process, including the tools used and the interview questions that are typically asked. Resourceful candidates can research how to game popular hiring assessments to get a favorable outcome since some of the tools lack sophistication in instrument development and scoring.”
Moreover, each new phase of technology brings its own unique challenges from an employee use standpoint. The risk of security breaches is a decades-old problem that has only been made more challenging by remote work, employees’ ability to use their own equipment and the rise of the smartphone to access sensitive information.

“Data security is more important now than ever,” said Kelli Lieurance, partner with Baird Holm LLP. “Companies need robust policies and procedures, often drafted by IT, to protect nearly all aspects of the business. Many companies now train employees at least annually on how to spot phishing scams and protect trade secrets, proprietary information and personally identifiable information. This has become just as common as annual harassment training.”
Lieurance said some familiar technologies, such as social media, have evolved to present new challenges.
“Generally, an employer may discipline an employee for their off-duty conduct [on social media] if it starts to affect work,” she said. “However,
there are laws which limit that ability. For non-public entities, the National Labor Relations Act provides non-supervisory employees the right to discuss the terms and conditions of their employment with other employees for their own mutual aid and protection.
“This means that if an employee posts something critical of a manager, for example, and other employees comment or ‘like’ it, the employer may be limited in disciplining that employee because it relates to the terms and conditions of their employment.”
Other technologies, such as AI, present a completely new set of risks and challenges to which HR professionals have had to adjust quickly.
“The use of AI, while intended to simplify processes, may simultaneously add more complexity and for this reason, it will still require HR oversight to ensure legal compliance,” Lieurance said. “Businesses need to determine whether they will use AI or other technology to provide better products or services. This requires policies and training, which often fall under HR’s responsibilities.”
Lieurance gave the example of a lawyer who used AI to draft a legal brief but didn’t check the legitimacy of the cases in the brief, and some of them turned out to be fabricated.

Bryn Reed, director of human resources for Live On Nebraska, said her organization has tackled the issues of the modern workplace through a cooperative effort between the HR department and the information technology team, to help ensure employees understand the requirements of their roles and the ramifications of their actions. This is particularly true as it pertains to security.
“Our way to address the ever-changing environment is through collaboration and education,” she said. “Our IT department is exceptional, constantly innovating to ensure the security of our network and communication channels. We frequently offer training on the use of our technology, guiding through education and encouraging a positive approach to leverage these tools in support of their work.”
Reed said despite the challenges, the fundamentals of oversight and management of personnel still apply, even while addressing different challenges in a new age.
“The advancement of technology in the workplace underscores the need for HR and leadership to ensure that employees genuinely grasp the information they acquire through technological means,” she said. “We are tasked with scrutinizing the information and offering direction when there is a lack of complete understanding.”

To pay the cost of said improvement the Board of Trustees shall have the power to issue negotiable bonds of the District after such improvements have been completed and accepted; said bonds to be called “Sanitary and Improvement District Bonds” and shall be payable and bear interest as provided by the Statutes of the State of Nebraska.
The Board of Trustees shall assess to the extent of special benefits, the cost of such improvements upon properties specially benefited thereby. All special assessments which may be levied upon the properties specially benefited by such improvements shall, when collected, be set aside and constitute a sinking fund for the payment of interest and principal of said bonds. The District shall also cause to be levied annually a tax upon the assessed value of all of the taxable property in the District except intangible property, which together with said sinking fund derived from special assessments shall be sufficient to meet payment of the interest and principal of said bonds as the same become due; said tax shall be known as the Sanitary and Improvement District Tax and shall be payable annually in money.
If a petition opposing this Resolution, signed by property owners representing a majority of the front footage which may become subject to assessment for the cost of the improvements as set forth herein, is filed with the Clerk of the District within three (3) days before the date of the hearing on this Resolution, this Resolution shall not be passed.
